06/13/2003:
"FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, you won’t believe it – I could barely believe it myself and yet it was true: The singing bird missed a show last night, and I actually got over eight hours of glorious sleep. I feel ever so much better this morning and I do hope that the bird’s internal clock is now working correctly and it will sing all the livelong day rather than the livelong night.

Has anyone noticed that it is Friday, the Thirteenth. Be very careful today, for things can be unpredictable on Friday the Thirteenth. And for heaven’s sake do not walk in front of any black cats or the black cat will have nothing but bad luck. And don’t hang around any people named Jason who happen to be wearing hockey masks.

Given the extreme length of yesterday’s notes, I shall keep today’s notes brief and succinct, not necessarily in that order. I can’t even report on a DVD because last night was one of those nights when I just couldn’t settle down and watch one – I’d started to watch Fritz Lang’s Cloak and Dagger, but I was distracted and I do not like to watch films when I am distracted. Besides, watching Once Upon a Time in America is like watching three movies and I needed a break. I love Once Upon a Time in America – I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea or even everyone’s cup of hot chocolate, but there are images in that film (courtesy of Mr. Sergio Leone and his cameraman, Mr. Tonino Delli Colli) that are as beautiful as any I’ve ever seen. It also features a great debut performance from the then thirteen-year-old Jennifer Connelly.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because today’s notes are going to be short, don’t you know.

I keep forgetting to mention that if you’ve finished Kritzerland and enjoyed it, please post a review to amazon.com and any other Internet site you feel would be appropriate. It is very helpful to have those – we’ve already got four for Kritzerland up at amazon.

Don’t forget our Unseemly Live Chat will happen on Sunday at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time and we want as many of you there as possible. Be there or be round. And Donald, of course, will have a brand spanking new radio show up for your mental delectation.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must travel the highways and bighways of Los Angeles, California, I must do errands, make phone calls, write, as well as eating various and sundried foodstuffs. I know these here notes have been brief and lacking in their usual something-or-other, but tomorrow we shall have pithy and effervescent notes, so do come by and don’t be a stranger on the weekend. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start: DVD, coming up will be Giant, Chisum, and The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, not necessarily in that order. CD, I’ve been going through a lot of songs that will be featured in Kritzer 3. Your turn. Post away, my pretties, and I will be checking in often.

- Bruce Kimmel

Happy Friday the 13th!

-I didn't really realize it was Friday the 13th until I heard "triscadecaphobia" - or however it is spelled - on NPR this morning.

DVD: Lots of standby

VHS: Hmmm... Been a while...

CD: I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change OCR - I start rehearsals for this on Tuesday. -Now if I could just get the piano score to practice and learn it... Ah, the joys of licensing houses!
-And then a bunch of samplers that were handed out the Capital Pride Festival last Sunday. Eclectic truly applies here - everything from dance mixes, movie themes, classic rock, 70's schmaltz, etc. I mean where else can you get a cut from Annie Lenox's new album and Dolly Parton's "Here You Come Again" AND Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic" on the same CD?!?!?

Car CD player: Shakespeare on Broadway

No TV, hence no VCR or DVD

Posted by Laura @ 06/13/2003 09:49 AM PST

I'm taking a well-earned day off today. How very odd to be home on a Friday!

In my CD player the past couple of days are the Guy Haines album, Merrily We Roll Along (OBC), and the three BK-produced Sondheim albums (I'm sure if he produced more than three I'll learn about it soon). I've been REALLY getting into "Unsung Sondheim."

Still in my DVD player is the Sondheim Celebration at Carnegie Hall (I've been comparing versions of "Not A Day Goes By" -- Christiane Noll does a wonderful job with it, as does Bernadette Peters. But I find it refreshing that the song was introduced in the play by a male singer and wonder why more men haven't sung this song in recordings).

On deck to be placed into my CD player is a CD of Gale Storm songs that arrived in the mail yesterday. I am so completely "down under" with gratitude for it, I cannot thank the sender enough.

Miss Vickie sends greetings to Magnus and Fosca...and to François all the way over there in Paree/Parigi/Paris!

And speaking of "Wicked", only by way of a "Paris" reference, mind you, who can forget the wonderful song "They Haven't Got the Girls in the USA (That they Have in Paris, France)" sung by "Wicked's" "Wizard" himself, Robert "Bobby" Morse and his Adora-Belles???!!!

"Ooh! La-La!" as U.S. movies would have us believe all Frenchmen say when absolutely stunned!

C'est ça, François?

Sleep glorious sleep - soon I will get some sleep once SOUTH PACIFIC closes on Saturday! No more waiting at the theatre to lock up after all the talkers and hangers on and slackers who have nothing to do all the next day stand around and complain about having nothing to do the next day...while I have to get up at 5 a.m.!!!!!

In my DVD player - THE BLUE MAX. Interesting and a nicer music score than I remembered courtesy Mr Jerry Goldsmith, I think.

In my VHS - TWIST ALL NIGHT with Miss June Wilkinson who is quite the twister. She can twist better than she can act. But then again the movie isn't title ACT ALL NIGHT!! so she seems qualified to star in it.

In my CD player the new CANDIDE CD.

Mr BK don't forget to watch for the luscious Miss Allison Hayes as she attends the Hollywood premiere of GIANT with Mr C.V. Whitney president of Winchester Pictures. She looks beautiful, but I still can't understand how she sat for over three hours on all those bugle beads attached to her dress. OUCH!! The interviews with Miss Carroll Baker and Miss Jane Withers are very enjoyable!

Ron Ron Ron - is that Gale Storm Dark Moon or is it another Gale Storm Cd? I would love to have a copy of her singing the wistful 'Faraway Places' but cannot find it anywhere.

And I keep wondering why the Lieber-Stoller revue didn't include that great, great song "Lucky Lips"?

Posted by Jrand52 @ 06/13/2003 09:53 AM PST

Glad the birdie went bye-bye, BK!

CDs--the last thing I listened to was a CD my friend burned for me of random Broadway songs, mostly Sondheim :)

DVD--I haven't really seen any movies lately. The last I saw was Finding Nemo which was adorable.

Off to work! (Snow-White reference?)

Is Jason wearing a hockey mask in TITANIC or SCARLET PIMPERNEL, the two shows he is doing in stock?

Did anyone read of the production of ANNIE in Rhode Island which tacked on a scene at the end with Annie back in the orphanage having dreamed the whole show? Martin Charnin has made them remove it. Children were leaving the theatre in tears and parents were very upset.

CD - Australian cast of BOY FROM OZ, the woman (I can't remember her name) who starred in the original French IRMA LA DOUCE in a solo album, the NY workshop of MOBY DICK - all courtsey of other DRs.

DVD - Back to watching some of the Goofy cartoons on the Disney Treasures that I had never finished

VHS - A broadcast from 1982: "Texaco Opening Night" with Broadway songs from Bernadette (doing "Broadway Baby" and showing with the right material she is great), Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr., Loretta Switt, the then-current casts of ANNIE and A CHORUS LINE and many more.

Cassette - Taking a break from "The Big Show" with a bunch of Baby Snooks skits heard as part of a variety show before she had her own sitcom. It's hard to believe that this is the same Fanny Brice that sang "My Man".

Well well well (that is 3 wells). I don't have anything in my CD player at the moment. I am actually listening to XM Satellite radio as of late... In my DVD player is The Recruit.

I hope Bruce doesn't mind me posting about this - but soon (very soon) an unseemly interview with our very own BK will be posted on the net. You read it here first - the gloves come off and Bruce switches from interviewer to THE HOT HOT HOT seat.

More to follow...

Work CD: Just finished the 1997 Candide and I'm now listening to OBC Ain't Misbehavin'

Home CD: Darling of the Day, just got it and will listen tonight as I fold laundry. Also Listen to the Banned, a compilation of early 20s and 30s risque songs, and Flappers, Vamps and Sweet Young Things, another compilation w/performances from the 20s and 30s by singers most people never heard of (at least people in the general population).

VCR: The Blue Kimona, a silent taped from TCM a few weeks ago. We're finally getting around to watching it.

CD Car - A CD I made for a student for him to listen on the way to England, it's a surprise to him

CD Computer - Sarah Brightman "Surrender"

CD Player by bed - "The Secret Garden" London Cast - it's SOOOOO good

VHS - later today, to top off my "tell Me on a Sunday/Song and Dnace" phase I've been going through, I'm going to watch the TV version of S/D with Sarah B

Speaking of Sarah B - her new CD "Harem" is EXCELLENT. Check it out, you'll be surprised.

Thank God it’s Friday! I don’t care if it’s Friday the 13th or Friday the 666th, it is Friday and that is all I care about.

One quick question regarding a late post last evening. Last night, Jrand mentioned something about Jean Hagen dubbing Debbie Reynolds dubbing Jean Hagen. It was apparently discussed in earlier posts before my time. Can someone enlighten me?

Bad week for CDs, DVDs, and VCRs at my house. So happy that I didn’t have rehearsals this week that I spent all of my down-time watching the Seattle Mariners on TV or napping in my chair. I do have Streisand playing in the car CD player, but nothing else in any of the machines.

Dull, but true.

In my CD player: the London cast recording of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." After that, "Sugar Babies" with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller... our very own BK was "Executive Producer" of the "Varèse Sarabande CD Release Staff." I got "Sugar Babies" on eBay.

In my DVD player: "Graham Norton Live" (Region 2 Pal). Last night I watched "French and Saunders Live" (also Region 2 Pal). I got both of these from eBay, also.

In my VCR: "Twice Upon a Time" to be watched sometime this weekend. Another eBay purchase.

In my computer hard drive at home getting ready to be burned onto a CD: the very awkwardly titled "Simultaneous Songs and Counterpoint, Disc 12." In other words, my 12th compilation disc filled with selections where two or more songs are written or arranged to be sung at the same time, back and forth or with just a lot of noise happening at once. I love this kind of stuff! What's the word: Quodlibet!

All right, these fashion checks are quite popular - so, what is everyone wearing? If anyone does a google search on "what are you wearing" we might get some interesting visitors.

I, for example, am wearing my Nike shorts and a t-shirt, sweat socks and tennis shoes.

Posted by bk @ 06/13/2003 12:32 PM PST

I'm wearing my Asics brand running shoes (although I never run), white Skechers (sp?) ankle socks, Hanes tighty-whities, Wrangler blue jeans, my brand-spanking new American Cancer Society 2003 Relay For Life team t-shirt (just got it today).

I am wearing jeans, a polo shirt and docksiders.

Bruce and I have just finished our unseemly interview (which actually will be posted on another site). Bruce held nothing back and I really think everyone is going to enjoy his answers....

Posted by Craig @ 06/13/2003 12:46 PM PST

To answer an above post... MGM did not think Debbie Reynolds could sing when she made SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, so for the scenes where her character Kathy Selden is dubbing the voice of Lina Lamont (a shining star in the cinema firmament played by Jean Hagen), it is actually Jean Hagen singing for Debbie whose character is singing for Jean's character. Get it? Got it? Good! (Oh - A Court Jester reference).

William-

Correction. Betty sang, but Jean SPOKE for Debbie speaking for Jean

Posted by Craig @ 06/13/2003 01:00 PM PST

Well you learn something everyday...I thought that Noyes sang for Debbie AS Debbie but that Hagen also dubbed her own singing as Kathy/Debbie singing for Hagen...turns out I was wrong. So TCB - there you are.

Thanks,Ron. That's a great CD, but no 'Faraway Places' that Gale sang once on her tv show - and also I think when she was visited by Charles Collingwood on a Person to Person show.

AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

-Thank you, just had to vent - much better now :-D

Clothes check: Green pocket-tee, blue walking shorts, white sock, cross-trainers. -Oh, and gray boxer-briefs today.

-Mmmm.. Maybe we should leave our unmentionables unmentioned... or at least at-your-discretionables.

Susan - I send all the hope and good vibes to your daughter's friend. And if I thought cake and cookies would help, I'd send those too!

Posted by Jose C. Simbulan @ 06/13/2003 02:56 PM PST

DR Matthew: You're not the only one with that thought crossing their mind. If anything, Bernadette Peters - and her doctor(s) - are under considerable pressure to make sure she stay healthy for the remainder of her contract. But after that.. ????? -I'm all for having her play a six or seven show week if that will insure the continuity of the show.

However, I'm sure Gypsy is on #2 or #3 of most people's lists of shows to see this summer - behind Hairspray and/or Movin' Out. I haven't checked the grosses or heard about the weekly tallies, but with the usual post-Tony show shutterings, Gypsy can only be helped by the sell-outs at some theatres and the closings at others.

Having watched "Big" this week I moved on to the cast CDs of "Big", "Baby" and "Starting Here, Starting Now". there are some wonderful songs in these scores.

Hope you are all sending those good vibes to William and Joe who are a-courting today.

Susan: Vibes of the good kind from OZ to your friend's daughter.

Susan: What a horrendous thing for anyone to undergo, much less a young person.

What is her prognosis? What treatments are they using? Are they trying to dissolve it in any way? Given where it is, I suppose it's very delicate to treat.

Right now, I'm wearing jeans. (Consider this a High Anxiety reference.)

DVD player: The Right Stuff. Love this film; it always makes me think of my father. The documentary material on the second disc was well worth waiting for.

CD: Soundtrack for "The Living Sea." Earlier this week, I was trying to make out what Fierstein was singing on the Hairspray OCR without referring to the lyric sheets, but had to give up. Totally hopeless.

And Susan, add me to the list of vibe-senders.

CD Burner: "Famous Blue Raincoat - the songs of Leonard Cohen" for a dear reader. (CAMELOT is up next for a dear reader; and. . .should an Australia dwelling dear reader need CLOSER THAN EVER, this is the place).

DVD PLAYER: Two from Warner Home Video:
GIANT - magnificent film, but, oh, the transfer. . .GIANT never looked great when I saw it on repertory screens, but, sadly, it doesn't look as good as other Warner restorations. .
ROBIN HOOD - THE PRINCE OF THIEVES: which has some nice moments of acting, a not too shoddy script, but, oh, that Kevin. Often, I found myself laughing as if I were watching Brooks' MEN IN TIGHTS!
MEN IN BLACK II - sometimes you just feel like something nutty.
THE PIANIST - wow. wow. wow.

VCR: The 2003 TONY AWARDS.

François: Yes, when I heard that one I laughed! I was sitting at my desk in the office and the person across from me asked me what was so funny.

I'll be on in two weeks, on June 25, with another review.

TD: I love that Nancy LaMott CD. I have them all but I think that's one of my favorites.

Posted by Ben @ 06/13/2003 07:26 PM PST

td: Much appreciated offer "up on which I will take". Isn't the new Cd of NINE wonderful.
Sorry to hear that "Giant" is not as good as should be. I always felt that the film was let down badly by those "Aged scenes" at the end. Not a good example of the art of make-up at all IMHO.
My partner Colin would still rate "East Of Eden" as his favourite movie ever.

Posted by Tom from Oz @ 06/13/2003 08:13 PM PST

I have "the bells of st. sebastian" on constant repeat in one cd player, kurt weill's "seven deadly sins" in another (that show is wonderful, but seriously gave me nightmares as a child), and "the full monty" in another.

Many cd players have I. My parents have left me in there apartment for the week, and they have about a billion listening systems. It's kinda fun to put them on all at once.

Well, not really. But I thought it would be before I tried it.

I'm wearing a long-ish purple skirt (it's very very purple) with buttons down the front and a black tank top.

I just saw Spellbound (again) -- have others seen it? I think it's really quite wonderful.

And Susan, my best best best wishes to your daughter's friend...

Posted by Anna @ 06/13/2003 08:31 PM PST

I'm quite partial to Spellbound. My friend Margaret's (to whom Kritzerland is dedicated) father is in it briefly as, I think, an elevator man (Dave Willock - the GREAT Dave Willock, so good in Queen From Outer Space and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane). It's a nice Gregory Peck to watch in tribute to that lovely man.

Has everyone gone to sleep? Is anybody there? Does anybody care? Does anybody see what I see?

Too early for me to sleep, BK!

In response to some Dear Readers:

Francois: Nancy LaMott on cd, it doesn't get much better than that voice with that impeccable choice of material! IF I had to pick a "favorite" Nancy cd, though, I think I would have to go with "My Foolish Heart."

Tom from OZ: Regarding NINE; yes! this is the way that I've always wanted to hear NINE! And, Maltby and Shire shall follow "Camelot" in the dvd burner. . .

BK: where in tarnation IS everyone?!?!?!?

Posted by td @ 06/13/2003 09:14 PM PST

Oh! one other thing. . .the aging make-up in GIANT is brilliant compared to the aging make-up in FUNNY LADY or DEAD AGAIN. . .

Posted by td @ 06/13/2003 09:15 PM PST

Where was I, you ask? I was driving to the post office to send a postcard to our lovely Dear Reader Jason.

Posted by Laura @ 06/13/2003 09:34 PM PST

It's Ben who was answering
your choice of LaMott cd but...
that's all right, because,
thanks to a Dear Reader who
should post tomorrow, I too
have all her recordings. :- )

Another hot day/night here in
Paris!.......

I woke up this morning of Friday the thirteenth with a black cat sleeping on my face. See? Just another normal day. Then I watched PBS for a few hours and then we went to the zoo. Have you missed me? Since Career Exploration is over, I have nothing witty and/or urbane to talk about.

Posted by Sandra @ 06/13/2003 09:44 PM PST

Ah, Francois! You, aussi, will enjoy each and every Nancy cd! And you'll understand why it is tres difficile to chose only one as a favorite!
Now, let's all have a posting frenzy! (Ah! an Alfred Hitchcock reference)!

Posted by td @ 06/13/2003 09:48 PM PST

I'm still here (a Follies reference)...actually, I just got home. Let me add another eBay arrival:

On my turntable (vinyl record player): ABBACADABRA, the original French (and only) cast recording with "Musique" by Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Stig Anderson and "Livret et textes" by Alain & Daniel Boublil. It's in French. I'll have to go to http://world.altavista.com/ to translate it.

Posted by George @ 06/13/2003 09:49 PM PST

Yes, Sandra, you are missed, which is why I wrote your mother that e-mail - your absence has been most unseemly and you must knock it off or be bitch-slapped from here to eternity. It doesn't matter if you have witty things to say or not - even I, the Queen of Wit, am not witty all the time, witness today's fershluganah notes.

Posted by bk @ 06/13/2003 09:52 PM PST

Dear Reader Sandra, Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo. I do believe it, I do believe it's true.
Was your zookeeper awfully fond of rum?
YOU are missed, please, don't be so errant and truant!

Posted by td @ 06/13/2003 09:56 PM PST

Even Sandra Dee
Was not always witty!

All I have to say about Nancy Lamott's My Foolish Heart is..."mmmmmmmmmm..."

I'd never listened to her before my parents (and me by sort of forced extension) because avid devotes of Jonathan Schwartz' weekend music radio program, and he simply adores Nancy Lamott, plays her all the time, and thus we discovered her! Like penicillin! Eureka!

She's just...mmmmmmm...good.

I really ought to go to sleep.

But I have no inclination to do so...it's quite dreadful. How does one get back on a proper sleep time table?

I'm now wearing grey pants and a large black tee shirt with a very large picture of a fish on it.

Good morning, good day.

In the CD player right now is 'Simply Sondheim' by the Gay Men's Chorus of L.A. which I am enjoying immensely. Just arrived this morning, but it's on the second play already. Joanna Gleason is on one track as well.

In the car CD, several CDs by Mr Anthony Warlow - courtesy of young Thomas of Ozland.

In the DVD player, a film I picked up in Spain 'The Death of Lorca', which stars Nicholas Grace, who seems to be saying his part in English, which has then been dubbed into Spanish, although all the other actors are speaking Spanish. Must be strange to work like that.

I got the Criterion SPELLBOUND, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I'm hoping for the best as I've always enjoyed the film and the famous score.

I meant to say that La Nuit Americaine is better known in the ISA as Day For Night and won many awards including an Oscar for Best Foreign film. Valentian Cortese was nominated the same year as Ingrid Bergman won for Murder on the Orient Express and apologize to VC for winning. IB tought VC was goign to win. I watched it with original French soundtrack. It is interesting to note that some of the English subtitles are not exactly acurate. The English soundtrack which I only saw so far in Coming Atraction seemed awful. I am not a 100% sure but Jacquelien Bisset, JEan Piere Aumon and Valentina Cortese did who all speak English did not not dub their own voices.

I also watch the documentaries. All done by Laurent Bozoroff. (Intential spelling) Can someone tell me whu they break up these doctumentaries instead of making one long one. These documenatries were nothing more than talking heads. Reallu boring.

That of course should be "La Nuit Americaine is better known in the USA as Day For Night. Of course the ISA is the origanization that lexander Munday worked for in the TV series It takes a Thief.
