"PUT ON YOUR SUNDAY CLOTHES"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, we will be having our very first Kritzerland signing come next Saturday at Bookfellows in Glendale, California. I will have complete details for you in the next few days, and I do hope some of our West Coast Hainsie/Kimlet dear readers and lurkers will come and help make the signing a successful one. I will be reading from the book, there will be refreshments galore (including cheese slices and ham chunks and cake) and the whole affair should be quite sparkling.

Last night I went to a friend’s screening room to see a movie and the evening turned out to be a tribute to the late Mr. Gregory Peck. We saw Spellbound and then Cape Fear was shown. In attendance was Mr. Melville Shavelson, the director of The Five Pennies which, of course, starred our very own Susan Gordon. Unfortunately I was not able to speak to him about said Susan Gordon because he arrived late and then left immediately after Spellbound. Spellbound was, as always, very entertaining – and I always enjoy the Salvador Dali-designed dream sequence. In addition to Mr. Peck and Miss Ingrid Bergman, the supporting players are excellent, especially Mr. Leo G. Carroll. I didn’t stick around for Cape Fear since I’d seen it not too long ago.

Don’t forget, tonight is our Unseemly Live Chat which will begin promptly at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time. Do come by, for these chats are just too too, and there are always sparkling revelations that are only revealed in the chat room. Be there or be round.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because if we don’t this whole site could explode to smithereens or, at the very least, jonesareens.

The singing bird is back in my good graces. Its midnight warbling is no more, and it is currently outside on this beautiful Sunday singing Put on your Sunday Clothes, which I shall do momentarily. Right now I do not have my Sunday Clothes on, I have my Saturday night things on, but soon I shall have my Sunday Clothes on and I shall parade around my neighborhood grandly in my beads and buckles and bows because, frankly, there’s no blue Monday in your Sunday clothes. What the hell am I talking about?

Don’t forget, Donald will have a brand spanking new radio show up at some point today and I’m quite certain it will be a corker. Perhaps someday Donald will do a show devoted to the singing bird.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must put on my Sunday clothes, I must take the latest batch of book pages to my friend Margaret for her mental delectation and I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs and then prepare for the Unseemly Live Chat. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Sunday – free-for-all day, the day in which you get to discuss any old thing your collective hearts desire. For those who don’t have contributions to make when the topic is one they don’t have knowledge with, here is the perfect opportunity to start a topic which you are intimately acquainted with. So, post away, my pretties, and I shall be checking back often to make certain we are not lagging or lollygagging, post-wise, and then I shall see you all at chat.

- Bruce Kimmel

Hello Hello there (oh, a Comden and Green reference)...

Ok.. I'll start a topic of the day by asking a question that has been asked before.. but what the heck..

Besides being a regular here.. what other internet sites does everyone frequent? Here's a list of some of mine

All That Chat
MSN
Broadwayworld.com
Broadwaystars.com
a few newsgroups
a few online journals of friends
bored.com
dvdpricesearch.com
dvdfile.com

just to name a few...

HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL FATHERS EVERYWHERE!!!

Posted by Craig @ 06/15/2003 09:35 AM PST

All right, here's a question for everyone: What are your favorite reference books? You know, the ones you regularly turn to when you're stuck for an answer, or just want to get some ideas?

For cooking, I often turn to The Joy of Cooking, and Bittman's How to Cook Everything. I also like Julia Child's The Way to Cook.

These books are terrible when I have a theater question, however. For those questions, I like to start with Steven Suskin's Opening Nights on Broadway, and More Opening Nights on Broadway. He wasn't very creative when it came to naming the second book, but going over the reviews written about plays in comparison with each other is fascinating, and there's enough other information in the books to give me ideas on where to look next.

I totally forgot it was Father's Day until I received a lovely e-card from the darling daughter.

Good Morning, Craig! And happy Dad's day to you, too! (And to BK and everyone else, of course!)

I regularly check in over at Sondheim.com, a long-time hangout of mine. I particularly like the kids over there, in high school or college. The phrase "a blank page or canvas" comes to mind.

I also like to check in over at eGullet.com, because of all the food connections I can make there.

I'm sorta boring when it comes to internet sites. . .but the sites themselves are NEVER boring!

www.scarletstreet.com for the forums of course.
www.hometheaterforum.com to chat with the likes of Mr. Robert "my middle name is restoration" Harris and our very own Joe Caps; and if I'm not mistaken, a certain Mr. Bruce Kimmel has been known to drop by, too.
www.imdb.com reference for film casts, rarely anything else.
www.allmusic.com which I highly recommend for popular music reference.
www.dvdlaunch.com for obvious reasons.

I'm wearing khaki shorts and a wolf-covered tee-shirt.

Happy Father's Day, BK!

I *might* NOT be a chat tonight, since Matt and I have a ton of work to do on new material. . .

Hello Dear Readers,

I'm sorry to have been absent and quiet, and E&T, but I'm trying to kick myself in the rear to re-join the world, and this lovely bunch of Hainsies/Kimlets.

The short "nutshell version:" a week ago DR Kerry and I had to deal with the passing away of our wonderful little 4-legged child, Mazal. She was a fairly small black Lab, with the most wonderful, sweet, affectionate nature and disposition. She was just a few weeks away from her 14th (human years) birthday, and most of the time she still acted as if she were about 14 to 18 months old. She was blessed, in that she never had any major diseases, and the only thing she had to endure was a knee operation this past December. She was here at home, laying on her own favorite doggie bed and with her head cradled in Kerry's hand, and she just slipped away. I don't understand it, and I hate it.

Her name, Mazal, was given to her out of respect for her human birth home and parents. They were friends who were Jewish, and we told them that Mazal would be brought up remembering her traditions. And she was; she had her own Star of David ornament with her name on it that went on the Christmas tree each year (Mazal wasn't Orthodox, so it was OK), and when she turned 13 Kerry got her a special doggie version of a Bat Mitzvah cake to celebrate. Out of respect for her memory, this past week has had the mirror in the living room covered, and I had a group of her photographs on the table with a small Yahrzeit memorial candle lit in the evenings for her.

I know she is free, comfortable, and in a happy place. It has been the worst week for Kerry and I, and her loss makes a pain that is horrible. Just reading some of your notes the past few days has given me some smiles and a few chuckles, just as BK said they would (bless him), and I thank you all for being the most wonderful group of crazies on the net.

Thanks for letting me tell all this. And I promise to return to non-serious, irreverant posts soon.

I'm not sure I'll be at the chat tonight. A dear friend of mine finally finished the last round of legal "crap" for a case he's dealing with yesterday (who knew you to use "international papers" for legal correspondence?), and a bunch of us are "helping" him decompress tonight. -The calm before the storm so to speak - he'll get the final decision tomorrow or Tuesday. So, I might be in the midst of a night of semi-debauchery during the chat... But if I'll check in once I get back.

As for sites... Mainly newpaper sites for me:

nytimes.com
washingtonpost.com
times-dispatch.com (Richmond paper)
styleweekly.com (the Richmond Village Voice, kinda-sorta)

Theatre sites:
haineshisway.com (of course)
playbill.com
broadway.com
sondheim.com

Food sites:
epicurious.com (Gourmet's and Bon Appetit's parent site)
foodtv.com
allrecipes.com
egullet.com

As for book references, most of it is cooking related so:

How To Cook Everything
The Joy of Cooking
The Cook's Bible
Flat Breads and Flavors, and the other books by this author-photographer couple.

Theatre reference:
Let's Put On A Musical
The catalogs from MTI, Samuel French, Tams-Witmark, Applause, etc.

For my origami:
Origami Omnibus
Origami for Connoissuers
Origami for Everyone
Origami: from Angel Fish to Zen (GREAT introductory chapter, text-wise)
And the other books by Montroll and Kasahara.

Oh, and speaking of topics... Did we ever bring to fruition the possible topic that was discussed at Joe Allen during the second night's dinner?:

-If there was a theme park called Kritzerland, what sort of rides, kiosks, restaurants, etc. would there be?

Of course, the most obvious was the "What Is It, Fish? Restaurant" - complete with an "Grandpa's Bathroom". AND it would be the only place open in the park - and only open - during the Sabbath.

BK,

Regarding Michael Shayne's

I do believe Sandy is wrong,
wrong, wrong!!!!!

I somehow can't picture our

evenless Sandy Duncan....

Does she really KNOW who Mr

MusicGuy,

We're having special thoughts
fro Mazal, Kerry and you.

I'm sure she's just chatting
away with Mr Peck right now!...
and they don't need the
internet, oh no! Just eternity....

DR Music Guy and DR Kerry - My deepest sympathies on the passing of Mazal. Like the two of you, I have four-legged children and as is the case with anyone’s children, they are my reason for living. Having lost three children over the years, I know the pain you are both suffering. Just know that there are many of us here; ready to offer comfort or a large shoulder to lean on at anytime.

OK folks - it was time to turn the tables on BK and ask HIM some questions... An in depth interview with our own BK is now up. To read it, click here:

ride starring Sandy as.....

Posted by François @ 06/15/2003 11:54 AM PST

BK and Dear Readers - I am afraid that I will have to be round this evening, since after the matinee, I have dinner plans with out-of-town guests who are attending the show.

With that, I am off to sing Put On Your Sunday Clothes, at least from the wings, since Horace isn't allowed much opportunity to sing onstage.

Posted by TCB @ 06/15/2003 11:55 AM PST

I'm sitting here, still in my green khakis and red shirt from church this morning and I'm reading "Kritzerland" and just can't put it down. The story is so fun and so vivid, it makes one wish they grew up in Benjamin's neighborhood and actually knew this kid. I'm so hooked, I'll cry when the book is over, I know I will.

The sites that I most frequently frequent are:

www.haineshisway.com
www.dvdjournal.com
http://musicals.eur.com
www.playbill.com
www.tmtfanclub.com
www.tvguide.com

I will not be able to attend tonight's chat. I'm just about to go to my sister's house to help steam clean her carpet, then at about 5:00 p.m. or so we're taking our dad out to dinner. Our mom has to work (she's a nurse and works today from 3 p.m. until midnight). Tomorrow is her birthday and next Sunday is their 38th wedding anniversary. June is definately busting out all over (a R&H reference). Have a good chat!!

Posted by George @ 06/15/2003 01:11 PM PST

Well, apparently no one will be at tonight's chat, according to these here posts. Not very sporting if you ask me.

I do not know Sandy Duncan - I've met her once or twice but have never had a conversation with her. Hence, it would not be possible for me to hate her. I know her husband, Don, better than I know her. I have no idea why she would say such a silly thing unless she was goaded or was joking.

Shall we just cancel tonight's chat?

Also, Craig did a very good job on the interview so do go read it - it's one of the few times I've actually talked about a certain subject - not a lot, but I talk about it.

Posted by bk @ 06/15/2003 01:31 PM PST

I'm standing here in this cornfield eating my Wheat Thins® trying to figure out why some other site said I hated Bruce Kimmel. Then I remembered what site it was and who was doing the interview; I just said what I thought he and the people who now run the site wanted to hear.

Posted by Sandy Duncan @ 06/15/2003 01:42 PM PST

I'll check in to see if chat is on or off. I have a bunch of things to do tonight, so I would not be upset if there was no chat, but if there is I'll join in for a short time.

Ray's sister had an eye operation Friday (where she was awake the whole time they were making the incisions) and has to spend the next couple of weeks lieing face down in a special bed. Since her husband can barely boil water I have spent the last four hours cooking for her and in a few minutes we will be bringing it over along with some tapes of old radio programs since she obviously can't watch television.

Regarding Sandy Duncan, the two times I saw her she had problems remembering her lines, so maybe she has memory problems and just said the first thing that came into her head about Bruce.

[And there was no intentional link between Ms. Dennis and Ray's sister's eye problems.]

Sandy,

You're a fake... why don't you fly
away!

Posted by François @ 06/15/2003 01:52 PM PST

I believe Sandy thinks
Isadora's her sister!...

Old age, you know!

Posted by François @ 06/15/2003 01:54 PM PST

I can't be at the chat tonight, either. Monday nights usually work better for me, and 8 p.m. chats work better than 9 p.m. too.

Sorry to hear about Mazal. I'll remember you both in my thoughts.

Looking forward to reading the BK interview.

Hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful Sunday (at least it's beautiful in my neck of the woods - NC).

First, let me convey our (Bill's and mine) sympathy to DR Kerry & MusicGuy. We lost our little girl Sabrina over a year ago, and I still miss her. But, as the saying goes, when God closes a door he opens a window (or something like that) and we now have Phoebe, which we got when she was about a year old and just celebrated her 2nd birthday. So, even though you never stop missing loved ones, eventually your hearts will heal enough to allow more love in.

We just got back from visiting my sister, Carol, who just had eye surgery. She's diabetic and developed macular degeneration, which apparently is common in diabetics. Over the past year, she has undergone 4 courses of laser treatment, and countless other non surgical medical treatments, all with little or no positive affect. The surgery is sort of the "last resort". If this doesn't help to improve her vision (or at least stop the progression of the disease) then the outlook is quite bleak - eventual permanent blindness in at least the one eye - the other eye isn't as advanced, and there has been some mild improvement with the laser surgery in that eye. So I'm just keeping good thoughts and good vibes going her way!

Chat in fifteen minutes.

BK--I will be at chat! And I'm loving Benjamin Kritzer--I was reading it during my breaks at work today, and I'm already up to Chapter 5!

DRs MusicGuy and Kerry--so sorry to hear about Mazal. Last year I lost my tortoiseshell cat Tatie (her real name was Pearl but we called her that because she oft resembled a big baked potato when she lay on my bed), and it was horribly painful. Pets really do have a way of becoming real family members.

I now need to go back and read the last week's worth of posts.

DR Ray: I specialize in eye surgery; it sounds like your sister had what's called a vitrectomy; there is an 85-90% success rate with this surgery for mac degeneration and detached retina. Most all of the patients are diabetic. Sometimes, it has to be repeated (more lasering) once or twice, but it's good surgery.

DR Kerry and MusicGuy: I am so sad for you for the loss of your baby, my heartfelt condolences. I will give my sheepdog, Goldie, lots of extra hugs tonight.

BK: Happy Father's Day, and to all you Papas out there...
