Happy Fourth of July everyone! I'm FREE of WORK for a day!!
I am watching Giant in my DVD player. I watch about an hour, then go back and do the commentary on that hour. Fun.
I am at this moment listening to the early 60s Brasilian group Os Gatos. Beautiful bossa nova arrangements of Jobim and unlikely other choices like Days of Wine and Roses (all right, not all the unlikely).
BK, in the synchronicity department--the clarinet player in Peter Pan was just last night asking me on a break what I thought he could get on eBay for a signed program of the original Brubeck quartet--Brubeck, Desmond, Morello and Wright all signed! I told him I thought at least $100. Wanna make him an offer he can't refuse? :)
Still waiting to hear about my most excellent trivia suggestion.

P.S. (Since no one else seems to be alive today, the one day I am able to post here!): Re: Captain from Castile. In another synchronicity department development, one of the producers of that CD just bought a bunch of vintage mags from me off of eBay. We had fun sharing emails about various and sundried Hainsies and Kimlets.
And re: Giant. In the commentary, George Stevens, Jr. says Leslee's birthstate was changed from Virginia to Maryland because of threats of a libel suit, but they don't (at least so far) elaborate. Does anyone know what that was about? Did the state of Virginia threaten to sue?

It's the 4th of July!
In my CD player: the brand new Antonio Bandares cast recording of NINE. When I got this CD a few days ago, I realized that I hadn't actually listened to the score in years. My 80+minute cassette bit the dust and I never got the original CD release. I really like it and can't wait to get the remastered 2-disc original cast recording.
In my DVD player: "What's, Up Doc?" I just got this yesterday!
In my sister's VCR: "Independence Day" with Will Smith and Tony Award Winner Harvey Fierstein (even though he dies). Every year my family gets together and we watch one of two movies, one every other year...this year it's "Independence Day". On the other years, it's "1776".
Well, that's it for me. I'm leaving to go to my sister's for the day.
Party safe!

Happy 4th of July!
Well, I actually had some ham and cheese yesterday - and they were slices instead of chunks - Is that OK? However, I just had my brunch, and had some pretty good chorizo - well, at least it's another pork product. Cheese will come later today.
As for the topic of today... Hmm... Nothing in any of my players right now. We have first preview tomorrow afternoon, then open Sunday night. Hopefully, Monday I'll be able to get some good listening and watching time in my schedule.
I'll check in after the fireworks tonight... well, after rehearsal for me.
Have a great day!
And don't forget the sunscreen!

Oh, George! Thanks for that bit of news. I LOVE What's Up, Doc and it's good to know it's now on DVD! (favorite scenes: Madeline Kahn being dragged from the ballroom; Mabel Albertson being tripped every time she tries to leave the hotel lobby).
DVDs, new and on deck to be watched:
Giant, The Pianist, The Hours, the first three Lethal Weapon films in DTS, the first two Die Hard films in DTS, A Bug's Life, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (DTS) and Some Like it Hot.
Still in my CD player: All the BK-produced Sondheim albums, plus Merrily We Roll Along, On A Clear Day..., The Apple Tree, Purlie, the new 2-CD remastered OBC to Nine, and the recent Nine with Banderas and Krakowski.
New books: Four of Ethan Mordden's Broadway Musicals series (I have the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s).
If it doesn't get too warm this afternoon, I'm going to fire up the barbie and grill some ribs, some burgers and a couple of steaks (N.Y. strips). This will surely fill the bill for the rest of my 4-day weekend (taking Monday off).
For all my fellow H/K's, may this 4th day of July 2003 see you all get the huge bangs you richly deserve. : )

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY EVERYBODY!
I've decided to throw a Mini Katherine Hepburn Film Festival for myself. I especially want to catch some of those early films I never saw. The first one I could find is LITTLE WOMEN, so that's what's in my VCR.
P.S. Click on my name to go to the Cabaret West website. The July calendar is up (choose Now Appearing) and in Spotlight is Robert Glenn.

Wow! It's the 4th of July! And tomorrow it's even better because it'll be the 5th of July!
I'm a bitter canuck who had to work today. :(
Did I ever tell you all the true story of how in 1812 Canadians burned down your original White House? Now would be an appropriate time but I have to get back to the old grindstone quickly... ;)
The AV Roll Call:
CD: I'm still getting my money's worth with the OBC of A Man of No Importance
DVD/VHS: "Little Voice" for the gazillionth time. I love Ewan MacGregor. I also love his blue Lacoste 70s-esque windbreaker which he dons repeatedly in this movie (which I know is out of character for the poor pigeon boy).

JMK - I think the lawsuits had to do with the Texas family that saw itself in Ferber's Benedict family, and one of its members was born in Virginia....Ferber websites and some James Dean biographies talk about the incidents.
Hahaha....on my parents first date together they went to see CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE!
In my DVD (new) player is JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. I have also been watching some Allison Hayes DVD-CW's that DR MBarnum made for me. JMK did you see Allison on the GIANT extras at the Hollywood premiere?
Very HOT today, so headed for my sister's house and the pool!
Joanie Sommers in the CD player and WHAT'S UP DOC in the VCR...I don't have the DVD yet!

performance of Sound of
Music. We perform at a lovely
outdoor theater on a hill
overlooking town, but
unfortunately they just added
an extra wall yesterday so we
won't be watching fireworks

grand and glorious celebration
after the show.

A quick story about Roman Polanski's The Tenant. My brother Joey and I saw it when it was first released, and it spooked me. Do you remember the scene in which "the tenant" discovers the previous tenant's tooth behind the wardrobe in a hole in the wall? At the time, my brother was visiting me. I lived (as a tenant) in an old house that had seen better days. One afternoon, some time after my brother had returned home, I was heading down to my basement. I spotted a tissue tucked into one of the crevices in the wall. Curiosity got the better of me. I plucked out the old tissue, unwrapped it, and found ... a very toothlike cashew. Thanks, Joey.

Sorry that attendance has been off a bit today, but I guess folks are celebrating. I just got back from being at a friend's pool most of the afternoon, and I'm invited to a cookout tonight, so lotsw going on.
In my media devices:
CD - NINE, new Broadway cast recording
VCR - MURDER SHE SAID with Margaret Rutherford
DVD - EXPERIMENT IN TERROR
The Katharine Hepburn film festival sounds like a good idea for tomorrow. Haven't seen the aforementioned LITTLE WOMEN in a long time so that will be pulled out along with probably DESK SET (widescreen naturally, saw bits of it in pan and scan on AMC yesterday, and it CAN'T BE SEEN AND APPRECIATED THAT WAY!!!)
Happy 4th, everyone!

Spent last night and most of today helping a buddy move! It is funny, no matter how many boxes of junk or sticks of furnishings you take out of the house, there always, ALWAYS, seems to be an endless amount still to move out!
In the DVD player:
Two double features dvds of foreign cinematic treasures of the 50s/60s...from Mexico we have DOCTOR OF DOOM and WRESTLING WOMEN VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY and from Italy DEATH IS NIMBLE, DEATH IS QUICK and SO DARLING, SO DEADLY both starring former Hercules/Samson actor Brad Harris

Happy 4th of July to everyone! Mine has sucked so far because I had to work but I'm off now and will go and party later tonight.
Emily--Isn't Little Voice such a great movie? The girl who played her, Jane Horrocks, was amazing the way she was able to impersonate the voices of Judy Garland, Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe. I wonder what she's been up to lately.
BK--I finished Kritzerland! I loved it, although the near-ending (once again) was sad and made me cry again...but I loved the surprise at the end! Can't wait to read the third installment when it comes out and I will write my Amazon review soon.
DVD--Gangs of New York. I thought it was a good movie overall, but it dragged at parts and the bravura of the fight scenes kind of overshadowed the emotional impact. Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing though.
CD--Emily Skinner's and Alice Ripley's Duets produced by BK. You know the thought occured to me when they did that medley of My Own Best Friend and Nowadays that if they can dance, Emily would be a great Roxie and Alice would rule as Velma. And I love the hidden track...I didn't discover it till just now.
As usual, I've gone on too long...have fun everybody!
Posted by Maya @ 07/04/2003 03:52 PM PST
Maya: Jane Horrocks really does kick some serious booty in Little Voice. Unfortunately, her acting career following that role (according to IMDB at least) has her in a string of cartoons and made for tv movies. However, she DID play Babs in Nick Parks' "Chicken Run" (which I believe is the neurotic knitting chicken).
Posted by Emily @ 07/04/2003 04:01 PM PST
BK - I was going to send you more gummi bears this week but if you are just going to set them on fire I can burn them here myself.
Chat on Sunday again? Are we no longer alternating between Sunday and Monday? It was Sunday last week.
In CD - A compilation of early Lisa Kirk singles (late 40s and early 50s). Her voice is not as distinctive on pop recordings as it is on her few OBCs but it is fun anyway.
In DVD - We watched THOROUGHLY MODERN JULIE last night. I haven't seen the film in years and it was interesting to compare it to the musical. The musical did the right thing in cutting two of the four original songs: "The Tapioca" is okay but "The Jewish Wedding Song" looks like it came from another movie. Also I can no longer enjoy Carol Channing after reading her autobiography and BK's comments regarding the recording of the DOLLY revival. Still the songs she has are much better than the weak material they gave Muzzie in the musical. And if Fox Movies has cancelled showing Charlie Chan movies because of protests from Asian groups, can MILLIE be far behind? As funny as it is (on film and on stage) it is probably the most offensive racial stereotypes I've seen in years.

CDS: Lost i Boston 1-4, Broadway Bound and The Stephen Schwartz Album
DVD: Best of Laugh-In, It's My Party (Had Me In Tears), the TV remake of Don't Drink the Water. Were the American husband and wife originally written that way. Ugly Americans. I was ready to turn them over to the communists. They were always putting their foot in their mouth. Horrible shrill acting from Woody Allen and Julie Kavner. Also up What's Up Doc and the documentary Lost in Mancha that detailed Terry Gilliam failed attempt to bring the Man of La Mancha story to the screen. Lots of extras on that one.

My Joe and I are having a quiet Fourth, waiting for the fireworks on TV. Meanwhile, we just listened to "Earl Wild Plays His Transcriptions of Gershwin", and now "Marni Nixon Sings Gershwin" with Lincoln Mayorga on the piano.
As to which song typifies me. Ah, "Watching the Show" and "The Road You Didn't Take" when I'm feeling down. "Finishing the Hat" and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy" when I'm feeling up. And when I'm really in a nasty mood--"Epiphany".

Three new CDs added to the collection this week, with two disappointments to the one worth listening to.
Disappointment #1: The Maury Yeston Songbook. Proof that Tommy Krasker is no BK. Too many of the songs lack spark, or something, in the performances. Too many songs, back to back, have little more than a piano backing the singers. And too many of the songs are just plain bleak. Not a good set.
Disappointment #2: Mandy Patinkin in Concert: Celebrating Sondheim. Again, it's just a piano and the singer, but this time I can forgive the format more because it is a concert recording and Paul Ford is the man at the keys. What I cannot forgive is Mandy Patinkin being depressive rather than manic, sapping the joy out of every song. Sondheim deserves better treatment than this disc.
On the other hand, Lauren Kennedy: Songs of Jason Robert Brown makes my ears happy. They team well together (Brown also served as musical director and accompanies Kennedy on nearly every track). Also, it's a good variety of songs, from his past projects, from his dropped projects, and new material. "I'd Give It All For You," where they both sing, is my new favorite love song.
I think I'll be digging up The Music Man to slip into the DVD player tonight. Yeah, it's traditional, but tonight deserves some tradition. I've already got the ground beef mixed for hamburgers (with minced onion and celery and a few spices blended in), and there's fresh corn and potato salad waiting in the fridge. The neighborhood has been popping with enough fireworks all day that I doubt anyone will have any left for tonight.
Happy 4th, everyone!

In my computer's CD/DVD drive: the York Theatre Company recording of "Merrily We Roll Along."
In my computer's anime collection: Air Master - it's a show about a gymnast turned street fighter in the alleyways of Japan.
I'm also having a major argument with myself over Ruthie's name for her daughter - Lily. It's a story that scares me to this very day.

S. Woody: can you explain how on "I'd Give It All For You" from the Songs of JRB it is possible that New Englander JRB has a very discernable (and IMHO distasteful and distracting) Southern accent?
too much time working on the score to Urban Cowboy perhaps? ;)

Emily, this is your song!
Emily, Emily, Emily

And the laughter of children at
play
They say "Emily, Emily, Emily"
And we fade to a marvelous
view
Two lovers alone and out of

Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see dreamily, Emily

I really hadn't noticed JRB's "southern" accent, Emily. I suppose that's because I don't find it distracting at all, and certainly not distasteful. And I doubt that Urban Cowboy is the sole "southern" influence he's had in his life and on his music. After all, Parade is also set in the south, with it's book written by that southern gentleman Alfred Uhry. (If one is going to have a southerner in one's life, Uhry strikes me as the right kind of southerner to have.)

I'm back to the new cast recording of Nine after a brief interlude with Johnny Tillotson and Carl Dobkins Jnr. Yesterday was Buffy Sainte Marie and Bobbie Gentry.
There are so many wonderfully moving moments in the score of "Nine".
Posted by Tom from Oz @ 07/04/2003 09:47 PM PST
Call me obvious, but my movie selection today was "1941."
No, "1984."
Just kidding -- "1776"!
But I should specify it wasn't the new revisionist-history "Director's On Second (Or Third?) Thought Edition DVD," but rather the VHS I made of someone else's full-length laserdisc of the complete-as-originally-filmed cut of the film.
Why -- which version do you guys prefer?
Are you of the director-always-knows-best school? Or of the director-used-to-know-but-doesn't-quite-just-lately school . . .
Posted by Sigerson Holmes @ 07/04/2003 09:49 PM PST
I prefer the complete laserdisc version of "1776". (I bought it brand new. Even though laserdiscs were well on the way out, I had to have it because it was the only way to get the complete movie. It was the very first laserdisc that I ever bought.) Both my sister and dad don't like it, though. They say it's too long. What do they know??
The "remastered" DVD isn't bad, but in "Piddle Twiddle and Resolve" the second verse is cut and it's very obvious in the audio track. On the laserdisc you can tell where the cut section has been reinstated because the picture quality is not good as good as the rest of the movie, but the audio is great. It sounds like one complete, unedited song. I made a CD of the songs from the laserdisc audio with bits of dialogue (or dialog, if you prefer) leading into songs where appropriate. I think that it's better than the "offical" motion picture soundtrack, IMHO (In My Humble Opinion in Internet lingo). Of course I would. I made it.
Posted by George @ 07/04/2003 10:35 PM PST
1776 was the first film directed by Peter Hunt. While I enjoy the full laserdisc version of the film, it has it's share of directorial errors that a more seasoned director wouldn't have made. And yes, I agree that some of the cuts made for the DVD are obvious. However, no matter what version I watch I do so understanding that the film is flawed. (Part of the blame belongs to Jack Warner, with his fingers itching to edit the film to his own liking even before the first shot was in the can.) The DVD perhaps best gives us an idea of how Hunt would direct the film if he had the opportunity to do so today. Put me in the school of "The Director Knows the Craft Better Now Than He Did Back Then."
Posted by S. Woody White @ 07/04/2003 11:34 PM PST
I worked yesterday and then had dinner (hamburgers, homemade fries and more fries) and watched frieworks form a friend's aprtment balcony. This year the city's big fireworks show was moved from downtonw to a park about 4 blocks form my frined's apt., so the firworks were right in front of us. Very impressive.
In the DVD:
Desk Set fom the other night when DR Music Guy and I watched it
Cassettes: Ron Romanovsky's "Hopeful Romantic"
A compilation tape of a little Petula Clark, Johnny Tillotson, two songs from "Follow That Dream" (when Elvis still had brown hair), Bobbie Gentry and more Petula Clark.
CD: "Lost Horizon"
Michael Bublé
Oh, and yestrerday's topic of songs to describe us, the title of the one song is "Pieces of Dreams" not "Little Boy Lost." I was so lost I forgot the title. I took yesterday's question (and certainly my answer) to mean the entire text of the songs and not just the titles.

Well S. Woody, I hope you didn't take my comments to be disrespectful to southerners. I think it is great that Americans from the South have been able to keep their unique accents in a world of mass communications.
What I do have a problem with is when a performer puts on an accent which clearly is not his native method of inflection - or at least not when it's not for any good reason (such as would be the case of the actors putting on Irish accents in A Man of No Importance for example.) I have heard several versions of songs sung by JRB and it is only on "I'd Give it All For You" that he has a very noticeable twang. For God's sakes, the man sings "I had a house while you were gone" as "I had a house while you were GO-R-N!"
I love the song, and JRB, but that accent is not only fake, but annoyingly fake IMHO.

Wasn't "Red, White and Blue Pantaloons" the flip side of "Tan Shoes with Pink Shoelaces"?
And while we're on the subject of Dodie Stevens, I thought I'd mention that in honor of our very own Susan Gordon since Dodie Stevens had a hit of "The Five Pennies."
