"RETURN OF THE FLY"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, the Strange Case of The Reappearing Fly continues. I have found and killed at least twelve flies, I have been over every inch of my house trying to figure out where they are coming from and yet I have not found anywhere where they could be coming from and yet they keep coming from somewhere. I haven’t seen any this morning so maybe they’ve gotten the hint that if they manage to find their way into this house they will be hunted down and spoken to in the harshest terms before being swatted with whatever magazine happens to be lying about handily. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Last night a friend of mine screened a 35mm Technicolor print of that marvelous motion picture entertainment, The Music Man. What a wonderful movie it is, still to this day. Why Mr. Meron and Mr. Zadan had to remake this is anyone’s guess – why they felt they had to denigrate the original just makes them look like fools. The original is a just-about-perfect adaptation of a Broadway musical into film. Since it takes place in the early part of the century it is hardly dated as a sixties film, other than it doesn’t have any silly fast cutting or step-printed sped up shots as is so au courant today. It just works – it’s perfectly cast, tells its story, makes us care about the people, and most of all trusts the material. No pandering to audiences of the day and yet audiences of the day embraced it for what it was – a grand and rollicking good show. Mr. Preston has never been bettered in this role – he embodies Harold Hill, he is Harold Hill, unlike Mr. Broderick who plays at it, who comments on it, rather than inhabiting it. One cannot say enough about Onna White’s choreography, which is stunning, especially in Marian the Librarian and the deceptively simple and charming The Sadder but Wiser Girl for Me. The other thing you realize is that there are simply no character actors today who are the equal of the unique and splendid character people we had back then. These people were one-off – Hermoine Gingold, Paul Ford, there was no one else like them. Add to that the likes of Mary Wickes, Jesslyn Fax, and every single bit player (including Hank Worden for one line) and you’ve got a film which is populated by amazing people in every single role. Just compare the movie traveling salesmen to the TV version traveling salesmen in Rock Island Line and it will be abundantly clear. In any case, I love this film and again it makes me wonder what ever happened to Monique Vermont, who played Amaryllis?

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Let’s all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must finish these here notes and write, write, write (that is three writes, so what can be wrong) and then prepare for our Unseemly Live Chat.

Yes, you heard it hear, dear readers, our Unseemly Live Chat is this evening at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time and I do hope that many of you will be able to join us and that there won’t be too too many errant and truant people for me to bitch-slap come morning.

I finally picked up the DVD of What’s Up, Doc? and shall watch it later this evening. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Don’t forget to send Donald your votes about which radio shows you’d like to hear repeated. I’m not sure if today’s will be a repeat or a new one – hopefully he’ll drop by and tell us.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must get myself in the proper frame of mind to begin a new job tomorrow, I must do errands and I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you get to discuss any old topic you like – for example, how are the flies getting into my home? Another topic could be who invented the burp. Post away, my pretties and I’ll be checking in often – and I’ll see you all at chat.

It's noon EST and still no posts...how awful!

I just got the nicest 12 hours of sleep I've ever had...I needed to catch up, I have been severly lacking in those precious Z's. Why do people associate sleeping with Z's? I don't see Z's when I'm falling asleep. That's odd...Good afternoon, everyone!

Dear BK even went to acting school with Monique Vermont. He once wrote:

...the Jerry Bloom Acting School For Young Adults. My parents, in order to appease me, sent me to said acting school. I have very little memory of it, other than that I was very shy and would never volunteer for any of the weird exercises Mr. Bloom would have us do. This was in the summer just before I began high school. Interestingly, there were two people in that class I've never forgotten. One was Monique Vermont, who was a little younger than I and a nice freckle-faced girl. On my first day, I walked in, saw Monique Vermont sitting there and I went into shock. Because Monique Vermont had played Amaryllis in the motion picture of The Music Man! Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I was in acting class with Amaryllis. I found that extremely neat, and we became friends and even spoke on the phone quite a lot.

Where is everybody? It's 10
am here on the west coast, so
perhaps people are still
catching those Z's, or perhaps
catching Q's, but over on the
east coast it's already
afternoon...so no excuses!
I suppose I shouldn't chastise
too much, I've been rather E &
T of late as far as posting
goes, but when the posts are
scarce, I shall do my duty and
post, for I am the slave of duty
(a G&S reference) Since I
didn't post on the 4th, or even
the 5th, I must go back a few
days and say that I had a
simply wonderful 4th of July
celebration with some dear
friends of mine. For the first
time since I was probably 8 or
9, I got to see a real live
professional fireworks display.
Actually to be more accurate, I
saw two. Here in Tacoma
there was one on the
waterfront, and you could see
the large one in Seattle in the
distance. Quite a dazzling
effect, and it was all great fun.
Question, why on earth did
Celine Dion record God Bless
America? She's Canadian for
pete's sake!
bk, sounds to me like a lone fly
got in a while ago and laid an
egg of larvae somewhere in
the house, and said larvae are
now hatched and invading
your house in a most
unseemly manner. The good
news is that, should that prove
to be true, after you kill them
all, they won't be back. I wish
you luck...

I'm off and away to work. I'll check in at the chat when I get home this evening.

I had a fly buzzing around in the house for two days. I finally coaxed it outside, so I feel better now.

Good afteroon!

What a nice day it is today here in Winchester, VA. I ventured out earlier and got a nice two mile run in - I even pushed myself a little bit today by doing some windsprints. Feels good. Just the energy surge I need for today. Opening is tonight, and I'm very excited. So, now I'm putting the finishes touches on the brownies and cake I made last night - LOTS of chocolate!!! And I'll finally be having some brunch.

Because of opening, I will not be able to make it to the chat tonight, but should there be one next week, I will be show-free Sunday and Monday, so I should be able to be there... and not square.. or rectangular for that matter.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

And, BK, may your flies be gone!

Well I am watching DVD's and preparing reports for a board meeting this afternoon.

I shall probably miss the unseemly chat because of said board meeting, unless of course we decide to conduct business only and not become embroiled in personal issues. "Will you members of the school board stop bickering in public!"

I am watching PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES the MGM Midnite Movie DVD of the Mario Bava film. It's a lively film from Italy with lots of terrific color and a very mysterious story.

Getting hot here....flood warnings are still out....some power is out here and there, but I am lucky to have all the power I need....electric power that is.

Mr BK, it seems that perhaps a fly got into your house and laid its eggs and that you are dealing with her offspring. But rest assured that there can only be a few hundred from each batch and they only only live 24 hours.

What Ann said....

Jose, you're in Winchester? I'm here in Ashburn, not too far away from you...I'm actually going to a music camp next week at Shenandoah University, which is in Winchester. It's going to be so much fun...taha. Which reminds me...I won't be here from the 13th to the 27th...long time, I know. I might occasionally be able to get on during the second week, but not a lot. Makes me sad...where SI everyone?

Posted by Sarah @ 07/06/2003 12:04 PM PST

Here it is after Noon in Oakland CA and it's still overcast and quite coolish.

BK: The flies. Let's think about this. Flies are attracted to carrion, among other things. Is there ANY possibility that the flies may be being attracted by the carcasses of dead bees?

Also, Bk: I watched "Mulholland Drive" last night. My reaction it is is "Huh?!"

Here is this perfectly fine little mystery moving along which suddenly dissolves into a tale of strident lesbian angst and fantasies on identities. Poor Robert Forster never had a prayer of being meaningful. The entire film, as hypnotic as it is, is one of the great wastes of celluloid. It's a film few will invest time in again.

Now...enlighten me as to how wrong my original perception is and illuminate me as to what the frell this film is about.

That said, I have "The World of Henry Orient" to look forward to today!

I wonder what audience TEA AT FIVE was going for. Fans of Kate Mulgrew will not recognize the “Ryan’s Hope”/”Star Trek” star under the makeup, and fans of Katharine Hepburn will know every story strung together with no real sense of order in this two act monologue. Mulgrew is excellent as the 1938 Hepburn of Act One, less so as the 1983 Hepburn of Act Two wearing more blue eye shadow and bright red lipstick than the real Hepburn ever wore off-stage. Still she definitely gets the essence of the young Hepburn and if one could get past the make-up, the older one as well. In Act One she is waiting to hear if she got the role of Scarlet in GTTW and tells all the oft-told stories of her stage career and her family (except for her brother’s suicide which is saved for Act Two) and it ends when a messenger delivers her the script for THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. Act Two recounts tales of COCO, her neighbor Stephen Sondheim, and of course Spence. Now I am not an expert on Ms. Hepburn. I have only read two books (her memoirs and the Kanin “Tracy and Hepburn”) but Ray and I knew every story she told. Surely between her birth and 1983 there were other, less familiar stories that could have added something new to the evening. I thought with the sad passing of Miss Hepburn last week the theatre would be mobbed, but it was not. This is hardly the kind of final tribute to the great lady one would want to see.

Today's Broadway Radio Show will be up shortly....it's a wonderful interview I did yesterday with the talented Ilene Graff (best known for Broadway's I Love My Wife and TVs Mr. Belvedere)....we chat about her stage and TV work (she was also in South Pacific with Glenn Close!) and listen to tracks from her new CD of Broadway Lullabies for Babies....we will start the encore shows next weekend; so, keep those votes coming!

I was in the eighth grade but in the high school band when THE MUSIC MAN came out, and the manager of the theater offered the band free admission if we would stand in front of the theater and play selections from THE MUSIC MAN which the band had used in concert the previous year. Worked like a charm, drew a BIG crowd, and I got to see it in all its widescreen (Technirama) glory. Was always disappointed that my favorite song, "My White Knight," was replaced in the film by "Being in Love." Is that because Frank Loesser supposedly wrote the parts of "Knight" that were replaced by "Being in Love"? I've always wondered.

My gosh, bk, when you say "time flies," you mean it literally!

Tonight??? The chat's tonight??? Oh, my! Oh, my! It is not my wont to be errant and truant, or even truant and errant, but I shant be home tonight before the chat is surely to be half over, or more. I promise I'll pop in as soon as I'm able. I hope I won't be too late!

Just got in from my 6 mile walk, it was quite exhillerating, I did it in an hour and 40 minutes. Jose, I want you to MD a show out here so you can bake for opening night. OR I should take your lead and bake for my casts. I should be at the chat tonight, I'm making the rest of the day quite lazy, so a chat would be scrumptious. (with perhaps a viewing of Legally Blond 2 later in the evening) See you soon.

Posted by Matthew @ 07/06/2003 02:37 PM PST

Too early for me to have any meaningful dialogue with anyone. Thought I should post in case I am too late on my return from whatever the day brings. Have a good day everyone and a sparkling chat.

What is this, the 4th of July weekend? Where in tarnation IS everyone? This simply will NOT do, do you hear me? Fifteen posts and it's almost four o'clock in Los Angeles? How ever will we become the most popular site on all the Internet when there are so many who are errant and truant. Do NOT make me get out the bitch-slap device, oh no, do not make me get it out.

On a happier note (Ab) I just had a lovely conversation with our very own Juliana A. Hansen who has arrived at the first stop of the Millie tour. She will be writing lots of new journal entries, and a new one will be up tomorrow.

Re: updating the Music Man

I think people like to see shows done with current actors.

Isn't that the same reason why we keep getting revivals on Broadway (other than the fact that the titles themselves sell tickets). People like to see the great performers of today playing the great parts (although obviously for theatre, you do not have the choice of seeing the orignals).

Posted by Jennifer @ 07/06/2003 03:44 PM PST

Well, whoever considers herself Errant and Truant or else Truant and Errant must needs be in competetion with me, who am (is?) the champion of Errant and Truant and also of Truant and Errant of late.

Our 4th weekend, as I posted earlier, was subdued. We did catch the NYC and DC fireworks shows on the telly. We really watch them for the fireworks, but they are on television, so they must thrust performers at us will we, nill we.

What a difference! D.C. had Barry Bostwick (wise, since most of the country prefers him as President to Geodubya), Earl Scruggs, and the immortal Dolly Parton dressed in red, white, and blue, singing "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". Appropriate. Miss Parton recently said in and interview, when asked about her looks, "as long as there's plastic surgeons, I'm gonna look like a cheap whore." Such a sweetheart!

On the other hand, Macy's NYC show insisted on hyping every current blockbuster recording artist and having "guest appearances" by every actor who has a movie opening this week.

On the positive side, it did give us the chance to familiarize ourselves with some pop "artists" whom we only knew by name. But, as with Britney Spears' appearance last year, I fail to see what near-naked ladies doing continuous pelvic thrusts has to do with celebrating our national heritage. Now this was the place to see singers looking like cheap whores.

Positive notes: I was quite pleased with Kelly Whatsit, the American Idol winner--at least with her selection of material. Now if only she would learn to annunciate all the lyrics.

We were also impressed that Justin Timberlake, bucking the apparent trend in performances, seems to have hired an actual choreographer and professional dancers, rather than the usual go-go sluts.

Do I sound like a prude? Well, no. It's just that there is a time and a place for everything.

Oh yes, there was a bit of Kristen Chenoweth and Craig Bierko (from two very different Music Mans. (Music Men?)) That was nice.

Since I know you hate long posts as much as I, my weekend oddessy will continue anon.

Hello, fellow dear readers. I was busy with church this morning, and then I took a nap after I got home.

I slept until noon, then I bought something on eBay, and then I watched M*A*S*H. I have had a very busy day.

I am such a procrastinator. I have been sitting home all day listening to Donald's radio shows on headphones (last week's earlier today then this week's after it switched over). Both are very good. At the same time I had the TV tuned to the DMX cable music station on the show tunes channel. Anyway, the procrastinator part is that next Monday (a week from tomorrow), a friend of mine is going to be visiting from Virginia. He will stay with me for a few days and I haven't started to clean my apartment, which desperately needs it. So, there you have it. But whether I get any cleaning done or not, I do plan on being at tonight's chat.

Well...since there is absolutely nothing to talk about here, I shall give a thing.

My brother has this girlfriend. She's awful. She's incredibly demanding, has told him repeatedly that she doesn't like me, or my other 2 sisters, and would be happier if they never came to my house. She acts sickly sweet around my mother, and the second she thinks my mother isn't looking, makes faces and mouths rude things to my brother about how miserable she is. She is very rude to me, never saying hello, commenting on how I dress (which, compared to her, is nun-like). I have no idea how or why my brother is interested in her, but he is. I don't think I can stand her much longer, but my mom has told me that if I say a thing to her, I'll be in trouble. Any advice, suggestions, etc.?

This is merely a convo topic until the chat, don't feel obligated to reply, :)

Chat in a mere thirty-five minutes - be there or be round.

Posted by bk @ 07/06/2003 05:22 PM PST

Sarah:

Ignore her. Is that difficult? Just rest assured that she will disappear from your brother's life once her rudeness and put-downs turn toward him.

And as for her future life, she is busy creating all that bad karma that she will have to deal with in the future.

You, on the other hand, have much more important things to deal with.

What am I, Ann Landers all of a sudden? Please deposit two-cents in the box on the way out.

Sarah - just an un-solicited thought, while you can't chose your brothers dates, until it affects your brother/sister relationship, you should ride it out. You may want to mention it to him eventually if it gets too much, providing you have a close relationship with him already. If you don't, you can always bitch-slap her if necessary! (oh, did I say that?)

That'll be 5 cents, please.

I dropped into the chat at around 8 p.m.

Maya and Kit_Lo were there and we chatted up a storm. And then BK stopped in...and then Susan and William Orr and Laura and one other person whose name escapes me (and I apologize).

Had a nice time.

There's still a few folks chatting away if anyone wants to stop in.

Sarah - If you happen to have a free evening, you should try to make it out to Middletown to see my show. It's just 10 miles down Route 11 from Winchester.

We opened tonight, and it actually seemed like one of those "second nights" since last night was sooo good. But the response was great, and we were paid some very nice compliments by those in attendance.

And after the party at the theatre, we had a pool party at the lighting designer's house. Wonderful time!

Well, it's very late.. and I'm very tired...

See you all in the morning.. or rather later this morning...
