I avoid "scholarly" DVD commentary like the plague. Nothing entertaining about listening to someone with their dissertation in front of them reciting it in a dull, leaden monotone. A terrific soporific, however; I highly recommend such commentary to people suffering from insomnia.

CD - AMOUR! What a delight. Even the English translation which seemed a little phony in the theatre comes off better on rehearing. And without the cheesy special effects (the man who walked through walls was actually walking through obvious rubber slats) it's easier to concentrate on the music and forget the visual. If this CD doesn't convince regional theatres to do this show, I don't know what will.
DVD and VCR - This weekend will be a Susan Gordon festival - DVD of ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE and VHS of THE FIVE PENNIES (interesting which is available in which format).
Also last night I watched a DVD of 50s classic songs taken from various 50s television shows. In addition to real classics like Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue", Connie Francis's "Who's Sorry Now", The Coasters' "Charlie Brown" et. al. there were a couple of totally camp numbers including Frankie and Annette doing a duet of GYPSY's "All I Need Is The Guy/Girl"! There were also a few period commercials. Did you know that before Florence Henderson had Wessonality she had Oldsmobility?

The amazing Der Brucer and I have made an amazing discovery. Mary Rodgers has written more than one story about the family in Freaky Friday. There are apparently two more books, which definately makes Freaky Friday a series.
Good for Mary Rodgers!
As for my CD player right now, I'm on an Audra McDonald kick, so I'm listening to her solo albums back to back and sometimes skipping to particular tracks just because I feel like it. She's making my ears happy.

SWW: I've read A Billion for Boris, and didn't find it nearly as good as Freaky Friday. Didn't know there was a third one, but also don't feel compelled to seek it out.
Freaky Friday is still one of my favorite kids books. A great concept, well-handled. They're still coming out with film versions of it 30 years later! (Jamie Lee Curtis stars in the upcoming movie.)

Dear esteemed, suave, and wrongly-libated BK,
Ugghh, Yuucckkk, Poohhh, there is nothing worse than what I call "taste bud rape." That is where you have your entire sensory system (buds, brain, nerve cells, anticipation, etc.) all set for a wonderful taste that you know and have had before, and then WHAM, the offending plunderer hits your mouth and tongue, and (to quote a wise and menschly man) you can't do anything except go vomit on the ground.
I'm afraid I have the opposite set of taste buds....if I am ready for a real Pepsi or Coke, and the server brings me Diet by mistake, I'm afraid I get rather dramatic in my reaction. But, if you really do take a huge gulp of what you think is in the glass, it can be yucky to the Nth degree.
Well, I can see that I have no literate or intelligent brain cells working this morning, so I'll go attend to menial chores! Bye all.

Poor bk...Diet Coke with Lemons tastes like a cleaning solution...the only "warped" drink that tastes close to alright is the Vanilla Coke products. That's about it.
In my CD player I have the Thoroughly Modern Millie original cast recording...I love this!
In my DVD player I have Stigmata, which is by far the weirdest movie I've seen in a while. Once I finish I'll comment.
In my VHS player, there is a Sing-Along-Song with Barney tape, because my small cousins are here enjoying themselves.
Well, off to pick up a bit and make money and sing and dance and be gleefull...I suggest this to everyone, quite fun.

It's at least 2 years off which means everything can change by then, but supposedly the Broadway revisal of MAME will have Christine Baranski as Mame, Bebe Neuwirth as Vera and Faith Prince as Agnes.
Also the Encores WONDERFUL TOWN with Donna Murphy and Laura Benanti is supposedly back on schedule for a Broadway run this spring.
Of course since both of these items came from Michael Riedel you have to take them with a grain of salt.

Once when picking up my supply of Diet Pepsi 2-liters, I also encountered the Diet Pepsi w/Lemon. I drank it, but I wasn't happy about it. I doubt that I shall ever buy another one, on purpose.
Bill - where did you get that 50's song DVD? My wallet is open to purchase one as well.
In the DVD - ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN courtesy DR Susan who found it during one of her many appearances at MONSTER SHOWS! Thank you thank you. I had never really known how much difference a ratio could make...but on the original VHS release the boom is visible in a couple of shots. In the WB video release, it is not there. In this DVD-R, the ratio is much tighter and the closeups are much CLOSER!!! And the details on this DVD are much clearer and brighter. I'm not saying the movie is any better, but the picture is.
CD - "The Last Five Years" OC
VHS - "Picture Mommy Dead" although it is now back in the box - I had a Susan Gordon viewing party last week, Bill! Only I was able to include "Tormented" on DVD.

Lulu - what's up with the Carringtons?
Posted by Jrand52 @ 07/11/2003 10:11 AM PST
Jrand: Well, in eps in the 90s or so (that's episode numbers, not the decade of the '90s), you've got yer Fallon having weird headaches and finally running off just before she's supposed to have her second wedding to Jeff; you've got yer Sammy Jo kidnapping hers and Steven's little boy Danny; you've got yer Dominique Devereaux revealing that she's Blake's long-lost half-sister; and much more!
In the eps currently showing on Soapnet (circa '87? I think), you've got yer Kristina (Blake and Krystle's little girl) as the poor little sick girl kidnapped by the mother of the poor little dead girl whose organs were transplanted into Kristina (Mom's got herself into a right state and seems to think Kristina is her deceased daughter Kathy), you've got yer Adam falling victim to the Demon Booze, getting into a back alley fight, being knocked out and rolled, then arrested by the police and thrown in the drunk tank as he lies bleeding in the alley; you've got yer Alexis about to make The Big Business Mistake of a Lifetime.
All told, the earlier episodes are MUCH better.

Picked up a rye bread yesterday. The woman at Richman Bakery asked if I wanted it "mit kimmel." I did. Then she asked if I wanted regular or triple kimmel.
We're very lucky in Toronto. So many ex-New Yorkers claim that they can't find their favorite tastes in their new towns. But the rye bread is excellent here, and so are the bagels. The corned beef and pastrami fall short of Katz's - but they're still pretty good. The lox is superior to New York's. The knishes are appalling.
On the CD: Two On The Aisle.

Jrand---
The DVD is from a company that sells VHS and DVDs of old television shows. I'm at work now, but e-mail me (my name connects to my home e-mail) and I'll send you the name and address so you can write for a catalogue. They have a lot of titles with "music clips" from various periods. Ray is more interested in the 60s and has several of their titles of British 60s music. They also have a lot of old television shows. Probably the rarest title I got from them (which is not in the current catalogue but you can ask if it's still available) was a television special of the Adams/Strouse "It's A Bird, It's A Plane, It's Superman®".
Toronto Dan - You mean you can get BK with Rye Bread?
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 07/11/2003 11:09 AM PST
WEL - not only BK, but triple BK. I should've given the translation: carraway (not Liz).

I am very curious about this reality show that BK is doing...as I am a big fan of many of the reality programs (Big Brother, Amazing Race, Survivor)! I wonder if I get that channel? I must find out.
Anywho...
In my VHS player...DELIVERANCE and LIL ABNER...what a combo! DELIVERANCE I truly detested. I only watched it as I was getting ready to interview one of the cast members for a magazine article. However, LIL ABNER I loved (Thanks to JRand52 who convinced me to watch it)! I am now thinking that Peter Palmer needs to be interviewed! And it was so much fun to see Witchie Poo as Mammy Yokum...not to mention the appearences by Valerie Harper (who I actually missed, but am told by JRand52 that she was in there someplace) and Donna Douglas, and my buddy Gordon Mitchell.
In my CD player: Nothing this whole week!
In my DVD player: More episodes of STINGRAY.
Posted by MBarnum @ 07/11/2003 11:44 AM PST
In my CD player: a mini-CD that I made of the songs that Stephen Sondheim wrote for DICK TRACY: the three Madonna songs ("Sooner or Later", "More" and "What Can You Lose" with Mandy Patinkin), "Live Alone and Like It" by Mel Tormé and "Back In Business" sung by Cheryl Bentyne and Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer and Lorraine Feather. Next up will be "Hallelujah, Baby" with Leslie Uggams (I just got this last weekend).
In my DVD player: "Hey, Mr. Producer" the 2-DVD set that I got from eBay (from Korea, no less).
On my vinyl record player: BK's very own "Together Again" LP original cast recording. I had tried to make a CD copy of it a few weeks ago, but I recorded it with the volume set too high (I wasn't paying attention when I was recording it), so it's all distorted. I'm just now going to re-record it at a lower volume level...and pay attention to what I'm doing.

I am listening to the OSR of Hair (the Special Anniversary Edition). I loved the movie. I am in the minority but I think the film version (even though it was cut up) is a huge improvement over the show. Granted the only production of the show I ever saw was a dreadful bus and truck which played an arena in Saint Paul in, I think, around 1972. I also have the wonderful I Wish It So-Dawn Upshaw and The Show Goes On, the Jones & Schmidt review.
Nothing in the VCR or DVD. We've been burning some CDs so Free to Be is in the CD player along with Please Please Me (the Beatles) and Mamas Big Ones (the best of Cass Elliot).
I am wearing my favorite Blue T-shirt from the Washington DC Zoo. It has a Panda over the left breast. I am also wearing jeans, sneakers and white socks.

I kinda like the lemon tinged Pepsi. But then I like a lot of gimmicky products.
In the CD player: my brand new copy of Guy Haines in "Hanes His Way". Excellent CD; a quick escape from the stress of the world kind of album. My only problem, is that there is no clear picture of Guy anywhere on the CD or the liner notes or anywhere, only of Bruce Kimmel, and we've all seen him before! In fact, now that I think about it, there are no clear pictures of Guy anywhere even on this website! Just this Kimmel guy. I listen to the CD and I sit and I try to imagine what Guy must look like, (kind features, warm eyes), and even though the album is clearly recorded, mixed, and mastered, I still cannot picture Guy's face. Guy, if you are out there reading this, you simply must fire your publicity agent, and get some new head shots done for your fans. And tell Kimmel you can sing more than only five notes pretty good.

Where my CD and VCR are concerned, I'm "battin' zero" (ooo a Gypsy reference). I am READING, however, and in my hot little hands is A TERRIBLE LIAR, a memoir by Hume Cronyn, who just passed away. I recommend it HIGHLY. He was not only an actor but a writer, producer and director. He worked with Hitchcock several times (wait'll you read the part about Lifeboat) as well as George Abbott and George Kaufman. He was born in Canada and his father had epilepsy at a time when they didn't know what it was. Interspersed within the text are some fascinating insights about acting and the acting life and he doesn't stop there. The last chapter he directs to actors and capsulizes what he's learned over the years. Very insightful and instructive. This poem by Christopher Logue he uses more than once:
Come to the edge.
We might fall.
Come to the edge.
It's too high!
COME TO THE EDGE!
So they came
and he pushed
and they flew.
Speaking of books - KATE REMEMBERED, the memoir by A. Scott Berg about Katherine Hepburn is in stores starting today. They had a 20-year late-in-life friendship and Berg promised not to publish anything until after she died.
P.S. Click on my name to go to the Cabaret West website and check out the July performances. A couple of nights ago, I saw PEISHA MCPHEE in her all-Sondheim show. She'll be at Feinstein's at the Cinegrill on the 14th and 21st, in case you'd like to catch it.

How can you not love LI'L ABNER?
Those songs and dances are a riot!
And the dialog is sharp:
Moonbeam: We wants to git modernized.
Girl: Citified.
Donna Douglas: We wants to broaden our ho-rizons.
Mammy: Your ho-rizons are broad enough (looks at Donna Douglas) especially yours.

Donna - A TERRIBLE LIAR completely changed my approach to acting...more than being onstage for years, more than directors yelling and giving line readings, more than any "technique." Hume Cronyn had it right, and he tells you how to do it!

Good afternoon!
I'd say TGIF!, but since my "F" really isn't until tomorrow... However, for those DRs who's "F" is really today, then Enjoy!
All my players are currently empty... Oh, wait! Except for my car CD Player:
Christianne Noll - "A Broadway Love Story", and "The Ira Gershwin Album".
L'il Abner OCR
And the CD of the most recent Richmond Men's Chorus concert - A Salute to Richard Rodgers - I guess they caught the end of the anniversary year. Some fun stuff, but I do miss some of the "women's" songs that Rodgers and company wrote. However, one of the medleys does have a nice joke when they break into "I'm Just A Girl Who Cain't Say No". Talk about pregnant pause!
It's a GLORIOUS day here in Winchester, VA. Not too hot, nice and sunny, and the humidity hasn't settled in yet. Got a nice run in earlier.
OH! And I just found out this afternoon that I'll be in NYC from August 11-15 playing for some auditions. YEAH! More time in the Big Apple! -And I'm definitely hitting that new rice pudding restaurant, as well as going to down the list of the best ice cream places that just appeared in the New York Times. Ice cream in August! Perfect! *I think Chet and Eileen will be on vacation that week.

Ah, Carvel. Delicious soft serve ice cream. I remember it well. And their silly frozen ice cream cakes. And Tom Carvel's god-awful TV commercials. Crimeny--Tom Carvel made Frank Perdue look like he had untold charisma!

The article is very fair and covers the city and the bouroughs - did I spell that correctly? However, I don't recall seeing Carvel on the list. *If you want to read the article, registering for NYTimes.com is free, and only take a second or two. But, if you'd like, I could also e-mail you the article. *The slide show feature is very nice too - all those pictures of ice cream and ice cream sundaes and banana splits! Sooooo goooooodddd!

I registered at nytimes.com a couple of years ago. My spam increased a hundredfold (no exaggeration) very soon after. Coincidence? Maybe. But proceed with caution. (PS: I finally (mostly) fixed the spam problem by ignoring that particular e-mail account until it got too full to hold more mail (with all the spam I was getting, that took one day). Spam bounced back and presumably I was taken off of a lot of lists as a result, and noticed an immediate decrease in traffic).
(did I remember to close off all those interlocking parentheses?)
Posted by Lulu @ 07/11/2003 02:33 PM PST
Hmmm.. Lulu, I've found that it "pays" to read all those small check box options for any web-site that you register with - you just never know how many people and companies could end up with your e-mail address. Personally, I've never had that much spam - and I'm on AOL(!), well at least any that I could relate to NYTimes.com.
*I have a friend who will purposely misspell her name when she requests catalogs, informations, registers with public websites, etc. This way, when she gets mail and/or e-mail with a addressed to a particulat spelling of her name, she can pin-point which company sold her name even when she had indicated not be to be put on any additional lists.

Just call me OCD Lori. We're up to the "w"s today - so: The Wiz, Wizard of Oz, Woody Guthrie's American Song, and Working.
CD player at home: Papermill's "Follies", as hubby is in rehearsal for the same.
DVD player: last night, "Cannibal the Musical" (couldn't make it all the way thru, would have been a funny 1/2 hour but not 1+ 1/2!), tonight, disc 2 of Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone. Has anyone else discovered the joy of Netflix (even if they don't have "First Nudie Musical")?

The mystery of my slow email. Too much information. i have been invited by ex-students I taught in 1978 to a class reunion. I do remember some of these students quite well (the photo and names helped jog a few memories). To go or not to go. That is the question. I don't like large social occasions much but maybe it is significant to the students. I have such a busy social life of course! Not.
At a rate of maybe 100 new students each year, a few thousand students are lost in my memory bank somewhere. 30 years of teaching and it is just a little difficult to remember all those names!

I'm in complete agreement on HAIR, and would love to see all of the deleted material somehow - either via seamless branching, or as truly Special Features on a dvd.
Don't forget to listen for Miss Betty Buckley!
In the dvd player:
NUTS, THE MAIN EVENT, UP THE SANDBOX and WHAT'S UP, DOC? (alternately known as THE BARBRA STREISAND COLLECTION). I'm skimming through the Special Features, though, before I settle in to watching one of them, though, I have already experienced WU,D? on deeveedee earlier this month. I do so love the *contemporary* little promotional films done for UP THE SANDBOX and THE MAIN EVENT.
SAVAGE SAM from Disney, once again, mis-framed (as a lot of their other titles have been) at a full-frame aspect ratio, but, a loveable film, nonetheless.
In the VCR:
Kristen Bjorn's MANWATCHER
In the CD PLAYER:
A four disc celebration of VARESE SARABANDE recordings.
NINE with Antonio Banderas
Lee Lessack's first solo cd.

BK and Dear Readers;
Did you know that the
Rosemary in "Rosemary's

Clooney?
Ira Levin was a good friend of
Jose Ferrer, and visited the
Ferrers quite often when he
was writing his novel...
They lived in a multi-room
apartment in NY City then,
which everyone found quite
eerie.... Rosie was -- again! --
pregnant... and was not very
happy at the time. A pregnancy
which resulted in a
miscarriage...
Rosie mentions all of this in
her 1999 biography....GIRL

We seem to be having a lull.
Posted by td @ 07/11/2003 08:50 PM PST
I'm serious people, go buy the Original Cast Recording or Thoroughly Modern Millie...you west coasters, you have time still, it's only...9:20...Best Buy is open...scamper off, don't be errant and truant (newly added to my vocab, bk, I think you)...run along! Not that this will affect the lull in a positive way, but at least you'll have excuses.

I meant to say "of Thoroughly Modern Millie", not or...just in case you were perplexed or perturbed or any other per- word.

Diet Coke with lemon is a serious abomination. Nearly all of the single can I bought ended up down the sink. Diet Coke with vanilla scares me. These days, I prefer my Diet Coke sans caféine (as the can in front of me says).
In my DVD player: "The Laramie Project"
In my CD player - Act Two of the Swedish "Chess"
In my VCR - "The Body", from season five of "Buffy" (which is, by the way, just about the most convincing evocation of what it feels like the moment you learn a parent has died that I've ever seen in a television series - it also features absolutely stunning performances from Sarah Michelle Gellar and Emma Caulfield).
I have few opinions on ice cream in NYC, but the best ice-cream to be had within many, many miles of where I am now can be found at Greg's on Bloor Street in Toronto. Memorable flavours there include raspberry, banana, lemon meringue, burnt marshmallow and - bizarre as it might sound - grape nut (yes, it's ice cream with grape nuts in it - don't knock it until you've tried it, it's delicious).

Sorry for being errant and truant for most of today--I went to school for an exam, then work, then went with friends to see Pirates of the Carribean, which looks really campy in commercials but is actually a great COMEDY! If this doesn't bring back swashbucklers, I don't know what will...oh, and did I mention that Johnny Depp is utterly amazing?
Jose, we must be on the same wavelength--the last CD I listened to was Christiane Noll's A Broadway Love Story. That woman has the voice of an angel--I would love to see her as Hope in the Urinetown tour.
Listening to the CD made me think just how much BK has enhanced both my musical library and the show music industry in general!
The last DVD I watched was The Truth About Cats and Dogs, which is one of my favorite romantic comedies. I just adore Janeane Garofalo--any anti-glamorgirl with a caustic wit is okay in my book. Why doesn't this woman have her own sitcom?
Re: Mame--you know what I'd like to see? Christine and Bebe switching off on on playing Mame and Vera, like Philip Seymour Hoffman and John C. Reilly did for True West a few seasons back.
Okay, I think that's all for now, hehe.

I think the can says:
sans caféine, right?!
Coca down the sink????
Watch out! that might be
thought of as anti-Ameri can!

Dear Reader Jose:
Well, what's not to like about what's in my vcr? ? ?
Besides, I believe that HHW is one place where we may all be absolutely honest about JUST WHAT IS IN OUR A/V/ Devices . . .

Yes, my Johnny is amazing.

Vanessa, you're the French answer to me---only you can sing and act!

Me, sing?
Oh, merci, I'm flaterred!
But, like you, I'm a good
mystifier.... No sex before
marriage.... Huh, huh!

I understand how you feel about the Diet Coke with lemon, BK. I discovered yesterday that the Coke people have changed the recipe for Cherry Coke. The horror! The horror! (Oh, a Joseph Conrad reference.)
I am quite distraught over this. Name of a dog, I say! Nom d'un chien! (Oh, a Baroness Orczy reference.)
Posted by Sandra @ 07/11/2003 11:07 PM PST
Sandra, just buy a jar of Maraschino cherries and add the juice to your Coke. It's much better than the canned version, anyway.

Well, Hrrmmpphh!! Here it is the joyous start of the day, there are several birds contributing outside (although none of them seem to know any show tunes.....what the hell are they hanging around this house for??!!) and I was all set to read esteemed BK's pearls of wisdom this fair morning. But nooooo, -- well, I hope he is having a good "sleep-in" morning, wrapped safely in the arms of Morpheus....how unseemly yet alluring a thought is that?
Happy Saturday everyone. I am going to try to make a dent on a whole list of little pesky errands that I have to do. Last night DR Kerry and I ventured out to see Legally Blonde 2; it was fun and light and overall enjoyable. However, I had forgotten just why we rarely go to a movie, at a theatre, in a major mall, on a prime-time weekend evening, filled with the unending chatter and babble of little barely pubescent noise machines. Oh, that's right, they are really called children.
Anyway, the film itself was funny and light, and yet had a neat theme about animal rights and humane treatment. I'm once again absolutely fascinated, for some weird reason, by a relatively new young character actress named Jennifer Coolidge. She has a most unusual look and demeanor...it's as if she was the result of a love match between Renee Taylor and Kathy Najimy. A very funny young lady!
