I'm pretty sure today is, in fact, Thursday.

I was about to say how much I'm enjoying Juliana's diary - and how much I look forward to each new entry. My dream of acting started and ended with a high school production of Ondine. But J's wonderful diary at least lets me relish the role of stagedoor Johnny.

It's Thursday? It's not Wednesday? Yesterday wasn't Tuesday? Tomorrow isn't Thursday? Are you people trying to give me the GASLIGHT treatment? So, if today is Thursday then tomorrow is Friday? That's the best news I've had since Wednesday which is now Thursday. What am I, Samuel Beckett all of a sudden.

I think it's obvious that you've been working too hard and it's affecting your ability to determine the exact passing of time.
Can't you sue your employer for emotional duress? :)
Happy Thursday everyone (I am Thursday's Child... which I think effectively makes me "have far to go")

Ohmigosh! I had my doubts about it when I read BK's opening words, but the date is correct and my calendar says the 24th is definitely Thursday...all the way through midnight.
JENNIFER!!! And anyone else who watches Big Brother 4!!!
KER-PlUNK! SLAPDOWN!
Did Jee, Robert and Justin get a major BITCH SLAP last night or what!?
What a show! Poor Michelle. It broke my heart that I derived so much joy that was partially at her expense. It wasn't her ouster that I wanted, but the CRUSHING DEFEAT of the Three Stooges.
And DID YOU SEE THEIR FACES???!!!
Priceless..................

Happy Monday one and all.
I am not much for card games or dice games. So, my gambling was limited to the Lotto games we have in Washington. Unfortunately, since the Native American tribes have asserted their sovereign nation status, we now have slot machines in all of our casinos. I must confess, I love them.
Posted by TCB @ 07/24/2003 09:13 AM PST
The only gambling that I do is when I buy a CD that I haven't heard or heard of. Some have paid off. I really like the musical WINGS written by Jeffrey Lunden and Arthur Perlman. I knew nothing about it, hadn't heard of anyone in the show or the writers. It's a wonderful, bittersweet show. On the flip side, I really hate YOUNGER MAN OLDER WOMAN by ... someone. I have no idea why I bought that CD. I probably got it used and real cheap. That was a gamble that went horribly wrong. Otherwise, I only fantasize about winning the lottery, but I never buy tickets. There you have it.
Posted by George @ 07/24/2003 09:58 AM PST
I've never been the gambling type. I have nothing against cards, when I'm playing solitaire, or dice, when I'm playing Yhatzee, but I don't care for throwing my money around unless I'm in a really good restaurant, and that's not the same thing.
Yesterday was fun. Der Brucer had an appointment with our eye doctor, and the eye doctor was able to squeeze me in as well. So I spent much of the day dialated, looking like one of those lemurs from Madagascar or someplace like that, wide-eyed and optimistic. As a result of that examination, I will soon become one of those people who have two pairs of glasses! I will have my regular pair, which are the sort of bifocals with no line, for both reading and everything else, and a new pair for when I'm working at the computer. Personally, I think this will make life a bit more crowded. Der Brucer has had several pairs of glasses for years, and is in the habit of leaving at least one pair in front of the computer. Now I will also have a pair of glasses sitting in front of the computer. Not only will we have to remember which pair of glasses belongs to whom, but we're going to have that much less open space in front of our much-used computer. The good news is, these glasses won't leave rings on the computer table (like we don't have trouble enough).

Gambling... I play the lottery semi-regularly... basically when I have an extra buck or two, and I happen to be by a 7-11 - usually just MegaMillions/The Big Game... sometimes the Pick 3 or Pick 4... But still, really not that often. I did win $43 dollars one time, AND that was after checking some old tickets... I claimed the money two days before the end of the eligibility period!
I've never been into poker - probably could never hold a "poker face" to save my life - or my winnings. I've only been into a casino two or three times since becoming an adult, and once was at the Harrah's in New Orleans. What fun! I played some slots, and then decided to give the roulette table a try - totally a game of chance, and I wouldn't have to worry about my facial expressions giving away my hand. -Who knew there was a set of manners for a casino, gambling etiquette. I still remember the look on the dealer's face when I tried to give her my money hand to hand... "Put in on the table!". It was fun, and I actually came away $80 ahead of the game. Now if I had just realized that the drinks were free while gambling... Next time.
I still have to make it back to Atlantic City now that I'm legal. My parents would go every now and then when I was younger. My brothers and I would end up spending hours in the hotel arcades playing Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Skee-Ball, Whack-A-Mole, Asteroids, Galaga, etc., while waiting for our parents to come out with the next bucket of quarters for us.
And in meteorological news... It's a simply glorious day here in Winchester, VA. We had the usual storms last night, but now it's in the mid-80s and the humidity is way down. -I also ran more than two miles this morning! -Just one lap shy of three! -Of course, I did finish off the rest of a pint of Edy's Dreamery Peanut Butter Cup Explosion last night, so... :-)

Every two years or so I make a foray to Las Vegas (aka Lost Wages, aka Sin City) and though I don't spend the entire time I am there in a casino, I have been known to frequent the blackjack tables. Though I seldom win or lose very much, I am able to "nurse" a few dollars for a few hours' worth of entertainment.

Everyone at work seems to
think it's Thursday. So, if it's
Thursday then it must be
Thursday. Yay, I get paid
tomorrow, the weekend
begins sooner and I am jiggy
with that.
Do you all think that gambling
and musical theater are not
compatible? For example, I
always sing show tunes whilst
playing the poker slots. I sing
Luck be a Lady, I sing The
Oldest Established when I'm
playing craps, I sing Politics
and Poker when I'm playing
poker.

If this were Wednesday it would be "Ask BK Day" but that was yesterday so it must be Thursday which means tomorrow will be "what's in your CD/DVD" day. Actually Monday is Fun With Music Day; Tuesday is Guest Star Day; Wednesday is Anything Can Happen Day; Thursday is Circus Day; Friday is Talent Roundup Day; Saturday night is the loneliest night of the week; and on Sunday sweet Sunday the funny papers lie and fly around the place.

That Jee -- he's one funny fella! Did you hear that threat he made that they would all pay????? He was responding to the possibility that he might be voted out before HE was ready to leave. I guess he figures his one vote mean a lot.
I want Robert gone. I want to see his face as his name is announced and Erika is sitting there smiling at him with the same kind of smile he had on HIS face last night when he thought the vote was going to be against her.
He's an odious little toad, and he needs to be squashed.

Can't consider myself a serious gambler. On those rare occasions I'm in Vegas, I'll dump my change into the slots for the heck of it, but if I lose more than 20 bucks over a weekend that's my limit. On even rarer occasions, a bunch of us will gather at the Pogue manse for penny-ante poker.
My biggest foray into the world of gambling: Being native Kentuckians transplanted in California, the lovely wife and I throw an annual Kentucky Derby party. There is the proverbial Kentucky Derby pool and the winners can take home a pocket full of bills, but mostly it's an excuse to throw a party.
I do play a cut-throat game of Trivial Pursuit, but never for money...merely gloating rights.
Of course, anyone in this chequered business of show has to be a bit of a gambler, I expect...
Now you'll excuse me, I have to go check today's paper and see if I won the $26 million dollar lotto.
Posted by Charles Pogue @ 07/24/2003 12:11 PM PST
Yes, Ron, Robert needs to go away from the house...he is so painful to look at, and does he have an ego! Man! Sometimes I prefer Jee over Jun, but then sometimes I like Jun better then Jee..they do have a good secret alliance going on though, don't you think! What do you think of Nathan?
Posted by MBarnum @ 07/24/2003 12:20 PM PST
Charles Pogue: What part of Kentucky are you from? (Pardon my dangling participle). I'm from Louisville originally. How long ago did you move to California? So good to see a fellow Kentuckian on this board!
I don't gamble. I don't have any money, therefore I cannot gamble. I've never really understood the idea of spending money in order to make money when the odds of making that money are so astronomically NOT in my favor, so I avoid it. Besides, being an actor in New York (or anywhere else, for that matter) is a gamble enough.
I just got my hair cut, and I must say...its wonderful to be shorn!! No more wig-hair! I feel about 20 degrees cooler than I did an hour ago.
No one has mentioned it yet, but on Playbill.com, they announced that PBS will be airing a retrospective of the best Tony performances from 1967-1986, including Ms. Jennifer Holliday's "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," Mr. Joel Grey's "Willkommen," Jerry Orbach and Co. doing "Lullaby of Broadway," La LuPone, Mandy and Bob doing "A New Argentina," Ms. Lansbury doing "The Worst Pies in London," the cast of CATS doing "Jellicle Cats" and Ms. Betty Buckley singing "Memory," and many, many more exciting numbers. I simply cannot wait. It will air in NYC on Channel 13 on Aug. 10 at 8 PM. They also listed an air-time for Boston. I'm not sure when the rest of the country will get to see it, but it shouldn't be too far off. LA! How excited am I??
Posted by Jason @ 07/24/2003 12:20 PM PST
By the way, if anyone in NYC could possibly tape that Tony show and make a copy for me, I'd be eternally grateful. I'm going to try to tape it, but my VCR is sometimes not cooperative. I'll gladly pay for the tape and shipping should you choose to mail it to me. Thanks so much!!

Ron, bite your tongue. Kermit is a frog, not a toad!
Also, speaking of days of the week, The Manhattan Transfer recorded this cute, little song:
SUNDAY
Written by Miller, Conn, Styne, Kreuger
I'm blue every Monday
Thinking only of Sunday
That's one day when I'm with you
It seems I sigh all day Tuesday
I cry all day Wednesday
Oh my how I long for you
And then comes Thursday, gee it's long it never goes by
Friday makes me feel like I'm gonna die
But after payday it's my fun day
I shine all day Sunday
That's one day when I'm with you
Wanna see you next Sunday!

George: I partially rise corrected! :)
MBarnum: I'm very much anti-Nathan. I've never met anyone that good-looking who wasn't stuck on himself. All those girls surrounding him...and him just sitting there soaking it all in. Has anyone noticed that Nathan gives nothing back? He takes everything anyone wants to hand him, but he's non-reciprocal except for a little cuddling in bed.
The one thing THIS show needs that the last two had is a Bunky or Marcellus. I think we have a closet case on our hands, though!
Maybe more than one.
I am very much looking forward to that Tony retrospective!
My favorite Tony moments -- seen live on TV with my very own eyes -- was Jennifer Holliday's mesmerizing and goosebumb-raising rendition of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going."
WOW! I also remember, from my college years, seeing Barbara Harris do the number from "The Apple Tree" in which she wanted to be, and then became, a movie star!!!
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 07/24/2003 01:31 PM PST
I certainly remember seeing
the first Tony broadcast and
I'm happy they're showing
Cabaret from it. I have all
these things on tape, but in
varying quality. What I do wish
they were showing, and it's
really silly of them not to, given
some of their less-than-stellar
choices, is Turkey Lurkey
Time.
Posted by bk @ 07/24/2003 01:42 PM PST
BK, I love Promises, Promises; but I don't remember Turkey Lurkey Time being that spectacular. What am I forgetting?
Posted by TCB @ 07/24/2003 01:54 PM PST
I don't make a habit of gambling other than buying a scratch-off lotto ticket now and again. Which I always lose. Always. So gambling and I are not friends, and I limit my gambling habits now to watching Guys and Dolls.
I am so excited about the Tony retrospective...I wish I knew exactly when they were going to air it in Virginia.
Oh--and I bought two CD's yesterday...the Gypsy special edition with the previously unreleased tracks and Amour. Haven't listened to Amour yet, but Gypsy sounds magnificent. The bonus tracks were amazing...hearing Merman singing the unused lyrics to Some People and Mr. Goldstone, as well as two cut songs which I really liked, "Mama's Talking Soft" and "Nice She Ain't." They even changed some things from the original cast recording...like in Rose's Turn, they edited it so that Merman has a catch in her voice when she sings "All your life and what does it get you" that is just so affecting. God, I wish I had been alive to see her Rose!
Posted by Maya @ 07/24/2003 02:11 PM PST
Jason: Everything looked great, except...JULIE ANDREWS singing "Send in the Clowns?"
When did she do that show?
Did she sing the song on the Tonys that anyone recalls??
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 07/24/2003 02:18 PM PST
With the Tony Award announcement it seems the ideal time for people to transfer the show to DVD if the qaulity is OK.
And it has been FRIDAY here for eight hours!
It would probably be unseemly for me to gambol and I certainly do not gamble.
Posted by Tom from OZ @ 07/24/2003 02:26 PM PST
DR Ron,
Julie Andrews sang that song
when she was a host of the
Tonys some years ago....
.... and since she can't sing
anymore, i think it's a real nice
touch that they show that
moment!

I've tried looking at the Mountain Lake PBS program guide, but my 'puter keeps crashing on that page.

Fun Trivia Fact that I swear to God I read in a Political Psychology textbook: More than 75% of individual supporters of the Vermont PBS station are Canadian - which is one of the reasons why Mountain Lake is one of the richest PBS stations in the US. The reason: Canadians are less likely to be so-called "free-loaders". We have taxpayer guilt for a country to which we don't pay tax!

I was happy about the Tony retrospective, but DREADFULLY disappointed they aren't featuring the Mary Martin/Robert Preston "Nobody's Perfect" and Barbara Harris' APPLE TREE sequence from the first Tony show, nor are they showing the opening of the TOny show when "I Hope I Get It" from A CHORUS LINE was featured. Hate to sound ungrateful for they're giving us some great things, but Lanbury's "Worst Pies" is lip-synched and not well, either, plus many of us have the entire performance of hers from the show on the video version. I'd rather have things that are rarer.
Looks like they're taking a good many of these segments from the 1971 year of the 25th anniversary show.
Julie's rendition of "Send in the Clowns" is marvelous. Angela Lansbury did a bang-up job with it too one year.
Not a gambler much at all, but the one time I went to Las Vegas, I did enjoy the nickle slots. They seemed to pay off all the time.
Posted by Matt H. @ 07/24/2003 03:19 PM PST
I agree Ron, it is most unseemly for Big Brother not to have a gay man on this season...but who do you think is the closet case? I actually thought it was Nathan myself, for awhile. David? Justin (oh, Lord let it be Justin!).
I don't gamble much either. Once in a blue moon I buy a lottery ticket..and then ususally forget to look to see if it is a winner. I have probably won the lotter on several occasions but I would never know 'cause I so rarely check!

Ron, yes that was too funny what happened to Jee, Robert, and Justin lat night. Michelle is so naive. But of course I wasn't surprised. Cause if you read the CANOE spoiler website, you'd have known how the vote was going to go. I'm glad. I really like Erika. She seems really normal compared to the others.
I didn't think that was too nice of David though, to say he had Michelle's back when he didn't.
Emily, re: our lovely PBS stations. I don't think the August schedule is up yet (on VPT or Plattsburgh). We'll probably have to wait another week to see if we'll get that Tony show. Email me if you find anything out. I emailed you some info the other day. Not sure if you got it.

Oh, I buy lottery tickets pretty regularly. I won't check them for months, and then I'll take a bunch in to see if any of them won. So, I'm not sure if this counts as a favorite, but it is the only one I particiapte in on a regular basis.
My favorite used to be playing cards with DR MusicGuy and winning often. And we played for money (and occasionally a few other things too, but I digress-- a Max Schulman reference). Most of the time it was black jack, gin rummy or my favorite, crazy eights. I later told him of some of my strategies, and the HE started winning. So we quit playing.

LONG POST!
This might be of some interest
to some of us;
Is Superman Coming to Our
Rescue?
Christopher Reeve is going to
make a solidarity visit to Israel
on July 28, the newspaper
Yediot Aharonot reports.
Here's a translation of the
article:
The actor Christopher Reeve
will arrive in Israel on July 28
as the guest of Tourism
Minister Silvan Shalom, the
Hebrew daily Yediot Aharonot
reports. Reeve is coming to
Israel on a solidarity visit that
will be complex and expensive
due to his health condition –
coordinated by Los Angeles
consul, Yuval Rotem.
Reeve asked to come to Israel
as a “good-will ambassador
for one special reason: to
meet people like Elad Wassa,
25, who was injured in May
last year by a suicide bomber
in the Netanya market.
Because of his wound, Wassa
was left paralyzed from the
chest down. Christopher
Reeve received a letter from
Wassa and said that that “The
letter left a deep impression. I
want to meet him.”
“I am very excitedly looking
forward to meeting Superman.
It will be a dream come true.
This visit will bring hope to a
lot of people who like me, are
confined to a wheelchair,” said
Elad yesterday.
He added: “A kind Jewish
person from Los Angeles, Alex
Fishben, is helping us
financially. Last week he
called and said that
Christopher is coming to
Israel, and maybe he will meet
some people who are
confined to wheelchairs
because of terror attacks. I

Elad intends to tell Reeve that
“for me he is a role model. He
brings encouragement to
people who feel as if their
whole world has been
destroyed. I’m one of them.”
The visit will last for five days,
and over the course of his
stay, Reeve will meet with
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
and Foreign Minister Shalom.
He will visit the Western Wall
and the Jewish quarter of
Jerusalem and will meet with
injured IDF veterans.

Watching BOMBSHELL on TCM...Jean Harlow is pretty funny.

What a lull!

Okay, okay, now it is a two hour lull. Is this 15 minute lull rule, a twenty-four hour lull rule, or is there a lull in the lull rule during night time hours?

Hello? Anyone here?
Posted by Susan @ 07/24/2003 10:35 PM PST
I'm still here - oh, a Sondheim reference.

And so am I. But where is everyone else?
Posted by Susan @ 07/24/2003 10:46 PM PST
I am here. I posted first this morning. By the way, I ordered DR Sandra's Christmas present today. The same thing she got last year -- tickets to Plaid Tidings.

I hope that is not meant to be a Christmas surprise DR Laura! OZ is becoming excited. Another month and DR Jose will hit these shores. Must find a camera and film for the required photo of the proposed mini Kimlet get together.
