"IT'S PARTY TIME"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, I think we all better just put on our pointy party hats and colored tights and pantaloons, I think we all better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, I think we’d all better dance the Hora or perhaps even the Hully-Gully because we’ve got a birthday celebration going on here at haineshisway.com. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, we’ve got a birthday celebration going on here at haineshisway.com. And just whose birthday are we celebrating? Why, dear reader Susan’s birthday, that’s whose birthday we’re celebrating. So, beat the drums cause here comes thoroughly birthday Susan now. Let’s all give her a big haineshisway.com birthday wish – on the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY WISH TO SUSAN GORDON!

Well, I’m exhausted already from all the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. Last night I had yet another lively and sparkling supper at Musso and Frank, with Mr. Charles Pogue, his ever-lovin’ Julieanne, and my friend Beth. Going to Musso and Frank on a Saturday night, even with a reservation, is quite different than going to Musso and Frank on a Friday night with a reservation. Despite our eight o’clock reservation we were not seated until eight-thirty. I find that very annoying. But the joint was jumpin’, the joint was packed to the rafters. It was, in fact, so loud in there that we could barely hear each other. Mr. Charles Pogue kept complaining that he could only hear ever other word or so. So, if I said to him, “How is your dinner tonight, Mr. Charles Pogue” what he heard was, “Is tonight Pogue”. Our waiter was quite elderly (most of the waiters at Musso and Frank have been there for over forty years) and because of the noise he could barely hear our orders. Hence, when Mrs. Pogue ordered a J&B on the rocks with a spritz and a twist, she received a J&B on the rocks sans spritz and sans twist. We finally got him to bring the spritz but the twist never arrived. He managed to get the dinner order right. For dessert, Mr. Pogue ordered bread pudding with whipped cream, I ordered rice pudding with whipped cream and Beth ordered Spumoni. The first problem was that our waiter served our dessert to the table next to us. They kindly passed it along to us. However, instead of Mr. Pogue’s bread pudding with whipped cream, he got rice pudding without whipped cream. My rice pudding was without whipped cream. Beth’s Spumoni was fine. I yelled at the waiter to come over (if we hadn’t gotten his attention we never would have seen him again) and I told him to bring some fershluganah whipped cream. Mr. Pogue decided not to make an issue of the mistaken rice pudding. Still and all, we had a lovely and scintillating time, except for the brief moment when a woman at a nearby table spilled water and her cretin of an elderly husband screamed at her for doing so. After dinner we retired to the Pogue’s lovely home in the hills for some further scintillating conversation. We met the Pogue’s dog, Cully, and the Pogue’s cat, whose name I can’t remember. Cully was adorable, and very friendly. Cully loves to eat, and apparently will eat anything. Cully was eating a wine cork when we arrived, and whilst we we touring the house, Cully went into Beth’s purse and ate a package of gum.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because we’ve got some more partying to do and I must hit the road, Jack, and then come back for our Unseemly Live Chat.

Has anyone noticed how long these fershluganah notes are for a Sunday? I must now cut them short and get them posted, posthaste.

Don’t forget, tonight is our Unseemly Live Chat at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time and I’d like to see as many Hainsies/Kimlets there as possible because we will be celebrating dear reader Susan’s actual birthday, along with having a lively and sparkling time discussing the matters of the day. Be there or be round.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must do a bit of work on the new CD, I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs, and I must be at our Live Chat. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you get to discuss any topic your collective hearts desire. So, post away, my pretties, lots of topics, and I’ll be checking in often to offer my thoughts on whatever topics are being discussed.

Happy birthday Susan!

and a happy Sunday (or is it Saturday? or perhaps Monday?) to everyone else!

Posted by Emily @ 07/27/2003 10:32 AM PST

Good morning! Good afternoon! -Pick your time zone.

Well... As promised in my late post, here's my story from last night...

Since it was Saturday yesterday, I had planned to drive back home to Richmond from Winchester after the evening show like I usually do. Well, I had about a 1/4 of a tank left of gas, but had decided early on just to go ahead and stop half-way and get gas then rather than fill-up before I left Winchester. -Truth be told, there's a nice, large Sheetz gas station, and they have great cookies! (Really they do - and the frosted brownies aren't bad either.) So, I made my stop and continued on my way home. Once I got into Richmond, I had toyed with the idea of getting off of the highway a few exits early and driving through one of my old neighborhoods. But after thinking about it, I decided not to, and just go my usual way.

Well, once I got about mile from my house, I noticed someone walking on the sidewalk - well, stumbling was more like it. He looked familiar, and thought it was a friend of mine. So, I circled the block, and sure enough it was my friend - albeit three - or four or five - sheets to the wind. He had just left the bar which was on the block, and was getting some much needed air. So I ended up bringing him home - luckily, he did not drive himself that night. I got him back safe and sound - although, he did want a Taquito from 7-11, but the one we stopped at had no hot food out when we got there.

So I just kept thinking how coincidental it all was. All the "what ifs" started popping into my head. What if I had filled up in Winchester before leaving? What if I had taken the other exit? What if I had left earlier - or later? Basically, it was kind of "cool" being able to help my friend out - when he needed help. And it really was totally by chance.

Kind of neat, huh?

Well...-Heck, it's free-for-all day...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUSAN!!!!!

A Very Happy Birthday, dear Susan!

Posted by TCB @ 07/27/2003 10:41 AM PST

Just for the sake of conversation:

I feel very sorry for Liza. How very sad that her life has ended up this way. I remember her on one of the talk shows, not long after her mother died, and she said that as much as she loved her mother, she was also so traumatized by her mother's life, that she would never follow that route. And now, her she is, her mother reincarnated. There have been moments of brilliance in her career (Cabaret, Liza with a Z, The Sterile Cuckoo) and yet, she may end up being remembered as much for her tumultuous personal life as for her giant talent.

Posted by TCB @ 07/27/2003 10:52 AM PST

God, I made it sound like she died, instead of just separated. Still, I have been thinking about her since yesterday, andI feel badly for her.

Happy Birthday, Susan!

There are no coincidences, Jose! What a great story.

Well it was almost like being at Frank and Musso's. I have never been there and probably never will be, but it was like being there. I hope Cully survives the chewing gum.

I am going to watch the documentary on the DVD of A NIGHT TO REMEMBER. I like that movie...not as much as I like TITANIC (1953, coming soon to DVD), but it is pretty good.

Does anyone else have a favorite movie based on a real historical event?

Posted by Jrand52 @ 07/27/2003 10:54 AM PST

I hear you, TCB. She needs a really good movie role.

Jrand - Does JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH count as a real historical event?

Just returned from E&Tdom to say: Happy Birthday Susan!

I'm still getting Groundhog Day re HHW at work - why IS it that every day is 27 June? - so can't post from there.

Re David and Liza - there was a programme here in the UK just last week when they were being interviewed by Ruby Wax (obviously filmed a few weeks ago) and they made out they were so much in lurve. They went to Harrods and he bought her a necklace costing £18,000 (in dollars that's about ... erm .... oh, work it out yourself) because he was so much in love with her. Right!

Posted by Allan @ 07/27/2003 11:07 AM PST

I'm home!!! And it's so wonderful, I've eaten real food, and once this is done, I'm going to sleep in a real bed as well!

Camp was fantastic, well worth the money and poor housing and bad food and lack of air conditioning. I made fabulous friends and improved a lot vocally. I could babble for ages so I'll just say that Deen Entsminger is tres tres cool.

And with that, I'm going to sleep.

Happy Birthday, Dear Reader Susan! Hope you do something very fun and special for yourself today.

Actually, I think Liza kicking Gest to the curb is a sign that she may be coming to her senses. Although the odds are that she'll find another control freak to alternately rely upon and rebel against before the year is out...

Happy Birthday to our Shiny Penny!

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 07/27/2003 11:55 AM PST

Of course it does, TCB....I was right there too!

Posted by Jrand52 @ 07/27/2003 12:08 PM PST

CAMP is every bit as good as I hoped. Tower was already sold out on the soundtrack so I'll get it elsewhere. Yes some of it is cliche and/or stereotype, but it works. The musical numbers are great (and BK you'll get to see a fully staged "Turkey Lurkey Time"). Do not miss this movie and do not leave during the end credits... one of the funniest scenes comes during them and there is another scene at the very end. 2 questions:
If Michael's parents hate him so much who is paying his tuition? And does Sonhheim really have the license plate 4UM ?

To the person who commented on "Pink Lady and Jeff" yesterday, the head writer is Mark Evanier who is a prominent comic book writer today. I guess after PL&J he gave up on television.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GREETINGS, DEAR READER SUSAN!

Posted by Donna @ 07/27/2003 01:18 PM PST

The last time I dined at Musso and Frank's it was many years ago. I was "lucky" enough to find a spot right across the street on Hollywood Boulevard. The orders were right, the food was traditional and satisfying. And there was one odd thing: at about ten o'clock they made some sort of announcement over the public address system. We couldn't hear what it was, and continued our eating and drinking.
When we left the restaurant, I was stunned to see that my car was gone. And so were all the cars on Hollywood Boulevard. Now, when I'd parked, these were perfectly legal spaces, but the LAPD, in their infinite wisdom, had erected temporary no parking signs and towed every car on that main stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. THAT'S what the announcement had been about.
I tried to fight the huge fine and even huger tow charges from my home in New York, but the L.A. court wanted me to present them with photographic evidence of the temporary signs.
It's not really a knock on Musso & Frank's: The food was good and the announcement was made. But I've not returned since.

That Musso and Frank place
sounds to me more like a
night-club than a relaxing
eating place....

Noel, that meal must have
ended being quite expensive...
and it might be useful to know
sign-language to be able to
communicate in such
environment... or have a pad to
write on...

Crazy world...

As much one can't fight City

To the least, one does have a
story to tell!

Posted by François @ 07/27/2003 02:25 PM PST

Ah, yes, the Musso and Franks public address system. In addition to the general high noise level, we had to contend with the publicly announced calls for diners letting them know they're table was available. It sounded like a train station. Despite all the hubbub and food mix-ups, the evening, as is always, with Mr. Kimmel delightful and amusing.

The Cat's name, which Mr. Kimmel forgot, is Mosby, the Grey Ghost, named after a historical figure, Confederate raider , John Mosby, who was known as the Grey Ghost. It was also a short-lived TV series from my youth that starred one Tod Andrews and was called...not surprisingly, The Grey Ghost...It's opening always ended with an announcer saying: "Grey Ghost is what they called him, John Mosby was his name." So we go around saying: "Grey Ghost is what they called him, Cat Mosby was his name."

Happy Birthday, DR Susan.

Nothing spoils a dinner out more than lousy service (for whatever reason). I have infinite respect for food service providers; it's a VERY hard job and often thankless, but speaking as someone on the other side of the menu, it certainly can spoil a delightful evening to have orders constantly messed up. It makes the meal almost tension-filled wondering if you're going to get anything like what you wanted to eat.

I'm glad you had good friends to dine with. The food service itself seems to have left something to be desired.

First of all: Happy Birthday Susan!

Secondly, I hope to be at tonight's chat, but I might not. My computer was infested with viruses (has been for quite a few weeks) and my sister's boyfriend (who built my computer and is my tech support) came over yesterday for about three hours cleaning it up. He will come back (I don't know if it'll be tonight or later in the week) to install a firewall to help prevent any more of this from happening. I do have virus scanning software, but no blocking software…yet. Today (so far) I have had no messages popping up saying that a particular file has a virus. It's been a long time since it's been that way! So, I'm planning on chatting unless my computer is indisposed.

No, there are NO coincidences:

In 1984, I was fortunate to have been selected to travel to Luton, England to an RAF base where Americans in the Air Force are stationed to teach a cleass in basic journalistic techniques. My goals were to take 10 people in high-security area and train them to report on the "doings" of their installation so that stories about them and their families could appear in the base newspaper. The USAF troops and family attached to the high-security area were the largest portion of the U.S. population, but security prevented the base newspaper staff from sending its own people in to cover special events and stories of interest.

I taught for three days, and then took two vacation days before returning to the U.S. I took the train into London and stayed at the Tower Hotel. My goal was to find as many film soundtracks as I could -- and I knew there were many European reissues of long-deleted LPs and I had no source for them in the U.S. at that time (how times have CHANGED).

On my only full day in London, I went out without a plan, but determined I'd find something. I began in Picadilly Circus and found myself moving on to other neighborhoods. As it gets dark early there in winter, the sun was beginning to set at 3:30 p.m. I was tired, had only a found a few things about which I was not excited, but I needed to get back to the hotel, rest and then get some dinner. I knew I was somewhere near the Picadilly tube station, but I was off about a street or two. I paused to look at my street guide, and was looking up and down the street to get my bearings when I spied a sign directly across the street from where I was standing: 58 Dean Street, and under it were words to the effect that they specialized in soundtracks, original casts and specialty recordings.

I sort of floated in, and spent about an hour and a half going through their bins, taking out this and that and the other -- holding new Japanese pressings of such wonderful things as "The Swan" and "The Sound and the Fury" and a stereo issue of "Mutiny on the Bounty" and much, much more.

At the register, I had some twenty albums piled up. When they told me the damage, I pardoned myself to walk next door to an exchange booth to convert travellers checks to pounds.

I knew then as I know now that I was guided by some force to that street and was made to stand still long enough to find THE BEST SHOP IN LONDON (almost a Sondheim reference) for my sort of collector.

58 Dean Street has relocated but it was world famous at that time.

Decided to rent a lot of DVDs last week to catch up on films I haven't seen. Wondered what you think of them.
Gangs of New York - very dissapointing film. No on to root for. Little moments here and there, but not enough for a three hour film.

Laurel Canyon- good little movie. doesn't dig as deep as it should, instead often getting by on Frances McDormands smile.

Nicholas Nickelby - delightful film Jamie Bell is again magnificent after his role in billy Eliot.

Life of David Gale - very distubing movie with one little bit at the end that makes no sense at all and is not mentioned by the diorector in the commentary track. If you want to discuss this further, we would have to include spoilers, but therews no way around it.

I have returned from my weekend errant & truant behavior. We had a great suprise 70th birthday party for my Anthony's uncle in NJ. They decided not to dig a hole in the back yard to roast a pig. I'm so glad. We went swimming and ate good food and had a wonderful time. We spent all day yesterday getting things together for an e-mailing and postal mailing for Anthony's show. He's doing a piece in the NYC Fringe Festival. It opens on August 9 for six performances at some rather wacky times (it being the Fringe and all). He's very excited about it. It sounds like fun.

I'm seeing Avenue Q tonight. It's the new musical show with Sesame Street-like puppets. It had a very successful run off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre and I think it's the second musical to open in the new Broadway season (Roundabout opened Big River, done in collaboration with TheatreDeaf West this past Thursday).

BTW (by the way in Internet lingo), a belated but nonetheless enthusiastic HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUSAN GORDON
