I am currently listening to Donald's replay show and it's quite wonderful, especially the song, If I'm Lucky. I will have to find this CD
Before that I listened to Romance, Romance with the wonderful Scott Bakula. After Donald I will listen to the Lincoln Center Showboat with John Raitt and the glorious Barbara Cook (this is all at work).
In the VCR at home is this past Sunday's silent movie from TCM, The Automobile.
Nothing in the DVD (computer).
I'm wearing my Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx & Central Park Zoo) t-shirt, blue jeans, athletic socks and blue slip-on sneakers. It's a cool, rainy day in NY.

BK, are you sure you're having dinner with the Joneses? I thought it was with us.
Our cd player will be spinning with several different cds over the next few days, as we drive about 900 miles or so. Many of them will be from DR Kerry's collection. It's always nice to have something new to listen to when we drive.

Good morning! -One of the last posters last night, and one of the first ones today...
I haven't had any time to listen and/or watch anything in any of my players this week - just been real busy, and I've spent way too much time in my car commuting various places over the past few days - and still more driving to come over the next few days.
It was fun reading all the posts when I got back from the show last night. 200+!!! We'll see what it's like when I get back from the show tonight. Until then...

In my CD player is THE BEST OF DICK AND DEE DEE...does anyone remember them?? Probably not! LOL!
Nothing in my DVD player this week, but I got a nice package from DeepdiscountDVD.com this week and will be watching the Japanes film GIANTS AND TOYS which is supposed to be a wonderful comedy about the advertising industry in Japan in the 1950s (it was made in 1958). Along with that is the Japanese monster film WAR OF THE MONSTERS starring one giant turtle named Gamera! Rounding that off is a dvd of two, count them, two silent films on one dvd..THE LIFE AND PASSION OF JESUS CHRIST (1905) and FROM THE MANGER TO THE CROSS (1912). How is that for a selection!

Laura - having dinner with the Joneses on Sunday, dinner with you on Saturday - I hope I've got that right.
OM Time - "I win, but not for long." That sounds vaguely threatening to me. Or like Snidely Whiplash twirling his moustache. What are you going to do - get someone for a chat that will REALLY annoy me? Oh, well. And will that make you the "winner"? I'm not engaged in a contest with you or anyone else. You can be the "winner" and we'll just go about our business and soon we will be the most popular site on all the Internet and we shall eat cake and dance the hora and the monkey and that will be that.

Good day, one and all! My, my, we were busy last night, weren't we? I'm sorry I didn't participate last night, but after my dinner with DR Craig, I went home and fell asleep straight away. Its been a long week! (But I dare say not as long as poor Craig's.) I feel asleep around 10:15 or so and woke up this morning at 9. Can you imagine? I feel quite right now and I'm enjoying a blueberry muffin that was waiting for me at work. :-)
'Tis a gloomy, loomy, moist day here in the Big Snapple...a day that is most appropriate for listening to Mr. Mozart's Requiem Mass, which is what is currently in my CD player. Next up will be Ms. Cyndi Lauper's "Twelve Deadly Cyns," otherwise known as her greatest hits album. My goodness, I do seem to have a lot of greatest hits CDs, don't I? Donna Summer, ELO, Olivia Newton John, Barry Manilow, Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi...all of them. Oh, well.
Oh, and DR Jose...FYI: My list is getting shorter and shorter by the day. I'm actually trying to pace myself so that I'll still have things to do by the end of next week. I figured on doing about 15 pages a day, which means today I should end around page 75. I'm already on page 70. I'm surprised that I haven't gone blind yet, no thanks to the teeny tiny print on these pages. There are anywhere from 20-25 accounts on each sheet, and I'm doing 15 sheets a day (on average), so I'm working with 300-375 accounts per day. I think that's not too shabby--AND I'm managing to post several times a day, too! :-)
Tonight I shall be cleaning my apartment because DR Jose will be staying on my couch this Sunday night. I suspect that we may be watching DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES at some point that evening. :-D

CD - The CAMP Soundtrack (featuring only 2 of the movie's Broadway songs and all of the Pop); an English recording of THRILL ME (thanks Alan) the Leopold Loeb musical we are seeing Sunday in what I thought was a world premiere until I discovered it was done a few years ago in England; and the 2 standbys which I keep listening to despite all the other new and not-so-new CDs I should be playing: the OBC of AMOUR and the Soundtrack of 8 WOMEN.
DVD - We just got Season 4 of M*A*S*H but still haven't quite finished Season 2 or watched any of Season 3. Our goal is to be caught up by December when Season 5 is released.
VHS - Nothing. Trio is back to their boring regular schedule after a week of two classic flops ("My Mother the Car" and "Pink Lady and Jeff"), but supposedly they will be having another month of "Brilliant But Cancelled" in September.
Has anyone bought the new "deluxe" 2 disc DVD of CASABLANCA yet? The original DVD has several extras but I'm wondering if the additional extras are worth getting the new version as well.
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 08/01/2003 08:11 AM PST
WEL - from what I hear, the new Casablanca looks even better than the MGM/UA disc (that looked excellent, but it's now a four-year-old transfer) and that there are many more extras than the older DVD. I'll be picking it up and I'll have a full report.

Quite a delirious night it was last
night! My pajamas were not really g-

mess with the thought. I think that
Sarah has a crush on me.
In my CD player:
House of Flowers, the recent
reissue. (Wow, what a score.)
Titanic, the Musical (guilty pleasure)
Wonderful Town (OBC)
The Wild Party, LaChiusa (Another
seriously guilty pleasure)
A Cole Porter disc, which includes
him singing "Anything Goes" and
"You're the Top", definitely the
highlight of the disc.

Hapgood---
I agree that HOUSE OF FLOWERS is a wonderful score, but it is one of those shows that falls into the category of "How could a score that's so good be attached to a book that's so bad?". Even in an abridged version Encores could not save the book and a revised book by Charles Busch was done once or twice and then disappeared.

Greetings, dear readers, and a happy Friday to all!
(Don't I sound chirpy this morning? Enough to make you sick, no doubt.)
In my car CD player:
A two-disc collection of music by Verdi that I received as a "gift" for joining my local public classical music radio station
A Capitol Records compilation of songs by Sammy Cahn
The two-disc soundtrack to the SINATRA mini-series of several years ago
The Best of Roberta Flack
As eclectic as ever, no?

My, my...not even 12 noon EST yet there is already a veritable plethora of posts. A plethora, do you hear?
In my VCR: "Fresno," the 1986 miniseries starring Carol Burnett, Dabney Coleman, Charles Grodin and Teri Garr. "Fresno" is a searing serial drama about the raisin industry, and it sends up Dynasty, Falcon Crest, Dallas, et al.
In my DVD player: Speaking of the MASH season sets, I have been giving serious thought to purchasing season 4, WEL, oh yes I have. I'm not crazy about the early years of MASH with Trapper John and Col. Blake (those are my husband's favorites, darn him!), but I do like the later ones where they're trying less hard to be "zany" and the laugh track doesn't chortle away every 30 seconds.
In my CD player: Les Paul and Mary Ford/Patsy Cline/TV theme songs compilation of my own devising.

The French actress, Marie Trintignant, daughter of actor Jean-Louis Trintignant, has died from a severe beating that she took earlier this week. Her boyfriend, a singer in a popular French rock band, has been arrested in connection with her beating/death. Isn't that awful? How sad...

I had two glazed Krispy Kremes plus one custard-filled Krispy Kreme...yessirreebabalooey, I made a p-i-g "pig" of myself and I don't regret a bite!
Standing by for DVD viewing is the boxed "Captain Scarlett" -- an old favorite. I have, unwatched, Season 4 of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" -- unwatched because I only recently saw all of Season 4 on F/X. But there are treasures I've yet to see on DVD -- "The Apartment," "Some Like it Hot," "Sunset Boulevard," "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie." I watched, this week, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" -- a lot of fun if way too hyperkinetically edited for my taste.
I've got way too many CDs in my CD Carousel to even begin to list them all....they've only been added to over the past few weeks...I guess there are close to 60 loaded in there.

I don't think he really attacked Mr. Prince. If the show is in trouble or needs tightening, then why isn't Mr. Prince there doing what he's been hired to do? I'm probably going to be shot for saying this, but--if the show is bad, then the show's bad. Maybe they'll fix it, maybe they won't, but Mr. Reidel is correct when he says that no one will say anything to stop either Prince or Sondheim from trying to open it on Broadway if they decide that's what they want to do. He's a little rough around the edges...he adds a lot of drama to get people talking (oh, and how they do talk)...but what Mr. Reidel said was legitimate.

"Bounce" is just the newest show
that people want to trounce. The
schaudenfreude on Broadway is
really stunning.
The reviews were not pans. They
were entirely mixed, with some more
negative and some more positive.
None of the ones that I saw were
really pans. And the show is not in
nearly as bad a shape as some may
think. It needs work, of course what
show doesn't?, but there isn't
anything that can't be fixed.
And I saw the show, so I'm not just
being nice because I worship
Sondheim.
And if Riedel soesn't realize that you
can't really know if something works
before it goes on stage, no matter
how long the gestation, and that
small changes often make it work,
then he is an idiot.
It is a shame that "House of Flowers"
can't work. I remember that the
Encores! reception was not too
strong, but I don't remember what
was criticized, exactly. Was it the
improbability of the story? The
performances? The somewhat dated
aspects? Can someone who saw it
enlighten me?

I must admit to being very, very sad that Dave left as he was really the life of the house. The two that I would most like to see leave the house are Alison and Erica and maybe Nathan...just because I am mad because he vetoed Alison. I am very much in the minority, I know, but the stooges are not bad at all IMHO.
I cannot stand Dana or the Stooges (robert, jee and justin). I was thrilled when they got screwed and michelle was voted out. I was mad when Dana sided with them and screwd the alliance (jack, nate, alison, erica, david).
Ok, Ron and Jennifer...who is the one person in the house you would like to see win BB4?
It's too early to tell. But right now i like Erika. I also really like Jack.

Basically when Encores did HOUSE OF FLOWERS it was the book that got trounced, as it has been with every production since the initial one on Broadway in the 50s. A delightful Truman Capote short story (in the same collection as BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S and A CHRISTMAS MEMORY) was blown up and turned from a love story into a competition between two whorehouse owners. Since Capote did his own adaptation he obviously thought he knew what he was doing. The performances were decent... it was a less name-filled cast than Encores usually has but not really a bad cast. When I saw it I felt that the dance numbers went on too long and were too similar to each other, but the music and orchestrations were excellent. It is strange that last season's Encores featured 2 musical comedies I was really looking forward to (HOUSE OF FLOWERS and NO STRINGS) and that were both entertaining but nowhere near Encore's best and one operetta that I might have skipped if I didn't subscribe (THE NEW MOON) which turned out to be one of the best shows in the history of Encores. They have not yet announced the titles for the upcoming season although I have heard a couple of rumors. I would predict that they will not pick a show as a star vehicle for a star who cancels out like they did last year and that with the reception THE NEW MOON got they will probably do another operetta soon... if not in 2004 than in 2005.

In my CD player is the Thoroughly Modern Millie Original Broadway Cast Recording, which is lovely as ever.
In my DVD player, I have Stigmata. This movie is really disturbing.
In my vhs player I have South Pacific, which I shut off out of boredom.
As I type, I'm wearing my Grease cast tee shirt, denim shorts, cushy adidas sandals, and a pink visor. Even though it's raining.
I'm going to see the Sterling Playmaker's production of South Pacific tonight, as a teacher at my school is taking the lead. Should be interesting.

Jennifer: Why surprised? They were the obvious choices to me. One is a turncoat/psychotic and the other is a Judas.
The "Judas" lied to Nathan and Alison about not having gone over to the Stooges even though it was obvious the entire week Dana was HOH.
Both need to go. Robert and Jee are idiots, so there's no point wasting nominations on them at this point in the game.
If it hadn't been Jun, it would have been Justin.

I haven't seen BOUNCE, and probably won't unless it does make it to Broadway. In fact, I didn't even read the reviews, so I don't know if it was panned or not--not that I think its fair to judge a show by the reviews. And I believe that shows can be fixed, and hopefully in the month between Chicago and DC they can do it, but this isn't the first time I've heard of Mr. Prince vacationing from a show when it needed work. I think he should be there in the thick of it right alongside his actors, crew, composer and book-writer.
The thing about Reidel is, he's a columnist. He writes so that people will read his stuff. That's his job. The thing that I find funny is, even though he sometimes gets his facts a little muddled (like saying all the reviews were pans), a lot of what he says is the truth--its just stuff that no one else has the guts to say for fear for people hating them. People have been making desparaging remarks about Andrew Lloyd Webber's cheesy songs, Patti LuPone's horrible temper and waning vocal abilities, Mandy Patinkin's weirdness, Linda Eder and her husband, Michael Crawford's bad choice in material and Frank Wildhorn's pop-heavy scores for years and people will chime right in with their $.02 worth. Talk about Hal Prince, Steve Sondheim, Bernadette Peters or a select few other theatrical demi-gods, though, and next thing you know, you've got a mob of angry villagers at your door with torches and a noose!
I think Reidel is doing a service to the business, if you ask me. He's creating buzz about Broadway again. When's the last time that happened? He picked on 'poor' Bernadette. Why? Because Mr. Reidel took issue with the idea that she was missing a lot of performances at the beginning of the run. What's wrong with being offended by that? People on this very board talked about Nathan and Matthew missing performances, even toward the beginning of their run. Is it that he was pointing out the fact that a major Broadway name was missing a great many performances, or was it the fact that it was Bernadette that pissed people off?
Now he's 'picking' on BOUNCE. Well, if its sub-standard material, then why not say something about it? Maybe someone on the creative staff will take heed of his criticisms and fix it. With any other show, I think people wouldn't care, but because Mssrs. Prince and Sondheim's names are attached, people get very defensive. Apparently Mr. Reidel felt that there was a great big white elephant in the room and he pointed it out.
I take his columns for what they are--a little bit of Broadway gossip. I think its fun.

Isn't it great having the young folks here at HHW, a-fussin' and a-fuedin' and a-crushin' and a-lovin'? Ah, it makes me feel young again...
WEL, I know BK is in an episode of the first-season box set, but since BK himself (IIRC) wrote that the first season of MASH was quite disappointing, I think I can save myself that $30. Yes, I'm cheap, okay? What of it? ;)
Ron: You will absolutely LURVE Captain Scarlet. Actually, all the Gerry and Sylvia Anderson stuff that's been transferred to DVD (that I've seen; which is most of it, from Stingray to Space: 1999) is fabulous. They're wonderfully remastered, both video and audio and bold and crisp and fun fun FUN! Enjoy!

Gleeps (as Trixie Belden would say)! Bad timing.
My "young folks a-fussin' and a-fuedin'" remark was in reference to the Hapgood-Emily-Sarah triangle, not anything related to Sondheim, et al. Jason wiggled in there between Sarah's post and mine, goldarnit!

Yes, Lulu...watch out! I'm a wiggle-worm! :-) I don't think anyone's fussin', anyway...its nothing to get our panties in a collective wad over. Just some good old fashioned theatre gossip.
Now, how come I'm not involved in this whole FLIRTIN' business??
Posted by Jason @ 08/01/2003 11:26 AM PST
Some of what Riedel says about
Bounce, such as the problem with
Prince going on vacation, is
definitely valid. My problem, I guess,
is with his characterization of the
show as substandard. I saw it, and
before the critics did, and I definitely
believe that that is untrue. And if he's
already made the point (and this is
apparently not the first column that
he wrote about it) why make it
again?
I think that Sondheim's demigod
status actually hurts him on this
show, because everyone is
expecting a brilliance that this show
doesn't have. It is a fast, funny
musical comedy, probably
Sondheim's most accessible
Broadway-style show since Merrily
We Roll Along. And that isn't bad.It is
the show that it is.

Some rumors in Ken Mandelbaum's column today:
Roundabout may do MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG and go back to the original concept of a very young (20-25) cast.
Lou Diamond Phillips might replace Antonio Banderas in NINE; Rebecca Luker is being considered for BABE in the PAJAMA GAME revisal; and Cybil Shepard has been offered the role of Dorothy (the Bebe Daniels/Tammy Grimes/Christine Ebersole role) in 42nd STREET. I wonder if the show's producers saw "At Long Last Love"?
However the best news of all is that Karen Ziemba will be returning to Broadway in NEVER GONNA DANCE, the stage version of the Astaire/Rogers film "Swing Time" with additional Kern songs added to fill out the score. Ziemba won't be playing the Ginger Roogers role, (that role has gone to Nancy Lemenager). Karen will be playing the best friend, played in the film by Helen Broderick.

Michael Reidel is a former gossip columnist who somehow got assigned to doing a theatre column twice a week. I think he is also doing a theatre gossip television show in the middle of the night.
He felt that since he was a columnist and not the paper's critic there was nothing wrong in buying a ticket to BOUNCE and publishing his opinion (which was not labeled as a "review" per se).
And the only reason he didn't go after Nathan and Matthew regarding all their missed performences was that it was before he had his own column.
But the thing you have to understand is that his column is in the New York Post the same paper that once had the headline "Headless Body Found in Topless Bar"; the same paper that illustrated a front page story on the gay marriage controversy with a picture of 2 men in kilts; the paper with the infamous "Page 6" gossip column plus both Cindy Adams and Liz Smith. It also sells for only 25¢ while the other New York papers are either 50¢ or $1.00.

Ahh Trixie Belden...I too adored those books as a girl. My cousin Susan had the entire set, and when she outgrew them, I took them and loved them all. I agree, Trixie and Jim should have gotten together, but I was always kinda glad they didn't at that time...'cause relationships that start THAT young never last, and I wanted them to get married and stuff...yeah, I'm a romantic...

The wonderful thing about HHW is that once you have posted an opinion, everyone knows how you feel and you don't have to state it again!
In my DVD player...the Image Disc of LIMELIGHT. Charles Chaplin was a great director, writer, composer, and actor. I love this film...even in its awkward moments. CC had a lot to say about life and the stage and here it is. And lovely lovely music. Claire Bloom. 8-D
In my Cd player DOV and MOBY DICK...thanks so much Jason. It is much appreciated! If you still have a VCR, I would be glad to send you a couple of things you might want to see.... In any case, you could tape over them! LOL
In my VCR....THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH with Miss Betty Hutton and Mr Charlton Heston. It's not what its title claims it to be, but it is fun.

If you're interested in Peter Filichia's opinion of Michael Reidel, I dug up this story from his archives. Remember Peter is the exact oposite of Michael. I've never seen him write anything bad about anyone. Just click on my name.
By the way... I never read any Trixie Belden but as a child I read all the Bobbsie Twins books. There were two sets of twins. The older ones were Nan and Bert and the younger ones were Flossie and Freddie. I really don't remember any details of any specific stories but I know I enjoyed them although they would probably not appeal to the children of today.

Jason, if it's not too late, can I get the pictures too?
In my CD player at work: The Full Monty (original Broadway cast) and up next, an unofficial (I think) live CD by The Manhattan Transfer called "Notes From the Underground."
In my VCR: nothing.
In my DVD player: Sorry Bruce, but I just got the DVD to FAME from the library. I loved this movie when it came out, mainly because they were starting high school the same year that I was...and it was rated R and there was a bit of (sadly, only) female nudity and there was a gay character. And I love the finale song "I Sing the Body Electric." I was one of the best things that I had ever seen (up to that point).

Jrand: You got them already?? That's great! I hope some of you other DRs received your CD(s) today, as well. I'd be happy to view whatever it is you would like to send me. I'm getting a new VCR pretty soon, and my old one still works (other than the weird clicking sound), so please, if you'd like to, send whatever it is you'd like. Thanks!

I have Stingray and Fireball XL5 and have watched most of the episodes of Thunderbirds recently on TV and love them all...Captain Scarlett is the only Gerry Anderson show I recall watching as a kid, and I don't remember if I liked it or not.
Jennifer: I agree that Jack would be a good person to win BB4, I like him, but I just don't care for Erica most of the time. Of my buddies that watch the show they all think I am nuts for liking the stooges too, so you and Ron are not alone in that! LOL!
Posted by MBarnum @ 08/01/2003 01:57 PM PST
I remember the first time I saw the film “The Greatest Show on Earth” when I was a kid. I was getting to the age where I understood the concept of a director as a filmmaker per se. When I went to see the movie I went with certain expectations of what it would be like based on DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments”. As a kid, I was extremely disappointed. It did not have the spectacle or the pagentry that I had envisioned, not just based on earlier DeMille works, but also having actually seen the Ringling Bros. Circus. I have never seen the film since. Perhaps I owe it to myself to watch it again, if only to judge it on it’s own merits, and not on the preconceived notions of an eleven year old boy.
Personally, I prefer “Circus World” any day.

TCB: if Jim were gay, it certainly explains why he wanted to start a residential camp for boys...
I always wondered why Trixie, who obviously had certain feminist leanings, never felt annoyed with the fact that Jim excluded girls and women from his life's mission. It was always a camp for troubled "boys" not troubled "youth".
I will admit though, as far as crushes on ficitious characters go, Mart was the be all and end all for me. He actually seemed slightly less goody-goody than the overly perfect Jim and Brian. He also got to deal with a whole host of problems in his own unique way while the other guys were more like accessories to Trixie and Honey's foibles. Dan had potential also, but his character was too underdeveloped to gain serious fans.
My absolute favorite Trixie Belden has to be the one set on the vacation island (Corbett's? Cobbetts?) with the fabulous yacht racing scenes and the mysterious map.
Wow... that brings back memories of reading with a flashlight under the covers after official "bed time"! :)
Posted by Emily @ 08/01/2003 02:15 PM PST

DR Ben, the John Raitt/Barbara Cook SHOW BOAT is not the Lincoln Center version. That's a Columbia studio cast version which I also think is terrific.
The Lincoln Center SHOW BOAT did star Barbara Cook, but Stephen Douglass was the male lead. William Warfield is also on both CDs as Joe. (The Lincoln Center version is on RCA.) I saw this version of SHOW BOAT at the New York State Theater, and it was magnificent.

Okay if you don't want to know who Alison nominated on Big Brother 4 then don't read any further.
Ron wrote:
Jennifer: Why surprised? They were the obvious choices to me. One is a turncoat/psychotic and the other is a Judas.
Well Dana was an obvious choice to me. But Alison has been saying all week "justin (her ex) and dana" so i assumed that is what she would do.
The "Judas" lied to Nathan and Alison about not having gone over to the Stooges even though it was obvious the entire week Dana was HOH.
I don't know if Jun is a traitor.
I don't remember her telling anyone who she would side with. I'm not sure if you read this. But Jun tried to convince Dana many times to stick with the original alliance and not go with the Stooges.
I know that Jun pretends that she likes Dana. But I don't think she really does. I think Jun would do whatever was best for her. And it wouldn't surprise me if she had voted with the original Alliance.
Both need to go. Robert and Jee are idiots, so there's no point wasting nominations on them at this point in the game.
Um, robert is someone who could cause trouble. But i think Justin was the one who had to go. I know Alison felt betrayed by Dana. But i think that justin is the biggest threat in the game.
If it hadn't been Jun, it would have been Justin.
Yep. The funniest thing is reading about what Justin/Robert/Jee are saying about Dana. Doesn't Dana realize that they never liked her. They are so happy that none of them were nominated. And they don't want to win the veto because they know if they take her off the block, then one of them will go up.

I heard some interesting facts about the making of the film.

Hey Emily: did you decide whether or not to go to Miss Saigon yet? I had a dream about it last night, only it turned into Flower Drum Song (I guess in my dream, i got confused because of Lea Salonga). The Salle Wildred Pelletier is so huge, that in my dream i was sitting so high up that i couldn't see the stage. I had to look through glass, and couldn't see what was going on :)

I just don't like the Stooges at all. I think Jack and Erika are nice and mature and I like that about them. Plus they aren't mean to the others. They don't talk trash behind other people's backs.
I'm not sure which side most people are cheering for. But I just never liked Robert/Jee and Justin. Robert seemed so sleazy. I suppose Justin really isn't such a bad guy. I just didn't like how they were manoeuvring to try to get rid of Erika that one week.

TCB - Click on my name for info on Stephen Douglas. I don't know anything past 1968. It doesn't list a date of death so I assume he is still alive.
A question regarding MISS SAIGON... When the show was supposed to open on Broadway Producer Cameron Mackintosh threatened not to open it without non-Americans Jonathyn Price and Lea Salonga who he claimed were vital to the show. Equity finally relented. While I know a lot of it was for publicity, what I want to know is if they were so "vital" why would anyone want to see it without them? To quote RUTHLESS: If I want to see a helicopter I'll go to the airport.

WELurie: THANKS for linking us to that piece on Riedel. Quite interesting...and funny. Filichia is a fine writer.
So...he's a col-um-nisT, eh!
Jason: I never meant for anyone to think Riedel said those things about Peters. I was responding to the overall tenor of your post about how upset people get when sacred cows get squeezed.
My point: Squeezing is one thing, being utterly vicious is another.
Funny, though, isn't it, now that the Tonys are over and Peters has gotten "well" from the malady that afflicted her, she seems to be doing all her performances, including matinees.
Has Riedel mentioned that, I wonder...?

MBarnum: Dick & DeeDee. You are not alone. I guess the Mountain's still high and the valley's low.I always liked their version of John D Loudermilk's "Thou Shalt Not Steal". Is the Cd on the "Collectibles" label? I should investigate. (They did not ever make the charts here in Australia but had some air play so the Top 40 junkies like myself knew who they were). Maybe Jrand is a closet fan too.
My next Cd compilation (ordered) included such delights as "Elusive Butterfly", "Poetry In Motion" and "Band Of Gold"(Don Cherry). The past is a nice place to visit.

We're still talking about Michael Reidel? For someone that so many people dislike, they sure do spend a lot of time talking about him. ;-) I've yet to see him be utterly vicious. Or, in the case of sacred cows, udder-ly vicious. Then again, I don't read his column everyday because in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter that much.
TCB: I play Mr. Pitman in the opening number and Henry Etches, First-Class Steward, in the rest of the show. I play Ozzy in PIMPERNEL.

BK: Perhaps, then, you're saying that François is free to open discussions about having his children?
Or were you limiting yourself to Maya and Sarah (who has decided to REFORM Hapgood)?
Yes, George, thanks for the ultra lowdown on the J-fleck flick!

Now just a damn minute there, Maya; you, and WEL, and William F Orr are all going to have to all get in line behind me when it comes to the incredible Mr. Barrett.
Posted by TCB @ 08/01/2003 07:38 PM PST
I say we settle all the romantic rivalries by just cuddling together (at least) on BK's couch.
Can Brent Barrett be the special guest?

This is a lively and happenin' place tonight. I almost despair of the weekend lull that inevitably sets in (but who knows?).
It is time I prepare myself for the Friday evening airing of "Big Brother 4" on CBS at 8 p.m., followed by another new "Star Gate:SG-1" on the Sci-Fi Channel at 9 p.m.
Rejoice! For those who don't already know, the soundtrack to "Sweet Charity" will be available soon (later this month).

Trivia: (With what else can I follow DR Ron?).
I am not a fan of "Sweet Charity". I loathed the movie. So what is the trivia?
"The Rhythm Of Life" was a major major hit here in Australia for Diana Ross & the Supremes & The Temptations. I like to share what you all need to know. My favourite version of "Where Am I Going" is of course by the wonderful Dusty Springfield. Maybe td would share that view.

Very special thanks to DR Jason for sending along:

A handmade (by me) CLIFF RICHARD cd featuring THE MILLENIUM PRAYER.
A handmade JENNIFER WARNES cd featuring "Cold Enough to Snow."

The only story I've ever heard about Warner Bros. using Tab Hunter over Stephen Douglass was that Hunter was under contract to Warners at the time and was a box-office name, and none of the stage stars they were recruiting for the film were known for film roles. Hunter was simply box-office insurance in the same way that Doris Day was used instead of Janis Paige for THE PAJAMA GAME, both co-directed by Stanley Donen and George Abbott. In Donen's biography DANCING ON THE CEILING, he does not have nice things to say about Tab Hunter in the film but complains that he was forced to used him. Certainly he doesn't have the wonderful voice that Douglass has, but I don't think he's so terrible. Donen complained that he was no dancer, but I wonder how much dancing Douglass did in the original. I didn't see it, but I suspect he wasn't much of a dancer either. None of the shows he's famous for (YANKEES, 110 IN THE SHADE, SHOW BOAT) required him to do much dancing.

I tried to send Pic. No. 6, but it was returned to me, so I guess they've taken up all your free space. :-\ Sorry...

Went and saw South Pacific today, and thoroughly enjoyed it. While some actors need to brush up on their, erm, acting, the show was done with energy and laughter, so I had a good time.
About this soap opera business. I'm ditching the catfight. I have just remembered that my good friend td can dance like the wind. What more could I want? Unless...Hapgood, can YOU dance like the wind? Because if YOU can dance like the wind, perhaps we should have ourselves a little dance off here at HHW. That would make for excellent soap opera material.
I am completely 100% sick of hearing "Some Enchanted Evening". Never sing it.

Knock knock
Who's there?
Sam & Janet
Sam & Janet who

Someone had to do it!

Yes, it's true! I dance like the wind! But the first person who tries to call me Maria is asking for a knuckle sandwich.

Tom: The Dick and Dee Dee CD is from Varese Vintage (Varese Sarabande). You can get it from Amazon.com. I found mine in a used CD store and picked up it and a Best of Johnny Rivers CD this week!

Tom of Oz -- If you think sitting through the movie "Sweet Charity" is a chore, you should be in a production of the show. THAT is torture.
Posted by TCB @ 08/01/2003 10:23 PM PST
I didn't say it was an exact quote, Ron....most of your words I NEVER used.
Oh yes, Scarlett had it right. A girl only has two sides to her if she sits at a table, but at a picnic....well she can be surrounded.
Mr BK's "Rock Hunter" reference was so funny. Jayne Mansfield was so good in that movie....
Tony Randall: Well of course I will help you handle the Rina Marlowe corporation.
Jayne: But if you do all that, what will I do?
Tony: I'll handle the business functions, but you will be the titular head of the company.
Jayne: *a sound that only she could make*
This program will be brought to you without commercial interruption by StayPut Lipstick....

Thanks DR MBarnum. "Summer Rain" is one of those great nostalgia songs of the 60's. Many of us do remember listening to Sgt Peppers.
TCB: I have always thought that "Charity" is one the most difficult roles to cast. It is so difficult to like her unless you can see "underneath". To make her vulnerable and not a total loser is difficult. Gwen V had that gift I guess.

Big Brother 4 did NOT disappoint. I like watching the aired show even though I know pretty much what has already happened prior to it airing.
Jun DESERVED to be nominated. She cannot keep anything to herself. She spend time with Nathan and Alison and then went and delivered a blow-by-blow report of what transpired to Dana and the 3 Stooges. She's most definitely worth giving the old heave-ho. Alison is right not to trust her...but, in all seriousness, she should have put Justin up against Dana.
That little conversation in which she told Justin that she "thinks" Nathan is gay and then that "there's no way he's not gay" makes me wonder if Alison is just trying to make her boyfriend back home think she's not doing anything sexual with Nathan when they cuddle and squirm under the covers the share EVERY night. If that's not the case, then she's a she-bitch from hell and deserves to have the tables turned on her.
I've got some CDs to log into my database, and then it's off to dreamland.

What a long and busy night at HHW and I slept through most of it. Yes, Dear Readers, you heard it hear first, I went to bed at approximately 6:45PM Eastern Standard Time. I slept all the way through till 5:30AM this morning. Why, you ask? I just started a stint of overtime which means being in the office at 6am every day, including Saturdays, and my poor self just wore out last night. I'm in the office now as I type (7:10AM Saturday morning) regaling in the soap opera, et al.
Tom, I LOVE Miss Leslie Uggams. I would go to Thoroughly Modern Millie again just to see her. She's playing Muzzy right now. I would love to hear her do Once Upon a Time. A beautiful song (done very well also by the lovely and studly Jason Graae on his BK produced Charles Strouse album) done by a wonderful performer, methinks.
Well, it's back to the Ford Foundation and their 3rd Quarter grant list (alas my name is not among the grant recipients so no early retirement for me as of yet).

DR Ben: That might be the encouragement I need to transfer the disc to CD. Let me know if you would like it.

Jason - photos please (my server can handle it)!
To All - hell week for "Music Man" begins tonite, sans our musical director. Apparently when she was hired she advised the Producers that she would be unavailable this weekend. Of course, back then no one knew what a quagmire we would be in right now. We open on Thursday, and most of the company has yet to be costumed. I think the set was finished last night (or poissibly this afternoon). One of the only redeeming qualities of the show is the quartet (which I am pleased to be 1/4 of). Please send good vibes to Long Island - we need it!
