I was E & T (I'm getting the hang of this alphabetese) on the weekend. My brother is here now to help celebrate my mom's upcoming 91st.
Donald: I was so sorry to read about Jack. Like so many other DRs have said, it's such a deep loss - but it's obvious that you gave Jack the greatest gift you could have provided.
I got in on the tail end of yesterday's chat and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was nice to "meet" Susan - whom I had seen in the Five Pennies when it was first released. When I catch my breath I'm going to hunt for my LP of the soundtrack. (Oh the music goes round and round ...)
I'm trying to focus on work, so am drawing a blank on nightmare casting. I have to finish a project by the end of today, since tomorrow I'll be meeting an old college friend at the Albright Knox in Buffalo, which to answer a recent question is my favorite museum. I'll be delighted to tell her that Hapgood gave thumbs up to the Cleveland Museum of Art, because that's where she works.

Sorry I missed chat last evening. I unplugged my brain for the weekend, and then forgot to power up.
My God, BK, what a tough question for a Monday morning!

You couldn't do much worse for A Chorus Line than Richard Attenborough did.
Michael Douglas as Zack? A Landers sister and the wife of Wayne Gretzky as gypsies? What were they thinking?

As Bruce has seemingly abandoned the concept of conducting Trivia
Contests, I have taken up the gauntlet. Herewith, today's question:
Every year, at the Tony Awards, it's orchestra conductor, Elliot Lawrence, shleps out the same music cues to play-on celebrity presenters who have nothing to do with any show that has music. They are specific songs, each from a different musical of the past.
I can think of four, offhand.
If someone comes up with another one, I'll know if it's right.
Name as many as you can, and the shows they come from.
The first one to come up with 4 correct answers wins. If no one comes up with 4 by the end of post-time tomorrow morning, then the one with the most correct answers wins. Looking at a tape of any Tony Awards show is considered cheating.
Post your answers on this site. Not at "ask BK". If Bruce considers this worthy of a Sparkling Prize, he will provide one. I, myself, am not in the Sparkling business.
Good luck, one and all.

I suddenly feel as if I have NEVER seen a Tony braodcast. But I am trying to remember...I seem to think that "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "There Is Nothing Like A Dame" have been played a couple of times...but I could be wrong. Can't think of anymore right now.
The worst casting for a revival of A CHORUS LINE right now might be reuniting those that are left of the original cast and letting them try those songs and dances again. "One Singular Sensation" indeed. When I saw the show for the first time, my experience was somewhat like WEL's with DREAMGIRLS. A Saturday night show, on Broadway, and 5 understudies were on.

Yes, I've read those threads. Finding Nama and Master LcZ are seriously personality deficient -- so much so that they invent fictions to amuse themselves and to get people to respond to them.
They should be ignored, frankly.
Such sad, sad blobs lost in humanity.

soon it will not be dormant, it

Sorry to have missed the chat last night. I was caught up in watching an amusing Rocky Jones Space Ranger DVD called THE MENACE FROM OUTER SPACE! This was my very first Rocky Jones experience...and it was a lot of fun I must say. And I must thank JRand52 for insisting that I watch one!!
As for today's question...I have to sadly admit that I have never seen A CHORUS LINE. But I will throw in my choice of cast being the 135 people running for Governor of California. I am sure that would produce some fine dance numbers!
OK, tis time for some coffee!

How many folks on these pages would be upset if I dissed John Wayne?
Just curious. I've taken issue with the "legend"
on another forum and it has excited some otherwise intelligent people who are full of pronouncements about how films should be made with an eye for accuracy.
Discussion turned toward a new film about the Alamo and someone asked whether it was something "the duke" might be ashamed of.
I found that funny, and said so, citing the duke's film as historically inaccurate and racially risible. I also posed a question about why the duke is so often held up as an "ideal" of American heroism when John Wayne actually opted out (i.e. shunned) war service citing that it would leave his family in dire straits. Wayne, at that time, was one of the wealthiest actors in Hollywood. And no one among his peers who put on the uniform ever saw their families suffer any at all.
The best answer I got was "print the legend" which meant nothing other than "let's all be ostriches."
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 08/18/2003 09:43 AM PST
If we judged how we like
actors based on their personal
lives, I'm afraid the list wouldn't
be long. The Duke was who
he was, like it or hate it.
But, the Duke was a great
movie actor and nothing will
ever detract from the
enjoyment I get watching his
films. I never tire of him,
basically, and can watch The
Searchers over and over again
- also The Quiet Man, The
High and The Mighty, The Man
Who Shot Liberty Valance, Rio
Bravo, Red River, and even his
lesser efforts I find enjoyable.
Posted by bk @ 08/18/2003 09:56 AM PST
Ron - Some good points. I like Wayne's movies, mostly, although as you say THE ALAMO wasn't the historical document it was made out to be....but then, neither was DAVID AND BATHSHEBA.
Certainly the "new" version will be more accurate and have a more balanced point of view - but I think it's just as dangerous to criticise films and even people from the distance of time. We will never have the 1960 point of view again - and Wayne's decision about his war service was something that he had to answer for and live with. If the men who served accepted his reason, I don't think I can do any less. And movies were vital for the war effort.
I don't know what he would think of a "new" version of THE ALAMO, but I think his status as a movie icon is pretty secure no matter what anyone might write or say about him personally - unless he had run off with Eddie Fisher.

Thank you for that mental image, Jrand.
Posted by Lulu @ 08/18/2003 10:01 AM PST
Hehehehe....Jacqueline Kennedy said that to a friend when she was talking about her image in the mid-60's. She happened to mention that people liked her a lot and that anyone who criticized her opened himself up to some strong criticism. Mrs. Kennedy thought that this would continue and that anyone talking against her would look like a rat: "Unless I run off with Eddie Fisher."
Whereupon - Esquire Magazine in their year-end wrap up featured Mrs. Kennedy on a sled going downhill - the sled being driven of course by Mr Eddie Fisher.
And this was a couple of years before JK married Mr Aristotle Onassis and stunned the world.

BK, sad as it may seem, I have yet to see A Chorus Line. Once I have I'll answer.
I love John Wayne for a very pathetic reason. He has the most wonderful voice :). I love his movies just because of his lines haha. Wasn't he in umm...Oh geesh, this movie we used to watch when we were little...Donovan's Reef! I love that movie :)

Trust me, Sarah, Chorus Line is not a movie that you want to willingly seek out. However, anyone involved in theater or who loves musical theater should make a point of seeing some stage production of the show, even if it only a community theater production. Only after you have seen it on stage, should you ever subject yourself to Attenborough's screen vision.

Well, the advance CD of JEEPERS CREEPERS: GREAT SONGS FROM HORROR FILMS arrived earlier today and I've spent the past hour or so positively revelling in its brilliance. Bruce Kimmel and his entire cast and crew have put together a truly magnificent album. There were some cuts I hadn't previously heard, since they were recorded in LA, and they're every bit as dynamic as what we got from the New York sessions. I first mentioned my idea for a "horror's greatest hits" album to Bruce over 10 years ago, so this has been a long time coming. Definitely worth the wait, though!
I'm a happy man . . .

I don't know, BK, I thought the film version was already pretty much of a nightmare. But, if you insist:
Zach ........ Chevy Chase
Cassie ...... Jennifer Beals
Val......... Pamela Anderson
Paul ....... Paul Reubens
Is that better?

My favorite movie in which John Wayne was a star is "The Quiet Man." He did his best "acting" there.
I am also fond of "The Sons of Katie Elder."

A friendly disagreement with DR Jrand52 ("The worst casting for a revival of A CHORUS LINE right now might be reuniting those that are left of the original cast and letting them try those songs and dances again.") I mean, it's probably true for some of the cast, but surely many of them still have "it." I worked with Priscilla Lopez a few years back and she's still terrific.

I've been very very bad. I've

discourse with findingnamo,
oh, yes, I've been having an
unseemly discourse. I know I
shouldn't, I know it's what he
lives for, but I cannot let people
say things that are untrue,
about Juliana or myself. I
know it's his "thing" - I know
he's doing it on purpose, and I
know, above all, that he is a
cretin and not worthy of my
time. But, I couldn't help it. I
have, however, said my final
words to him, and will refrain
from any further responses.
I am so happy Richard likes
the CD. I'm quite fond of it
myself. I wonder if
findingnamo will like it, or
whether, given his anorexia
fixation, he will find it a bit thin.
I can't wait for you all to hear it,

ensemble - including a
spoken solo line from our very
own Scarlet Jason.

My favorite John Wayne movies is "The High and the Mighty" and I am fond of his visit to "I Love Lucy".
I love A CHORUS LINE too much to try and imagine a bad cast. Oh all right - here goes a partial cast. Remember there are mostly very talented people who are just wrong for these roles (with a couple of untalented exceptions you can probably figure for yourself).
Women:
Cassie...Marissa Winakour
Val...Rosie O'Donnell
Diana...Rosie Perez
Shelia...Kristin Chenowitz
Men:
Zach...Harvey Fierstein
Paul...John Leguzamo
Richie...Gary Coleman
Couple:
Al & Kirsten...Ben & J Lo

Oh, God, please make it go away! I can't get these images out of my head!
Casting A Chorus Line is one of my favorite preoccupations. Such personalities.
Sarah, you simply MUST go see the very next stage production that is available to you. It is something that every young actor should experience. Heck, old actors too, for that matter. When I was a child I watched the movie over and over, sang and danced it in my sleep, until I saw the stage version and was blown away. It changed my life. I would do anything on that show, anywhere, anytime: flip periactoi (sp?), play Maggie, sweep the stage, call the light cues, wash the dance belts, anything, you hear me??? ANYTHING!!!
Posted by Joy @ 08/18/2003 11:54 AM PST
DR Panni - I stand corrected. In fact the original choices for the roles might still be the best choices.... The cast album is a favorite of mine, and it must be the performances, it certainly isn't MUCH of the music.
Okay - bad casting for the revival:
Zach - Jack Noseworthy
Cassie - Sarah Jessica Parker
Sheila - Loni Anderson
Bobby - Gale Harold
Diana - Jennifer Lopez
Val - Suzanne Sommers
Greg - Martin Short
Paul - Antonio Banderas

Wow...I have read some truly horrific nightmare casting.
Here's my spin:
Cassie--Roseanne
Zach--Arnold Schwarzenegger
Val--Traci Lords
Diana--Jennifer Lopez (I refuse to call her J. Lo because that implies that I like her)
Paul--Andy Dick
As for John Wayne movies, the only one I have ever seen is Stage Coach. I don't like the guy's politics from what I've read of them, but no one can deny that he had presence.
Sarah--I have no doubt that it's no fun being bit by an ostrich but I got bitten by a goose once. Geese are worse then some women with PMS...nasty, nasty little birds when you piss em off.
Posted by Maya @ 08/18/2003 12:02 PM PST
Zach - Al Pacino
Cassie - can't you just picture Ethel Merman belting "What I Did For Love"
Val - Raquel Welch (she couldn't do any worse than she did in "Victor Victoria")
Paul - Marlon Brando (especially the monologue)
...and the couple who sing "Sing" - Joan Rivers (subbing for Joan Sutherland) and Luciano Pavarotti!!!
Posted by Phil @ 08/18/2003 12:07 PM PST
Hit by an Ostrich would be a
good title of a book. So would
Hit by an Elaine Stritch.
I saw A Chorus Line at a
preview at the Shubert in NY. I
was in town to preview The
First Nudie Musical at a
theater on the east side. I had
an afternoon to kill until the
showing that evening. I was
walking in Shubert Alley and I
ran into a friend, Rick Mason
(Cameron) - we had a nice
chat and then he told me he
was in this new show and
would I like to see the
matinee. Of course, I said
sure, and he arranged house
seats for me.
I tell you true, that the minute
the lights went up I had a lump
in my throat the size of a
football, and it never went
away. I knew nothing of the
show at that point, and it was
an incredible and amazing
thing to see with fresh eyes. I
was a huge Bennett fan and
his choreography in this show
was brilliant. And that cast - a
once in a lifetime thing. I have
seen the show at least fifty
times since, and I always
enjoy it. No one I've seen has
ever equalled the original
performers - even though I've
seen some pretty good
people. The show has been
ripped off so many times in so
many ways that naturally its
freshness has gone away.
But I'm here to tell you it was
one of the greatest theatrical
viewing experiences of my life.

DR Ron Pulliam: I think it's perfectly okay to diss John Wayne's ALAMO...though not on the grounds you're dissing it. Diss it because it is dramatically inert as a movie. Not one of the Duke's better efforts...in no small part, I suspect because he got in over his head as a director.
That said, I don't really think we can diss Duke's war record (or lack thereof), I don't know what his personal feelings or reasons for his choice were. Besides, Duke there were plenty of actors at home, playing the war hero in morale movies...Greg Peck, Errol Flynn, lots of others.
I also find it troubling when people try to assess his abilities as an actor because of his politics.
I think it is just naive and silly to try to denigrate Duke's abilities. He was fine and, at some things, he was better than anybody. THE SEARCHERS & THE QUIET MAN are in my top ten list of all-time great films...and he gives magnificent, subtle, and complex portrayals.
Other fine Wayne performances can be found in STAGECOACH, RED RIVER, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, RIO BRAVO, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and TRUE GRIT. There are lots of others where he is perfectly genial, charismatic, and does solid, yeoman, good work. While I don't think THE SHOOTIST is one of his upper echelon performances, I do think it a nice bow out for him.

I posted at B'Wayworld...I think they
do it for the sake of arguing. Look at
their responses! Its nothing, just
jibber jabber. If they shut up about it,
they'll save themselves a whole lot
of trouble thinking of good
comebacks. Which they don't. I don't
think any of them has made a good
point. especially that whole "the way
yong girls look at it." Let me tell you,
my best friend went through
anorexia last year. I was with her the
whole way, and she's still in
recovery. Anorexics do not eat
salad. Anorexics eat nothing. What
they do eat, they work out
obsessively to lose. They are
constantly sick, fainting, and getting
dizzy. If she can do those dances
and not fall, I think she's fine. I didn't
say this there, because I don't feel
like letting my personal life open to
people I don't like, but that REALLY
pisses me off. Erg.
Posted by Sarah @ 08/18/2003 12:17 PM PST
Oh, by the mane of Aslan. What a bunch o' drama queens! Anorexic? What anorexic do YOU know orders Cobb salads? My goodness, the bacon, the bleu cheese, the dressing, for crying out loud! Those people are insane.
Look, she's 20 years old (right?), she probably has some youngish and not-so-healthy attitudes about food, but who doesn't? Everyone thinks they know everything about nutrition and working out, but the rampant myths and wrongheadedness out there prove them wrong. People should mind their own business when it comes to judging other people's eating and exercise habits.
IF Juliana had an eating disorder, you can bet your broccoli that her fellow cast members -- especially the adults -- would stage an intervention.
Maybe I should post this on there, oui?

A lazy but fun way to do nightmare casting is to simply lift a sitcom cast and insert it into the production. For example, the cast of What's Happenin'?!? starring in ACL. Or the cast of The Love Boat. How frightening are those choices?
My fave John Wayne movie (not that I've seen many) is Stagecoach, which I never tire of viewing.

BK: Sharon Tate was amazingly beatiful. In The Wrecking Crew, she also proved herself a gifted comedian, playing a sexy klutz. She stole that movie from Elke Sommer (okay, not much of a heist), Nancy Kwan (playing Ya-Rang - whose name was delivered with a question mark) and even the underrated Dean Martin.
As for a Chorus Line's nightmare cast, how about lining up a few Dollys: Pearl Bailey as Cassie (The Music and the Mirror, Honey); Martha Raye as Sheila; and Phyllis Diller as Val?

Sadly, most of the people who have eating disorders conceal that very fact from everyone they know. If Juliana actually had a eating disorder, it is doubtful that she would be honest about her eating habits.
What I find far more troubling is the fact that some people can talk so negatively about someone, knowing full-well that the person will be able to read exactly what they have said. What is wrong with people?
Posted by TCB @ 08/18/2003 01:00 PM PST
Tsk-tsk, I think you are all being terribly unfair to poor dear sweet Finding Namo. Bless his heart, he's sincerely concerned with the impact that Juliana writing about what she had to eat for lunch will doubtless have upon scores of innocent young girls nationwide. What on earth is wrong with that? I hope this serves as a lesson to all of you twentysomething young women never to post about what you ate, or the fact that you just got your hair cut, or what you're wearing ("clothing call," BK? For SHAME!), as writing about your appearance will only serve to reinforce the negative idea already thrust upon women by society that their appearance is everything.
I do hope you all will see fit to behave yourselves henceforth, and please do stop impugning the charitable motives and kindly concern of our dear friend Finding Namo.

Dear esteemed, swarthy, and rugged BK --
Thank you so much for your warm post about seeing A Chorus Line for the first time. As you know from visiting with us, Rick Mason was from Phoenix, and moved back here after he retired as a dancer and performer.....at something like the ripe old age of 31! He became like a brother to Kerry and I, and we loved him right up to the point that he passed quietly out of this world. Rick was not only in the original cast, but was part of the smaller group of people that Bennett used for the recorded "workshops" that form the story line of the show. The book is taken from various facts and incidents (often re-mixed and intermingled between characters) that were tape recorded from the peoples actual lives.
Also BK,...it is interesting to me that when we had a "roll call" a couple of days ago, and I specifically asked for names and bio background about people like "OM Time" and "MasterLcZ" , that there wasn't one little murmur of truthful information that came forward.
The people that I admire and enjoy here are just that ...actual real people. They are as much fun to visit with here as they are in person on either the east coast or the west coast.
So, I agree with the tone of what someone mentioned earlier... I think that you, esteemed BK, should just state a factual representation here of who these "hide-behind-the-nickname" persons are; what their names are, what cities they live in, what their occupations are (if they even have any) and ages. There is certainly nothing libelous in truth. And there is nothing that makes a bitter little bottom-feeder or scavenger cringe more than the cool light of openness and honesty.

You know, I was just thinking about the whole food obsession/eating disorders issue, and you know, I think that it's good for Juliana to post her food choices for all the world to see! Being honest about what you eat, with yourself and with others, is a big step toward healthy eating habits. I find that when I write down every single thing I eat every day, I do much, much better with my eating habits. Something about having it right there in front of you makes you understand your patterns better. So post away, Juliana Ashley! Shine the light!

Isn't it possible to make it so that someone has to register here at HHW before they are able to post? Granted, that would mean that Joan Crawford and Arnold Schwartzenegger would no longer be able to post, but it might be worth it in the long run.

I really have to excuse myself from casting a Chorus Line revival. My singing is excruciating, and my dancing the equivalent of a terrorist attack. Any other performer's failings would look like perfection in comparison.
All this talk of the Duke, however, has me flashing on a film I don't think was mentioned in the "How'd a Flick Like This Get a Score This Good" thread from yesterday. The score for Hatari is one of Mancini's best, ranging from the pop of the Baby Elephant Walk to the long and dangerous horns and percussion that accompanied the hunt sequences. Too bad the film itself is such a disjointed mess.

Findingnamo is a sad little loser who has no life and those who echo him need to get a life too. Let him spew his bile, regardless of how untruthful.
The uninformed opinions of unimportant people just do not matter.
He can't hurt Juliana or you. He is transparent. Everyone with a modicum of intelligence can see through his transparent desperate, sad need for attention. What will gnaw his little, miserable, parched soul is being ignored. Don't let him bait you. Just let him and his ilk shrivel up and waft away, vomiting up their empty, ineffectual venom to the uncomprehending air.
When an ant gets in your way, either walk over it...or just step on it, but don't give an ounce more of thought than it deserves.
Does anyone else have the same mental picture of him that I do?A three-hundred pound, sweaty, greasy-haired forty-five year old theatre maven who breathes in laboured, stentorious grunts and lives with his mother, has a dead-end dull job, no friends, and hasn't been laid in fifteen years.

BK - I beat you in seeing A CHORUS LINE. I saw it while it was still at the Public theatre. I had done some work for The New York State Council on the Arts so I used my connections there to get house seats. Carol Channing was also in the audience. I was an emotional wreck at the end (and this still happens no matter how many times I see it). It took me at least an hour to "come down" afterwards and the only time that ever happened before was Judy at the Palace where I reached over the footlights and shook her hand.
And yet as much as I loved ACL, I didn't know if the general public would "get it" and I didn't think it stood much of a chance. I have never been happier to be wrong.
P.S. I also attended the Tony Awards the night ACL won most of the awards.

My apostrophe has a mind of its own. Can't think too much about "A Chorus Line" - even now I am trying to recover from Mr Douglas being cast and the non sensical direction of "At The Ballet" and so much more.
Best thing about John Wayne movies that I can think of: "Green Leaves Of Summer" and the songs from or inspired by "Liberty Valance" and "North To Alaska"

I just got done babysitting the best baby in the whole world! All he did was smile and dance and bounce and growl (yes, they taught their baby how to growl. It's hysterical) at me, I laughed the whole time -when I wasn't reading those stupid BWay posts-. I love babies, they're so happy, it's sad to think that they're going to grow up in a world full of people who are mental.
TCB: Thanks for making me laugh! I hate talking about the anorexia deal because it brings back bad memories, so I was happy to have time with the baby and then come home to more jokes. As I said before, HHW needs more jokes to get us through the day :)
Charles Pouge: I had 2 images of FindingNamo, exactly what you described (although I must say, you had it ALL down, very funny), or some 12 year old computer nerd who has no friends, sits at home and plays computer games all day, has a high shrilly voice, and takes his bitterness out on others, while trying to sound more grown up than he really is. :)
Hmm...I think I'll pop out the funny gross joke from last night. It's crude and somewhat mean, but believe me, I direct it at no one here, I just think we need some more laughs.
Whats the position to make ugly babies?
Ask your parents.

Favorite John Wayne movie: RED RIVER.
Thanks for sharing your moving tribute to A CHORUS LINE, bk. I think I cried through most of the performance the first time I saw it. As a dancer from age 7, I was seeing bits and pieces of my life up on that stage, and it was overwhelming. One of the unforgettable nights in the theater that one cherishes for the rest of his life.
Nightmare casting of ACL: Cassie - Ethel Merman; Richie - Sinbad; Mark - George Burns.

Charles has hit the nail on the head. Ignore it!
Of if you feel the need to respond, just to keep the discussion honest, it is probably best to refrain from comments such as "she's healthier than most of you lot".
I think it is clear that FindingNamo does not have an issue with Juliana (how could he, really?), but he does know how to push BK's buttons. I am not congratulating him for this. I only mean to point out that it appears that Namo writes what he does to get a rise out of BK, and clearly it is working. What makes so many of the DRs so angry, is that sometimes he is actually right.

"No thong, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye ...."
To quote Meredith Willson, instead:
"I flinch, I shy, when the ass with a layer of hair walks by...."
Somehow, "butt cheeks" just wouldn't have worked in that rhyme scheme!

As I said, DAVE, I have
refrained from responding to
his many posts over the last
few weeks. But this particular
diatribe I thought needed a
response. He posted what he
did because he is a
disingenuous idiot. He was
posting this crap long before I
came on the scene. Was he
trying to get a rise out of me
then, Dave? It actually sounds
like you are trying to defend
him and it sounds like you are
implying that he is posting all
this stuff just to get a rise out
of me. Clearly he has issues
with the journal and clearly he
NOW has issues with me
because I actually took the
little wazoo on. But in your
world it's MY fault that he
posts. I get it now. You know,
the way in which you phrase
all this stuff, Dave, why it
almost makes me think that
YOU are FindingNamo, since
you have, on occasion, taken
great delight in "pushing my
buttons". You pushed them
last night in the chat room,
rather obnoxiously in my
opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo).
And aren't you being rather
disingenuous yourself when
you ask who OM Time is? I
think you know very well who
OM Time is, especially as OM
Time has basically stated who
he was.

joke again? Maybe not.
Guy goes into a bar and sits
down. There's a bowl of nuts
on the bar. Guy orders a drink.
All of a sudden he hears, "Hey,
you're lookin' good tonight".
He looks around, can't figure
out who's talking to him. He
takes a sip of his drink and he
hears, "Hey, I really like that
tie." Looks around, can't figure
out who's talking to him.
Takes another drink and he
hears, "Wow, you look great
when you're drinking." He
calls over the bartender and
says, "I know you'll think I'm
crazy, but I keep hearing a
voice talk to me, saying the
nicest things, but I can't figure
out who it is." The bartender
says, "Oh, it's the nuts - they're
complimentary."

Hello DR's. Just a note that I will be quite E & T this week as tomorrow I head down to the County of Orange with my mom, my good friend Sabrina and her daughter Ana. We will be spending time at the magic kingdom and surrounding kingdoms that seem to have no magic but are fun anyway. We will spend a day in Hollywood (but no night in you know where) at Universal Studios and another day prowling around the seedy-ness of Hollywood Blvd and the plastic glamour of Beverly Hills. Sabrina has threatened that she wants to get a star map, I'm so hoping to avoid that. You will all be in my thougts as I do some advertising for HHW with the wearing of the HHW baseball cap and shirt (never together, that's just silly) and the Benjamine Kritzer jersey. We'll see how many people I get to come to the most popular site on the 'net. Cheers.

techniques that I don't fully
understand. But the part I DO
understand is that if it works, I

Sometimes all you can do is laugh.
A man living in Newton, Massachusetts, received a bill on his as-yet-unused credit card stating that he owed $0.00. He threw it away. In April he received another and tossed that one, too. The following month the credit card company sent him a nasty note stating they were going to cancel his card if he didn't send them $0.00.
In retrospect, he probably should have let them do that. Instead he called the company and was informed that (are you ready for this?) the problem was the result of a computer error. They told him they'd take care of it.
The following month he reasoned that, if other charges appeared on the card, then it would put an end to his ridiculous predicament. Besides, they assured him the problem would be resolved. So he presented his card for a purchase. It was declined.
Once again he called. He learned that the credit card had been canceled for lack of payment. They apologized for (here it is again) another computer error and promised they would rectify the situation.
The next day he got a bill for $0.00 stating that payment was now overdue. Assuming that this bill was yet another mistake, he ignored it. But the following month he received yet another bill for $0.00 stating that he had ten days to pay his account in full or the company would take necessary steps to recover the debt.
He gave in. He mailed in a check for $0.00. The computer duly processed it and returned a statement to the effect that his account was paid in full.
A week later, the man's bank called him asking him why he wrote a check for $0.00. He explained the problem at length. The bank replied that the $0.00 check had caused their check processing software to fail. The bank could not now process ANY checks from ANY of their customers that day because the check for $0.00 caused a computer crash.
The following month the man received a letter from the credit card company claiming that his check had bounced, that he still owed $0.00 and, unless payment was sent immediately, they would institute procedures to collect his debt.
This man, who had been considering buying his wife a computer for her birthday, bought her a typewriter instead.
Who said, "To err is human, but to really mess things up it takes a computer..."?

On the subject of Chorus Line: a search. I'm trying to locate Jonathan Penzner who, I believe, stage managed a touring production of that show. Can anyone help?
His father was the actor Robert Penn (Paint Your Wagon; Kean), but when I grew up in the Bronx we knew him as Mr. Penzner. He produced a couple of shows at our temple (the first one was called Famishte (mixed-up) Capers, and I always meant to thank him for the excitement he generated. My audition (I Love Paris) was pathetic, but I wound up painting the scenery and having a ball.
Fast forward to Toronto, where I saw that his son, Jonathan, was in town with Chorus Line. I meant to contact him, but didn't - to let him know how supportive and inclusive Mr. Penzner had been.

The only one I know that I'm getting something back from is our own bk. Whats unnerving is that on the sites, most of the days were in under 2 weeks, or just at that. I'm sure something'll come through eventually.

Sarah...
it might be funny if you put a lot of non-famous people's signatures in with those of the famous. You could include some mutual friends and then, when she goes through them in detail, she'll get a pleasant surprise :)
Posted by Emily @ 08/18/2003 06:09 PM PST
That would be tres magnifique! But let's hope it doesn't come to that, as I gave them 9 full months to respond :). If they can't get it together in that amount of time, I might just take you up on that proposition.
Posted by Sarah @ 08/18/2003 06:10 PM PST
...an even MORE pleasanter suprise that is!

Sarah--what a wonderful birthday gift for your friend! Cheap too...let me see 37 cents for the stamp times forty...hmm...forget it, my math sucks. ;) Anyway, I'm sure you will get other autographs, and even if you don't, your friend will have BK's sig and will really, really appreciate all the effort too!
I have something of an autograph collection...off the top of my head, I have those of Luise Rainer, Joan Fontaine, Helen Hayes and (wouldn't you know it) Sophie Tucker in addition to the celebrities who have signed playbills for me over the years. What are some of the treasured signatures that you DRs have in your collection?
Posted by Maya @ 08/18/2003 06:10 PM PST
Oooh, good idea...I could take some fancy headshots with my black and white camera and have them pose all dramatic and whatnot. I'm def. doing that.
Posted by Sarah @ 08/18/2003 06:11 PM PST
Ah dear Maya, believe you me it was not cheap. Buying envelopes, stamps, airmail stamps for the overseas bunch, new sharpies when I ran out of ink, more paper when I ran out of that...I'm poor, I tell you, poor.
Actually I'm not poor, I'm just frugal. I have plenty of money, I just hate spending it on something thats going to run out or be thrown away, erg.

I think I will watch TMM the movie now. I haven't watched it in awhile and it always makes me laugh.
"Gee I wish my fronts weren't so full!"
DR Mark Rothman - I think you have stumped us. You are giving great clues...but I just don't remember, although I am sure I will when someone gets the answer.
Time for ice cream. So to order the CD we will have to go to the SS site? There will not be a link here at HHW?

Noel - how exciting. Do tell us about the party....I have a CD of an interview that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein gave shortly before Oscar passed away. It is VERY interesting to hear them talk!
Posted by Jrand52 @ 08/18/2003 07:21 PM PST
Sarah, did you remember to include return postage paid envelopes for the celebs to send the autograph back in? That should ensure getting some back!
I used to collect autographs quite regularly throughout the 90s, but haven't done as much lately. I must start doing that again. I have been trying to find some vintage stills or head shots of our esteemed BK and when I do he is going to get a fan letter and autograph request from me! (I have lovely Susan's, which I treasure...along with her father's...hmmm...I think I need to get Flora's too!)

Dear Reader Matthew: Did I miss something? Do you live in LaLaLand?
Dear Reader Ann: Good luck with the consultation tomorrow. I've read that when stutterers sing, they don't stutter. So if things don't work out with the new technology (and I certainly hope they do), you might think about a Plan B in which you live your life as a fully scored opera!
Dear Reader MBarnum: Should you come across any headshots of Guy Haines, that would be a scarce find, indeed. Please do share them with your fellow Hainsies and Kimlets.
Dear BK: I loved your joke.
Now I have joke for everyone. It's the only math joke I know and it's also a Sophie Tucker joke:
When Sophie's boyfriend Ernie reached his 80th birthday, Sophie asked him what he was going to do to celebrate.
"Soph," he replied, "I'm going to marry me a girl of 20."
Sophie pondered this for a moment and responded, "You know what I'm going to do when I turn 80, Ernie?"
"What?"
"I'm going to marry me a boy of 20. And believe you me, 20 goes into 80 a lot more than 80 goes into 20."

Peckish, eh, Jack? Peevish and Peckish and Pokish, doo doo-dum sung to the tune of "Wishin' and Hopin' and Prayin'"!
I'm peckish, too, actually. I've a rump roast in my pressure cooker right now with some taters.

I forgot one of my favorite John Wayne movies - LEGEND OF THE LOST with Sophia Loren and Rossano Brazzi... They are looking for the lost city of gold...kind of like The Lone Ranger only this is in the middle east so it's not the same lost city of gold that Lone Ranger was looking for in the wild west.
Wayne and Loren actually have a great chemistry together.
Matthew don't forget to visit Eddie Brandt's Saturday Matinee...all the movie stills you want! Just be prepared to hunt! MBarnum tells me it's fairly near Universal Studios - where Miss Allison Hayes had her first contract!
Sophie Tucker joke:
Ernie went to the pharmacist to buy some condoms. He said...I am going with a great girl and tonight is the night. Give me a twelve pack. At dinner that night with Sophie and her family, Ernie asked to give the blessing and prayed for more than half an hour. Sophie said, You didn't tell me you were religious. And Ernie replied, You didn't tell me your father was a pharmacist.

There is something going on that I think you, Dear Readers, need to know about. This is not about the site. Bruce has been protecting me for months and months, but I want to tell you that what is going on is about me and someone who is trying to bait me and cause me problems. Please ignore them, and maybe they'll get tired and go away. Bruce has promised me that he will pull any posts which deal with this situation. It would really be helpful if everyone would use their own name for awhile. (Joke posts are fine; we get those). If this stalker continues to forge posts, then Bruce will pull those, too. Thank you, Dear Readers, for your support.

I'll assume that those of you who said you didn't get my joke were referring to the accounting joke and NOT the Sophie Tucker 20 goes into 80 joke. "LIFO" is an accounting term that has to do with the aging of inventory. It's an acronym for "Last In First Out." As I said, it was an accounting joke. With a very limited audience.
I have plenty of other Sophie Tucker jokes that I have no doubt you WOULD get, but this is a family site and I was pushing my luck with the one I've already posted.

I saw A Chorus Line at The Schubert Theater in Century City with the original cast. The standout in the show for me was the dancing of Donna McKechnie. I have never seen any dancer use her arms the way she did. It's hard for me to describe in words, but . . . they absolutely flowed from the center of her body. I can still see her alone on that stage with one leg in demi-plie, the other leg extended, and her arms hanging loosely to her sides. When she raised her arms, it was like they extended from the very center of her torso. The did not appear to be separate appendages. The effect was electric! The most exciting dancing I have ever seen - and something, I believe, you can only experience at a live performance.
There are some dancers (like Savion Glover, for instance) who dance from the waist down. The arms are left to react naturally with no set choreography. Granted that is a style of dance but, to me, it's not very interesting to watch. The attention is so focused on the floor that there is no real communication with the audience. The overall effect (IMO) is flat.
Another Chorus Line memory is my reaction to the character of Zach. I HATED HIS GUTS! All those games he played with everybody's feelings! I wanted to strangle him!

I'm smiling at the thought of Bruce running into Rick Mason in Shubert Alley. A lovely thought of two friends of mine. And seeing Chorus Line affected me the same way. I sat on a bench crying for an hour after the show I had been so moved.
A favorite joke (from Moms Mabley-- and it really helps if you can picture her saying this):
"I was walking down the street with my friend the other day, and she said 'Do you smell hair burning?' And I said 'Maybe I'm walking too fast.'"

I can't believe I'm logging on this late again. I'm not even an Australian.
Speaking of Australians, whenever BK mentions "the Oaks of Sherman," I picture Errol Flynn swinging in on a rope, tipping his green feathered-cap and saying, "Welcome to Sherman, milady!" Is it just me?

DR Matt, thank you for identifying your post. I am relieved that it was only you. Following a previous number of taunting posts towards me, your Den Mother post was a bit discomforting. Would we be able to register our monikers here, this kind of misunderstanding could not happen.
Posted by Susan @ 08/19/2003 04:31 AM PST
Don't thank me. We met at an autograph show in NYC and, consequently, I found this here site soon thereafter. As you were so quick to brand me a 'stalker' and a 'psychotic' for a harmless post, you now have one less fan in the world. BTW, I may have also been responsible for some of the previous posts that you assumed were 'taunting posts'. I was of the impression that goofball posts are the norm for this messageboard (I refer you to your own remark to prove my point - "Joke posts are fine; we get those") I have directed numerous goofy posts at you and a few of the other DRs of this site. It was done in a playful manner but, obviously, there is an undercurrent of paranoia which grips this messageboard. I want no part of it. I have removed this site from my Favorite Places and, unlike 'Ahnold', I won't be back.
Exeunt.

Gosh, I know I'm old, and I haven't been able to attend a chat for weeks now, but I don't know what's going on with this stalker. Suffice to say the "Matt" in some above postings was not I. DR Susan, I hope you know that.
Posted by Matt H. @ 08/19/2003 06:17 AM PST
Just finished a long chat with a DR who is more "in the know" than I am and now have a better understanding of what is going on at this here site.
DM... my post in Yiddish was directed to the person who was posting as 'Den Mother'. I was being humorous - noting my envy of all of the fun that the 'Den Mother' had with Jason and Don. When I posted the Yiddish comment I was not sure that YOU were the ONLY person who posts as 'Den Mother' (apparently, I had missed the Post where that was announced?). I thought that you might be the person who was posting as 'Den Mother' but was uncertain, so my use of Yiddish was my cutesy way of guessing your identity. Your post, yesterday, under your real name in which you said "ditto" left me with the impression that you were NOT 'Den Mother'.
My post in Yiddish wasn't meant as a taunt of you (or of anyone). Maybe something got lost in the translation? Here is my precise meaning (in English):
"It's a shame for all of us H/Ks (di kinder) who missed out on all the fun you had in the Poconos! My ears have heard enough (genug iz genug)!"
Perhaps my command of Yiddish was not strong enough to pull off such a complicated thought? I am neither a 'stalker' nor a 'psychotic'.

Will there really be a morning?
Is there such a thing as day?
Could I see it from the mountains
If I were as tall as they?
Has it feet like water lillies?
Has it feathers like a bird?
Does it come from famous places
Of which I've never heard?
Oh some scholar, oh some sailor
Oh some wise man from the skies
Please to tell this little pilgrim
Where the place called morning lies.

"Matt" - no dear reader "told" you the situation because no dear reader really knows the situation. They only know there's a stalker, and I've been saying that for over six months. I've said it loud and I've said it clear. Furthermore, your explanation of the Yiddish you wrote is hooey. What you wrote is "It's a scandal for the children. Enough is enough." If you don't have a command of Yiddish, and you didn't know that Den Mother was Susan, why did you write it in Yiddish in the first place? Given your other posts, I would have to say that very little of this makes sense. Or, it makes total sense, depending on how you look at it. But, you've said you now "understand" the situation, so that means we should have no more "joke" posts from you under any name, and that the posts you make under the name of "Matt" will be in keeping with the kinds of posts that are made here at HHW. We have two other "Matts" here - MattH and Matthew. Just as when we had a "Jay" in chat long ago, a "Jay" we all thought was our "Jay" only it wasn't our "Jay" it was the psycho. So, we're all a little leery of a lot of things here.
