Good morning. Did I win the quiz? I just stopped typing my answer.

It is summer time - do the other DR's wear their sandals with socks or without socks?
At what grocery stores do we all shop?
Where did Minnie Kritzer buy her groceries? Did she shop at a local store or a supermarket?
I wear socks with sandals, sometimes, and I shop at the Kroger store.
Posted by Jrand52 @ 08/24/2003 09:19 AM PST
I don't wear socks after St. Patrick's Day and before Halloween. Hate the things, I tell you, hate them. I like the White Sox and the Red Sox better than the socks in my sock drawer.
Way back when I was in high school, and often roamed up and down that same stretch of Beverly Drive (I remember when that Cheesecake Factory opened! The cashier at the toy store had the most amazing goiter.) we used to ask each other "Is there a harlot in your sock drawer?" to see if the other person knew what a harlot was. Since then, I've noticed Foot Locker sells these little balls that look like cat toys, but you're supposed to put them in your sock drawer. I assume that they're called harlots.
The advice-to-the-bride song now has a melody, but not much advice
Posted by Noel @ 08/24/2003 09:28 AM PST
Noel: Advice? Don't run.
Jrand: I cant stand socks in the summer. I wear my sandals all summer long. The only time I wear socks with sandals is during Homecoming Week where we have different days to dress up. The only time I like wearing socks is when they're brand new, they're nice and soft.
I buy my groceries at Food Lion or Giant, and Fresh Fields has good muffins, :), like you care.
What is the earliest memory you have? Mine is when I was 3, I was spinning on the carpet in my family room, and I fell and busted my skull open. I remember sitting on a gurney in the hospital in a state of panic, and I remember when they gave me the sleeping drug and said to count back from 100...
Good afternoon to East coasters, BTW :)

For those struggling with the Trivia question, here's a thought. There are only a few long-running successful shows from the 90's, and one in particular that prominently features theatre folk in the cast. Start from there.
I quite enjoyed "The Life of David Gale", though I also was able to predict the ending very early on in the film.
Well, there is yard work to be done. I'm off.

I watched ALL THAT JAZZ last night. I hadn't seen it for at least fifteen years or more. It holds up well. What ever happened to the girl who played "Joe"'s daughter? She was a delight.
BK - I know you have mentioned knowing Leland Palmer who played Gwen ... I mean Audrey in the film. Is she still in the business? What has she done lately?
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 08/24/2003 09:54 AM PST
I did the Dinah Shore and her New Best Friends series with Leland. As I understand it, she's out of the business and teaching somewhere.
Posted by bk @ 08/24/2003 10:28 AM PST
According to Roy Scheider she left the busines after All That Jazz and moved to Israel.

From the Hollywood Bereft of Original Ideas Category:
Rumor has that the once-original Tim Burton will film a remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and that Johnny Depp is the current favorite to fill the role that Gene Wilder made totally unforgettable.
Gosh! Wonder when someone bright will remake "Casablanca" or "Citizen Kane"?
Good morning, all! Just had to rant a little.
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 08/24/2003 11:10 AM PST
A comment on DR Ron's rant about remaking "classic" films (Though I'm not sure I find Willie Wonka a classic myself...and, if you're going to have someone remake it, Tim Burton might be a more interesting choice than a lot I can think of...but is he remaking the muscial version of Dahl's book or going back to the original source?):
John Huston always lamented: "Why do they always remake our 'good' films? Why don't they remake our 'bad' ones?"
Posted by Charles Pogue @ 08/24/2003 11:23 AM PST
Good point, Charles and John H. Here's a question for everyone: If you were going to remake a really bad film, which film would you remake, and what changes would you make to turn it into a good film?
Posted by Susan @ 08/24/2003 11:32 AM PST
Hello Dear Readers!
I just returned from a sleepover, having seen Marci X the night before. I'd read the reviews which were starting to make Gigli look like Gigi but my friends convinced me to see it anyway and I rather enjoyed it despite the one dimensional characters and stereotypes. There were tons of theatre people in the cast...Jane Krakowski, Sherie Renee Scott, Veanne Cox, Christine Baranski, Charles Kimbrough, Matthew Morrison and even Rita Gardner in a small part.
Read all the notes from yesterday...Sarah, am tres impressed with you getting that seven (or should it have been six?) degrees question which I honestly didn't think even had an answer! You go!
As for the questions so far, I wear sandals without socks usually, probably remember the park my mom took me too when I was little as my earliest memory and as for the bad movie remake one...can I get back to you on that?
Posted by Maya @ 08/24/2003 11:48 AM PST
DR Pogue: The story I read said it was an "update" redo. It said Dahl's estate has been reluctant to greenlight anything because Roald was not happy with the musical film starring Wilder (whose portrayal he deemed "Half-baked). However, since Burton did "James the Giant Peach" to the estate's satisfaction, they've relented and let development move forward. While NOTHING has been said about the film being a musical, one of the "hopes" that Warner Brothers is "hoping" is that it will eventually be a Broadway musical a la "The Lion King."
DR Sarah: Now forgive me, but I am sure I am not alone in having had my curiosity (that's curio-u-sity to you, Tom From Oz) piqued (oh! yes! piqued) as to how 3-year-old Sarah responded to the instruction to count backward from 10.
Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 08/24/2003 11:53 AM PST
Bad movies that I would personally like to remake: A Chorus Line, A Chorus Line, and A Chorus Line.
Posted by bk @ 08/24/2003 12:06 PM PST
DR MusicGuy, how long must I wait to know the answer?!
Posted by Susan @ 08/24/2003 12:36 PM PST
DR Ron Pulliam: I was a very smart 3 year old. I might have been 4...but I'm 99.9% sure I was 3. Seriously, I was reading books at age 4...I wish that smart gene had kept up until now, I could use it in Bio and algebra 2...*shudder*
Bad movie I'd like to remake? Are you defining bad movie as badly written or badly made...like an excellent story line, but awful casting, awful scenery, etc...?
There are so many bees in my yard. I HATE bees. I hate all bugs. Anything with more than 4 legs is unnecessary. There was a gigantic spider on my computer last night, and *as Paulie can confess to you* I was freaking out. It was disgusting.
Oh, good question idea, what are you most afraid of? I myself am afraid of giant squid. I know, that sounds really dumb, but the thought of giant squid gives me serious goosebumps. SO scary :)
Your Turn!

I managed to convince not 1, not 2, but 3 people to come see Miss Saigon with me on Wednesday.
So - I won't be able to meet up with DR Jennifer :(
...But I will get to see the show! :)

Oh, dear, this will NOT do. Where in tarnation IS everyone - out enjoying their Sunday? That is NOT acceptable - we must have loads of lovely posts - I mean we have the lovely posts but we don't have the loads. Let's have some loads, shall we? Let's get some postin' goin' on, shall we?
Sarah, when you read Kritzerland, you will know about BEES and fear.
Posted by bk @ 08/24/2003 01:32 PM PST
Does Kritzerland beat stepping on an underground bees nest, being swarmed, getting stung over 100 times and having to go the emergency room?
THAT'S why I hate bees. They're right up there with giant squid.
Posted by Sarah @ 08/24/2003 01:36 PM PST
Well, bk, I'm not in tarnation, but I am in Gold Coast, Australia!
Good morning, all! It's about 6:45AM here - we (finally)start working today. The first two days have been filled with lots of fun, fun, fun - and food, food, food too!
I finally got my notebook configured to work with the high-speed connection in the hotel room, so that's why I'm finally posting. The hotel actually has some coin-operated computer/internet terminals - $2.00AUD for 10 minutes. So...
I need to get my butt cheeks in gear and get some prep work done for today. More later! *And if the timing is right, I may be able to join the chat tonight - I think - that's if I have to day right too - being 14 hours "ahead" takes a little bit of thinking when it comes to dealing with when to call home.
G'day, Mates!

Oh - I just re-did my math - I won't be able to make the chat since I'll be in the middle of the vocal auditions... So...
HI!

I am limited in my grocery excursions. I have one expensive grocery store 4 blocks from my apartment and another one less expensive 10 blocks away. The Food Emporium and Western Beef (even though we're on the east coast). Wherever I go, I still must either use a wheeled cart (a "granny cart" as it has been called by some, no insult intended to grandmothers) or just buy a few things because then I must walk the 4 to 10 blocks back to the apartment and then up 3 flights of stairs (no elevator in my building) so shopping is not a favorite activity of mine.

I know that THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES for sure will be released by Warners in January. It was one of the five movies which won the on-line internet poll of Warners vault titles people wanted to see released on DVD. For the life of me, I can't remember the others. I guess I remember DAYS because it was the only one of the five I chose that was a winner. But if they release it full frame in January, I won't be interested in buying it.

Hey everyone!
I'm not sure where everyone is. But I wasn't sure yesterday either, and when i logged off there were like 36 messages. Yet this morning when i checked there were another 100.
I think in the summer most people just don't stay by their computers on the weekend. I know i don't. Which is probably why I haven't been at any of the chats this summer. I just don't find myself doing the computer thing on summer nights :(
DR Emily: Glad you found some buyers for Miss Saigon. I cannot wait to see it. I'm sort of excited. It has been a while since anything interested has played in Montreal. And it's my brother-in-law's first musical. And he is filapino. So i think he might get a kick out of the whole asian thing (well i sure hope so).
Re: Big Brother 4.
I hate Jee now because of the crap he has pulled which hasn't yet aired on tv. I never liked the Stooge alliance. But I hate that he won HOH. And i hate what he did to make the other houseguests suffer.
It's weird. I never really liked Jun or Ally. But I love Erika. And I really hope that those girls are not lying when they mentioned an all girl's alliance. That would be totally awesome.
And I hope they shock the stooges into thinking Erika is being voted out. Now that would make my day!
:)

td: I loved the connections! All that work from an inane nonsensical question in response to DR Ron's "kit and beans". Perhaps I should have gone with Eartha KITt and "There Will Never BE ANother You". What happens when I ask a sensible question? You are a delight.
Back to the NGDB. There "Mr Bojangles" was IMHO never up to the standard of Jerry Jeff Walker's original. People here in Oz seem to think it was only sung by Sammy Davis Jnr (a version which leaves me cold). Maybe there will be a response to that as a post. I am still waiting for one on Liza's "Losing My Mind" (PSB produced).

Have been E and T all day as I have wondered near and far looking for a partilcar comforter and bed sheets to make my way to green bedroom have some added color. Target had exactly what I wanted but not in full size...so I trotted down to the Target in Albany (30 miles south of Salem) and they had it waiting for me to pick up at the front counter. I love Target items! You know, the very first time I visited North Hollywood California the first thing I did was go to Target! LOL!
I never wear socks with sandals. I generally take my socks off as soon as I hit the front door (when coming home from work). I don't like wearing shoes much either, so if weather permits I flop on my flip flops (not thongs).
I do my daily grocery shopping at Safeway. It is the only grocery store for those of use who live in the Salem downtown area...but I do my major monthy grocery shopping at Winco in the southern part of town.
Ok time to fix some lunch and pop in the Burns and Allen DVD of SIX OF A KIND!
By the way I never did get to watch the tape of NAKED SPACE (starring our great man of many talents, Bruce Kimmel) as the tape I got a Blockbuster was defective!! And couldn't find it at any other video store in town (and believe me I looked). So I bid on a DVD on Ebay!

Okay, Mr. Tomovoz, I'll respond on Liza's "Losing My Mind".
Aaaaaaargh!
I bought the CD for that number alone and have only played it once. Then, when I was tutoring her in math and physics, my Joe's niece Andrea, said, "You said you were into Stephen Sondheim. I heard Liza Minnelli do a song by him and I really liked it."
I played her Barbara Cook's version. I played her Dorothy Collins. I played Dorothy Loudon's take. She said, "I like Liza's better."
That was, of course, before the divoon Dame Edna (or, as her nephew the Crocodile Humper calls her, Auntie Edna) recorded the all-time definitive version at the beheast of our beloved and callipygian BK.

Ok, I guess I needed to post that last post twice! Well the second one is without the errors!! I had started to hit post but thought I had stopped it in time. Then made my corrections...and wham...wouldn't you know the first one posted anyhow!
To answer Susan's questions: I would remake THE ASTOUNDING SHE MONSTER. I would star JLo as the she monster. It would be sort of a biographical film.

Thanks WFO. I only have the 45rpm version of the Liza take on Mind. My first reaction when I heard it was UGHHHHHHHHHHH. It does not seem so bad now but then I am a PSB fan and love their deadpan style. Have you heard the PSB version of "If Love Were All"? When they sang "Always On My Mind" as a sort of musical joke they ended up recording it to satisfy the demands of fans. I suspect nearly all their work in very much "Tongue in cheek" but I loved their work with Dusty Springfield and songs like "Rent" have so much more interest than many (most) other pop songs. I quite like their penned musical as well. (It was probably not good on stage). In Melbourne we currently have the joys of "We Will Rock You" (the Queen musical). And it is doing very very well indeed!

When Warners releases Days of Wine and Roses it will be in its proper ratio. They're consistent about doing that. I'm sure the transfer wasn't done in time for this promotional box, that's all.

Greetings, Dear Readers. I am back from my brief weekend away. I went to the Springs of Palm, where it was very, very, very (that's three verys) hot. Still, I had a nice time. It was pleasant to get away, if only for one night.
Dear Reader Ben: If you have not yet read it, may I urge to read M.F.K. Fisher's "The Gastronomical Me." Ms. Fisher's writings, although ostensibly about food, provide wonderful social history. In "TGM," she describes living in France in the 'thirties, and the challenges she faced in shopping for provisions. She also had to carry water up several flights from a pump in the square outside her pensione. You, at least I hope, have indoor plumbing!

Bill - I saw Erzsebet Foldi on tour in a musical...and now I can't remember which show it was. I did a quick check of some of my old programs and can't locate her - but she working or at least was a few years ago. She was a member of the ensemble - and although I can't find the program, I am pretty sure it was TOMMY.

In less than twelve hours I'm going to have to wake up and go to school...I'm so sad, I'm going to have HHW withdrawals! But hopefuly I can snag a computer somewhere in the school during lunch or something...and I'll come and visit you all and miss you terribly...
I'm hoping we have more participation in chat tonight than we're having here...

I'm here. I have never been to Tarnation, but I remember an episode of the TV show "Fame" where Mrs. Berg was handing out leaflets (a "The Cradle Will Rock" reference) and saying that they need to "Free Communicado". She had heard that someone was being held incommunicado and thought that Communicado was an actual place (unlike Tarnation, of course).
Clothing check: Joe Boxer boxer shorts. That's all (a Laurie Beechman reference). Otherwise, today I have been doing laundry (hence only the boxer shorts) and recording records onto my computer so that I can make CDs of them for a friend of mine and myself. I was able to record the albums of "Scrooge" with Albert Finney and "Two's Company" with Bette Davis (so far). "Scrooge" was no problem but "Two's Company" is really old and even though it doesn't have any scratches or jumps, it has pops and clicks all over the place. It's very difficult to listen to. Does anyone have a (potentially better than my) copy of the record (possible already on CD) that they could copy for me? I'd be more than willing to trade...unless we're not allowed to announce/ask for things like that on HHW, the most popular site on the Internet. If that's the case, please disregard the "offending passage" (a "1776" reference) above.
Also, I have worn sandals, both with and without socks...although not at the same time. As soon as I get home, I take off of my feet whatever is on them. I don't like to wear shoes or socks inside my own home. I don't know why. My sister can't stand to go bare footed, even in her own house...well, actually especially in her own house. She has a cat and a dog.
Dave, even with your hint, I still have no clue about the Unseemly Trivia Contest. I must not watch the correct "hugely successful long-running 90s television series."

Maybe I would if I had access to broadband internet connections etc. I am too far from a city for it to be worthwhile. Even the TV reception is Black and White and we have only reached 1962 in our programming. OK I made most of that up but we still have to rely on bottled gas (very expensive) for heating and cable TV is not on. (Had satelite pay TV for a while but it was too expensive when we average about less than 2 hours viewing per day.
DR Jose brought storms with him to Sydney which have caused massive confusion and problems - did Jose to stay to survey the damage? NO! He just left for sunny Queensland.

Good evening DRs........ We couldn't be here earlier, because we had an out of town guest here for a few days, and we took him out for a bite, and then we saw "Camp." I liked it very much, and it was a fun evening.
DR Susan -- OK, I'm not trying to keep you in suspense, so here goes. The silly game of "six degrees" where it is often surprising what a little separation there is between our lives.....even though we may only meet a person recently. So, here are the only TWO degrees of separation between dear reade Susan, and your's truly, MusicGuy.
On October 3rd, 1961, Susan was a guest star on the pilot episode of "The New Breed." It was about a special unit of the L.A.P.D., and she played a kidnap victim. One of the lead detectives was played by John Beradino. By 1967, John Beradino was playing Dr. Steve Hardy on "General Hospital" and I was the substitute music director for that show 2 different times that year, and visited with John Beradino. See... only 2 degrees of separation, and yet we only finally met in person in NYC. By the way, Hollywood Reporter reviewer Hank Grant said about the pilot... "moppet Susan Gordon was startlingly good!"
Then, in 1962, our Susan filmed an episode of "Route 66" on location right here in Phoenix. And you know what? She forgot to call DR Kerry...he was here at the time, and remembers that the show was filming here. Spooky! (a Dame Edna reference).
It's wonderful how close lives can come to touching, and then not actually happen until years later.

Okay, I'll play Six Degrees of Separation: me to Sondheim (and everyone he's worked with)! I have a very good friend named Nona who is very good friends with Jeanne Lehman who, of course, was in the concert "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall" (along with everyone else in Sondheim's Stable of Singers). Jeanne (I've been told) has understudied for and even vacationed with Julie Andrews.

I'm back. We had some absolutely wild winds rip through yesterday, and power was restored again this morning (absolutely no temptation to desert our houses and walk down main street in the middle of the day, new york style).
I must say that I too was a hospitalised lil' youngun... I had the count backwards from 100, so I can answer your question about how does a three year old reply... "100.. 9-" *splunk*.
*splunk* is the sound of a persistantly raised head finally falling limp upon the operating table.
I also had a bee-related incident. Well, wasps really. I was at my grandparents place on christmas morning and some wasps managing to swarm me and sting me on the legs and arms... while leisurely eating my breakfast at an outdoor setting. It was I inhabiting the outdoor setting. Well, the wasps too, apparently, but I was the one having the breakfast.
RE: Willy Wonka remake.. It is one of my absolute favourite childhood films. It was pure magic as a child, and I wanted nothing other than to be Charlie. I was also a huge fan of the Dahl books. I hope if they do remake it, it is not bogged down in special effects, the original effects worked wonderfully, because you couldn't tell where they were. I think a lot of Dahl translates really well to film (think of the horrifying "Witches"). Maybe The Twits would be interesting? Or the sequal to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator". BFG would be magical as a film too (not the animated one).

Despite the criticisms of Wonka, the film has always been a favourite with our nieces and nephews and I think all kids I know who have seen it. A great success with children and surely that really should be the measure. I was horrified when I read a few years back that Mr Jackson wanted to remake it.
Sydney was certainly hit well and truly by the arrival of Jose. I hope his arrival in Melbourne on Thursday is not with the same force!

DR Tom - What did I do to Sydney? I don't remember doing anything while I was in the airport for a few hours waiting to connect to head to Gold Coast. -Should I check the weather report?
We had the first day of auditions here in Gold Coast. Nice turn out, and there was some really wonderful talent. Now it's just a matter of remembering all these people six weeks from now when we wrap up in LA. The local coordinators have really done their homework, and all we really had to do today was show up at the venue. And the venue is a Police Youth an Athletic Club - neat facility. And the upright piano I was using had a Disklavier system built into it - I didn't use it, but it was neat knowing it was there.
It was also a gorgeous day here, and I was up early enough to catch the sunrise - truly beautiful over the coastline.
-And as for yesterday - there truly is nothing like eating some prawns, crabs and oysters on a beach you have just sailed up to. Oh, and the beer was good too!
Tonight, some of the team - myself included - is heading over to a local casino to catch a show. And tomorrow - which is 14 hours sooner for me than back home - is, well, you know... I plan to spend the morning feeding some lorikeets in a bird sanctuary, and then I think I'm going jet-skiing in the afternoon! Let the celebration begin!
Oh, and one more thing DR Tom, I actually will be arriving in Mebourne on Wednesday, mid-day. Watch out! ;-)

We are looking forward to the arrival of a Hainsie in this Down under town - birthplace of Dame Edna.

School starts today, wish Paulie, Maya, and myself luck!
I'll TRY to check in duringn the day, but I doubt I'll be able to...librarians are evil when it comes to computers...

Good luck to all you unfortunates who start school before Labour Day!
[insert pompous evil laugh]
Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha! :)
If it's any consolation, I'm going to be working full time up until the day before I start school again. So - I have to get up early too... I swear!!! :)
I am still bitter about missing chat. My stupid friends (yes, the ones I was calling lovely yesterday for coming to Miss Saigon with me) were late so I had to go to the 9pm showing of American Splendour (or is that Splendor?) instead of the 7:15.
Blech.
Great movie, but somehow I feel like I'm missing something in my life. Possibly something like thong references. Hmmm....
Have a great day everyone and drink coffee Sarah. Nothing will get you through a first day back like some kick ass java :)

Jose,
Wave to Moonie Ponds (birthplace or residence of dame Edan) on the way to see Tom. There really IS a Moonie Ponds.
I worked yesterday, and then we saw "Camp" in the evening. Cute movie. I'm tired now, but it's time to got to work again. I feel lIke the guy in the old Dunkin'Donuts commercial... "Time to make the doughnuts!"
I think it was very rude of Susan to have been here filmimg in 1962 and not even call to say Hello.

Yes, everyone, drink coffee. You know, my plan is to open an espresso stand when I get to Carson City. So if any DRs are ever in the Carson City/Reno area, be sure to stop by for a delicious latte :)

DR Kerry, my humblest apologies. But, if you knew I was in town, shouldn't you have come to welcome me? ;-)

I couldn't get amyone to drive me (not even for George Maharis), and it WAS a school day, so you know how it goes.
