Shall we give Mark an "A" on his test? Now, where in tarnation IS everyone? We must make up for lost time. We must put on rouge and pancake and some blush and eyeliner for lost time. Although lost time never makes up for us. It just sits there like so much fish, sans makeup, freckles and all.

Surprisingly enough, I AM here. It's been a rather uneventful birthday so far, which is a good thing, as I'm all surprised-out. At midnight last night an abundance of birthday messages were Instant Messaged and emailed to me, and I even got a birthday dance with DR Paulie. I also saw a picture of a decapitated body, the separated head, and the brain. It was NOT pleasant, and don't you know DR Paulie's comment was "Well that was a great way to start off your birthday."
He is so supportive when I am panicking.
Anywho, my presents were actually the tickets to see MILLIE tonight. 6 tix, 55 bucks a pop, thats a BIG present!
I plan on going and meeting Miss Juliana Hansen and Miss Bradley Benjamin after the show and gushing to them about how spectacular it was.
Do you know that my mother made me vacuum the THREE staircases in my house today? It is my BIRTHDAY. And vacuuming stairs is my absolute least favorite chore of all time. When I get married, I am making my husband vacuum every stupid step in the house. She KNOWS this, and yet she still made me do it. Evil, I tell you. My parents must be martians.
I'm only going to be able to check in for another 45 minutes or so, and then it's off to dinner, Millie, and then partying in my basement until dawn. I'll gush to you all tomorrow about how fabulous it was.
Oh, and bk: Freckles are CUTE. Why anyone covers them up, I don't know. I love my freckles.

So HHW is operating again. Hooray! I shall go back to bed (6.25 am here). I am of course quite tired after the reading of all those posts.

BK and I sound just alike as far as parties where there are nothing but strangers. I am not one to inflict myself upon people I don't know, and I generally stand around like the perenniel wallflower until someone else comes over to talk to me or I leave. So, I know just what he was feeling yesterday.
I think I'm in the mood for THE WIZ tonight on DVD.

I am SO jealous of your birthday dance with Paulie.
I am older than you. I should be the one getting all these dances! :)

Happy Birthday, DR Sarah - and you know stairs must be vacuumed sometime! I live in a "ranch" style house with NO stairs, so I am lucky in that regard.
I am so happy to hear that the 1953 TITANIC looks good. According to Amazon.com, there is a commentary by Robert Wagner and Audrey Dalton, and since I have preordered the disk, I shall look forward to it. Have you listened to any of the commentary, Mr BK, or examined any of the extras.
WHERE EAGLES DARE is also on that pre-order is much looked forward to here at the ranch.
Tonight I am having a Movie Night with two of my sisters. We are watching A TALE OF TWO CITIES with Mr Dirk Bogarde and I SAW WHAT YOU DID a William Castle movie featuring a smallish performance by Miss Joan Crawford. That is, the screen time of her character is smallish...in no way is the performance smallish!
DR MBarnum sent me a DVD of DR Susan's performance on an episode of GUNSMOKE that is very good. She is in nearly every shot and interacts with all the regulars including Doc and Miss Kitty AND Chester....who even directed the episode. Bravo, Miss Gordon. Also on the DVD is one of DR Susan's appearances on BEN CASEY....I enjoy her performance, although she is in a coma most of the time, but the ethics of Dr Ben Casey's actions in this particular episode are VERY suspect. Co-guest star Jeanne Cooper won an Emmy (or maybe just a nomination) for her work on this episode.

Happy B-day DR Sarah. I hope your time at MILLIE was great. I just got my eBay winnings in the mail, a region 2 DVD on ALW's "By Jeeves" - which I saw in Westwood in 1997 and LMAO. (that's internet lingo with words I can't say here) Anyhow, I thought it would play on my portable DVD player which has a PAL setting, but it doesn't - however, it does play on my computer. I guess that means a party in my bedroom!! My it's a lazy sunday afternoon.

Well, I tuned in at 1:15 p.m. Pacific Time and had to ask myself, "Wherefore art thou everyone?" I hit the Refresh button 15 minutes later and, lo and behold, there youse are!
BIRTHDAY GREETINGS SWEET SWISHY SARAH WHO'S ALL OF SIXTEEN! Somewhat of a milestone--although 13 seems to be more of one ("teen" years and all that). I remember once when I was in a dance studio waiting room and a young lady with red hair and freckles sitting next to me said, "I'm so excited!" When I asked why, she said, "Today is by birthday. I'm 13 years old." Pause...then..."I've been waiting for this my whole life!"
After seeing the video THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF UNCLE HARRY, I decided to do some research on its star, George Sanders. Did you know that he recorded an album in 1958? It's called, THE GEORGE SANDERS TOUCH: SONGS FOR A LOVELY LADY. I heard a snippet of it on the internet and, guess what, he's good! I'd love to get it on CD but the only source I found was on on vinyl at eBay.
CRAIG RUBANO is a new Cabaret West member out of New York and he has a very interesting program that he's also recorded on CD. It's called FINISHING THE ACT: ACT ONE FINALES FROM BROADWAY. I immediately thought of you all since we had a topic of discussion not long ago on this here site about "eleven o'clock" numbers. Craig contends that dramatically and historically the Act One closers are a very important slot in a Broadway musical because by then the show's plot has usually reached a turning point. Click on my name to go to his website and read his notes from the CD.

It's the swishiest Sarah's birthday, and there's a party in Matthew's bedroom.

Happy, happy, O'Happy birthday to you S. Sarah! Hope you enjoy your day!
BK, I finally was able to watch NAKED SPACE. I was beginning to think that the force was against me what with the troubles of the rental tape being defective, being outbid on the DVD every time I tried to get it on Ebay, and then the nasty DVD player that wouldn't play the sound on the DVD! Argh.
So Iplugged in my new DVD player and watched away. I enjoyed the movie and just cracked up at the dancing, show tune singing mass of goo monster! That was hilarious! Ms. Cindy Williams was her usually funny self and you can't go wrong with Leslie Nielson! Mr. Bruce, you also were quite good and it was a lot of fun to finally see you in a movie. You had some lines that just cracked me up. I must keep a look out for some of your TV appearences!
What ever became of the guy who played the monster, BK? Can you tell me this piece of trivia? Did he go onto a career as a goo monster?

Happy Birthday to Sweet Sixteen Sarah!!
I have spent the first several hours of my day at church/work/meeting. Fun, fun, fun (that is three funs).
I also do not like crowds, even when it's people I know. I prefer to stand in the background and watch everyone else.

BK:
I was also amused by the use in NAKED SPACE of footage from that horrible (but hilarious) Japanese TV show SPECTREMAN!

Dear Reader MBarnum:
Have you NOT seen BK in THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL?
As I interjected into my review of the Special Edition dvd:
"Finally, there is the John Smithee of the multi-tasker Bruce Kimmel. Kimmel also takes a stock character (see the Mormon son in "Paint Your Wagon"), the hapless, sad-sack who turns into a heroic figure after being seduced. Kimmel makes sitting down in a chair funny, and Smithee created on bits of business usually involving slapstick. It's a surprising physical performance, and Kimmel has obviously learned a lot from the classic clowns of yore: Stan Laurel, Buster Keaton et al seem to eminate from his body. It doesn't hurt that Bruce posesses a cherubic face; he looks just like you would WANT your baby brother to look, and his Smithee is someone you just want to reach out and hug. End of interjection. "
Seek it out, sir.

don't know where everyone else was yesterday, but Miss Susan Gordon was here at the Annual Scarlet Street Barbeque and Pool Party, where we all celebrated Labor Day by briefly going into labor and a select few heard JEEPERS CREEPERS: GREAT SONGS FROM HORROR FILMS. Among the select few was Miss Susan Gordon herself, who hadn't heard her own delightful number on the CD ("You're My Living Doll" from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE) and received an enthusiastic round of applause from the other guests.
I'm happy to hear that the link to the online page for ordering JEEPERS CREEPERS is now up on haineshisway, and suggest that all those who have not done so immediately order the CD, the better to applaud Miss Susan Gordon as soon as you receive your copy, and also to applaud Mr. Guy Haines, whose efforts I'm sure you all support, and his splendid rendition of "Look For a Star" from CIRCUS OF HORRORS . . .

Michael: I'm glad you liked Naked Space. I have detailed my displeasure with the version known as Naked Space and/or Spaceship on many occasions. Still, I'm always happy that people find something to like in it. Someday, hopefully sooner than later, we'll put both versions, my cut and theirs on one DVD and then you'll see what the film was supposed to be. BTW, the Japanese footage was inserted by the people who recut it.
Ron Kurowski, who played the Creature, had been in a musical of mine called Stages, and he went on to play the role of Bobby in A Chorus Line, both on tour and on Broadway more times than any other actor (I believe he was in the show for over seven years on B'way).

TD: I do intend to get THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL DVD very soon. You know I can remember when that movie came out. I was a wee one back then and I thought it was some sort of "adult" film! LOL! That impression had stayed with me all these years until I found myself in the realm of HHW.
Sarah, I am doing the TWIST (my favorite dance...and the only one that I know the steps too) in honor of your swishy birthday.
Posted by MBarnum @ 08/31/2003 03:11 PM PST
Dave, I'm guessing nobody commented on those Tony nominees, David Yazbek, Paul Gordon, Mark Hollmann, Marc Shaiman, Robert Reale because each is only responsible for one musical. It's hard to judge on the basis of just one. Lay's potato chips aren't judged on the basis of just one. What the hell am I talking about?
Best wishes to Sarah of the swishy shorts.

Dear Readers:
I am not a doctor, and I don't even play one on TV, but earlier today I made a major medical discovery. Yes, dear readers, I discovered a new malady with numerous, horrible symptoms. I call this malady HHWDS, which stands for HainesHisWay Deprivation Syndrome. The signs of this syndrome include slight fever, headache, perspiration in unseemly locations around the body, twitchy fingers, and a complete state of farblonjetness.
Thankfully, Mr. Mark Bakalor (aka Mr. Bark Makalor) discovered the antidote to HHWDS soon after my own discovery, and the world is saved.
Oh yes. One more comment: Happy Birthday, Swishy Sarah!

Noel, I agree that it is difficult to judge the talent of a composer based on one score. Funny, isn't it, how the New York Times can hail Adam Guettel as the saviour of musical theatre, when he too is responsible for only one book musical (FLOYD COLLINS). We can't count LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, since very few have heard it, and he was receiving those kinds of laudatory reviews long before that show was in previews.
On a similar note, there are a number of pop composers who have taken to writing for the stage in the past several years. Paul Simon, Elton John, the previously-discussed Randy Newman...what are people's thoughts on their work?

I just escaped my friend for a bit to come and say:
MILLIE WAS SO UNBELIEVABLE!!
The show itself was unbelievable in every possible way, I was all teary eyed with wonder throughout the whole thing. That seriously is something I'd like to do with my life. I'll gush tomorrow, right now I have guests.
I got there with a plan to get the ticket that she throws from the orchestra pit. The man said no. I pouted. I went during intermission, strategically planned out makiung friends with the ENTIRE front row, and after the show, raced down to find 3 people saying "SURE you can have the ticket!"
It was nice :)
I met Juliana Hansen (UNBELIEVABLE girl, amazing sweet, couldn't say enough great things about her), Darcie (likewise, very awesome, wanted to hear me sing!), Diana, and Matt backstage, talked forever, got some pictures, autographs, and jokes to share.
And you know how I said that the tickets were my present.
They got me a cell phone. I was FLIPPING OUT! It's awesome.
I'll babble tomorrow, but THANK YOU! to everyone who wished me a happy birthday. It was amazing, completely unforgettable :)

I don't get just what is so great about the stage version of MILLIE. I enjoyed it, but it was the kind of throwaway entertainment that you see one day and basically forget about the next unlike truly memorable shows that you think about a lot and see many times. It's certainly not a bad show, and it's a good entertaining show that is of the type that used to be designated "for the tired businessman" --- in other words good music, slightly off-color gags and beautiful chorus girls. But if you stop and think about it there are several weak numbers (poor Muzzie is stuck with the worst songs in the score no matter how good the actress is) and it's a very strange combination of new songs and old songs. Also, as funny as it is, the show is very offensive to Asians. Yes it's a good show, but a great show? I don't think so. MILLIE will be forgotten as soon as it closes while A CHORUS LINE, MY FAIR LADY, CABARET, the R&H classics, GUYS AND DOLLS et. al. will live on.

The three-named (the middle name is implied) Adam I'm-Richard-Rodgers'-grandson-so-you-better-love-me Guettel had a second musical, Myths and Hymns, at the Public. I think it also had the title Saturn Returns at some point. I've never seen any of his shows, but that second musical (or was it just a song cycle) added fuel to the bonfire of Times praise.
