"THE BUSY DAYS AHEAD"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, here we are on a brand spanking new Monday, and I fear the next two to three days will be absolutely nutty at work, as we must get the next two shows to the network by Wednesday afternoon, notes addressed on the other two shows they got last week, and voice-overs done as well. Plus, I have to go out tomorrow afternoon and shoot some pickups for the show we’re currently in the midst of. The point being that you, dear readers, will have to keep this here joint jumpin’, although I will post as much as I can.

The brand new radio show is up and running – it’s Donald and I talking all about the new CD, Jeepers Creepers, and we talk about a few other things as well, so you’ll want to listen straight through to the end.

Over the weekend I watched a few DVDs. First, I watched Mr. Michael Ritchie’s film, An Almost Perfect Affair. It’s an odd little film, has some quirky humor, but really, it just doesn’t add up to much and it just sort of peters out. That said, I adore Miss Monica Vitti and Raf Vallone so they are worth the cost of the DVD. Plus, there are some very amusing cameos (the entire film was shot at the Cannes Film Festival). The male lead, Keith Carradine, is serviceable but nothing more. Lovely score by Georges Delerue. Very nice enhanced transfer which shows off the beautiful camerawork of Henri Decae.

I then watched Mr. Paddy Chayefsky’s The Hospital, starring Mr. George C. Scott and a host of good actors in support. I remember adoring the film when it came out, but while some of it is still very good, a lot of it hasn’t aged well. Still, the writing is trenchant and the acting superb. The transfer is a bit of a botch, despite being enhanced for widescreen TVs. Many shots are simply mis-framed, some too high up, some too low – there are several scenes at the beginning where the tops of heads are literally cut in half. Someone wasn’t paying attention.

I then watched Mr. John Schlesinger’s Sunday Bloody Sunday, starring Miss Glenda Jackson and Mr. Peter Finch, along with Mr. Murray Head. It, too, seems very forced today, whereas it was quite something in its day. Shoddy transfer – non-enhanced and on the brown side.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got a busy few days coming up, don’t you know?

Don’t forget, tonight is our Unseemly Live Chat at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time. Be there or be round.

I traded in some DVDs over the weekend and got some interesting stuff – including a lovely boxed set of the five put-together The Man From UNCLE movies that were released in the UK. It’s a Region 2 DVD – I checked out the transfers and they look nice. I also picked up a noir called The Chase, starring Mr. Robert Cummings, adapted from the book The Black Path of Fear by Mr. Cornell Woolrich. Unfortunately, it’s one of those public domain DVDs from Alpha and the quality is wretched. Avoid at all costs, even at seven bucks. I also got two very peculiar CDs – one of Pat Suzuki’s VIK and RCA recordings and one of Miss Yvonne DeCarlo singing, which is surprisingly good – with orchestrations and musical direction by none other than Mr. John Williams (circa late 50s).

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must hie myself to the Oaks of Sherman where I shall work all the livelong day and then go shoot pickups in an optometrist’s office. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite and most obscure albums, whether record or CD. Let us in on your guiltiest pleasures and your oddest oddball items. I’ll start – I still have an LP entitled The Best of Marcel Marceau – you put on the record and there’s nothing on it, just silence. Also, my Derek and Clive Live album, one of the funniest albums ever made (Derek and Clive are really Peter Cook and Dudley Moore). I also have the Japanese CD of A Chorus Line (in Japanese) – it’s very outré. Also, Betty Hutton’s Saints and Sinners LP, conducted by film composer Jerry Fielding. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely posts and you must keep the joint jumpin’. See you at chat.

- Bruce Kimmel

I shall not be at the unseemly live chat this evening because I have been invited by a dear friend to see him in the final dress of Boy From Oz. Quite excited as this is my very first "final dress" experience. I was supposed to have that back with LSoH, but alas - they cancelled it...

I am enjoying a day off today after working a gruelling weekend. I shall be back to post later...

Posted by Craig @ 09/15/2003 07:59 AM PST

Good morning, all. I shall also miss tonight's chat, as we have a birthday in our family to celebrate.

Probably my favorite odd CD is something called "The Jello is Always Red" by the man who wrote the songs for "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."

Posted by Old Laura @ 09/15/2003 08:05 AM PST

BK - Obviously you never listened to "The Best of Marcel Marceau" all the way through because at the very end of the silence there is applause. Yes, I had that too although it is one I got rid of during a move. In the same category was a Jayne Mansfield LP of poetry reading. Isn't her daughter on some series now?

The TOPPER episode I watched was indeed a Sondheim episode. The show's dialogue was sparkling... much better and more sophistocated than the average sitcom of the period or thereafter. Had Sondheim remained writing sitcoms, the sitcom would probably be a lot better today although I shudder to think what state the musical theatre would be in. Speaking of TOPPER, I have to say that Anne Jeffries was one of the most beautiful stars of the 50s and based on a couple of recent things I have seen her on she is as beautiful today as she was then. Although the TOPPER episode was taped almost 50 years ago, Ms. Jeffries has aged at the most fifteen years. I'd hate to see the picture in her attic.

Two of my favorite LPs which are "out there" and oddball (though the second one is more than the first) are records made by a 1970s 3-man gay group called Gotham. The first album, appropriately called Gotham was, IMHO, quite good. I enjoyed it a lot. It came out in 1977. It's out of print and hard to find, though I have seen it in some used record shops (not quite as hard to find as Joan Morris and her Civil War songs album, Who Shall Rule This American Nation which I am looking for btw). The second album by Gotham is pretty, how shall I say this, BAD It's called Void Where Inhibited and it's a complete change from the soft rock/pop and harmonies that they did on the first album. They went hard core rock and roll and the result is not good. I had seen them live in their early years in the mid to late 70s and dragged friends to see them and badgered them to buy the first album. After the second album and the style change they fell off the charts. Oh, well. I still have the albums. I play the first one but the second one is just to have for the collection of really bad records :-)

Posted by Ben @ 09/15/2003 08:27 AM PST

I have a peculiar LP called The Harmonies of the Spheres, or something like that, which took Johannes Kepler's theories about the ratios of the orbits of the planets and converted them into musical pitches. It is approximately 40 minutes of very strange modulating tones (sine waves) sounding somewhat like 9 simultaneous sets of fingernails on blackboards. What was I thinking?

Posted by JMK @ 09/15/2003 08:28 AM PST

My favorite obscure CDs are a couple of albums that cast members of FLOWER DRUM SONG came out with back in the 60s. I have two from Miyoshi Umeki who has an absolutely wonderful voice and she does a fantastic rendition of over the rainbow on one of the albums. I highly recommend her CDs if you can find them. I also have a 3rd album that she released, this one from Japan which came out in the 1950s when she went by the name Nancy Umeki. The other album is by James Shigeta. He is also a wonderful singer!

Good morning all! I'll give you three guesses as to where I am writing this from. Let's just say it has "brand spanking new" somewhere in the title.

Craig, if you aren't going to be in chat, then you simply HAVE to tell us what you ate yesterday at dinner with Jason. We are all simply dying after having that left to mule over for the last 12 hours. More importantly, was it slimey? I hope it was for your enjoyment :)

I am unhappy to announce that I have no obscure cds or (what's that old term again?) records. The closest I come to obscure is just really really really bad pop albums from my grade school days.

Hamster Dance anyone?

A friend made me a tape of Doug & Clive. The explication of Mama's Got a Brand New Bag is hilarious.

My favorite obscure LP is the puppet musical Man in the Moon by Jerry Bock & Sheldon Harnick. Somewhere, also, I have Songs From "The Flying Nun" - some of which are decent.

I, too, am glad Sondheim didn't stick with sitcom writing, and which that more had made the same choice. I've collaborated with some very talented people who have devoted their energies to the half-hour songless form, such as Adam Belanoff, Christopher Lloyd and Alexa Junge. Others in this category include Joe Keenan, David Krane & Marta Kauffman, and Stan Daniels, whose musical So Long 174th Street contains some of the funniest numbers ever.

BK, I spent last night listening to the new radio show with you and Donald and it was great. I don't get an opportunity to listen to it very often because Real Player does funny things to my new computer, but this is one of my favorites so far.

I am beginning to think that Swishy Sarah is your favorite Hainsie/Kimlet! :)

[insert rampant jealousy]

(we fought over - if I can remember correctly - Jason, Craig and Paulie, Sarah, don't make me take you on BK too!)

:)

Good morning, all. I should be at work already, but I'm not. I'll leave soon enough, though...have no fear.

The nuttiest CDs that I have? Well, POOP: The Musical! is up there near the top of my list. Florence Foster Jenkins: The Glory (????) of the Human Voice is quite strange and wonderful, as well. Pretty much everything else in my collection is sort of normal, I guess.

I was in Tower Records last night and noticed that the label that shall not be mentioned has re-released DAS BARBECU on CD and they changed the cover art! It looks like the cover for Judy Kuhn: Just In Time has been changed, as well. Are they re-releasing a series of discs, or have I just been totally oblivious to these things?

And now off to MTI...

Just read on Playbill.com that Ms. Marni Nixon will be joining the cast of NINE on Oct. 7, replacing Mary Beth Peil in the role of Guido's mother.

The Biltmore Theatre reopened today after 16 years of darkness. Its now the home of the Manhattan Theatre Club. I think that's exciting.

And speaking of exciting (for me, at least)...they finally began filming THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA today. Let's hope it works.

Anne Jeffreys is indeed still lovely. Now and then she is interviewed on a Biography, and I saw her on a home shopping channel selling some kind of makeup, but that was a couple of years ago.

Hmmmmmmmm....well first all, I must have the Pat Suzuki and Yvonne deCarlo cd's! I have the Pat album and it was old when I got it at a yard sale!

Lancelot Link and the Evolution Revolution LP...from a Saturday morning live action series.

Monique Van Vooren Sings....

...and stuff like that. Mostly bought at yard sales, Goodwill, and when the mail order LP business went under right in my own hometown...and albums were selling at 100 for $25!

From the net...Judy Garland singing I'LL PLANT MY OWN TREE and the Patty Duke Folk Song Album - never released...never really finished.

The one album I want is one listed as an Imperial Records release, but just can't be so:
"Frances Farmer Swings Fats Domino."

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 08:53 AM PST

I agree JRand53, I must have the Yvonne DeCarlo CD...BK, where did you find that one!

...and Lancelot Link...I looooove that show. Loved it as a kid...loved it as an adult (when Nickelodian was running it late at night)...hmmmm, next time you make me a CD!!!

Fashion report: Right now I am wearing absolutely nothing! Posting from home can be so relaxing, don't you think?

My personal favorite guilty pleasure CD is the Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration recording. I can't really call it a soundtrack, because it's not part of a film. It is music that was played during parades and fireworks displays at Disney's Epcot during 1999/2000. The stuff makes absolutely no sense whatsoever without having seen the parades/fireworks, and since the only time I've been in Florida was about a decade prior to 1999/2000 the music is nonsense to me, but I still enjoy the long instrumental tracks. The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are trash, and I usually skip over them.

Had you all going with that first paragraph, didn't I!!! Did you expect more detailed descriptions if you kept reading? Come on, 'fess up!

Jason,

Any word on this week's press release yet?

I heard a rumour that Lincolnshire is doing SUNSET BOULEVARD next season? Could that mean what I think it means??

BTW, I had a nice birthday on Friday. Thanks everyone for asking. ;-(

One of my presents was tix to see THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE on tour, so guess who I will be meeting next month?

Also got the DVD of CHICAGO, but haven't had time to sit down to watch any of it yet.

Listened to Donald's new radio show. Fun.

Happy belated birthday Dave!

So sorry we missed it... :)

I'm off now to CONFLICT, CRISIS AND WAR - aka the most interesting subject matter with the worst teacher.

I get through it only by thinking of ways to stage an armed revolution and declare war on the awful awful awful prof.

jk :)

(my gun control bosses would be rolling over in their graves if they were dead... and were reading HHW of course)

Another outre delight - Eddie
Albert and Margo.

Posted by bk @ 09/15/2003 09:22 AM PST

Dave: I don't think the release has been...well, released, yet. I can tell you that it has nothing to do with SUNSET BOULEVARD. MTI no longer handles the Andrew Lloyd Webber shows...that's Rodgers & Hammerstein's territory.

Speaking of MTI...I decided to call in today. I've been having these terrible coughing fits all morning, which is good, I suppose, because the stuff is loosening up in my chest, but it hurts like the Dickens and its really loud, so I thought it best not to disturb anyone at work by hacking up my lungs there. Aren't I the considerate one? I need the money, but I need to get this stuff out of my chest, too. The new office manager was quite nice about it, saying that he'd had the same thing just two weeks ago. I'll go in tomorrow for sure.

Just thought of another favorite guilty pleasure CD. Its called Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Q, and it features the characters from Space Ghost: Coast to Coast singing such 'hits' as "Mah-Nuh-Mah-Nuh," "Don't Touch Me!," "The Song That Never Ends," "Highway 41," and my personal favorite, "I Love Beans." Its a hoot to listen to, but there's some emotional baggage attached to it, which I won't go into now, so I don't listen to it very often.

Posted by Jason @ 09/15/2003 09:29 AM PST

I had chicken fried rice - the very thing DR Jason always gets and it was divine. So was the fried shrimp roll I had... Jason and I had quite the interesting conversations... but that's just between us LOL

As for unique albums - one of my favs is a cd that was produced as an incentive gift for a drug company to be given out at a convention. On it is a bunch of winter/holiday songs. On two of the tracks, our very own Ms. Kerry Butler shines!

Posted by Craig @ 09/15/2003 09:37 AM PST

Happy belated birthday, Dave!

I regret that I, too, shall have to miss the unseemly chat this evening, as I will be attending the Musical Theatre Guild's one-night-only semi-staged presentation of Jason Robert Brown's PARADE at the Alex Theatre in beautiful downtown Glendale this evening.

DR Ben: Though I don't have either of their albums, I remember Gotham and loved them! (I must have seen them before their style conversion.)

DR Jason: I, too, have the Florence Foster Jenkins album, with the "Faust Travesty" on the B side. Hysterical!

A few oddballs in my collection:

"The Great French Carousel Organs" (on vinyl), which includes stuff like "The William Tell Overture," "Jalousie," and "America" from WEST SIDE STORY.

"Pop Goes the Accordion" (on vinyl) featuring the Hohner Accordion Symphony Orchestra, doing selections from MY FAIR LADY and the waltzes from Gounod's FAUST, amongst other things.

"The Diva Collection--The Hollywood Ladies Sing!" (on CD), which includes Joan Crawford singing "I Never Knew Heaven Could Speak," Gloria Swanson singing "Love," and Tallulah Bankhead singing "What Do I Care?"

Posted by Jay @ 09/15/2003 09:38 AM PST

Jason,

That's what I thought. I knew the rest of the ALW catalogue was with R&H, but one never knows about these things...

I thought the same thing about the Disney shows. Disney is always so guarded with their property, I would be surprised to see any other agency get control of those titles. But who knows?

The only other title that would be in any way "major" would be RENT, but it doesn't seem like that would warrant any more press coverage than THE PRODUCERS or THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, which seemed to be added to the MTI catalogue without much fanfare. Then again, maybe I'm wrong...

Here's a song about my favorite food!

Limas, lentils, soy and pintos,
Navy, northern and garbanzo...
Kidneys and frijoles negros,
I love beans.

I love beans,
Woo woo woo!
I love beans!
How 'bout you?
High in fiber,
Low in fat.
Hey, I betcha didn't know that!

When I eat beans,
I sit in my own little cloud.
Nobody comes to visit me
In my little cloud.

(I don't know why. Maybe 'cause I'm cuttin' muffins...)

Because...
I love beans
Hey, hey, hey!
I love beans everyday!
Beans are an excellent source of protein...
I love beans!
Dinky-doo.

Well...I bought a gently used Audiotronics 304E phonograph that plays ALL four speeds and sounds pretty good.

I know there is a way to convert an LP track to what (Mp3 or WAV file) and then burn to CD - and I know it is probably done with a connection between the phonograph and the computer using the headphone jack...but I don't know how yet...BUT when I do, I will make your Cd, DR MBarnum! Just don't wait by the mailbox quite yet.

Happy Belated Birthday, Dave. I didn't see the reminder!

Space Ghost BarBCue is also one of my favorite CD's, Jason, and I couldn't tell you exactly why. The show always cracks me up...especially the pauses and the reactions of the cartoon characters....

Oh gosh, I have a couple of Eddie Peabody albums...banjo, you know. And the Dorothy Provine 'Roaring 20's" LP's that we have talked about on here before.

And an (almost complete) collection of Annette Funicello LP's. I am missing "Pajama Party", but I will get it someday...oh and "Bikini Beach"...those Lp's are on my list, but not must buys right now.

While some of the dear

NEVER remember, which is
why I continually ask for
people to e-mail me the

little calendar which sits next
to my computer. So, if you
want a birthday bash here
send me the info. In case I
haven't made it clear enough:
Send me the info. Also, send
me the info. I've said it one
time, I've said it twenty times,
send me the info. But, just in
case I'm not being absolutely
crystal clear, send me the info.
Do not expect me to
remember posts from a month
ago, a week ago or yesterday.
By the way (BTW, in Internet
lingo), send me the info.

Happy belated birthday to Dave and happy birthday in advance to Vintage Laura!

Well, the server on the PC is working again so as of now I am listening to Guy Haines singing a lovely version of Look for a Star.

I should be able to make MOST of tonight's chat--I have a sociology exam tonight, but I should be home around 9 Eastern time or so.

I have a few unusual LPs including John Barrymore Reads Shakespeare, Eva Le Gallienne and Louis Jourdan Read Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal, a Vivian Blaine record she recorded in the 70's, a Bea Lille record, a Joel Grey record, a record with rare Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence tracks...and a few more.

Oh my God....I just got to the talking track before the Judy Kaye medley and I totally did NOT expect to be mentioned!! Thank you, BK! :) Too cool!

here's the question - I can
open the room before I leave,
and you all can just get there

postpone the chat until
tomorrow at six. Let me know
your thoughts as soon as you
can.

Has anyone else noticed that the new TV GUIDE format is very difficult to read?

They have done away with the daily listings before evening...giving us one M-F listing...and some new grids, etc. It is not convenient...you simply cannot find what is on at a certain time on a certain day without a lot of flipping back and forth. GRRRRRRRRRRR....and there are more cardboard postcards and ads than EVER!!!

Guess it is time for me to keep my montly cable guide and save the $$ I have spent on TV GUIDE for all these many years. Goodbye, TV GUIDE!!!

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 10:22 AM PST

BK writes:

"if you want a birthday bash here send me the info"

As I said, I didn't want a birthday bash. I didn't want a fuss made at all. When I mentioned it today, I was *kidding*! ;-)

I am reminded of a quote from Dave Barry, in which he says, "There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven."

Posted by Dave @ 09/15/2003 10:23 AM PST

The Betty Hutton album sounds wonderful, but the Marcel Marceau album sounds hysterical.

Dave, a very happy belated birthday. Are you going to "Thoroughly Modern Millie" or is it going to you? Whichever, lucky you.

I don't have a favorite and most obscure albums, however, I did watch a wonderful old movie last night I recommend. "Separate Tables" with David Niven, Bert Lancaster, Wendy Hiller, Deborah Kerr, along with other fine actors.

Posted by Jane @ 09/15/2003 10:23 AM PST

TV Guide has been basically useless for a long time. There are just too many channels available for them to list them all, and even the ones they list are (necessarily) sans accurate channel info. They also haven't had room for program summaries for quite awhile. Now that the listings have been put on a cable channel all their own (including correct channel numbers, copious summaries, and ALL the channels), there's really no reason at all for TV Guide to exist.

And, lest I forget, Happy Birthday, Dave!

OMG, I can't believe how many posts there were last night!!!!

Happy belated b-day Dave. I sort of understand why he didn't email BK. My birthday was in April. But it feels sort of weird advertising it to get a party :)

Noel: re: the idea of inviting only women to your bachelor party.

It is definitely an interesting idea. I totally get why the standard bachelar party might repulse you. But nobody says that guys have to do that. They can go to a restaurant, play pool, play golf, or do anything that the groom wants to do!

Oh and for the BB4 people: I am so sickened by what is happening in the house now! :(

Bring back Erika please.

Well, I decided it was time to get some lunch, so I went out searching for a place that would take my credit card, since I only have enough money in my checking account now to pay my rent. I decided to go to a small health food store across the street. I haven't been there in over a year and a half, so I thought I'd give it a go, and I'm so glad I did! I got a wonderful roasted chicken breast sandwich on a baguette roll with lettuce and herb mayonnaise for $4.50! That's less than I spend if I even look at McDonalds, and this sandwich is HUGE! I'm only a fourth of the way through it and I'm already starting to fill up. I will most certainly be returning to The Garden from now on.

Re: Dr. Phil

I have never watched his show. But I obviously know who he is. I did catch some of his obesity special with Katie Couric on Friday.

It was interested.

I was with my sister yesterday in Club Price (does anyone else go there to snack on the free foods? :) ... and we saw his new book.

I didn't know he was selling diet bars. But I do think that anybody that is trying to tackle the weight issue, can't be all bad.

Oh btw, did anyone see the commercial for Trading Spaces that aired during Saturday's show.

It featured Paige, Laurie, Doug and Amy Wynn. And it showed there will be a special $100,000 episode in october.

Anyone know anything about this?

Well, you see Dave, you say
you were kidding and then you
reiterate that you drew a
smiley face - when you, in fact,
drew a frowny face. A frowny
face is what confused all of us,
Dave, really and truly. If you'd
drawn a smiley face in your
initial post we would have
known you were kidding.
However, you drew a frowny
face, hence we did not know
you were kidding - not just me,
everyone.

TV Guide is now unreadable. The articles look like a digest size tabloid. The listings are incomplete and the detail they used to be known for such as listing all major guests for primetime series is gone. I can subscribe to a special "cable edition", but that comes out days later than the newsstand edition. My on-screen guide might be okay if it listed more than a day or two at a time. I've never missed a TV Guide since the first issue (I wish I had saved them all... I could retire), but I find it a lot less useful than I did in the past.

Someone mentioned Miyoshi Umeki in an earlier posting. I have heard that she has totally dropped out of site. When they were trying to get all living Oscar-winning actors together a couple of years ago she was the only one that nobody could even locate.

Jason - Yes, that label is reissuing many BK recordings with new covers and notes. They have even started reissuing the "Lost In Boston" series. Since I have never bought these reissues, I don't know if BK is still getting producer credits or not. And I hope you feel better soon.

BK - Have you heard of a "Birthday Book"? It's like a calendar with no year. You just mark down birthdays and other annual events on the page for that date and you have it every year.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 09/15/2003 11:09 AM PST

WEL: He did get credit for the Judy Kuhn CD. I didn't think to look for his name on the BARBECU recording.

Anybody ever had a sudden revelation about a movie they'd already seen several times over the course of many years? I just did. Allow me to share it with you.

American Graffiti. A Volkswagen. Driving it: the most beautiful lady in Puppetland - Miss Yvonne.

As Buddy Ebsen might put it, "Weeeeeeeeeeeell, doggies!"

Posted by Lulu @ 09/15/2003 11:19 AM PST

They have removed the credit
occasionally from the inlay
card - but it always seems to
be in the booklet, or so I've
been told. Sometimes they
leave it on the inlay card. I
think when they leave my
credit, and the credits of the
arranger/conductors) off the
inlay, they look rather stupid for
having done so. I think they
are trying to minimize my
contribution to these CDs -
however, it's hard to minimize
my contribution to these CDs
since these CDs would not
exist if not for my contribution.

I can't quit listening to the radio show. I can't wait to hear the other tracks...and, yes, I'll admit it...I have listened to "Hey, You!/Song of the New Wine" about 40 times now, laughing at the fact that I sound like Jethro Bodine, or maybe 'Lil Abner---"Who, MEEE?!?!" The Scarlettes sound pretty darn good, though. It had to have been our conductor that made us so good. ;-)

Posted by Jason @ 09/15/2003 11:24 AM PST

I haven't developed an opinion on the new TV guide just yet. It does seem that with each format change there is less and less information. Of course with all of the channels (not that they list them all by any means) the book would have to become an encyclopedia. I like TV guide in that I can circle the shows I want to watch/tape as a reminder...but it is getting so that it is more and more difficult to sort through the shows listed as they type is small and there are sooooo many channels. I generally just scan for what is on TCM, mostly, anyway. I used to like to see who the guest stars were on the current shows, but they don't seem to list that info anymore, either. It is sort of a having your cake and eating it too situation....I want tons of channels to choose from AND an easy to read TV guide that lists everything and with all of the requisite information, plot outline, and cast. Just ain't possible I suppose!

Yes, Miyoshi Umeki is evidently lounging around incognito somewhere in the Hawaiian Islands with her hubby...I am guessing she doesn't want to be found...sort of like June Kenney!

Happy (very) belated birthday to Jennifer!!

(...and you hit the nail on the head. That's exactly why I didn't email my birthday info.)

Dr. Phil's diet book belongs on the same shelf as Oprah's diet book. ;-)

I will be going to TMM on the Lansing, MI tour stop next month.

Jason -- Yet, another advantage of being into musical theater. I would bet that 99% of the people your age have never heard of Lil Abner. The only exceptions would be those individuals who know anything about musicals. Last week, I mentioned to some of my co-workers, in passing, Sadie Hawkins Day. I started to explain what that was, but gave up when I realized that they had no idea who Lil Abner was.

I still buy TV Guide, because they put out a Comcast (cable) edition for my area that has all the right stations and in all the correct locations. But then again, I don't live in New York or LA. Seattle/Tacoma probably has fewer channels than you city fellers.

However, I did loose all respect for that magazine when they started using theatrical films, that had nothing to do with television, as their cover stories.

Posted by TCB @ 09/15/2003 11:53 AM PST

Obscure LP: Bobby Rydell sings songs from "Bye, Bye Birdie."

It's a white cover, with red letters. It was a "gimme" from the owner of my favorite record store...he gave it to me for being such a good customer. It has been unplayed for 40 years.

DVD watched over weekend: Very interesting film called "Sonny" directed by Nicolas Cage, starring the charismatic James Franco, and a quite superb Brenda Blethyn.

I bought, but haven't watched four MGM two-fers of gothic/horror films -- a couple of vampire flicks starring some actress, a bunch of Vincent Price stuff, including The Haunted Palace, Tomb of Ligeia, on and on. Each DVD was $12, so it was getting 8 films for $6 each.

I'm waiting for the first dreary, rainy Friday evening that rolls around -- putting a log in the fireplace and opening a bottle of wine before watching these films!

The Bay Area went from being suffocatingly hot (on Friday, the heat nearly sucked the breath form my lungs, so hot and dry was it). My Friday overnight sleep was misery personified. Outside temperature Saturday morning was 82 degrees. It got about 10 degrees warmer by noon. That's very hot for an area where the average high is in the mid-70s.

But the miracle called "the marine layer" moved in Saturday evening (aka "fog"), and we cooled way, way down.

Jennifer said I totally get why the standard bachelar party might repulse you. But nobody says that guys have to do that. They can go to a restaurant, play pool, play golf, or do anything that the groom wants to do!"

This groom loves show tunes peformed in an intimate setting, and that's what he's getting. Once I went out to dinner with male friends, one of them about to be married, at Musso & Frank and the damn L.A. cops erected a temporary no parking sign and towed my car off Hollywood Blvd. So the whole thing cost me about $300. My whole bachelor party may end up costing less.

I buy the TV Guide fall preview every year and then never watch TV. I do this for the perverse pleasure of reading the issue in early November, when more than half the new shows have already been cancelled and forgotten. It's a sickness, I know.

Posted by Noel @ 09/15/2003 12:37 PM PST

Jrand53, I guess I'm a little too young to have gotten the Joi Lansing reference. I just did a Google search on her, though, and she was quite fetching.

I will be at RAGTIME rehearsals tonight, so I won't be available for a chat. As for tomorrow, well...who knows? (Jerry Herman reference)

Help! I hope one of you out there can help RIGHT AWAY with a printer problem. I'm not used to a PC (I have a Mac Powerbook at home) and I'm using my host's computer. For some reason the printer has printed out dozens of pages of one line (or less) goblygook (symbols, hearts, numbers)... The printer is a Deskjet 842C and the red and green lights are blinking on it when I turn it on - it's off now. I've tried turning off the printer and restarting the computer, but to no avail. I don't want my hosts to come home and find I've messed up their system - plus I need to continue working. Any suggestions?

Posted by Panni @ 09/15/2003 01:11 PM PST

MBarnum: Thanks for the headsup. Once was enough, unless, of course, they're offering new video footage...something x-rated, perhaps?????

BB4: Rob has lost the second round of competition for the final HOH. Jun has won this second round. Rob has to put up or shut up in the third leg. Alison and Jun are being uglier and nastier and bitchier than ever now that they're pretty much alone in the house. Robert has little to do with them and vice versa. The girls are being totally nasty and neither deserves anyone's serious consideration as human beings, much less "victor" in the competition. If Robert could somehow snag the third leg and then win the tiebreaker, JUSTICE would be served AND we'd have an interesting show.

Birthday Info: Last year, I didn't share my birthday info. This year I did. This year's birthday was a heck of a lot cheerier with greetings. No one has to wish anyone a happy birthday if they don't want to. Just as no one has to express an opinion if they don't want to.

I daresay (yes, I do daresay) that not one of us begrudges any one individual's rights to privacy in any way, shape or form. Share what you will, and let us share what we will.

My lunch: Smoked turkey on an onion roll with lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Plus a bag of lightly salted Kettle Chips.

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 01:14 PM PST

Jrand53, well now, that's a long story.....

I am at that awkward age where I am too young to play Tateh, and too old to play Younger Brother. (In truth, I could have played either, and I was told by many people that I was the front-runner for both roles, but the director chose to cast people whose *actual* age was the same as the *character's* age, which is his wont.) I was asked to audition for Houdini, but declined, favouring instead to perform in the ensemble and play a number of small roles, including Harry K. Thaw and Charles S. Whitman.

It's an unusual production, in that I think the ensemble is actually stronger than the leads. Not that the three principals (Coalhouse, Mother, Tateh) aren't talented, but they are out-classed by the secondary characters and ensemble.

I am told that the costumes (and the Model T) will be coming from the National Tour production, and I have the most costume changes of anyone in the cast.

While I'm here - Joi Lansing reminds me. I bet you can help out there - I've been trying to think for ages of the name of a very curvaceous blonde B-movie actress in the Joi Lansing mold. Once way back in my very young acting days I "doubled" for her on a TV show - some American series shot in Canada about a police surgeon played by Sam somebody. This extremely well built blonde actress was the guest star and for some reason they picked me to be her double. Believe me, all we had in common was hair color - and she was much blonder - and older - than I. (I also had a small role as a nurse. I still have the RN badge I wore on my uniform because they had my real name on it, followed by RN. The only legit profession I ever had. ...I thought I was doing a fabulous acting job as the concerned yet efficient nurse because the star kept staring at me all during my so called scene. He finally came over as we wrapped and said, "You can see right through your uniform...") At any rate I was totally proud to have doubled for this bombshell - only I can't think of her name, haven't been able to for years. So what the hell good is that? Any ideas? Could've been Marie X...

I've already explained this to BK in a private email, but...

If you look closely, you will see that the original emoticon that I used was "winking" (i.e. I used a semi-colon, rather than a colon). That is intended to be construed as "kidding".

Anytime I use an emoticon, I make sure it is winking, so that people know I am kidding, whether he is smiling or frowning.

So now you know. ;-)

do you do the wink? Oh, is it a
semi-colon? ;-) Is that right?

Posted by bk @ 09/15/2003 02:29 PM PST

BK, you are a most excellent winker ;-)

Well, I'm off to Sociology class but wanted to make my contribution to 200 posts before I left. Let's go for it! Woot!

Emily--sorry to hear about the job interview! Consolation vibes~~~~~ Also, many painless vibes to Phil ~~~~

TCB--I remember reading about Marie McDonald in some scandalous tome like Hollywood Babylon. They called her "The Body," to which she responded, "Well, a gal doesn't get very far in Hollywood being known as "The Brain!""

Posted by Maya @ 09/15/2003 02:35 PM PST

Oh...another Marie McDonald quote I remember.

"In Hollywood, it's easier to find a husband than it is an agent."

Posted by Maya @ 09/15/2003 02:36 PM PST

Thanks BK. Had you heard the Blood Sweat & Tears version of "Naked Man" before? I love the voice of David Clayton Thomas.
The worm in the apple could be a worry!

Posted by Tom from Oz @ 09/15/2003 02:38 PM PST

Hadn't heard the BS&T
version. I've always liked his
voice.

Posted by bk @ 09/15/2003 02:41 PM PST

I don't think it was Marie MacDonald...the series must have been DR SIMON LOCKE starring Sam Groom, but I can't find a complete episode/guest star listing anywhere.

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 02:42 PM PST

Sarah: Thank you, dahling. I had two shots at it...I'm glad one of them was usable. :-) Ha! It still makes me laugh. I sound like a total goof.

I think I'm going to take a brief repose. I'm feeling a bit tired.

Phil: Good luck with the wisdom teeth. I need to have mine out, but I'm too afraid (and too broke) to have it done.

Posted by Jason @ 09/15/2003 02:46 PM PST

Oh, I'm sorry, Jrand I thought it was Panni who had posted that.

Posted by TCB @ 09/15/2003 02:56 PM PST

It wasn't Marie McDonald, DR's - she would've been too old. Maybe it wasn't a Marie at all and my mind is playing tricks on me. BTW - The title of "Simon Locke" was changed to "Police Surgeon" once they switched to shooting in Canada (I just looked that up.)It's now become my mission in life to track this down. I'll set some of my Canadian producer friends on it.
I'm now going to meet an actress friend for lunch. We haven't seen each other in a couple of years. She asked me if I was still blonde; I asked her if she was still African-American (pc, DR's). In case you're interested - I am, so is she. Some things, comfortingly, never change.

A belated happy birthday to you Dave, and someone had an anniversary..was that Laura? Anyway to whomever it was Happy A'day!

BK, the mention of Joi Lansing reminds me of one of my first "BK questions of the the day" in which I asked your favorite June Kenney, Allison Hayes, and Joi Lansing (my 3 top favorite actresses) film or TV roles. Well, you answered about Allison and June, but said you had to think about Joi's...so have you thought? Is it HILLBILLY'S IN A HAUNTED HOUSE? Or maybe her role in HOT CARS?? Or perhaps her numerous appearances on LOVE THAT BOB or THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES?? If not then it could have been her starring role in BIGFOOT or her small role in QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE. Think man think, which is it!!!

By the way I am most partial to Ms. Lansings wonderful scopitones where she belts out some wonderful tunes, namely WEB OF LOVE, wherein she sings and frolicks with headhunters and finds herself strapped to a giant spider web in addition to, for some inexplicable reason, sitting inside a giant bird cage decked out in feathers.

Posted by MBarnum @ 09/15/2003 03:08 PM PST

Ok, I'm not crazy (well about this, anyway) it was Panni who wrote that. Jrand, you were just trying to solve the puzzle. Now I have it correct.

Posted by TCB @ 09/15/2003 03:14 PM PST

LOL!

MY favorite Joi Lansing was an I LOVE LUCY episode where she plays a model in Florida who is going to be in a bathing suit contest Ricky and Fred are supposed to judge.

"I get such a boot out of it when you sing BabaLu..." says Joi. And a few minutes later Lucy does a great Joi impression ending with..."I'd like to give HER a boot!" LOL

Has anyone heard from Jose? Maybe DR (and lurker) Pam S has found him.
I shall return in about 8 hours to check the responses!

Posted by Tom from Oz @ 09/15/2003 03:33 PM PST

Yes, I've heard from Jose, as we are trying to make arrangements to get together when he swings through L.A. Here's an excerpt from an e-mail I received from him last Friday:

Yes - the "working vacation" has finally turned into "work". Period. Ah, well. We're all still having fun, and I'm having a great time going various places on Universal Studios Japan's dime! I'm currently in Orlando, FL, and we leave for New York on Monday. -Then Chicago, then LA...

Posted by Jay @ 09/15/2003 03:47 PM PST

This has to be a world record! I am already done with my sociology class, having finished my exam. I feel pretty good about it.

Good to know that Jose is well! I was wondering myself where in Tarnation he was. I guess he doesn't have a laptop?

Jason--you sounded adorable on the Song of the New Wine track, and I can't wait to receive your tapes! You should be getting mine within a few days :)

Posted by Maya @ 09/15/2003 04:18 PM PST

Maya: Are you still stuck on your crap computer? I need to mindlessly babble to you! I have lots to talk about and I may forget it by them time you're back on a normal PC.

I was made fun of today for speaking with an Oklahoma accent. Inbetween classes (luckily), my cell phone rang, and it was a friend who lives in OK, trying to get me in trouble. I talked to her for a mere five minutes before walking into English, and in that five minutes, my accent had returned. Now, I don't mind it, but the kids in this class had never heard me speak any other way. I was off saying "Y'all" and other various and sundry things, and everyone laughed, much to my dismay. But it eventually became funny and I myself was laughing. I'll talk like this for the rest of the day.

So you now have "Okie Sarah" on board, y'all, watch out. Go Sooners!

Posted by Sarah @ 09/15/2003 04:30 PM PST

Boomer!... (waiting for Sarah's response)

Posted by Jason @ 09/15/2003 04:55 PM PST

SOONER!

I'm a Sooner born
and a Sooner bred
and when I die
I'll be Sooner dead!

Rah Oklahoma, O K U!

-VERY condensed version :)-

I love Hollywood "quotes" - among my favorites...when the inimitable Jayne Mansfield was asked if a girl got ahead in Hollywood quicker by being smart or by being beautiful and Jayne replied:

"Well, of course a girl should have brains, but she doesn't have to go around wearing blankets."

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 05:28 PM PST

Oh and on the TOD - although this album is probably not quite as rare among DR of HHW than the world in general - Dr Kildare Sings, Richard Chamberlain's LP which is really quite good.

Ron -what songs are on the Rydell album?

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 05:29 PM PST

The songs from the score....the LP is in storage...Lord knows what all is on it...but I think he sings all the major songs.

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 09/15/2003 05:36 PM PST

LOL....Bobby Rydell singing ONE BOY would be super, although I imagine he sings ONE GIRL!

HEY! Just found a source for AN UNLOCKED WINDOW on the net! Ordered the DVD for 19.99!! If it comes and if it is good quality, I will let other interested DR's know. Figners crossed, please!

Well, the battle of the computers rages on. I am typing this from the Mac again. My sister found yet another virus on the PC--the lovely creative hacker who came up with this one decided to give it the name of the "S**t Virus." So I may not be able to IM or anything for a while. The thing about the virus though is that it seems to affect the computer intermittently...sometimes I can get online, sometimes I can't. Anyway, I hope we can get this fixed SOON!

Jrand--lol! I always found it funny that Jayne Mansfield supposedly had a genius IQ.

Sorry for the double post!!

Posted by Maya @ 09/15/2003 05:59 PM PST

Maya...yup, and she could play the violin as well.

My WalMart $500 computer is working fine! Of course it is the second one...first one went back. Maya there is a free virus fighter AVG or Grisoft or something that is pretty good at getting rid of stuff and it's free. Do a google search for AVG and check it out.

Posted by Jrand53 @ 09/15/2003 06:31 PM PST

Is it just me, or are there have been way more crazy strong viruses over the past month or so than any time in the past.

So far, my work computer has had sobig and blaster, while my family one was recently flagged for bugbear.

Maya, you should make sure you have a firewall installed. ZoneAlarm offers a free version that works really well. Click on my name for more info.

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/zap_za_grid.jsp

Once you complete their "quiz" click to download the basic zone alarm program. You really won't need the pro and advanced versions.

Thank you guys so much for the help! I've given the name of these anti-virus programs to my little sis, who is far better with computers than I am. She's scary what she can do with computer--graphics, design websites and icons, work with coding...and she's only 16.

Anyway, as soon as we can get the internet back up on the PC she's going to see what she can do and hopefully the S**t virus will be on its not-so-merry way ere long.

If any of you are awaiting e-mails from me, you'll have to wait until AOL fixes its servers - they currently can't send any e-mails other than to AOL addresses. This has been going on all day and it's most annoying.

Are we having a lull? Is that what we are having?

Posted by bk @ 09/15/2003 08:28 PM PST

I have AOL and I never get emails from BK. :-\ Of course, there wouldn't be any real reason for him to email me, so I guess that's alright.

I took a most lovely nap this evening and woke up to realize that I really and truly have no food in my apartment. I had one can of Chef Boyardee Chili Mac left, and I ate it. Good thing I get paid on Thursday.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to swing the audition on Thursday morning or not. My speaking voice is still intact, but my singing voice is in less-than-performable shape, I'm afraid. And, Maya, I'm afraid I have a S**T virus of my own, and not of the computer virus sort. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. If I'm not up to par as of, say, 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, I'll call and let them know that I can't make it to the audition. We'll see what happens.

I get this every year...right around the second week of September. By now its usually turned into a sinus infection, so (knock on wood), I'm in better shape than usual. Pray that it doesn't get worse!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sending good vibes to Jason.
Get well, Jason!
GOOD VIBES
GOOD VIBES
I don't think I have any real obscure albums that are my favorites. I have some obscure albums, but they're definitely not my favorites. Of course I can't remember what any of them are because I have to house-sit for my sister while she's on vaction and I'm not able to be at my home for more than 10 minutes before I have to check on my sister's boyfriend's cat because he went also and then I have to get back to my sister's house because I have to watch her two pets! What an unseemly paragraph. Let's put an end to it right now!
New paragraph...anyway, I feel uncomfortable having to watch three different places because I can't be at all three places for very long and one never knows (do one?--an Ain't Misbehavin' reference) what can happen in the 23 hours and 45 minutes that I'm not there!
Otherwise, I'm glad that the chat is postponed. I can make it tomorrow and I wouldn't have been able to today at all.
Guess who?!?!?!
Greeting from the New Times Square in Old New York! *Mama Bernadette is practically staring at me through my hotel window! ;-)
Orlando was fun, but it was Orlando. It was nice getting to check out Universal Orlando, and I was also able to make it over to Disneyworld for a few hours. -I got to ride Tower of Terror "4" - I LOVE the new variations they've added - truly one of my favorite rides. I also caught the fireworks at Epcot. What a wonderful show - it truly had me in tears, some truly beautiful moments. And the level of music synchronization with the fireworks is sophisticated and awesome. And since attendance was/is down, it was easy to get some prime viewing space around the lake. Back at Universal's Islands of Adventure, the attendance was also down - I actually got in all six major coasters/rides in 45 minutes! -I think I'm still a little dizzy two days later.
Culinarily, the only highlight was a "light meal" at Emeril's in Universal's City Walk. Strangely enough, I thought the appetizer was a little bland, and that the dessert actually needed some more sugar - go figure?!?!?!?! However, I had absolutely no quibbles with the service. Very professional and casual at the same time. I also had "gallery" seating in front of the kitchen - always fun watching your food - and everyone else's being prepared. The service more than compensated for the lack of "BAM!" in my food. Don't get me wrong - the food was very good, but I was just expecting a bit more spark on my palate.
Well... Now I'm in New York City - got in earlier this evening after a delayed flight from Orlando on Song Airlines - formerly Delta Express. A very strange airline/flight - they were selling Song Airline Beach Towels on board - ???? We're at a nice hotel right on Times Square, and we had an exquisite meal at Becco. Truly one of the best Italian meals I've ever had - we all ordered the prix fixe fresh pasta meal - the penne with veal bolognese, and the spinach ravioli in a sage and butter sauce were wonderful! And the $21.95 price tag was a true bargain - especially since the pasta was all you can eat - as well as the nice selection of $20.00 bottles of wine.
Well, it's late, and I have auditions in the morning... I just wanted to check back in finally...
I'm not going to try to catch up on the weeks of posts I've missed up till now... at least not in the next few days. There's just not enough free time in my schedule right now to get it all done. I hope that's all right... However, when i do get a chance to read a day's posts...
Obscure albums... Hmmm... I have a vinyl copy of the re-issue of Working somewhere. CD's: a very afore-mentioned Lambert Wilson CD of show tunes (not to my liking); Eating Raoul OCR - still a guilty pleasure; Matador with Tom Jones - the concept album; and I wish I had a copy of Nefertiti, I remember liking some of it (Michael Nouri was in it if I remember correctly)... and I also regret not buying a copy of Lies & Legends: The Songs of Harry Chapin when I saw the show years ago at Pasadena Playhouse - what a great cast!
Happy Belated Birthday, Dave!
Happy Anniversay, Charles!
-And, once again, A Big Thank You to DRs Tom and Colin from Oz for their hospitality - and food and chocolate! *And I've already started planning a return trip in January... :-)
As François would say... Bonne nuit!
Hi Everyone... I've crawled back out of my hole for a little bit as i've just completed the first weekend of the concept season of a musical two of my good friends wrote, "Atlantis: The Musical" (i'm in the orchestra). www.atlantis-the-musical.com for more information if anyone is interested. Anyway, I was doing some random reading on Bat Boy, and I read that the band for the show was 2 keyboards, bass, guitar and drums, but it had been expanded for the CD. Is this true? Does anyone know what the extra instrumentation was? I'd like to beleive all that sound is coming from the two synths, can anyone advise me either way?
Anyway, I got some stuff done today, sent some mail (to Alfred Hitchcock's daughter), and now I have a recording day tommorow to prepare my folio for application to a creative arts degree.
