"THE SITE THAT WASN'T"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, you won’t believe it. I can barely believe it myself and yet I must because it happened before my very eyeballs. Last night, shortly before midnight, the server which hosts this here site (and several others) malfunctioned. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, for the third time this year the server malfunctioned and this site was not accessible. Now, you know that I strive to keep this site accessible but, I suppose, these things happen. I am told they will happen less once we are moved to the big-boy server in a few weeks. In any case, I will keep these here notes short and sweet rather than long and sour because who knows if anyone will be reading them.

I really do wish this nagging pain in my lower back would just get going, would just vamoose, would just amscray, but no, it is hanging on like an unwanted party guest.

Last night I dreamed I was at Manderley. In my dream I was in court dealing with the old bad business. My lawyer was antagonizing everyone and finally he took his pants off and exposed himself and then began drooling and screaming and he was carried off to the lunatic asylum. That did not bode well for a good outcome, but luckily a few moments later in dreamtime my new lawyer, who looked like Richard Mulligan or, in fact, may have been Richard Mulligan, was doing a great job, everyone loved him and it became quickly apparent that I would prevail and win the case. Then I woke up.

Wasn’t that a lovely dream? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have no idea if anyone will be reading these here notes or not.

To read or not to read, that is the question. Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous servers I know not, I care not, I just want the fershluganah site back up and running. What am I, Shakespeare all of a sudden?

Don’t be a stranger this weekend – we’re going to have lots and lots of surprises do don’t miss out on them. That is, presuming the site is up and running. And don’t forget to check out the new entry to Juliana’s Journal. We are using this week and next to catch up and get almost current. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must continue entering the second phase of fixes, I must sit on my couch like so much fish, I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs and I must do errands which need doing. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, two volumes of film music by Georges Delerue all done for the films of Philipe de Broca. Quite lovely. Also a newly released CD of Bernard Herrmann’s western TV scores for CBS. DVD, Mr. Blake Edwards’ The Tamarind Seed, one of the few Blake movies I’ve never seen. I’m forty minutes in and it’s quite handsome to see but quite turgid to watch. It does feature Miss Julie Andrews and Mr. Omar Sharif, who are both quite handsome people, and it does feature a beautiful quite handsome score by Mr. John Barry. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely posts, shall we? At least, I hope we can have loads of lovely posts.

Addendum: It is now twenty-two hours later and we are hoping the site will work for at least the next two days, until Mr. Mark Bakalor gets to a computer. He got this up with the aid of a tech while he was en route to Northern California. I can only say this: It will never ever happen again. He is switching us over to our new server at the beginning of the week and that server has backup systems in place. To say that I was apoplectic all day would be a vasty understatement, oh, yes, a vasty understatement. However, we did not lose a day and that is what I was most worried about. Okay, we have an hour and forty-five minutes to get to a hundred posts. Go! Also, I'll put up tomorrow's notes a bit later, like tenish.

Test...test...1...2...3...4...

I'm seeing BOY FROM OZ and WICKED tomorrow. I'll have a full report, of course.

At last! My Day is complete again!

This was the day from utter hell. I had terrible withdrawal symptoms and also didn't get calls I was supposed to get and just a poopy day. But now, all is well with the world. Only ninety-six more posts to go. Puuush.

Boy, I sure needed my HHW
fix!

... and just minutes before I'm
off!

there's a "lord" after all! ;- )

Posted by François @ 10/10/2003 10:41 PM PST

Yay! HHW withdrawal over!

It's really late here but I wanted to check in. Just got back from seeing a production of Hay Fever that was quite good.

Well that's my contribution towards 100. Goodnight everyone! BK, I'm sure tomorrow will be better for you!

Posted by Maya @ 10/10/2003 10:49 PM PST

I sure miss Richard Mulligan. He's the definitive General Custer, as far as I'm concerned, and I also loved him as the Blake-Edwards-type-character in "S.O.B."

I haven't scanned his whole filmography yet, but did he ever play a lawyer in real life, or does he only do that when we're all fast asleep?

Posted by Sigerson Holmes @ 10/10/2003 10:56 PM PST

I was wondering why you were errant, BK, and it turns out it was the site and not you! What a relief!

I'll be posting the next chapter of the Tails tomorrow, assuming that Mr. Mark Bakalor can keep things running from afar. If he cannot, I suggest taking away his pointy hat and pantaloon priveledges.

As for what has been in my DVD player of late, I've been kid-flicking. The Lion King is a sparkling set, although I would have thought more attention would have been given to the stellar cast of voices in the film. And my favorite cheapskate, Der Brucer, and I found a twofer set of Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2, which have nice bonus features and should keep the grandlads amused when we get relocated to Delaware. The two films together cost an easy $17 at Sam's Club; a quick check at WalMart gave the price for the two films as $14 EACH! And that's not mousefeed, kids!

Dear DR Maya, you must tell us more about Hay Fever when you get a chance. My one and only appearance on stage was in a college production of the play, as the irrepressable Simon. Fortunately, the rest of the show was quite good.

Last night I had composed a post in Word, copied it into "The Unseemly Comment Box," previewed a few times, made a few changes (this actually took me more time than I thought it would) and when I hit "Post," the site went down! I'm now sure that it was just a coincidence, but I thought that I had broken it! When the site didn't come back up this morning, I nearly panicked (but not enough to e-mail anyone and confess that I thought that it might have been my fault). Anyway, I'm glad that everything is up and running, although it looks like that there are some days missing from the Archives.

So, for the topic of the day:

In my CD player at work: "Couldn't Be Hotter" the brand spanking new (and live!) CD by The Manhattan Transfer!! There are some groups that have been around for forever and then there's TMT. The group is celebrating it's 31s anniversary together and they just keep getting better and better. They sound so good! The sound quality of the recording is great, the packaging is wonderful (but I hate the "digipak" jewel boxes...they get damaged so easily), they take great pictures and they still sound fabulous! Can you tell that I'm a fan? I just can't get enough of them.

Anyway, when I got home, two new CDs were waiting in the mail for me: Brownstone: The Musical with Liz Callaway, Brian D'Arcy James, Debbie Gravitte, Rebecca Luker and someone I've never heard of, Kevin Reed. Also waiting at home from England was a signed CD of the new production of Anything Goes that I got from Dress Circle (.co.uk). I'll listen to both of them this weekend.

Well, welcome back BK AND HHW!

"The group is celebrating its 31st anniversary...." Oops.

There were probably more e-mails than usual exchanged between worried Kimlets today than is usual.
At least the day is not lost entirely:
I shall be watching "A Mighty Wind" this evening. I am looking forward to the "extras".
Today's play list has been changing frequently as I have been "compiling". Thus I have listened to Dusty Springfield, Pat Boone, Johnny Horton,Brenda Lee, Marty Robbins, Kiki Dee, Linda Ronstadt, Gene Pitney, Creedence Clearwater Revival, roberta flack and Gary Pucket.(and many others). I have also played Stevie Wonder's "Greatest Hits" 2cd.
Tomorrow I shall be attending a Record Collector's Fair. I shall of course post at some stage during the day.
Should I mention that the compilation also included Donny Osmond and the Royal Guardsmen? (Not together).

OK - It's 3:30AM on the East Coast of the United States, and I'm wide awake.... Again!!! At least I don't have to do anything tomorrow... Well anything that would require me to get up at a "normal" hour. I do plan to do some cooking - baking and cooking. I've been home for a week now, and just tonight, I finally cooked something on the stove - well, warmed up is more like it since it was a can of soup - Campbell's Manhattan Clam Chowder. And since I'm about to start a gig in a few days, I might as well get in my cooking time while I can. *Even when I was back for those few days after getting back from Australia, I ended up eating out each meal. I just didn't feel like cooking. ???? So now I'm about to go on a cooking jag... and I kind of have to too. I went grocery shopping today and bought baby-back pork ribs, a whole chicken and a package of chicken thighs. Oh, and a package of frozen chicken breast tenderloins. I guess I'll be cooking and freezing - it will be nice to have some "real food" waiting for me when I get back on my off Mondays. And then the baking too - definitely the peanut butter cookies, and maybe even the green tea pound cake (I finally found the right kind of matcha).

-Oops got sidetracked reading my newspapers on-line... It's now 4:15!!!

Goodnight!

Goodnight.

Francois, you've probably already listened, but just wanted to mention Friday Night is Music Night and it's NELSON RIDDLE! Great program.

Posted by Ben @ 10/11/2003 04:52 AM PST

Yesterday I got my Neal Hefti HARLOW soundtrack on the official CD release.

Oh was I suprised. The first track was a chorus version of the theme 'Lonely Girl' - NOT the lovely main title theme music from the soundtrack. I checked the label and both are called Original Score albums.

Hmmmmmmmmm....was I upset? Yes, I was. That is the reason I bought the thing, so I would have the lovely main title. And what do you know? It was track number 9! Listed just as 'Lonely Girl.' And there are two chorus versions of the song and none by Mr Bobby Vinton who sang the theme over the end credits of the movie.

And as Miss Carroll Baker said, Joseph E. Levine would not honor her contract...she insisted she wanted "Harlow" directed by Carol Reed and be an outside production...."I have a contract," said Carroll. "I piss on that contract," said Mr Levine. "I want the movie done this way," said Carroll. "I piss on this movie," said Mr. Levine. "I am the star," said Carroll. "I piss on you," said Mr. Levine.

And so, wrote Miss Baker, in the end, he pissed on the contract, he pissed on the movie, and he pissed on me.

She is quite the philosopher and I recommend her autobiography BABY DOLL to anyone who hasn't read it!

Let me join the other whewers. Whew!

Thursday night we were invited to a benefit dinner for the Smile Theatre Company, which is run by Canada's cabaret duo of Tom Kneebone and Dinah Christie. The Smile company brings original productions - all rich in Canadian content - to nursing homes in Ontario. It was nice to see and hear Tom and Dinah. But did everyone have to refer to them as living legends? (They are, of course.)

Keep forgetting little things (I'll do my best to get this up to 100 before BK gets up :-)

I went to Footlight on my lunch hour yesterday and lo and behold (and behold and lo), what was sitting there on the new releases shelf? Well, I'll tell you. It was a brand, spanking new copy of Jeepers Creepers (for $21.95). I thought it was only available at Scarlet Street for the first 6 months. As much as I like Footlight, I do think their prices can be a bit high. $17.95 for the new Bette Midler Rosemary Clooney album??? It's eleven tracks. I know some of that price comes from the recording company, but how can they (the recording industry) complain about losing sales when they charge such outrageous prices. Oh, well. Back to work again.

Posted by Ben @ 10/11/2003 05:02 AM PST

Bette Middler new cd. She singsa duet with Barry mannilow (slow Boat to China) and Linda Ronstadt (Sisters) I thought it would be more interesting if she dueted with Manilow on Sisters. Also listening to Maurren McGovern's Bergman tribute album. (forgot the name)

And also reading Ted Chaplin's book about Follies

DVD I have house guests for the weekend and showed the Sordid Lives. They never saw it and they loved it. I highly recommend this film.

And thats about it.

The bachelor party was the greatest bachelor party in the long and checkered history of the bachelor party. (That's a sentence with three bachelor parties.) The talent on display was absolutely amazing. My friend Melissa did a brilliant job of putting it together, and a good time was had by all. In the future, people are predicting, every groom will have a bachelor party just like mine.

I invited no men, just my closest female friends, who each performed a song (one was a quintet) appropriate to send me off into matrimony: A Call From the Vatican, Big Spender, Everybody's Girl, Toucha-Toucha Touch Me ... An ex-girlfriend of mine (whom I'd NOT proposed to) revealed that from waiting around for that plain little band of gold, a person can develop a cold.

BK - Hope the back pain's vamoosed and that Richard Mulligan is working hard. Speaking of RM - I love Katherine Helmond (and Remy Zaken) as Baby Jane. In fact, I love all of Jeepers Creepers - congratulations to everyone.

Jeepers has been on the CD player a lot, but at the moment it's Valmouth (thank you, Michael Shayne) - which always brings a smile to my face.

On the stove? Oatmeal with dates.

Posted by Dan-in-Toronto @ 10/11/2003 05:44 AM PST

Dan: Don' think I ever mentioned this butL I bought Valmouth because I misread the title. I thought it was a musical version of Valmont (or Liaisons Dangereuses aka Dangerous Liaisons)

Posted by Michael Shayne @ 10/11/2003 06:18 AM PST

Michael:

No, I didn't know that (Valmouth/Valmont). I bought the LP of Sandy Wilson's Valmouth when I was in England a zillion years ago - and the CD brings back many happy memories.

I also have Sandy Wilson's Divorce Me Darling (LP), which is every bit as peppy as The Boy Friend.

Whoa! Where'd ya go? Panic time around this household. I thought I'd been BANNED forever from this here fershluganah site. Whad I do(?) I asked myself. Could it have been some barb I wrote about Ahnold? Or was it some blatant advertising about my activities? Or perhaps it was a movie I recommended that set ol' Guy off! T'was a puzzlement! Even my missive to bruce at hhw.com came back from my ISP warning me of "fatal errors." I wrung my hands and furrowed my brow as I cried, "Come back Little Sheba, come back!"

And now this morning...all is calm...all is bright. I'm back in good graces and all is forgiven. Whew! Whadda relief! I think it's time to restore my equilibrium with my meditation CDs. Ohmmmmmmmm...

On the player at work: The Great American Songbook

In the car: one of my own compilation CD's: I heard Rupert Holmes singing, "Hi, Honey I'm Home," Guy Haines singing "Terminal," Liz Calloway singing "A Place Called Home," Peter Cincotti singing "Rainbow Connection" and Peggy Lee singing "He Needs Me" and "Sugar."

NOW, I'm just on the second track of "Jeepers Creepers."

I have the tickets to see Jason Graae, KAREN MORROW and Paige O'Hara in my hands! ! ! The program is called, "Hello, Jerry!" and is an evening of Mr. Herman's music and lyrics. Can't wait until next Saturday night!

And, our family recieved most excellent news, health-wise, so thanks to all the H/K's for their great good thoughts and prayers! ! !

Yep, I sure did worry when I couldn't get any access to the site yesterday. Then, I wondered if maybe you were changing over yesterday, and that was why. Oh, well, glad it's back.

Media check from yesterday:

CD - UNSUNG SONDHEIM
VHS - Thursday night's WILL & GRACE
DVD - HELLO, DOLLY!

BTW, who can tell me who dubbed Marianne McAndrews' voice in DOLLY? I will ask all weekend in case these (here) notes get archived before the whole group of knowledgeable H/K's get a chance to read them and answer.

So very glad about the good-health news.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend (Monday). Finding this site and the folks who are part of it is something for which I'm very thankful.

Yesterday with no HHW I had to spend all day at work working (but at least I got a few things done that I had been procrastinating about).

I hate Footlight Records. Last Friday their website listed a bunch of new releases that were scheduled for Tuesday. I called them and was told they were on the site but would not be available until Tuesday. Tueaday I stopped there and was told they all sold out over the weekend and on Monday (a day they were supposed to be closed!). Yes their prices are high, but sometimes it is easier to stop there when they (usually) have everything than to go to three or four places each with only one or two of what I'm looking for.

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 10/11/2003 08:16 AM PST

Good morning! Here I am at work, and it's actually pretty busy this morning, but I now have a break to post.

When I saw that forbidden message the other day, I was a little worried too. I don't think the site has been down so long as long as I've been an H/K. But BKs at his computer, all's right with the world!

Noel--what an awesome bachelor party it sounds like you had! It made me think of what my ideal bachelorette party would be like if I ever get married. Who needs Chippendales? I'd want a bunch of cute tenors and baritones singing to me!

TD--I'm so glad that the health situation has gotten better! And have a great time at the Morrow/Graae concert!

SWW--That's cool that you played Simon Bliss in Hay Fever! What a fun part! That was your only time acting? An old friend of mine actually played the part in the production I saw...it was a fairly well-done production by the Castaways Repertory Theatre, a semi-professional local troupe. It was my first time seeing this play, but I hugely enjoyed it. So witty, and I loved the way the Bliss family (especially the mom) just lived their life as if they were always in front of an audience.
The cast was pretty strong, I thought. The girl who played Jackie had great facial expressions and the woman who played the mother reminded me sooo much of Harriet Harris somehow.

Well, back to work!

Sorry to hear about the back problems and the server problems.

I have the feeling a little extra potassium might help the back. Sounds silly, I know, but it is very good for your muscles. It might help your back heal quicker.

I know it works on Charly Horses which is like a pulled muscle--my Mom had them almost every night until I got her to take a potassium tablet before bed. She almost never gets them now.

I'm kinda into herbs/vitamins. I'd rather take something natural whenever possible. I know some of them are helping me.

I installed the McAfee Virus Scan from an offer I received on line which is going to keep me safe from all the nasty little bugs out there on line and now my e-mail won't work right. I can't send anything out and have a devil of a time getting to my messages. I have to go to mail2web.com to get them. Sigh.

I have to wonder if it's worth being "protected" or not.

Well, I must be off--things to do, places to go, people to annoy and the new Meat Loaf CD to buy! Yeeah!

First td, happy and relieved your family had good news.

DVD 8 Mile
CD player is still broken but you did remind me to turn on windows media. Now listening to Cinama Paradiso-Josh Groban

Noel, your bachelor party sounded wonderful. I never did get the point of a raunchy party, especially just because it is expected of you.

Now Car Wash is playing-I don't know why Keith likes that song (he set this up). I quickly changed to Perry Como's "Catch a Falling Star"

Oh No!! I left October 4th, since my return I was not able to catch up on the Bonnie and Clyde saga until yesterday. Yea, today we are reconnected and Keith is working outside so I have the computer all to myself. I go into the archives-only to find they are blank after October 1st.

It's back! How wonderful! John's back! Not wonderful! Take potassium, like Danise said, it helps!

I JUST woke up from a very long and deep sleep, and I feel splendid. Besides HHW being lost forever, yesterday was actually a VERY good day!

I had all of my easy classes, plus a Drama Club meeting that took me out of Study Hall, and... *drumroll please!*

I Made All County Chorus!!!!

*Grin* And all of the people who I had been hoping would also make it indeed were on the list, so it's bound to be a bunch of fun :). After that little announcement happened, she went on to tell us that the auditions for All-District Chorus will be the 4th of next month, and gave us the audition song. It's "Choose Something Like A Star". We sang this last year in my Treble Choir class, so I already know it, but it goes up SO high for the Soprano I part, I think to a G. I need to start practicing more.

And then I had my first babysitting job in about 2 weeks, a 1 year old boy (who has just figured out walking, and doors), and a 3 year old girl (who has just mastered the art of crying on cue). Stressful as it was, I had a blast. Little kids are so much more fun that kids above age 6.

I must have missed these notes last night. Every time I clicked on the HHW bookmarked link, it brought up a page that could let me read "Hey, the site worked! They must have installed Apache whatever!" in about 12 different languages. Weird.
