A-yup, first post! I'd dance, but Bonnie is asleep at my feet and still sore from her operation, so I shan't disturb her. (Isn't that a lovely word, shan't?)
The obvious worst possible Charity would be Harvey Fierstein. He simply cannot dance. But dwelling on the obvious is tacky, so let's move on.
Let's instead go for Sweet Charity, the "I'm going to lose all my credibility as a conservative, but these guys are wackos" casting:
Charity: Ann Coulter
Oscar: Bill O'Reilly
Nickie & Helene: Dr. Laura Schlessenger & Andrea Sheldon Lafferty
Herman: the Rev. Louis Sheldon
Vittorio: Alan Keyes (for a bit of variety)
Big Daddy: the Rev. Fred Phelps.

BK -
I can understand your bleary neck and aching eyes. Have you ever prepared and entered an index? Count your blessings. And, of course, accept my congratulations on getting the task done.
As for Sweet Charity, how about Eartha Kitt in the title role?
Off to NYC this afternoon. Will try to check in on HHW.

Buy EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE!
Get some rest Mr BK! Exciting news about TFNM! Maybe someone somewhere has the original elements and outtakes from ATTACK OF THE FIFTY FOOT WOMAN and Mr Jacques Marquette will do a commentary on a new DVD release!
SWEET CHARITY - The Academy Award winning Stage Version:
Charity - Helen Hunt
Oscar - Nicholas Cage
Nickie & Helene - Marisa Tomei & Mira Sorvino
Vittorio - Roberto Begnini
Big Daddy - Kevin Spacey

Good morning! -BK, did you post these notes after your marathon proofing session? It's kind of "early" for me right now, and I imagine it was/is early for you too.
As for Sweet Charity casting:
Big Daddy - Gary Coleman
Vittorio - James Gandolfini (although... hmmm...???) or here's where I'd put Harvey Fierstein
Nikki & Helene - Courtney Cox Arquette and/or Lisa Kudrow and/or Jennifer Aniston
Oscar - Kevin Costner
Charity - Melanie Griffith (although... hmmm... I bet her name has been bandied about the Weissler's offices), with Kathie Lee Gifford as her standby, "matinee Charity".
-Not bad for only being up for about 20 minutes if I may say so myself... ;-)
I'll check back in later.

Hmmm... Posts? Early posts?
As for BK's query from yesterday regarding the dip in the number of posts lately... well, post-site-crash... I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the "number" of the day's post seems to have gotten reset. Usually, if I post more than once in a day, I just take advantage of the auto-complete feature in IE. As soon as I type in "haineshi...", it brings up my history for the past fews day; and I scroll down to the latest/last entry. -In other words, I bypass the main HHW homepage. I noticed "post-crash" that the numbers had rolled back a few. Today's are number 708, but there was already a 708 before the "crash". -So, I know we all said this a few times last week, but maybe it has to do with that ever elusive and mysterious "cache".
-Pardon my babbling and blathering...
But I do find it very strange that today's notes were posted early, and the the usual early posters are nowhere in sight - or on site.

I finally ordered TFNM DVD!
I also got WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, the book that WEL recommended last week. I will read it this weekend!
THE BOY FROM OZ opens tonight, right? Or is that THE BOY FROM OH ZEE?
Tomorrow is Friday!!! Where is DR Jason? Hmmmmmmm....he must be working very hard.

OK - Now I have to ask the question...
Where in tarnation is everyone?
*Is it possible we have a "double" site again? hmmm...

Well, someone has to suggest it and it may as well be me:
Carol Channing as Charity.

What a lovely surprise to find new
notes up! I suppose that finishing
Kritzer Time is a reason to celebrate
with early posts!
Well, I suppose that I should counter
DR SWW (whom I so successfully
baited last night ;) ) with my "I'll lose
all credibility as a liberal" list.
Charity: Hilary Clinton (or is that with
two "L"'s?)
Oscar: Howard Dean
Nicky and Helene: Diane Feinstein
and Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Herman: Dennis Kucinich
Vittorio: Michael Moore
Daddy: Reverend Jesse Jackson
(And yes, a few of these are
examples of willful ignorance, or at
least severely bad manners.)

Casting for Sweet Charity
Damn, I am too slow. My first choice for Charity would have been Melanie Griffith, but Jose beat me to it. So.....
Charity - Kelly Ripa
Oscar - Rick Schroeder
Nickie and Helene - Roseanne and Wanda Sykes
Vittorio - Fred Willard
Big Daddy - (A bit of stunt casting) Pat Robertson

Jrand --- you will love WHERE THE TRUTH LIES. It's the kind of book where there are twists and turns on every few pages, right up to the final sentence. It is amazing that this book was written by the same person who wrote DROOD for Broadway, created "Remember WENN" for television, produced records for Babs in the 70s, and is now developing DORIAN GREY as a musical. What versatility!
Based on the recent workshop, how about Jane Krakowski for CHARITY? I don't know how the show would be, but the stories of the fights and arguements at rehearsal would be wonderful.
Did anyone see the AVENUE Q ad in today's New York Times? In honor of Hugh Jackman's opening tonight, the ad features AVENUE Q's Rod, the closeted gay puppet as The Boy From the ClOZet!
By the way... am I the only person not interested in seeing BOY FROM OZ? I've never seen Hugh Jackman in a movie (only hosting the Tony Awards) and while I would like to see him in a show, I really can't stand Peter Allen. I first saw him when he and his "brother" were Judy's opening act and really did not care for him. Nothing he did in his later career made me change my mind, and the thought of a whole evening of his songs is not my idea of an entertaining way to spend an evening. And has anyone noticed the photo of Mr. Jackman dressed as Mr. Allen that has appeared in most of the ads looks more like K.D. Lang than Peter Allen?

Hello! Just finished my Speech exam, and I think I did rather well on it, so I am in a peachy mood. :)
BK--congrats on finishing the editing for Kritzer Time (as an English tutor, I KNOW how aggravating it can be to deal with dangling participles and all that fun stuff) and for finding the new TFNM materials!
I think a new special edition, bonus-packed DVD would be the cat's meow! And I hope you feel better soon!
Jrand--Do you have any pics of you as Mordred? I'd love to see pics of you looking all evil, hehe!
Wow, some truly nightmarish casts of Sweet Charity have been assembled so far, and I don't know if I can do any better...but here's my attempt!
Charity: Anna Nicole Smith
Nickie and Helene: J. Ho and Pink
Vittorio: Joe Pesci
Big Daddy: P. Diddy
Oscar: Carrot Top
You know, the though just occured to me that Antonio Banderas would be a great Vittorio in the revival. That is, if he isn't sick of playing sexy Italian film stars with trouble comitting, hehe.

I guess I would have liked THE BOY FROM OZ more with an original score. Allen's music doesn't do anything for me.
And if I remember him correctly from Television appearances, the person today who most reminds me of him is Quentin Tarentino! LOL.
AVENUE Q - what does everyone think of the CD? I of course have not seen the show, but do you think the CD is good?
Posted by JRand53 @ 10/16/2003 09:27 AM PST
Talk about a leap of faith -- there isn't enough greasepaint and no filter strong enough to make Channing look remotely tantalizing as a "dance hall girl"
It would be an act of charity for anyone to "dance" with her as Charity.
: )

Herman in SWEET CHARITY is the manager of the Fandango who leads "I Love to Cry at Weddings" (Stubby Kaye in the movie, I think John Henry Wheeler on Broadway but I may be wrong).
I loved AVENUE Q but thought it would lose something on CD. I was wrong. Even without seeing the puppets it's a fun score very well performed. Sometime when I have guests over I'm going to put it in my CD changer along with a CD of "Sesame Street" songs, press random, and see if anyone notices. By the way, for an interesting take on the AVENUE Q CD, check out Peter Fillichia's column from Monday 10/13 at Theatremania.Com.
By the way, the "disclaimer" that Q is not authorized by Henson or the "Sesame Street" producers is in even larger print in the CD booklet than in the Playbill® or the ads. Do you DRs think that is to prevent a lawsuit or to attract more attention (and sell more tickets) to the show?
Posted by William E. Lurie @ 10/16/2003 09:41 AM PST
The reason I am no longer in NINE is "I want to make sure that I have enough time to prepare so that I can deliver the quality of performance as a professional that I demand of myself".

Good afternoon everyone on this rainy and cold yet strangely wonderful afternoon!!!!!!!!!!
I have finished the paper proposal. I have finished the book review. I have finished my mid-term on the Arab-Israeli Conflict.
I am happier than a clam on ecstacy.
Really. :)
Tonight = Survivor. Yippers! I loooooovvveee watching the Morgan tribe lose everything! It is strangely rewarding to be able to think "wow those guys are such idiots." Do I need external validation of my own intelligence, bien sur! :)
I am dying to get that Avenue Q cast album, but amazon.ca stil doesn't have it listed. I wrote customer service a nasty note (in the hopes of a least getting a complimentary gift certificate for my troubles) but got the same response back as Jennifer. Read: "GO BUY IT ON THE FRIGGING US SITE, LOSER".
I would do it too... if it only weren't for customs.
I do not want to have to pay an extra $15-20 on tariffs. Nope. I refuse.
So... MY QUESTION TO ALL DRs:
Do you think I could order the cd through amazon.com using my own billing information, have it sent to one of you Yankee DRs and then have one of you send it here to me, thereby bypassig the direct customs fees? :)
*crosses fingers*
I'd let you burn it for yourself if you wanted... :)

Well after much transcribing, my lovely interview over brunch with Ms. Susan Egan is now available for one and all to read. Susan was quite candid about her career and although some might think I should have edited the conversation down, I felt that much like Juliana's Journal, it provides an amazing look into the mind of someone who is a working performer. Incidently and coincidently - Donald's radio show is outstanding - and one of the topics Susan and I spoke about...

Actually, I am through with THIS stage of the proofing and fixes. One more person does the final go-through, which is why I was pulling these marathons - to get it to her. She wrote me this morning and said she's now leaving town until the end of October and can't do it until then. That is very annoying for a lot of reasons but what can I do? I may, if fact, forego her services this time around. We'll see.
Posted by bk @ 10/16/2003 10:03 AM PST
Thank you, WEL. When I saw the name Herman, I pictured Stubby Kaye, but I still can't put a face on the person that did the role in our production. Of course, it was probably one of those strange casting choices that went hand in hand with casting me as Vittorio. Ha! A Norwegian Italian. And to think, I turned down the role of Bobbby in Company to play that part.
Actually, I can't wait to see The Boy from Oz (although I believe he already posts at this site). I have not seen Mr. Jackman in anything... Wait, let me re-phrase that... I would like to see Mr. Jackman in nothing, however, I have heard the CD and I was quite impressed. Also, regardless of the fact that the real Mr. Allen rubbed me the wrong way, I think it is important that his story (and the stories of all who were lost to AIDS) is not forgotten. I think the fact that a major name, such as Hugh Jackman, agreed to play the role is a very important step forward in keeping Peter Allen's name alive.

You know, maybe Charity should be done on film again. After all, it's one of the few movies that hasn't been remade.
Charity: Jennifer Lopez
Oscar: Ben Affleck
(that much is obvious)
Herman: John Goodman
Vittorio: Vin Diesel
Nickie: Gweneth Paltrow
Helene: Kathy Bates
Daddy Sebastian Brubeck: Sir Ian McKellen

Emily I sent you an email about amazon.com, which will hopefully help you not have to pay customs. I'm sort of a master at this, since I also refuse to pay it.
Any item that is a gift, is not subject to customs fees. So that is why if a DR sends you something and checks off "gift" you will not have to pay fees.
Here is the trick to ordering from amazon.com (i have done it many many times and it has never failed). When you are ordering you have to send it as a gift. So that means that you are the buyer, but someone else's name is listed as the recipient. So you fill at your name and info as the buyer. And then just put in your mom or dad or anyone else at your house's name as the receiver of the gift.
If you don't understand what i'm saying, email me. But it does work.
Now me, I don't like the shipping charges, which is why I'm not buying from amazon.com anymore. They are way too high.
Oh and also, in case customs ever makes a mistake and charges you for a gift, you can easily get your money back (which i have done a couple of times, although not for amazon, that has always worked). If they charge you for a gift, just fill in the documents on the back for a refund. and they will give it to you (i am also an expert at this).
Does anyone wonder why nobody in the US is ever charged customs fees for items sent there? It is extremely bizarre to me that it only works one way.
Posted by Jennifer @ 10/16/2003 10:25 AM PST
Thanks for the link, Craig! Great interview. Susan is so talented. I only wish I could see her Sally before Cabaret closes. I've heard she's one of the best.
I SO want to see Avenue Q, or at least get the OCR too. I was a Sesame Street baby...how can I resist singing, cursing puppets?
TCB--it actually doesn't NOT make sense to have a Norwegian playing an Italian...many Italians are blond after all. It couldn't be any stranger than casting me as a Scotswoman, hehe. Did you ever get around to playing Bobby later, btw?
Posted by Maya @ 10/16/2003 10:25 AM PST
WFO--hahahaha..oh God, the thought of Sir Ian McKellan singing Rhythm of Life is just too insanely funny.

Yes amazon.ca and all other Canadian websites sell American cds. Amazon.ca sells all the other Broadway ones. But Emily was saying that for some reason they do not yet have Avenue Q.
Re: the customs charges. It's hard to explain, since like I said in my other post, it doesn't work both ways (people in the US never have to pay duty for some reason).
Technically any item purchased in the US that is not a gift is subject to a duty charge (GST, our sales tax and a hefty $5 transactions fee). So unless Footlight was kind, and checked off the gift box, Emily would probably have to pay the customs fee there too.
The thing is, it doesn't always happen. The customs people could ignore it, especially if it is a small amount. It is a toss up.
But Emily's best option is doing what I said. Buying from amazon.com and buying it as a gift. I thought i had mentioned this to her before (i'm sorry).
But it should get you the cd no problem.

Phillip - Your casting would give an entirely different meaning to why Oscar leaves Charity.
Actually, Maya, I did end up doing the production of Company (it opened a week after Charity closed), because the guy playing Joanne’s husband left the production by mutual consent. So I got to do the show, and watch my best friend do the role of Bobby, but I never got the chance to do the role myself.

Oh, did we ever have a windy day yesterday, 50 mph, much worse than when we were expecting the hurricane last month.
So bad that a great big oak tree cracked and fell right across the entrance to the MacBeth's 180-foot driveway. Hehe. Lord MacBeth was out there with a chainsaw until way after dark.
Then again, we lost an even bigger oak, 60 feet at least, but it fell back in the forest (and so it didn't make a sound). Didn't seem to have damaged any other trees, and Joe will be out with his own chainsaw, but at least it isn't an emergency.

-Back from the new mall... It was OK. It's another one of those "town center" types - outdoors, courtyards, etc. The major thing that bothered me about the mall - and also about the other new one that opened in Richmond last month - is that it is very geared towards woman. Lots of women's clothing stores, women's shoes stores, upscale childrens' clothing stores, day spas, etc... -And a Nordstrom. Now I understand the basic economic reasoning behind this "slant", but still... Guys do shop. Husbands do shop. Boyfriends do shop. Brothers do shop. We'll see what happens with the inventories and selection of shops as the months go by. -But I did get my final Centennial Collection Bear from Build-A-Bear Workshop, as well as some very cute and funny Halloween cards at Hallmark. So the trip wasn't a total bust.
DR Phil - Cool - you'll be right by Arena if you're going to USCG HQ. -And, actually, when I was in college, I used to work summers at USCG HQ. And my brother is currently stationed there now too. Maybe we could do lunch if your schedule coincides with my rehearsal. -Of course, the eating choices in that area are disappointingly spare... But I still love the beef patties from Negril. And there's always just buying some seafood right off the boats on the waterfront. -And the restaurant in the Channel Inn isn't too bad either. E-mail me your contact info.

Jennifer - I didn't ask Emily if there were any websites that sold CDs... I asked here if there were any stores... you know, a big building where you go in, pick out what you want and then pay for it (without any shipping or customs fees) and take it with you. I'm not sure where in Canada Emily lives, but I would imagine that there would be some shopping area near her that sold CDs.
By the way, I thought Charles Busch's partner (I forget his name) did the best he could with UNCLE MAME considering the complexity of the subject matter. Edward Tanner (aka Patrick Dennis, Virginia Rowens and a couple of other names) wrote some of the funniest books of his period, but his personal life was as interesting as some of the fictional characters he created. I don't think he was a very happy man which the book showed. Since there probably won't be any other biographies of him, this is the best you're going to get.

DR William: on the behalf of Emily, we do have stores. However, let me not even go into the awful selection of music they have in these stores. Trust me, musicals are underrepresented and even when they are there, they are usually about 10 dollars more than what we can get online just because they are "unpopular".

I am feeling a bit better now. I've taken the book to Kinko's to get a few copies made, including one for the final proofing. The others are going to the folks who've said they'll blurb the book (presuming they like it, of course).
The things I most hate doing: Fixing dangling participles - the obvious ones, sure, fix 'em, but there are just times when it sounds and looks better and gets the point across without sounding arch. I'm all about "voice" and fixing some of these things "properly" just sounds awful to me. So, certain rules I bend. Another thing I hate are too many commas, because one writes in a certain rhythm and one wants the reader to read it in the rhythm in which it was written. So, I put them where absolutely necessary, but some I leave out on purpose.
Another thing I hate is "number agreement". There are times when it just sounds better to say, "no one threw their hat higher" rather than "no one threw his or her hat higher". I gather there has been some loosening of this rule in recent years, and I'm all for it.

Another thing I hate are lulls. For example, we are currently having a lull and I hate it. I'm just sitting here relaxing, and I need reading matter for my mental delectation, don't you know?
Jrand, your DVD is on its way.

MGM's SWEET CHARITY:
Charity - Elizabeth Taylor
Oscar - Mickey Rooney
Nikki/Helene - Ann Miller, Angela Lansbury
Herman - Dean Stockwell
Big Daddy - Van Johnson
Vitorio - Ricardo Montalban (wait, he did it already) Carleton Carpenter
Joanne's husband's name was Larry. I know because when I auditioned for COMPANY, I wanted Harry but was first cast as Larry. Disappointed, I took it because I wanted to work with the director/music director. When I got to the read through, I was informed that the originally cast Harry had dropped out and that I had the role. I was overjoyed!

Sweet Charity.

Hello fellow DR's, I have just returned from a sleepy day at school. I took the dreaded Algebra test after studying my behind off ALL day yesterday. I think I did alright, I won't know until Monday, though. Then French flew by, I slept through Monty Python in English, and I played a marvelous game of football in Gym. I love football.
I don't know a single thing about Sweet Charity, so I shall just sit here and smile and look pretty. Well, attempt to anyway. Football doesn't do much for looks.
So I ordered my Jeepers Creepers CD last Wednesday, and I was told it would be here in less than a week. It's not here! When should I be expecting it, anyone?
BK: You've inspired me to watch IAMMMMW tonight. I love that movie. And I'm glad you had good news about TFNM!
Posted by Sarah @ 10/16/2003 02:18 PM PST
Jennifer - thanks, I think you had told me about the "gift" clause in the past but I had forgotten. Still, $18.99 American plus shipping is more than I am willing to pay for anything. Even Avenue Q.
WEL - what is this thing called a "store" that actually has copies of cast albums for sale?
I've gone the route of HMV, Nicholas Hoare, even Futureshop in trying to secure copies of cast albums. My mother, shortly after we saw RAGTIME, wanted to buy that OBCR. She went through Nicholas Hoare, explaining what she wanted etc. First they had to order it into the country specially which three weeks. Then they charged shipping AND customs fees. When she was called that the cd was in, it turned out that the US store that Hoare ordered from had sent her the piano-concept-version of the show and not the OBCR like she had asked.
There was a no return policy on specially ordered cds.
And this was only a couple of months after the TONY's when most stores in the states would have had it in stock at some point.
At best (and even then, only in the mega-stores) you can find cast albums to shows that are or have recently played in Montreal. Most of them are of the Notre Dame de Paris French rocksical type which I have no interest in.
The Miss Saigon OLCR was in Nicholas Hoare when I looked last. So was the OBCR Fosse. Both of these shows were in town this summer.
I think that on top of that they had those awful "Best of Broadway" compilation albums and maybe Cats. Oh and probably Fiddler on the Roof and/or Sound of Music.
However, if I want the new Garou cd, I am more than pleased with the selection. :)
Posted by Emily @ 10/16/2003 02:21 PM PST
Did any of you know that Amazon.ca's music store and HMV are one and the same?
How crazy monopolistic is that?!? :(

Another thing I hate are lulls. For example, we are having a lull right now and I hate it. Let's lose the lull, shall we. Won't that be lovely to be lull-less?
Another thing I hate is thong underwear. Today I saw a teenage girl with quite low jeans and her thong underwear up so far that I had the urge to grab it and give it a good yank.
Another thing I hate are lulls.

Swishy, your CD is on its way.
The rest of you, time to get off your lazy butt cheeks and get some postin' goin' on before I bitch-slap each and every one of you from here to eternity. We were doing amazingly well, and now we have slowed down to a crawl? Are we Hainsies/Kimlets or are we BABIES?

DR JRand: That is of course the Boy from "O ZED". No Zee in OZ!
DR Jose: I can think of a few people at the is site who would be most interested in the "Build a Bear" idea.

Thanks, BK, I can't WAIT to get it! If I know myself (which I do, very well), it will be on non-stop for the next week. Or two. :)
Emily: You can only be a baby if you wear the itchy little zip-up pajamas with the footies, and drink from a bottle. MILK from a BABY bottle. Babies don't recieve alcohol. Still interested?
I have just been informed that I get to go and see MAMMA MIA in January, somewhere in DC. Thoughts in this show?
Posted by Sarah @ 10/16/2003 03:28 PM PST
That should be ON this show, not IN this show. But thats another question: Have any of you ever been IN this show?
Posted by Sarah @ 10/16/2003 03:29 PM PST
For DR WEL: Emily lives in Montreal (where I live). Like she said, and like Andrea said, it isn't that easy to find Broadway cast recordings here. Although the HMV downtown is IMO the best bet. They do get most stuff eventually. But it's not easy to get other cds. Our easiest way is through amazon.ca (or hmv.ca). Yes they merged into one.
Oh and Emily, btw, amazon's price for the Avenue Q cd is 13.49.
And to the person who asked if Canada charged duty on stuff from the US the answer is YES. And I agree it is bizarre, especially since it doesn't work the other way.
But really since I've masterd the "gift" system I don't care either way anymore.
Posted by Jennifer @ 10/16/2003 03:32 PM PST
For DR Emily: Check the downtown HMV in the soundtracks/cast recordings area. Last time I was there they had tons of cast recordings.
Oh and what do you have against NOTRE DAME DE PARIS? I love NDDP!
For DR Sarah: I personally LOVE MAMMA MIA. It is probably the funnest show I've ever been to. Yes the story was created around pre-existing songs. But they are great songs, that most everyone is familiar with. I loved the story and loved how the songs were included. Very fun show. Not deep, but fun.
Posted by Jennifer @ 10/16/2003 03:44 PM PST
A Closer Look at the Amazon-US Page -- will reveal that you can get a "used" copy of this title for $11.99.
That's $11.99.
Don't argue. Just go there and Do it!

DR Sarah - Well, I was in the pit for the second national tour of Mamma Mia! for a few weeks here and there. -And I may be doing some weeks when it plays the National Theatre in Washington, DC - it's booked for five months(!) this time round!
As another DR already stated, it's not a deep show, but it is a lot of fun, imho. There are jokes in the show that are put their purposely to get a groan or two. And some of the song set-ups are "out of the blue". *They list the songs in the program in no particular order - just that the "following songs" appear in the show. It's kind of fun checking them off and guessing which one is next.
*And, on a personal note ;-) ... There is lots of eye candy in the show/cast.
So go with an open mind.. or really no mind at all. Expect fluff, and that's exactly what you'll get. Prepare to laugh and to clap... clap a lot. And be sure to stay for the curtain call!

Zed - of course, thanks, DR Tom!
Oh, thanks BK -looking forward to the commmentaries! Hehehehe.
Now tonight on SPIKE TV starting at 9 pm EST three hours of Extreme Elimination Challenge - the "What's Up, Tiger Lily" of Game Shows. Give it a chance!
Posted by JRand53 @ 10/16/2003 04:50 PM PST
Are you sure it's not about the ultimate process of the alimentary function?
You know, competitive pooping. Nothing would surprise me on a cable channel called "SPIKE TV--TV for REAL MEN" or however it is they promote themselves.
Posted by Jay @ 10/16/2003 05:06 PM PST
Another thing I hate are lulls.
I saw Mamma Mia - it was fun, but much too loud for my tastes, at least as it was done at the Shubert. Will our very own Lisa Richard be in the tour that plays Washington? If so, both Jose and Sarah must go backstage and give her a big haineshisway.com hello.
Posted by bk @ 10/16/2003 05:22 PM PST
And lemme guess. The producers of "Extreme Elimination Challenge" must be the very same people who came up with the slogan "Void where prohibited."

What do I hear?
Canadian Hainsies
complaining they can't get
OBC albums in their stores in
Canada?
You should come over here,
France!
You WOULD have a reason to
complain!
Well, I guess I'm lucky 'cause
I'm in Paris and we have a
humongous Virgin Mégastore
on the Champs Elysées...
Listen; I place or have placed
orders VERY often -- twice a
month, more or less - with US
suppliers and I have NEVER
had to pay customs fees, ever,
except once because, unknow
of me, the package had been
sent FEDEX...
Also, and I've lived in Montréal
some years ago, there has to
be secondhand cd stores
there.... There are 4 to 5 of
them here in Paris, and
almost everytime I check them
do I find some goodies at
quite a competitive price... and
when I find stuff I already have
I get it to trade with other
hainsies and kimlets here!
Hope this helps some.....

states have no right to complain
about the cost of CD's!
Posted by Hapgood @ 10/16/2003 06:08 PM PST
Yeah François, I admit that it is possible to find some treasures in secondhand stores.
But with that you're still stuck in not being able to have the freedom to just walk into a store knowing that it will have exactly what you want.
I don't understand the Canadian government. On one hand they want the economy to be centred on the export of our natural and unfinished resources (so they keep the CDN dollar low as an incentive to foreign business to purchase our products) yet they ignore the fact that we, the people who are producing those same natural resources, need to get our processed goods back from the same place we're doing all our exporting to.
As far as I can tell, we're the only country in the world in a free trade system where we stil have to pay tariffs and customs fees.
I mean, it seems we're getting the short end of the stick both ways now. :(
Damn it... I'm just going to order from amazon.com and be really angry about the whole situation.

RE: having amazon.com send the items to canada as a gift.I just dropped by the site, and I forgot to mention that the reason they know it is a gift is because you must check off the "add gift-wrap/note" square at checkout. They then give you the option to pay for wrapping paper, which you can say no to.

Regarding the second hand Cd stores. I ususally make the rounds when I am Montreal.
There is Cheap Thrills. There used to be two stores now I think there is only 1.
There are about 5 used cd/books stores within two or three blocks of each other.
They are on Mount Royal near the Mount Royal metro station. They start about 1 block east of the station and if memory serves they are on both sides of the street and go on for three or four blocks.
There is also several of St. Denis north of Sherbrooke street on the west side of the street. They are north of LaFleurs hot dog/frites restaurant and go to about where the franco legit theater is whose name escapes me for the moment.
hope this helps

Pish Posh, we are SO close to 100, and no one is posting. Vamanos! (Is that right? I don't actually SPEAK Spanish, I just say a few phrases here and there when I'm annoyed. Usually phrases I wouldn't say around adults in English, :)
I was just reading back through the archives from days before my arrival. This place is so entertaining, I literally had to rip myself away from reading it, because I have to go to bed. I'm cranky enough as it is in the morning, I can't make it worse.
I have decided that the next paragraph will have no words repeating. This is extremely challenging, because one uses many typical phrases repeatedly during everyday typing, and, doing something with such high difficulties, they have to think very carefully. Bruce, tomorrow's notes should contain a paragraph written in a format resembling my own.
You have no idea how long it took me to write that. My head hurts now.
Off to sleep, sorry for my meaningless ramble, but that is what happens when you're not running on enough sleep.

Here is my list of wrong casting choices for Sweet Charity. They are all very good singers (for the most part), but very wrong for the roles:
Charity: Barbra Streisand
Oscar: Bryan Adams
Nickie & Helene: Celine Dion & Mariah Carey
Herman: Nathan Lane
Vittorio: Julio Iglesias
Big Daddy: Clay Aiken
How's that?

I can't imagine a better collection of extra features than were already included on the 26th Anniversary release. But if I could own this classic in SUPERBIT, I'd proudly display it right next to my SUPERBIT "Lawrence of Arabia" DVD.
Are you like me?! Are you chompin' at the . . . SUPERBIT?!

DR Craig!! Great photos of the opening night party for OH ZED!
Looks like everyone had a good time, except the critics, and they LOVED Hugh Jackman!
I'm thinking maybe if they used a FEW of Allen's songs as source music and then had an original score, too, it might have been better IMO.
Posted by JRand53 @ 10/17/2003 05:20 AM PST
Some of the critics writing about OH ZED point out that the songs are out of synch - chronologically.
However, this pattern was set by Hollywood - for example in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS - the entire cast came out and sang the song 3 years before it was written in a theatre that had been torn down 4 years before!
It's tradition!!!

first solo album for Warlow in
ten years and features a
collection of standards in a
celebration of Big Band Swing
from the 50s and 60s. Warlow
adds his musical genius to
the 'Big Band Jazz meets Las
Vegas' style evident in the
versatile vocalist's unique
rendition of the classic "Girl
from Ipanema".
Warlow, who was one of the
performers in the hugely
successful 'Main Events'
concerts back in 1998,
performed a series of four
shows in Queensland during
the first week of September
this year with an incredible
reaction to the music from this
album.
