"IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD"

Photo of Bruce Kimmel

bk's notes II

Well, dear readers, I was all prepared to be sparkling and lively when I received a call from my cleaning lady, she of the Evil Eye, who asked if she could come clean today instead of tomorrow. So, she is on her way and I must bang out these here notes in a trice. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night I attended the re-premiere of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World at the Cinerama Dome. We arrived at six-thirty, met up with the people we were meeting, and picked up our tickets. There was a red carpet set up near the main Arclight box-office. We stood there and stood there and didn’t see any celebrities arriving. Finally, I suggested there was some other premiere going on and that our premiere was in the front of the Dome. I was right. By that time we’d missed all the arrivals save for Sid Caesar, Edie Adams and Michelle Lee. We went directly into the theater and mingled. Those attending the re-premiere were treated to free drinks and popcorn. We took our seats and at seven-thirty we were treated to half-an-hour of speeches by various and sundried folks such as Karen Kramer, the widow of Mr. Stanley Kramer, Johnny Grant, the honorary Mayor of Hollywood (or something like that), and a few others. Before the film actually unspooled, we were treated to a short film which showed the Dome being built. From the time the property was purchased and the theater was designed, they had sixteen weeks to construct it, and they did it, night and day. Then the Overture began and I can’t tell you what a treat it was to see a pristine, brand-new 70mm print of Mad World which was, of course, actually shot in 70mm. The only problem was the same problem the Dome has always had, the projection is a bit dim there. The film, even in this slightly shorter version (approximately 165 minutes) is really long. I have never thought Mad World was one of the greatest comedies ever made, but it has enough laughs to keep me happy, and the cast – well, we’ll never see their like again. There just isn’t anyone like these people – Phil Silvers and Paul Ford and Arnold Stang and Marvin Kaplan and the stars, Spencer Tracy, Sid Caesar, Milton Berle, Mickey Rooney, Edie Adams, Jonathan Winters, Ethel Merman, Dorothy Provine, Buddy Hackett, Dick Shawn and Terry-Thomas. And all those cameo stars, everyone from Buster Keaton to The Three Stooges. The score by Ernest Gold is pretty amazing, too.

In attendance were Mr. Sid Caesar, Edie Adams and Marvin Kaplan (at least those were who I personally spied), along with Michelle Lee, Lainie Kazan and quite a few others. The most amusing thing that happened to me during the entire evening happened in the Men’s Room at intermission. I was standing there, washing my hands, when the fellow next to me just started staring at me and then said, loudly, in front of all the people in the Men’s Room, “Bruce Kimmel? Are you Bruce Kimmel? First Nudie Musical? I love that movie, I love that DVD.” I thanked him very much.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because she of the Evil Eye will be here at any moment.

Speaking of Mad World, there is a repackaged DVD that just hit the stores – do not be fooled – it’s the same thing as the prior DVD, just without the extras.

Well, she of the Evil Eye has just pulled up, so I must hurry and finish these here notes and get the hell out of here.

Today I’ll be picking up the latest version of my manuscript which, even though I’m not completely through doing the proofing fixes, I will be giving to two of the folks who’ll be providing blurbs for the back cover. There has been one detail in the book that I know is wrong that I haven’t been able to fix because no one, not one single person, that I’ve talked to can remember the detail I’m looking for. There was a bookstore in Beverly Hills that I used to frequent, and I could not remember the name of it (very unusual for me), so I just put in Hunter’s as a placeholder (Hunter’s was a block from the bookstore I used to frequent). Last night, lying in bed, I started going through the alphabet, thinking of various names and I finally remembered it, at least I think I did – I have to confirm it, but it sounds right to me. Whew!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must go hither and thither and perhaps yon, I must get the hell out of here and not return until she of the Evil Eye is gone. The good news is that I will not have to vamoose tomorrow. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, still going through my various Stan Getz imports, which are all amazingly amazing. DVD, just finished The Italian Job and I will hopefully be picking up a whole slew of amazingly amazing new titles today. I’ll keep you posted. Speaking of posted, let’s have loads of lovely posts, shall we, so that upon my return I will have scads of them to read for my mental delectation.

- Bruce Kimmel

Hooray! Let me do the dance!

I have no DVD/VCR here, and my
CD player is empty. I am currently
filling up my Ipod with all manner of
things.

VHS: A video of THE PERRY COMO SHOW with guest stars Edie Adams and Peter Palmer (of Lil Abner fame)

DVD: Bollywood film from 1961 tittled BAHAREN PHIR BHI AAYENGI. A nice little dramatic love triangle movie starring the hunky Indian actor Dharmendra.

CD: CUBAN BIG BAND MUSIC from the 1940s and early 50s.

No Dorothy Provine? 8-(

MR BK you were probably the talk of several sections of the theatre when those others who were also in the Men's Room returned to their seats and declared that they had seen the guy from THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL in the Men's Room. I would imagine several attendees were agog.

In my DVD player - THE CAT BURGLAR starring Miss June Kenney courtesy DR MBarnum.

In my CD player - James Darren, the Teen Years

In my VCR - BUT NOT FOR ME with a lovely performance by a young Carroll Baker opposite an older Clark Gable and sparkling performances by Lilli Palmer and Barry Coe. Lots of location shots of 1959 NYC including the beautiful St James Theatre, although I couldn't see what was playing.

On my phonograph - THE LIVELY SET soundtrack with a score by Bobby Darin and a couple of rocking songs by Ms Joanie Sommers who also appears in the movie playing the girlfriend of wacky Doug McClure.

Good morning everyone on
this Fridayest of Fridays!

I am back on a Mac and I'm
furious about the column
width. I hate Macs and
especially this one because it
has a French keyboard and I
have to keep reminding myself
about the exact location of
most punctuation marks which
differ from their location on the
standard English keyboards.

Thanks to everyone who tried
to come up with solutions for
my Avenue Q - North
questions and especially to
DR Jennifer for all of her
great help in sneaking past
Canadian customs. Are we
SUUUURRREE that Jennifer
isn't a spy for some third world
nation? I have my doubts as
to her REAL story.... : )

My condolences to all you
Boston Red Sox fans out
there.

If its any consolation, my
brother got tickets to
tomorrow's Leafs-Habs game
at the Bell Centre and he
chose to take his girlfriend and
not me. Now THAT is a rivalry
match! I am sad...

My AV Pleasures of the Week:

CD - My new mix cd which I
made last night consisting of a
little bit of everything. A little
RUFUS WAINWRIGHT, BEN
FOLDS FIVE, TITANTIC - THE
MUSICAL, and of course, JRB.
URBAN COWBOY, as awfully
country as it is, has some okay
moments. I just have to keep
reminding myself that without
the twang in the performers'
voices I would probably enjoy it
very much.

MP3: TICK TICK BOOM! I
hadn't listened to this show in
soooo long and am
rediscovering it nicely.

No VHS or DVD this week...
sorry!

I'll be going to work soon, so
you all better start posting and
often. A girl needs to be
entertained somehow! : )

CD - "Jeepers Creepers", "Avenue Q", the new Barbara Cook Christmas CD and "Seventh Heaven" - Gloria DeHaven, Chita Rivera and Bea Arthur (okay Bea had a non-singing role and is not on the CD). Also just got Babs sings Hollywood

DVD - "Flash Gordon" (the serial, not the feature), the bonus DVD with Babs sings Hollywood, "A Mighty Wind"

VHS - Nothing - NBC decided to show a rerun ER at the last minute yesterday

Cassette - Several episodes of "The Wonder Show", a 1938 program (sponsored by Wonder Bread and Hostess cupcakes - 2 for a nickle) hosted by Jack Healey (before he was the Tinman and way before he was Liza's father-in-law for a while), announced by Gale Gordon (before "Our Miss Brooks") and featuring Lucille Ball (before she met Desi).

Hey Emily!

Btw, you're not lying. The cd is a gift TO YOURSELF!

Posted by Jennifer @ 10/17/2003 10:26 AM PST

Good morning/afternoon, DRs! I'm at rehearsal technically, but they don't need me right now. I feel...soo..unloved *sniffle* ;)

BK--Thanks for telling us about the IAMMMMW re-premiere! That was such a funny movie. Have you seen Rat Race? That's technically a remake, although there's no Berle or Rooney or MERM to make it as good as the original, hehe.

Hapgood--I bet you look so cute when you boogie down with that first post dance. Although Emily is the mistress of the First Post Dance, and let us not forget hehe.

Btw, I also feel so badly for Red Sox fans. I saw the final homerun (I dozed off when the yankees must have tied it up). It left me so sad! I like the Yankees fine. But I hate having to watch them year after year buy the best team. It is heartbreaking to people who live in cities that cannot afford that. And it makes it unenjoyable to watch the same team in the World Series year after year. It's also bothersome (to me at least) to listen to some Yankee fans go on and on about how much they want their team to win. Huh, you've been in the WS like 7 out of the last 9 years. Give someone else a chance :(

I have no interest in Florida/NY and will probably only watch the ends on Sunday and Tuesday as I wait for my WB hour (which here is on FOX after the games).

Btw, I got my Clay Aiken cd. It was completely sold out at FutureShop and I had to get it at Walmart. Did anyone know that Walmart will match other stores prices? I got it for 14.99Cdn. Anyone know what they are selling it for in the US?

Posted by Jennifer @ 10/17/2003 10:32 AM PST

WEL, that FLASH GORDON serial is soooooo much fun! Larry Crabbe, Jean Rogers, and Ms. Priscilla Lawson!

Posted by MBarnum @ 10/17/2003 10:41 AM PST

There is absolutely no change in the contents of my DVD, CD, VCR since the last time we listed these things (three days ago???).

I do have the Clay Aiken CD added to the pile. It's sitting on top of "Avenue Q" waiting to be opened and played.

Speaking of being played, did anyone notice that last night's network programming was all re-runs on NBC?

They've given us roughly three weeks of "new" programming, but last night they gave us re-runs...from last season!

It was great for me, though, because I watched a new episode of "Survivor: Pearl Islands" on CBS. NBC has yanked "Coupling" OFF the airwaves. This was supposed to be the next "Friends." I'm guessing they can't figure out that "Survivor" is going to suffer a little from "Friends" at 8 p.m., but the audience is going to migrate from NBC to CBS for the final half hour of "Survivor" (like I do!). Not even "Friends" could survive the 8:30 p.m. time slot.

But the network shirts are the ones getting paid the big bucks NOT to understand what I, a mere viewer, know instinctively.

Are S. Woody and der Brucer on the road yet? I thought they were departing imminently, but I think I may have misread stuff.

François: My boss returned to work Monday after a three-week visit to Paris. She was staying in a pied-a-terre that belongs to a friend and she was joined by several other folks over the three weeks.

She claims France is very expensive! A cup of coffee and a pastry is 5 Euros, she said. Only transportation was a "bargain." But she had a blast, ate and shopped herself into a tizzy, and wishes she were still there.

Adieu!

Posted by Ron Pulliam @ 10/17/2003 10:58 AM PST

The NBC reruns were a last minute change because they didn't want to put new episodes on opposite the playoffs. Instead the reruns that were scheduled for next week played this week and the new episodes scheduled for last night will be on next week. CBS did it too and NBC also did it Wednesday.

Remember most popular shows do only 22 new episodes a season and since 12 of them run during sweeps this leaves only 10 new episodes to spread out through the rest of the season. This is just another of the problems with television today.

I just realized that I forgot to go over my current CD/DVD selections.

CD--Jeepers Creepers (again), Nancy LaMott's Johnny Mercer album

DVD--Quills

VHS--The Usual Suspects. Jay is aghast at the sheer amount of films he loves that I haven't seen, so I've been trying to catch up. Next up...The Collected Works of Kevin Smith. Sex-obsessed stoners...yay...like I didn't know enough in high school, lol.

Jennifer and Ron--I'd actually like to get the Clay Aiken CD too. Were you pissed when he lost to Ruben? I mean, Ruben had a great voice but Clay's was so above and beyond. Let's get this boy on Broadway! I think he'd be great in a JRB show, for example.

In the CD player: a six CD set from the Indiana Historical Society marking the centenary of Cole Porter. (Mr. Porter was born in the bustling metropolis of Peru, Indiana.) It covers the range of Mr. Porter's oeuvre from 1916 to 1956 in chronological order and contains many historic recordings. Goodness, the man was clever and talented! (But, of course, everyone here already knew that.)

Greetings from the NewsBar on 12th Street.

I arrived here last night for a birthday visit (mine) with my oldest friend, Patty. The Air Canada flight was the worst of my life - for a few moments, I thought it was going to be the last of my life. I got hit with flying ice cubes and drenched with a Bloody Mary or two (they gave me a dry cleaning credit), and the plane landed a full half hour ahead of schedule. (I asked the rabbi in front of me if he was praying. He said that even the atheists on board were praying.)

Friend Patty was busy, so I headed to Broadway and, following DR Jason's recommendation, headed for the Boy from Oz and bought myself an opening night ticket. (It was my first Broadway opening night since, are you ready, Any Wednesday.)

There I was among the glitterati, shlepping my carry-on bag and smelling like tomato juice and tobasco. But from the moment the usher (Lillian, who started at the Imperial during the run of Fiddler on the Roof) greeted me warmly till the last of many, many curtain calls, I had a grand night.

I have to say that I agree far more with DR Jason's review than with the Times's. I shall remember Hugh Jackman's breathtaking performance forever - which I hope, with Air Canada's cooperation, means a long run.

Hmmm. Dear Reader Maya:

I think we will need to distinguish between your new amour and moi. (Oh, a Miss Piggy reference.)

Can we call your new boyfriend "Macbeth" or "Jay Macbeth" and leave me as "Jay?"

Or how about referring to him as DBF (Dear BoyFriend?)

I wouldn't want the world to think I have made it my business to insist that you see the Collected Works of Kevin Smith, someone with whom I am not even familiar.

Posted by Jay @ 10/17/2003 11:46 AM PST

I just finished listening to a CD called Silly Songs, novelty songs from 1922-1934. I'm not listening to anything now and I won't be most of the weekend since I'm working tomorrow probably until 7 or 8pm.

I have a question about my Jeepers Creepers CD. I ordered it on October 3 (two weeks ago) and got a confirmation e-mail from Pay Pay that it had gone through. How long does it take to get the CD? I thought I would have had it by now?

Posted by Ben @ 10/17/2003 11:46 AM PST

Hi! I've returned from Philly! Right now, I'm listening to the Maury Yeston Songbook. I also listened to it yesterday on the train, along with Lauren Kennedy: Songs of JRB. (Emily should be proud of me!) There's nothing in my VCR or DVD player, but that's ok.

Just a random warning: If you have purchased a Reach flosser (the one that resembles a toothbrush), be careful! I don't think you're supposed to push it all the way down to your gums, and I definitely got it stuck between my teeth last night.

Posted by Laura II @ 10/17/2003 11:59 AM PST

Jay--I think that is a very, very good idea. The DBF will be referred to from now on as Macbeth, hehe.

I don't know if you'd necesarrily want to get familiar with the works of Kevin Smith. I mean, he's not a bad filmmaker really. The one film I've seen of his, Dogma, was a very darkly funny satire on religion (Catholicism in particular--and not that I have anything against Catholics...mon pere is one). But his other films, so I've heard, are mostly about rather puerile man-children who sit around smoking pot, griping about their jobs and women they have no chance with, and dishing about life in general. Clerks, Chasing Amy, Mallrats...those are some of them. Given a choice between listening to a 6-CD Cole Porter compilation or watching a Kevin Smith movie...let's just say you've made the right choice, IMHO! :)

Posted by Maya @ 10/17/2003 11:59 AM PST

Maya-I must say that DBF Jay is
doing quite the Pygmalion on you.
Of course, soon it will be incunmbent
upon you to introduce him to the
musicals he must hear. We can put
together a plan to put him into a
raving musical fan. You start with the
gateway shows, then get him into
the hard stuff. Like Drug addiction,
really.

I must compliment his taste. Both in
choosing you for a girlfriend and his
taste in movies. Usual Suspects is
great fun, and I am personally a big
fan of Kevin Smith. Many of the
characters are horny, stoned, etc.,
but that is underestimating the
sharpness of his dialogue and how
fully drawn his characters are. I think
that Chasing Amy, in particular, is a
masterful movie. (And no, that's not
just because Jason Lee is most
attractive. That's not the only
reason. ;) )

Well, the reviews for "The Boy From
Oz" are certainly savage. And it is
clear that Hugh Jackman provoked
many a naughty fantasy in the critics'
heads. And who can blame them?

Poll question for DR's: What should
be Hugh Jackman's next musical
role? I say Macheath in the
"Threepenny Opera." He could
really make the sexy/dangerous
combination work, and he can
actually sing. There have been
plenty of Macheaths who could do
neither. I think I heard that the
Roundabout is considering
Threepenny for 2004-05. I think they
should look into him. (He couldn't be
more expensive than Banderas!)

Posted by Hapgood @ 10/17/2003 11:59 AM PST

WB, Laura! We've missed you!

Isn't the Maury Yeston Album great? and have you bought that mike yet, haha??

Posted by Maya @ 10/17/2003 12:02 PM PST

Okay, WEL, was that supposed to be Jack Haley or Bert Healy?

DVD player Titanic with Cliff and Babs ( I want to watch the documentary special feature again)
CD player (home) The Boy from Oz
CD player (car) Bernstein’s Gershwin / Grofe CD - with Rhapsody in Blue and Grand Canyon Suite.

Jrand - I am so glad you mentioned Doug McClure. I hadn't thought of him in several years, since I heard that he had passed away back in the mid-ninties. I think he was the first crush I ever had on a man. I watched or saw everything he was in, whether it was a TV series (like The Virginian), movie of the week (Shirts and Skins), or a feature film (The land That Time Forgot). I was always sure that Mr. McClure would be just as nice in person as he was on screen. Sadly, I never got the chance to meet him.

Posted by TCB @ 10/17/2003 12:05 PM PST

haha Maya, I still must buy the mic. I've been bad, I know. And yes, the Maury Yeston Album is wonderful! I love "Danglin'" and "Now and Then."

Posted by Laura II @ 10/17/2003 12:06 PM PST

I'll tell you what show I'd like to see Hugh Jackman in. I'd like to see Hugh Jackman in NAKED BOYS SINGING.

Posted by Jay @ 10/17/2003 12:13 PM PST

Awww! Hapgood, darlin', I do believe I'm blushing! If you won't be my other boyfriend, will you be my teddy bear??

I've realized reading your post that I may have been a tad too hard on Kevin Smith. He really does write some pretty sharp dialogue...he's no dummy. I would like to see more of his stuff, before I make up my mind and come to any judgements. But yes, I LOVED the Usual Suspects...it just twisted my mind like a pretzel, and I really am enjoying some of these new films I'm being exposed to.

Laura--don't worry about the mic! I just had to tease you a bit cause it's so fun.

Hmmm...I have to think about good Hugh Jackman roles...I'll post later. Ya'll have fun and post up a storm!

Posted by Maya @ 10/17/2003 12:15 PM PST

DR Maya - I think the theme song to the movie RAT RACE is so funny, and I love the credit sequence...the movie not so much...but it makes me laugh until the ending. Kind of a cop-out, I think. If you liked it, try out SORE LOSERS with Stephen Weber and Craig Bierko. It's on Showtime or Cinemax or some such this month.

DR Jay - you know of course the name of Cole's town is pronounced PEE-ru. It is also the home of the Ole Olsen Theatre (as in Olsen & Johnson). I've met a second cousin or two of Cole's - they always travel around when a theatre is doing one of his shows. The lady I met was very nice - very old - dressed up to beat the band - and had pink hair.

DinNY - I am so jealous that you were at the OPENING NIGHT of The Boy from OH ZED. Grrrrrrrr....what fun. I hope you picked up Playbills from the floor to send to all your friends. Did you see DR Craig Brockman taking photos?

Posted by JRand53 @ 10/17/2003 12:16 PM PST

DR TCB - Mr BK says that Mr McClure was crazy - but in a good way.

You know THE VIRGINIAN is shown on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday nights - two episodes in a row around 11 pm or midnight.

I liked Doug in that show AND the tv movies you mention (especially the one that had him posing for a painting by Barbara Feldon) - but my favorite one of his movies from the big screen was the 1966 remake of BEAU GESTE that co-starred Dean Stockwell and Telly Savalas!

Posted by JRand53 @ 10/17/2003 12:20 PM PST

DR Hapgood - isn't Mr Jackman supposed to be in the film version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA?

WEL - I should have put LOL or a smiley face after my comment. I hope you know I was just being a smartass.

Jrand - I forgot all about the film Beau Geste. Mr. McClure was very good in that. I probably saw Gidget five times just to look at him and James Darren. I don't think anyone ever had to worry about him winning an Oscar, but he was just a nice (and good looking) presence on the screen.

Posted by TCB @ 10/17/2003 12:38 PM PST

Sorry for the typo... Jack Haley.

As I stated earlier in the week, I have no desire to see BOY FROM OZ and the reviews I read all say to some degree love him/hate the show. Someone asked what should Mr. Jackman do next. My question is when his OZ contract is up, is there anyone who can replace him? Unlike THE PRODUCERS which can (and usually does) work without its original leads (despite what has been said in the media) it really seems like Mr. Jackman is the only reason to see the show. Is there anyone out there that can take over once the next X-MAN movie begins filming?

Posted by William E. Lurie @ 10/17/2003 12:40 PM PST

TCB - that BEAU GESTE has sort of disappeared. I don't think I have seen it on television since sometime in the early 1970's.

I have a set of lobby cards from it, but I don't think it has been released on VHS - or it is OOP if so. Eventually though it will be found!

What was that pirate movie he did?

I forgot. I actually have videotapes to talk about this week. Earlier in the week I looked at UNFAITHFUL and THE ITALIAN JOB. Cued up for this evening is LOVELY AND AMAZING. I missed all three in their theatrical release and figured it was high time I caught up with them.

There may be a problem causing the double posts. The first time I tried posting I got an error message so I posted again and it was then listed twice.
