January 04, 2004:
"TIVO AND DISH"

Photo of Bruce Kimmelbk's notes II

Well, dear readers, it took three hours but I am finally installed. I haven’t even begun to explore the five hundred page instruction manual or even what channels I have. I must say, the quality of the digital dish is quite good and there certainly do seem to be a lot of stations to choose from. Additionally, because of the screwup last week, they gave me three free months of Showtime, so that’s nice. I’ll probably try to figure things out during the day – things like how to use this confounded Tivo machine so I can record things if I’m gone. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night I watched a motion picture entertainment on DVD, said entertainment being entitled The Accidental Tourist, which I got an early copy of. I haven’t seen the film since it came out and I was concerned that I wouldn’t like it as much as I did back then. Well, I liked it more. What a sweet and fine film it is, with terrific performances by Mr. William Hurt, Miss Kathleen Turner and especially Miss Geena Davis, who is pure magic in the role of Muriel. The screenplay is lovely, and the score, by Mr. John Williams, is one of his most underappreciated – in fact, I’d say it’s one of his greatest and that this film could not have a better score. Of course, if the film were made today it would be filled with songs telling us how the characters are feeling – thank goodness this film escaped that fate even back in 1988. The transfer is great, the sound is great, and I give it my highest recommendation.

I ate a lot of silly food yesterday – a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, and then a Lean Cuisine teeny-tiny pizza thing, and then an ice cream cone. And all because no one wanted to go get pancakes.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got to go play with Tivo and dish, not necessarily in that order.

Tivo and Dish – that sounds like a Disney animated feature, doesn’t it? My suspicion is that I’ll only end up watching things like the Oscars and the Tonys, TCM occasionally, and then the odd Biography and TV Land and stuff like that. Oh, and I get free Showtime and HBO so I can watch Curb Your Enthusiasm and Penn and Teller’s Bullshit! I wonder if I get CMT – I’ll have to check. And can someone tell me more about the channel called Goodlife that shows all those WB TV shows of old? Is that on some other satellite system, because I don’t see it in the Direct TV list.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must play with Tivo and Dish, I must surf channels, I must peruse the five hundred page manual, I must do an errand or two, and I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you get to choose the various and sundried topics. One topic to discuss is Tivo and Dish – I need shortcuts and help, the most important question being why is there no “Off” button anywhere? Does the Tivo unit stay on all the time? Let’s have loads of lovely posts, shall we?
