An potential project for bk would be penning "Murder at Hollywood Community College". Of course, there is no HCC - how rude! There is however a North Hollywood CC - maybe Adriana has to move.

Note to non-SoCal HHW denezins:

Hollywood is a city in Florida, but merely a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles in CA. They do have a city of North Hollywood, and one of West Hollywood, however.

It will be a challenge for parents to find toys that have not been made and China and not have lead paint

A chore made particularly difficult when toys need not be labeled based on the country of origin of individual components (I could manufacture a toy in Nevada containing some parts painted in China and still label the toy as "Made in the U.S.A.")

The challenge goes far beyond "toys" - think of all the stuff around the home that kids could stick in their mouths (or chew on) - wooden coasters, jewelery boxes, christmas decorations, holiday napkin rings...(and lets not forget all the wonderful "retro" christmas decorations and kids toys from the 50's - Grandpas sled is probably toxic - not to mention his cute little red wagon!

UND's original nickname was the Flickertails back in the 1920s.

It was NDSU in 1932 that suggested UND should change their name to the Sioux to make it work with the Nickel trophy that the football teams would play for. Bison vs. Sioux.  The trophy was an indian head nickel.

UND now blames NDSU..

No!  I would not even dare call them that in ND... I do value my life!

These were GErmans invited by Tzarina Katerina the Great  to settle in the Volga River valley and around the Black sea area.

Other German groups include Sudeten Germans, and Germans from Bukovina, BEssarabia, WEst Prussia, and Moldavia.

DerBrucer, I would not be surprised at all. Cheap as possible with the poorest supplies as possible.

The government and especially the BIA practiced eugenics on native American women until the 1970s on some reservations.  It is one reason that very few native american women had children in hospitals due to forced sterilization.

HUMAN ERROR TO BLAME FOR SAN FRANCISCO BAY OIL SPILL

OAKLAND, Calif. —  A preliminary investigation found human error caused a cargo ship to crash into the Bay Bridge, leading to San Francisco Bay's worst oil spill in nearly two decades, the U.S. Coast Guard said Saturday as rescue teams raced to save hundreds of seabirds.

What nit-wit bureaucrat put that bridge in the ship's way?

Don't get me going on Indians from the reservation - I hold a very politically incorrect point of view: youth from Indian reservations come from a damaged gene-pool; most native Americans with getup and go got up and went! Generations of selective out-migration (heavily weighted toward the more capable) has further degraded the reservation stock.

In retrospect, the whole Reservation concept was a badly conceived and wretchedly executed new-world effort at peace making. The traditional kill and conquer model works better in the long run. When aboriginal peoples are confronted with overpowering invaders, they are ultimately best served by forced integration.

Good morning, all! Tomorrow morning at this time I shall be in LaGuardia awaiting the flight to Ohio, friends, family, and foe.  I have not looked forward so little to the flight since the one in February when my dad died.

Today is a bit of finishing up here and at Toyland various pieces of work, tidying up the apartment, packing up what I need to take with me, and trying to remain relatively calm since I dislike flying more and more the older I get and since I have no idea how unpleasant the week may get.  Yesterday I got to the phariacy to refill two prescriptions and purchase allergy medicine for life with the wonderful Max and Maddie, Randy's dogs.  I wish there were a commercial anti-venom for Lady M.  Or a silver bullet.

DR Ginny, didn't you have a date picked next week for us to do something?

After I get the receiver set up, I'll be watching EYES WIDE SHUT on Blu-ray disc. Haven't seen it in years, so I look forward to the revisit. It's always been a controversial film and most folks either love it or hate it.

I really do admire much of it, and as this is the unrated edition, I'm looking forward to seeing the REAL film for the first time. Both the theatrical version I saw and the DVD I have featured the graphics overlays to prevent the film from receiving an NC-17 rating. I doubt that the sex on display will make the film any more or less what it is, but it will still be interesting to see what's actually going on there.

Hi folks!

Debi and I both want to thank DR td for the wonderful time we had yesterday.

It was so nice to meet another one of the HHW gang.

Pittsbugh is very nice.  Not as cold as I thought it would be but I'm told that is yet to come and I need to come back up in mid January to really see (and feel  :o ) it.   We'll have to see about that.

We also went to my parents grave.  Thank goodness all was right with it.  That's on worry off of my mind.

I took your advise and I did go and look at that house that I posted the link to awhile back.  I really liked it.  Debi and I spoke to the lady next store (who was very nice) and she told us that they called it "heart attack hill"  because it was so steep.

It also had a power tower next to it.  I wouldn't mind.  I lived in front of a radio tower when I was growing up with no ill effects.  Well, maybe that explaines my healthy "glow". ;D

We had a blast last night.  We went to STation square and rode the Incline.   ;D  I'm seeing my first Steelers game today.  Debi gave this thing called a "terrible towel".  I have no idea what it is.  I guess we'll see this afternoon.

Gotta scoot.

Hugs and vibes to all.

That's a beautiful song!
When I was a 7 year old church pianist, (I played for the children's choir and Sunday school), our minister, Reverend Tom Liotta always made me play it as a piano solo every Palm and Easter Sunday.
It wasn't until much, much later when I led two choirs that I had my choirs sing it to great accolades.
Joe Feeney used to sing it on The Lawrence Welk show. . .

Re: TORCHWOOD I'm not exactly how i worded what i wrote about John Barrowman  not being featured in your last week's episode.

What i meant though was that he (john Barrowman) has been in almost every second of all the episodes i've seen (i think we are up to number 5 or 6).

So I found it different that in later episodes he's not featured almost at all. It will certainly be a huge change from the shows i've seen.

Sunday morning greetings!  It's a gloomy, drizzly day here in SW Ohio and DH Richard is under the weather.  Fortunately he has a doctor's appointment already scheduled for tomorrow.  I may try to get one, too, for a flu shot and the headache I've had since the middle of last week.Well, DR Elmore, assuming everybody feels OK, we're planning a birthday dinner for DH Richard at Montgomery Inn on Tuesday, if you'd care to join us.  Otherwise, this is a crazy week for me - how 'bout Friday or Saturday evenings or anytime on Sunday?

Sunday is definitely out, but I'll see how things are looking before I commit to anything.  I understand that Macbeth is already throwing nails and broken glass onto the road; I don't know if it's because he's being contrary for a reason or trying to assure I screw up so he can pull an "I told you I should have been the executor and done it right" attitude.  I suspect the second is much more Lady M's modus operandi.

Next week is the traditional [at least, at our church] "Puritan" Thanksgiving worship service.  They worship in the style that congregants would have worshiped back in the late 1700's.  Men and women have to sit on different sides of the church, even enter through separate doors.  Instructions are distributed in advance for making Puritan "costumes," and people are encouraged to construct and wear same.  No instruments are used, and all hymns [from the Psalms] are sung a cappella.  I lead the music as "cantor", and for my pains am given a professional rented costume.  There is even a bit of "congregational cacophony," where no tune is announced; each worshipper chooses their own hymn tune, and somewhere along the way they are supposed to be guided by Divine Providence into unison.  [I cheat a bit, and it usually works].  I may post a picture, if I dare.  Oh, and they read excerpts from actual sermons preached in the church back in the 1700's.  They are mostly pretty deathly dull.  The orignals ran to two hours; fortunately, we are treated to only 15-20 minute's worth.

I did go to Sears to buy a stove yesterday, but it turned out that if I went back and bought today, it would be even cheaper.

I had a regular gas stove in mind, but DerB got me thinking about a convection oven, and the guy at the store also recommended it. I've never used one, but I liked the idea that I would be less likely to burn something!

Any thoughts on convection ovens from the masses? Pros? Cons? I'm going back to Sears tonight...

I'm not a fan of convection ovens.  I like them for baking potatoes, other than that I use the regular oven setting.  People rave about them.  I'm on my third one at this house, and while it is the best one yet I'm not thrilled.  I think it bakes somewhat dry.

What brand are you looking at?  The first Dacor we replaced, cuz it was old and didn't work well,  with the same brand-only new and improved.  It was better but I was still disappointed.  When we remodeled we went with a Wolf & I'm much happier.

We got a convection/microwave which we like.  That gives us the option of a second oven if we need it.

Well, here I am back, battered and bruised but alive (an APPLAUSE reference) and here to tell the tale.

Unhooking the various cables was relatively painless. because all of my equipment (except the laserdisc player) can be connected through HDMI, the number of video and audio cables is drastically reduced. So, when I finished, I had this MOUND of video and audio hook-ups. (I could give Radio Shack a run for its money.)

When I unhooked the speaker wires, I was very careful to label everything. The new receiver came with preprinted tabs for the wires which actually came in very handy (see below).

The new receiver weighs almost 40 pounds, so I placed a cushion under the front plate as I tipped it toward me and started reattaching the speaker wires one by one. It went much faster than I expected. I guess having done this for the fourth or fifth time makes this part of the process less a pain than it used to be. I should have known, of course, that it COULDN'T or WOULDN'T be that simple.

When I finished with the speaker wires, I hooked in the two HDMI cables (one in from the HDMI switcher that controls four machines and one out to the TV). I also hooked up the s-video and optical cables from the laserdisc machine. And I was done (I thought).

This receiver has automatic speaker recognition. You plug a supplied mic into a front port, the receiver sends signals through all your speakers so it can adjust sound levels automatically. I had to do this several times as it kept getting hooked up on one speaker and wouldn't for farther. Finally got that done.

I had to tell the receiver which buttons controlled which machines, but that was easy. Then, I started first with the cable TV connection since I use that probably the most. I punched up the DVR to the CSI episode I had watched yet, and the sound came out - Dolby Digital 5.1 just like it was supposed to. I was very pleased.

UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE was still in the upconvering player, so I tried that next. Sounds came through fine, but it's a mono movie, so I thought I'd better check with a DD 5.1 movie. I put in a HARRY POTTER movie, switched it on, and immediately the receiver had a heart attack and turned itself off. (I also had a heart attack at such a startling problem. I thought I had fried the receiver.)

Tried it again, turned itself off again. Went to the manual, and it said to call the user hotline if this happened. I did. The tech guy (very nice) explained that more than likely one of the speaker wires was breaking the circuit, and he recommended that I take out all the speaker wires and rattch them one at a time. Turn it on after each one when in to determine which one might be causing the damage. I did this, but as I was taking them out, I saw a stray piece of wire from the left rear speaker wire touching metal, and I knew this was the culprit. I still redid all of the speaker wires and put them in again one at a time just as he suggested, and I now have a perfectly functioning receiver.

(I did have to go in and manually readjust some of the speaker volume levels. The front speaker wasn't quite loud enough to compete with the surrounds.)

I did go back and watch the CSI episode. It's a crossover episode with Jack Malone (Anthony LaPaglia) from WITHOUT A TRACE, and I'm glad I recorded WITHOUT A TRACE, too, because the story did not get wrapped up at all during the CSI episode. The killer and the motivation was revealed, and then he goes on the run when he vanishes WITHOUT A TRACE (clever, eh?)

Not a great episode to be honest.

Next, I watched the first 90 minutes of EYES WIDE SHUT on Blu-ray. Yes, I picked the unrated version, so nothing was blocked. (The previously blocked stuff was basically just having sex in different positions and pairings, but it isn't as if there were close-ups or anything.)

Two or three scenes showed the benefits of the increased resolution of high def, but since so much of it is shot with diffused lighting and there is moderate grain constantly, high def isn't really much of an advantage with this. I listened to the uncompressed PCM 5.1 track, but since the sound mix is so front heavy, it didn't sound much different from Dolby Digital 5.1.

der Brucer

I thought I had said over the last few days. Anyway, three basic diferences.

1. Being able to plug ONE cable into the receiver to give me the sound and picture for my system clears away a TON of audio and video cables.

2. The receiver upconverts ALL incoming signals (even from the laserdisc) into 1080p which is the native resolution of my HDTV.

3. The new receiver can decode the latest high definition audio signals: Dolby DIgital Plus, Dolby Digital True HD, and DTS-HD, none of which my previous receiver could deliver. I was only listening to the core of the signals without the ability to decode any lossless (uncompressed) audio tracks. It gives the sound a much more open, realitsic sound without all that compression.

Good Afternoon!

I'm back from Radio City Music Hall, where I was treated to and enchanted by the 75th Anniversary Edition of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  And, even though this is the 75th year of the RCCS, this was actually my first time seeing it.  -Even though my parents have been coming up to NYC every December for the past couple of years with their friends to see it.

I kind of knew what to expect after reading various stories about it, seeing footage on the TV, talking with friends who have been a part of the show over the years, but this afternoon literally had me smiling from ear to ear right from the moment I walked in RCMH and saw the amazing Christmas Tree Chandelier in the lobby, to when I walked out the strains of the theatre organ playing Christmas carols.  -Although, I'm not sure who the organist was today.

Thank You, DR FJL, for your continued generosity.  I hadn't really planned to kick-off my Christmas Spirit this early in the season, but I'm not complaining either.  :)

DR elmore - FYI - The orchestrators listed in the program are: Danny Troob and Dave Pierce; with additional contributions by Jonathan Tunick, Doug Besterman, and Arthur Harris.

I talked briefly with Ken Lundie who's been playing rehearsals for this year's edition - and many of the ones in recent years - and he doesn't recall your charts being reused.  And after seeing today's show, something tells me you did not orchestrate that funk/R&B version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas".  ;)

You think?  It's happened before (in much the same way, for those who may remember a couple of years ago), and I'm sure it will happen again.  The reasons for karma don't interest - just the supposedly "abhorrent" behavior that supposedly came out of nowhere and was based on nothing.  Sorry, reality doesn't work like that.  In fact, it's surprisingly like the agent involved in this little fracas - when facts were explained, he ignored every single one of them and went on in his single-minded, obnoxious and VERY incorrect way (even after I proved him incorrect to his FACE, he went on as if the proof I sent him didn't matter).

I see no difference between that and this, frankly.

My next Radio City visit is planned for Thanksgiving weekend.   Having heard mixed things about Cirque du Soleil's WINTUK, I figure a repeat visit to Radio City will be the better kick-off to the real holiday season.

Hmm... No, but I do know of a rock group called Mobius from Massachusetts.

Have you been asked to direct another show?  A European version of the Party Animals perhaps?  ;)

I'm going Chinese for dinner tonight.

Hot and Sour Soup (from a mix, my bad)

Battered and Fried Pork and Pineapple, with either a Sweet and Sour Sauce, or a Ginger Sauce (der B's choice for what he wants - I'll be doing Ginger myself)

Stir fried veggies with a lemon sauce (because I've got the lemons)

Stir-fried rice, with bacon batons and scallions

It was beautiful here today, in the 70s and bright sunshine.   I went to the house party for Barbara Richardson. I liked her very much.  She is as down to earth as her husband, very personable and had a great sense of humor.  I now have a Bill Richardson sign in my yard.  I shall caucus for him.

ATTENTION FELLOW MYSPACE MEMBERS-

There's a new round of spamming/commenting/account hacking going on.  In fact, mine might have been "fished", so...  If you happen to have received a comment from me - a video comment - over the past day or two, just delete it.  I did not send it.

I actually received the same "comment" from two of my friends as well as from "myself".  Ah, the "joys" of the internet.  :-\

Well, it's quite overcast and chilly, right now.  I was hoping to take a little walk in the new shoes that I bought yesterday at Costco ($15.49 before tax), but I think it's actually raining.  Anyway, the shoes that I got are Court Classics and I would assume are supposed to be shoes for playing tennis, but hey, for $15.49, who cares?  I wore them last night to usher for the jazz band concert, and they were so comfortable.  It's a nice (financial) change from $95 shoes. ::) I don't think that these will last as long as the $95 shoes that I've gotten before, but again, for $15.49, who cares?? :D

Actually, that is one of Levain's thin-crust pizzas, so I'm guessing the Gruyere Cheese also "helped" to make it palatable.  ;)

*The other two varieties they have are: Caramelized Onions with Parmigiano-Reggiano and Black Olives with Goat Cheese.   I find all three varieties quite good.  -And sometimes I bring one home, and then reheat them with some sliced chicken on top.

The tax payment amount has landed.  Oy!  The Macbeths will be chewing nails all week.  It seems my plan on how to pay the taxes last Thursday was thwarted by him, partially, I suspect, because he wants to see me fall on my face as executor this week.

However, my will has been changed and in the hands of my attorney. I was going to remove the Macbeths from getting half of my estate but I changed my mind. I'm leaving him and his wife $10.00 so they'll know I hadn't simply overlooked them.

I watched the remaining 90 minutes of EYES WIDE SHUT. I have to say I was totally surprised by the ending. I thought it ending with Tom's character coming into the bedroom and finding his mask on the pillow. I thought his breakdown was the end of the movie. Imagine my surprise when it kept on going for two more scenes! They've always been there. I had just forgotten all about them.

Next, I watched all of the bonus features on the disc. The three interviews from the old SD-DVD were still there, but there were three new documentaries. All OK stuff but nothing special, and in one of the documentaries, the Cruise and Kidman interview excerpts were the exact complete interviews that are elsewhere on the disc.

I liked BROTHERS & SISTERS a lot. A very moving episode with some truths finally coming out, and the family pulling together in a crisis as they always do. Can't wait to see repercussions from some of tonight's revelations.

Oops...  Just checked my schedule, and "realized" I'm playing auditions in the morning.  -At least my day work is not affected by the strike.  So...

Goodnight.

That, and the fact that DotM still comes back, day after day, hour after hour - for what?  So we can talk about him?  It really does remind me of two years ago.

Well, DS Betsy and I already have our least favorite person on TAR:  Ronald.  Oy.  If I ever treat my children like that, may they cut me out of their will.  ;)

At the end of the show it sounded like he sort of got what he's doing, I'll give him one more episode to shape up or he'll be my least favorite too.

Callie is doing quite well this weekend. She even showed off playing toys for her grandparents. Now she wants food...I must obey...;)

Okay, I'm packed andready to go. I will chill out, set the alarm for 5:30 am, and  watch a bit of tv. I need lots of good vibes, DRs, for both the flight and the week in Ohio.  Prayers are good, too.

~~~Super Vibes for Elmore!!~~~
Elmore:  Betsy and I cut a nephew out of our will (my side of the family) for his continued bad behavior, and we made that exclusion quite clear in the will itself so that there could be no mistaking it.  We had the attorney put in a codicil saying that if anyone contested the will, the entire estate (beyond what our kids get, which is most) goes to charity.  I know how certain members of my family think.  ;)
That's a good idea. :)
The Manhattan Transfer recorded a song called "The Quietude."  I remember one time in concert, they said that someone thought the song was called "The Quiet Dude." ;) It's from their CD called The Offbeat of Avenues (http://www.tmtfanclub.com/offbeat.html).  Here are the lyrics:
THE QUIETUDE (Encuentro de Animales)
Music by Chuck Jonkey
Lyrics by Alan Paul
[English translation of Aymara narration]:
In ancient times great fear arose among the inhabitants of Tiahuanacu, the Spaniards were coming into their lands. The Indians retreated to their houses in great fear and closed themselves in total isolation without food or water. They sat down in great sorrow with knees bent and heads bowed (they are called Chullpas) and died. They were buried in this position. Others froze to death in a standing position like stone monoliths (monolitos). The Indians who live there today are very poor – no clothes or food. They seek a better life and move to the cities where they learn to read, write and do any kind of work. They earn money and don't want to return to their homelands.
[Sung]:
Night calls through the air
reaching for its solitude
Dusk lures like a lyre beckoning
the quietude
In state of constant commotion
full of rage and heartless devotion
There's a need that burns within to
fly away, just fly away
Soft winds kiss the land
silent and in gratitude
Children hand in hand
comprehend the quietude
Through a maze of fear
and compulsion
There's a race for the power
and fortune
Still a need within cries out to
fly away, just fly away
People rush, people flee, they
move so fast that they cannot see
Work all day, up all night, they
push and hide all the joy inside
Like a wave that breathes in
the ocean and the mountains
peak with emotion
There's a need that calls within
to find a way, just find a way
Time to leave and fly away,
to take a leave and castaway
To leave the worries and the dismay,
it's time to go,
it's time to play it's...
Time now to fly away,
take leave and castaway
To fly...
The moon it guides my way,
winds blow to show the way
To fly...
Dawn breaks, day descends
With a calming attitude
Shadows fall and bend
Welcome in The Quietude
AARRGGHH!!!  My DVR DID NOT record this show again!!  It didn't record it last week, either!  AND I checked it to make sure that it was set to record. >:( It did record "Brother & Sisters" afterwards (but not last week's episode), and when I got home after rehearsal tonight, there was a message on my TV screen from the DVR saying that it was full and something needed to be deleted!  BUT THE DVR IS ONLY 57% FILLED!!  WHAT'S GOING ON??
