Title: A MONDAY KIND OF VIBE
Post by: bk on August 07, 2006, 12:17:02 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a Monday kind of vibe and a Tuesday kind of xylophone, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having a Wednesday kind of vibe and have taken some Lithium.

MMMM  Never been to a garage sale nor bought anything on ebay.

Thrift shop - the occasional record.  Probably the most useful was an LP by Ron Lowry as it has the track "Marry Me" which was a hit in Australia in the early 70's but has never made it to CD. Mr Lowry is from Phoenix.

My best "find" using the internet was a recording I heard first in 1961 and had been unable to track down for over 30 years - "The Exodus Of Pepe From the Misfit Summer Place".  (Yes - a novelty record)

"Cut The Cake" was the second chart success for Scottish group "The Average White Band" who are usually remembered, if at all, for "Pick up the Pieces" #1 in 1974/5.

You needed to know that.

Good morning, all!  I am off to hospital:  hopefully, my dad will be released this morning, and I'll be bringiong him home.

TOD:   Pittsburgh, 1972:  I found a sealed set of the OBC "She Loves Me," which was quite rare and going for a high price, in a usedrecord shop for $1.00.  I laughed all the way to Ohio!

Good Monday morning all!  Do I really have to go back to work?  Well, to be honest, I am really leaving work behind.  Speaking of behinds, I worked my off this weekend cleaning the kitchen.   I'm still not done but I got quite a lot of it done.

Good morning DR Elmore!  Vibes to you and your Dad.  I hope that he is well enough to come home today.

I've been lucky enough to find quite a few things I have treasured over the years but recently had a funny thing happen.  Sheena (Queen of the Jungle) managed to knock a dish off the table and break it on a Friday night.  No big deal but it was part of a set.

The next day, I went to a local thrift store and Lo and Behold there was the exact dish (only one of them)!  Of course I bought it for just a dollar but I remember I wondered what the odds were of that happening.  :)

I finely received my trial pairs of contact lens in the mail from the doctors office.  I've been calling them because I thought they got lost in the mail.  Finely, the nurse said she would just send me another pair since the others never showed up.

Would you believe that I received BOTH  pairs in the mail on Saturday?  One package was dated, July 27th and the other August 3rd.  Now can someone explain where the first set was all that time?

There's nothing else that feels quite right
Nothing else but that.

So what if there's a people thing
With crackers, cheese, and wine.
Let them talk and eat and sing

I'm not one to haunt yard sales.

I do enjoy heading over to the local discount bookstore on occasion.  I've picked up a few bargains that way.  But I have to be careful, because der Brucer likes to come along and usually spends at least three times what I do!  Searching for bargains can get pricy!

Where did everyone else get their SHE LOVES ME double album Red Cover release from MGM?

At a supersized department store called Atlantic Mills which predated K-Mart, Woolco, and other similar stores (Wal-Mart wasn't even a blip on the map here then).

I also got the soundtrack to GYPSY there, both for some ridiculous price like $1.98.

Best buy I ever found at a yard sale was a pair of circular audio speakers which I got for $5 for the pair. They worked perfectly and I used them for many years. One has since burned out, but I really loved those speakers (in my office now), and the one that still works still functions beautifully even after all these years.

As for EBay, I've been lucky enough to win a good many items I wanted, and they were treasures to me, but I don't know how special they would be for anyone else, so I won't bore anyone with details.

The most recent acquisition I wrote about last week, that long out of print Criterion laserdisc of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN that I had long wanted. Got it for less than $15. Its list price would have been $99 or more all those years ago when laserdiscs were the best quality you could get in home video.

There are stoop sales sometimes in Manhattan but very few garage sales. We do pass them when we are out on Long Island but have rarely stopped. We do hit those indoor places sometimes. The large "antique" malls with many different vendor booths. We have found some fun things, including sheet music for Civilization (AKA Bongo, Bongo, Bongo, I
Don't Want to Leave the Congo) and a very nice trivet/tile for our small kitchen decoration scheme.

Dear Esteemed, lithe, guapo, studly, and even-more-svelt BK,

Yes, after the fun of this past weekend and the warmth of your reception to this "prodigal son," I come to the threshhold of the BK Living Room to begin my intense and fervent atonement for time away and happiness missed here in your aura!  I have a large bowl of bitter herbs which is sitting right next to my laptop for just such an occasion.

I send out a big Hainsie/Kimlet hug to DRs who are friends from earlier postings here, and I look forward to finding out about newer DRs......... who at this point are looking at a strange name and probably saying "....MusicGuy? What is it.....fish?!"

We will go to our standby, Chelsea Grill, a nice, homey place with good food and pleasant atmosphere. We will probably then trawl around looking for a nice dessert place.

Anthony's cousin lives near the Boystown neighborhood in Chicago. That name never really caught on in Minneapolis when I was living there. The city has (or had, I haven't lived there for 26 years) a couple of different GLBTQ areas, Uptown near Lake Calhoun and the Loring Park area near where the old Guthrie used to be located.

Re:  today's column title.  As I have recounted here before (what else is new?  ;D), one of my first dialogues with BK was years ago when I asked if he had written the song "Driftin'" found on an obscure late 60s LP by a Mamas and Papas knock-off group called The Collage.  BK's priceless answer to me was, "I would never write a song with a dropped "g" at the end of a word."  (The song was actually written by Bobby Kimmel, and it's a very nice one, dropped "g" and all).  Well, anyhoo, another great song on that record is "Any Day's a Sunday Afternoon" (by the immortal team of Joelson-Careaga) with this a propos chorus:

It's a Monday afternoon on Friday
Thursday afternoon on Wednesday
Any day's a Sunday afternoon

(This was 1968--it was hard to keep track of days whilst stoned out of one's mind.   :D).

I've been trying to track down info on this group for years and years.  I even had a nice email exchange with Perry Botkin, who did the rather baroque orchestrations for the album (think Sgt. Pepper, only more-so), and even he couldn't remember anything other than that he had done it).  Do any of you Angelinos know about the group?

TOD:  what's eBay?   ;)  I've found many a treasure at thrift stores and online.  Long before the internet took over and the fairly recent spate of CD re-releases, there was a fantastic used record store in downtown Seattle (just a little north of the downtown core, can't remember the name, but it was the owner's last name and I think it was Italian or Greek), and I found so many sealed, rare cast albums there--everything from The Mad Show to The Zulu and the Zayda.  I dropped big bucks there through the years.

And through a connection I made on eBay I ended up with Frances Farmer's 1935 passport, which is probably one of the rarest pieces of FF memorabilia I own.

At 10 AM, my Dad was dismissed from hospital, by 11 AM he and I were into his car Dolly (named by him for Dolly Parton because of the big headlights).  We did a fast sightseeing jaunt, then a turn to Fed Ex for me to send work back to NYC, and then a stop at the cemetary because he wanted to see my Mother's (and his) grave.  That was abad move on my part because of his frailty, and I never thought he'd leave the place alive.  My brother Randy has now given me hell and I am feeling quite chastized.  I can't wait for the browbeating from the evil brother!

My dad is now safely sitting on the porch of Randy's home, and I am looking for quick flights back to NYC.

DRBen, happy anniversary!

Elmo - hurry home... you did a good thing, taking the old man out to the cemetary. When my mom was a couple of weeks from death, she wanted to go visit her parents' graves one last time. Even if it was sad. Nothing wrong with sad. You did a good thing.

Happy Anniversary, Ben and Anthony! Eleven years... may you have the next eleven in good health and sweet companionship!

Thrift shops!!!! Only place I shop for clothes. Especially the Value Village in Redmond WA!!! The Microsoft millionaires go on these diets, you see, and lose six dress sizes. Then they head over to Nordstrom and Bellevue Square, and buy ALL NEW CLOTHES in size 2... before they can cut the tags off, well, what can I say -- some of the weight has crept back onto their bones... so they take all the size 2 new stuff to Value Village for a tax write off - and head out to buy more STUFF!!! So, as I browse on Monday - 99-cent day - I sometimes find these amazingly beautiful brand new clothes in size 2, many with the tags still attached!!! I must have over a hundred dollars worth of clothes in my closet by now!!

PS - It has spoiled me... I can't pay $15 for anything any more...

Aww, thanks, folks for the good wishes. Anthony thanks you also, even though he's not here (he's here in spirit).

Speaking of bargins, I finally got a copy of Dessa Rose. It was on sale through Broadway Cares ($20 including shipping and it usually sells for anywhere from $35 to $40), but apparently I got there too late. I had placed an order on Wednesday last week and was told I would get a confirmation e-mail. I waited and waited and today I got an e-mail but it was not the one I wanted. They had sold out of DR but the Web site had not yet been updated. Oh, well. I ended up going to my favorite store, Academy, and what was there but an unopened copy of Dessa Rose for $26. I picked it up and will listen over the week. It's the entire piece and it's beautifully packaged by John Yap of TER/JAY Records. Like FJL, I'm a fan of the show even though it got pretty well trashed in the reviews.

DR Penny, it was right across the street from Bellevue Square that my eldest sister bought the aforementioned LP of The Collage, after having seen said group on the Mike Douglas Show.  There was a little drug store called "Marvel Morgan's" on the corner there.  Now this was in the day when Bellevue Square consisted of maybe 4 stores, no joke.  One Christmas my other sister came to visit and she and my "Collage" sister erupted into hysterical laughter one night when my visiting sister said she wanted to go to "Happy Flanagan's" the next day--that's what she remembered Marvel Morgan's being called.  Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind.

If I look unhappy in the photos George posted on Saturday, it has nothing to do with the Village Theatre festival, which was lots of fun.   I just don't have the ability to smile on cue.  Plus I clearly forgot the clench-your chins rule which I learned here on HHW.

I was surprised that the library near where we were staying enforces the half-hour rule of usage for the internet for out-of-towners, even when there are available computers.  But I guess there's an administrability issue, and it's easier to enforce a rule all the time rather than have people say they didn't know about the rule when the joint is busy

her daddy-o is Martin Vidnovic.

Speaking of Mr. Vidnovic, I saw him last night in the new production of The Fantasticks. I was not expecting good things but it's a very nice production. I saw it with a friend who had done the show at Sullivan Street in 1983. He said it's an almost exact replication of the old show. There are minor changes but, to me and my friend, nothing stuck out as inappropriate. Mr. Vidnoic, as I was about to say before I went off on a tanget, is quite good as Bellomy. Tom Jones is excellent as Henry, the Old Actor. He also directed the show. Henry is listed as being played by Thomas Bruce, Mr Jones' acting name when he was performing.

I sometimes wore my hair combed all to one side, over like Annette’s or tied into one pig-tail.  It never reached her level of poofiness (spelling?;D ).

Jane never had poofy hair.  Nor did I.

Back from a jog - I'll say one thing - it's easier for me to jog when it's warm.  Today is gray and chilly.  I'm happy for the respite from the heat, but it just makes jogging a bit harder.

I am a thrifter, no doubt about it. Brooklyn was a great place to live for stoop sales. I furnished my Park Slope apt. almost entirely using such sales. Some of the furniture I still have.

Of course you might guess that OCCASIONALLY, I will haunt thrift stores for there records.

There is a great CD/Record/Tap establishment in Minneapolis called Cheapo. Ant and I make a pilgrimage every time we get back to MN. I have made some good purchases there.

I am fortunate to work near a Salvation Army store that has great turnover of LPs. In Manhattan, most thrift shop records have been long ago picked through and only the same junk remains. At my local Salvation Army, however, I have found a ton of interesting albums in my year here.

Still generator, Ben. Don't know why exactly, maybe they fear the massive printing machines will damage the grid. Today, the generator was turned off for awhile and we had no power at all for awhile.

I watched a couple more FRIENDS episodes since the DVD was still in the player from last night. One involved Ross' inability to flirt. This also featured Joey making a homemade video since his part on LAW & ORDER had been cut and his Italian-seaking grandmother had her heart set on seeing Joey on TV.

The other had the three guys going on a ride-along with Phoebe's cop boy friend. A shot rings out and Joey tries to shield Ross rather than Chandler which leads to some very funny jealousy and hurt feelings on Chandler's part.

Vidnovic is Civondiv backwards.  At least Benanti is easier to say.  So is Itnaneb.

DR Cillaliz - Click on Quote in a message where someone has done it and copy and paste the code onto a Word document, or as I've done on my Mac, onto a Stickie.  When you want to do something similar, just copy and paste the code you've saved, and replace the URL with the one you want to link to.  Between the bracketed b & /b put in the words you want to appear in your message.

PennyO -- Do you realize how famous that Value Village in Redmond will be once JEWISH THIGHS becomes the biggest hit in Broadway history?  And when that day comes, I will be able to say that I almost met you several different times.

I believe I got She Loves Me on LP at my local market - sealed, in stereo.

Sealed in Stereo?  Does that mean two pieces of plastic wrap?

I bought my copy of SHE LOVES ME at a discount bookstore in the Coddingtown Mall in Santa Rosa.  I was managing a men's shoe store in those days.  The name of the store was Hardy Shoes.  Our unofficial slogan was "Every woman loves a man with a Hardy on."

So, I guess you could say that I have spent my whole life in shoe business.

I was lurking and couldn't resist the TOD. I LOVE garage sales! The greatest thing I ever found at a Garage Sale - a Contents Sale, actually - was years ago in Toronto. We were driving home from somewhere on a Sunday afternoon, going through Rosedale, a wealthy, older neighborhood. I noticed a Contents Sale sign in front of a stately mansion and asked my then husband to stop while I ran inside to take a peek. It was late in the day, so the place was practically empty. Some of the built-in floor-to-ceiling bookcases had a few books left, and that was about it. I picked up a volume and leafed through it. STORIES FOR TWO - around 20 one-act plays by Ferenc Molnar. It looked like a fun read, so I paid a quarter for the book and left.
Later that night, I opened the book to the title page - and saw that it was inscribed to some friends (in Hungarian) by Ferenc Molnar! Dated 1950.

The post-script to the story is that I'm going to Ottawa in October to be one of 50 Hungarians honored by the Canadian government. I think the family of the rightful owners of the book will be there. I'm going to give it back to them. (Which is what I should have done when I first found the inscription - but perhaps I'm a better person now.)

Dear esteemed, sated, inspirational, and mensch-like BK -

I got through the fairly yukky morning errand (involving the dreaded canal of root!) and it actually wasn't too bad.  Your Marie Callendar visit makes my mouth water......it is one of the few "corporate-chain-restaurants" that I find actually delicious!

To treat myself this afternoon, I have logged on several times, and felt very warm and wonderful seeing little notes from wonderful persons like TD, Laura, TCB, Jrand, MB, Tomovoz, Ben, Jane, George, Jeane, and many others.

I have eaten several times from the bowl of bitter herbs today, and will continue to do so, as I progress on my atonement.

Can some technophile help me?  I have recorded a couple of video clips onto DVD from a live 1958 FF tv drama that I want to upload to my site.  They are in VOB and such format.  I assume I need to convert them to MPEG or AVI or somesuch so that any hyperlink on my site will play them.   What software do I need?  Is it easy to use?  Recommendations are appreciated!

For those of you who don't know, MusicGuy is an erudite and extremely talented player of pipe organs. He has many CDs and here are links to just two of them

Stairway to Paradise (http://ohscatalog.stores.yahoo.net/lynlasttopa.html)

A Tribute to George Wright (http://www.gothicrecords.com/trtogewr.html)

As Ben mentioned, Music Guy is an extremely talented organist.  I have his Stairway to Paradise CD and I love it.

Mom said she'll have dad email her chocolate pie recipe to me tomorrow. I shall pass it on as soon as I get it

Peanut butter pie is

8oz cream cheese
1 cup sugar
3 T melted butter or margarine
1 cup extra chunky peanut butter
Graham cracker pie crust
1 large carton cool whip

Blend cream cheese, sugar, butter and peanut butter
Fold in cool whip
Pour in pie crust

Makes 2 small pies or one large pie.

We've always frozen them, but you may be able to just chill and serve. Don't really know about that.

It's been quite a day at HHW, and I'm happy to see the return of DRs td, JMK, and MusicGuy, whom I do not know.  I don't recall seeing any posts from DRs RonPulliam today and Jose.  I hope that they are okay.

My dad had quite an exciting day today.  I doubt he'll make the ride to the airport tomorrow, much as I'd like him to, but I'll spend the morning with him while I pack.  I am quite happy to be heading back to NYC.  Unless something alarming happens, I'm thinking about returning in late September after the New York Musical Theatre Festival opens.

The book I am reading (ON EDGE) concerns the behind-the-scenes travails of judges and referees in the world of figure skating. I got so caught up in reading about the 2002 Olympics that the first thing I watched tonight was Sarah Hughes' magical performance from those games, a superb skate that brought her from fourth place to first and the gold medal.

Reading about all the bargaining and machinations that have gone on behind the scenes in skating for many decades, it is indeed a miracle that Sarah was awarded that gold medal.

THE CLOSER was indeed a tumultuous episode tonight, and how wonderful to see such an array of guest stars I remember so fondly from previous work: Anthony Heald, Patricia Crowley, John Bennett Perry, and Paul Hipp.

And the ending was indeed a total shock.

CSI: MIAMI had one of the season's most colorful episodes as Horatio gets framed for murder. The ending, however, of the episode continues to be totally and insupportably unsatisfying.

And I have the DVR catching Biography episodes on Angela Lansbury and Truman Capote during the early morning hours. Have never seen the Capote one, and the Lansbury one should pair well with the Private Screenings interview from last week on a DVD-R. Of course, I'll have to delete the commercials first, but that's not much of a problem.

Hello one and all,

Well, the weekend was really something (weekend being Thursday and Friday).  Bruce is looking as svelte and lucious as ever.  Very thin man (no resemblance to William Powell or Myrna Loy)!

The two cabaret shows I saw (the whole series, I'm sure, but I can only go by what I actually saw) were further proof of what a talented genius of a director/writer/producer our fair Bruce.  He must be very romantic, too-- as he had Adriana swooning at his proposal (proposal of marriage).

Thanks to Bruce, DR Laura and DR Sandra, DR Jeannie, the Hellzapoppin' energy and extreme sincerity of Jason Graae and the pleasure of Kevin Spirtas, I floated through my first day back to work even though the day was filled with tedious things and tedious people.
I had a ball, and I thank youall so much!

Maybe we'll also see the return of SwishySarah, Maya, Hapgood, William E. Lurie, William F. Orr, and a plethora of others.  Wouldn't that be the berries?

And speaking of MIA - wherefore art thou such errant and truant hainsies/kimlets such as vixmom and Jose?

I did some Googling and took a chance on a download trial version of a program called, aptly, Movie Converter, which seems to do the trick.  I'm still playing with it, but you can see the first fruit of my labor on my site.  Click the Frances Farmer button, then Pictures/Multimedia, and there, finally, is a short clip from Frances' 1958 Studio One drama Tongues of Angels.  You'll even hear a snippet of the elegiac Jerry Goldsmith score.

For my birthday in May, one of the things that I got was a $30 gift card from Circuit City.  Well, I've finally gotten something with it.  The complete second season of "The 4400."  I have the first season and thought I should complete the set...until the third season comes out.  I also bought (and had to pay for) a 2-fer pack of "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters 2."  I love the first movie and don't really remember the second (but I know I've seen it).  So, someday I'll watch them. :)

I have Nero CD/DVD burning software on my computer and I just found a list of pdf manuals that are contained in the program.  One of them is for a wave editor and within that function (separate program?) is a Karaoke editor!  Supposedly, you can take a stereo song and have it remove the vocal line!  If it works (and I actually have it), that would be pretty cool!  I must look for it.

I found the Karaoke editor and I must say that, basically, it's crap. :P

Okay, I only tried on two songs and just played around with the settings, but nothing that I did made it sound good.  It really distorted the whole track...and that's not good.  I don't know what the original track has to be like, but it doesn't seem like it will be easy to figure out.
