JMK said (last night)

Re:  Cindy Williams and Drowsy.   Maybe I imagined it, but didn't Drowsy post a closing notice for August?  Did I make that up?  I could have sworn someone posted something to that effect either here or on Preeo's listserve.

It's the London production that is closing in August, not the NY production.

Unless Joanne Worley is not working out, I'm not sure that it would be Drowsy for Miss Williams. Miss Worley is doing a lot of publicity and I haven't heard that she's leaving. My first thoughts were either Miss Morrible from Wicked (Cilla mentioned that) or Rona Lisa Peretti (the teacher) in Spelling Bee. If Rue McClanahan can do a musical then Miss Williams can do that same role. Neither show (Wicked and Spelling Bee) requires a legit voice for those roles.

Good morning, all! Today I'm home with a chart for Mr Ron Raines.  Tomorrow I will return to my NYPL schedule: I have lots of scrapbooks from 1903 and 1912 to call up and peruse.

I'm hoping that all lease negotiations will wind up today or tomorrow, although my cynical side says it will never happen.  Keep them vibes coming!

Thanks to DR MATTH, DR SINGDAW, and DR VIXMOM!!  I shall no more after the Thursday read through of THE SUNSHINE BOYS....  I am very excited, although I expected a different Willie, and my very good friend Sandi was not cast as the Practical Nurse (not the Buxom Nurse)....but it will be fine.

It is an Advil Day after all the carrying and running and falling and jumping during the FANTASTICKS abduction ballet rehearsal....after doing NEVER SAY NO about 25 times with the fathers.

The Manson case....from start to finish....ending with HELTER SKELTER a chilling book.

IN COLD BLOOD is probably the best of crime books, that I recall.

There was a book about the murders on the moors in England.....

The minutiae of every case now presented to us minute by minute on CNN for some reason makes it less interesting to me.  Especially some cases that seem to have very obvious perps!

DR RLP....I do not take Bean-O, but it has nothing to do with Orson.

After it was mentioned last night, I played ILLYA DARLING (LP) side one....Mr Bean singing "Golden Land" is so funny.....  I am only saying again, I didn't like him in THAT ONE show!!!  Otherwise, he neither makes nor breaks a show for me....

Obviously DR RLP...your co worker thinks you have X-Ray vision!

Good morning!

I got up at 6:30 this morning! Can't believe I couldn't sleep longer because the house was nice and cool. It got down to 59 last night (in July yet!), and I had windows open all night with the attic fan drawing in the coolness.

It's partly cloudy now, so the sun is obscured and the cool continues. If summer could be like this always - cool mornings with rising temperatures in the afternoons - I wouldn't mind it so much.

I think we will have one more morning of this.

I'm not much for following crimes like murder investigations (a surprise since I watch so many crime procedurals on TV), but the Watergate crime was certainly something I followed intently. Even though I taught English and not history, my school kids would constantly ask questions about it until it all came out in the open.

Two major events for me on TV tonight:

1. Glenn Close's new TV series DAMAGES premieres on FX at 10 p.m.

2. Opposite it on Bravo is the season finale of Kathy Griffen's MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST. Season finale already! Wow!

BTW, MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST was again nominated for a reality show (non-competitive) Emmy last week, and once again she finds herself in the category with the winner the previous two years: EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION.

Kathy got some great comedy material out of losing to the show last year, so I'll look forward this year to see what happens.

Perhaps DR Jose or DR Music Guy or others here who might play auditions as the accompanist can answer this:

Don't accompanists despise these types of books when they're brought in for an audition? I remember at one audition I attended (BYE BYE BIRDIE, I think), a girl plopped a fake book on the piano for her singing audition, and the pianist said, "Didn't you bring anything else?" She ended up singing "Happy Birthday," I think.

That happens frequently in the summer, Ben. We have even passed "stupid motorist laws" which fines them or requires them to pay for the rescue.

It is drilled over and over every year: don't drive into running washes. Just like: never leave a child unattended. But people don't listen.

Circumambulate is a perfect word for a wandering Jew, don't you think?

Does anyone else think Joan Ryan looks like Hilary Swank?

TOD:  well I was too young to read about it while it was going on, but I have spent several years researching my late Uncle Pat's international scandal circa 1961-63 when he was falsely accused of being a Soviet spy.  He ended up spending several years in Leavenworth until the conviction was overturned on a technicality.  The case was front page news for most of the spring and summer of 1962 when his court-martial trial was going on.  It created untold stress for my Dad, who had just been nominated to be a Brigadier General in the Army.  My Dad had to go back to Washington D.C. and testify before some closed-door Senate committee.  Our phones were bugged, and my sister and I were followed to school by the FBI (no joke) to see if we were "passing secrets" to other elementary school operatives.

TOD - hmmm, OJ, but the notes said other than OJ.   There was Small Sacrifices I think her name was Diane Downs,  Jeffrey McDonald - just saw him on Dateline the other night, Michael Skakel's case was intriguing to me, I didn't follow everything, but followed most of it.

I'm intrigued by the minister's wife who murdered her husband recently.  I didn't follow the trial very closely but have followed the media coverage.  Winkler...can't think of her first name.

There have been others....

Weird you should mention Diane Downs--there was an Oregonian article about another lady named Downs this morning, and I was trying to remember Diane's first name.  You probably know she was an Oregon story--really, really sad and very scary.

My parents are especially intrigued by the murder in a small town in Missouri that was the basis of the book "In Broad Daylight" and a movie, as well. I think it's Skidmore, Mo.   Anyway, the town bully was shot in broad daylight while most of the town watched and no one has ever cracked and told who did it, so no one has been prosecuted.   The dynamic is fascinating.

Since the town is on the way from my parent's house to my sister's house, they have stopped there a couple times.  I always wonder if they think someone is going to spill the beans while they are in earshot.

They also went to Garden City, KS to see the farmhouse etc from In Cold Blood.  My parents let me watch that movie when I was just a little kid...and we lived at the end of a long driveway. I was scared to go to sleep for a very long time

Another shared family thing...she lived in Mesa or Tempe for awhile. I don't know the address now, but when I lived there I did and drove my mother past the house.   Of course it's just a house, but we do that sort of thing in my family.

DR Matt - most do hate them and can't play out of them.  I have no trouble and it helps if I know the song.  It depends on the person.  But as I tell my kids, never assume anything about your audition accompanist.

Re:  fake books at auditions.  Since I probably do more jazz than the average theater accompanist, I have no problem with them, and actually prefer them to poorly notated charts (you would *not* believe what people bring to auditions--well, some of you would, LOL).  But I know some accompanists just don't have the facility to quickly comp with only chord symbols, so you want to make sure, as others here have said, to know what your accompanist feels comfy with.

DR Ginny - If you are still looking for comments on the neighborhood of 54th and 9th, you'll be fine there.  It is quite revitalized from how it was a number of year's ago.  It's a bit quieter than it would be if you were several blocks closer to the theater district, but that is a good thing.  It is safe, and you should feel perfectly comfortable walking around there.

I'm stupid, Ben. But even I am not that stupid.

We were driving to California via Twenty-nine Palms once and got caught in a big storm. The wash crossing the 2-lane road was running with water, and no one even tried to cross it. It didn't take long to go down -- an hour maybe. And even then I was freaked out, since I know NEVER to cross a running wash. I watched several small passenger cars go through it before I would try (and I had the truck that day).

He's my dear old college friend who also worked with the fabulous orchestrator Larry Moore years ago on a Ben Bagley Jerome Kern LP! TOD - In April, 1993, there was an uprising at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.  I followed it pretty closely on Cincinnati's Channel 5 for 2 reasons:

1)  The warden was someone on whom, twenty years earlier, I'd had a huge crush.

2)  The TV reporter was about 8 months pregnant and I wanted to see if she'd go into labor on camera (she didn't)

I was quite surprised to find that there is a book about the incident:

Lucasville:  The Untold Story of a Prison Uprising (http://freepress.org/journal.php?strFunc=display&strID=221&strJournal=26), by Staughton Lynd.

Here was the trivia question:

Two plays - one season.  The season was littered with flop plays.  Play one was one of many flop comedies that season.  It was directed by someone who was equally known as a producer and playwright and who had several hits, one of them a big musical comedy.  The cast included an actor making a sort of comeback, said actor being most well-known for playing one role early in his career.  A female co-star would go on to appear in a classic musical, and a male co-star would go on to appear in two classic musicals.

Flop play two ran a bit longer than flop play one, and was adapted from a novel.  Even though the play was a flop, it would ultimately be turned into a hit film. The person who adapted it would, just a few short years later, write a classic musical.  The play starred someone who'd appeared on Broadway many years prior to this play, but who was much better known as a motion picture star.  Also in the play was an actor who, a few short years later, would co-star in a classic motion picture, and then star in a classic motion picture, which would lead to him to becoming a beloved film star of his era.  Also in the cast was an actor who would, a few short years later, star in a classic musical.  Another co-star originally began a career in a different field of show business, and said co-star was very successful in said field.  Said co-star also became legendary for one piece of comic business.

So:

Play one:  Name the play, name the director, and name the big musical comedy he directed.

Name the actor who was making a sort of comeback, name the role he was most famous for playing, and name the reason for the sort of comeback.

Name the female co-star and the classic musical in which she'd appear.

Name the male co-star and the two classic musicals in which he'd appear.

Play two: Name the play.

Name the star who played the lead

Name the co-star who would co-star in a classic movie, then star in a classic movie, and name the two movies.

Name the co-star who would go on to star in a classic musical and name the musical

Name the co-star who started out in another field of show business, tell us what said co-star did, and name the comic piece of business the co-star would become legendary for.

And here are the various and sundried answers:

Play One -

Love and Kisses/Dore Schary/The Unsinkable Molly Brown

Larry Parks/Al Jolson/his comeback after many years on the blacklist

Susan Browning/Company

Bert Convy/Fiddler On The Roof and Cabaret

Play two -

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Kirk Douglas

Gene Wilder/Bonnie and Clyde/The Producers

Arrrgggh -- this trying to find a place in NYC is driving me nuts!!! Does anyone know anything about nycityliving.com -- like are they ligit, have a good rep, etc.  The NYC Better Business Bureua posting says "they just got information on the company so check back in 4-6 weeks" so what does that mean getting info on them? -- that they're a new company, or that someone has filed a complaint?  And 4-6 weeks will be a little late for me. I found a place through them but the agent is doing that thing that yes they'll take a credit card but is pushing the use of their Bank of America account -- and is a full month's rent a normal security deposit? And how does that work getting it back -- I'm going to call him to say I want to do it on my credit card even if it's the deal breaker cause if it's a scam I will have a way to dispute the charges and ask about how they hold the deposit and how I get it back. At the other place, called Prestige Group, the guy said his fee was the full month's rent and I said well that's way too much (most of them charge around $200-300) so he comes back with, oh, well, it's all negotiable -- and I said, well I'll have to think about it and get back to you -- NOT! I HATE bartering and playing games. Good golly, post the damn total (fees, deposits, etc.) and the pictures and location, and then I'll let you know if we have a deal...sheeeesh!!

While waiting on the mail to come this afternoon, I decided to watch the remaining episode of ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN. In the end, Superman saved the universe! (That's actually the title of the last installment.)

Really enjoyed Lyle Talbot as Lex Luthor. He's a no nonsense Luthor which makes me like him so much more than Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey.

The other feature was a preview of that documentary on SUPERMAN "Look Up in the Sky" or something like that. It was only five minutes or so in length and was much more interested in publicizing the (then) upcoming SUPERMAN RETURNS than giving any information about the earlier renditions of Superman. In fact, in this little preview, Kirk Alyn wasn't even shown or mentioned. Reeves, Reeve, Cain, and Routh are all given some mention.

Next I watched another MOONLIGHTING episode. In this one, Maddie's mother has a feeling her husband is cheating on her, so David volunteers to do some undercover work to learn the truth.

Robert Webber and Eva Marie Saint played Maddie's parents.

Then, I replayed the episode and listened to the commentary of head writer/producer Glenn Gordon Caron and star Cybill Shepherd. At one point she breaks down into tears while talking because she said the episode hit very close to home in her own life when she learned her father was a serial womanizer.

At another point, Cybill mentions that she found it unfair that Eva Marie wasn't nominated for a guest star Emmy for her performance. Caron reminds her that they didn't have guest star Emmy categories back then. Except, he's wrong. In fact, Whoopi Goldberg, who guest starred in one of the second season's episodes, WAS nominated for a guest star Emmy. The only difference then was that they combined guest actors and actresses into one category for drama and one category for comedy. They didn't have separate categories for the two genders.

DR Ron, you have such interesting co-workers. ::)

Uh-huh.

One of them is just now UN-inviting the five County supervisors to a meeting tomorrow that she had every right to expect would attend because the Agency director included them as cc's on a memo he sent out on July 10.

Apparently, he heard from one of them that a representative from one of the supervisorial offices would be at the meeting (that, or the County Administrator got wind of it).  It seems it is a violation of "the Brown Act' (whatever that is) for supervisors to attend fact-finding meetings on projects the board members have already approved (!!???!!!???!!!???)

At any rate, he's taking it out on the project manager, a lady named Debbie, even though HE was the one who added the names to the memo that HE signed.

Additionally, it was HE who designated the memo to be sent to All County Department Heads but, in reality, only intended it to go to about half of them.  Of course, WE were supposed to know that despite the fact that the distribution for "ALL COUNTY DEPARTMENT HEADS" is a set address group.

Again, HE's mad at the Debbie in my office and his secretary, Debbie, as well, since she gave us the address list.

HE's the wounded party and HE's mad and HE's made folks feel bad about themselves and HE's making the Debbie in my office call and uninvite everyone he doesn't want at the meeting.

That's not everything, but it's all I'm gonna list right now.

Well, my 45-minute audition session ended up running 1 hour and 15 minutes, and then I just decided to grab lunch in midtown before heading to the put-in rehearsal for the new members of the cast of A Chorus Line.

They basically ran the show, with a few "jumps" here and there.  It was neat seeing some new interpretations, and I look forward to seeing the show again once everyone and everything settles.

DR edisaurus - Ah!  The Wellington.  That used to be me good-ole stand-by too.  A good room at a good rate.  -And I usually ended up getting upgraded too.  One time they gave me a two-room, two king-size bed suite, that had two bathrooms!  I was also constantly impressed by the language skills of the front desk staff: many of them spoke anywhere from four to ten(!) languages - which came in handy for the number of foreign tour groups that got booked there.

DR Miss Karen - Alas, unfortunately, most places do require a full month's rent as the security deposit.  Most places usually refund that money a week or two after you leave - after they've checked out the place for any damages.

I have heard of some places accepting a Cashier's Check for the security deposit, but they don't deposit/cash it unless they find a problem with your stay.  They just give you the check back - and then you deposit back into your own account.

I don't mind fake books.  However, when someone brings one in, that's usually a sign (to me at least) that they were trying to save money (lots of tunes in one book) rather than having something practical and useful for the auditions.

For the singer, the big problem with a fake book is that the accompaniment is totally left up to the accompanist to "fake".  Each pianist will "fake" in his/her own way, and sometimes that way my work and sometimes it won't.  When you bring in standard P/V/G sheet music, that insures that you will hear the same thing each time you audition with that music (hopefully, ideally).

Alas, I've crossed paths with many an auditionee who didn't realize that they had bought a fake book, that there was no piano accompaniment written out.  -And, consequently, didn't know the music was in the wrong key.  Or was written out "like Ella does it" or "like it is the show".  -Which means they didn't practice before they walked into the audition.  Strike One, Two and Three!!!

Except that, if his name is Jose, he'll probably be able to give you a hot tip on where to eat afterwards.

Well, actually, I usually point out to them that when they copied their music, they ended up cutting off some of the left hand notes for the pianist - and all too common, but sort of understandable, occurrence/problem.

In fact, there was one young woman this morning who had that very problem.  She also had another problem: her whole book was made up of Jason Robert Brown songs.  Which, unfortunately, exposed her other problem: she couldn't belt.  :-\

Finally got a place to stay for the first trip in on the 5th, so that's one thing out of the way.  It sounds great, and is less than half the price of a hotel, maybe more (depending on the hotel).  The only thing I'm nervous about is that there's no cable modem or DSL there - but she says as long as my laptop has wireless you can glom on to someone's - no one who's stayed there has had a problem doing so.

And if all else fails, just sign up for a Daily T-Mobile pass.  Then you can log on from almost anywhere in the city where there's a Starbucks.  Which, of course, is everywhere.  ;)  -Or a hotel, Kinko's, etc.

However, there are some free Wi-Fi zones throughout the city.  My favorite is Bryant Park.

MBarnum & JMK, or anyone-We are looking for a nice Oregon coastal town to stay in.  We normally go to Bandon but need to find one with an easier access to the beach for Sherlock.  We can't take him on too many stairs at once.

For us we want a charming town with shops & nice restaurants.

Gosh Jane, if only my friend George still had his cottage for rent. It would be perfect for you guys!

I don't remember the beaches down south, as I haven 't been there since I was a kid...but up this way (north of you)is Lincoln City and Newport, both of which are a lot of fun.

Cannon Beach is very nice also, but it might be a little too far north for you guys.

I agree, Jane, Cannon Beach is very sweet--just your kind of town.  However, the only convenient beach access has a few (concrete) steps.  Seaside (just a few miles further north) is little more tourist-y, but it's easier to walk onto the beach--virtually all of the alphabet avenues simply end at the beach.  I had never really liked Seaside before I got an all summer gig at a little community theater over there (it sadly only lasted one season).  I would drive down on Wednesday night, do Thursday and Friday night shows, a Saturday matinee and Saturday evening, then drive like a bat out of hell back to Portland to be able to get a few hours sleep before my church gig on Sunday.  But I really fell in love with Seaside that summer and it's one of the big reasons we ended up buying a Trendwest timeshare there (we can use it all over the world, but it was having a regular place to go to in Seaside that did the deal).

If you want another cool place (although I haven't been there in years), Pacific City is also very quaint, and much, much smaller than either Seaside or Cannon Beach.

Thanks to DR JULIE and DR JANE for the latest SUNSHINE BOYS congrats!!!  All appreciated.  Our read thru is on Thursday night.

We got our FANTASTICKS rehearsal schedule, which is the written down version of everybody come every night.  Tonight I did Round and Round with El Gallo and Luisa while EVERYONE else in the cast sat around looking very bored.

And about halfway through the number, I began to have doubts about my choreography talent at all.....  Two and one half hours later, it was done....but we are meeting at six tomorrow to spend an hour going over some of the fine points.

This is turning out to be a very frustrating experience for EVERYONE, and I am not sure how it will turn out.

I began my evening viewing with the newly remastered Blu-ray disc of THE FIFTH ELEMENT.

When Blu-ray premiered last year, THE FIFTH ELEMENT was one of the first Blu-ray discs, and Sony did such a rush job on it that it received universally bad reviews as a high definition version of one of the best standard DVD transfers that there ever has been. For months, Sony has promised a remastered version of the Blu-ray disc, and also set up a way for those who bought the first one to exchange it for no cost.

I didn't buy the first one after I read the awful reviews, but I bought the new one, and it is perfection. Beautiful color, rock solid sharpness, two high bitrate soundtracks. Just an amazing disc.

The movie has grown on me over the years. I was very lukewarm about it when I saw it in theaters years ago. Having seen it on paycable and then on the Superbit DVD version, I still see the flaws, but find it a very fun ride about 85% of the time. This gorgeous new high def presentation makes the enjoyment that much more palpable.

Edi-On my first trip to NY I stayed at the Wellington.  Because it was freezing there & I arrived limping, they upgraded my room to a suite, nothing fancy but I enjoyed it very much.  I found the area much nicer than my second stay in Times Square.

I lived at the Wellington for a few months 20 years ago when I worked on a film in NY, and have stayed there a few times since, with no complaints.

About 9th Avenue---that neighborhood seems fine to me. Our negative cutter is a block from there so I've walked around there a lot.

Then I watched the premiere of DAMAGES. It was commercial free so immediately it had me on its side!

I really found the show excellent. It jumps back and forth in time, but there's no problem discerning which time period we're in at any one point, and there's a really strong cast of character actors. And Close is playing a very sly snake in the grass super-lawyer, the kind of role she relishes and excels with.

Looking forward to following this for the remaining 12 episodes.

Well... That happens too (unfortunately).  Strangely, "those people" tend to be conductors (who used to be full-time pianists).

Myself, I will usually fill in an accompaniment - especially for standards - if the chord symbols are provided.  However, I also ask the singer if they want what's printed on the page, or if they'd like something "fuller".  -Especially since most "standard" sheet music doubles the melody in the printed accompaniment.  *I don't "like" "helping" singer's with their melody line.  ;)

Corwin Townsend and Suzanne Cohen. I think he will get away with it.

The DNA evidence matches him, but the witnesses had trouble identifying him.

Nope don't know them. Will be interesting. DNA goes pretty far in most cases

Well it's very late. I was at the office until midnight. That was fabulous! It was SOOO quiet and I got so much done.  Now I need to get a few hours sleep so I can get up and go to work :)

I began a movie at about nine-thirty, figuring I'd be done by eleven-thirty, but I just checked the running time and it's a two-and-a-half hour movie, so I shan't be finishing it this evening.

It was a dark and stormy night....

Oh, I guess not, there was a slight chance of thunderstorms, but with a clear sky and lots of stars, I doubt it's going to happen

I had an early morning, too....and this late night stuff is for the owls.

And yet....and yet....it has gotten "cool" for the first time in WEEKS and I'm just loving having my windows open and feeling the fog-chilled air wafting through my condo.

Tonight, I went to my sister's house and she and my niece (her daughter) had assembled their shelf units for the HD widescreen TV that they're going to get tomorrow from Costco...47 inches!  Anyway, I came over and anchored all the shelf units to the wall.  Hopefully, if there's an earthquake, the whole set of shelves won't come crashing down on anything...hopefully. ::)

Tomorrow, I'm going to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (where I usher quite a bit) and will be part of a focus group.  I don't know exactly what we'll be focusing on, but I'm sure that it'll be interesting...and they said that they'd feed us!  Nothing says, "Sure, I'll be a part of your focus group!" like free food. ;)
