Title: CONDIMENTS AND GARNISHES
Post by: bk on May 15, 2005, 12:01:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the notes were spiced up with condiments and garnishes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they find some A1 Steak Sauce.

BK-
Do you have fond memories of the Z Channel?
I'm watching a documentary about it right now. It sounds like it was incredible.

Like BK, I also love only Heinz 57 ketchup (not catsup)!  Mustard...I can can take it or leave it, but if I eat any German sausages, they must have yellow mustard.

Mayo is fine, as long as there isn't too much.  That would be most unseemly!  The only time where too much mayo is not a problem is when I have tomatoes on the sandwich/burger/whatever, and the tomatoes and mayo are touching (not in that way! ;)) and they mix and make their own kind of tomato-y mayo.

Onions are ALWAYS welcome on a sandwich...unless it's peanut butter and jelly.  That would not be good at all. :P

Otherwise, relish and/or pickles are good.  And Skipper's has as dill tartar sauce that I love.  I like dill!

Z channel was great.  They, of course, had the good taste to help make Nudie Musical into the cult hit it is.  Where was the documentary shown?

Documentary on IFC. "Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession"
I had never heard of the channel until tonight.
Just a great documentary on several levels:
--In expressing what the channel was and how it was something the likes of which will never be seen again
--Incredible footage from dozens of great films, not brief clips, but lengthy clips
--The ultimate tragedy of the loss of the channel and the murder-suicide by the guy who oversaw its programming
--Excellent interview segments from Altman to Jacqueline Bisset
Just a real eye opener all around.

Also, I might add, this documentary was made in a simple style. The footage consisted of tons of film footage, shots of the Z Channel's magazine, interview subjects speaking and some slow-mo LA scenery.

You know something is done well when it makes you nostalgic for something you didn't even experience!

Dear Friend BK, it's been lousy here with allergies as well.  Of course, part of the problem is that every blooming tree on 82nd Street and the trees in Central Park and Riverside Park have their pollen wafted through my window and up my sinuses by an ill wind blowing no good whatsoever.  Bring your medications with you.

DRGeorge, I loved your photos, but I fear your back yard is the main source of allergy problems on the west coast! ;D

DRTCB, I, too, liked the film PHANTOM OF THE OPERA more than the stage show, but what was a magical scenic effect onstage ofthe candelabra rising from the floor was totally moronic in the film.  The other big problem I had was chronologic: Mme Giry is about twice Raoul's and Christine's age, being Meg's mother, but in the black and white sequences she looks no older than Patrick Wilson in his LITTLE BIG MAN makeup.  If he's 80 at the end, she's got to be pushing 100!  There were other silly things as well:  Emmy Rossum wearing a gown cut to her nipples and only a flimsy cape to visit her father's tomb during a snowfall,  Emmy Rossum in her underwear on the roof of the Paris Opera and Patrick Wilson refusing to acknowledge that she has a problem with frozen nipples.  I thought the film looked great, much better than the show; Joel Schumaker is living proof that you can take the director out of shop window decorating but you can't always take the decorator out of the director.

This must be the first question of the day on a Sunday in a long time (if not the first) as it is usually is a free for all day.

So my answer is mayo.

and to get the bad joke answer out of the way......
Favorite condiment: Ramses or Shieks

Now, see the line of the table at the bottom.  That's where the frame line should end in 1:85.  See with top of the window?  That's where the frame line should end in 1:85.  That is why open matte is a travesty.

Last night, bk wrote: "MattH, if you are talking about that documentary on The Third Man that TMC has been airing, that is just about the worst piece of merde I've ever seen.  The writer, producer, director ought to have his writing, producing, directing license revoked, since the documentary was more about him and his offensive hip with-it technique than it was about The Third Man.  If they cut to the projector with the film running amok one more time I would have flown to the UK to personally brain the cretin."

Yep, that's the one. I found it VERY annoying to have portions of the film being shown on lampshades and blinds and vases.

However, there was some interesting information imparted about Welles' demands and Selznick's involvement that I didn't know so in that regard, I didn't find the doc a total loss. But the motif for the film was definitely irritating, and while I had planned to dub a DVD-R of it to add to my Criterion DVD, I thought better of it after it concluded, and I didn't do it.

I’m starting to think I have Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom around here.  Late yesterday, I went into the back yard and found a two foot black snake!

Now if you have to run across a snake, a black snake is a very fine fellow to find.  They are non poisonous and are very good to have around.  My only beef with them is that they eat lizards.

Most snakes will turn tail and “run” if given the chance and that’s just what this guy did.  I chased him to make sure he went out of the yard so the dogs wouldn’t harm him and that was that.

DR Jane, it wouldn’t be worth the bandwidth for me to list EVERY Sci Fi book I have read.  Anyway, I bet I’ve forgotten more then I can name.    ;D :D

Yes, I forgot about the projecting the film on window blinds and even some of the interviewees faces.  I mean, really!

Definitely some interesting information, too, which made this idiot's unfortunate "style" choices even more annoying.

DRCharlesPogue, Your HERCULES is the cover of our local TV guide (the one you get in the paper).

There is an article in it as well.    Would you like a scan of either or both?  I didn't know it was going to be on so late on a Monday.  Yikes!

You know what a hard time I have keeping my eyes open after nine--I may have to wait for the DVD as well.

Ketchup is also my favorite condiment. Of course, Heinz 57 is the best of the name brands, but I'm not so much of a purist that I'm willing to spend the extra DOLLARS to buy it over my local store brand. I buy it when it's on sale and the store brand at all other times.

I've never liked mustard as a topping though, of course, I've cooked with it many times.

DR Danise, 1.85 refers to the aspect ratio of most non-anamorphic movies: 1.85:1 in terms of width:height.

A Cinemascope/Panavision/Super 35 film is 2.35:1 (or other slightly variable ratios in that vicinity).

Thank you, DR Matt.  I know very little about photography.  One of the reasons I love my digital camera.  It has a feature that allows you to pick a picture that looks like the shot you want to take and when you pick it, it sets the camera automatically.

I could never do all of the settings myself.

My favorite garnish is definitely those cute little sprigs of parsley. That is one cute little vegetable. Due to some rampant food issues we have in this house, we are forbidden to eat, cook with, or talk about mayonnaise in front of my dad. It makes him gag because he thinks it is HEINOUS. Long story why, and you do NOT want me to tell it to you. He has similar feelings about salad dressing, and you do NOT want to get me started on pickles. Just mentioning pickles to him makes him make a face. However, he has absolutely no problem scarfing down a steak in front of me. Hmmm.

But I digress. I like to mix condiments with foods they wouldn't usually go with. Like chips with frosting. Strawberries with salsa (delicious!). Pizza with chocolate. I am a fantastic cook.

Thank-you, Danise!

Right now, since Peggy's surgery has healed, we're planning on tackling her mange problems.  Everyone keeps telling us how pretty she is, and what a wonderful brindle coat she has.  But we won't be able to find her a new home until the mange has been cured.

Strangely, the idea of finding her a new home doesn't bother me.  Der B and I seem to be unusual, in that we can love animals enough to hand them over to new owners.  My usual line, when leaving a dog with another rescue group, is to tell the dog "Have a good life."

Strange thoughts while munching on the "Darth Mix" M&Ms:

They're tasty little morsels.  Dark chocolate mixes well with the M&M formula.  And the colors are nice: black, navy, burgundy, grey, and the most darling lavender.

Second, what about a second TOD: Strange Star Wars casts.

For example, what if Star Wars were to be cast with the stars of sit-coms?  I Love Lucy, for example.

Lucille Ball as Princess Leia
Desi Arnaz as Han Solo
Vivian Vance as C3P0
"Little Ricky" as R2D2
and
William Frawley as Darth Vader.

(Unfortunately, the whole I Love Lucy-centric casting falls apart at that point, because there aren't enough regular actors in the series to cover all the roles in the film.)

Strawberries, chiles, mint, some sweet onion...

Trigger is such a cute puppy!! When my mom gets back and sees that picture she's going to say, "Oooooh, I want a puppy!"

I hope Peggy can find a good home. Some of them are harder to part with than others. I cried when Orlando got adopted, but I know he's happy now. He has a great family, another cat and a ferret to play with, and a sweet little girl who really loves him. I really wanted to keep him myself, but I know that if I'd kept all my fosters, I'd have 120+ cats. And THAT would be nuts.

Favorite condiments when nuking some leftovers, just to give the flavor more kick:

Soy Sauce
Sriracha Chili Sauce

We have several types of mustard in the kitchen.  Dijon.  American Yellow.  A few more exotic types that der B loves.

I have yet to make my own mayonaise.

Another sitcom casting for Star Wars:

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]It's The Luke Skywalker Show, starring...[/move]

Dick Van Dyke as Luke Skywalker
Mary Tyler Moore as Princess Leia
Morey Amsterdam as Han Solo
Rose Marie as C3P0
Larry Mathews as R2D2

with
Ann Morgan Guilbert as Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi
Jerry Paris as Grand Moff Tarkin
Richard Deacon as Chewbaca

and featuring

Carl Reiner as Darth Vader.

The only problem with this is that DVD and MTM end up as brother and sister by the time we get to Return of the Jedi.  But the whole sex thing in the Star Wars saga is wierd.  Jedi are forbidden to marry?  What was Lucas thinking?  (Personally, I think Yoda was compensating for other things with that lightsaber of his.)

Pacific Northwesterners-
Just read a fascinating article in this magazine we get called "Ready Made". Great mag, by the way. But the article was about the McMenamin brothers, who have made it their life's goal to restore old theatres around Portland, such as the Bagdad. They also took a place called the Franklin School and turned it into a neat hotel. They sound like pretty cool guys. They apparently own 52 lovingly restored establishments in Oregon and Washington.

And yes Trigger is sooooooooo cute!!  But FORTUNATELY, "cute" doesn't make me want a dog.  I guess I'm just not that maternal...unless it's that I just think about what they might look like when they're grown up (no longer "cute") and any medical problems that they might have and what it would take to train them, which I've never done before...all of that adds up to me thinking "Trigger is sooooooooo cute, but I'm glad he's not mine!" ;D

Elsewhere...

It was seventy-five years ago, in 1930, that Ellen Church became the first flight attendant, aka stewardess, caring for eleven passengers aboard a United Airlines tri-motor Boeing 80A as they few from San Francisco to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Ms. Church, a registered nurse, is credited with coming up with the idea of having flight attendants aboard airliners, and led a remarkable life (http://www.crescoia.com/ellenchurch.html).

I've been able to find no reason for why the eleven passengers were flying from San Francisco to Cheyenne, however.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, I guess I'm back to normal.  I got out of bed at 12:30(pm).

;)

And, alas, I did not got to Lancaster today.  Although, with the weird weather pattern we're in right now, I have a feeling I wouldn't be enjoying the time up there as much as I would - with or without Andy's sister.  ;)

Unfortunately, the other event I was hoping to attend today was cancelled due to the very possible inclement weather:  John Michael's soccer game.  :(  At least his team won the game they played yesterday.

Oddly, Fox Movie Channel showed three old FLY movies yesterday, THE FLY, RETURN OF THE FLY and CURSE OF THE FLY. Tonight they show THE FLY II with Eric Stoltz. But at no point will they show Pogue's THE FLY. Is that not a Fox picture?

Der Brucer has proposed that he and I attend a book reading and signing today, at Browseabout Books, the best of the local bookstores.  Not that there's much competition on that front.   :-\

The book being featured is Identify Yourself: The 50 Most Common Birding Identification Challenges, by Bill Thompson III, a local writer.

He does come up with different things to do, der Brucer does.

Condiments:

Mayo:  Duke's - I happily discovered this stuff while in Richmond.  A true Southern "delicacy" if you will.  Great mayo!  And it contains no sugar - it's only "sweetened" with cider vinegar.  It's also not as processed as other brands, and not full of preservatives - it has a "normal" shelf life of a few months, rather than a few years.  I was a "salad dressing" fan for a while, but that changed once I discovered Duke's.  *Duke's is also the perfect mayo for making homemade pimiento cheese!

Ketchup - Heinz 57.  I remember as a kid being already able to discern the difference between Heinz and everything else (Del Monte, Hunts, etc.) due to my family's semi-frequent visits to fast-food establishments.  Catsup just never did it for me.

Mustard - Yellow, Brown, Dijon, Horseradish(!), Grainy...  I like it all.  I came across a "white" mustard once made especially for pretzels - hard or soft.  I must find it again sometime - sooooo good.

Hot sauces - I like Tabasco, but I usually prefer Frank's, Crystal, etc.  Sometimes the fermented quality of Tabasco doesn't sit well with me.  The aforementioned Sriracha "Rooster Sauce" is also a constant condiment companion, along with many of those other Asian chile/garlic/vinegar concoctions (sambal oleck, etc.).

As for ketchup, I generally spike it with some hot sauce.  Tabasco used to be my condiment of choice there, but Sriracha works better, IMO.

DR Sandra - If you can find a bottle of Tamari - the real Japanese soy sauce - try a splash or two on top of some vanilla ice cream.  The San-J corporation makes a very good one - and it's made in Virginia.  It's a little more pricey than Kikkoman, but it's sooooo much better.  When I played for their "welcome" reception at the Governor's Mansion in Richmond a couple of years ago, they served vanilla ice cream topped with tamari for dessert.  A truly pleasant culinary surprise.

*San-J also has a fine line of other assorted condiments, all worth the time to seek out - and the money to spend.

Growing up in a Filipino household, vinegar - usually spiked with cloves of garlic, and patis - fish sauce - were always on the table.  In addition to soy sauce.  There's always an old salad dressing bottle in the fridge that my mom has filled with vinegar, garlic cloves and sometimes some chile peppers.  Very good on grilled meats, especially pork.

As for the patis... Truly stinky stuff, but when used sparingly and properly, it's a nice salt substitute.  It's the Filipino version of the Thai and Vietnamese nuoc nam.

Here is a Sunday topic:

What are your 3 top favorite movies studios. The studios that made the films you are most fond of, that give you that warm, comfy feeling.

Mine are:

UNIVERSAL (later known as UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL). This studio made many of my favorite horror, sci-fi, westerns, and dramas...and had a wonderful stable of players in the 30s, 40s, and 50s people like Allison Hayes, William Reynolds, Rex Reason, Anne Gwynne, Evelyn Ankers, Keith Andes, Donald Cook, Lori Nelson, Gregg Palmer, Race Gentry, Audie Murphy, Mamie Van Doren, Rock Hudson and on and on.

A.I.P. (American International Pictures). In the 1950s they were responsible for ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, REFORM SCHOOL GIRL, EARTH VS. THE SPIDER, GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW, THE UNDEAD, GUNSLINGER, SORORITY GIRL, VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT and many more of my favorites. And of course they employed both Allison Hayes and June Kenney!

ALLIED ARTISTS. Allison and June seemed to divide there time between Allied Artists and AIP in the late 50s and this studio brought forth such classics as HOT CAR GIRL, THE DISEMBODIED, FROM HELL IT CAME, THE OKLAHOMAN, TEENAGE DOLL, The Bomba films, The Bowery Boys films, etc.

Runners up would be Columbia Pictures, United Artists, and Toho Studios.

I think we all understand the sycophantic need to defer to (and praise, and perhaps ultimately worship) a creative genius, especially if he signs the paychecks. But I still can't figure out how all the many hundreds of people who work for George Lucas managed to let him make three heartbreakingly mediocre "Star Wars" prequels, without once suggesting to him that his ideas, screenplays and direction over the past decade have been a stunning embarrassment. It seems none of these lackeys -- producers, art staff, mouse clickers, key grips, lunch ladies -- ever suggested to the Flanneled One that Jar Jar Binks was a bad idea, or that people didn't want to see Darth Vader played by a child actor. Does anyone ever tell Lucas "no"?...

Filibusters, faith and the Washington tradition of faking it

which is why I rise today to speak on behalf of the filibuster, a noble parliamentary device that has come under grievous assault in recent weeks for being a supposed tool of those who would do battle against God Himself; that, by threatening to filibuster, the secular-humanist minority in the U.S. Senate is supposedly blocking the appointment of judges of faith, and that faith is good and wholesome -- as American as apple pie and Mom -- which may be true but is a contention that belies the critics' central argument, since it is a hallmark of the beleaguered American mom that she often has to talk until she is blue in the face, which is precisely what filibustering is; moreover, once one condones the discrimination against the blue of face, one may just as well condone discrimination against the brown of face, the yellow of face and so forth, which is not only un-American but a slippery slope of bias leading inevitably to discrimination against people with big, hairy moles on their faces, like my grandma, and I, for one, resent it;...

May Your Feet Grow Wings
A man, a shoe, an obsession
By John Kelly

Sunday, May 15, 2005; Page W18

I sing of shoes and the man, of boot and loafer and lace-up, of sneaker and flip-flop.

But of all of these shoes, I sing of one shoe in particular: stout of sole and firm of heel, the upper shot with tiny holes and edged in serrated leather, anointed on its toe with a curious medallion and marked over the instep by a sign, a sign as recognizable as the Z of Zorro or the ankh of the sun god Ra.1 See it? The symbol? From where you're standing it looks like a lazy W, but from where I'm standing -- looking down at the well-polished shoes on my feet -- it resembles a bird in flight about to flap its powerful wings and soar higher still.

I sing of the wingtip.

Be sure to read the "foot" notes.  ;)

That's well said. To me, it's like people who get excited when the Platters come to town when really it's like one of the original Platters' grandsons and a bunch of new "Platters". People go to the show and suspend their disbelief and convince themselves that what they're seeing actually has some connection to the Platters. People wanted STAR WARS movies so badly, they are convincing themselves that these recent movies have any connection to the original three.

But if one is completely honest, the heinous Jar Jar is really just an extension of the heinous Ewoks who Lucas admitted he added because he thought they'd make great plush toys.

Founding Fictions
Have you heard the one about Thomas Jefferson?

Book talk at Ladies Auxiliary Historical Society of Pokeweed County (transcript):

Thank you, Betty--Bobbi, excuse me--for that very generous introduction. It's a great honor to be here. I had a lovely drive out here and got to see so many trees and fields and, of course, your really remarkable strip mine. Now that is what I call a hole! In the best sense of the word. In any case, I'm thrilled to be here and to have this opportunity to speak to the four of you.

Now, you may ask, why did I title my book Unfounded Courage? Because it was time for the American people to read the unvarnished, unromanticized, unsubstantiated story of the men who established this nation, a tale that reveals not only their quirks, eccentricities and, dare one say, perversions, but also echoes the titles of books that have sold millions of copies already.

Countless biographies of the Founders are already out there, telling you about Washington's bravery, Jefferson's genius, Franklin's inventiveness and so on. But I can say with confidence that mine is the only book in which Jefferson is eaten by a shark.

Danise, scans of the TV cover and article would be  nice.

Garnishes and condiments:

Ketchup for hamburgers and meatloaf.  Mustard...Guldens's brown mustard, please...for hot dogs and sausages.  I do not understand how anyone can put ketchup on hot dogs or sausages.  It just doesn't work.  Either mustard (brown always) or mayo on lunch meats and ham.

Sweet gherkins, the world's greatest pickles!

Onions on everything, in everything.  I love 'em.  A good thick slice of onion on a burger is God's gift.

Speaking of fuel oil hunks, here's another thing that the hip young fundraiser told me about current trends.  His most successful fundraiser has been auctioning off young hunk firemen.  Apparently, the bidding gets quite fierce because apparently young girls, whether they have boyfriends or husbands, throw aside their morals and inhibitions when it comes to these young hunky firemen, who, the young hip fundraiser tells me, "put out" on the dates with the winners.  Firemen have become the new sex symbol to young women, and they crave them and go after them with a fervor.  It's just another reason to know that the trendy young people continue to pust the world to new lows.

Well, Bachelor Auctions - Firemen, Businessmen, Baseball Players, Policemen, etc... - have been around for a while.  As for Firemen, in particular, their popularity re-peaked after 9/11 - even the NYFD put out their own calendar - and still do.  And remember that semi-scandalous "Sex & The City" episode?

Now, as for the men "putting out".... Hmmm...  Well, that's a totally different matter.  Between two consenting adults.

I really love MGM, Warners, and Fox mainly because their musical output puts all others to shame. (Not that there weren't fine musicals at other studios, but if I walk over to the shelf that holds my musicals, invariably the one that I'll pick to watch comes from one of those three studios.)

Speaking of picking a movie off the shelf, when I finished with TWISTER this afternoon, I took HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS off the shelf. I've seen it probably ten times, but wanted to see it on the new player.

One thing I've learned is that the newer the transfer, the better it looks on this new player. It really accentuates the defects on older transfers and they don't look as good. TWISTER would probably look much better on one of my older players.

Haven't seen any of their theaters and such, but have been to a couple McMenamin's restaurants around Portland.  Pretty good food and they brew some tasty beers, too.

Thank you Jed.

Good Morning from OZ.
Tomorrow is not just another day. Already I"m quite nervous.

Thnak you all and sundried for the thoughts. OzDerek should get around to posting on Wednesday or Thursday. (I guess that means Tuesday or Wednesday!)

Now! Which Teddy Bear do I take. I'd prefer a Fireman.

I like the studio question.
DISNEY:  when I was a kid, I wanted to be a Disney animator; any Disney film that came to the Paramoount Theatre had my cousins, my brother and me in the audience.
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX:  Rodgers & Hammerstein and Marilyn Monroe.
WARNER BROTHERS:  for CAMELOT and MY FAIR LADY, if not for PAJAMA GAME and others.

In other news...

I ended up heading out to get some Chinese Food for dinner: Fried Wontons, Hot & Sour Soup, Hunan Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice.  Enough food for a meal or two or three.  *Although, I'm guessing when my brother stops by later to look at my Mom's computer, he'll end up eating the rest of it - which is fine.  -All in all, a very good meal.

Oh, and it was cooked "a la minute".  Well, maybe a la two minutes!  By the time I had finished selecting my CONDIMENTS, duck sauce and hot chile oil, my order was already sitting on the counter ready for me to take it away.  I almost thought the cooks had read my mind as I was walking in the door.  However, when I opened the containers, everything was piping hot and cooked to perfection.  -I guess it pays to go when things are slow.

Hello!

Today, DH Richard and I went grocery shopping fairly early and I put a lemon-stuffed chicken in the oven to roast while I went to Dayton to a co-worker's open house.  She has just remodeled her bathroom and kitchen and wanted to show them off.  When I got home, DH and I had a lovely dinner - cooked by me, which is pretty unusual these days.

I hope I'm not too late to send successful surgery vibes to DR Tomovoz!

BK, yes, the heat here in LA is horrible.  Tewkes who loves his walks , just wants to get his business done and return home.  I hope this does not forbode a "long, hot summer".

The Lovely Wife & I have just spent the afternoon trying to beat the LA heat by soaking in the Jacuzzi and listening to the cast album of SPAMALOT.

I glad Eric Idle is making a pile of money on the show and I sure hope all the musical numbers work in context with the show, because as a stand alone album of songs it's hopelessly banal.  Somewhat tired and laboured.  The tunes forgettable and the lyrics sound like they came out of someone's college review and are rather trite.   This is an album I suspect I will never listen to again.

Der B got his bird book, all signed and everything.  I had fun spotting some of the porpoises around town.  They're sculptures, a basic fiberglass form that local artists have dolled up in various fashions.  Sometime later in the season they'll be auctioned off for charity.

We were getting spots of rain, so we headed home and finally got around to watching the film version of POTO.  Neither of us was impressed.

I have been E & T and also T & E but I have been busy busy, busy!

Yesterday after the meeting witha client, (getting some extra paper signed) getting eggy sandwiches for the family (ah, what a cook I am! )

I cleaned out the car, then took it for a lovely oil change, with extra charges paid for new radiator coolant and then took it to the car wash (since I got a free one with the oil change)

After the car was all nice and sparkling clean the Vixmom  Trio  headed into the city of New York.  Since we had a destination at 5th & 49th as well as 85th & Park we decided to park uptown (found a great place at  79th & Madison onlt $16.84 for the day)  we drove back and forth through Central Park just because we could and The Vixter was enchanted.. she didn't know there was a park in NYC.

(Oh dear, we must get into the city a bit more!!)

We grabbed a cab and head for the infamous American Girl Place.  The Vixter had gift certificates burning a hole on her pocker.  Mr. Vixmom had never toured the store before ,  JHis MO is to stand in the lobby looking helpless until a shopgirl  comes up to him and brings him whatever it is he wants to buy.  Well, he got the tour this time.  The Vixter showed him every section of every floor. When we got to the fourth floor she made her purchase  a set of Bitty Twins.

We then made the mistake of offering tolet her choose the dinner restaurant withthe proviso that it could not be mcDonalds OR the AGP.  She chose the Fridays directly across the street.  The prices were $10 over what they usually are, the service was terrible and the food forgettable... but she loved it.   "Finally" she said, "Finally I get to eat at a Fridays!!"

Well, I'm off to bed.  Tomorrow morning is a short time at Rodgers & Hammerstein and then pre-op instructions at home.  Today was my last bit of solid food until probably Friday, depending on how I'm feeling.

Tonight I watched BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS, Stephen Fry's film of Waugh's novel VILE BODIES, which I don't know and now would like to read.  I enjoyed the film and its 30s fashion quite a lot, although I expected a comedy and found its tone more bleak than I expected.  The cast was quite good.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES was a hoot, and it seems to be spiraling out of control for the season finale.

So, DRRodzinski is on for Saturday night, BK, so the partay has begun.

Finally we grabbed a cab for the climax to the day

"A Little of What You Fancy"  starring Mr. Anthony Morelli and some other people  ;D

What a wonderful evening!!! Mr. Vixmom was especially impressed.  He told us that there was a show that ran on the BBC for years that was a British Music Hall and that this was every bit as good.  He said that it was quite authntic and with one exception, the the British accents were quite well done.  In fact when we saw the actor who played the chairman, he was quite suprised that he was not actually English.

Out very own dear bk was invoked in the pages of the program,  one of the actors, Mr. Kristopher Monroe, whom many of you met at bk's last book reading/signing  wrote in his bio "
Quote
recently appeared in Bruce Kimmel's musical  Bus and Truck!

Unfortunately both the Vixter and Mr. Morelli were uite tired after the long day and we were unable to go for after show refreshments, however we did have an opportunity to have a nice chat with DR Ben before the show and during the "interval", and with Ben and his Anthiny after the show.

Stupidly, I took no pictures (well of course I couldn;t during the show as that is forbidden, but afterwards, well that was just forgetfulness)

We walked back to the parking garage, collected the car and began the drive back to the Island of Long.  Mr.l Vixmom decide he needed soem water so we stopped at the Duane Reade at 79th and Fourth Avenue (ior Third perhaps?)  while Mr. V ran in for some water, I stayed behind and noticed smoke arising from the hood

I turned off the engne lifted the hood... remember that coolant I paid extra for on page 6?  Well they darn well didn't put it in!!! (I shall have some harsh words for them when they reopen on Monday)  When Mr. V aried back at the car I explained the porblem and off he went back to the Duane Reade  where they did not have automobile radiator coolant in stock (and they call themselves a drug store!) so he bought two gallons of Poland Spring water which seemed to work fine, thank you very much.

and then we drove home and lived happily ever after

Oh, today I went to church where we celebrated Pentecost by wearing red and parading children through the church aisles, who sang while waving cardboard doves and flames around.  Then we all stood out on the church lawn and  while our Pastor released a white dove into the air.

The I came home and weeded the front and rear flower gardens, raked up all the left over leaves, used by little gardener's claw to loosen the soil and mix in enriched potting soil and then I transplanted three flats of impatians.  I also seeded the rear garden with marigolds.  Two more flats still plant.  Oh my shoulders ache.

Thank you Vixmom.

The Old Time Music Hall Programme was from Leeds Yorkshire.  The MC was the father of Andrew Sacks (SP) who was Manuel in Fawlty Towers. The audience dressed in appropriate fashion for turn of the century theatre

Leeds still has a theatre devoted to the Music Hall tradition.

The TV show was quite popular here in OZ.

Yes.  Mr. V said that they audience was required to come in Victorian dress, anyone not so attired would not be admitted, and they had a three year waiting list to attend as an audience member!

He was wondering if the show was still running or if it were available on DVD.  Would you know?

I'll see if I can find out. The show is still running "live" in Leeds but I don't think it is televised. I'll check for availablity of the DVds but I think it may only be old Video from the BBC if at all.

I left my room because I heard my brother calling my name, and ended up going on a four-and-a-half-hour field trip with him to the mall, Krispy Kreme, and a bunch of other places. His boss's daughter's birthday is coming up and he needed me to help him pick something out for her. He's only ever met this girl once, so I'm not sure why he needs to get her a birthday present, but there you go.

He did his Jerry Seinfeld impression for me. It sounded exactly like Marlon Brando.

Good Evening!

Well, I think I've done enough laundry for tonight.  Whew!  Guess I should make sure I have my pit blacks for Mamma Mia! this week.

In other news...

I've finally caught up.  I watched the ABC line-up and "Desperate Housewives" just ended.  I'm taping "Grey's Anatomy" because I have to go to the store and get stuff for my Relay For Life team's bi-weekly bakesale.  I haven't brought anything for the last couple of bakesales and I feel guilty about it.  I must bake/bring something!  I'm thinking fudge!  MMMmmm!!  It's actually quick and easy. ;D ;D ;D

DR vixmom - Quite the action packed day you had!  Glad to know you made it home safely.  I guess something or someone was telling Mr. vixmom to stop for water.

The British Embassy here in DC holds an Annual Music Hall... well.. annually.  It's a fund-raiser.  It's quite the festive affair.  It's been a while since I've been, but quite the authentic evening of entertainment.

Earlier today, I was compiling a 2-CD compilation of songs for a woman that I work with who is retiring from the library after 31 years!  She's the administrative secretary and knows everything!  I didn't have to choose any of the songs (fortunately), but since I have the equipment to copy and burn CDs, I said that I'd put it all together.  The CDs will be played at her goodbye lunch, which will be a spaghetti feed-fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life!  She's also on the team and thought that instead of being taken out to a fancy restaurant, she'd like to have a guaranteed money-maker fundraiser lunch (they're always popular) for her send-off! ;D

One of the shows I MDed for my alma mater after graduating was the melodrama East Lynne.  I spent hours, well days in the Library of Congress Music Reading Room researching songs and various musical "ditties".  Fun, fun, fun!  And the woman in charge of the silent movie music archive, Gillian Anderson, helped me find cue sheets and other "mood music" for the production.  By the time I was done with all my research, I had binders full of music and songs.

Once we were finally cast and in rehearsal, it was fun deciding where songs could possibly go, and then going through my 'research' to see what could work in each place.  All those Balfe songs!

*On the unfortunate side of things, our director had a stroke a few days before going into tech.  He made a full recovery, but since there was no real assistant director, there was no one around to decide/authorize any cuts in the show once we were up and running in tech.  However, I guess were more or less authentic since the show ended up running about 3 hours (with the two intermissions). ;)

Donald, Donald
Here is my answer true
I'm half crazy all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage , you can't afford a carriage
But I'll be damned , if I'll be crammed
On a bicycle built for two!
