When I hear of Long Island, the first thing that comes to mind is "I can't wait 'till we get to Quogue."

The rain has turned itself on and off and on all day today. Cold, wet, miserable. And hasn't gotten out of the 40s.

60 is the forecast high for tomorrow. We'll see.

I have liked Ben Affleck in some roles (the title role in DAREDEVIL, for instance), but I have loathed him in some others (Jack Ryan in THE SUM OF ALL FEARS, a perfect example of miscasting).

Matt Damon I've tended to like in most everything I've seen him do, but perhaps for my generation, Butch and Sundance belong to Newman and Redford and no other actors could possibly compete.

Or maybe it's just me. I simply think it's a lousy, dreadful idea. Like the PSYCHO remake, I'll have zero interest in seeing a new version.

I watched last Friday's MONK first this afternoon. Funny episode that even included a mystery even though it was more about Mr. Monk falling victim to amnesia and being persuaded by a deranged Laurie Metcalf that he was her husband.

Even better for me was seeing his stalwart three friends worrying so much about him and being so happy to have him back in their lives despite his ability to drive them all crazy. That was very touching to me.

Next up was LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT which featured a lead guest starring role by troubled actor Brad Renfro. He's a talented actor, and it's a pity he can't seem to get his life straightened out enough to take full advantage of his gifts. He was very effective in this episode.

Finished up the afternoon with another CSI: MIAMI episode, this one featuring two cases. One involved identity theft which had a neat twist. The person whose identiy was being stolen wasn't exactly an innocent victim. The crook actually ended up being the nicer of the two women.

The other case involved a woman being swallowed by a snake with the snake dying of a drug overdose. The drug case then led Horatio back to one of his most chilling nemeses from the second season. Very effective capper to this case.

Tonight, before HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER comes on, I'll watch last week's THE OFFICE, and that will effectively clear off the DVR all of the shows recorded from last week.

Of course, it starts all over tonight with two new shows added to the DVR.

MattH, by any chance did you record and save the last two Book of Daniel episodes? I missed then both and would be very grateful if you could supply me with copies.  Thanks!

Question for DRs Matthew and Ron Pulliam...

So, which one of you is picking me up at the airport on Thursday?

;)

-I need to spend some time today getting my schedule figured out for Thursday.  Get my bearings in order.  I'll probably just hang around the Curran... Any suggestions?

I think you should take the BART...exit the Powell Street station...and you'll be only a few blocks from the Curran.

What hotel are you booked into?

Why are you coming on a Thursday and why only for that day?

There is a phenomenal deli across the street from the Curran called Sam's....and down the street, diagonally across the corner from the A.C.T. (which is next door to the Curran) is Max's...WONderful food!

Have any recommendations come your way, DR Jose, as to where to eat?

North Beach had some GREAT Italian eateries.  I imagine their are still some around.

Fisherman's Wharf is supposed to be terrific for seafood, although it's a bit touristy.

I'd be interested in what DR Matthew recommends.

DR Jose, it is too bad you couldn't make a pit stop in Portland, Oregon while you are on the west coast!

Pit stop...TOO funny...cuz that's why he's coming here...to make a "pit" stop in the Curran orchestra pit.

JRand55, I am listening to a 2 CD set (borrowed from the library) of Pedro Vargas, the crooner who sang those songs in Aventurera! Some beautiful songs!

And I believe the real "Aventurera" is currently planning a visit to the US sometime this year.  It will be opening in San Francisco in March, and possibly makes it's way to LA.

Viva the nostalgia

Yes - based on the movie!  Bet I DON'T get to see it - but maybe they will record it!
But can there really be an Aventurera without Ninon Sevilla?

I'm pretty sure I'll be relying on the BART to get me to and from the Curran from the airport.  -But I need to see how late it runs, and/or early it opens.

As for the brevity of my visit...  Well...

Lestat closes next Sunday, January 29.  Damn Yankees closes the following Sunday, February 5.

Awake And Sing will be opening in the Kreeger at the Arena Stage this coming Thursday.  -The Kreeger is the proscenium house in the Arena Stage complex.  A few seasons ago, Arena would "darken" the "other" show when a show was opening.  This makes it easier for those in the other show to see the show - and be a part of a very appreciative opening night audience.  And, on the practical side, it eases up the parking situation and the demands on the production office personnel.  So...

Damn Yankees will be dark this Thursday.  -However, we will have two show on Wednesday, and then it's back to normal Friday night.  So...

A couple of weeks ago, I checked some flights, my frequent flyer balance, and a couple of other things, and I figured, "What the heck?"  -It will be my only chance to see the show from the audience.  So...

I will be leaving Dulles at 7:00am(EST) and getting into SFO at 10:02am(PST).  I'm just gonna be traveling with my overnight case - change of clothes and toiletries - and my laptop.  Right now, I'm basically planning to "rough it" while I'm in San Fran.  In other words, no hotel.

I'll try to get some sight-seeing done.  Maybe pop into rehearsal - if they're having one.  Hang out with Brad and Andy, the conductor and his assistant.  Then see the show.  Then hang out after the show for a bit, then probably head back to SFO since I have to fly out at 6:05am.

Yes, it will be a long day, but as long as I keep my watch on EST, I should be fine.  And since the turn around time is so fast, I shouldn't have any jet lag issues.

-Oh, and, trust me, if I could spend more time in San Francisco, I would.  But I have no sub for Damn Yankees - I'm the Assistant MD/Conductor, so I'm already a "sub" as it is.  *And, thankfully, after checking the weather forecasts for this week, it looks like the weather will cooperate with my flights.

And it looks like NBC is not going to make any more DANIELs after the six episodes are finished. CONVICTION goes into that time slot after the Olympics.
