And the word of the day is: RIDENT!
Missing Tubby Tabby Returned to Owner
PORTLAND, Ore. (Jan. 12) - A 20-pound cat whose girth got him stuck in a pet door while trying to plunder some food was reunited with his owner Thursday.
Obituary: Sci-fi author wrote `The Illuminatus! Trilogy'
By Dennis Hevesi, New York Times
Long Beach Press Telegram
Robert Anton Wilson, an author of "The Illuminatus! Trilogy" - a mind-twisting science-fiction series about a secret global society that has been a cult classic for more than 30 years - died on Thursday at his home in Capitola. He was 74.
…
The author of 35 books on subjects like extrasensory perception, mental telepathy, metaphysics, paranormal experiences, conspiracy theory, sex, drugs and what he called quantum psychology, Wilson wrote the trilogy with his friend Robert J. Shea in the late 1960s, when both were editors at Playboy. The books - "The Eye in the Pyramid," "The Golden Apple" and "Leviathan" - were all published in 1975 by Dell Science Fiction. They never hit the best-seller lists, but have never gone out of print. Shea died in 1994.
…
Wilson contended that people should never rule out any possibility, including that lasagna might fly.
Contest ends in death by water intoxication
SACRAMENTO - A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.
Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.
...
It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.
Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.
"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland.
Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

Sunday morning greetings. This morning's newspaper carried the expected news of the passing of a longtime acquaintance. She fought hard against ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and would have had her 62nd birthday later this month. DR Elmore, did you get my email?
DR Ginny, thanks for sending the obituary. Did you get my reply?
Oh....the Colts won!
I wonder if someone will say "postmodern" again.
It is a running gag with our family. Our minister loves that phrase and can use it six times in a sermon.
DR Edisaurus, oh, yes, she's seen it! Here's the website she maintains, to give you an idea of how fond she is of AR:

The DWP - I tell ya. If you saw what the DWP bills are like here, you would be amazed at the fact that they are saying they have no responsibility. I will be having a conversation with a supervisor about that very thing this week.
The water in the pipes has frozen because of the cold weather we've been having. When it heats up, then we'll have water. What kind of idiots are these?
I took a shower with water running off the shed roof one time when we were out of water. Brrrr...that was cold! I'm glad it didn't stop raining while I had a head full of shampoo!
Was it really cold enough in LA to freeze pipes? We didn't even turn the heater on last night!
They have no ETA, there is nothing they can do, nor is there anything they WILL do - apparently, homeowners are responsible, not the DWP - their responsibility is only at what they call the "mains" and the water at the "mains" is fine - it's the pipes on the homeowners property that are frozen. I mean, COME ON. I aksed her what if it's all day and night. She said nothing they can do. I asked her what if it's a week? Nothing they can do.

Another sad truth: These weather patterns surely seem to suggest that environmental things are going wacko.
You will not believe what I was just told. The DWP says they are at a loss to explain why this would happen - the lady I talked to is forty-two years old and she, like me, has lived here all her life and never heard of such a thing happening in LA. I am not a happy camper at this time. The sky is blue and the sun is out, so maybe that will help.
She'd been to work for fifteen minutes and has already had nine calls and there were seventy calls waiting after me. REVOLT!
Another sad truth: These weather patterns surely seem to suggest that environmental things are going wacko.
You think the record cold is Global Warming?
der Brucer
I, of course, knew naught of this as I have a mattress warmer that allowed me toasty comfort all through the night.
I do have my thermostats set on 70...and the house feels much as it does on winter days when I have it set on 60.

A new study by Dr. David Legates, Delaware's State Climatologist and director of the University of Delaware's Center for Climatic Research, throws cold water on the claim that global warming threatens to cause the extinction of polar bears.
Scare Unwarranted
As part of his study titled Climate Science: Climate Change and its Impacts, expected at press time to be released in April of this year, Legates reviewed assertions by environmental alarmists that global warming is causing an unnatural increase in Arctic temperatures, posing a threat to the thickness and extent of sea ice required by polar bears.
In particular, Legates examined claims made in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (Arctic Assessment), an international project of the Arctic Council--an intergovernmental forum consisting of representatives from eight Arctic nations and six groups representing indigenous peoples.
After careful review, Legates found the Arctic Assessment claims of an impending, human-induced arctic meltdown are "not supported by the evidence."
There's always bottled water for minor crises.
Yes, global warming leads to extreme weather patterns, not just warmer weather
Umm... Well, thanks DR DERBRUCER for my morning dose of news... Nice to know to things are OK with the world. :-\

The glass is half full!

But there are things you can do! When anticipating a freeze, leave one faucet on in a tiny, slow stream - that will keep your pipes from freezing (does jump the water bill a bit :(

Laters...
Good morning!
Partly cloudy skies here, but there is also blue sky to be seen. Supposedly, we're going to get near 70 again today. It didn't get very cold last night either. I never heard the heat kick on, and I got warmer in the bed than usual during January.
And the word of the day is: RIDENT!Kevin the pyromaniac found his mood turned RIDENT every time he found a new source of TINDER.

Using a hair dryer on the pipes after they freeze can help speed the thawing process. A portable heater also works. There are those of us, however, who do not have long enough hair to justify owning a hair dryer. Towel drying works for me.
Today I plan to go to a movie in the cinema. Don't know which one but I am going
I don't want to hear a thing about global warming from any camp that does not support a significant expansion ofnew-clue-yernuclear power plants in the US and expanded off shore oil drilling to reduce US dependence on coal.

There are 4 inches of new snow on my front porch. I was going to post a photo measuring it with my Happy Bear ruler, but I can't find a USB cable to hook the camera to the computer
...
DR Ginny, what was the outcome of the Ohio water pollution?
I absolutely love Truly Madly Deeply.
I have six inches, but I have had it for a long time!
Couldn't have had a more beautiful January day. The majority of the clouds cleared away, leaving just a few to have a blue sky with a few scattered clouds and highs in the 70s. Hard to believe California is not having what we're having.
The boil alert was lifted for our part of town
Don't let your guard down---there could still be errant boils lurking around!

So did anyone else see "You're The One That I Want" tonight? I won't do any spoilers, just curious
Awww... That's right, they held the NYC auditions at The Palace... The Lestat logos were still up at the time.
HUGS....
Aw, thanks, DR vixmom. I'm OK. And since there's a chance I may be back at The Palace this spring... We shall see...
;)
DR vixmom - Would the vixter still be interested in a "xerox library" of classical vocal repertoire?I am very sure that she would.... and what she couldn't use I am sure that her voice instructor would welcome

WFO and his everloving Joe took a 2 week excursion to St Croix . I agreed to look in on things every once in a while....well it tiurns out it was a mighty good thing I did... yesterday morning while BK was having no hot water WFO and Joe had it sprouting from the joins in a basement pipe...
It seemd the leak had sprung not too long before I discovered it and it was still on the smallish side not a roaring stream.....and evern more fortunat;ley it occurred directly above the spot the gents are keeping their newspapers for recylcing, so the papers soaked up a good bit of it and kept the mess to a minimum.
Michael Maloney. *sigh*
Greetings to vixmom - there when she's needed!
I liked that they revealed it to the home audience when someone had real pro credits (like that guy who is in the Hairspray tour)
DR Vixmom saves the day!
Still seeing a bunch of familiar faces, and hearing a lot of familiar voices... In both the "wants" and "don't wants".

Vixmom-Is it Girl Scout cookie time?

Hi Vixmom so glad to see you
DR vixmom - I've returned to NYC after four and a half months in DC, and I've returned here to HHW too.
It's nice to be home.
:)
OOOh we've had between 5 and 6 inches of snow. I like that
what were you working on in DC? Were you away from HHW as well then? I have been dreadfully E & T since last July ....I expect BK will bitchslap me from here to LA next time he sees me.....
When I got to 98th, I ended up running into a friend I haven't seen in ages - a very pleasant surprise. He just happened to be heading out for a bit to stretch his legs too, so we headed over to Riverside Park
It's been ages since I've seen Truly, Madly, Deeply. Is it the same Michael Maloney who stars in Love on a Branch Line? He's not in the imdb. I think this MM may be too young.
No commentary here on GREASE: YOU'RE THE ONE THAT WE WANT? Or are people waiting for it to air on the West Coast so as to avoid spoilers?

I don't know if this is an urban legend or not, but supposedly, on some local news broadcast that took place last year, a weather forcaster predicted a snow storm that was to bring eight to nine inches. The following night, after the storm failed to materialize, the anchorwoman in her on-air segue to the weather man said, "So Bob, where are those nine inches you promised me last night?"
I've been hope this would turn up on Youtube, but so far no luck.
I'm back from a trip to Border's to use my personal shopping day (10% off) and my holiday rewards dollars, both of which were about to expire. I bought 2 travel resources for Washington, DC (Frommer's 2007 and City Walks), a birthday card for our niece/goddaughter (who turns 18 this week), some half-price Christmas gift wrap, and my February book group book, Jane Glover's Mozart's Women.

So happy that you've found contentment in your new job, DR Vixmom. othing is worse that having to work at a place where you're miserable.
Mine expired a couple of days ago...I totally forgot about it. :-\
Personal Shopping Day? or Holiday Rewards Accrual?Hmmm I should go check my Borders account.....
Personal Shopping Days expire at the end of the month, but you can redeem your Holiday Savings reward until January 31.
Is John Bolaris still the weatherman at one of the NYC local channels? Oy--the stories I could tell you about him!
No Sam Champion stories?
;D
I know not of whom you speak. But the strangest pic pops up when you do a Google image search on his name.
Or maybe not so strange...

I wish it would snow here in Philly. Just a little, just to make it look magical.
Personal Shopping Day? or Holiday Rewards Accrual?
Personal Shopping Days expire at the end of the month, but you can redeem your Holiday Savings reward until January 31.I checked my e-mail and it actually was my December Personal Shopping Day that I was thinking about...that's what had expired. I only signed up for this a couple of months ago, so I don't really know too much about it, yet.
Have you registered your card/account at Borders.com? Once you do, you can get a pretty detailed account of your account activity.
*I have to say I was kind of frightened by how much I had spent in December. I mean if my holiday savings accrual was equal to 5% of my spending...
It is, allegedly, Fahrenheit 28 degrees here in Oakland "right now."
