Title: THE WEIRDLY PLACED "R"
Post by: bk on January 31, 2006, 12:11:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had several weirdly placed "R"s, and now it is time for you to post until the weirdly placed cows come home.

And I'm the second post on Tuesday, January 31, 2006. It's not my fault! I was asleep when the notes were posted!!! Do not take draconian measures against me as punishment for lack of posts after the midnight (LA time) hour.

Good morning Larry.

I can't remember the last time I was at a garage sale (therer are not many garages in Manhattan) and the only times I have been to E-Bay is when I have been directed to go there by other people to see items they thought were interesting. I have never registered or purchased or sold anything on E-Bay. I have purchased some CDs over the years at thrift shops but I think that's about it for interesting purchases at swap meets or garage sales.

Good morning, all!  And a special good morning to DR Ben.  Once I saw that MEDIUM was a repeat, I went to bed, slept very well, and had peculiar dreams about college theatre, and songs I'd written 36 years.

DR Ginny, I did not post anything about STREET SCENE; I was still thinking about it.  It was a mixed bag of singers with no conception of acting, singers who weren't bad actors, and singers who should change majors.  The opera's a strange piece, and I thought a lot of the first act was only so-so till the last 30 minutes, when things picked up with "Wouldn't You Like to be on Broadway?," "Moon-face Starry-eyed," and the glorious duet that closes the act.  Act Two played much more solidly.

The singer playing Anna Maurant was around 22 and never seemed to identify with the 40 year-old, abused, unhappy adulterous housewife she was playing.  The performance was too frivolous, but the young soprano playing her daughter Rose and the tenor playing Sam were quite good.  There was a too much "busy" direction during the first half of act one which took me out of ther neo-realism of the piece, and all the actors kept forgetting it was a very very very hot day as both the opening and closing numbers are "Ain't it awful, the heat?"

Once it settled down, the piece went quite well, and the orchestra sounded fantastic.  I sound more negative here than I actually am.  I had a wonderful time.

Back to Toyland and the NYPL today, and I haver toi finish my pre-accountant IRS work this afternoon and evening.

TOD:  a 1904 Majestic Theatre program for BABES IN TOYLAND.  They're quite rare, and I found it on eBay.

TOD:

I think I've droned on enough about my Tony Award purchased on eBay.  So here's a story about the other Tony Awards I've spotted on sale there.

In one auction which I stupidly did not bid on, Shirley Booth's award for COME BACK, LITTLE SHEBA was up for sale with a starting bid of about $1500.  Unbelievably, no one bid on it and it went unsold!  After the end of the auction, there were stories of its non-sale on Playbill-Online and Broadway.com.  The award went back on sale and this time fetched close to $4000.

Another Tony Award auction consisted of a blank, uninscribed medallion.  It was being sold by a woman who, IIRC, was the daughter of the award designer.  Since it was never awarded to anyone, it didn't interest me.  I don't recall the amount it sold at.

The third Tony I saw for sale on eBay was the strangest.  It was originally the award for Best Musical that was given to HELLO, DOLLY.  Evidently, David Merrick had the inscription side of the medallion ground flat and reinscribed with "Author of the year" to Ginger Roger's husband (I forget his name) for some mystery novel he penned.  It's astounding to think that Merrick thought so little about a major award presented to one of his top productions.  But with Merrick, I guess it's not too surprising, either.

One time I also saw a mock up of a Tony that was created as a prop used in an Australian TV movie.  The medallion looked to be the size of tea saucer and the base looked like it would be at home on the set of Dr Who.  I passed on this one.

Even though Miss Channing doesn't count birthdays (she's a Christian Scientist and they don't acknowledge those yearly natal days), yes, she was born on this very day in 1921 (which would make her 85).

Some other birthdays from:

Playbill On-Line (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/67513.html)

Also born in 1903 on this date was the late Tallulah Bankhead. Others include Jerry J. Cohan 1848, Fritz Leiber 1882, Eddie Cantor 1892, Mario Lanza 1921, Richard Clarke 1933, Suzanne Pleshette 1937, Paul Jabara 1948, Anthony LaPaglia 1959 and Danielle Ferland 1971

I don't have FJL's great list from his friend, is it Milla, or something similar?

I bought this muppet at a garage sale.  It had no manufacturer tags on it, and the seller claimed it had been given to her son by a friend who worked at the Muppet studios in England and that it had been used for the making of  Muppet Christmnas Carol.... I have no idea if the story is true or not but for $5 who cares?

I also bought Vixdad a heavy silver pocket watch.   I got that for $5 as well as it wasn't working.  It cost another $60 to get it cleaned and running.  The watchmaker told me it dated to the 1880's.

DR Cillaliz: Congrats on the new home! Too bad they didn't leave it clean. Maybe they are going over before the official closing and finishing up. I hope so.

When I sold my mom's house last year, I left a new litter box and bag of litter in case their kitty needed it right away, a phone list with the plumber, a/c, pizza places, etc., the names of the next-door neighbors, and a history of the house including the story of the hole in the bedroom door, and a working lawn mower.

I wanted them to remember their first home-buying experience as a pleasant one.

My own personal OSCAR surprises, I was surprised WALK THE LINE didn't sneak in as Best Picture ahead of MUNICH. RAY managed to sneak in last year as the fifth nominee, and I figured WALK THE LINE with a similar vibe and about the same amount of success at the box-office would also land in the top five.

I had read there was a big push to try to get Naomi Watts a nomination for KING KONG. I didn't see the movie, so I don't know if this was a misplaced effort on someone's part, but I thought it there was an upset, this might be it.

Only three Best Song nominees! True, the songs in the last couple of decades have been mostly awful, but I still thought they'd fill out the category as in years past.

I knew the song from BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN which won the Golden Globe for Best Song wasn't eligible. I believe it was because it was played in the background over the radio during the film and wasn't spotlit anywhere else in the picture which goes against the Academy's rules.

Vixmom, when one moves out of a house, is it customary to take all the light bulbs?

No, but we have had instances of that.   We've had people remove ceiling fans and chandeliers, leaving big holes in the ceilings with wires hanging out.

We had one client call after the closing because the sellers had (after the "final walk-through" which generally takes place a few hours or the evening before the closing here in NY), removed all the door handles as well as all the light switch and electrical socket cover plates!!

Then you have the sellers that leave EVERYTHING they decided they didn't want, broken furniture, trampolines, gym sets,  old broken air conditioners, cans of food, a huge barrel of homemade wine,  goldfish (in their bowl), and of course piles of garbage.

Last year one of our clients called hysterically crying that the sellers had left behind 156 of those huge outdoor lawn trash bags full of rubbish on the driveway.  The driveway was unusable and the local trash authorities refused to take more than 6 bags at a time!

and people think that real estate law is boring

To me, the most STARTLING omission from the nominations is the total ABSENCE of any nominations for George Lucas' "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" -- one of the most critically acclaimed, and highest grossing, films of 2005.

It's the first "Star Wars" film, that I recall, NOT nominated for at least technical recognition (i.e. visual effects, sound effects editing, etc.)

I realize, of course, that most of the guys who worked on "Revenge of the Sith" also worked on "War of the Worlds" and, thus, got nominations.

Still......

The omission of Russell Crowe for "Cinderella Man" is most egregious, indeed.

He is the ONLY reason that film works as beautifully as it does.  The man can do no wrong as an actor, IMO.

His role lasts about 10 minutes in the film. Both he and Ed Harris had been given outside chances of scoring nominations. As had Terrance Howard for CRASH.

Hurt won Best Supporting Actor from the LA Film Critics and the NY Film Critics.

Since Ben mentioned Milla's birthday listings, here it is in honor of Michael Shayne's birthday.

Interesting that with all the super-luminaries born on Jan. 31, the longest entry in terms of space on Milla's list for the day is the listing for Paul Jabara.  (Some do consider his Oscar for "Last Dance" - while one could say deserved for the song itself - to have been awarded for a film which is arguably the worst film ever to actually get an Oscar.)

DR MBARNUM - the Bollywood movie I watched last night was DIL DEKE DEKKO which translates to something like "Give your heart and see what happens."

I thought from the description on the DVD it was going to be a drama!  But it was a comedy about switched identities and "teens" singing and dancing and some very nice numbers!  I liked it, except that it was in b/w!  I love my Bollywood Eastman Color!!

But it was a lot of fun!

Oh, yes, it had some good musical numbers...the movie itself was sort of OK...but I do like Asha Parekh...and it is one of those films that SHOULD have been in color, I think.

Ken Clark looked big on the big screen.

I, of course, don't really care about these nominations at all, but was also surprised to see Sith completely overlooked in the technical categories - it's actually sort of a joke.

On the other hand, I'm very happy to see Amy Adams up.  For the sharp-eyed, you may remember that Miss Adams' did the costumes for a little show we like to call What If.  I think I'll watch Junebug tonight.

Furnace is ordered..it should be installed after the gas line is connected to my house...any day now.

Heat will be supplied...very soon...I certainly hope!

Money will dramatically be removed from my bank account and charges will be piled up on my credit cards, the likes of which I have never seen before...but I will have heat again.

Whew.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR MICHAEL SHAYNE!

I have a computer question for any computer-savvy DR out there...

Last night I decided to go ahead with the updates that were available for my Windows XP, so I started the installation before bed and restarted my computer when I woke up this morning. I entered my password and got to the desktop. My wallpaper popped up, but none of the destop icons came up (My Computer, AOL, Recycle Bin, etc.) and the task bar at the bottom of the screen was missing, too. I shut down and restarted a second and third time and got the same thing - just my wallpaper and a little arrow with the hourglass popping up next to it every now and again. I had to leave for work, so I couldn't mess with it, but I want to figure out what's going on.

Any ideas/suggestions?

My most interesting eBay find:

Not the most-loved, or most-treasured, but certainly the most unusual and very gratifying object I won is a 1955 Academy Award citation presented to Twentieth Century-Fox and Bausch & Lomb for the CinemaScope 55 lens process.

I found it in a random search...and it was an odd search, since I was looking up a name I had no expectations in finding -- Edward B. Powell (longtime orchestrator for Alfred Newman).  It's not like Powell ever wrote a book or something...but I thought maybe the odd thing might turn up...a letter or note from him or to him...because I'd found other esoterica like that.  You just never know!

As it so happens, Powell was one of the officers of the Academy at the time and he signed the citation, along with Academy president George Seaton (who hired Newman several times to score his films, the last being "Airport").

The downside of this find is that the citation was mounted on a piece of wood (suitable for being placed on a wall) and had been shellacked or sealed with something that truly devalues the piece for its original signatures.

Still...it's "someone's" Academy Award citation and I have it.

Another find that has only "personal" value to me -- an original oil painting by Ernest Gold...a waterfall...VERY impressionistic...quite NOT very good at all, actually.  But it was by him, and he was one of my favorite composers.

Justin Timberlake is a guest star on the kind-of-scary (at least for us over-the-hillers) new Sergio Mendes CD, Timeless, which I just got in an advance release version from Japan.  It is produced by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and consists mostly of rap versions of a lot of Sergio's early Brasil '66 material.  Oy and double oy.

Happy Birthday, one and all and also all and one.

Seven or eight years ago, I stumbled across an eBay listing for a bunch of old film programs (souvenir booklets sold in theaters when the films played in first-run).

I've been collecting movie programs for four decades-plus, and I had all the programs in that bunch save one -- a program for "All About Eve."

The price was low for the bunch. I made a nice-sized offer, and then promptly forgot about watching the item until the auction ended (this was before I knew about such things as esnipe).  I lost the auction by $1.

No program for "All About Eve" had been offered, that I had found, since that one (and it was a minor miracle I even learned about it being part of that bunch because it was only listed as one among several in the desciption, not in the subject line)...until several weeks ago.  I found one being offered by a seller in Texas who had just acquired someone's estate...and I placed a HUGE esnipe bid.

I got it for a song, of course, with only one other bidder.  But I have it now...it's mine, Mine, MINE.  It had been elusive, and I thought I might never find another....but the joy of eBay is that it's prudent to NEVER say NEVER.  Except when declaring that you just NEVER KNOW!

:D

I've gotten many, many cool things, but none at garage sales.  I know people find stuff all the time, but I have never found one interesting thing at a garage sale.  eBay is a whole different story, and I've found some amazing outre things there, like my Godzilla bubble machine, and a weird magazine called Echo, that you both read and play (five of its pages are 45rpm-sized records).  It has an interview with Gypsy Rose Lee talking about the musical Gypsy, and then a record of Jule Styne playing songs from the show at his house (including, I think, some rare stuff).  It has a story about Nichols and May, and then a record of them talking at breakfast.  James Thurber contributes a piece about harmoica player Larry Adler and then there's a record him Adler playing.  On on it goes.  I think it died after this one issue.

Of course, I've found some great Li'l Abner stuff, including the one of the best original panels of Capp art I've ever seen.

LONDON - It was every art lover's nightmare — a stumble, a crash and thousands of dollars worth of historic fragments lying on the floor.

The incident happened last week at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England, which for decades has displayed a group of Qing dynasty Chinese vases on a window sill. [/i]

A hapless visitor tripped on a loose shoelace, tumbled down a flight of stairs and crashed into the vases, smashing them into smithereens.

The man, who has not been named, left the museum shaken but undamaged -- in sharp contrast to the vases.

"It was a most unfortunate and regrettable accident but we are glad that the visitor involved was able to leave the museum unharmed," museum director Duncan Robinson said on Monday.

"Whilst the method of displaying objects is always under review, it is important not to over-react and make the museum's collections less accessible to the visiting public," he added in a statement.

The priceless vases, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, were donated to the museum in 1948 and have become one of its most recognizable exhibits.

Shocked but determined museum staff members have vowed to glue the shards back together again.

That museum story reminds me of the opening shots of Mel Brooks as Moses coming down from the mountain in "The History of the World, Part I"....he's carrying THREE tablets...and starts to say something about God having delivered unto the Israelites 15....then drops a tablet...says "Oy!"....and then, "10....10 Commandments."

DR Jason,  I've heard of that happening before but I'm not sure of the solution.  For a temporary fix, you can try doing a System Restore.  Restore your pc to a day before you performed the update and see if that brings back your desktop.

Other Oscar surprises:

Matt Dillon for Best Supporting Actor -- amazing that they've FINALLY given him some recognition after years of sterling work with nothing.

Paul Giammatti...deserved a nom for "Sideways", but I wasn't all that impressed with his role in "Cinderella Man."  He was good...it was good part...but not any better than many parts that went unmentioned/unnominated.  The actor who played the evil senator in "Revenge of the Sith" was far more worthy, IMO.

Still......

I totally missed the nom for "Makeup"...what on earth is wrong with me???

But...MAKEUP?  THAT is all they found worthy of nominating?

It also has every cast members' names printed on the outside edges. Very cool. I got it for $10. Even cooler. What's cooler still is that the guy at Triton Gallery - THE theatre poster experts in the City - told me he hadn't seen one in at least 10 years and even back then it was worth well over $200 unframed. Ooh!  Ooh!

Other eBay finds:

Back in the early 1970s, MGM had an anniversary and a numer of things were issued, including some numbered, limited edition, framed mirrors with the MGM lion logo on the mirror.  They were expensive at the time...beyond my meager means as an E-nothing in the Navy...and later, I found one in a store that wanted $1,000  for it.  Ouch.

Believe it or not, but I found one on eBay that was not readily identified for what it was...and I got if for under $150, including shipping.  Later, I found another on eBay going for over $600 as a starting price.

It's probably worth between what I paid and that other price...I have no way of knowing.

I've since found another mirror -- this one is blue-tinted and has the 20th Century-Fox logo on it.  It's a nice size and I've never seen another like it.  Don't know when it was issued or what it cost new.

I've won a few interesting things on eBay, a few "unpublished" vocal scores which at the time were hot tickets, now everyone who is into "unpublished" vocal scores has acquired them, so it doesn't seem so special anymore. I go to eBay when I can't find things on Amazon or Footlight.  As a matter of fact, today, I've been looking for "Hooked on Classics" CD's, as they are WAY out of print and for some idiotic reason, I'm hooked on them again!  Reminds me of my childhood, plus they are good for excercising to.

Speaking of "Hooked on Classics" I know a long time ago, they actually published sheet music for some of the medleys and I believe it has been long out of print.  That would definately be a garage sale find!

As is so often the case with the Oscars, I have a feeling this was a compensation/consolation nomination for failing to nominate him the year before. And he'll probably win it, too. He was simply sensational in SIDEWAYS.

Yes, I think Joshua Logan was a dull, unimaginative film director, but I thinik SOUTH PACIFIC would have been immensely more interesting if Doris Day had been given the role of Nellie Forbush (and if those god awful filters had never been used).

...When we updated to  Windows XP, we lost all our favorite places, email, pictures, everything.

I suspect they were not really lost (just misplaced :( - favorite places, Email, pictures, etc. are stored in their own files on your computers hard drive. Installing a new operating system generally does not destroy them - but you often lose the links to the files. For exam[;e, if you are an AOL user, after you install Windows XP you need to reinstall AOL. You then need to know how to find and move your old AOL files that have your Email, Address Book, Favorite, places, etc from the ols AOL location to the new one.

This things are done deliberatly to make the average user look like an idiot while elevating Techo-nerds to near Godhood status.

Amen!

However - on the A/E Biography of Mitzi Gaynor (they have reached the bottom of the barrel, apparently) they showed some clips of her screen test - and she was MUCH BETTER there than she was in the film.  And Richard Rodgers who approved and championed her certainly knew how to spot talent.  Gaynor said that her ENTIRE performance was re-recorded and that Joshua Logan stood in the booth with her and would not let her give ANY line readings except ones that he gave her.  So I guess what we are seeing and hearing is Joshua Logan as Nellie Forbush.

However, no explanation was given by Mitzi for her same wooden and BAD performances in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS and ANYTHING GOES.  ::)

I need I need to get ready to head in to the theatre.  Today is the last day for our Company Manager, Jill.  She's been with Arena for about four or five years at this point, and she will be sorely missed.  -She's moving on to the O'Neill Theatre Center.  In any case, there's a "Beer and Brats" party - she's originally from Wisconsin - starting at 5:00, and I at least want to make it there in time for a Goodbye Hug.  So...

Further proof of his brutalization of film muscials can be found in "Paint Your Wagon" (with Eastwood sounding like an Idol reject) and "Camelot" (with Vanessa Redgrave sporting the filthiest finger nails in the kingdom) - If I didn't know better, I'd put the blame for "Mame" on his shoulders.

bk, in his notes, stated:

Quote
Just what IS that weirdly placed “r” doing in February? It just sits there like so much fish, doesn’t it? I mean, you don’t pronounce it, you don’t acknowledge it,

Well, kind sir, maybe you Valley Kids don't pronounce the "R', but some of us linguistic elites do!

Webster (Noah not Daniel) states:

Quote
Dissimilation may occur when a word contains two identical or closely related sounds, resulting in the change or loss of one of them. This happens regularly in February, which is more often pronounced \'fe-b(y)&-"wer-e\ than \'fe-br&-"wer-e\, though all of these variants are in frequent use and widely accepted. The \y\ heard from many speakers is not an intrusion but rather a common pronunciation of the vowel u after a consonant, as in January and annual.

So there!!!!!

Right now, I'm listening to the original Broadway cast recording of The Color Purple (http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4076343) that I got from J&R for only $5.99!  Now, it costs $14.99!  I've just finished the first act and so far, it's really good.  The musical styles are quite varied and it all seems to work.  I downloaded the complete lyrics from angelrecords.com (http://www.angelrecords.com/news.asp#136) and printed them (back to back).  It's a 20-page full-page format, not in a CD booklet format, so it doesn't fit with the CD, but it's nice to have it. :)

I am always sniffing around for good deals, interesting finds and curiousities.....

One of the more interesting things I got off of ebay was a script from 1985 for Another World.... not autographed and had notes of actions and stuff that had to be done. I also have an autographed days one from 2001.   I have a number of publicity photos from a number of soaps that are no longer on the air. Primarily they are from Another World and Search for Tomorrow....

One of the more disturbing things I have seen on ebay is grave markers of war veterans.... One of the funniest things was a guy in his ex-wife's wedding dress and he was modeling it... That was a hoot.

I got the Ciernini Claddag release of The Chieftains first album in 1963 and it is in very good condition. I also have several rare cds of the  work they have done that are hard to find including The Grey Fox and Barry Lyndon.... I am still looking for two Matt Molloy CDs, One Derek Bell album and one Sean Keane album and a Kevin Conneff....  I have many of the works that this group has done together and individually...

At a flea market I found a shirt that was used by an extra in the movie The Outsiders....

Rummage / Yard Sales and Flea Markets

I found an original 1962 Breyer gloss horse model in near mint condition still in the box at a rummage sale...

Dakota Territory Commemorative coin in a box of craft stuff I got...

From the potato field:
Native American hammerhead.... Possibly DAkota or Anishnabe (Chippewa). I use it as a door stop....  I also have innumerable arrowheads. My father was not a happy camper about the hammerhead for it broke the harvester!

Several books from my grandparents and great grandparents... I cherish on that my great grandfather got as a gift and it is collection of Campfire stories and anecdotes and it is written by a member of the GAR.... Fascinating stories and songs....

I also have a geography book from 1865.....

My son-in-law takes my 8 year old grandson hunting regularly; there is even a gun that was purchased for his use.

Re: South Pacific

The following info comes from various posts on the Home Theater Forum

South Pacific" was cut shortly after it opened in New York at the Criterion Theater. The song "I'm gonna wash that man outta my hair" was all but removed as was the Boar's tooth dance. The scenes with Emille and Nellie ("Some Enchanted Evening" were shortened)

The British cut of the film opened with "Some Enchanted Evening" later going into "Nothing Like a Dame" as it did on the Broadway stage.

from authority Joe Capps

In the foreigh prints, Buzz also says"Thats We're you're friend Emile De Beque lives" and we cut right to the first conversation of Nellie And Emile.
Remember all these running times include the Overture, Intermission Music and Exit Music - the current short version we have is 161 min- So we are only missing about ten minutes of film.
Also cut is the following
After the song Bali Hai - ther is a shot comic reprise of the song sung by Luther Billis(Ray Walston)
Toward the end of Act One,, in the short version, Emile says Nellie"Wait here. I have a surprise for you" He then brings out his two illegitimate children - Some surprise.
Make Emile look like an idiot.
In the long version, the suprise is emile putting Nellies cloak over his head and he imitate her singing "Gonna Wash That Man right ought my Hair. "
A strange cut is earlier in the film. Cable can't convince Emile to go on the mission. Cable asks his commander what he should do and the commander tells him to take some time off and get a boat. Cable says "a boat" and the music starts and we see cable heading for Bali Hai while the chorus sings a reprise of the song.
In the original version, Cable SINGS the reprise and the chorus answers him from the shore. You canhear this for yourself on a DVD. Image has a docujentary called Rodgers and Hammerstein - the Sound of Movies. This was reissued last year with some extras it did not originally have. ONe of the extras is the original trailer for south Pacific. In that trailer you can hear ( but not see) Bill Lee (who dub for John Kerr) singing the Bali Hai Reprise.
Also changed is the scene on the island where Cable meets Liat. The scene was originally longer of his being led through the jungle by Bloody Mary. It was originally twice as long.
Never put in the film was the uncut Wash That Man - I wouldlove to see it. Also shot but not used was the song Loneliness of evening sung by Emile.

and more

The regular general release 35mm Panavision prints (released by Twentieth Century Fox) were in color by DeLuxe Labs. The 70mm Todd-AO prints (released by Magna Corp.) were Technicolor. If you compare the opening titles of both versions you will see this very clearly. It's possible that the original 65mm negative was photographed in Eastman Color, but the 35mm prints were processed by DeLuxe and the 70mm ones by Technicolor

On Golden Pond
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Reds (Warren Beatty won for best director)

Um, Mr. Shayne, Joecaps is one of the biggest nincompoops on the planet - he lives in his own private world and makes up many of the facts he spouts as truth.  To point out the most obvious - no 70mm print in history was ever printed in IB Tech - they didn't do 70mm prints, which is why there are no surviving 70mm prints with anything but faded color.  When South Pacific was playing, there was no Panavision - the prints were Cinemascope.

I haven't opened it yet, so I actually might take it back and buy it from the cheaper store...not because I'm that cheap, but because the store that had it for less is a locally owned and operated and completely independent music store.  They've been in town for as long as I can remember.  Their prices are usually comparable, but this time, they're cheaper.

Watched another CSI: NY episode on DVD. Season 3 was a good one for the series, and the writers very smartly mixed up dynamics within the team so that there was competition and some strained feelings. Everything isn't always sweetness and light yet they still have jobs to do and have to do it working together even when there are bruised feelings involved.

I always think I'm being so clear:  Yes, South Pacific was shot in ToddAO, a 65mm film process.  Then, after its roadshow it was printed down to 35mm for regular engagements - those prints were Cinemascope, not Panavision (according to the "expert" Joecaps) - Panavision was not in use at the time of South Pacific.

Just finished watching Junebug, one of those indy pictures that everyone falls all over themselves to praise, critics and a certain segment of the audience alike.

Went to see "Keeping Mum" at the movies today. I assume that will be a different spelling and or title for the USA release!
Gentle humour reminiscent of the old comedies from Ealing days.

Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas & Rowan Atkinson.

I don't know if I can continue watching Chan is Missing right now, because they keep doing scenes of people eating Chinese food and it's making me VERY hungry.

I would love to get to 300 tonight....

WE had a lovely shower of sleet, snow, rain, and ice. Driving home tonight was rather slippery and entertaining....

DR Tomovoz, I have not heard of it until you mentioned it. I looked it up on IMDB and lists Keeping Mum for its US title also...  Will have to look it up..

I debating which one of three movies I want to see this weekend: Brokeback Mountain, Chronicles of Narnia or The New World....

I hear all three are very good... I am leaning towards the New World or Brokeback Mountain.  New World would win me points with the Professor for my class on native Americans.  However Brokeback Mountain would be good. I like Larry McMurtry's work. Loved Lonsome Dove.

I watched DAYS OF OUR LIVES for a time in 1984, back when Leann Hunley was on the show...I love Leann Hunley! I also watched it during the time a few years back when Matt Battaglia was on the show.

I was a loyal viewer of Days from 1981 to 1992 during its glory days... Leanne Hunley is a beautiful actress. I am also a huge Stephen Nichols, Mary Beth EVans, Matt Ashford and Missy Reeves Fan.  I also enjoy Charles Shaughnessy and Patsy Pease.....

That was when the writing was good with well defined characters and stories...

I don't remember Matt Battaglia... I quit watching days for a long time after JER and Langan got rid of Matt.....

I went to the ABC soaps then and got back into OLTL and GH...

There is also a DVD of (almost) the original production.  It was filmed in L.A. with Angela Lansbury (who originated the role of Mrs. Lovitt) and George Hearn playing Sweeney Todd.  And there's the concert version with Patti LuPone (also on the brand new CD) and George Hearn.
