For the most part i agreed with the judges.

For the first 3/4 of the show out of everybody they showed sing, i agreed with all the decisions.

There were however a few people who they put through who i have never seen (which i find quite unfair).

But the last 2 boy decisions made me furious.

Josiah (the blonde boy who lived in his car) should have gotten through IMO. They spent so much time on his backstory. And i really feel like the audience would have responded to him.

I actually totally thought he was going through.

Another i was furious about was kyle (in the last group).

I actually was not sure if they would put him through. But i 100% agree with everything simon said at the end. He was different. H e had a fabulous personality. I loved him in his original audition. And i loved his josh groban. And i don't understand how they can put through people who seem just like everybody else, over this guy.

I really believe the public would have responded to him.

And after watching those 2 eliminations i don't even feel like watching IDOL. They've already annoyed me.

DearReader Laura, today I toddled around Hollywood and West Hollywood.

First I ate at LUCKY DEVILS, which is the restaurant run by actor Lucky Vanous (best known for his Diet Coke commerial from back in the 90s and his short lived TV shows PACIFIC PALISADES and 18 WHEELS OF JUSTICE. I was pleased with the service, the wait staff were very attentive and very friendly. No attitude. No ignoring you.

The food was ok. I had a Tuna Melt, so nothing fancy.

After lunch (Lucky was not there today, by the way...he was sick)...I walked across Hollywood Blvd to Larry Edmund's Bookstore and purchased a few movie stills...they didn't have much that I wanted, unfortunately.

Then I walked about the boulevard for awhile and realized it was getting very chilly (I was dressed for the summer like weather of the last few days...but today was not as nice)

I drove back to Amoeba Records and traded in some DVDs and CDs that I had hauled down with me...got $50 in trade and did some more shopping. I really found a lot of wonderful CDs on my two different trips to that store...right now I am listening to THE BEST OF TONY HATCH AND HIS ORCHESTRA....I had never heard of him befofre, but I guess he was quite popular in the 60s and 70s...his music is great...sort of lounge music like.

Pretty much I scoured the clearence rows and just picked up a lot of stuff that sounded interesting...got some Arabic pop music, Bollywood soundtracks, several Anita Kerr Singers and The san Sebastian Strings CDs, romance songs of the 30s...just all sorts of things...and two region 2 DVDs of the AIP films THE BRAIN EATERS and RUNAWAY GIRLS.

Then I drove over to La Cienaga and Santa Monica where I stopped in at The Hollywood Poster Exchange. Janet Chapman, the owner, had been searching her inventory for specific stills that I was looking for and she found some great stuff...the best were some "candid" shots of my interviewee Bek Nelson with both Roger Smith and Gary Merrill on the set of CRASH LANDING as well as some scene shots of Bek and my other interviewee from that film Jewell Lain. Just finding those stills was worth the trip!

Janet is a real sweet lady and is the niece of movie music composer Albert Glasser who composed the music to ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE as well as many other drive-in classics.

LIL ABNER last night was great fun..and of coure you could not have a more enjoyable date then Ms. Laurie Mitchell star of CALYPSO JOE and MISSLE TO THE MOON! She is absolutely one of my favorite people of all time and we just had a blast last night.

I drove (on the scary freeways) from Glendale to Northridge and visited with Laurie for a time at her home environment and played with there new bassett hound. He is only 6 months old and FULL of enery. He drives Laurie up a wall, but her husband Ron just babies him like anything! LoL!

Laurie and I ate at a really nice restauran in Sherman Oaks, which I think was called La Frita or something like that. I had salmon and Laurie had some type of steak. We split a delicious Caesar salad.

We then drove on down to Westwood where the theatre was. It was quite a walk from the parking structure to the theater and 85 percent of the audience was well over 70! A very elderly crowd...and the place was packed to the brim. The play was lots of fun. Most of the cast did a great job with their roles...Jamie Luner without trying to be.

Cathy Rigby was Mammy Yocum was stupendous and did some wonderful acrobatics during one of the dance scenes! Robert Towers was Pappy Yocum and I don't think it could have been cast any better then him. Just great.

Eric Martsolf played Abner. I was not expecting much from him other then to look the part...after all he is from that horrid soap opera PASSIONS! But I tell you he was fantastic. He really was Abner and oh, gosh that guy has a wonderful, wonderful singing voice. And wow, he must be like 6 ft 4, at the least....and those arms. Laurie and I were both enjoying looking at him as well as listening to him.

My absolute favorite in the cast was Larry Cedar, who played Dr. Finsdale...he was so funny, and just so good in a role I had almost even forgetton was in the show.

The only low points I would give the show were Fred Willared as General Bullmoose. Normally he is an actor I really like, but he had absolutely no personality here...maybe he was under the weather or something, I don't know...he fumbled a few lines, I could tell, and he just didn't seem to be into it at all.

The other bad casting seemed to be Brandi Burkhardt (also from PASSIONS). At intermission both Laurie and I both commented that she was very dull as Daisy Mae and she did not project. However, I will say she improved 100 % in the second half. Perhaps someone had a talking to!! LOL! The second half of the show she was just fine...although her singing was really to my liking. Too Disney princess like.

The choreography seemed OK, and of course the songs are all fantastic.

All in all it was a wonderul evening and I am so glad Laurie went with me! We can't wait to do it again sometime!

One touching thing during the evening last night was Laurie's talking about some of the plays she did...she just lit up remembering a tour of one play in San Francisco...it only lasted 3 weeks there but she had so much fun. I think Gene Reynolds was in the play, as was my interviewee Jewell Lain.

You know, she just loved being an actress!! She had so much fun!

I have to say that one thing that I have really missed this trip is DR Musicguy's Hollywood tours...he always showed me the neatest places and told the best stories of his time living here.

Well... I received a call earlier this afternoon asking if I was available to play some auditions tomorrow and Friday for a new show - they needed to "replace" the current pianist...

And since I am available... Well, I should get ready for bed. My sleep schedule is still sort of a bit mixed up from Memphis, but I've also been letting myself sleep in until 11:00 the past two days, and since I have to be down at the studio to meet with the conductor at 9:30...

I wonder if the Hatch recording is with his scaled down orchestra and arrangements. His oriiginal recordings are difficutl to find - "The Theme from The Champions" seems to available in a "thin" version.

There are a few fans of Mr Hatch at HHW.

On the new TORCH SONG DVD, we get to hear Joan Crawford's prerecordings. At one point, she screams about how lousy she's doing. Truly priceless.

I spent the first part of the evening rewatching about 75% of PRIDE & PREJUDICE (the recent film version) upconverted. Lovely as always.

I watched AMERICAN IDOL, too, but I can't believe I really spent an hour watching them torture the poor people who had already gone through hell on earth during those tense audition days. I really DESPISE that aspect of the show.

Yes, it's true, there are STILL people I have not heard one note out of their throats, but I guess on Tuesday we'll finally get to hear every guy and on Wednesday every girl.

I, too, was very disapppointed with the final two-guy selection; judging clearly on the basis of the clips played tonight, they chose the wrong one voice AND personality wise.

With the last two girls, they DID choose correctly. That model had a whiny, off pitch voice that reminded me of a couple of losers from a couple of seasons ago (Camille Vasquez, anyone?). The black girl had an exciting voice.

A couple of the young guys who were so upset about getting cut have time to come back and try again. Their world is not over because they didn't make IDOL at age 16.

Then, I put in TORCH SONG (My Joan Crawford box set came today) to see how it looked in widescreen. Color varied from scene to scene - some good, some kind of pale. The compositions looked fine in widescreen, so no problem there. Mono sound.

I watched about 30 minutes of TORCH SONG, and then I switched to the "making of" documentary on the film. Richard Barrios, Molly Haskell, Christina Crawford, and others commenting on Joan at the time and the film. Made for less than $1 million, and it still lost money! And that's after Joan had a smash hit the year before with SUDDEN FEAR.
