South Korea picks gay-themed film for Oscars

SEOUL (AP) — South Korea selected a gay-themed movie that became an unexpected domestic box office hit to put forward as its candidate for the best foreign film category at the U.S. Academy Awards, the country’s state-run film agency said Sept. 24. “King & the Clown,” a tale about an effeminate male clown caught between the affections of a despotic king and the love of a fellow performer, is the No. 2 film in all-time ticket sales in South Korea. The Korean Film Council said it decided to pick “King & the Clown” because it was believed to have a better chance of winning an Oscar nomination.
Nominated films are scheduled to be announced in January, the council said. A Korean film has never been nominated for an Academy Award.

I thought most everyone was quite good. Everyone but sara and jerry springer were actually quite fantastic.
My favorite again was mario. But i thought emmitt was the best he's ever been. And joey and willa were also quite good. As was vivica and monique.
I would hope that sara or jerry will leave (since they are the weakest). But i can't believe how well everyone is doing.

As I mentioned in a post yesterday, I had read late this summer that this was going to happen; I just didn't believe it. I'd love it if this was a staged hoax that will surprise us later in the season, but I'm afraid what we saw was "real."

Hello from Ottawa, where it's raining at the moment. I'm thrilled that I remembered to bring an umbrella. The B&B where I'm staying is wonderful. I have a suite that covers almost an entire floor of a Victorian house - charming, but still equipped with wireless Internet. Just finished a made-to-order breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and homemade strawberry jam - with the best coffee I've had in ages - and soon will take a walk to look around the Parliament buildings, book shops, galleries, etc. (all nearby). I'm paying $85/night (Can.) for all this!
This evening I go to the National Arts Center for the opening of the Hungarian photo exhibit - President of Hungary in attendance - then to a concert at the NAC.
Tomorrow will be interviewed for some Hungarian TV show (the interview will take place at the Best Western Hotel - the glamor never stops!) - then back to LA.

Of course, the big news for me is the season premiere of LOST tonight, but I am also looking forward to the premiere of THE NINE.
It's a creation of the man responsible for WITHOUT A TRACE, so instantly it has my attention. The cast looks wonderful, too.
Odd, though: the USA TODAY TV critic gave it four stars out of four. The TV critic for my local paper gave it a heavy thumbs down. Looks like I'll really be making my own mind up about this one.

There is a new BONES on tonight, but the HOUSE episode that Fox is playing at 9 is a rerun from last season.

"Friday Night Lights" -- Possible SPOILERS:
Much of the show left me wondering what all the critical fuss was about.
Kyle Chandler can do no wrong, in my book...but Texas football and the depiction of what a coach has to endure with all the "wheels' in a community telling the coach what "we" expect and what "we" want and what "we" won't allow is pretty much BORING to me.
It's realistic, of course, but I don't have to like it.

That said, the show didn't really crystallize for me until the final 10 minutes when everything we had been subjected to was put to an enormous test....I found those final minutes exhilarating.
I know I was manipulated....but I don't care. I like an emotional catharsis and the show delivered one.

I'm up, I'm up. My publisher is trying to figure out why amazon has added a "sourcing fee" to the latest book - it makes the hardcover cost $44.10! Neither of us have ever seen such a thing and it certainly wasn't there when the book first went up. I'd called amazon yesterday, and they told me it could have only come from the publisher. The publisher tells me they've never heard of such a thing and that it absolutely didn't come from them. The fun never stops at amazon - the publisher is supposedly calling them to discuss.

I, too, love Kyle Chandler. He was terrific in the GREY'S ANATOMY episodes that he guest-starred on last season (and earned an Emmy nomination).
Since the central theme of the show FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is high school football, I just won't be tuning in. I made the senior high band when I was in the eighth grade, so that meant five years of attending every football game, regular season and playoffs plus the Shrine Bowl when we had players participating (which was four out of the five years). Never much a fan of football anyway, this barrage of football games during those years gave me a real dislike of the game. So, I can't watch a show where that's the pitch of the series.
But I'll follow its progress with interest. Lots of critics are really high on the show, so I'll be keen to see if it catches on.

I see that the Motion Picture Masterpiece Collection comes out from Warners next week. This is the boxed set that contains MGM's versions of A TALE OF TWO CITIES, DAVID COPPERFIELD, MARIE ANTOINETTE, TREASURE ISLAND, and DR Elmore's least favorite PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Can't wait to have these on DVD.
THey are available separately if you want to pick up one or two of them only. The boxed set is really a good buy - about $7 per movie.

"Eureka" -- Possible SPOILERS:
I've rather liked this SciFi Channel show since its premiere -- what was it? -- six weeks ago?
At any rate, there can't have been more than six or seven episodes, yet last night was the "season FINALE."
Don't know what's up with that...except that SciFi seems to be taking shows and splitting their seasons. "Stargate-SG-1", for instance, started up back in early July. Later, word was released that this season would be the final one for the show. Two weeks ago, however, the "season finale" aired....and it was a "to-be-continued" cliffhanger. The series resumes in January....obviously, it's a "split" season.
All that said, last night's episode of "Eureka" was really interesting, imaginative and fun. I don't have the kind of "scientific mind" to know whether there's any credence to what's being discussed, proposed, etc. But I can relate to the sheriff's situation of having to live and work in the environment...and Colin Ferguson plays the sheriff to perfection.
I've barely gotten "into" the show...and now it's on hiatus.
Oh, yes my friends....the landscape of television -- as we knew it -- has changed.

Greetings from Omaha....yes I'm still in Omaha, don't know where jhvw is, last I heard after a one hour delay he had been sitting on the tarmac in Kansas City for 45 minutes. There are all sorts of problems in Chicago. I heard someone tallking about problems with our flight, so I got in line immediately and was able to transfer to Midwest airlines going through Milwaukee. Upside - hot chocolate chip cookies.
I'll get to LaGuardia about 4:30 if everything goes well. If not who knows. I don't know when jhvw will get there.
LOL What an advenure. I hope Jon is doing ok and not stressing too much. SO....we'll get there when we get there...

Where I work, we order most of our books and DVDs from Baker & Taylor. They list the title (both paper & hardback) as an import and show the distributor as "Gardners Books," which is a distribution company from England! And B&T has the hardback price as $47.55!
But my question is how can there already be "used" books available in both paper and hardback, when it hasn't even officially been published yet??

I'm back from the eye doctor. I had drops put into my eyes and now my pupils are the size of saucers. But, since the eye doctor was downtown near J&R Records I was able to pick up the CD of Grey Gardens for a mere $14 as opposed to $19 everywhere else.
Oh, yes. Things look OK with the eyes. He said the hematoma was (to quote Cole Porter) just one of those things. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my eyes. That's good news.

The oversized rear wheels are slanted inward, and move backward for highway cruising, optimizing space when retracted for city driving and enhancing stability in conjunction with a deployable rear wing at higher speeds.
The "car of tomorrow" would theoretically employ a hybrid or electric power plant if it were actually built. Kinda looks like a cross between an alien and an iPod.

Wednesday greetings! After our plans with DR Elmore changed for today, DH Richard and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and do something we've always wanted to do here - the 3-hour Circle Line cruise around Manhattan. We sailed at noon and returned at 3pm. It was a little hazy, but otherwise the conditions were perfect. We are now relaxing in our hotel before going to Joe Allen for dinner and then to see Cynthia Nixon in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

I did watch VERONICA MARS first. I think I'm going to like the show even more this season. She's in college, and the vibe there is different than in high school, at least, it was for me. And the new students should make for a fun new set of characters.

Next came a thoroughly entertaining BOSTON LEGAL. Very funny last night; I laughed out loud several times watching it this afternoon. And now James Spader's infatuation with Candace Bergen should make for some entertaining rivalry with Denny at the firm.

I did not laugh once at HELP YOU, HELP ME. I suspect this may be the last time I watch the show. It just isn't funny.

I did enjoy LAW & ORDER: SVU. Leslie Caron had some nice moments, but Robin Weigart (who played Calamity Jane on DEADWOOD) stole the show as a rape victim. She gave a sensational performance. I like Connie Neilsen as the new (temporary) partner for Stabler. In fact, I'd rather see her join the cast permanently and let Ice-T go.

I finished the afternoon watching the last episode on THE WILD WILD WEST boxed set. It had to do with an insane scientist planning to poison the water supply of San Francisco so an outlaw band can come in and loot the city.
Fun episode but no guest stars of any notable fame.

I like that new guy piz (wallace's roomie). He has a major crush on veronica and i would imagine he is a future love interest for her. I would be very surprised if he was the rapist, since he is now a main character and will be on the show a lot. In fact it never occured to me.
I think we are supposed to think perhaps dick did it (since he went to logan's and said how sorry he was). But i don't believe that either.
I love that they are at college. I love the vibe. I love the new opening. I love that veronica is taking criminology. That should be great.
I am not too crazy about mac's roomie. But hopefully she will improve. But i am happy mac is on full time now.
The parts with veronica's dad were quite confusing. Although i think i've managed to piece together a few things. That guy he picked up was the fitzpatrick brother (the one kendall was involved with). His brother liam was after kendall. I wonder if she is really dead (or if they faked her death).
I'm not really sure if vinnie's pen (in veronica's dad's briefcase) means that vinnie is working for liam. Or if vinnie will somehow arrive to save keith.
Overall great first show. This is really one of my top top favorites (besides TAR and LOST). Watching that first scene with veronica at school just reminded me why i love this show so much. I was grinning.

At any rate, there can't have been more than six or seven episodes, yet last night was the "season FINALE."

I did hear from Jon, and both he and Cillaliz were making their way from LGA around 5:30. So, they should have made it into the city in plenty of time to make their show tonight. *Although, I just walked over from the East Side, and the traffic was surprisingly heavy - even for rush hour. In any case, they're here!

First of all, a big Thank You to DR FJL for his continued kindness and generosity. It was a truly generous gesture allowing me to accompany him to the theatre this past afternoon.
Secondly, as for the show... Well, I liked it. But I just wish I had loved it - and I really wanted to love it. Alas, even after giving "them" a couple of benefits of the doubt, all I can say is that "I liked it."
I won't go into details (just yet), but it was a bit interesting sitting in the theatre watching and listening and experiencing the show. I did see the show during it's original Broadway run about two years before it closed. Additionally, I've also done the show a couple of times. And each of those times has involved personnel from the original production: the assistant choreographer, the musical supervisor who happened to be the original pianist(!), and various cast members from the original, second, third, touring, etc. casts. So...
All I will say right now, is that I do want to see it again. And, hopefully, I won't sit there the whole time noticing all the differences - although some of the differences are truly a bit too hard to ignore. More importantly, I hope to see it without recalling all the various tips and tricks - spotting off the light pole stage right during the "Swan Lake" sequence, how to know how many vamps until you make your entrance, when to start passing the hats at the end of the Cassie and Zach confrontation. etc. - that I learned in the rehearsal room when I've worked on the show. In short, I found myself being very analytical and perhaps hypercritical while watching the show today.
I did like it. I just really want to enjoy it.

*On the way out of the theatre, I heard a gentleman asking his girlfriend why they had cut the number, "Smile". Well... I just had to chime in and inform that that number was only in the movie. Then he went on to ask why they had given "What I Did For Love" to Morales. Well... I had to chime in again...

Nope, it was twelve episodes. (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0796264/episodes) The first aired July 18th.
Don't forget, when they aired the first season of the new Doctor Who, the season ran for just thirteen episodes. That's what the BBC ordered, that's what SciFi got. This second season will run fourteen eps, but that's because they (SciFi) ran the Christmas special ("The Christmas Invasion") as part of the regular season... but then they (again SciFi) also ran the special and the season's first true episode back to back.
You get what you pay for. Looks like the producers of EUReKA only paid for twelve.

After the matinee, I was able to catch a few friends coming out of the stage door - performers and musicians. Regardless of what I thought of the production - any production - it always wonderful seeing people you know coming out of the stage door. Just like Morales say in the show... "You've made it!" -Or something like that. Sorry, my blood sugar is a little low right now...

I have achey feet (another day of cart wrangling), and it's time to get dinner going...
Dixie, my direct boss, told me that she and the rest of the management team now have me listed as both a cashier and cart wrangler in the computer. This way, she and they can now schedule me for the wrangling one day per week, and schedule enough cashiers for that day as well. Before this, I've been wrangling under a cashier schedule, which has cut into how many cashiers they've been able to have on staff at any time. No wonder the other cashiers have been working like crazy lately!
This is a part-time job, by the way. This week, they've got me scheduled for forty-four hours! I'm working harder now that I'm semi-retired than I did before I took early retirement!

Here's a theory...
Could the Auntie Mame song have been written and published before the film was released, as part of the pre-release publicity? It then could simply have not been used in the film, for whatever reason, and disappeared from the public eye.

I'm up, I'm up. My publisher is trying to figure out why amazon has added a "sourcing fee" to the latest book - it makes the hardcover cost $44.10! Neither of us have ever seen such a thing and it certainly wasn't there when the book first went up. I'd called amazon yesterday, and they told me it could have only come from the publisher. The publisher tells me they've never heard of such a thing and that it absolutely didn't come from them. The fun never stops at amazon - the publisher is supposedly calling them to discuss.
Keith, the ex-publisher, says a sourcing fee makes sense from a bookseller’s perspective. I found the following quote Amazon wrote to a customer “We add a sourcing fee for special order titles and other selected items because of the additional costs associated with processing these orders.” The sourcing fee in that situation was a $1.00, which is more in line with the amount Keith would expect.

There has never been a sourcing fee on amazon for any book that I've ever seen, including my other five, and certainly not from my publisher. amazon can't explain it, but they're fixing it supposedly.
I have been looking for the "inspired by" song from Vertigo (the sheet music) forever. I have it in a fake book, but I want the real deal. Drifting is an odd title for the Auntie Mame song. The first bar, the lyric that fits the tune would be, of course, Auntie Mame, Auntie Ma-ame, but I don't know what music drifting would fit.

Jane the nuts and candies are soemthing that the Girsl Scouts here have been doing at least 9 years as they have been doing it as long the Vixter has been in Girl Scouts but I do not recall ever seeing them before she joined so it may have started aroun then. They now do magazine sales and nuts and candies inthe fall and cookies inthe spring,,, I don't mind shilling the cookioes as they are somethin gthat peoiple truly seem to enjoy and the prices seemed inline with what you'd pay in the grocery stores for a similar products but I will not push magazine subscriptions at people.
I understand that some fundraising is necessary but after a while it starts to seem like she joined Future Saleswomen of Amercia rather than Girl Scouts.... of course the schools are just as bad everytime you turna round they are sending home a fundraising envelope... funny I don't remember having any fundingraising when I went to school (of course that was back in the stone age)

I spent a good deal of time on the phone tonight after I cleaned the den, so I only had time to watch the season finale from THE CLOSER's first season DVD set. Just love the opening when all her squad is making fun of her, and she enjoys their jokes. Finally, she starts to feel like she fits in. I loved that moment when I first saw it, and I love seeing it again and again.

I agree with you, DR Jennifer. In fact, I'm convinced that if someone were not a fan of VERONICA MARS previously and watched the first 10 minutes of the show's premiere, they would become an instant fan based on that opening scene.
Sad to say, there was no bump in the ratings from its status last year. It opened to the same rating it did last season.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS didn't start off with a strong rating either. Of course, it's facing two of the most popular shows on TV right now: DANCING WITH THE STARS and NCIS, and any sports minded men were probably watching the baseball playoffs last night instead of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS even with its football motif. It finished fourth in the time slot.

BONES had a somewhat different case tonight involving a murder involving a COlombian family protected by diplomatic immunity. The murderer was something of a surprise.

LOST had a brilliant season premiere full of the kind of enigmatic occurrences that have kept it a ratings winner for two years now.

I enjoyed THE NINE, too. The characters have good foundations on which to build our interest and curiosity, and I can't wait for the flashbacks into their 52 hour hostage situation to begin, I suppose next week.

I got my Amazon shipping notice for THE LITTLE MERMAID. It just shipped today, so I can't expect it until at least Friday, probably Saturday, and maybe not until Monday.
I never bought the last DVD since it was an enhanced transfer, but I took out my laserdisc tonight and may try to watch it over the next day or two just to see it on laserdisc for probably the last time.

Greetings from 8th Ave and 45th Street!!! It was an adventure getting here today, but really wasn't bad for either of us, just lots of delays. Chicago and Milwaukee got nailed with a heavy storm this morning so we were stuck with lots of delays. I re-routed completely because our plane was broken. Jon was able to make his flights because the second was as delayed as the first. He landed about 4:30 PM. I arrived at 5:00PM. By the time we got to the hotel - lots of traffic, checked in and got to the room it was about 6:45 PM. We just had time to clean up and get to the theatre in time to see ACL

Don't know if Jose and Jon like pina coladas, but they definitely got caught in the rain tonight. Just as I left them in Shubert Alley and went into Junior's to get something to eat, there was a torrential downpour. Last I saw them, they were walking down the street. If they got out of the rain they were lucky. I had a lovely BLT and a piece of raspberry swirl cheesecake and waited til the rain started to let up just a little and made my way back to the hotel.

We enjoyed A CHORUS LINE tonight. Jon didn't know anything about it other than he'd heard the OCR and he really liked it. I saw it in London in 1977 and New York in 1978. I liked it. I didn't love it and agree with a lot of what I've read here. There were really good moments for me, but overall it just didn't have the power it had before. I'm glad I saw it, though.

So, time for me to say goodnight. Our room isn't bad. It's fairly small, but since it has 2 double beds, it isn't tiny. It's an interior room, so it's really pretty quiet.

In all my goings on about the NY trip I did forget to mention one thing - one night during rehearsal, we had to change rooms (at least I don't think I told this story) - we went to our new room - the group in there were wrapping up a casting session. As I entered, I looked around and didn't really recognize anyone until my eyes lit on Mr. John Kander (it was a casting session for Skin Of Our Teeth). I went over to him and he seemed actually happy to see me - we had a nice little chat and he went on his merry way. Before he did, he asked what I was doing, and when I mentioned Starfighter he seemed to have heard of it.

I literally just now actually realized that not only am I going to move (since I just bought a condo), but that I actually NEED TO MOVE!! :o WHAT IN HELL AM I WAITING FOR?? ;)
Tomorrow, I'm going to call to have the carpet cleaned, but the first two floors only...the top floor looks good. I'll also need to call to have the utilities put in my name: water, power, cable. And then, I'll start moving stuff this weekend. AND take a bit o' time to meet DRs Tomovoz and Colin!

Well... after waiting about 20 minutes for the A Train back uptown, I'm now back uptown. However, before I caught the train, I was able to spend some time showing DR jhvw around midtown for a bit. And since he was working Spamalot tonight former-but-soon-to-return-he-promises DR Jason joined us for a bit.
As DR Cillaliz mentioned, there was quite the torrential downpour, and, yes, we did get caught in it. We just went from awning to awning, until the rain died down a little bit until we ended up over at Don't Tell Mama.
After hanging out there for a bit, Jason headed home, and I took Jon up to Renaissance Diner to get some food in his stomach. -The bartender was being very generous at Don't Tell Mama tonight. ;) After devouring a plate of sweet potato fries, we then headed around the corner to Therapy. Alas, it did look like the rain kept everybody home - or it was most likely the reunion show of "Project Runway" - so it was a bit dead, but still, in retrospect it was a good way to get introduced to one of the various "special interest establishments" in NYC. ;)
Then it was back to the Milford Plaza for Jon, and uptown for me. -See you in a couple of hours, Jon!
