I'm just back from seeing DRNoel's "And Then He Wrote . . ." The Songs of Irving "Squeaky" Klein at the Second City Training Center. The show was a goof, and DRNoel was the musical genius at the piano. I wanted to stay and talk to him about it but there several reasons I left, the first and foremost being that I've been out late every night since Monday, I was dragging, and I still had things to do at home concerning my surgery before bed. The second reason was that, while there were several good performances, I didn't want to say anything critical in that small confined space.

It wasn't until I got outside and walked home that I realized how hot and stuffy it was in the performance space and how drowzy I was feeling. I think my favorite moment was a Latin number about Lucy dancing the hootchy-kootchy. The music was sassy, the singer funny, but she was so quiet I missed a few lyrics.

DRNoel played quite nicely and exuberantly, and outside of the deliberate ripoff of "They Can't Take That Away from Me," I have no idea how much of the music was his. There were some wonderful moments, but a lot of them were tempered by the limited singing abilities of some of the cast. All said, DRNoel deserves a hand for his excellent work.

Let's you're arranging and/or arranging Jacques Brel' Carousel and you musical quote Richard Rodgers' Carousel (Which I don't know if it is a good idea or not) but does one also pay royalities to the Rodgers estate?

I don’t believe I have even seen previews for House of Flying Daggers. My paper says it is “coming soon”. Guess I will have to wait on this one.

First of all, DRMichaelShayne, I wouldn't quote the Carousel Waltz because I don't feel it and the Brel song are in the same ballpark, even further away in French where the song is the Waltz With a Thousand Beats!

The quote from Rodgers would have to be less than 4 bars, I think, to avoid copyright violation, and I, as an arranger, wouldn't want people wondering what they were hearing in the background when they should be focusing on the singer. Too many arranger/pianists in the cabaret world, and several I've worked with, forget it's about the singer and not the accompaniment.

Thanks to the wonderful suggestions from various HHWers I have now purchased my first digital camera!! Woohoo! I bought the Kodak EasyShare CX7430. It has 4.0 mp, 3X zoom, and a bunch of other stuff that I don't have the foggiest knowledge of! LOL! But I think it will be a good camera for me! Thanks all!

Tomovoz, Not sure what you're talking about "Relative Values"? The "Star Quality" that I saw on stage with Penelope Keith was about two years ago, called Star Quality, was adapted and directed by the same guy and stank. I do remember a Star quality...I believe also called Star Quality, back in the late seventies or early eighties, a Brit TV movie. Can't remember who starred in it, but it was delightful.

It seems to me I read or heard somewhere where Sondheim at liked the current Sweeney.

Thanks, DR Elmore, for being there to witness our mad experiment, a completely improvised songwriter songbook revue. Counting tonight, the entire show received 26 hours of rehearsal. A cast of eight mastered the art of song improvisation well enough to present an amusing and varied act consisting of dances, classical music, hippie happening "be-in" craziness, an Astrid Gilberto type number with ppp singing (that stands for "quieter than is humanly possible"), protest songs, beach musical silliness, post-war jazz, the obligatory inebriated male duet, a torch song, the echt 80's pop duet, and something that sounded suspiciously like Gershwin called I'd Be Lost Without That. The cast can't wait to do it again, but they'll have to. Some of us are exhausted!

Loved LOST and loved how it grips you early and keeps you gripped for the entire hour, and then doesn't let you off the hook due to other cliffhangers. Fabulous series.
