Tonight we had a pancake supper at church. I ate all my dinner, so you know what THAT means:

LOL! Great Shot.

Well, I'm not going to stay any longer tonight. I have been working and need to get some sleep. It was a really busy day today  and I think tomorrow will be the same.

I rewatched SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM tonight before the start of IDOL. Enjoyed Chad Allen's performance very much, especially his recollection of his Army lover. Beautiful, sad moment.

The note of melancholy that runs through much of this film is strong. Yet, there are enough light-hearted moments to take the edge off the nasty side of things.

Really good show.

As for IDOL, I thought this was BY FAR the weakest group of semifinalists they've EVER had. Until Blake sang (#7 in a group of 12), every singer was either flat, uninspired, or bland.

After Blake, we had the best vocals that were to be sung tonight (though none of them inspired me enough to cast a single vote). Chris S. had the best vocal of the night and Phil (man whose wife had the baby during auditions) showed he had power and control after a very shaky start.

But the rest - ugh! Boy band wannabees, amateurs in the worst sense of the word (no stage presence, no control over their volume, wretched overuse of falsetto).

Hopefully, some of the women will step up tomorrow night and do something special. Tonight, I felt nothing special was happening with the men.

Might I just ask if TPunk and Rodzinski have just abandoned this here site?  Most unseemly, if you ask me.

DIRT had an OK episode. I'm not really interested in the relationship between the publisher and the reporter. Don seemed on a lot firmer ground tonight, and I loved how he helped Lucy when she was so much in need. The cover story plot was forgettable.

Yesterday I had Tivo record THE HAWAIIANS from TCM which I watched tonight.  Except the recording ended before the movie had finished.  That's never happened to me before.  TCM is usually right on the money as far as their scheduling is concerned, but this time they dropped the ball.

Not that it's any great tragedy.  THE HAWAIIANS is a lousy movie with only one good performance (Tina Chen).  Charlton Heston sleepwalks through the entire film--if he ever showed more than two expressions during the whole thing I must have missed it.

Isn't it a bit of irony that I just finished listening to the soundtrack of The Hawaiians by Mr. Henry Mancini.

DR MBarnum, to answer your question about DVDs and HDTVs.

The quality of the movie source you're feeding into the TV will either be complemented by its HDTV capabilities or betrayed by them if the source is less than sterling.

Videotape looks relatively poor on these sets because the resolution of a typical VHS tape is so low (280 scan lines). If a DVD has been produced from a low quality source (say a DVD from a videotape), it's not going to look any better than a videotape would look.

Analog TV signals have a similar problem. Digital sets and analog signals don't shake hands very well, so unless your TV has a very good scaler that can take the analog signal and process it to remove artifacts and clean up the lower resolution, it's never going to look as clean and crisp as the best DVDs (480 scan lines) or true HDTV signals (which can have up to 1,080 scan lines).

I've just found out that a record label has recorded the complete score to Miklos Rozsa's Spellbound (just how more complete it can be is anyone's guess - we had a rather marvelous recording conducted by Heindorf on Warner Bros. records and Stanyan CD).  I'm told they located a theremin for the recording.  I am dismayed that they didn't come to the preeminent West Coast theremin player, Dr. BK.

Mr. Mancini's score was one of THE HAWAIIANS' few graces.

I will have four one hour shows to watch tomorrow that I recorded tonight while I watched other things.

If I get through those and there is still time, I may have to break into the MR. MOTO 2 box, though if I get any DVDs in the mail, I may go with them first and save MR. MOTO for the weekend.

Did anyone enterprising try to sell the Moto Car?  I bet it would've been big in its day.
