I like a nice cream puff with whipped cream.
Did you try Beard Papa's Puff when you're in NYC?
"it's" means it is. "its" is the possessive.
So it's a chicken with its head cut off.
I have two favorite pasteries,
An Eclair but it must have custard and not whip cream.
Now I know it as Mille Feuille. (I think I spelled it right) It translates as Thousand Flakes Again it must have custard and not whip cream. But sure what it is called in the USA

I have a question.
Is "A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF " an idiomatic phrase?
Or has a special meaning? ???

Can someone tell me again what the dates of the HHW get together in NYC in October
Good morning, DR GINNY!
I had my favorite chocolate cake, as I mentioned a few hours ago. :P
It was YUM as usual. :D
When I taught, those two problems (it's-your) along with students confusing "to-too-two" and the infuriating habit of students making "a lot" into one word ("alot") were the most common spelling errors I experienced at the junior high/middle school level.
"Your" and "you're" are actually the same problem as with "it's" and "its" with the mix-up over possessives versus contractions. The problem is that with these near-sound alikes, the kids were writing the first word that popped into their heads rather than thinking what the words themselves actually mean. I suspect adults do the same thing when they're writing and in a hurry.
What??!!! And "mary, marry and merry" never caused any problems???????
:D
(You are welcome, TomovOz!)
"there," "they're" and "their" often cause problems, as well.
Speaking of possessives and the like: one of my big pet peeves is "your" vs. "you're." Don't they teach these things anymore? I have gotten more letters/emails from supposedly highly educated people substituting one for the other and it kind of bugs me. (Time to get a life, I know).
And the word of the day is: POLENTA!Also known as grits. (Or, quite similar in how they are made, although Southerners are more likely to mix in some cheddar than Parmesan.)
Laura: I just spoke with a customer who lives in your Dale. I'm sorry to say she wasn't nearly as pleasant and friendly as you are.
I read an article about J. K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter books) somewhere on the Internet earlier today which said that she's richer than the Queen of England! Who'da thunk it??(Spoken in a highly stentorian, John Houseman tone): The Queen of England made her money the old fashioned way...she inHerited it!
DRHisaka, it's actually a rather graphic description. when my family used to visit my Father's mother in Appalachia, she'd go out to the yard where her chickens were wandering around pecking the gound for food; she'd chase one down, wring its neck until she could pull off the head, and the headless bird in its death throes would wander aimlessly about the yard till it fell over. She'd do the same to two or three other birds and that's how we had fried chicken for dinnerPreferably plucked and gutted, I hope! :-\
Watching "The High and the Mighty" last night, I found it interesting to hear one of the characters use the phrase "....and get a load of this..."I'll ask some of the baggers at work when I get a chance. They're mostly around fifteen/sixteen, and a good resource for information.
It reminded me that I had heard this phrase most of my life until probably the last 20 years....
...But what would younger folks today make of "...get a load of this..."???
What is this Beard Papa cream puff that everyone is going on about? Is it a New York thing? Jose...when you get back up here, I think you need to introduce me to these things. Here is a link to the Beard Papa website http://www.muginohousa.com/

They go into great detail about the making of the vanilla custard- yum!
Preferably plucked and gutted, I hope! :-\

Which makes me wonder...does a castrati's voice necessarily sound like that of an angel, or do some of them sound like squealing pigs?
:o
Mmmmm....Krispy Kremes. You know, for this being one of the largest metropolitan, cosmopolitan areas in the world, I think it's a crime that there are only two Krispy Kreme stores in this city (that I'm aware of, anyway) and they're 55 blocks apart from one another!...There are more stores than two in NYC. I counted five, using KK's locator (http://clients.mapquest.com/krispy/mqinterconnec).
GUY HAINES WAS IN MY MAILBOX TODAY!!!
OK...so there are FOUR Krispy Kremes in New York. One of the five listed stores only has donuts delivered to them from one of the "factories," so it doesn't count. But still...FOUR??? There should be at least 10 in Manhattan alone. One on every corner - like Starbucks. And we need at least two in Astoria. Yes, I said two - one for me and one for the rest of them. :)The thought of New York City on a sugar high is scary. :o
And where the frell are the Chik-Fil-A stores in New York?? I need my chicken nuggets and waffle fries!!There are none.

Ingredients: Potatoes, may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening (soybean oil and/or canola) and/or palm oil, disodium dihydrogen pyrophosphate (to promote color retention), dextrose, Peanut Oil (fully refined peanut oil with TBHQ and citric acid added to preserve freshness and dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent added)
DR JMK, I'm going to Portland for a meeting from Aug 3-7.
And where the frell are the Chik-Fil-A stores in New York?? I need my chicken nuggets and waffle fries!!I LOVE Chick Fil A!! They have them in New Jersey. Rodzinski and I indulge when we do our weekend roadtrips to suburbia. I think what makes them so amazing is that the buns are SOAKED in butter.
Have you ever been to "La Farine" in Oakland (near Berkeley) on College Avenue?I've never been there, but it looks amazing. I will have to check it out on my next trip to Cali!
Their pastries are TO DIE FOR. The morning buns are heaven, but their "chocolatines" are out of this world!

Last night from CillalizCilaliz we will also be in Portland those dates. We are going to a wedding on the evening of the 6th and we have a son to visit. I hope we can all get together. MBarnum doesn't live far and possibly the Washington crowd will drive down.
DRDan(theMan), I tried to send you a PM; your box is full.
DearReaderLaura, how can you tolerate that heat year after year???
I remember one year on my mother's sister's farm, my father and Uncle Harold castrated hundreds of piglets.
Also dismaying how many people refer to a death in a body of water by saying somebody "drownded."
I can't remember if it was the first or the second season, but one of the fired "Apprentice" contestants was being interviewed by Matt Lauer on The Today Show. She said something about being "casted" on the show for some specific reason and Matt asked her about being "cast" on the show (subtly correcting her) and again, she said "yes, I was casted..." ::)Maybe her language skills were the reason she was fireded.
Where'd you find the Liza info??
And where are the Streisand TV shows on DVD??????
"Applause" would be wonderful to see again too.
The TV may have not been all that is should be but it would still be wonderful to have Bacall's performance in the collection of DVDs - and indeed the show itself.
Yes Ron that's the one - I saw the London stage production in 1973. It was back in the days when you could order afternoon tea to be brought to your seat at interval. Trays with Tea, fruitcake etc.
And Colin doesn't take tea orders???I make better tea.
:D

Cillaliz & Jane, August 5 looks like the best bet. We're having Gabe's birthday party on Betsy's actual birthday, August 6 (we'll be on the road when Gabe's actual birthday hits).

An appreciative OzDerek says hello to all and thank you so much for the support.
Today(about six hours to go) is National Oceans Day (a real national holiday)
It comes from…Our small land is surrounded by many different named oceans. And the rainy season is usually over around this day (the third Monday in July) every year, so we can go swimming in the ocean for a moment just before summery typhoons come.
However, I prefer to swim in a pool, as I hate to be bitten (stung?) by jellyfishes and that sands come inside of my swimwear.
Love to be on the beach under a parasol. 8)
"Barnyard Animals"
Oh the cow in the meadow goes "moo"
Oh the cow in the meadow goes "moo"
Then the farmer hits him on the head and grinds him up
And that's how we get hamburgers.
Noooowwwww chickens!
--- From Phoebe's songs, "Friends"
I rarely ever laugh out loud, but I just did...
I remember years ago, Cyndi Lauper was on the Arsenio Hall Show (it was that long ago) and she had a grammar quiz for Arsenio. She had written on a chalkboard a run-on sentence and Arsenio had to correctly punctuate it. This is the sentence:
Where John had had had Jane had had had had had had had had the teacher's approval.
I think I've posted this before, but can anyone correctly punctuate this and turn it into two complete sentences? ;)
Just heard from Rodzinski about his first day at the new job. He went out to lunch at Taco Bell with some of his new co-workers so things sound as if they are going well. I'll let him share more details with you himself.

Unfortunately, I will be down at Triangle Lake with my family that weekend celabrating my sister and brother-in-law's 35 years of wedded bliss.

I can make the 5th work. There's a reception that night at the Pittock Mansion, but I've been there before, so I can skip it and would gladly do so to meet you guys.
Great! What time?
Where John had had "had," Jane had had "had had"; "had had" had had the teacher's approval.
John wrote "had" on the test, but the correct usage was "had had," which Jane got right.

Yes, Hisaka, it is an idiom denoting wild and chaotic activity, frequently with no purpose.
And just so that there is no confusion, there is no prize whatsoever. Just the knowledge that you got it! ;D
This is very true. It chagrins me no end to see I've made similar errors after having posted an entry. Many times, I've modified posts to correct typos, missed letters and errant contractions/possessives.
And I know I've missed a few, too!
The grammatical errors that drive me nuts involve number agreement.
I think DR HISAKA posted the loveliest picture EVER! Wow - that looks like Death by Chocolate!
I feel exactly the same way. It's not nice to feel something touch you and you don't know what it is. Not to mention we have to do the Sting Ray shuffle or risk getting stung. :'( That HURTS!
Yep, DR Michael Shayne, I know that dessert as Mille Feuille too!
DRDan(theMan), I tried to send you a PM; your box is full. I tried to email you and got bounced. I wearing my welcome out everywhere!
Back to work.
Now that's my sort of humour.Didn't they have their Grammy taken away?
I want Krispy Kremes right now. They had the most amazing "specialty" donut back in the spring: chocolate creme-filled chocolate glazed donut. OY!
FYI for those who are dying to be "in the know": MTI officially has picked up RENT, WICKED, CAPTAIN LOUIE, DESSA ROSE and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. Our CEO is currently in a meeting with the representatives of a certain "member of royalty" whose songs are currently featured in a Broadway show for which we are trying to get the rights and we're still trying to figure out what's happening with AVENUE Q.

TCB at least you noticed. I was thinking you and George had missed it, now I realize you were just insulted. ::) So......
Maybe TCB, George, Ann & Jed can join us! :D :D :D :D
Is that better? ;D
Oh, what a lovely idea! I will have to check my calendar. :o :o :o :o
TCB-;D I hope your calendar is free-the laughs in person would be wonderful. :)

If any New York H/Ks see this, could you see if you could procure a July 18 issue of the New York Sun? Evidently there is a (really, really bad) review of the play St. Frances of Hollywood, but the review may reference my research on Frances. I just got a cryptic email (do I get any other kind about FF? :) ) and the hits on my web article have just shot up this afternoon, so I'm wondering if it might be true. I will gladly repay you Tuesday for a New York Sun today (a Wimpy/Popeye reference).
I never thought I would see the day that JMK
would start using wimpy references!
TCB I was afraid you would be performing. I will just think of all the other people whose lives will be enriched because you entertained them.
George- :D
Thank you, Jane, what a lovely thing to say.

Although, I'm thinking we should start and end with the wallking tour portion. We can start at the Westway Diner on 9th for breakfast, or down in the Lower East Side and The Donut Plant, or down in Chelsea Market at Sarabeth's or Amy's Breads, or....
Then we can walk to Magnolia Bakery for a cupcake or two... Then to Chocolate Bar for a truffle or two... The the Krispy Kreme in the Village... Or John's Pizza... Or Cones for some gelato... or back over to the LES for some fish & chips at A Salt & Battery. -And, yes, they do serve Scotch Eggs!
Then in the late afternoon, we can check out The Chippery in Chelsea (they make custom batches of potato, sweet potato and/or beet chips to order - great dipping sauces too!)... Then to F&B (Frankfurters & Beignets) for some great "European" street food (and, yes, they have smoked tofu dogs - and fried green beans!)... And if it's the right day, we can check out the Green Market in Union Square (breads, vegetables, etc.. even wine!)... -And a new Whole Foods just opened across the street...
Or if you want to stroll up Fifth Avenue... There's Maison du Chocolat... Minamoto Kitchoan for exquisite Japanese sweets... Or we can do full Japanese tea in the Tea Room at Takashimaya... Perhaps a wine tasting at Morelli... There are a couple of great falafel and kebab carts long that stretch too.
And then to finish off the day... We can go up 8th Ave... Dinner at Artie's... Perhaps some dim sum at Ollie's... A Beard Papa Cream Puff or two (although, I'm going to have to try their Mango Over Shaved Ice dessert sometime next week)... Then up a few more blocks to H&H to stock up on some bagels (unless you want to go to the Hell's Kitchen location)... And Zabar's, of course!
And then there's Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, Long Island, The Bronx...etc., etc., etc...
Oops... I forgot about Williams-Sonoma!
Nice view DR Jose!
And I am looking forward to that food walk! Although my blood sugar rose just reading about it! LOL!
I might be available! ;D
Great photos, DRJOSE....is that your door in the first photo just to the left of the staircase?
The Priority Mail envelope is a bit worse for wear, bent and creased, but it was still sealed and the CD case was NOT cracked or broken.
Also, I thin it's safe to say that we will achieve our new plateau by tomorrow.
