Title: LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF
Post by: bk on July 18, 2005, 12:05:31 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've imagined a chicken with its head cut off, or even it's head cut off, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home with their heads cut off.  Isn't that a lovely image?

My fav pastry is a chocolate eclair.  It was all I could do to resist those tempting me from under the glass display counter at Jerry's Deli last night.  Yum!

I've finished with Saturday's posts!  Now for yesterday's (Sunday).

I will admit that during my errant and truantness, I was able to listen to Donald's Broadway Radio Show (http://www.haineshisway.com/radio/) when BK talked about the new Kritzerland (http://www.kritzerland.com/) label and played selections from After the Ball (http://www.kritzerland.com/AfterTheBall.html) and the new Guy Haines (http://www.kritzerland.com/GuyHaines.html) CD.  I can't wait to get them!!

And what in the world does polena have to do with pastries??  Sounds rather icky to me. :P ;)

I, too, love a chocolate eclair.
Tonight,  my favorite chocolate cake from Tops (a shop of long standing for chocolate cake) is now with me and would be disappeared in two hours.  With five layers, with chocolate sponge and chocolate flavored whipped cream with deep roasted walnuts, covered with chocolate whip cream. It’s simple but sooooo delicious.

Today(about six hours to go) is National Oceans Day (a real national holiday)
It comes from…Our small land is surrounded by many different named oceans. And the rainy season is usually over around this day (the third Monday in July) every year, so we can go swimming in the ocean for a moment just before summery typhoons come.
However, I prefer to swim in a pool, as I hate to be bitten (stung?) by jellyfishes and that sands come inside of my swimwear.
Love to be on the beach under a parasol. 8)

DRHisaka, I had one just last week, and quite tasty it was!  I think it's my current favorite pastry.

Good morning, all!  I have a lot of writing to do, so I'll be E&T most of the day.
This has been a weekend of very bizarre dreams.  Last night's involved Barbara Cook, but I think Judy Collins put in a guest appearance, a resort by a river, and a discussion of CANDIDE.  I'm going back to drugs.

I have two favorite pasteries,

An Eclair but it must have custard and not whip cream.

Now I know it as Mille Feuille. (I think I spelled it right) It translates as Thousand Flakes  Again it must have custard and not whip cream. But sure what it is called in the USA

Good morning DR's Michael s and Elmore. And it's goodnight from me.
Tonight's viewing was an Oz made movie called "Crackerjack". A re-viewing after a year or so and it is still very funny. I wonder if it was released in the USA. It is a good companion piece to "The Road To Nhill" made a few years back.

"it's" means it is. "its" is the possessive.

So it's a chicken with its head cut off.

I am back after a restful and relaxing time on Long Island. I was there from Wednesday through yesterday. We did have to help Anthony's mother with MacGregor. He's a West Highland terrier (for those of you who didn't know) and he has recently been diagnosed as diabetic. Well, the cataracts came on very quickly and his sight has deteriorated quickly. While we were in Centereach we went with Rose to the vet's office to get MacGregor checked out. He needs some tests to see if he is a candidate for cataract surgery and if so, sometime in the next month he will go in to have his sight restored.. Other than that it was a quiet, albeit somewhat rainy and muggy, time on LI. Last night we watched the DVD of A Star is Born w/Janet Gaynor and Frederick March. Quite nice.

I have read all the notes but I have not begun to read the posts from Wednesday through Sunday. That will take some time. I am caught up here though, which is good for me.

A nice cherry danish is a good thing.

"Mille Feuille" translates - at least according to my culinary and French-language knowledge - as "thousand leaves" - due to all the layers in the puff-pastry.  The pic you posted looks like a Napoleon to me - although I know American pastry chefs have adapted that name for any sort of layered pastry.

Correct, DR Cillaliz, about "it's" and "its."

Personal pronouns in English have their own possessive forms which do not require apostrophes. "His" for "he" and "their" for "they." "Its" is the possessive form for "it."

Apostrophes with personal pronouns imply contractions where two words have been joined together with one or more letters omitted.

I think I mentioned my favorite pastry some months ago. When I was on the swimming team as a teen, we used to go to the uptown bakery after practice each morning and buy sweets. Not sure exactly why we craved those rather than REAL food, but we did. At any rate, they made this fluffy pastry called a cream horn. The confection was bigger than a standard cream puff though it had the same basic idea, and it was flakier than a cream puff. Simply wonderful.

This next week will be renamed Sauna Carolina around here. Temps every day will be in the mid-90s with 100% humidity. When I went out to get the newspaper this morning close to 8 a.m., it was already 79 degrees, and it was oppressively humid.

This will be a great week to stay inside and watch movies.

DRHisaka, it's actually a rather graphic description.  when my family used to visit my Father's mother in Appalachia, she'd go out to the yard where her chickens were wandering around pecking the gound for food; she'd chase one down, wring its neck until she could pull off the head, and the headless bird in its death throes would wander aimlessly about the yard till it fell over.   She'd do the same to two or three other birds and that's how we had fried chicken for dinner

Betsy loves polenta.  I abhor it.  So this year, when I have been trying to diet pretty religiously (and succeeding, I might add), Betsy has been making one polenta dish after another for dinner, so that I am not "tempted."  Believe me, I am not tempted.   ;D

I hate eclairs.  Why ruin perfectly good chocolate with all that gooey creamy gunk?

I am having a rather amusing "conversation" with some idiot (technical term) over at IMDb, who wants to know why Frances Farmer didn't stop Jean Ratcliffe from spreading lies in "Will There Really Be a Morning?", Frances' purported autobiography which Jean actually wrote.  Well maybe because Frances had been DEAD for two years when the book was released.  (Just a wild guess).   8)

"Your" and "you're" are actually the same problem as with "it's" and "its" with the mix-up over possessives versus contractions. The problem is that with these near-sound alikes, the kids were writing the first word that popped into their heads rather than thinking what the words themselves actually mean. I suspect adults do the same thing when they're writing and in a hurry.

When I taught, those two problems (it's-your) along with students confusing "to-too-two" and the infuriating habit of students making "a lot" into one word ("alot") were the most common spelling errors I experienced at the junior high/middle school level.

I am sure the students had been taught these things in elementary school, and I KNOW for a fact I re-taught them again and again, but it honestly never seemed to burrow itself into their brains, and I'd still have students making those mistakes when they left my room at the end of the year. (But after teaching it a couple of times, I'd start docking points from composition grades to start making them take more serious notice. Still didn't seem to matter to many though I'm sure a few got the point eventually.)

Watching "The High and the Mighty" last night, I found it interesting to hear one of the characters use the phrase "....and get a load of this..."

It reminded me that I had heard this phrase most of my life until probably the last 20 years.

I appreciate the genesis of such phrases as "...a load of bull..." because the imply a large quantity is at hand.

And I'm guessing that "...get a load of XXXX..." might have some similar implications, only I've heard it used when someone was simply referring to a person walking by..."Well!  Get a load of her!"  Generally speaking, of course, it's because "her" was in something slinky, or decked out in too many jewels, or had more than one fella following her around.

All that WWII and post-WWII lingo is fascinating, IMO.

But what would younger folks today make of "...get a load of this..."???

This is very true.  It chagrins me no end to see I've made similar errors after having posted an entry.  Many times, I've modified posts to correct typos, missed letters and errant contractions/possessives.

And I know I've missed a few, too!

The grammatical errors that drive me nuts involve number agreement.

A common misuse:  "A person would be....if 'they' tried to..."  A "person" is singular...and would take a "he" or a "she" (or, on random occasion, an "it").

In Britain, corporate entities are plural in nature.  "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer....they....have....are...."

But in the US, corporate entites are singular:  "AT&T...it....has....is...."  We refer to such things as "collective nouns" requiring singular modifiers.

Misuse is absolutely RAMPANT in the media.

I'm 28 years old - I have a Master's Degree - and I've just learned (finally!) how to properly use "its" and "it's." I know it's silly, but I always got them confused before, so I'd add in apostrophes all willy-nilly when there needn't be any. But I've ALWAYS known the difference between "your" and "you're."

Mr. Sandy Wilson (composer of THE BOY FRIEND) just walked in the office.

I have to admit, and I know it's low-brow and many of you do not agree with me, that Krispy Kreme Donuts are my favorite pastries, if you can call them that. I love them. I also love lemon and berry tarts like we used to have in the old country. And by "old country," I mean England. Their strawberry tarts are to die for. I also could go for a croissant any time of day.

Elmore...your chicken story makes me homesick. ;)

Favorite pastries: I too am a big fan of the Beard Papa cream puffs.  I often find cream puffs to be a big disapointment- they look so good, but then either the cream is tasteless and/or the the pastry itself is unremarkable.  Beard Papa has neither of those problems.  The chocolate ones are amazing.

It occasionally will get into the 100s here in Salem, but thankfully, only for a few days in the summer.

Preferably plucked and gutted, I hope!   :-\

Watching "The High and the Mighty" last night, I found it interesting to hear one of the characters use the phrase "....and get a load of this..."

It reminded me that I had heard this phrase most of my life until probably the last 20 years....

...But what would younger folks today make of "...get a load of this..."???

I'll ask some of the baggers at work when I get a chance.  They're mostly around fifteen/sixteen, and a good resource for information.

Wow - those sound fantastic. I especially liked this part, though:

"You may discover tiny black grains in our custard cream. While tasteless, it is those black grains that create the special aroma."

Don't worry about those tiny black grains...we have an ant problem. They do have a bit of an odor, but at least they're tasteless!

Actually, much as I thought it was funny to watch headless chickens tapdance across the lawn, I thought the plucking and gutting was terrifying.  On my one and only hunting trek, I watched my father gut a rabbit, and that was the end of of that adventure.  I remember one year on my mother's sister's farm, my father and Uncle Harold castrated hundreds of piglets.  That was not a good day, either.

Reminds one of the excesses of the French Revolution.

Mmmmm....Krispy Kremes. You know, for this being one of the largest metropolitan, cosmopolitan areas in the world, I think it's a crime that there are only two Krispy Kreme stores in this city (that I'm aware of, anyway) and they're 55 blocks apart from one another! The one on 72nd Street is quite enjoyable - you can watch them making the donuts - whereas the one in Chelsea is cramped and doesn't have much of a selection. There again, I guess Chelsea boys don't really eat donuts. They smoke cigarettes and eat bark. And that, my friends, is why I am not a Chelsea boy (among other reasons that we won't go into here...)

Oh yes, all those grammatical pitfalls drive me absolutely batty.  Was always a pleasant surprise to see correct usage now and then in my standardized test scoring job.

As Ann will confirm, the one that really gets me is one that does not have to be written to be noticed, but a simple case of using the incorrect word.  It seems to me that the word "fewer" is disappearing from our language, all too often being incorrectly replaced by "less."  For some reason, that error is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.  If an item can be individually counted, then a reduction in amount would be "fewer."  If it's just some conglomerate quantity, then when you lose some you have "less."  Not sure why, but that one drives me absolutely bonkers.

As I said, most of the CDs went out on Saturday morning, so I'm glad to see they got there safely.  Can someone tell me if there was any wear and tear on the priority envelope?  The rest of the orders are going out today.  The pressing plant are pressing the additional 250 copies they shorted me on, and repressing all the ones I had left - and they're doing them in one hour, so everything can still go out.  So, what I will say is, that if anyone absolutely cannot live with their slightly wrinkled booklet, I'll replace it with your next order.

Happily, I've always known the difference between its and it's, although in the heat of writing I sometimes do it wrong by accident, but I always see it and fix it.  Same with your and you're.

The transfer went very fast.  Luckily, the 16 track tape was in perfect shape after all these years.  We thankfully used Scotch brand - had we used Ampex, there most likely wouldn't have been any oxide left and we would have been out of luck.  I think the songs that are on this tape will sound 1000% better than what was on the LP.  Unfortunately, it turned out to be five and not four songs that were on the missing tape, but the bulk of the album will still be all newly remixed, and we'll be able to help the other five tracks with EQ.

I've been watching Lisa Kudrow's new sitcom on HBO called THE COMEBACK. It hasn't garnered very good reviews nor has it done what they were expecting ratings-wise (though HBO isn't JUST about ratings since shows are broadcast multiple times during the week and on multiple platforms of HBO).

Kudrow plays a B-grade sitcom actress named Valerie Cherish who once had a middling (4 year run) sitcom success and is now trying for a second one, but in the new show, she's not the star and actually is barely on the show. THE COMEBACK is chronicling her attempts to stage a return to network TV by a reality crew filming her as she attempts to land this second network success.

So, what we have are two shows in one - The new sitcom this actress is barely on (called ROOM AND BORED) and the reality show that is detailing her everyday life as she tries to return to TV (which is called THE COMEBACK).

It sounds more convoluted than it is, but the show hasn't taken off on HBO, and I think the reason is the character that Kudrow is playing. She lacks common sense to see the disdain that many have for her, and she focuses on the petty often at the expense of the important. Watching the show is a fairly frustrating experience making you feel both pity and exasperation for this fairly dim woman.

On the other hand, the show has its moments and has had just enough of them to keep me tuning in each week. That's more than Kirstie Alley's FAT ACTRESS was able to do. Three episodes of that, and I checked out. I think I will most likely go the distance with THE COMEBACK.

DR Jason, do the musical specialty licensing houses bid for the rights to new titles, or does the production team of the show "give its blessing" to one house over another? Do certain composers have contracts with you which means their shows automatically go to your house, or what? Always wondered how shows go where they go.

Just saw this story on the internet:

<Showtime is restoring and returning to television Liza Minnelli's landmark 1972 TV special "Liza with a 'Z.'"
The special, directed by Bob Fosse, hasn't been seen on TV since its initial broadcast on NBC in September 1972, and few copies of it exist on video. Showtime is working with Minnelli, who owns the rights to the program, and producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Chicago") to restore the 16-millimeter print of the film and digitally remaster "Liza with a 'Z'" for a premiere sometime next year..

It'll be nice to see it again after all these years. Of course, I've had the LP since it was released, but home VCRs weren't around, at least not at my house, when the show first aired. Looking forward to seeing Liza at her peak.

I can't remember if it was the first or the second season, but one of the fired "Apprentice" contestants was being interviewed by Matt Lauer on The Today Show.  She said something about being "casted" on the show for some specific reason and Matt asked her about being "cast" on the show (subtly correcting her) and again, she said "yes, I was casted..." ::)
Title: Re:LIKE A CHICKEN WITH ITS HEAD CUT OFF
Post by: Jason on July 18, 2005, 01:58:54 PM
Matt H: It depends. How's that for an answer? :)

Certain composers tend to stick with who they know. We, for example, handle 90% of Sondheim's stuff and used to handle all of Lloyd Webber's shows before he moved his catalog to Rodgers & Hammerstein. We got WICKED and LOUIE because Stephen Schwartz likes us and we handle 90% of his shows.

Sometimes there's a little wheeling and dealing to get one big title. We got MILLIE because Jeanine Tesori trusts us (and we took VIOLET and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. MTI also funded a healthy chunk of the Cast Recording for CAROLINE so that we could have reference recordings when the show goes into release).  We got RENT because we agreed to take TICK...TICK...BOOM! You get the picture...

Authors who are not currently represented by any of the licensing houses, or those with no scruples and simply are out to make a wad of cash (who could blame them?), are certainly free to bid out their shows to the highest payer. HAIRSPRAY is still up for grabs. The problem with that show is: 1) it's hard to cast so it won't sell as well as something like SEUSSICAL and 2) the authors are asking A LOT of money for the show, so it'd be hard to make the investment back because, well...refer back to #1.

Believe it or not, our boss really wants to pick up GOOD VIBRATIONS because it would sell extremely well. That's why he wants ALL SHOOK UP so badly - it'd sell like hotcakes.

And that's sort of how we obtain properties for licensing...

The TV section of zap2it.com.

And thanks for the detailed info on licensing shows. Having never directed nor worked in administration for a theater group, I have little direct knowledge of these licensing houses.

The "Liza With A Z" info is great news.  I have a VHS tape of the show, but it's a tad fuzzy.

I hope the remastering helps a lot.  I've always thought it extremely odd that this show never got a home video release.

And where are the Streisand TV shows on DVD??????

That's a GREAT question! I have commercial videotapes, but with some remastering, they're bound to look excellent on DVD (though they were originally taped, I believe, rather than filmed).

I just got a near-mint condition window card poster of this show in today's mail (courtesy of E-Bay).  It's gorgeous!

(Am trusting you meant the show Bacall did on Broadway.  If not, never mind).

The TV may have not been all that is should be but it would still be wonderful to have Bacall's performance in the collection of DVDs  - and indeed the show itself.
Yes Ron that's the one - I saw the London stage production in 1973.  It was back in the days when you could order afternoon tea to be brought to your seat at interval. Trays with Tea, fruitcake etc.

I love the Chik-Fil-A billboards here. There is a cow - don't know if I should call it a sculpture of a cow or what to call it, but it's standing there like a painter on the platform painting the message "Eat Chicken" or "Save the Cows" or something like that. It always cracks me up.   Ok, I'm easily amused

Evening folks!

I have to admit that the stories about the chicken killings made me sad.  I know it  had/has to be done but if I had to do it, I don't know if I could ever eat any kind of meat.

I had a big ol' white rooster that I called "Fatty" when I was a kid.  He followed me everywhere.  He even sat on my shoulder.

I will never forget the time the boy down the street hit my arm.  Out of no where you could hear Fatty yell, Coook, Coook.  The next thing I knew,  he flew at that kid until he drove him from the yard.  Dear old Fatty and his wife, Henrietta.

She somehow fell off the truck of a group of chickens headed for that big barnyard in the sky.  Her beak had been trimmed all the way back.  They did that so they could pack more of them into a case and not peck each other eyes out.

They both lived to a ripe old age.

Then there was dear little Blackbird.  Ahhh.  Memories.   :)

I feel exactly the same way.  It's not nice to feel something touch you and you don't know what it is.  Not to mention we have to do the Sting Ray shuffle or risk getting stung.   :'(  That HURTS!

I remember years ago, Cyndi Lauper was on the Arsenio Hall Show (it was that long ago) and she had a grammar quiz for Arsenio.  She had written on a chalkboard a run-on sentence and Arsenio had to correctly punctuate it.  This is the sentence:

Where John had had had Jane had had had had had had had had the teacher's approval.

I think I've posted this before, but can anyone correctly punctuate this and turn it into two complete sentences? ;)

We have a winner!!  But with slightly different punctuation than Cyndi gave.  She made it two separate sentences:

Where John had had "had," Jane had had "had had."  "Had had" had had the teacher's approval.

Thank you, DR ELMORE, for answering my question.
I remember a scene in “Cold Mountain”, Renee Zellweger was doing the same thing as your grandmother did. It was scary for me rather than the way an old woman did with a she-goat in the film.  :-\

Good Evening!

... Just been winding down from the day of auditions.  As I mentioned earlier, we had a very good day.  And it looks like we'll be able to cast a good chunk of local actors too!  -Which also means that I should be able to negotiate for housing for this contract since there won't be so many out-of-towners.

;)

The only "bad" part of the whole day was the weak A/C in the audition room.  -And once those 25 dancers/singers/actors started working up a sweat...Ugh!  It wasn't too bad, but I did find sweat being flung at me from time to time.

But, again, a very good day.

Afterwards, a bunch of us just retired to the green room of the theatre and ordered some Chinese food for delivery.  We just wanted to stay someplace cool for a while - and also to wait out the DC rush hour traffic.  Good food.  Good people.  Great meal.

:)

I just ran out of paper, so I can't finish "The Sunset Tree" until tomorrow.  I did finish "A Gentleman's Gentleman" and the Entr'Acte, so it was a profitable day.

I'm happy to announce the October gathering is generating a lot of travel to the City.  DRJane, I think you should stay through Saturday.  Of course I'm speaking selfishly.

DRJose, when are you back in New York?

Good night, all!

DR Jason et al.... I just searched the archives, and found my "suggested walking and eating tour of NYC" based on my own walking and eating tours I treated myself to while I was there in March with Jewish Thighs On Broadway.   Here it is again for your perusal:

Quote
Although, I'm thinking we should start and end with the wallking tour portion.  We can start at the Westway Diner on 9th for breakfast, or down in the Lower East Side and The Donut Plant, or down in Chelsea Market at Sarabeth's or Amy's Breads, or....

Then we can walk to Magnolia Bakery for a cupcake or two... Then to Chocolate Bar for a truffle or two...  The the Krispy Kreme in the Village... Or John's Pizza... Or Cones for some gelato... or back over to the LES for some fish & chips at A Salt & Battery.  -And, yes, they do serve Scotch Eggs!

Then in the late afternoon, we can check out The Chippery in Chelsea (they make custom batches of potato, sweet potato and/or beet chips to order - great dipping sauces too!)... Then to F&B (Frankfurters & Beignets) for some great "European" street food (and, yes, they have smoked tofu dogs - and fried green beans!)...  And if it's the right day, we can check out the Green Market in Union Square (breads, vegetables, etc.. even wine!)... -And a new Whole Foods just opened across the street...

Or if you want to stroll up Fifth Avenue... There's Maison du Chocolat...  Minamoto Kitchoan for exquisite Japanese sweets...  Or we can do full Japanese tea in the Tea Room at Takashimaya... Perhaps a wine tasting at Morelli...  There are a couple of great falafel and kebab carts long that stretch too.

And then to finish off the day... We can go up 8th Ave... Dinner at Artie's...  Perhaps some dim sum at Ollie's...  A Beard Papa Cream Puff or two (although, I'm going to have to try their Mango Over Shaved Ice dessert sometime next week)... Then up a few more blocks to H&H to stock up on some bagels (unless you want to go to the Hell's Kitchen location)... And Zabar's, of course!

And then there's Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, Long Island, The Bronx...etc., etc., etc...

Oops... I forgot about Williams-Sonoma!

Had a good time re-watching THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT III. However, some of the musical numbers which they tried to repurpose for surround sound were kind of weird sounding. I don't remember the DVD sounding like this when I played it the last time, but I did use a different DVD player. I may try some of the numbers it in tomorrow to see if they still sound a little weird.

DR elmore - I should be back by 4:00 tomorrow, Tuesday, afternoon.

...And then I'm playing auditions Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

...Ah, the smell of desperate actors in the morning at the Equity building..

TOmorrow I've got the DVR set to record THE VERDICT. No, not the Paul Newman courtroom drama (which is a marvelous Sidney Lumet film) but an earlier Warner Bros. whodunit starring Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre, made in the 1940s. I saw it several years ago and really loved it. They always made an entertaining duo on-screen. I hope it holds up to my memory of it.

And I am bound and determined to catch RENO 911! tomorrow, too, instead of scrambling around later in the week trying to find a rerun. The DVR is all set to get it tomorrow night.

We had a huge thunderstorm roll through here around 5:15. It only lasted about 10 minutes, but it rained so hard for that brief time that you couldn't see the other side of the street. After it stopped, I stepped outside, and talk about a sauna! The rain didn't cool anything off. The outside was actually steaming! Argh!

But my sister would throttle me if I did not go camping with them.

...The view into my room from the living room...

-The big door in the middle actually leads right outside, basically giving me my own entrance - and exit - to my room.  Yes, it's very sparse right now.  I have a few things there.  Nick, the guy I'm subletting from, has a few things there.  I'm hoping to prettify things up once I get some time over the weekend.

RE: Krispy Kremes - I believe there are only two Krispy Kreme stand alone stores in the DC area now - at least that I know of.  One out on Rt. 1 in Alexandria, and small one right at the top of the south entrance to the Dupont Circle Metro Station - you can smell them coming up the escalators!

The location on Rt. 1 used to be one of the few "original" locations/buildings.  About two years ago, they tore down the old place, and built one of the new ones - with the "watch them make the donuts" viewing window.  I like it, but I do miss the old place.  The old place used to make all types of Krispy Kremes, not just the "corporate" varieties.  I still miss the Blueberry-Filled ones!

...And that Chocolate Creme-Filled one was indeed pretty tasty!

I am working on my AMAZON review so I can post it when I am allowed, BUT:

SPOILERS AHEAD - Do not READ IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE CD FIRST:

DO NOT READ ANYMORE IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE CD FIRST:

DO NOT READ ANYMORE IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THE CD FIRST:

New Guy In Town - Guy Haines:

Great packaging, great liner notes and photographs.  Song selection a bit more arcane than Haines His Way, the first Guy Haines CD.

All of the songs are well done.  The orchestrations are first rate, and the musicians know their stuff.  The easy-going Haines style is matched perfectly by clever arrangements that are sweet but never cloying.

First two songs are pleasant enough.  "On Your Toes" has the type of lyric that Lorenz Hart was the master of - mix that with a Richard Rodgers tune and you have a toe-tapper that is bound to become a favorite.  Rodgers and Hart will make a brief appearance on another tune on the CD.  Next up "They Don't Give Medals (To Yesterday's Heroes)"  - this song was new to me, but because it was Bacharach and David, it was familiar at the same time.  A good kind of familiar, with that bouncing rhythm and those clever rhymes - so typical of the B/D hits of the late 1960's.

Next track is the first home run of the game.  Haines and Jessica Rush take dePaul and Mercer's "I'm Past My Prime" from LI'L ABNER and make it a delicious duet that has you imagining them in costume!  The lyrics and music are as fresh and perfect as the day they were written!

Next few songs I will cover in MORE detail for AMAZON.

Second home run:  "Love Look Away" from FLOWER DRUM SONG - BK proclaims this song perfection, and I must agree.  It has always been my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein "want" song - and it is a treat to hear it sung by a male singer.  Haines places the intro midway thru the song, instead of at the beginning where I am used to hearing it, but damn if it doesn't work!  More than one tear was shed during this tune.

BK is, I think, a bit too generous to the originator of the next song (one he wrote himself)  in the liner notes , but he acquits himself nicely with it.

Third home run:

"Millions of Men" - a Jones & Schmidt song that I only know from the WHAT IF? DVD.  Haines does it wonderfully and the piano by John Boswell is superb.  Although for now, for me, this song still belongs to Paul Haber, Haines is no slouch in his interpretation - this version will also be definitive.

Rest of the songs to be covered at AMAZON - but wanted to share my first reactions, which of course are MY OPINION ONLY.

It is a CD that has a great pedigree and that lives up to its lofty ambitions. Guy Haines is back with a new CD and Bruce Kimmel is back with a new label.  All's right with the world....at least the world as we know it.

 ;D

Mine arrived today too!  And your description is accurate for mine, as well.  I'm right now listening to the last track on "New Guy In Town" and I think that it's a wonderful CD.  It has a great mix of songs and I especially love "Cowboy Waltz."  The booklet and the artwork is top-notch and the pictures themselves are quite nice.  Guy's hands take a good picture. ;) Sadly, no hidden track.  Oh, well.  You can't have everything.  I'll listen to After the Ball tomorrow at work.  That CD also has some very nice pictures!

I must depart for the next hour.  The second season premiere of "Battlestar Galactica" is about to start and I totally forgot to tape (or even watch) it on Friday.

Just wrote a post and as I was posting it, Adelphia crashed.  Bravo.  It's back and I hope it stays back until the notes.  Happily, I saved the post just before the crash.

I'm back - what a LONG day this has been and I'm exhausted.  Show went great, and I must now write the notes.

Millions of Men is played by John Boswell, not Grant - John also plays Little Red Hat, Sail Away and something else I'm forgetting.  Glad Jrand and George enjoyed it!
