Title: THEY'RE OFF AND RUNNING

Well, you've read the notes, you've gone around the far turn, you're heading into the home stretch, and now it is time for you to post until the horse racing cows come home.

I still play Freecell, Mahjong and spider solitaire on the computer.
I would not bother ever going to a Casino to gamble. I'm just not interested.

Board games: rarely played these days.  As a child I loved "Monoploy" (In Australia we played the London version).  I've also enjoyed games of Clue (Cluedo in OZ) - particularly after a few glasses of wine.  Mrs Spanner in the Greenroom with a Professor!
I've enjoyed Trivial Persuit games too.

I, of course, love Poker.  I also enjoy Gin.  I do occasionally like to play craps.  And I even enjoy the slots every now and then.

Scrabble is still my favorite board game.

I'd respond to the Topic of the day but my housemate's cat is climbing all over me and won't leave me alone.  I think it's time for me to put her down...gently, but deliberately...and go to sleep.  I also am starting to get a headache, and that's not a good thing to get just before I go to sleep.  I don't think that it'll get worse, just linger longer than it'll take for me to get to sleep.  I hate it when that happens. :P

But Phase 10 is a great card game that my family has been playing for several years.  Sorry and Aggravation have been family favorite board game for many years.  Good night, all. :)

I trust your headache was not caused by the sound of Garralous Dino at the piano DR George.

Good morning DR Elmore. I guess you're ready for another darling of a day. I've just interrupted my viewing of Don Bluth's "Thumbelina".  I still have not worked up enough courage for "Babes In Toyland".

Good morning, all, and a special good morning to my only partner-in-crime this morning on HHW, DRTomovoz!   I believe, DRTomovoz, that Mr Toby Bluth is as fixated on the Victor Herbert show as I.  He keeps trying to fix the book and I'm can't get out of the score.

This morning is my last date with the surgeon and the remainder of the day will be occupied with good ol' DARLING OF THE DAY.

DRJose, give me a call about THE GOLDEN APPLE today.  I should be home after noon.

A very quick “Good Morning”.  Sorry I didn’t make it on yesterday.  I hope to do better this week but with the OT at work, I can’t promise.

Have a wonderful day all!

Good morning, Gentlemen.  I see an Elmore and a TomovOZ!

Gotta run!  :) :D ;D :)

Hello, Tom. I just finished reading the end of yesterday's posts.

I will be off in about an hour to see my doctor for an annual physical.

Had a lovely dinner with an old college bud yesterday. We went to a place called Rachel's on 9th Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets. I had a chicken breast with sauteed apple slices and walnuts. For dessert I had a most wonderful Chocolate Mascarpone with Blueberries. Ummm.

On that note I'm off and running to work before I leave for my physical.

Good morning!  I spent all day yesterday gathering stuff (mostly clothes, purses, and a floor lamp) to donate for today's AMVET's pickup, which had to be on our front porch by 7am.  When I put the bags out, the air was already hot and steamy - yuck!  We have heat warnings for today and tomorrow, but should have a break by Wednesday.

Yesterday's project morphed into some (for me) heavy-duty cleaning and furniture rearranging, so I have some sore muscles today.

Later this afternoon, I'm going to a community forum about a new report on the status of women and girls in greater Cincinnati.  It's being held at the Playhouse in the Park, a recent Tony winner for regional theatre.  Haven't been there to a performance for a long time.

Happy Monday Morning, y'all!

TOD:  I am too cheap a person to really get into gambling.  My friends always make fun of me on trips to Atlantic City because I bring only about $100 to play.  But when I do play, I will hit the Poker or Blackjack tables (and sometimes Baccarat, but I'm always disappointed that I do not spot Orson Welles or Robert Wagner playing.)  Mostly, I'll play the slots.  But it's not that much fun anymore, because all the casino slot machines no longer payout in coins--you get a printed ticket of your "credits".  I liked putting in quarters one at a time, checking each to see if it's a Bicentennial quarter, then pulling the lever and watching the wheels spin.  Now all you can do is insert your twenty dollar bill and push the button(a Jamaica reference!)  Feh!

With card games, I like Gin Rummy and a friendly game of Poker.  I never got into Bridge or Hearts.

Board games:  I'm with BK on this one--Scrabble is the best.  I also like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Backgammon and Pictionary.

Kids games:  I like playing Battling Tops, Rock'em, Sock'em Robots, Bop the Beetle, Mouse Trap, Operation, the Game of Life, Battleship and Booby Trap.

I'm too tired to think of games right now.  How about everybody's favorite family fun-- Milton Brothers' "Let's Have Breakfast"?
All the players move their tokens (pancakes, toast, etc.) around the board until they find their breakfast.  They encounter Snap, Crackle and Pop, Tony the Tiger, the Quaker Oats pilgrim, Aunt Jemima and others on their way.  Careful not to get syrup on your bacon. Wacky fun ensues.

More fun games:  Ker-Plunk, Dr. Nim, Tip-It, Feely-Meely, Head of the Class, Stratego and Risk.

When I was a youngen, my best friend Billy had the home version of the original Match Game.  We would play that for hours, usually using dirty words for our answers.  We had each other rolling on the floor.  His mom would occasionally come over to us and ask, "What's so funny?"  We would both say, "Nothing"  as we frantically erased our answer boards.

Whew! Not having my computer at home really sucks!

As DR Elmore3003 mentioned, I had to take my computer in to Best Buy to have them install a new fan and to fix it so that the new DVD drive they installed a few weeks back would work with my Pinnacle Studio 8 software...anyway they said they would call me when it was done...that was Saturday morning...by Sunday morning I decided to call them to see if it was ready to be picked up and I was informed that they had to send it out for repairs as they discovered it had two bent pins...whatever that means. So, I will be without a computer for two weeks!

I am not going to like that!

I'm not much of a gambler, but I have to admit that during my one visit to Las Vegas, I could see how easy it is to get swept up in the excitement of gambling. I gave myself a $20 a day limit each of the three full days I was there, and I stuck to it by spending anything I made the day before plus the $20 maximum I allowed myself. Totally on different slot machines, and I found the nickel slots paid off for me very well. I came home with more money than I spent, so that was fun.

I'm up, I'm up. I've been up for darn near 24 hours now. I didn't get ANY sleep last night, and I still feel sickly, so I called into work today. I have to get rid of whatever this is by Thursday. Sick is not an option on Thursday. And because I know I won't sleep well at the hospital Thursday night, I'm taking Friday off, too. A short week for me! Whoopee!

To make myself feel better, I'm curling up in bed and watching "Mary Poppins" while I sip my iced tea and blow my nose. And blow my nose. And blow my nose. I should probably try to sing a little just to get the gunk off my vocal cords - it seemed to help yesterday.

Games I like to play: I enjoy computer games. In fact, I'll probably play a few today. I particularly enjoy strategy and simulation games like Age of Empires II, Zoo Tycoon and Rollercoaster Tycoon. I'm no good at card games, and not very good at board games, either, though I do love a good game of Trivial Pursuit. And Scrabble's a good time. And I LOVE Yahtzee.

We're getting to Uncle Albert - he loves to laugh, you know - so I'm gonna get back in bed and watch. I'll be back.

Jose: I think tonight's out for me. It probably wouldn't be the best idea for me to go anywhere tonight.

As for board games, Clue is and always will be my favorite. Once I played my first game of it at a neighbor's house, I got my dad to take me immediately to the local Woolworth's so I could buy one to have at home. Oh, how my family got sick of playing Clue.

We've talked before here about how much I liked the old Parker Brothers' game Careers, and naturally their Monopoly was also played, especially when we were at the beach at it was raining outside so we had to find indoor amusement.

Was never a great fan of Sorry! or Risk though I played both more than I probably wanted to.

And as a teen, a friend of mine with a younger brother introduced me to Candy Land. I don't know why, but I just loved it. I play with my best friend's children even today.

Another board game from my youth that I really liked was Disneyland. You had to maneuver through the four areas (I remember Adventureland had this hideous snake ready to pounce on you), but I have not seen this board game in ages. Again, after playing at a friend's birthday party, I got my dad to get it for us, but my memories of it are very vague now.

As for computer games, I play the pinball and Spider Solitaire that comes with Windows and really enjoy those.

I've bought CSI and a couple of Nancy Drew computer mystery games, but never seem to have the time to devote to them. But maybe one of these days, I will.

Good Morning!

A sort of slow morning for me so far.  But I have had my cereal and I started another load of laundry.  I'll be hanging out here for at least two hours - well, until the laundry is done - taking care of e-mails and phone calls, and then I shall venture out for a while.

And I even lined up my first coaching session for this afternoon!  HOO and RAY!

-Oh, and we had thunderstorms here this morning.  Morning storms always throw me off for some reason - I guess I just associate storms with the afternoon and evening hours.

In any case...

I do remember from my first home computer days (when I had an Atari 800XL), I used to play those Infocom text games all the time. They took hours to map out, but were always lots of fun. I remember playing DEADLINE, BALLYHOO, and some gothic mystery where you avoided ghosts in an old mansion as you wandered around in it. I can't remember the name of it, but I still have those boxed up in the storage room. The Atari still worked fine the last time I checked.

Yes, I’m now sold on Mr. Haines’ new CD and here’s my thoughts.  Before you read it, I’d like to say “Please do not care I mixed Mr. Haines with dear BK and dear BK with Mr. Haines in it, as I was soooo heated by the CD and was out of my right when I wrote it." :-[

===========================================================
"New Guy In Town" is a glamourous CD, dear Bruce, and I love it!!!
ALL songs are delightful and your voice is attractive and strong and sweet. Especially in Second Avenue you are restful to my mind, and also romantic (you know I like this word, romantic!?)
Powerful Bruce in Born Too Late,  you seem to me to be on the verge of  bursting(exploding)  at the ending of it,  >_<
And finally..... the RAIN! What a dramatic and refined execution you took!  I really, really, really LOVE the sound of the rain for the ending of the CD. (I wonder why you knew that I love raining sound hearing from the radio/CDs)
I, unfortunately, don't know any special knowledge of recordings so can't explain my impression on the CD technically.
But I can say this... New Guy In Town made my Sunday afternoon so gorgeous, Thank you, dear Bruce.
Say thanks to Mr. Guy Haines!

The end

As for Board Games-
Parcheesi
The Bermuda Triangle - You moved this "cloud" over the board, and hoped that your pieces were not "lost" in the Bermuda Triangle (courtesy of some "hidden" magnets).
Monopoly - Did anyone ever play by the rules?  The real rules?  ;)
Scrabble - We had so many sets of this one growing up.  It was always fun combining the tiles from other sets in order to make the word possibilities, well, more possible.  ???  Of course, there would inevitably be those times were you ended up with a slate full of just vowels or consonants.
Titanic - Another "disaster" game.  There was this "boat" that would tilt/sink, and you had to get your people off the boat before it sank.

I never really played Clue - or Cluedo - growing up.  Don't know why I didn't, I just didn't.

Other games - Battleship - Oooh, I remember when the electronic version came out with the sound effects!!!
Jenga
Connect Four
...And, of course, Operation.

:)

DR JANE; As to Oregon Prunes, I could get just a name, Bruce Elliott from Elliott Farm in Oregon. Since I couldn’t find their (the importers and the farm) site or any addresses/numbers to get in touch with, I asked a person from a market in which I got the prunes and finally he gave me the name.  Sorry not give enough information to you.

As for computer games, I've never really been into them.  If I do play any game on the computer regularly, it's Solitaire.

And, surprisingly, I don't seem to have the hand-to-eye coordination for things like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, etc.  And then when it comes to Nintendo, Playstation, etc... fuhgettaboutit!

The thing about The Bad News Bears that is so specious, is that not only did they attempt to remake a perfect film, they stole its ad campaign, too, which is, I think, a first.

elmore, you do know that Toby Bluth and his brother Don play important roles in Kritzer Time, don't you?  In the book, they are the Beach Brothers who run the theater in Culver City where Benjamin does shows.  I saw Toby not that long ago.

I agree about nickel slot machines.  I once won $37 on one nickel in Vegas, and got hooked on them.  Atlantic City just doesn't cut it for me in terms of gambling, because the nickel slots are so few and far between.  But in Vegas, even the nicest casinos have lots of nickel machines.   I guess they go for volume, even in the most luxurious hotels.

The hotel I stayed at the last time even had penny machines, but on those you had to insert vouchers rather than actual pennies.  Without the kerplunk of the coin, it just wasn't as interesting.

I will be sitting with Ms. Laurie Mitchell at the Ray Court's Hollywood show this weekend...and at the table next to us will be Shirley Jones and Marty Ingels!

I won't tell Ms. Jones that I had a hard time sitting through CAROUSEL this weekend....for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I will have better luck with OKLAHOMA....I love Gordon MacRea and he has a fantastic voice (and he ain't bad to look at!), but Shirley Jones has never really been a favorite performer, which is probably why I had not ever seen CAROUSEL or OKLAHOMA before.

I did, however, enjoy the dance number to JUNE IS BUSTIN OUT ALL OVER...it made me nervous seeing those gals dancing on the roof!

Well, dinner's in the crockpot (cranberry country-style ribs, which we'll have with corn on the cob), dessert is in the fridge (blueberry pie), and I'm off to Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park to find out all about the status of women in the tristate (SW Ohio, SE Indiana, N Kentucky).

Oh, TOD:  Not much of a gambler myself, but earlier this month my mom took $140 to a casino riverboat in Illinois and left with $600 (playing slots).

I liked playing canasta (with my grandma) and a rummy called "Liverpool" on our screened porch on hot summer evenings in Detroit in the '60's.

Board games - Careers (stars, hearts, and dollars), Go to the Head of the Class, and Barbie-Queen of the Prom.  I still have all those.  We were invited to a couples' gathering to play Trivial Pursuit when it first became available and one of the husbands (an accountant) said, "I'm never playing this with a reference librarian again!"

As DR Jose would say, "Laters!"

I'm not much of a gambler:  In Vegas, I like the restaurants and I occasionally will drop some money in the slots.  If I lose more than twenty, I quit.

I'll ocassionally play poker, but I hate all the elaborate games.  I like 5-7 card stud or draw.  Maybe one wild card.

Board games:  I love Scrabble, Boggle, Trivial Pursuit. I like the old versions of the games...the regular Genus version, Silver Screen, the Baby Boomer Edition, and one that is about the Twenties up to the Fifties...can't remember the name.

I haven't played Clue in years.  We have a couple of Board games that are based on the popular parlour game like Dictionary.  But we like just the regular old version.  We also have a variation we play where we take a film book like Leonard Maltin's.  A description or log line is read of a movie and then everyone has to write out a title for the movie and everybody guesses on which is the real title.  Many just blow it off and write hysterically funy titles.  We use two such titles for the name of the game:  California Screaming...the description was about homicidal surfers.  And Mary Poplar...about supernatural trees.

Evening all!  What wonderful news to come home to—DR Elmore has a clean bill of health!  Hoo and Ray!

As for the games, I’ve never been much of gambler.  I confess I do spend two dollars a week on the lotto.  It started on my birthday and I’ve played the same numbers this whole time.  I keep hoping that my numbers will come up someday.

I’ve never been to Los Vegas and don’t really have any real longing to do so.  Unless they get a show there that I would really like to see or someone **special** was playing there.  The gambling angle holds zero interest to me.

Since I was an only child, I almost never had anyone to play board games with me so I played against myself many, many a time.  Clue, Bats in the Belfry, The Mummys Curse (or was it Tomb?) Mouse Trap, Life, Mystery Date are the ones that come to mind.

I could get my Mom to play Rummy with me from time to time but  I’ve never played Poker or Hearts or Gin or Cribbage.  I wouldn’t mind learning them.

Computer games are fun and you don’t need anyone to play them with!  The computer is always a willing opponent and I wish I had one when I was growing up.  It taught me how to play chess.

I also enjoy Mahjong, a puzzle program (don’t have to worry about losing any pieces) and many of the role playing games.  I’m not much on the shoot’em ups.

Meant to tell you all that I got that new Vonage router but haven’t had time to hook it up.  If it works the way they say it should, I can call anywhere in the US of A and it won’t cost me a penny more then the $24.99 a month fee.  That’s as much as I pay for local phone service only now.

Well, that's all the news that is news around here.  Have a good evening all!

Yes, if there had been computers growing up, I wouldn't have had to constantly pester my family to play board games with me. You couldn't play Clue with one or even two people, so having the computer play the other players has been a godsend.

I learned to play Bridge via the computer. I always wanted to learn how, but my mom just didn't have the patience to teach me. After I learned how, I used to beg her to find a fourth and for us to play, but my parents died before I ever got to play bridge either with them or against them.

DRs MBarnum, Ben, and others who asked about March of the Penguins - it's very informative and full of amazing photgraphy, but is, at best, a glorified National Geographic special.  No, DR MBarnum, I think a 3 year old would be bored, bored, bored.

I thank you, one and all, for your kind wishes; it's about a year ago this week the whole megillah began, one year out of whatever time I have left, and I am still a bit angry about it.  You newer DRs may not be aware of how important this site and its readers were to me last year during the depression and anxiety I went through before the problems were diagnosed and corrected.  I'm grateful to all of you for helping me through this, especially Mr Guy Haines whose "Haines His Way" was guaranteed to cheer me on the gloomiest days, and I'll still be saying this the day my critics nail me into my coffin.  Thank you, fellow acolytes.

Now, on a less serious note (I'm in G today), I'm almost finished with DARLING OF THE DAY!  Tomorrow should do it.  The Chicago Humanities Festival and Harold Arlen are already pounding my door for November deadlines.  It's good to have work.

I've never seen a Tony® Award in person, but when I was in college, I was in the jazz choir, conducted by Chuck Israels.  He invited Diane Schuur, who lived in Renton at the time, to come up to Bellingham and sing with the jazz band.  She didn't sing with the jazz choir, so I didn't get to sing with her.  Anyway, I and Todd, another member of the jazz choir, drove down to Renton and drove her (she, being blind) and her boyfriend Paulie back to Bellingham.  She gave us a little tour of her apartment and showed us clips of her upcoming (and not yet released) concert video with the Count Basie Orchestra.  She also showed us her Grammy® Award.  I got to hold it! ;D

I've been a wee bit disappointed in a couple of defectors, especially former dear readers Jay and Dan-in-Toronto, both of whom should know better, if you want my opinion.  I do hope they're both doing well, though, and should they ever return I can guarantee them a bitch-slapping they will never forget.

But, for every defector, we get new, wonderful people in addition to the old, wonderful people we've already got.  How great is it that we've got a Frenchman (from France), a beautiful Japanese lady (from Japan), two count them two Ozzies (from Oz), and folks from all over these here United States of America.  We are GLOBAL, baby, GLOBAL!

I'm signing off for the evening, dear friends.

BK, best of luck with your reading tonight.  I feel it will go well.  I am enjoying Mr Haines' new album, and I think my favorite track is "I'm Past My Prime," but I don't feel ready to talk about it confidently.  My thoughts are on my deadline.

Regards to one and all!

"breaking of legs": We may have discussed it before but superstitions might be worth a topic.
My father used to always say that new shoes on the table would result in an argument in the house.  It usually did too - about putting shoes on the table. I think I'm now in "Blood Brothers" territory - a place I usually avoid.

I just read this morning that the remake of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE that I was complaining about last week is actually being made for NBC-TV, so it's not a theatrical release. Glad to know that.

After the conversation last week about THE TOWERING INFERNO, I looked through my bookcases until I found my copy of THE GLASS INFERNO.  It is now on my nightstand, and I will read it again, as soon as I finish HARRY POTTER.  Unfortunately, I couldn't locate THE TOWER, but it wasn't one of my favorite books anyway.

I got to hold it! ;D

When Colleen Dewhust came to Tacoma back in 1979 (her son attended the University of Puget Sound), I had the great honor of not only being her dinner escort for the evening, but she also asked me if I would drive her to the airport the next day.  During her visit, she was staying with the parents of her very close friend, Broadway producer Ken Marsolais, who lived north of Tacoma.  When I got to the Marsolais' home to take her to the airport, Collen was still packing her things.  While we all chatted, and Colleen packed, I strolled around the Marsolais' living room looking at some of the momentos they had on display.  Suddenly, I noticed on one of their bookcases was this very large medallion, mounted on a black pedestal with a cuved armature.  WOW........... I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT.  All I could do was to stand there, IN SHOCK, wondering what the Hell the Marsolais were doing with a Gong Show trophy in their living room!

And that was the first time I saw the actual Tony Award for "Best Play" for THE SHADOW BOX.

This is not the first time that there has been two competing films on the same book or theme. Usually TV works quicker Can't think of any example but remember that all major networks I believe did an Amy Fisher movie.

Just thought of one.
Two TV movies and one theatrical version vied to be the first one.  They were Victory at Entebee, Raid on Entebee, & Operation Thunderbolt.

Victory was first  out. They shot it on videotape, next came Raid which was shown a month later and then came Operation which was shot in Israel with cooperation of the government and militaryh

I get the oddest e-mails sometimes, via this site.  Apparently, I've become The Answer Man.  I guess they get her by googling various topics, but today's e-mail was really strange - a lady in Canada wanted to know where she could find the poem of Dangerous Dan McGrew, which her dad used to recite to her all the time.

Of course, the poem itself is called The Shooting of Dan McGrew, but one little "dangerous dan mcgrew" via google got me to the poem, which I cut and pasted into an e-mail response.

Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford) recited it as her audition piece in MURDER MOST FOUL.  :D

Spent time watching a good portion of SUPERMAN tonight. I don't know if it's the film or the transfer, but none of the Krypton or Smallville scenes is particularly sharp or in good focus. Perhaps they were done that way originally (I saw SUPERMAN in the theater, but I have no memory of the photography). It really isn't until we get to the Daily Planet/Metropolis that the transfer starts to look sharp.

The sound is terrific with lots of widesspread effects and nice bass.

This is one LONG movie.

You're right; there have been others. There were two Robin Hood films made simultaneously. The one with Kevin Costner was a big hit despite murderous reviews, while the one with Patrick Bergin was shown in the US on TV rather than in the theaters. It didn't do particuarly well in the ratings as I recall.

Back to SUPERMAN a second. It was pretty sobering to watch the young, virile Christopher Reeve in this knowing how cruel fate would be to him later. I found it hard to keep those thoughts out of my mind as I watched all 6'4", 225 pounds of him flying across the screen.

My audition seemed to go fairly well.  I don't often do the nerves thing, but they kicked up a bit.  Not horrendously so, though, so no real worries there.  It was very nice to see that the director was genuinely glad to see me auditioning for the show, along with the producer.  A little ego stroke now and then is a nice thing.

After futzing around here at the apartment for a while, I finally made my way down to Chelsea.  To 23rd Street.  To Home Depot.  I wanted to check out air conditioners.  I had checked them out online, but wanted to see what they actually had in store.  Plus, I just really had to see if there was really a Home Depot in New York City.

Well... Yes, Virginia, there is a Home Depot in New York City.  -In fact, there are three of them.

Being in The City, it was not your typical Home Depot.  None of that big warehouse look.  No towering shelves of merchandise.  No endless aisles to walk down.  Not even the poured concrete floor.  Heck, this one even has escalators!

In any case, I ended up scouting out the model I had seen online.  I just needed the smallest one since I have a small room.  $83.97.  Not bad.

Well...

I headed back out onto the street since I still needed to get some lunch before I had my coaching session.  I was hoping to head back to this great little crepe place right near Union Square Park.  We ate there a lot during the Children of Eden rehearsals last year.  Well, the store front was still there, but it was now a Korean place.  So, I had Korean food for lunch - bimbimbop.  Very good, and the kimchi was hot and spicy without being incendiary.

Well...

Since I had a little bit of time, and it was too hot(?) outside, I decided to walk up and over the 11 or so blocks instead of hoping on the subway.  On the way over I passed Old Navy - where I ended up buying some khaki shorts and a belt.  Then I headed up to Ripley-Grier for my coaching session...

The coaching session was fun.

The studios were busy-busy today - there was a casting call for The Woman In White going on.  I ran into a bunch of people, and it was fun getting some of the updates (i.e. gossip).  In any case...

A former student of mine was just looking for someone to run some music with, someone to play piano.  I ran into at the Damn Yankees call.  He has an audition for an agent tomorrow, and just wanted to make sure he was still singing his stuff correctly.

He actually sort of surprised me with his "book" - quite a nice selection of materials, different styles, different tempos.  Alas, he's been using the same stuff for the past four or five years, and we'll be working again to help him find some new stuff.  But that will be later.

For now, he just wanted to sing through some of his music with a pianist.  It was fun playing and listening to him.  His voice has really come a long way since graduating.  I made comments when necessary, but didn't give too much advice since I didn't want to overload his head with too many things before tomorrow.

The only time I struggled was when he wanted to sing through "King of the World" from Songs for a New World.  That song is just plain hard, hard, hard to play!  It's one of the songs I keep in my "practice" book - and I guess I need to practice it again.  I was actually getting a little self-conscious while playing through it - I was thinking of anyone who might be outside the studio listening to me.  But I made it through, and Jerrold actually apologized for putting me through it.

;)

Well...

Since I had just got paid, and since it was only 5:00, I went ahead and headed back to Home Depot...
Title: Re:THEY'RE OFF AND RUNNING
Post by: JoseSPiano on July 25, 2005, 10:46:44 PM
I entered Home Depot shortly after 5:00.  I was in the self-checkout line by 5:08.  And I headed for the F Train - big box in hand, by 5:15.  -And I was back at the apartment by 5:45.  -Gotta love those Express trains.

I had toyed with getting the box rigged up so that I could carry it with a handle, but then realized that carrying an air conditioner - even a small one - with one hand was going to be harder than carrying it with two.  Thankfully, I just had to walk down to the corner to grab the F, and the train was coming into the station just as I hit the turnstile.  Great timing.  And then I transferred to the B at Time Square, and took that to 145th.

I got it set up in my window by 6:30.  But when I went to turn it on, it did not work.  Hmm... So I plugged something else into the wall jack - which looks like it was put there to handle an A/C unit.  The something else did not work either.  I checked the fuse box and everything looked fine.  Hmmm...

Do I move it to the other window?  NO!

Thankfully, I remembered I had brought along a heavy duty multi-plug thingy - can't think of the proper name right now.  Oh, electric strip - ???  In any case...  I plugged that in, then turned the power on.... and... The hum started!

Whew!  -If I had to carry that thing back down to Home Depot...  Well, I probably would have just splurged on a cab then.  ;)

So, as I'm posting this post, I'm sitting in my newly climately controlled room.  Ah...

:)

OH!

And I went to that Understudies concert tonight too at the Ars Nova Theatre.  Fun, Fun, Fun!

DR Jason's pal, Joe, ended up accompanying me.  And a fine looking "accompaniment" he is.  :)

Seth Rudetsky was the host and pianist for the evening.  A very funny man, and a very good pianist too.  This was the third or fourth "Understudies" cabaret evening he's put together.  Basically, he features the understudies - give them a chance to sing their big song in the show.  Some of the understudies have gone on already, some are still waiting in the wings.

The evening opened with a very funny video presentation done by the understudies from Spelling Bee.  Lots of fun.  Very "Waiting for Guffman"-ish.  And then the Understudies took the spotlight.

They had Sara Ramirez's understudy from Spamalot.  Cheyenne Jackson's understudy from All Shook Up.  Etc., etc., etc.

A very fun evening, filled with some great performances - and LOTS of laughs.  I was particularly impressed with David Burnham who is Matthew Morrison's understudy in Piazza.  He sang his "aria" - truly beautiful.  *And he noted that he actually sings the song a step higher than Mr. Morrison too.

Another highlight of the evening was Seth Rudetsky's analyzation of Patti LuPone's Evita vs. Madonna's Evita.  Truly hilarious - and just too hard to explain here.  You truly had to be there.

Then afterwards, we headed down to Splash in The Village to meet up with some friends.  Splash - or more properly Splash Bar New York (SBNY) - is another "special interest establishment".  It was Musical Madness Monday - lots of video clips from the Tony awards and classic film musicals.  Lots of singing along!

...And on the way to the subway, I noticed a street vendor selling cream puffs.  The name of the business: Choux Factory.  :)  We both got chocolate.  Pretty good, but not as good as Beard Papa.  -Although, keeping pastry shells as crisp as they can be in this humidity is next to impossible, so...  Again, very good.  But now I want a Beard Papa one.  Apparently, they have a storefront in the city - I shall have to investigate further.

I actually think the Patrick Bergin/Uma Thurman is a very interesting Robin Hood and probably better than the Costner.  but, of course, not as good as the Flynn.

Back from BK's play reading of DECEIT which is quite a nifty little theatrical diversion and something we haven't seen in the theatre for a good while.   Enjoyed it a lot.  After a dinner with BK, Tammy Minoff, and Tammy's mom.
