THE BUNNY HOP

Well, you've read the notes, you've egged the notes, you're hunting for gaily colored Easter eggs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be directly after they're finished attending the Easter sunrise service.

In the musical, A Year With Frog and Toad (I don't know about the original books), they say that bananas are the funniest fruit.  I've always thought that kumquats were...well, at least the funniest name. ;)

Is Ann eating a KUMQUAT?!

...Ah, "Beautiful"... which I think is truly one of the most beautiful moments in the show...

Well, I'm probably gonna turn off the TV/DVD after Act 1 is finished, so...

It was great seeing my friends, Jennifer and Mark, at the show today.  Jennifer came to the matinee, and Mark came to the evening show.  They're husband and wife, so they took turns watching their kids.  :)

After the matinee, Jennifer and I walked down to the Cupcake Cafe for a snack.  I tried one of their Walnut Cupcakes with Maple Icing today for the first time.  It definitely won't be my last!  Soooo good.  -And they really do do a nice job decorating all the cupcakes with buttercream flowers.  Then I walked Jenn over to the Ferry, and headed back towards Penn Station...

Whilst chomping on a Spicy Beef Jamaican Pattie in Penn Station - I went there to pick up my train ticket for tomorrow - I heard a "Jose?!?!"  I turned around, and there was one of my former students from Catholic University!  "Hewwwoo Sswoott!"  -I was still chomping away... ;) Another too brief, mini-reunion, but a good reunion nonetheless.  And he's a "working actor". YEAH!

After tonight's show, Mark and I headed over to Rachel's on 9th Avenue for a post-show bite to eat.  He had their Tomato-Leek-Smoked Bacon soup and the always delicious, Rachel Burger.  I had the Chopped Salad and the Grilled Calamari special.  Everything was very good.  Oh, and we split the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie for dessert - it's basically an oversized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, but with nothing artificial in it.  Pure, total richness!

I then had a call from my friend, Max... We'll catch up again later in person too.  Then I headed over to Sin Sin on the Lower East Side.

What a place!!  And I had no idea the Lower East Side was so hip and happenin' late night!  Lots of people and car traffic, and it was already close to midnight.  Sin Sin was fun - a bit loud and warm - but fun.  I didn't stay too long, but I did get a chat in with my friend, Shannon, the birthday girl.  And another old friend of mine, Billy, was there too.

Billy and I ended up leaving at the same time, so we walked over to Broadway to catch the A back uptown.  On the walk uptown, we caught up on each other's lives.  He got off at 42nd Street...

On the rest of the ride back uptown, I was treated to some impromptu entertainment on the train.  A group of young men started a sort of challenge "dance" - more or less footwork.  Their friends starting beating out rhythms, and beat-boxing and rapping.  Then two guys started "trading fours" of fancy moves and footwork...

And then I was at 168th...  And now I'm here... And now "It's How Up Here" has started... and something tells me I'll be watching the rest of Sunday in the Park with George tonight... And probably crying like I always do when I watch this show...

But it will be a good cry.  It always is.

As a jam or jelly, yes.

From World Wide Gourmet:

Quote
Description
The fruit of a tree related to the mandarin, having small, narrow, pointed leaves, and grown for its small fruit

Grown in Africa, Asia, America as well as Brazil, the kumquat's flesh as well as its skin can be eaten. Its colour ranges from orange to orangey-red. It is the smallest variety of the citrus family. Its flesh divides into 3 or 5 segments; it has little juice and contains large seeds for its size.

Cooking tips

Macerated in rum

Excellent for mousses, sorbets and jams

Hints - sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent blackening if you use them in salad

If you eat it raw, cut in half and press each half in your hand to combine the kumquat's two textures Kumquat and mango jam, flavoured with Rivesaltes muscat

Grand Marnier soufflé, kumquat coulis and white chocolate shavings

Spread a slice of gingerbread with kumquat purée to accompany foie gras

Grilled duck breast with turnip and kumquats, with a sweet lime leaf sauce

der Brucer (glad, at last, to know what to put on gingerbread to go with my foie gras)

Hmm.... KUMQUAT!!!

-I like Kumquats.  Talk about a sour fruit!  But totally delish when combined with other ingredients.  My piano teacher in college would make a Kumquat Chutney.  It was a perfect accompaniment to Grilled Pork - or poured over some Vanilla Ice Cream!

OHH!!!...  Just popping back in for a second...

If you're using AOL...  DO NOT respond to any e-mail that comes from "billinginvoices@aol.com".   It's another scam.  I just received one claiming that my credit card had been declined - and since it is the time of the month when I am billed...

Thankfully, I was able to use AOL's Live Billing Help to clear up the matter.

I had thought the e-mail was suspicious since it came from an "@aol.com" address. But remember any e-mail from within AOL will NOT have the "@aol.com" as part of it's address.  And any official e-mails from AOL are also supposed to have a special Blue mail icon.

That's all for now...

And, once again, Goodnight.

*Depending how rushed in the morning, I may not be logging until I get back to Richmond tomorrow night...  If that turns out to be the case, HAPPY EASTER!

-Oh, and my grade school had great Easter Egg hunts.  Thinking back, I can't imagine what the candy/treat budget was for those hunts.  Each grade got to go on their own hunt in the little park area at the front of the school.  And there was always plenty of goodies to be found.  And if you happened to find these special, hollow ceramic eggs, it meant you got an even bigger treat!  -And I think I still have a yellow ceramic egg from fourth grade!

-And my piano teacher in college would let each of her students select one of the pysanky eggs out of the basket on her desk in the studio.  She would work on the eggs throughout the year.  And they were still "full" - not blown out.  Some amazingly intricate designs and pictures.  Always at least four colors of dye on each egg.  I still have a few of those too - the insides just eventually dry out over time, years. They become quite delicate. -Of course, if you happen to break one somewhere along the line... P-U!

OK...

'Nighters...

Happy Easter, fellow Dear Readers. In a minute, I'll be off to the sunrise service.

I never ate one, but a Hungarian woman once stuffed kumquats in my pockets.

DR Matt Hough said yesterday

I watched the Gene Tierney Biography on the LAURA DVD. I was surprised there was no mention that what happened to her and her first child was the basis for the plot of Agatha Christie's THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I mean, it's not just suggested by the circumstances of her situation, it is a direct steal with only the names changed to protect the innocent.

So did Gene Tierney murder the person who gave her measals?

Easter Bonnet by Irving Berlin

In your easter bonnet,
with all the frills upon it,
You’ll be the grandest lady in the easter parade.
I’ll be all in clover and when they look you over,
I’ll be the proudest fellow in the easter parade.
On the avenue, fifth avenue,
 the photographers will snap us,
And you’ll find that you’re in the rotogravure.
Oh, I could write a sonnet
 about your easter bonnet,
And of the girl I’m taking to the easter parade.

I always wonder why Irving Berlin who was Jewish wrote about Christian Holidays (Christmas and Easter)

I guess it is hard to find something that rhymes with Yom Kippur and make it a jolly song.

DR MS - Ms. Tierney writers in her autobiography:

Many years later, at a party I was introduced to a woman a few years older than I.  She shook my hand and said we had met before.  I didn't remember.  The woman told me she had been in the WACS and that she had broken a measles quarantine to meet me because "You were my favorite movie star."  I was stunned, why should I tell her the heartbreak and pain she had caused me?  And since that day I have never cared to be anyone's "favorite movie star."

"Kumquat" is one of the key comedy words in W.C. Fields' masterful IT'S A GIFT, my favorite movie of his.

Since I am not expected at my friends' house for Easter dinner until 3 p.m., I have been thinking about which DVD to watch in the early afternoon. It will probably be EASTER PARADE since when I watched it from the DVD boxed set, I knew the sound was mono and having heard THAT soundtrack dozens of times on the laserdisc, I listened to the John Fricke/Ava Astaire commentary track instead while watching.

I noticed in the TV magazine in today's newspaper that there will be a Laurel and Hardy marathon on TCM on Friday this week. For those who have never seen a L&H film, or for those like me who have seen only a couple, there are a whole slate of choices all day Friday from which to pick.

That corner building is under renovation and the angel has been put there just as a display, for feasting passers’ eyes.
