I just watched the Royal Ballet perform Frederick Ashton's wonderful setting of Elgar's glorious Enigma Variations. Ashton's comic masterpiece La Fille mal Gardee is my favorite contemporary ballet and his Enigma Variations set in an Edwardian garden where Elgar, his wife, and friends have gathered seem a more serious counterpart. The variations reflect the music's character, and the famous Nimrod variation, dedicated to Jaeger, Elgar's best friend, becomes a beautiful tearjerker pas de trois between Jaegar and the Elgar's. I cannot believe this ballet has never been released pn dvd before.
