Finishing my workday in the telephone reference center.  The temps are warming up outside, snow changing to rain, roads only slushy.

Was that Red Skelton?  Oy.

RED SKELTON used "Holiday for Strings." David Rose was his musical director on the show.

Re:  Lost.  Is this now-halved 8 episode run the result of the writers' strike?   That doesn't seem logical as they've been working on the series lo these many months it's been off the air, haven't they?

No, since the producers knew that the show wasn't coming back until February of 2008, they spent the extra time on preproduction and were only eight completed shows into their next season when the strike hit. From the bonus features in the DVD set, I'm sure you saw that at any given time, they're working on multiple episodes of the series at the same time, but the completion of some of those episodes used to come dangerously close to air date.

We finally got some rain around noon, and it's been drizzling off and on all afternoon. Very gray and bleak right now, but it IS December!

I have spent all afternoon with the Blu-ray edition of LOST. Yes, it's as spectacular as I imagined it would be. The show is broadcast in HD on ABC in 720p, but these Blu-rays are encoded at the higher resolution 1080p, so they're technically superior to the network broadcast (also with much less compression than is used by cable and dish companies transmitting signals). And the sound is uncompressed 5.1, so it's much more sonically imposing. In short, the best TV series I've ever seen on a recorded medium. I still have a few episodes left to watch and the bonus features, some of which were not on the sDVD set.

And I got the two disc director's cut of ZODIAC today on DVD. Since I never saw the theatrical version at a theater or on DVD, this will be a new experience, too. I won't get to it for about a week. It doesn't come out until January 8th.

Back from running errands (buying dog food). I could see dark clouds moving in so Bosco and I took our walk and he is now snoozing on the rug in front of the front door. I will soon be snoozing on the couch, or watching Mark Damon and Luana Anders in THE YOUNG RACERS.

Oh, and I had a delightful telephone call this morning from one of my past interviewees...an beautiful starlet (who shall remain nameless)... she told me some wonderfully fun things, admitting to me that her late husband, who she was married to for 56 years, cheated on her throughout their entire life together.

She also admitted to me that she had a one time fling with Rory Calhoun...I think that was the first time I ever said to someone "You go, girl!" We both laughed!

Re Danny Kaye

I remember a really funny bit in a film; the scene was set in a large elegant drawing room with a large ceramic platter balanced on  a ledge over a doorway; when the band hit certain rhythms, the plate would start to walk across the ledge; the villain entered and stood under the doorway and Kaye proceeded to try and get the plate to fall and KO the baddie.

On the Riviera perhaps?

There were two KCET (PBS, LA) specials called Musical Comedy Tonight (1979) and Musical Comedy Tonight II (1981) which were hosted (and scripted) by Sylvia Fine.

The later had Danny doing bits from Lady in the Dark.

They must have re-run the later because I think I saw it with Woody.

They actually did three of these specials. I have the first one (the best one) taped off PBS somewhere in my archives, but the last time I looked for it, I found I had returned the tape to the wrong box, and I didn't take the time then to find it.

The temps are warming up outside

When I managed a temporary service, I always tried to keep the temps outside, too.  ;)

Rory's daughter Lori lived in PDX for a long time, did you know that MB?  She was in a band called Nimble Darts, IIRC, which was being hyped as the next Quarterflash, which still makes me LOL.
