Bernstein as a conductor of this score isn't at all in the league of Samuel Krachmalnick, and he thinks it's a "serious" composition.  On the positive side:
   1.  the musical parodies are back in the countries they should be in
   2.  the orchestra is wonderful
   3.  it's the fullest version of an amazing score
   4.  Bernstein disliked the 1973 and City Opera versions

Back from dinner - crab cakes on angel hair pasta.  People from all over Ohio are beginning to descend on Tiffin - 2 vans were unloading when we came back to the hotel.

Tiffin, Ohio? Who'da thunk it?

I thought Purlie WAS a musical!

DR Ginny, I went to the funniest thing today. We celebrated National Library Week in the Magistrate Judge's jury room. It was just a few court personnel and others who happened to be in the federal building.   I don't quite get why they did it. It was just a couple quizzes to win treats and cookies and lemonade.

How embarrassing - with this AAUW state conference on my mind, I totally forgot to wish everyone:

Happy National Library Week!

DR Cillaliz - is the judge a library board member?

Paul Peterson, Eddie Hodges, and John Davidson in a movie, and we were supposed to notice Tommy Steele?

Of COURSE!

I thought Purlie WAS a musical!

But it was never made into a film: the play PURLIE VICTORIOUS, on which it's based, was filmed.

Most Ohioans in my hometown would think crab cakes something for lice.

LOL!

The person I was with is from Maryland and I think she was appalled.  They weren't the best crab cakes I've ever eaten.  Sort of reminded me of the absurdity of eating at Red Lobster in Kearney, Nebraska, which DH Richard, DS Rob, and I did several years ago.  As far from an ocean as you can get in the US, probably.

Oh, OK---I thought I was looking for a logo for something that wasn't a musical.

Where's my parting gift?

Bretty---love the puzzles!

Go to Musso and Frank's. It's not the best food in town but the atmosphere and people watching can't be beat! Very "old school".

Time to leave my second job, if the producer is finished pillaging my itunes, and find some dinner with DH.

Bretty! How can you NOT know about Musso and Frank's? I don't even live in LA and I've been there! It's legendary!

Well, first of all, like so many in L.A., I'm not really a native. I came from "back East." Since living here, I've spent most of my time in a two-mile radius. And, let's face it, some of the most famous restaurants in the world are actually much closer to me -- Matsuhisa, Michael's, Spago, Morton's, etc.

The real issue, though, is that I'm very much a "bottom feeder." I don't really go in for all that fancy stuff; I'm a Big Mac and fries guy. I've got zero taste -- I've never even been to any museums in the area (my idea of a great artist is Jim Warren). Beginning to get the picture?

TOD: Favorite French food: Creme Brulee

Favorite meal: Fresh goat cheese salad in Provence after a cool dip in a pool on a very hot day.

Or my little French boy's Duck Confit. He's coming to town in two days...wonder if I could convince him to cook?

Brett, if you really enjoy musicals, you must get a hold of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X**, music and lyrics by BK (and featuring a knockout performance by Cason); and THE LAST STARFIGHTER with book by FJL and music an lyrics by Skip Kennon.

Both CDs are available at Kritzerland.com

TOD - my favorite "French" meal was the first gathering of a potluck dinner group that formed among some of my best friends in graduate school.  We decided that we'd pick a different country each time and each person would prepare one course.  I don't remember anything about what we ate, but I do remember it as one of my first "grown-up" social gatherings.  And I'm looking forward to visiting with that evening's hostess when we're both in Washington, DC, in June for ALA.

Will do. What's the verdict on The First Nudie Musical? Never seen the movie, and was thinking about picking up the "special edition" DVD.

I was born in Miami and grew up in Florida. But from 1985 to 1995, I lived in Paterson, Trenton and then finally Maplewood, New Jersey.

I do not miss the snow.
