Title: DEMOGRAPHICS
Post by: bk on May 05, 2010, 12:09:32 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the demographic for the notes is ten to ninety, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to figure out which deMOOgraphic they're in.

BK, if you meet MBarnum on Friday and it's not too close to show time, I'd love to join you.  Maybe if TCB and Ann (and maybe Jed) come down early enough, we could have our own little pre-show HHW gathering...if everyone's interested.  That could be an option if those who are driving back home after the show don't want to stay out too late. :)

Sorry I've been out of it again. Work at the census is crazy and I'd really like to get at least 80 hours of work in this week because the overtime is too good to be refused. So, I've been working 14- to 15-hour days, running home, sleeping and running back to work.

I'm glad it's Ask BK Day, because if anybody asked me a question, about all I could do would be to diddle my lower lip. A sport I'll admit being fairly good at on occasion.

So, here's the question: BK, will you go see/have you seen the revival of "Promises, Promises"? The reviews seemed to have confirmed all preliminary chatter about the show. My big issue is: Why was "Turkey Lurkey Time," from what I hear, being staged as if sung by three no-talented bimbos who just sucked up some helium? This could be the big showstopper, as far as dancing is concerned, yet it's being treated like a joke. And it's landing little applause.

Good morning, all! Today is a long day but I hope it wil be a good one. I've got the McGlinnventory at 8:30, followed by a trip to Toyland, where I will meet Mr Skip Kennon for edits on a Victor Herbert show.

I've got some work to begin for the WIZARD OF OZ project: scoring several of the songs that never made the final stock-amateur rental package in 1911. I've got four here to work on, but there were althogether around 50 songs, mostly interpolations, that came and went during the show's run between 1902 and 1910. We can't restore all 50 because some are lost forever, but others like the "coon" song "The Witch Behind the Moon" are simply too offensive to be performed today, and there are too many of that ilk.

Last night I finished up Season Four of BONES. I enjoyed thre last episode with everyone in a different reality, and I thought it was a nice change after the episode before it involving Booth's tumor.

Happy birthday, DR George! I'm happy you got my e-card.

Seems like the Tony Nominations provided a rude wake-up about something I've railed about all season long:

Those powers-that-be, the producers, only gave us two musicals with original scores this year.

So, as has happened many times before, the "Best Score" category includes music from non-musicals.

Make you mad?  Want to do something about it?  I have a modest proposal:

NEVER pay money to see a musical that uses pre-existing music, not written for the theatre.  That means, this season, boycott “American Idiot” 'Million Dollar Quartet' 'Everyday Rapture' “Fela!” and “Come Fly Away,”

ONLY pay money to see the musicals that were written for the theatre.  I realize that the ever-popular Mary Poppins and The Lion King are hard to categorize, as half their songs were written for the original Disney films, half weren't.

If every theatre-goer followed my modest proposal, you'd see plenty of original musicals open on Broadway each season.  The public, voting with ticket purchases, has to state its preference.

I also want to try to finish that GARBO documentary that I started last night. Since she made all of her American films for MGM, it's nice that TCM had instant access to them for this feature. Of course, it's not an exhaustive study of her work either. Skipped right from ANNA CHRISTIE to GRAND HOTEL and then to QUEEN CHRISTINA and looks like ANNA KARENINA will be next.

blah blah and then we said blah two four six and then there were two and the man went up the tree to and two the man went up the tree
one two three and then one two four and we went up and down and jack and kate and then sawyer came and one two three four and then
I didn't really love last night's show.  The alternate stuff with jack and locke was just okay. And the stuff on the island really didn't do it for me. I don't know if i believe the sad part is true. I was expecting to see them walking on the beach. But if it is true then i can understand why so many people are pissed at the writers.  Even if they end up with a happy ending in the other world i don't see how this can be satisfying to fans. We have waited so long to see these two reunited. This would not be a satisfying ending for them. And i get that in past seasons people have died who we liked (example charlie). But this is not the same.  If they are dead maybe the writers can justify it by saying they are together and they risked their lives for each other. But to me that is crap. These are two of my favorites and i wanted a happy ending on the island too!

Well, duh, I didn't think to look on Amazon.  I couldn't find it on Netflix, which I thought was odd.  My book group has an August tradition of reading a book and having a potluck dinner and watching the movie together.  When I saw Betty Draper reading The Group on MAD MEN, I remembered my father bringing a copy home to my mother in a paper bag.  She hid it away and wouldn't let me (age 12) see it.

So, now I have my very own copy of the book in my computer bag and Richard tells me that I can request that Netflix get a movie if it's not already on their list.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I'm waiting for the exterminator.  I also got up a little earlier than usual today since the maintenance man was scheduled to come in this morning to fix the leak in the shower. Of course, when he arrived and went to fix the leak, the leak was no more. But he did install a new shower-head, so at least it was not all for naught.

Thanks DR Jose. I had posted the link but then realized that they put key words in it.

My sister and i were having a similar discussion this morning. I was saying (even though i watched LOST last night) that tv guide and ew.com both put spoilers in their headlines and it really bugs me.  Especially since this tv guide article then posted big spoiler alerts about not reading the stories before watching the show. Don't they realize they are spoiling it just with the headlines.

Nope, no need to see any production of Promises, Promises that does not respect the material - don't want or need to hear two Bacharach and David hits that have nothing to do with the show, don't need to see the crass sop to Mad Men by moving the time period of the MUSICAL back six years, and don't need to see chorus boys added to what was and always should be a joyous solo number for the leading man.

Totally up for it - we could even do it at four-thirty so you have plenty of time.

That fine with me...if we get done early enough, would you and David want to meet the cast before the show?

It has turned cold again.  We have even had snow flurries.  This morning I left the house at 7:40 to meet my hiking group.  We drove up higher where it was even colder & hiked around patches of snow for a 4 mile hike.   I felt bad not taking Sherlock this morning, however I decided I shouldn't drive the bumpy winding road to the trails and it was more fun to ride with the group.

After the hike I picked up a few things at the drug store & then met Keith & Sherlock.  We transferred Sherlock to my car & I took him to the regular trails where he played with multiple dogs.

Five hours later I returned home very hungry.

Ask BK Day:  If they should make a film version of THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X, who would you cast in the leads?

I've thought about it a lot - Eugene Levy maybe as The Brain - he'd be very funny, I think.  Jason Graae as Zubrick, or, if they wanted a name, maybe Marty Short.  Alet should be Yoni, but if they wanted a name, there are a few people who could do it.  Fred and Joyce could be James Marsden and Amy Adams (Amy's good enough to be a Yoni, too), and General Mills could be, hmmm, who?  Narrator/Professor Leder could be Steve Carell (is that his name?) or someone like him.  It would be so much fun to cast it like that.  And shoot it in 3D.

DR Jose that LOST finale schedule link you posted makes it seem like that sunday is gonna be crazy.

They have a 2 hour look back/recap from 7pm-9pm. Then the show from 9pm-11:30pm. And then jimmy kimmel from 12:05am. Oy.

I wish that they had done the recap on saturday and the show from 8pm. I think having it end at 11:30pm is too late. It's a sunday night. And people will want to savor and focus on the finale. Not be too tired to watch.

I have never heard this one way or the other.  A number of years ago I thought I had carpal tunnel & went to a doctor who said it wasn't.  A couple of years later I went to a hand specialist to confirm the 1st diagnosis.

I began my viewing with last night's LOST.

Well, I did cry, and pretty copiously for the last fifteen minutes of the show. Not only the two major characters ' deaths, but I also got choked up with Jack talking to Locke in the hallway during the alternate reality timeline story trying to convince him to do the surgery and with the four survivors on the beach just so devastated about the events that had just happened.

I thought it was a SUPER episode, was exciting and surprising, and, of course, tremendously sad. DR Jennifer, I love those characters, too, but you certainly ought by now to not be surprised by any deaths on LOST, even of beloved characters, and the fact they were just reuinted makes it all the more painful and memorable. There is a price to pay to stop this monster, and I suspect we haven't seen the last of the deaths.

Then I watched today's work project ELEKTRA. It's a pretty garbled movie. I knew nothing of the history of this comic book character, and the piecing together of her backstory with hallucinations and other mystical elements didn't work at all for me. The momentum just never seemed to jell for the picture, so the action sequences were kind of flat. Jennifer Garner looked good in that red outfit, however.

As I mentioned earlier, there were several REALLY long documentaries. Together they ran longer than the film itself which is kind of ridiculous. The longest was 87 minutes long. Others were 53 minutes and 52 minutes.

Good Evening!

So... I met some friends for a Cinco de Mayo dinner at a Mexican restaurant on the Upper West Side.  By the time we got there, there was a bit of a wait, but since one member of our party was running late, it actually all worked out.  -At least in regards to getting seated.

Once seated, we noticed that the sound level in the place was much louder than usual. We also noticed that they had taped in a special Cinco de Mayo menu into and over the regular menu pages.  There were no special Cinco de Mayo dishes, however, there were a couple of special Cinco de Mayo prices. Some items were priced $5-8 higher than normal. The guacamole which is normally priced at $8 was now $12, and their House Nachos went from $10 TO $16(!?!?!?)...

After a couple of knowing nods, we got up and left, and headed for a cozy little taqueria a few blocks away. Muy bueno!

Someone just said if Advil is helping the discomfort that much even teemporarily, it's likely not carpal tunnel.  This is good news, but I can't find it confirmed anywhere.

DR FJL - Carpal tunnel is more an "internal-nerve-related" condition, and meds such as Advil and Tylenol only help relieve the pain that comes from inflammation that comes from "outer-nerve-related" pain.  If you're really feeling much better after a standard dose of Advil... Have you considered that it might be arthritis?

If it was carpal tunnel, you'd be feeling something constantly, basically a dull ache with bouts of sharp pains and/or a "pins and needles" feeling. If the pain and discomfort just flares up from time to time, well... My guess would be arthritis, and with the change in temps and humidity over the past couple of days, well...

Time to leave work and meet the family for the birthday dinner!

Until later!

Don't forget to have some cake!

We didn't have cake, we had cupcakes!  My niece made vegan (that's all she does) cashew and cardamom cupcakes.  They were surprisingly good...a little dry, but not bad. :)
