Title: HEALING HANDS
Post by: bk on November 20, 2005, 12:05:51 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have soothed the savage breast or the savage beast or some savage or other, and now it is time for you to post until the savage cows come home - they're being milked by healing hands and they are udderly fascinated by it.

Yesterday was a busy day for me.  I had to go to work to make up a few hours (not enough, though...I will have to use some vacation time this month).  After that, I went downtown and ushered for CAYSA (http://www.caysa.net/home.htm), which is the Capital Area Youth Symphony Association.  I didn't have to stay for the whole thing (purely instrumental music bores doesn't interest me).  When I got home, I started burning some CDs.  (Shhh!!  Don't tell anyone, but I'm copying some things that I got from the library.)  It's going to take a while, and won't be finished tonight (I'm not staying up all night).

Tomorrow, I will finish the aforementioned CDs, then I MUST finish making CD booklets for some CDs that were sent to my by a fellow Manhattan Transfer fan.  I said that I would make some booklets in exchange for the CDs (radio shows where the performers (mainly Janis Siegel and Tim Hauser) are the hosts of the radio shows, not the guests!  These were recorded back in the early to mid-1980s.  They played almost none of their own songs, just a lot of 50s and 60s music.  But I have to get it done tomorrow.  So, get it done, I must!

Good morning, all!  7:30 is too early to be up on Sunday but I've got another busy day.   I have to drop off the Mario Frangoulis numbers, there are Toyland edits this morning, an opera performance in the afternoon, and hopefully a quiet evening.  Tomorrow is both another day and a less busy one.

We must have photos of Hildy the Dog - whose full name no doubt is Hildy San-Tomas!

And of course James laughed at MA AND PA KETTLE GO TO TOWN!  It's funny!  "Are you the Kettle in underwear?" "Yes, but how did you know?" "Why everyone in New York knows!"

And the glass of water poured from the top of the Empire State Building....and the square dance with the stolen bag of money!

Who wouldn't laugh?

Hmmmm-historical event....hmmmm

Dallas, November 22, 1963.

The drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence.

And would love to dress up like an Indian and join in the Boston Tea Party!

Good morning!

It's cool and overcast in this part of the world, and that's OK for a change. Too many mornings with cloudless blue skies does get fairly monotonous.

I went out on my usual Sunday morning errands of ATM and grocery store and will start laundry in a little while.

Yes, I'd like to be in the Texas Book Depository in 1963 as well to see for myself what was really goiing on there. And then go back at the same exact moment to the "grassy knoll" to see what I could see from that vantage point, too.

Hello all, hmm historical event...there are a lot of them, but I'd love to have been there at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  It must have been an incredible "we are really doing this" moment. Knowing it would royally tick off King George and very well may lead to their deaths. What a moment that would have been.

Historical moments:  I'd love to be in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel on June 4, 1968.  I'd be wearing an apron and carrying a heavy tray as Bobby Kennedy exited the ballroom and entered the kitchen.  I'd personally bean Sirhan Sirhan over the tray as he pulled out the pistol he used to kill Kennedy.

There's a cranberry-pear salad Tyler Florence made on a food show on the Food Network a week or so back.  Looked phenomenally good, and I'm thinking of making some for me for Thanksgiving.  Of course, I'll be eating it with a pork loin instead of a toikey...but that's okay!

I've an entire day looming before me.

I "may" watch "Return of the King" today.   It's a major time investment, so I might opt to watch three other films instead.

For those with a lust for the tangy tart tastiness of relish, I offer up Tyler Florence's cranberry-pear relish (no, I don't know why "orange" isn't part of the name).

From a "How to Boil Water" episode on Thanksgiving meals:

1 small navel orange
1 (12-ounce) bag fresh or frozen cranberries
1 Bartlett pear, cored and cut into large chunks
1/2 cup light brown sugar
Pinch kosher salt
3 tablespoons pecans, toasted and coarsely chopped

Wash and dry the orange. Cut the orange into small wedges, including the peel, and put in a food processor. Add the cranberries, pear, sugar, and salt. Pulse until coarsely chopped. Transfer to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 2 days. Just before serving, stir in the pecans.

A quick hello from Times Square.

Had aftertoon tea shopping with Vixmom and the Vixtor. Dinner with Ben ans dinner with Ben. Then I saw Avenue Q. More about that when I get back to Florida or I use a computer at Kinko's. I was going to go out and hit the town but I was way too tired. I had been up since 3am.

Today I had a nice 32 block walk uptown and took the subway back to Times Square where I waited in line for a ticket to Alter Boyz for the matinee.

Well got to get going. A lot more thinsg to do.

The Human Society gives you a certificate which pays for the spaying. In Hildy's case they were not absolutely sure she if she had been spayed or not. They could not find any scar, and presumed that she wasn't. I guess all they needed to really do was bring Digger over to her kennel and he would have shown them!

Hildy has been vomiting up all her food, which has me concerned. She is hardly eating, also. I bought the kind of food that she was being fed at the shelter, but maybe she needs a type for sensitive tummys.

I decided we will have our vet visit today, right after my neice Katie and her husband Brian come over to visit this morning...which means I had now better jump into the shower.

Simply changing locations can cause puppy tummy trouble.

But I also am not fond of the living conditions in SPCA kennels.  A good checking by your vet will help find any disease problems Hildy might have.

I'm so glad you're giving her a home!  And yes, pics soonest when you can!

Had a very nice dinner last night with Michael Shayne. We ate at the Theatre Row Diner on the corner of 42nd Street and Dyer Avenue (a little jog that lets cars come into Manhattan from the Lincoln Tunnel. He looks great (Michael Shayne, that is). He has lost weight and he says his back is better. I went to see the new Christopher Durang play, Miss Witherspoon, at Playwrights Horizons. It's very funny and extremely well done. It opens in a week (IIRC). I hope it gets good reviews and is extended. It's about a woman who searches for meaning in life through various reincarnations. Jesus makes an appearance along with other funny (and unpleasant) characters. If you're in NY, I recommend the show. While it is very funny, Mr. Durang makes some good points about the misuse of religion and questions peoples conception of "the afterlife". Good, good stuff (IMHO).

Someone asked me if my comments regarding HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE meant that I didn't enjoy the film.  On the contrary, I thought it was a very good film.  I would give it three and a half stars (out of five). There were some great moments in the film.  Still, I  believe that PRISONER OF AZKABAN is still my favorite of the four films.

It is gorgeous in New York. It is supposed to get rainy and cold during the week but today it's perfect fall weather. I was out and about, going up to Penn Station to get my ticket on the Long Island Railroad for the trip out to Ronkonama on Wednesday. I did a bit of shopping and I'm about to go out again for other things. As much as I don't want a car and don't miss a car, it is aggrivating to have to go to two or three stores to purchase things because you can't get everything at one store. You've got bags that are too bulky to carry around so you go home to drop them off and then you head out again to make other purchases. If I had a car, even if I had to go to more than one store, I wouldn't have to go out three times. Oh, well. It's one of the small drawbacks of living in the City That Never Sleeps.

Looking forward to WALK THE LINE and KING KONG!!!!  Fingers crossed that we get a good ape!

I watched a couple of different "King Kong" trailers on-line and it looks like it's set in the 1930s.  It was incredible!  I was totally blown away and now I really want to see this.  I was quite ambivalent when I had first heard about Peter Jackson making this movie (right after I saw "LOTR" and heard that Peter wanted to make this before he could even think about the possibility of doing "The Hobbit") but the trailers totally changed my mind. ;D

Hopefully, NOW he'll do "The Hobbit!"

Hi all!  Yes, I'm still alive.  Still in some pain but not half as bad as before.  I will be calling the doctor tomorrow to set up an appointment ASAP.

In fact, I will be driving in to work tomorrow so that if in case I can get an appointment tomorrow I can leave work to get to him.  What a bother.  I hate this kind of stuff.

DR Jason, I am sorry I didn’t wish you the happiest of Birthdays yesterday.  I saw your comment about sending me get well wishes for Michael Ball (and I thank you for them) but with all the wonderful guys on HHW who sent me theirs, I don’t think I need them.

One thing I did do yesterday was get caught up again on all everything I had Tivoed. Lost was really a GREAT show this week—I LOVED it!

Invasion
is another one of those train wreak show as far as I’m concerned.  I really don’t like it but I can’t stop watching it.  Like Battlestar: Galactica

Invasion really does remind me of Shawn Cassidys other show, American Gothic (that was one of the things I hit the “Buy” button on).  Something odd going on and the sheriff is right in the middle of it.  In fact, I even think the two sheriff’s look very much alike.

I’m also starting to really, really, really like Boston Legal.  When I think of all the shows I missed BT (Before Tivo)  Ahh well.

Congrats to DR MBarnum on the newest family member!

I'm so glad to hear that DR Michael S is having such a wonderful time in NYC!  Was it only last month that we had the gathering?  It seems like yesterday and it seems like such a long time ago.

Everyone ready for Thanksgiving?  I ventured out for a bit today to get the usual items, dog food, dog goodies and I think I've got just about everything we need for the stuffing that I so look forward to every year.   Yum!!!

But, how are things in Glocca Morra, or TACOMA, for that matter, this fine day?

Things in Tacoma are gray and overcast.  However, in less than one hour, the sun will shine brightly, because I will get to watch an entire game of my beloved Seahawks.

Shameless self-promotion of the day, probably in part spurred on by the Talkin' Broadway review last Thursday.  LAST STARFIGHTER is #3 on the footlight.com "Top Sellers" chart overall, and at #1 on their Cast Recording chart - at least for the moment.

A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS has always contained one of my favorite Gershwin scores, and George and Gracie's comedy banter is memorable. They are also pretty nifty hoofers in their two numbers with Astaire. Otherwise, the film is a near-miss with a plot for air-headed than usual.

Sad to say, this RKO Picture is in sad shape quality-wise, too, at least the print used on TCM. Lots of print damage and spotting.

Saw a KING KONG trailer shown during KISS KISS BANG BANG last week, and it didn't make me long to see the film. The guy I went with was blown away by it, but I found with the intense sharpness of the widescreen image very "computery" looking. (Kind of like the first SPIDER-MAN looked to me).

Hildy's checkup went well. Doctor thinks that it might just be stress that is causing her to vomit and not eat much....he says that aside from being way too thin she appears to be a fine health.

I must now hie myself to Walmart to pic up doggie and cat pictures and to the pet food store to find some sensative stomach Science Diet food....and a rechargeable hand vac for to clean up mass amounts of dog hair in my car and in my home! LOL

Watched LIFEBOAT this afternoon, too. My heart sank a little bit during the credits and first foggy sequence as all the spotting and speckling made it look like it was going to be a sub-standard transfer. But when the fog cleared, so did the image, and it became very pleasing to the eye. Glad to finally have this. That pretty much completes my Hitchcock collection.

Although it has been a fantastic weekend, what with getting Hildy and all, I did have some very sad news yesterday when I learned that my good friend, and past interviewee Carolyn Kearney passed away on Friday.

Her son Charles Bloom called me yesterday morning to let me know. Carolyn had throat cancer (although she was not a smoker) and had just found out about a month or two ago.

I visited her when I went to Los Angeles in July. She had lost a lot of weight. I am really glad I had a chance to see her, and I will sure miss her phone calls and letters...she was such a sweet gal.

I will try to watch her episode of THRILLER this week, or perhaps her movie HOT ROD GIRL or THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE.  :'(

Back from a wonderful production of the opera A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at Juilliard.  One of our friends couldn't make it because of a fall two days ago so we had an extra ticket.  I offered it to my friend Marni Nixon who was outside waiting for her husband to see if he could buy two tickets at the box office.  They had one, so he took it, and Marni was my date for the afternoon.  She's such a fantastic lady, working on her autobiography which is titled something like AUDREY HEPBURN DUBBED MY FACE.

I wasn't crazy about the scenery, but the staging was fun, and the young voices were wonderful, particularly the Demetrius and the coloratura soprano playing Tytania.  All in all, a great afternoon.

DR MBarnum, I'm sorry to hear of Miss Kearney's death.  It was sweet of Charles to give you a call.

DRGeorge, I thought the preview for KING KONG was a lot of fun, and I cannot wait to see it.  The dinosaurs had me as much in thrall as their bones do at the Museum of Natural History, and the design for the film looks wonderful.

On another pet note, I have decided to take Callie and Nilla with me to my parents' house for Thanksgiving.  I haven't taken them anywhere since I found my catsitter about a year ago, but the dinner and crowd will be at my brother's house and for the first time in ages....no guest dogs at my parents' house during a holiday.

So, it looks like I'll be taking them.  I have to watch the weather, it might get bad either Wednesday night or Thursday morning so I"ll be going whichever isn't too bad.  I haven't had a chance to spend time with my parents in awhile without the entire family there.   The plan right now is to leave here on Wednesday night and stay until Saturday morning, but if the cats are with me I may stay until Sunday.

Sunday greetings, all!  My day started rather oddly:  at a routine appointment last Monday, my doctor suggested a couple of tests that have to be done at the local hospital, one of which had to be scheduled.  When the nurse called to make the appointment, they didn't have any of the times I'd requested, but did have 8am today.  So, I was there at 7:45 this morning, duly tested, and back home by 8:15.

Slept for a couple of hours and then went to the matinee of The Full Monty at Dayton's Victoria Theater.  Richard and I had a quick supper at Panera Bread and did most of our Thanksgiving grocery shopping on the way home.  We're having 13 for sure on Thursday, maybe 14 or 15.

Now, I'm off to watch Warm Springs.

Watching the new POSEIDON ADVENTURE....almost 55 minutes in and NOTHING is happening.  There are a lot of things wrong with it, including an unnecessary terrorist subplot....I don't know what will cause the disaster, but if it's terrorists and NOT nature, the whole story changes.

Typical of the "re-working" - the kids' parents are on board, squabbling; Mike Rogo is a single man working for Homeland Security; and Belle Rosen is a widow!

Well, I guess I can safely avoid Poseidon Adventure tonight.

According to IMBb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419358/):

Plot Outline: A cruise ship succumbs to a terrorist act and capsizes on New Year's eve. A rag-tag group of survivors, spearheaded by a priest and a homeland security agent, must journey through the upside down vessel and attempt an escape.

and:

User Comments: 3 hours of my life I won't get back.

The only reason that I was planning on watching it was because there is ALSO supposed to be a major motion picture re-make of this and I'm going to want to compare.

Hey everyone, sorry I've been E&T for a few days... I seem to be having time management issues lately.  I must resolve to be more organized.

Anyway, Jason, happy birthday!

I finally caught up on season 1 of Lost, and now I'm freaking out and I NEED to see what happens next!  Anyone have the first episodes of season 2 recorded and want to loan them to me?  Put me out of my misery, please!

I seem to have misplaced War and Peace and I was so close to the end... and something really exciting had just happened... so I'm cliffhanging there too.  Sigh.

In other news, the student film is finished... almost.  Now the director is having second thoughts about his choices, so it's a good thing I didn't call them to make offers yet!  Sheesh.  Well, that's exactly why I decided to wait over the weekend to give him time to sleep on it.

Question for you actors:  I asked an actor how tall he was and he seemed to get a little miffed about that.  I needed to know because we didn't get to match these two people up, and we wanted to cast them together but we didn't know if it would look ridiculous, since the guy is a little on the short side and the girl seems taller than she actually is.  So the question is, Is it inappropriate to ask an actor his/her height?  I've always thought it should be on the resume anyway... so what's the issue?

Okay, I hope to be back around more frequently, what with the holiday coming up.  I'll have more down time and be able to come here to relax and commune with you fine people.

OH and I saw Harry Potter at midnight Thursday... and I can't really tell you what I thought of it, because I couldn't concentrate on the plot.  That's all I'm gonna say about that... but I think many of you can probably imagine why.  Let's just say those boys sure are grown.  :o

When I finished my cleaning tonight, I put in a movie I haven't watched in several years - DANTE'S PEAK.

Even for a film made some years ago and a DVD that was one of the earlier ones done at the start of the DVD revolution, the DVD transfer still looks good, and the special effects are very well done. I couldn't remember how it ended, so I enjoyed seeing it in its entirety.
Title: Re:HEALING HANDS

Since I had about 45 minutes before the start of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, I put in the DVD of GIGI, another film I haven't watched in at least a couple of years.

It is an enhanced transfer, but this is a movie that could do with a face lift. The color was fine, but there was dirt on the print used and thus it didn't look as good as it could have looked. It seemed slightly darker in look than I remembered, too. It has a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack, but the sound engineers didn't route much music to the rears at all and they are virtually wasted.

Still, I got through "She Is Not Thinking of Me" before I closed it down for the night.

After the Ball was also on the Footlight chart, but we've never been number one on the cast album chart until now.

I thought GIGI was Dolby Digital 3.0; shows what I know!  :-[
I watched my second black and white movie for the weekend (yesterday was the magnificent DETECTIVE STORY), THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, which I admit that I had never seen.  I got quite teary-eyed during the last scene between Olivia and Errol.  For a film that's a trifle over two hours long, the time flew!  This may now be my second favorite Flynn performance - his Robin Hood is still my favorite.

BK - Actually, STAGES/TOGETHER AGAIN had to have charted high on the footlight.com cast recording chart at some point also.  I can't link it online at this point, but I have  a printout of a 90-day-period chart where STAGES/TOGETHER AGAIN was #13 out of 100 cast recordings over that whole 90-day period.  So it must have been in at least the top ten at some point during that time.  (I can send you a copy of the printout if you want it for Kritzerland's records.)

What in HELL is going on here?  I do feel everyone is sitting around on their complacent butt cheeks whilst none of us have very many excellent postings to read because of said complacency.  Oh, we'll hear the same thing - "I was too busy to post on the weekend, oh, I was doing this, oh, I was doing that" but that will not stop the bitch-slapping that will occur, oh, no, that will not stop the bitch-slapping that will occur.

And DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had some laugh out loud funny moments tonight along with some touching scenes, too.

I enjoyed this a lot, too.  So, what's going to happen next with George and Bree??  That's what I really want to know!

And I just noticed...two shows on ABC on Sunday night have a character named George.  What a coinkydink! ;)

I guess there's just TOO TOO much happening on Sunday evenings for folks to pay the likes of us a visit.  All our late-night visitors have turned into WUSSBURGERS - not only WUSSBURGERS, but WUSSBURGERS WITH CHEESE.  And dear reader Jose has disappeared altogether.
