You must have posted this answer at the same time I posted my question.  But what exactly is a St. Andrew's Ball. I never knew such events were taking place right in my own backyard. Which hotel was it at?

Well.. simply put it's a scottish charity ball held at the Queen E for the last few years. It's been going on in various locations and forms since the mid- 19th century. Guests of honour (usually from scotland) come over, and there is scottish dancing, traditional food and just generally lots of fancily dressed people. The money raised goes to the St. Andrew's Society which funds a several charities. The kitchen at the Old Brewery Mission in the Old Port was entirely paid for by them and is apparently refurbished every few years.

There are tons of ethic balls going on in montreal (hungarian, Scottish, Irish, Austrian) as well as the other charity balls. They're usually really hard to find out about, although the balls are usually covered in the Gazette about a week later.

Hope this explains it... if not, I'll try again.

If you will forgive me, I couldn't help feeling -- while reading the account -- that the escort who was drinking form the flask before the ball must have been sitting there typing for you as you dictated.

lol: yeah.. I'm still tired (not hungover! no alcohol for me) and I somehow lost coherance mid-way through... I apologize, and hope it adds to the humour of the account.

Panni:  I know totally what you mean about "Bed, Bath and Beyond."

But guess what?

There's a place called IKEA that is a-m-a-z-i-n-g.  All sorts of space savers.  Take the measurements of any space you need to use and they'll find something in their store that will fit that space!!!!

And I also commiserate on the wine glasses.  I have the problem with coffee mugs.  I don't mean to collect them.  It's just that...over the years...at Christmas...or at special events...everyone seems to give out mugs...and I have so many mugs with so many logos or themes (how many Yuletide mugs does one need?)...and none match.  I cannot seem to bring myself to throw them away.

But wine glasses....I have a long history of breaking wine glasses...even fancy crystal ones.  Has something to do with the actual "drinking" of the wine, I think.

Yes, it totally does.  It brought to mind Lucy's "Vitameatavegamin" routine!  I kept wishing you had continued and that the typing had gotten worse.

DR Ron,

Don't throw the mugs away!

Give them to the Salvation Army Thrift Store near you!

You know, it's always great when your vision is improved with new glasses.  It had been four years, at least, since my last pair was new.  My optometrist said my vision had improved...that I was less nearsighted than I had been.

Strange, that!

So, I can see better.  I can read with my glasses "on"...but I've felt very odd all day...out of sorts.  And my right arm is still quite sore from the shots, which I believe are the reasons I feel hinky.

François:  Great idea, dude!

Actually, there's a lot in my small apartment I keep thinking I should take to the Salvation Army or to Good Will.

It's the actual "doing it" that's the big hindrance.  The impasse.  The dam!  That great big boulder blocking the means of escape!

And any other useful euphemism one can use to say I'm a procrastinating lazy-butt!

Question for BK:

Did you see or hear about the films Sinderella and the Golden Bra or Goldilocks and the Three Bares?

My sister Molly downloaded a Vancouver concert by Canuckistan band The Tea Party....any DR's familiar with this band?

Jrand, the Tea Party is a basic standard rock group (kind of like Nickelback if that helps you any) which has had some success here at least, although they don't play my type of music.

I'm not sure if they are still recording/together since the last time I heard anything about them was a couple of years ago.

If  your sister likes them though, suggest the Canuckian band MOIST or music by its lead singer DAVID USHER.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Yes, I did get it actually.  Mr. Cross must  have been far more popular here than in Oz, though.  I will confess, though, the title is "The Very Best of Christopher Cross", which I'm sure lends itself to more observations!   ;D

I quite like a lot of what he sang, but this is the first album I've bought with his songs.
I should leave it Ron but Mr Cross had only 8 top 40 entries in America in a three year period. Half of those were from his first album. One of those sad stories where you hit gold but can't find the magic again.

Similar story to Rachmaninov's friend Eric Carmen after his career raspberried out and Gerry Rafferty after his Stealer Wheel days. You have to admire anyone whose pop career lasts longer than five years. (I think they then move to Broadway to play a role in "Grease" or switch to Nashville to revitalise their careers).

Humm and I would have thought a God could click his fingers and the stuff would be gone!

As a mere mortal, I'm even worse.  I have a bag of old clothes in the back of the van that I have ment to drop off for the past 6 months--at least.  The sad part is I've been to the Good Will a few times and forgot (!) I had the bag in the van!

One more comment on the subject--anyone remember the old commercial where the people look around and say "We have to much stuff!" so they get some containers (can't think of the name) and put everything away.  Then they look at each other and say, "We need more STUFF!".  That always cracked me up--so true.

You don't dare lay down at my house for very long--something will be put on you if you don't move!  Space is at a premium!

Gee!  Ya know, it doesn't matter to me, Tom.  I bought it because his songs have been running through my head for several weeks.  I did not have any of his recordings, and now I do.

I know he "was" popular...and I only paid $9.99 for a CD with 19 songs on it.

I think I got a bargain!  Plus, there's music on the CD that I really enjoy.

 :)

OK, back from four hours of OKLAHOMA! with all those endless pledge breaks featuring people who try to sound learned about Broadway musicals and OKLAHOMA in particular and merely end up showing their ignorance. One of the hosts, commenting on all the wonderful songs in the show, explained how much she enjoyed "Poor Jude Is Dead." She must have been thinking of the Beatles cover version.

Well, I have to say I did like the production an awful lot. Hugh Jackman is a real star, has magnetism to spare, great looks, body, and voice which makes poor Josefina Gabrielle that much more uninteresting opposite him. She's talented, but for me at least totally without charm. Shuler Hensley should be booking a major revival of SWEENEY TODD because his talent could certainly carry it.

Yes, the book drags badly toward the end when you just want the show to end for goodness sakes, but the production numbers were very well put together.

My major objection to the video production was the unnecessary need to try to fool the viewer into thinking he was seeing a live stage performance when it was nothing of the kind. The show was prerecorded and the actors were performing away from the theater where the show originated. The cutaways to the audience were filmed and cut in at appropriate moments after numbers, scenes, or acts, but it was totally unneeded, especially since nary a joke gets a laugh either in speech or song (there are also continuity lapses cutting between the theater and the soundstage where the show is being performed).

Still, I will be adding this to my collection. Jackman is more than worth the purchase price and so is the marvelous dancing.

Something HAS CHANGED on this forum since I logged on.

Something that fooled me.

I went to the top of the page so that I could access something that was written yesterday...and there was no "tree"....I scrolled down, and then up....then down, and then up...and then I saw those small-sized words across the top like a menu bar....and thought, "BR. Mark Bakalor is being sadistic!"

DR George was correct about the Tony regulations. Billing determines categories in most cases, and in others, the producers submit requests which are then discussed by the Tony committee and decided before the nominators get together to decide who gets the bid.

It was my understanding that Kristin's role as Glenda was built up from the novel precisely to make her part more or less equal in size to Elphaba. I do believe Kristin has top billing which would place her in the leading actress category. But not having seen it and not having an NYC Playbill of WICKED, I have no way of knowing. I'm just basing this on what I've read about the show.

DR Ron, I think it would be GREAT if Kristin and Idina could tie for Best Actress just like Gwen Verdon and Thelma Ritter did, both for NEW GIRL IN TOWN. There have been other ties in Tony history, but this was the only tie where the two winning actresses were in the same show, I believe.

DR Ron Pulliam - I know about IKEA. Had many pieces of IKEA furniture in Canada. I called them up after arriving in LA to get directions and they were terribly unfriendly. At Bed, Bath, they treat me like I came in with Prince Charles. And the store is very close to my house. So they got my business. But I agree that IKEA has amazing stuff.

Oh, absolutely!  I think Peter Jackson is amazing.  He is so totally faithful to Tolkien.  The DVDs are where his true vision comes to fruition...and the scenes are fully realized, seamlessly edited and beautifully scored.

After seeing the films on DVD, I appreciate Jackson's commitment to the project.  I would love to think that one day, theatrical showings of the films would be in their "complete" (expanded) versions.

In the first film's theatrical release, I felt cheated until I saw the DVDs...and there all the footage was of the Shire and "about Hobbits"...and then the sequence in the woods of Galadriel, and the giving of the elvish gifts, made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world to the story.

As much as I anticipate "Return of the Kings," it's the expanded DVD I really want!
