Great review of IDA: THE LAST LUPINO in AudioFile Magazine

IDA: THE LAST LUPINO A One-Woman Play in Two Acts
by Michael B. Druxman | Read by Kathleen Godwin
Poetry & Drama • 1.25 hrs. • Audio Program • © 2018

Narrator Kathleen Godwin brings Ida Lupino, one of Hollywood's first female directors (1950s), vividly to life. Listeners meet Lupino in her decaying mansion in 1983 as she recounts how she tackled the male hierarchy. She was born into an English theatrical family and came to Hollywood as a teenager with her mother. Carefully chosen sound effects--a neighing horse or a single piano note--enhance the fine writing. Godwin's Lupino shares details about stars like Ronnie Reagan and Errol Flynn, and about her tempestuous marriage to Howard Duff. Godwin touchingly conveys Lupino's desire for a child, bankruptcy after making a film about polio, and tears over her broken marriage to Duff. The epilogue poignantly explains the rest of her life, and tragic death. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2019]

The past 30 minutes have been hell.  Annabelle and Stella came tearing through the apartment, and Annabelle jumped onto my computer table, sliding across it, knocking over a pile of books, knocking a full cup of coffee over and into my lap, and sending pencils, pens, and my glasses flying in all directions.  Half the table. my lap, and the floor were swimming in hot coffee, and I was not amused.  I'm just happy the keyboard wasn't touched.

After yelling, which sent all three cats into hiding, and cleaning up the mess, I took the bedding down to the laundry room.  Now I need to vacuum.

I have nothing to report for the TOD.

But this is a fitting post in which to say that I really enjoyed BK's YouTube upload last night (and again this morning) and I look forward to more. Not only is it new BK/Williams/Canova material, but it's another precious glimpse into the golden age variety show format, and a barely remembered one at that, with no footage having been known to exist. And damn it, we need all of that kind of thing we can get.

So, it is Friday.

I have some chores to take care of around the house, then this evening I'm going back to the Bedford Playhouse.

No classic films this time around. My friend is going to be there again playing Beatles tunes on the lovely Paul Shaffer piano, so I'll hang out in their cafe/bar area enjoying that, and then we'll all proceed to the main theater to see the new movie "Yesterday". I don't really care how good the movie turns out to be, I'll just enjoy it for what it is, and enjoy hearing whatever they do with the music. It will be a pleasant enough evening out.

Which reminds me that I didn't report on their showing of "Midnight Cowboy" the other night.

In a word ... stunning.

4k all the way, and following the great pre-show talk (they do a TCM-style intro, but much better than TCM), it was like seeing it for the first time in 1969. A powerful film and a flawless presentation.

The fresh hell continues: where did I put the booklet for the new vacuum cleaner?

If you don't find it you can probably download or just read it online.

The fact that most (all?) manufacturers of myriad products and equipment make their user guides and manuals available online has saved my ASS on any number of occasions over the past few years. For that, I remain beholden to this little thing we like to call the Internet.

The daughter of my future daughter-in-law was in a major auto accident yesterday afternoon.

She was airlifted to a hospital; hip surgery this afternoon.

Positive thoughts, please.

Guess I'll mosey on over somewhere for a light breakfast.  I'm conflicted as to where at the moment.

I watched The Landlord extras late into the night. I had no idea Lee Grant was still alive. She’s very incisive and funny and honest, but age has taken its toll.

We just got invited again to the private fireworks par-tay at the local airport on Wednesday the 3rd. This is great news. The people and food and libations beforehand are great, but best of all is exclusive entry to the airport itself where we set up camp next to the main taxiway to enjoy the display right across the field...while the rest of the citizenry must watch from way more distant locations. This is, of course, especially fine for me, as I will happily go up again in that Piper Cub or most anything else someone might be giving rides in.

Did you know that if you put enough spaghetti sauce on spaghetti squash that it tastes like real pasta?

Had some bacon and eggs, then decided to be safe and get my front two tires replaced - they've been down to their last tread for over eight months.  So, that's happening now.  Tire place is walking distance, so I came home and did more work in the garage.  Two more boxes moved and then I'm all ready for the boys to come back.
