"Chess" was way better than the professional production and actually made sense! (The best production as DR George will attest, is the Swedish one from a few years back).
All of the girls' wigs are the same color as their outfits!
And the word of the day is: SCINTILLESCENT!As they watched the SCINTILLESCENT fireworks display together, Henry wondered if there would be similar sparks between himself and Eliza, or if their relationship would merely fade like the soft embers of her cigar.
Will we never get to page two?
And dear BK....... if you had accepted my proposal I got to thinking how complicated it would be. I'd have to go take instruction and convert....you would have to take a course in the writings of Earnest Holmes... there would have to be 2 pre-nups....and then all of that fighting and bickering over "who gets to be the boy!"
What a bash it was last night. I can't believe 9 more pages came about after I conked out.
I can't eat the leg of a cut li'l ol' lamb.
Montage was sung in the film itself by the Love Generation and it must have had airplay back then. I don't know why it's a different group on the soundtrack album, unless the info I found is incorrect. It was covered by a Brit group called The Nocturnes.
Dakota-
Cal State East Bay is less then a mile from my Aunt and Uncle in the hills of Hayward, Cal. It only recently became "East Bay" as they changed the name for some stupid reason from Cal-State Hayward. It is a pretty small campus. One tall building on the hill you can see for miles around. The school only dates back to the '60s.
Although, I believe my roommate who was dealing with a flight from Boston yesterday finally made it back to the apartment a little after 2:00am last night.
And the airport officials don't suspect a thing with him approaching all the passengers and dealing? What? Coke? Grass? Meth?
Well, I'll ask her when she gets home from work this afternoon.
Very convenient.
Not as convenient as Quaker Instant! Nuke some water, zip open the packet, add, stir, wait three minutes and enjoy! (I always add butter and brown sugar.)
der Brucer
Bar NONE?
It was worse than Sally Kirkland's?????
No - she was in a league of her own!
der Brucer
Sally:
Boy! You can tell when it's the day AFTER an awards show.
Things move slowly.
Last night, we were starting new pages every five minutes or less.
There is also Quaker Crunch, instant as well. Nuke water, add to oatmeal and then stir in the packet of good stuff that includes brown sugar and a bit of cinnamon.
I vote that they bring Ellen back as host for next year!
THE INCREDIBLE, INVISIBLE ELLEN THAT'S MY BABY!
Ellen DeGeneres keeps an Oscar statuette close to her heart while hamming it up as host of the 79th annual Academy Awards last night. February 26, 2007 -- IT WAS almost as if there were no host at all.
Ellen DeGeneres' role last night in her first outing as host of the Academy Awards was so infinitesimal, it makes you wonder why they even have a host.
...
So, do you think Meryl Streep really is a Size 14? (to match her 14 nominations).
I've still got a lot of pages to read from last night. But i'm just up to the part where DR Jose was asking who jlkalman123 was.
It is me!
Did someone post the final results? I"m not there yet.
But i know i got a lot wrong. I got supporting actor wrong. Best picture wrong. And a lot of others.
Answer to last night's Paper Chase question, the movie was Paper Chase, but the book was "One L" by Scott Turrow. One L is what some schools call students in their firs year of law school. We just called them "First Years"
IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070509/) gives all writing credit to John Jay Osborn Jr. Turrow's own web site lists no film credit for Paper Chase".
der Brucer
So, Der Brucer, it appears I may be wrong about One L. Looking at the descriptions, Perini = Kingsfield. Study group = study group. And main character is a the same guy with a different name. I guess there is only so much one can say about law school... I stand corrected.
...Of course this means I won't go to Cincinnati (sorry DR Ginny) but the Atlanta seminar is for immigration and I really need it.
DR Jennifer, here are the final results
1 jlkalman123 14
2 GeorgeD 13
2 dantheman 13
2 edisaurus 13
5 cillaliz 12
5 TCB 12
7 DM 11
8 MBarnum 9
8 JoseSPiano 9
10 DR Sandra 5

I assumed that it was JMK, also! Sorry. Congrats to you, Jennifer, for picking more correct winners than me, Dan-the-Man and Edisaurus (in our three-way-tie). ;)
I did not like cameron diaz's dress or her hair. She looked much better as a blonde.
Note to Cilla:
You sure have your future work cut out for you. The news coverage on the Florida teenager kidnapping is making a big to-do over the fact that the culprit is an "illegal immigrant" - like somehow his residency status plays a part in the kidnapping.
What part are you playing in the Anna Nicole Smith Epic? I assume every lawyer is involved somehow!
der Brucer
Hmmm....actually, a google search suggests that conventional wisdom has it that Perini in ONE L was a teacher named Arthur Miller (no relation to the playwright), who had a show called MILLER'S COURT that started off locally in Boston and environs. Miller seemed to be a nice fellow, always the first to be willing to take part in cameos in the Law School Drama Society's shows.
Believe it or not, I wasn't trying to find fault. If I hadn't checked when the issue came up, I would have accepted "Scott Turrow" as a right answer. It would be more fun if you were right and IMDB was wrong and there was some legal reaon Scott wasn't claiming authorship at this time.
der Brucer
PS The presumption that I am attempting to fault-find is generally valid.
It's a whole differnt bag of apples. (I don't know where I came up with that).
What else could you come up with now that oranges cost a fortune?
I say well done to anyone who could even guess a correct winner.
Mirren, Whittaker and Hudson, in retrospect, seemed look "sure things" (but there's always the possibility of an upset).
I'd never have guessed any of the music or technical categories.
I would have bet the house on PAN'S LABYRINTH being a sure thing. I wonder if anyone got that one right.
Speaking of Best Foreign Language pics, does anyone know the story behind why LA DOLCE VITA was not even nominated in that category in 1960? Nominated for Costumes (which it won), Art Direction, Screenplay and Director, but not for Picture. Bizarre...
Also bizarre that whoever slapped together that montage of clips saluting fifty years of Best Foreign Language film award winners included a couple of snippets on LA DOLCE VITA.
How is THIS for an Oscar oddity?
The weird, weird world of Oscar.
Don't you mean weiner, weiner world of Oscar?
der Brucer
DR Edi - you'll be in New York Mar 29-30, is that right? I'm probably going to be in Atlanta for a seminar.
*DR edisaurus - I'll just bring your prize with me next week when I head to Atlanta.
Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?
The thing I never understood about PAPER CHASE was the constant need to impress the professors in class. Except for the rare seminar class, the grades were based entirely on your final exam for the course (which was graded with a code number rather than your actual name on the booklet) - unlike business school, where class participation was half your grade.
I had an exciting adventure trapping the feral cats last night on the property bordering the church and the local drinking club -- I mean service club.
One gentleman did not like the explanation I gave him about trapping them, getting them spayed/neutered, then bringing them back. He tried to convince me to leave. With a loaded rifle. I left.
Shoot!!! Yes, if the Quad Cinema hadn't moved our date back a week...
Argh! I am so bummed! I will probably go to NY the night of the 28th/morning of the 29th and come back Sunday evening.
Waaaaaahhhhhhhh!
I liked the Writer's Montage. The other one (America?) started when I was out of the room. I came back in and saw most of it but still had to ask what the theme was, because none was apparent.
You needed Billy Jack with you last night.
I had the SWAT team on my side.

Will we never get to page four? Perhaps if I eat a let of lamb.
Will we never get to page seven?
That's not the dress I saw Dunaway in. She must have changed at some point in the evening. She was in a sack type long gown with acres of ruffles at about knee length going around the dress that made her look at least 50 pounds heavier than she already is..
I sure thought it was Faye Dunaway.
I think the photo I posted earlier was from a different show...the site is "tricky".
Is THIS the dress you saw last night?????
I got four region 2 DVDs today - none of which are available here - they include Any Wednesday, William Castle's Homicidal

Yes, there is a new episode of HEROES and also new episodes of the CBS comedies, CSI: MIAMI, and '24.'CSI: Miami is a comedy? 24 is on CBS?
NBC's THE BLACK DONNALLYS begins tonight, but I have no interest in watching it.
I am fine; I am glad DR Sandra stayed home and joined in the Oscar party here.
Toby McGuire would probably enjoy the Chardonnay and the brioche, which I had just buttered for him! (You have such an evil mind!).
I finished watching the GREASE show that I had started last night.
Laura did a sizzling rendition of "Fever" with the guys that was unquestionably the best number of the evening.
I couldn't argue with Kevin being let go. I was very surprised with the choice for the girl they let go; I would have gone the other way, and this was proven almost immediately when she did a terrible song and dance, easily the weakest of the night. I feel sure she'll be dropped next week.
Congrats on 5500, it's a good enough reason to celebrate for me.
The European Union commissioners have announced that agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c". Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go.
By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by " v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.
DR Elmore, I continue to be surprised and delighted by the Brain orchestrations. I was noticing today in the Brain's song that there were several little phrases that were quoted from "If I Only Had a Brain". I love finding little nuggets like that!

My favorite orchestration for The Brain remains the title song - it makes me smile every time I hear it - it's perfection.
Elmore-You must be relieved all your packages arrived safely. Good news!
DRs Jennifer and George - Got your addresses. I shall try my best to have something in the mail to you by this weekend, but I have a feeling I probably won't send anything out until next Monday. But I will send something out. :)
DR elmore - If you still feel like getting together for dinner tomorrow... I'm actually feeling like cooking, so... I'll keep you posted and I'll call you either way.

I just read this on Playbill.com: Actor Evan Pappas Recovering from Car Crash in Phoenix (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106066.html)!
Evan played Harry Witherspoon in the BK produced original studio recording of Lucky $tiff (http://www.amazon.com/Lucky-Stiff-1993-Original-Members/dp/B0000014TX/sr=1-1/qid=1172537142/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4691709-0642501?ie=UTF8&s=music). He was also in Parade and played Benji Stone in the musical version of My Favorite Year.

:-*
Trust me, I know/knew there would be. I had to make sure to add "around my head" to clarify.
Well, that would make it easier for me to find you when I pick you up from your hotel!
Dinner Wed. PM...do you have a preferred time when I should make a reservation?
Which one? Hahahahaha.... (back on the low ground...) :o
Is 7:00 or 7:30, OK?
It's that organ, isn't it?
We now have reservations!
DR Cillaliz - Will this be your last chance to tell your boss in person? Just wondrin'.
We now have reservations!
Oh don't have any reservations about meeting Jose, he's really a nice guy. ;)
Boy, did I clear the room or what?
DRLaura-That man is very lucky you didn’t call the police. I hope you don’t have to see him again. It is so kind of you to take care of the cats. I’m a big supporter of spay/neuter & release.
Cilla-Do you normally go such long stretches before seeing your boss in person or did I miss something?
George-Darling book. :)
"Excuse me... Does this bow make my head look fat?"Depends on how tight you tie it.
Cilla-I guess you don't want to drive 200 miles to give him the news in person.
Moving on to motion picture number two on DVD - For Your Consideration

Jose - Thanks. I may need to take you up on Legally Blonde house seats. But I'll try a little more on my own first before bothering you.
