It’s Wednesday and the morning my hiking group meets, so alas I can’t stay but I shall return later.

A beautiful day here, and it's supposed to get to 50 which will be a great gift. However, snow and other bad things are being forecast for tomorrow. Doubt we'll get the snow (usually doesn't happen when they predict it), but I'll bet it will be a messy day nonetheless.

I got a "surprise" in the mail yesterday - the soundtrack CD to SILK STOCKINGS which I had forgotten I had ordered. I have other Rhino/MGM soundtracks to listen to before I get to it, but it has a place in the stack now.

Yesterday, one of my home projects was to go through the two 1/2 shelves of laserdiscs I still keep downstairs and pull the ones which have been duplicated on DVD. In an ever growing need for shelf space downstairs, these discs just have to go.
I freed up more than half a shelf of space by pulling these duplicates. Of course, the upstairs storage room is ridiculously full.

DR Jose, my throat is feeling much better. In fact it has not hurt for 4 days. But I was getting this terrible drip in my throat at night. But no drip last night!
I think I am feeling okay. It's very hard to tell though with these antibiotics making me feel so lousy. But tonight is my last one!
And depending on how i feel tonight, I may even get to touch my baby niece! Since I've had no sore throat for 4 days, and no drip last night. I think all my symptoms are long gone. But if I'm feeling even a little bad I will wait till Friday to hold her.

Has anyone noticed that Chapstick prices are really high?
Just a regular tube is something like $1.99. A tube of moisturizing balm (Chapstick brand) is $2.49 in my local drugstore.
I'm appalled.

I started off Jane's birthday by stopping at a local ATM for cash and then stopping at a Shell Station for gas. $2.43/gallon.

Last Night's AMAZIN' RACE

That had to be the saddest elimination ever. I mean, it wasn't unexpected, but the fact that all the sisters felt like their relationships will not change and that they don't feel any different about each other is just so sad. They might have bickered a lot (a LOT!), but they did come in first at least three times that I can think of--that is not bad at all! Such a shame that they feel this way.
I'm also sorry that the Linzes came in second--again! Even more sorry that the Weaver brood managed to get into the final three. Honestly, at this point--I'm predicting that the Branson family will win the race.
I'll be glad that this particular AMAZIN' RACE will be over and I look forward to March when they go back to the two-person teams that race around the world. Hopefully they won't decide to try something else cute like CELEBRITY AMAZIN' RACE.

I was trying to answer this, but couldn't even use the quote function via AOL or Safari - website not responding - so I came in through IE, where everything seems fine. WHY IS THAT?
I always have a general idea of things, and I do for Deceit. I have a "look" for the show that's in my head. I had my opening number in my head for the LACC show, but just the "look" of it, not the exact steps or patterns or anything. When I began on it, I just started with the "pre-show" stuff, which led me to the way to begin the number proper. Then, I experimented with the big entrance of the first group of people - that took a few minutes, but once I saw what I liked, the rest of that section just came instantly. Same with the third. Then I couldn't figure out the final long counterpoint section, so I went home and slept on it, then figured it out at the next rehearsal, just seeing where they were before that section started. So, I like to think on my feet - doesn't work for everyone, but it's always worked for me - it's the same way I write. Just notes, no outline.
I think actors like me - certainly singers love the way I work, and since I work in a similar way with actors, I'm sure they do, too. I can be very specific when necessary, or I can give them as much space as they want and need, and then just tell them what's working for me and what isn't and why. I listen to every suggestion, ponder, make very few instant decisions on suggestions, and basically just do whatever's necessary to make things work.
I was an actor who LOVED to give the director whatever he/she asked for - unless I thought they were an idiot, in which case I did what I felt like.

I think TAR is normally in the fall and the spring....I am tired of this seasons show. All the interesting players were eliminated early on (Gaghans, Blacks, Paolas)...of those who are left I only like the Branson family, really. The Linz family are mildly entertaining sometimes, but not recently until last night, and the guys in that team are nice to look at. The Weavers...Uhg!
I didn't mind the family thing, for me it was just that most of the teams were just plain dull.

Yeah I think the family part worked okay. Except that it is hard to really get to know the teams. I cannot tell any of the Bransen sisters apart. Same for the Linz brothers.

BK - This is probably an esoteric question, but what if a song is recorded and released on a DVD as part of a direct-to-video release, but never actually released on a CD? Does that make a difference in terms of whether you have to get permission, as opposed to just paying mechanicals?

If a song is on a DVD (film or otherwise), the producers have to obtain synch licenses and make a royalty deal with the publishers, so yes, permissions are completely different than CD.
Yes, you pay mechanical royalties on every CD sold for the life of the CD. I will say this: Many companies have never paid a mechanical royalty (I shan't name names, oh, no, I shan't name any names of record labels who've never paid mechanical royalties, but there are a few), and the publishers can't keep track and those companies are rarely chided or gone after. Unless someone alerts the publisher, oh, yes, unless someone alerts the publisher.

My big Amazon box of goodies came today (a big surprise), and I opened the Disney oddities tin first.
These are the one-shot cartoons that were not a part of a series of films (although some of the silent ALICE cartoons are part of the package).
Anyway, I jumped immediately to my three favorite cartoons on the first disc. "Lambert the Sheepish Lion" was in great shape, looked great, and the mono sound was excellent.
I wish I could say as much for the other two I watched.

Next came "Ben & Me," one of my all-time favorite Disney cartoons and, according to Leonard Maltin who does the (too lengthy) introductions on the disc (which you can't skip over), it's one of his favorites, too.
Anyway, sad to say that though the short looked and sounded fine, they've once again used the remapped version of the short without the original ending but with a made for home video ending that isn't as satisfying, to me anyway.

Worst of all was "Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom," Disney's first Cinemascope and stereophonic short.
First, the widescreen image has not been enhanced for widescreen televisions, so it doesn't look as good as it could have looked. Even worse, the stereophonic sound has been mishandled horribly and in an attempt to run it through the surround channels have managed to screw it up terribly with voices fading in and out, the right channel almost silent like its pitch has been turned down to a whisper. The sound is very directional in this short, so that makes for an impossible listening experience.
I was almost convinced I had blown a speaker except I ran a sound test to make sure all the channels were active and the speakers were working.
DR Ron, when you get yours, I hope you'll watch this short through your system to see if it's as bad as what I was hearing today.
Either I've got a defective copy of the disc (hard to believe since the other two shorts played with no sound problems) or Disney dropped the ball badly on this one.

After the disappointing experience with the Disney tin (I didn't try the second disc which has some other favorites: "Pigs Is Pigs" and "A Symposium on Popular Song"), I went back to my Season 10 of FRIENDS to get some laughs via the second disc. Hilarious.
Got to the episode where Joey appears on the $100,000 Pyramid and stopped it since it's my favorite episode of the season (except for the final episode.) I'll watch it later tonight.

Too much product being released with too little care and effort behind them.

Just read the review of the new KING KONG on the VARIETY website.
It's a measured rave. Measured because the film is 3 hours and 7 minutes long. Takes 70 minutes just to get to Kong. But once there, awewsome doesn't begin to describe it.
The reviewer is predicting LORD OF THE RINGS size grosses and thinks it might even rival TITANIC grosses.

Effie's song "I'm Not Going" is terrific (even though Jennifer Holiday's diction gets onto my nerves) - however it is NOT the first act curtain.
After the song there is a short scene with the new Dreams - with Effie nowhere in sight....she may sing "I'm not...." but she did.....
Every advance anyone makes in that show is through a bad or dirty deal. They sing a song about love and family and then they kick her out. She sings a song about staying and then she goes. It's one wacky show!
I can hardly wait for the movie! You can have RENT!!

I took our own BK for an early B'day lunch at BIRDS as I will not be around on his actual natal day to throw him a surprise partay. As he said : Laughed & laughed, etc. Then we frolicked in Counterpoint Records and Books down the street. He bought a record rarity; I bought some plays..not so rare.

I wasn't into the love story, I was into the history of the ship and what really happened. I went to the Titanic Exposition in St Paul, now that was amazing. You mean earlier movies? Or do you mean the deleted scenes and alternate ending?
Actually it's yes to both, but the reason I liked the most recent version was the historical accuracy. The history was in the background. Obviously the love story is total fiction (well there was a Jack Dawson on board, he's buried in Nova Scotia with a number of the other Titanic fatalities, lol, my parents took a photo of his grave for me on one of their vacations) but it was there and I thought that was cool.

Kong is not Titanic - Titanic, whether one liked it or not, operates on a whole different emotional level. I hear this Kong is endless, trite, and, at times, rather inane. And it doesn't matter WHAT it grosses (which will most likely be inflated), it has to make a billion dollars or something to break even. Films like this have simply killed the motion picture industry dead.

It's a very good commentary and they reference the Cameron film which I think was in production at the time, or at least in preproduction.

We are back from basket packing. It was a busy day. I cut my finger early in the day. I stanched the bleeding and put on a band-aid. During the day of work my hands got dirty and the band-aid slowly started loosening. I took it off and saw no blood so I kept it off. Then with more work the blood started again. It was near the end of the work day so I just washed my hands and wrapped a napkin and tape around it. It didn't work. Lucky Anthony was there with help in his bag. I wrapped the finger and now (after a stop at the Diner for dinner - me a feta chees omlette and Anthony scrambled eggs with home fries) it's been cleaned, disinfected and wrapped with another band-aid. All taken care of. I shall wear work gloves tomorrow (at points during the day I have to lift boxes of sweaters and such hence the dirty hands and the scrapes and boo-boos). Enough of my trials and tribulations.

Craig can’t easily call from Bulgaria but I did wake up to an email from him. A bit later his girlfriend wrote. While she made a few mistakes her English is wonderful. She sent a beautiful sweet note. She had an ordeal trying to get someone to drive her to the vet. I’m not sure how big Yogi is now, last we saw him he was just a wee thing, however she said he is now too big to be allowed in a cab. Living in the city they don’t have a car, not that Craig ever wants to drive in Romania again.

My brother George called after my hike, just as I was having breakfast-perfect timing. He always calls on my birthday.
Keith should be ready in a few minutes to take me out to dinner. We will eat in a charming restaurant overlooking the beautifully lit plaza. For dessert I shall treat myself to gingerbread. :)

We received a package from our dear friends in Nottingham. I picked it up at the post office this morning and tonight when we came home we opened our early Christmas presents. Since we will be in Dublin on Christmas Day and our friends are in Southeast Asia on a 25th Anniversary cruise we decided to open them tonight. We got a WONDERFUL tea cozy for our tea pot, a tin of English Toffees, a tin of "Travel Sweets" (candy in a metal tin with the London Underground logo) and two beautiful clown dolls which are sitting under our tree next to Pooh and Tigger (BTW, Tom, lovely card this morning of your children relaxing in the Australian sun).
Friday we are going to the Irish Tourist Board to look for any last minute trip ideas. Saturday we have most of the day free and then we have an early Christmas party. Most of Sunday is free and then dinner with an old college friend in from DC. Monday through Wednesday we continue packing, Thursday is my office party and then Friday evening we leave for the Emerald Isle. Anthony will be changing some money on Friday (he just got the check for his VW commercial) so he's getting very excited.
We may go see Auntie Mame tomorrow. Depends on how tired I am. I think Anthony is going either way. I would love to see the movie on a big screen. It's one of my favorites. Time will tell.
I'm signing off now, probably for the night. See you all tomorrow.

I received a rather upsetting call from my mother as I was on the train home tonight. No one's dead, though I suspect she wishes she were right about now.
She really wanted to surprise my dad for Christmas this year with a Rolex watch and for some reason decided Ebay was the best way to find one for less than $900. She sent a money order for $850 and has just found out that the seller was fraudulent and she won't be getting the watch. Of course, there's no way to stop payment on a money order, so she's out all that money with nothing to show for it and she felt compelled to call me about it. I didn't know what to say to comfort her - I'm the last person to call about money issues.
I'm afraid I wasn't as sympathetic as she'd like me to have been. In fact, I told her I thought it was a bad idea when she first mentioned it to me and before I knew it, I kind of reminded her of that. I also reminded her that dad had been ripped off when he ordered a $200 Mont Blanc pen on Ebay last year. She said, "Your dad is so embarassed. He says this is what we get for being materialistic," to which I replied (without thinking or censoring), "No...that's what you get for buying a Rolex on Ebay." I don't think that's what she wanted to hear and now I feel really bad about it. She followed that with, "Well, it'll just be another in a long line of shitty Christmases." I've heard that every year for the last 29 years and I'm sick of it. I told her to stop and that I'd rather not come home if she was going to start with that. Then she said, "Well, I have to go..." and I felt like a real heel.
There's nothing I can do or say to fix the Ebay screw-up or make it better and now I'm feeling really guilty about the idea of accepting gifts from them when it's possible that they won't have anything to open on Christmas day. It's not about the gifts or the money - I know - but I still feel guilty. And I know I won't be able to give them anything nice this year 'cause I just can't afford it.
I talked (and cried) about this with my roommate for over an hour and now my head hurts. I love my mom, but I'm her son - not her girlfriend or her husband...I'm not the person to tell these things to. She knows it upsets me when she does this stuff - like calling me to wish me a happy birthday just before telling me that my brother may or may not be doing illegal things - and yet I'm the one she continues to call. UGH!
OK...that's all I can handle. Done with my rant. Thank you for listening.

Family.....DR JASON....I am one of 8 children. I hear you....I hear everything you say....
I'm assuming it wasn't a USPS money order, but if you read the small print on your receipt sometimes there is SOME recourse.... If the money was sent across the state line, it is FEDERAL FRAUD and your mother should contact the Fraud Division of the Attorney General in the state the bum lives in....usually you can do it online. The amount is also probably a felony rather than just a misdemeanor.
She might also contact some other people via their emails from his previous auctions and see if they have had any success in prosecuting him.

It must be reported to eBay immediately. How did she realize he's a fraudulent seller - his feedback? What led her to the conclusion. And yes, there are indeed ways to stop payments on money orders - there is usually a number to call, but the time is critical. Also, eBay has some buyer and fraud protection and will probably cover some of it, especially if this guy has been doing it before and they haven't done anything about it. She should get his contact info - if she needs directions on how to do that let me know - that way she has his address and phone number and can try calling him.
Was the money order sent to a PO box or a home address? If it's the latter, then she should call the police department of that city and they may be able to be helpful (I did that once, and they paid the seller a little visit).

Charles Bloom has written the book, music and lyrics to the musicals Pablo (workshopped at The York Theatre Company as well as The Los Angeles Theatre Center), Insomnia (featured in the 2005 Midtown International Theatre Festival and selected to The 2005 Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre in England) and Heaven Knows (part of the 2005 Bound For Broadway V at Merkin Concert Hall). With numerous songs, parodies and pieces of special material in his catalogue, his works have been heard in cabarets, theatres and concerts on both coasts. The list of artists that have performed his songs include Michael Feinstein, B.D. Wong, Vicki Lewis, Cheyenne Jackson, Andrea Marcovicci and Bruce Vilanch. Charles also composed the music and lyrics to “Let’s Go To The Circus” (Walt Disney Productions) as well as musicalizations of Samson and Delilah and Calamity Jane with two-time Academy Award winning composer Al Kasha. I just got off the phone with my mom. We had an honest-to-God TALK for probably the second time in my whole life. It was good. I didn't tell her EVERYTHING about my life thus far, but I got some stuff off my chest and told her things that I need from her (i.e. to not go into this holiday thinking it's going to be shitty and not to call me when she really needs to be talking to a friend...or a therapist). And! She even apologized to me - for several things! And I got some apologies out, too - including ones from their trip back in November when I behaved like a snob sometimes. That may have been the best conversation we've ever had. There were certainly some tears, but we both held it together pretty well, considering. And now I'm exhausted, but I got a lot off my chest.
BK: I found out from mom that they paid with an online wire transfer. The seller is in London. According to Ebay's Buyer Protection Policies, they can't do anything about fraudulent sales that were paid for with wire transfers (Western Union). If there's anything you can think of that might help, I'd certainly look into it for them. Mom's not very internet-savvy, but my dad could look into it, too.
I really appreciate the help, and I'm sure my family would, too.

DR Jason, I also think that there is something your mother can do.
But, 1. I would always pay by credit card. That way you can stop payment if you have to. And 2. I would always check the positive and negative feedback very carefully. Someone with good feedback is not very likely to be a fraud.
I would contact ebay immediately. There is a contract between buyer and seller. And since she will have a copy of her money order, she can prove that she sent the money.
I am also curious to know how she found out the seller was a fraud.
I think you had a right to give her a bit of grief. I mean sending out that kind of money without making sure the seller is legit is not smart. BUt the fact that you are so upset about this shows what a good person you are. So don't feel bad.

Hmmm DR Jason just read your follow-up. I've never heard of paying on ebay by a wire transfer. I guess the seller found a way to beat the system.
Maybe she can contact her bank (since she had to wire the money out of her account). Does her bank allow for fraud?

1963 - Florence Henderson and Jose Ferrer co-starred in The Girl Who Came to Supper on Broadway. The production, however, only lasted for 112 shows.
1965 Lauren Bacall and Barry Nelson star in Cactus Flower. Abe Burrows directs and also adapted this work from Fleur de Cactus by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Gredy.

1994 Not a good date for Faith Prince, who opens on Broadway playing a dead housewife who returns to life in Donald Margulies' What's Wrong With This Picture?. It runs 12 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
2002 Baz Luhrmann's staging of the opera La Boheme opens on Broadway today, with a directorial concept that makes it resemble a Broadway musical. The show will run 228 performances and win a special Tony honor for its three rotating casts of leads.

I finished watching the rest of the hilarious episodes on the second disc of FRIENDS' last season. Really enjoyed seeing Phoebe's wedding again.

Then, I put in the DVD A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. Looks just fine, and the colors are more vibrant than I remembered them being. Loved it as much as usual.

Dinner was very good. My friend surprised me by calling ahead and treating me to dessert. I only had room for one bite (the rest is waiting for me). As it is I have most of my lasagna for dinner tomorrow. After the soup and bread I was full.

I saw Cameron's "Titanic" at least 9 times in the theater and I can't remember how many times at home... Like CillaLiz, I mainly watched it for the historic aspect (I'm a Titanic freak), but I do remember having a very distinct crush on Ms. Kate Winslet, too...I think she's just gorgeous!

Back from rehearsal - went very well - blocked quite a bit of act one (only two people, so not so difficult) - I'll be futzing with it endlessly, I'm sure, but it was a very good beginning. I'm not feeling that well - all that lost sleep has taken its toll on me. I'm gonna have some emergenC shortly, but right now I just have to sit on my couch like so much fish, then write the notes in a bit.

I just got back from visiting my ex-boyfriend (we're still good friends :)) and I stopped at Tower Records. I made a couple of DVD purchases for Christmas gifts and the original London cast recording of Oh What a Lovely War. It's for myself, but Alexis, the oldest daughter my friend Margo is in a production of this show at her college. She has no idea what the show is about and neither do I. I'll let her borrow it ( ;) ) so that she knows what she's getting herself in for. :D

Oh, you're not even close to the number of times I saw Titanic, let's just say it was the low double digits, and that was before I got the videotape or the dvd. I wasn't into the love story, I was into the history of the ship and what really happened. I went to the Titanic Exposition in St Paul, now that was amazing. It was a lot of artifacts that were brought up from the real ship...it was amazing how well preserved everything was. It was something
My family all went to Seattle to see the Imax film "Titanica" when my niece Hilary was seven years old. She fell in love with the story (I don't know why) and has been interested ever since. She's seen all of the different movies about it and read lots of books. Her grandmother's aunt even had a replica set of salt and pepper shakers that were the same kind that were used on the Titanic. When the great, great aunt (I thinks that that's what she was to Hilary) died, she left her the shakers. My niece was very happy to have even the replicas.

DR Cillaliz - we went to a Titanic exhibit at the Museum Center at Cincinnati's Union Terminal. Am I remembering correctly that, when you entered, you got someone's identity and found out at the end whether or not you'd survived? BTW, I liked the movie, too.
That exhibit came to Seattle! I don't remember who I had (if they survived or not), but the person my niece got was not a survivor. :'(
