Well, you've read the notes, the notes were back to normal, and now it is time for you to post until the back to normal cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: LYCHNOBITE!
-
Welcome seven GUESTS!
-
Is anybody there? Does anybody care? Does anybody see what I see? What am I, John Adams all of a sudden?
-
It was nice to eat some food after forty-eight hours of blechhhyness.
-
First non-bk post!
-
The nearest Pita Pit is 115 miles away from me... :(
-
DR Tomovoz, Millie is adorable!! :)
-
CONGRATULATIONS to DRs der Brucer and MBarnum on their new lofty perches in the clouds!!
DR MBarnum, I'm sorry about the cancellation. :(
-
Thanks for the food porn, DR JoseSPiano. :) And if you happen to go back to The Cupboard to pick up a copy of their cookbook, would you mind picking up an extra copy for me? I'll reimburse you!
ps: really enjoyed that "frozen Grand Central" video clip!!
-
Sorry to hear about the job prospect, DR Kerry. Perhaps there is someone needing to hire a bowtie expert?
I guess it's the "fiddling" part of them that frustrates me...I like instant gratification!
-
Glad to be off the DRY HEAVE and glad that bk is getting back toward 100%.
Although I'd rather have Fifty Percent of him...
Or ANY percent of him...
Than ALL of anybody else...
...at all!
;D
-
OK, back to bed...
BECAUSE IT'S SATURDAY, AND I CAN! :)
-
Thus endeth this mini-frenzy.

Oh, but before I go:

-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm "reminded" that the second morning is always something of a "surprise". Thankfully, Red Bull is one of the sponsors of the conference. ;)
-
Should we warn Lucky before DR MBarnum pulls into town? ;D
The APB has already been posted at all gyms, studio canteens and nursing homes.

ps: really enjoyed that "frozen Grand Central" video clip!!
You're welcome, DR singdaw. I'm thinking I may head back there again today. Yes, I know I should have some BBQ while I'm here in town, but, frankly, I'm just not in a BBQ mood. But that will most likely change tomorrow. We shall see. But I'd be more than happy to at least stop back by The Cupboard for a cookbook for you (and myself).
-
The nearest Pita Pit is 115 miles away from me... :(
There's one in the West Village. I haven't given it a try since there are so many non-chain falafel shop options in the area, but I guess I could always go there on a "fishing expedition", so to speak. ;)s
-
BK - Good to hear that your tummy is back to normal.
-
Good morning, all! Last night around midnight, because I'm sleeping on an air mattress and can hear things through the floor, I was awakened by the sobbing of the neighbor below me. This is the third time this week this has happened, and I'm concerned. I know she's going through health problems and surgery soon, and I worry about her. I also don't want to go down and ask her since it's only my business if she tells me something. So, if you could all send her some vibes for her health, that would be nice.
The laundry is in, and I am feeling somewhat better than I did yesterday afternoon; I was fearing that the exhaustion of this 4-week megillah was really making me ill.
DR MBarnum, the Abner and Daisy Mae are from my favorite piece of idiotic literature, NBC's dreadful soap opera PASSIONS.

As for the Topic of the Day...
Well... I still remember seeing "Orca" at the drive-in movie with my parents when I was nine, and I remember seeing it again on TV a few years later. After reading BK's "review", it's good to know that the movie is probably as stupid and confusing now as it was then. ;)

Saturday morning greetings! I'd ordinarily be half-way to work at this time, but took a vacation day today. My AAUW group is having a luncheon meeting with an immigration attorney as the guest speaker (not DR Cillaliz, though). My sister in in town and is going with me. She and I don't get to pal around much, so it should be fun.

The laundry is now in the dryers. Will it never end?
I've been trying to post a photo but I was told again that the upload folder is full.

DR GINNY - may I take a vacation day as well?
Sure, DR JRand!
-
Take some VIP and get to work.
This I shall do, nice try DR GINNY!!! Thanks anyway!
;D
Off to work.

I took a mini-vacation...I slept in until 8:00 AM! Well, if you don't count the hour I spent catching up at HHW at 3:00 AM this morning!

***HEALTH VIBES*** for DR elmore3003's downstairs neighbor...

Thanks for the Abner clip, DR elmore3003! :)
I played one of Abner's fishing "cronies" in a high school production. Always loved the show.
-
Ah Orca.......
Anyone remember the hit song from the film?
The orcas sing it to one another
My Love, We Are One (lyrics by Carol Connors and music by Ennio Morriconne)
! will bring the sun through darkened clouds
And I will live with you rainbows for your eyes
Rainbows for your eyes
Now, my love, we are one
We are one
We are one, cried my love
Let me lead you where the moonlit waters fall
Shadows softly call
My love, we are one
We are one
We are one, cried my love
Let me lead you where the stillness of the night
Delivered dawn’s first light
My love, we are one
We are one
We are one
We are one

I shall be E & T all day as today is the day the Vixter and I go to see RENT, she is all atwiter and wants to leave NOW to be sure we are not late for the 2 PM curtain
Ah well I shall take my joy from watching hers... this was a show I meant not to see
Perhaps I shall be pleasantly suprised

We plan to meet dear FJL after the show so that is something I look forward to greatly.... and we are holding out hopes that a special suprise guest will join us as well

Well off to gas up the car and brave the Long Island Distressway

Personally I think EB is in the Top 5, for me anyway.
Speaking of Top 5, I found the El Cid extra on Miklos Rozsa quite touching and well done. I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but there's a priceless anecdote from John Mauceri concerning Rozsa and Beethoven.

One of the Bluths from Bluth Brothers Theatre--Don Bluth--worked for Disney as an animator. He drew birds. At a cast party, Don was asked to do his bird imitation. It was incredibily realistic. In order to draw birds well, of course, one must study them. Don had so many of the movements, so many of the nuances.
DR MATTH, I believe, was referring to documentaries rather than animation. But, as DR GEORGE would say, I just had to pass that on.

MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER FOR HIDING WIFE'S BODY IN AUSTRALIA BACKYARD FOR 23 YEARS
MELBOURNE, Australia — A man who hid his wife's body for 23 years in a steel drum in the couple's suburban Australian backyard was convicted Saturday of her murder.
Frederick Boyle, 58, claimed he hid the body of Edwina Boyle out of panic after finding her dead in bed at their home on the outskirts of the southern city of Melbourne on Oct. 6, 1983.
He had pleaded not guilty to her murder at the outset of his weeklong trial, but a Victoria state Supreme Court jury found him guilty Saturday.
Boyle told the court this week he found his 30-year-old wife dead in bed with two bullets in her head and one of his neckties around her throat.
He said he thought he would be a suspect because he was having an affair, so he hid her body.
"Obviously, I didn't want to be charged with a murder I didn't commit," he told the court.
The couple migrated from Wales in 1972.
Boyle had told his two daughters their mother ran off with a truck driver, but a son-in-law found the remains in the 45-gallon drum while tidying the yard in October 2006.
The moral of this story: always do your own tidying up.

Fans buy nearly 6,000 bags of seeds in network protest
By DAVE KOLPACK Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press - Saturday, February 09, 2008
WAHPETON, N.D.
A North Dakota sunflower seed company says it has shipped nearly 6,000 bags of its salty snacks to USA Network offices in New York to try to save a science fiction TV show. And the actor whose seed-spitting character inspired the campaign is loving every minute of it.
Fans of "The 4400" asked Giants Seeds of Wahpeton to help with the drive after the cable network dumped the show in December. Many of the sales are international orders, something the company does not normally accept.
"I'm sure by Monday afternoon, the mailroom at USA Network will be getting somewhat full," said Tom Schuler, who handles Internet sales for Giants.
The protest, modeled after a similar campaign by fans who sent peanuts to keep the CBS show "Jericho" alive, has the support of 4400 actor Jeffrey Combs. His character, Dr. Kevin Burkhoff, was the inspiration for the sunflower send-off.
"There's nothing better than an avid fan," Combs said in an interview. "The 4400 fans have taken their loss with grace and dignity and, with this campaign, quite a bit of ironic humor.
"Love it. Love them for doing this," he said.
Network spokeswoman Kristin Schulman said the network had received about 30 pounds of sunflower seeds by Wednesday, before Giants sent its first shipment. The Wahpeton company has since shipped about 650 pounds of seeds, with orders from about 30 states and a dozen countries, Schuler said.
In a statement about the 4400 campaign, network officials said, "We love hearing from our viewers and appreciate their enthusiasm for 'The 4400,' a series we're extremely proud of, but it would be very difficult logistically to bring the show back."
The show tells the story of 4,400 people who were abducted at various times but returned at the same time near Seattle. They have not aged since their abduction and remember nothing about the time they were gone.
The network axed both "The 4000" and "The Dead Zone," also a science fiction show, at the same time.
"We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever," a vice president, Jeff Wachtel, said in a statement announcing the cancellations. "But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."
Renee Cuddahy, 32, a 4400 fan from Philadelphia, said she's optimistic the sunflower seeds campaign will work. The bags are selling for $5 apiece of $20 for a case of 24.
"I didn't realize there were so many places in the world where the show was so popular," Cuddahy said. "This is so wacky it just might get their attention."
Combs said he has chewed sunflower seeds all of his life, but has yet to try the Giants brand.
"They probably have quite a few of them over at the network right now," Combs said. "Maybe I can get a sampling from them."

Maybe you should box them up and mail them to the Macbeths.

However i think Bedbugs would be more appropos since she is now in NYC

Tom, beautiful pictures yesterday. Millie is precious...
Thank you. It will; I have faith in that.

It did turn out to be a perfectly maginficent day. I sat outside on the porch my my lunch cooked, and it was warm enough that a sweatshirt was all that was needed with no jacket. And we didn't get the breezes that the forecast said we would. They may be arriving later tonight because the forecast also said tomorrow would be very windy.
-
As for viewing, I spent the whole of this afternoon with FAMILY TIES. I watched 7 episodes. Easy to see why Michael J. Fox became a star from this show. He's really the breakout cast member. Most of the others are really there to feed him straight lines. Justine Bateman does have some good cliched lines (she's the fashion-conscious, boy-crazy, lazy with schoolwork type), but her acting isn't very good at this point in the show. I think she'll get better in later years.
-
My favorite episode of the ones I watched had Fox volunteering for a help hotline and being on the phone with a guy who wanted to commit suicide. Got to show a few more sides to his personality, and he did well with it
-
As for guest stars, it's funny seeing these famous actors so young into their careers show up here. Timothy Busfield is a recurring character as one of Fox's friends, and in other episodes, Billy Campbell, Tate Donovan, and Geena Davis have popped up.

I'm checking in before I check out; I've spent the day feeling cruddy and lying about like so much fish. I have a pain in my lower back which could be a pulled muscle, perhaps, from the lugging and toting, or a kidney stressed out with toxins. I need a couple of good days' worth of rest, so I'll turn off the lights and sleep soon. I'll get out of bed when I feel like it tomorrow, but I may stay there all day and not get up until Monday. Who knows?
-
Today is caucus day in Washington. We have been visited by the Big Three this week. However, in typical Washington State fashion, nine days from now, we are holding our Primary. I haven't a clew whether or not or Primary vote counts at all.
-
I'll be having a very early five o'clock dinner - going to Nate 'n' Al's.
An early five o'clock dinner? Does that mean that you eat it at four o'clock?
-
Handy Man should be here momentarily.

Singdaw and Jane, as per your comment about Pitapit. I have not eaten at one for they are a bit out of the way for me and tend not to be on my route of errands.
We also have Extreme Pita.
Since several mentions were made about this Pita Pit place (say it five times fast); I thought I would look at the web site to see how far away the nearest location was to me. Surprise! Surprise! We already have two locations in Tacoma.

Well, if you're a Republican, it half counts; if you're a Democrat, it does not count at all.
Only in WASHINGTON STATE PRIMARIES (http://www.secstate.wa.gov/elections/pdf/2008PP/PP%20MFQ%20Updated%20August%202007%20Final.pdf)
The Republican Party used the results of the primary to allocate all of the Washington delegates in 1992, half of its delegates in 1996, and one third of its delegates in 2000.
The State Republican Party has decided that it will use the 2008 Presidential Primary to allocate 51% of its delegates. The remaining 49% of the delegates will be allocated based on caucus results.
The Democratic Party has never used the results of the primary to allocate delegates. The State Democratic Party will only use caucuses to allocate delegates in 2008.

When you're young and so in love as we
And bewildered by the world we see
Why do people hurt us so
Only those in love would know
What a town without pita can do
If we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how bad we are
Ours is not an easy age
We're like tigers in a cage
What a town without pita can do

Good Afternoon!
Another 200 or so down, another 400 or so to go (over the next two days).
It was a pretty good day. The talent was good. Their song selections were good. Their monologue selections were good. And there were also some genuinely funny people today too, which always helps the day go faster.
I did have one major - well, major to me - "mistake". Each actor is required to do a monologue and a song in their alloted 90 seconds, however, they can choose in which order they would like to present their pieces. There was one young gentleman who placed his music on the piano, pointed out where he was starting and stopping, etc. He took center stage, announced his name and number, and then I started playing... About a measure into it, I realized he had indeed written his cue line - the last line of his monologue - on his music. However, he had already started singing. We finished his song, then he went into his monologue. When he came back to the piano to get his music, I could tell he was a bit shaken, and I apologized as profusely as I could in that situation. He left the stage. Right after the next person went, I spoke up, and informed the company members what had happened during the previous audition. He sounded fine to me during his song and monologue, however, I hope he looked comfortable - comfortable enough to get a couple of callbacks. -I'll be heading down to the dance call in a bit to seek him out to apologize again. :-\
-Otherwise, it really was a good day.

As for today's dinner excursion, I stayed close to the theatre again today. Someone had brought in a tray of chicken wings from Gus' Fried Chicken at lunch, so I snacked on those - and thus fulfilled my Gus' Fried Chicken fix - for today at least. So, after I was done with the auditions, I walked up a few blocks to Huey's (http://hueyburger.com/) for a burger and onion rings...

One of Huey's traditions is their "toothpick ceiling". With each burger or sandwich, you get two frilly toothpicks. After you're finished with your meal, you have the "option" to try to get your toothpicks into the drop ceiling tiles. The last time I went there, I was able to launch and lodge one of my toothpicks into the ceiling. This time around, alas, both of mine ended up just landing back on my table. Ah, well..

Hi! Looking for advice from the HDTV experts...I'm thinking about getting a 32" set. I'd like to get something on the inexpensive end. I've been told that for that size you really can't tell any difference between 768 and 1080. 'is that right? There's a Memorex on sale at Sears ttp://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05771787000P The picture was great and I'm considering it. I saw a nice Sony Bravia, but it's about twice the price. And there are a couple Vizios. Next to the Memorex, the picture wasn't nearly as good, but ....
Any suggestions. I'm planning to use part of my tax refund for it. As much TV as I watch I figure I deserve it.

I'm also seriously considering a 32 or 37 inch Vizio. I've heard good things from a friend who has one. I know it's lower end for LCDs, but it sounds like I won't be sorry

Jose, could you explain to some of us slower-witted people, exactly what these auditions are for and who attends them?
Both of the conferences that I play for each year, UPTA (http://www.upta.org/) and SETC (http://www.setc.org) are mass auditions. Anywhere from 800-900 people - auditioners - show up, and get a chance to audition for about 90-120 different theatre companies - all at once. SETCs is the more college-student/summer stock oriented of the two conferences, but both organizations offer opportunities for year-round professional work at all levels, all over the country. SETC is also considered the "Grandfather/mother" of all the regional conferences. -There's also Midwest (MTCs), Mid-Atlantic (MATCs), New England (NETCs), as well as the National Dinner Theatre and Outdoor Drama auditions/conventions. If you go to each organizations website, you can see which companies are in attendance. I've been playing for SETCs - both their fall and spring conferences - since 1994 (I think), and for UPTAs for the past five or six years - I've lost count.
The major difference between the two organizations is that SETC is truly a Theatrical Organization. There are State, College, Community Theatre, Children's Theatre, etc. divisions. The annual spring convention bring together all those divisions - and people(!) - under one roof, one rather large roof. I think the average attendance for the spring convention is around 4000. UPTAs is purely an audition - no vendors, no keynote speakers, etc. Additionally, the SETC Spring Convention "travels" from state to state within the conference each year. UPTAs was started in Memphis - it's part of Playhouse on the Square - and stays here.

THe parties have always controlled it..

Veggie Burger?!?!?!?! -I wasn't going to pay an extra 50 cents for a Veggie Burger. ;D
-And, yes, I know I have been splurging quite a bit this trip - and even before I took this trip. In fact, I really don't think I'm going to fit in any BBQ this time due to my latest indulgences. I'll be detoxing once I get back to NYC.

Oh, I know. The TV I have now is a Panasonic I got at Wal-Mart 6 years ago and frankly it works fine but as much TV as I watch it would be cool to have the HDTV. I can move the one I have now down the basement, and I could move the little tv there to the office where I occasionally need to view dvds and vhs evidence discs and tapes.
-
Thank you for defining the difference. Sometimes I see recipes for lemon meringue pie made with condensed milk, which never seems right to me. I love my meringue but I'm still looking for the perfect pie filling.
Cook's Illustrated has a great Lemon Meringue Pie recipe. Alas, like most CI recipes, it's a bit fussy, and sort of takes the fun out of cooking, but it is good. Just the right consistency, and a good balance of sour and sweet. -However, I do stand by CI's German Chocolate Cake recipe.

-
Do only young actors audition?
No. All ages are represented, as well as Equity and non-Equity - although, the Equity turnout is considerably smaller than the non-Equity turnout. Some companies really do prefer "Adults" to be played by real "Adults". ;)

Thanks for the warning, DR TCB.

My day with my sister was delightful. We took some donations to the site of next month's AAUW/Middletown used book sale, did a shopping errand at Kohl's, and met my AAUW friends at Olive Garden for a lovely luncheon and a very interesting speech by Linda Silakoski, an immigration attorney from NE Ohio. I'd heard Linda speak twice before and could listen to her again tomorrow. Nancy (my sister) and I went to pick up Mom and the 3 of us went to Border's for birthday presents for Rob's girlfriend. She turns 21 on Monday and Richard and I will take them out to lunch tomorrow after church.

Cillaliz - I have a 32" Panasonic (Hi-Def) in my den which I like very much, and it's a brand that I trust.
When I was a lowly Wal*Mart employee, I bought my mum a Hi-Def TV for the living room: RCA 52" Widescreen Projection HDTV w/ Digital Tuner, R52WH74, which is another brand I like.
Either set can be bought for less than a grand.
I had no troubles calibrating my Pannie, but, I took days and days to get the RCA right.

Thanks TD.

Yes, I read those. I'm just surprised there is nothing on CNet or a site like that. I've been doing more research on the Vizio 37 inch and am seriously considering it. It's had decent reviews from a lot of places. Not the best HDTV around, but it sounds very good for the price which is in the $700s.

Cilla, though I took it back because a bigger one later come up on sale for less, I was really pleased with the 32" Samsung, plus it had PIP, which was kind of cool. And it was cheap ($399 IIRC).
We've been very happy both with our Sharp Aquos and the new Sylvania 37" we have.
-
Our tv has to be turned on ten minutes before the show so it can warm up so you can see the picture. If you are lucky you can see the picture, that is. Even then, the color is bad.
I suspect when they change to the new way of broadcasting next year, we'll do without.
-
I am looking at getting a new telly later this year due to my present telly that is slowly dying. I am not sure if i will still need to get a digital antenna for the new telly since I do not have cable.
I have had good luck with Mitsubishi and I have a telly and vcr from taht company. I gave the vcr to my mother who is now using it. Both pieces are nearly 20 years old. Actually teh VCR works better than the telly. I suspect the picture tube is starting to fail and the audio is up and down at best. The picture every once in awhiile goes blurry and washes out in the middle and then comes back
It can happen when you turn it on or after it has been on for awhile. It is steadily getting worse.
-
If i watch telly, it is mostly dvds or tapes. There is a not a lot of choice of what to watch when you do not have cable.
-
Tonight's Lawrence Welk Show is a tribute to Irving Berlin.
-
What is interesting is the fact that there have been increased sunspot activity and it will continue to increase. I wonder how that will affect digital transmission?
-
It amazes me how that show lives on nearly 20 years after his death.
-
I like to watch the grandmas and grandpas dancing.

Hmm, I just got out the measuring tape and what I have now is a 27". So a 32" would probably be all I need for the same space. I was almost convinced I needed 37" now I'm not so sure. I will check out the Samsung

DR Cillaliz - I believe my parents have that Vizio model. They like it a lot. And I like it too. -If that means anything.

At least with a new telly, I can put it on Closed captioning and not have complaints of having the telly to loud

My computer guy at work has a Vizio and is totally sold on how wonderful it is. He has an outdoor antenna and says he can already get a lot of stations just using antenna. I didn't realize that each station broadcasts more than one program. I don't quite get it, but he gets three different shows from our public tv station at one time. Does that make any sense?
-
DR CILLA LIZ, I have a 37" Polaroid that I have had for about a year that I like very much. With most shows broadcast in Widescreen, I don't know if the difference between 32" and 37" is crucial.
The Memorex sounds interesting.

Three? Hmm.. Well...
I know that on my parents' system, some of the high-def versions of the networks will broadcast different shows in some slots on the High-Def version if the show that they are currently showing on their "regular" station is not in HD. I know FoodTV-HD is quite different from regular FoodTV. Their local PBS affiliate also seems to have different programming running at the same time on their channels.

Thank you, I just found it on another recipe site. After looking at the recipe, I think it would take an hour to copy it, with pencil & paper ;D
I'm curious what the difference is between the fillings on their two pies. At least I have this one & I will try it the next time I have a craving to make a pie. Personally I would rather have the option to pick up a single tart from time to time. It's hard to find good ones, especially around here.

Met up with vixter and vixmom after they saw RENT, which vixter seemed to enjoy tremendously.
We ate at Red Lobster on the corner of the theater where RENT is playing - lovely conversation, lovely Ceasar Salad, yummy mozzarella sticks. My entree was a shrimp, lobster and steak dish - the shrimp and lobster were delicious, but the steak was oddly lackluster; I should have known fish was their specialty, but I'd had a great non-fish (chicken) dish there a few weeks ago, so maybe I had the steak on an off night.

DR Jane - The Cupboard's Lemon Meringue Pie and Lemon Icebox Pie are different animals, well, at least different pies. The filling for their Lemon Meringue is definitely a custard - no condensed milk in it. The Lemon Icebox Pie filling is basically lemon-flavored condensed milk with eggs added for "body". ;)
You might want to re-think this, Jose.
And I'm quoting from Michael Ruhlman's Elements of Cooking (http://blog.ruhlman.com/)
Custard: The most basic defination of custard is simply liquid thickened by eggs, a fundamental preparation, and idea, in both the savory and sweet kitchen. Custards give us some of our best dishes -- quiches, creme brule, and creme anglaise (sometimes called custard sauce). Because they're so prevalent in desserts, we tend to think of custards as sweet, though standard custard technique -- liquid, eggs, sseasoning, mixed and baked in a water bath -- can be applied to virtually any flavor to which you want to rbing the custard texture. An herb custard to garnish a savory soup, olive oil custard with a la grecque vegetables, tarragon or bone marrow with beef. Escoffier added a diced custard (called a royale) to consomme. The liquid might be partly vegetable or fruit juice, though fat is a large part of the custard's exquisite texture and shouldn't be avoided altogether.
In other words, condensed milk is not what makes a custard a custard. That's the job of the eggs. Both the Lemon Meringue and Lemon Ice Box pies, if both contain eggs in the fillings, qualify.

OUCH!
I doubt that Don Bluth would necessarily want to be remembered for his time at Disney. He notoriously led a walk-out of Disney animators, reportedly about a third of the animators on payroll at the time, because he was dissatisfied with the lower quality of work Disney was insisting on. He then went on to direct The Secret of NIMN, An American Tale, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Anastasia, and Titan AE, among other films.

Cilla - I agree, the biscuits were glorious!
I wish they took reservations, rather than having the wait-until-the-contraption-lights-up system for getting seated. I'd eat there a lot more often.
-
I'm watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - I didn't realize that Helena Bonham Carter was in this. So she worked with Johnny Depp before Sweeney Todd.

I have cleaned the dead mice out of the garage. That is all.
So, this means your garage is now, uh, squeeky clean?
;)

You might want to re-think this, Jose.
And I'm quoting from Michael Ruhlman's Elements of Cooking (http://blog.ruhlman.com/)In other words, condensed milk is not what makes a custard a custard. That's the job of the eggs. Both the Lemon Meringue and Lemon Ice Box pies, if both contain eggs in the fillings, qualify.
Picky, picky, picky.
Don't you have a Rachael Ray cookbook to "read"?
;D
-
Seriously... The Cupboard's Lemon Icebox Pie and their Lemon Meringue Pie are truly different pies. That's really all I was indicating.
Interestingly enough, the recipe - at least the one in their cookbook - for their Lemon Icebox Pie does not call for cooking of the eggs. Hmm... -Ah, for the days of pre-salmonella scares.
And, yes, I know, technically speaking, that Hollandaise, Bernaise, and the other "spin-off" sauces are also technically custards.

Absolutely right. At that screen size, 768p and 1080p won't look any different. The eye can't differentiate the difference at normal viewing distances.
Vizio has gotten better reviews in the magazines I read than the Memorex. Also, remember that TVs usually aren't calibrated for the home viewing setting in stores. In stores, they're dialed it to accentuate color and pop under bright lights, but they're often tinkered with by others, too, so unless you calibrate it yourself at the store you have no idea what they've been dialed into. Don't think for a second that they're calibrated for optimum conditions at the store.
So go with price and features. Once you get it home, most name brands can be dialed in to get good to great pictures depending on the sources you use.
-
Just read that hD DVD and Blu-ray discs have problems being closed captioned...
Absolutely not true. At least not Blu-ray. I haven't reviewed a single Blu-ray disc that didn't have English subtitles, CC, or SDH. And they worked just fine.

Snoggery occurred.
Of course.
And quite wonderful was the snoggery. It will be saved.

RE: the new ABC series Eli Stone.
What is the biggest fantasy aspect of this new show?
A) That someone as goofy looking as Eli can have a fiancee as great looking as whatever her name is.
B) That Victor Garber can break out in song in the middle of his law office.
C) That, once again, we're being treated to a San Francisco that has NO GAY PEOPLE IN IT!!!
-
TOD:
I'm very much amazed that no one has mentioned The Muppet Movie.
Who can forget the shot of a super-sized Animal towering over the wild west town?
An! Ni!! MAL!!! AN!!!! NI!!!!! MAL!!!!!!

I watched a batch of FAMILY TIES episodes tonight. In fact, I have only two left in the set!
I was mentioning this afternoon that I didn't think Justine Bateman was very good at this stage of her career. However, she did impress me in one episode that was a spotlight show for her dealing the with death of a beloved aunt. She showed genuine emotion, basically fell apart at the funeral and was very believable and quite moving.

Good evening, all!
As this was my first day off this year, I decided to spend it doing "Hard Labor" at our house in Marietta. So I took my weed wrenches there and, in honor of Arbor Day, pulled up about 60 trees, many with tap roots several feet long.
There are at least that many left to pull up, so I may go back tomorrow to work on it before a birthday lunch with Greg's family.
Boy, I can feel every one of those trees. Ouch!
I think this is also the first physical exercise of the year, too.

Last night I stumbled across GREEN HORNET being shown on the American Life channel, and I stuck around to see the last 5-10 minutes of it. I noticed that a BATMAN episode with Julie Newmar was airing later in the evening, so I had the DVR pick it up. I watched that tonight as a break from FAMILY TIES.
There has been a great clamor for BATMAN on DVD but rights issues between Fox and Warners and DC Comics have prevented its release.
Truth be told, I'd rather have the one season of GREEN HORNET than the three seasons of BATMAN. Though Newmar was typically fetching as Catwoman, the episode itself was pretty lame. I believe this one came from season two.
-
DR TCB, love the new avatar!
-
I noticed BURKE'S LAW was coming on tonight on American Life Channel, so I set the DVR to record it. I'll watch that tomorrow while I'm cooking and eating lunch.
-
And, as mentioned previously, TORCHWOOD was quite wonderful tonight.
Another love story through time episode, very touching, most enjoyable.
-
Oh, that Freddie!
Who is taking care of your critters while you're out of town, MBarnum? Tell Freddie to stay away from the neighbors' garages!
-
DR Matt H - Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I was hoping you would weigh in on this. I feel much better about this and I do believe I will pick up the 32 inch Vizio tomorrow. There are 2 different 32inch Vizios, but Sam's has the one that has PIP and POP in stock. So I'll spend a part of my refund on a new TV and the rest will go to practical things like bills.
Oh what fun!
-
So, this means your garage is now, uh, squeeky clean?
;)
More like, clean of sqeeks!

What a town without pita can do
;D
We don't got no Pita Pit here!
And...we had dinner at the restuarant formerly know as the Grape Leaf Grill. DR Jose has been there in the past. They are a Vietnamese restaurant and they had a dish that I could almost live on---their salmon wrapped in grape leaves over their noodle/salad bowl. We used to always go there if we were in Marietta at dinner time (after we moned that is...)
So, now it has a new name and NO MORE GRAPE LEAVES! I am so disappointed!
We will probably rarely go there now, as it's really just standard Vietnamese food and we can get that in Atlanta. They are cheap, tho---my dinner was under 8 bucks. Ah well...
-
Dog Bosco is staying at my co-workers home. They lost their dog a few months back and wanted to have Bosco for the week...he will be having a blast there, as well as trying on all sorts of clothing styles!
The house sitter will also be doubling as the cat sitter.
-
bk will love it! All that blue!
And our dear Jose likes blue too, as I once read in a blog somewhere...
-
I wish I could figure out how to pack light!
-
I also hope I can figure out how to get to Glendale.
-
Just remember - no matter how wise the purchase, in about a month something better will always come along :D
Better...and cheaper.
-
I wish I could figure out how to pack light!
Well, you have to seal off all the cracks in your suitcase, for one thing. And pack lots of batteries!
-
I also hope I can figure out how to get to Glendale.
It's very easy to get to Glendale. Just do some mapquest printouts before you leave.
We made it there easily (apart from the horrible traffic!) to bk's book signing.

For a brief glimpse of Lauren Bacall and the original cast of Applause from the Tony show that year, see here (http://www.bluegobo.com/video.php?var=10329).
In case anyone is interested that was the late Mark Hellinger Theater and they were in front of the set from Coco

I really don't think I'm going to fit in any BBQ this time due to my latest indulgences.

Could you send me a link to a picture/stats on the model you're going to buy? I just wanted to check out the stats for you just for safety sake. I want you to be sure you're getting the most for your money.

We went to see JUNO Thursday night. A really enjoyable film!
-
Last night we watched the documentary about the Z Channel. It was very interesting, but it could use some snippage. 120 minutes was just too long!
-
In case anyone is interested that was the late Mark Hellinger Theater and they were in front of the set from Coco
I have a special fondness in my heart for the Mark Hellinger Theatre. My first New York show was at the Mark Hellinger (MY FAIR LADY). I saw wonderful things there. I guess SUGAR BABIES was the last show I saw there.
-
We started out watching MONDO MOD. It was really horrible, and not in the good sense.
It was not in the same league as MONDO TEENO, although both movies had cameramen who went on to before quite famous.
-
I am going to cut off all my fingernails now, since I broke several while murdering trees today.
When I return, I will be typing a little better, I hope.
-
Glad to hear that bk's tummy is better!
As far as flat soda, you don't have to wait for them to go flat. Just pour them back and forth between two glasses a few times and that will take out the fizz.
-
Nytol!
-
I'm going to write a little bit, and then I'll head down to bed.
Good night!

TV Reminder:

TORCHWOOD!!!

I'm watching it right now!! :D
It's a sad episode..but very good. :'(
-
And our dear Jose likes blue too, as I once read in a blog somewhere...
Well, I also know just how much bk loves his onion rings. :)
-
Well... I'm sleepy, and I have another 200 people to play for tomorrow.
Goodnight.

My sister had Vizios in her townhouse in Raleigh and they seemed really nice (though they were HUGE).
Yes, Cilla, once you upgrade to digital, you'll have access to several broadcast signals from one provider. Typically you'll have the basic channel (e.g., 2), then the alternates, like 2-1, 2-2, 2-3. Our local PBS station has 4 or 5 signals, though 2 of them usually broadcast the same stuff simultaneously.
-
Had a very nice dinner at Nate 'n' Al's - if anything it was even better than a couple of weeks ago.
-
I then watched Portrait In Black, about which more later.
-
Will we never get to page eleven?
-
I also checked out some of the transfers in the new Stanley Kramer box - definitely improved transfers of Ship Of Fools (finally in its correct ratio), Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, and most importantly Dr. T - the last transfer wasn't too bad, but this is sharper, it's been totally cleaned of dirt, and the color is improved. Plus, there are now extras on all films.
-
So it is written, so it shall be done - page eleven.
-
I like Guess who's coming to dinner...
-
Welcome eight GUESTS!
-
I don't know, call me crazy but didn't we just have about five people here - and they left without so much as a hello or a post? I shall be reviewing the situation.
-
I was just contemplatiung crawling into the bathtub for some ego enhancement....
-
Insane.... Please define?? :)
-
The ones that did not post, I would call lurkers...
-
Does the HD tellys accomdate CC?
My sister's HD TV works fine. I don't know about the BlueRay or HDDVD movies and players, just the TV itself. :)
-
I did read on the FCC site that they were to be CC
-
The tv is a start...
-
I have looked at a few DTVs and osme are quite nice. Any recommendations? Cost will be a wee bit of a factor.
-
Since I do not have cable, will I need to get an additional antenna for it?
-
Too bad MattH is not available to answer questions.
-
I am leaning on the side of getting a coupon for the antennas
-
We went to see JUNO Thursday night. A really enjoyable film!
I really liked this movie, also. But last year, my friend Josh wanted to direct the play, "Juno and the Paycock" by Sean O'Casey (I was cast in the show, also), which was adapted into the musical called "Juno," by Marc Blitzstein. Everytime I hear about the movie "Juno," I think of the musical, "Juno." ;)
-
Anyone familiar with Dynex? Are they good?
-

I have no idea. :-\ My sister found her TV on sale and her boyfriend did some research, so they decided to get it. I don't remember what brand she got.
-
Anyone familiar with Dynex? Are they good?
-
Anyone familiar with Dynex? Are they good?
I've never heard of Dynex. We used to have the Dynix computer system at the library where I work, but I would hope that that's something completely different.

Unlocked, Unlocked, Unlocked.
Yesterday is now today-

Woweee Zoweee! Now that's news that's worth waking up for!
-
This day isn't locked, so I feel empowered writing in it, like I have gone back in time, or altered reality in some way.
-
So I'm going to post, even if nobody reads it!
-
I have been working on an idea for a Closer shoot, because my two producers have to present an idea on Monday and had no ideas that they liked.
They are looking for a song to use like the "Ain't No Sunshine" one they did last year. Of course, that spot was done by the boys' supervisor, who likes to take all the money and glory. She is now convinced that it has to be a song from that era to speak to the Closer's 50 year old woman demo. But I think that is really pigeon-holing their audience.
Anyway, although it's not the "iconic" song they're looking for, I wrote a treatment based on the Madonna song, "Sooner or Later", with lyrics by Sondheim (from DICK TRACY).
Sooner or later you're gonna be mine,
Sooner or later you're gonna be fine.
Baby, it's time that you face it,
I always get my man.
Sooner or later you're gonna decide,
Sooner or later there's nowhere to hide.
Baby, it's time, so why waste it in chatter?
Let's settle the matter.
Baby, you're mine on a platter,
I always get my man.
But if you insist, babe, the challenge delights me.
The more you resist, babe, the more it excites me.
And no one I've kissed, babe, ever fights me again.
If you're on my list, it's just a question of when.
When I get a yen, then baby, Amen.
I'm counting to ten, and then ...
I'm gonna love you like nothing you've known,
I'm gonna love you, and you all alone.
Sooner is better than later but lover,
I'll hover, I'll plan.
This time I'm not only getting, I'm holding my man.

We're limited to just using Brenda, and we can't use the set and she might not even be in LA. Boy, talk about limitations
-
Oh, I forgot to mention...JK Simmons, who plays Brenda's boss, is excellent in JUNO.
-
OK, I'm going to alter reality again, and pop into today!
I assume that Singdaw's Seussian frenzy can be attributed to the Dr. T re-release.
I have to keep an eye out for the next Border's box set coupon!
-
This topic is still unlocked!
-
Let's do the time warp again!
-
I'm ready!
