Good Afternoon!

I'm watching "Le Damnation de Faust" on PBS/WNET/Thirteen/etc., etc., etc.  It's the Robert LePage production that premiered at The Met last Fall. I saw it in person, and, well... I think that once my friend, Patrick Carfizzi, has finished singing, I shall head out for a bit of wintry walk myself.

When you watch a movie in Academy Format do you watch the movie with black/gray bars on the left and right side of the image or so you watch it "formatted to fit widescreen TVs"?

With bars, always, as the artists intended.

Last night I watched HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE; always one of my favorite of Miss Bette Davis' perfomances.

Back from a brisk long jog - gorgeous "me" day outside.  Now listening to Leith Stevens' score to The Interns.

Good Afternoon!

Ah! That was a nice walk. :)

I ended up heading over to Riverbank State Park to take in the great view of the George Washington Bridge, as well as to watch some of the hockey tournament that's going on there this weekend.  I actually had a "WTF?!?" moment when I walked around the ice-skating rink and came across some big piles of snow.  How long has this been hanging around?  Well.. It was the shavings/scrapings from the Zamboni machine.  ;)

Most artists I've known were quite inclined toward bars...sleazy and nice ones.

It has continued raining all afternoon, not constantly but with only a few breaks. We got almost an inch yesterday and today should be the same or a little more. It's certainly helping to erase the deficit in rainfall we had accumulated since the start of the year.

I watched DAMAGES while I ate lunch. Wonderful episode with more surprising revelations, especially whom Ellen has at gunpoint in the flashforward sequence.

Next I put in the first movie in the four film box set: JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR. It's the tritest kind of melodrama: two girls in love with the same man, one girl leaves town, the other girl marries him and gets pregnant, then the other girl comes back, and the husband is tempted to stray.

Definitely not a classic though I thoroughly enjoyed the new score for the film by Donald Sosin. It's got several very beautiful themes.

That movie was only 71 minutes, so I immediately put in the second one in the set: MR. THANK YOU, a slight but delightful little road picture. The title character is a bus driver who is so kind and considerate to everyone that he thanks people who are blocking the road as he passes them. It's basically a 20-mile trip while we get to know a little bit about various passengers. As I said, slight but charming. And there are some beautiful panoramas that are filmed as the bus trundles along the mountain road.

This is the longest of the four movies in the set: 76 minutes.

I didn't start the next one (it's only 66 minutes long), but I'm hoping to finish both of the other films tonight and still have time for BROTHERS & SISTERS.

With the half hour I had left, I continued watching THE BONE COLLECTOR which I had begun last night. As I watched the next few scenes, it came back to me who the killer is. I'll continue to watch the movie to its conclusion because now I'm curious as to motivations which I still don't recall.

Meanwhile... The projected snowfall totals here in NYC keep going up, up, up(!!!!).  Heck, they're even getting snow right now in Richmond.

*And because of the snow in Atlanta, I have a couple of friends who are currently camping out at JFK and LGA. :-\

There was a slight chance for snow in the forecast, but so far it hasn't arrived. In fact, the rain has stopped for the last half hour, too.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  Two round trips from here to Cincinnati in less than 24 hours - whew!  We found FROST/NIXON quite gripping - it was the first non-musical we'd seen at the Aronoff and the first time we'd been there at night.  Today was church, lunch at First Watch with Rob and Mary Linda, and a stroll around the new Container Store.

Singdaw,
For some people the cheap, ready-made readers work fine--it depends largely on your Rx, plus how much you read. Many people have custom reading glasses made because progressives just don't meet all our needs. With a progressive lens you must look through the lowest part your lens to read, which means that your reading material must be virtually in your lap--at least for me.  When I'm on the computer or reading in bed I look through the middle part of my lens, which is intended not for reading, but more "room distance" according to how the progressive is made.  When I had a bifocal it drove me nuts to have to keep jumping over the line. So a progressive plus reading glasses works for me. When I need a new Rx I often get the readers first; if I can't read well with an old progressive it doesn't really bother me. I only buy a new progressive when I need a new distance Rx.

What DR Jeanne said, plus some clarifications to put DR DAW at ease:

My new lenses are progressives and are quite satisfactory for everything but long periods of reading.  Since yesterday, I've determined that reading restaurant menus, theater programs, and the church hymnal/prayer book is fine.  I only have difficulties, as does DR Jeanne, at the computer screen, reading the newspaper, and reading while lying down.  Following in my father's footsteps, I have had a separate pair of Rx reading glasses ever since I started wearing bifocals.  Usually I just have the reading Rx put into the frames I'm replacing, but this time those were unusable, so I'm still using my old readers.  I might take advantage of their offer of $100 off a second pair to get new reading glasses.

I'm watching Room At The Top - haven't seen it before, which is odd since I was a huge fan of Brit films back then and saw mostly everything.
