We have to figure out the get-together - I haven't booked anything until that happens.  Anyone want to take on the planning of it?  It could be Sunday evening, Monday after the signing, or Tuesday evening.
Monday after the signing would be best for der B and myself.  We're going to have to kennel Fletcher anyway, but the others we'd rather not leave for more than the day.

I am trying to imagine DRJOSE walking down the street with a pie in each hand.

Actually, I had one large brown grocery bag in each hand.

The bag in my left had the three loaves of Cinnamon Swirl Bread from the Montana Gold Bakery.  It really is amazing stuff.  The bread part is actually challah!  And the cinnamon swirl is just at the perfect goo of gooeyness.  The bread is great on it's own.  It's great toasted.  But my favorite way to prepare it as French Toast!  YUMMERS!!

Meanwhile, the bag in my right hand had the two pies - Chocolate Pecan and Lattice-Topped Cherry - a cluster of Ukrop's White House Rolls; and a plastic bag filled with a King Size Hershey's Chocolate Bar with Almonds, an individual bottle of Strawberry Quik, a small order of potatoe wedges, and a custard filled, chocolate topped Bismarck (donut).  In other words, my afternoon snack.  NOT!  Well, almost NOT. ;)

Thankfully, the bag from Ukrop's had those handy-dandy handles on it.  The bag from the bakery did not have those handy-dandy handles, so I had to carry that bag in my left arm rather than with my left hand.  -And those three loaves of bread are pretty hearty!

But everything made it back to my apartment in one piece and unopened.  And, again, I was just thankful the rain did not start back up since I have no idea how I would have held my umbrella.

-Just thought I would help clarify your mental picture.  Hope this helped. ;)

Your John Barrowman picture for today.  Here he is with our very own Susan Egan.
Ah, yes, the Los Angeles PIT.

I enjoyed it, but I'm a diehard.  I'm still amazed they took it to NYC.

Hey - we haven't done an apparel check for awhile....what is everyone wearing tonight?

Currently (from my toes on up): White socks (Gold Toe), light blue checked sleep pants (Old Navy - actually I think they call them "sleep bottoms"), gray boxer briefs (Hanes), and a dark blue polo shirt (Ralph Lauren).  However, up until about 30 minutes ago, I had on a pair of black jeans (Old Navy) instead of the pajamas.  Oh, and my black sneakers (New Balance) too.  -I shall elucidate in an upcoming post. :)

I know that I have been errant, and yes, even truant. But this has been an excused absence. I'm right in the middle of that hundred-meter dash you get at the end of the semester when all the term papers are due and the finals are coming up. Believe me, I would much rather be at HHW.

I just wanted to remind everyone that Thanksgiving falls on Gazpacho Soup Day this year. So don't forget to eat gazpacho soup with your Thanksgiving dinner.

I'll see you when finals are over. I'm sure you'll want to hear all about it.

Tonight, as I drove around and about the Newest of Jerseys, I spotted several homes that had their Christmas light up and on.  I'm not talking about just a few tastful electric candlesticks in the front windows or a few strands of light-up icicles.  I'm talking about full-fledged Christmas Wonderlands on front lawns emblazoning the night.

Well, why not?  The stores have been decorated since Halloween and been stocked with holiday stuff since September.  Two Philadelphia radio stations have been playing Christmas music 24/7 since the second week of the month.  Santa has already been lapping kiddies at the less prestigious shopping centers.  So, why shouldn't people have their homes decorated and lights up before Thanksgiving, too?  If the season expands a few weeks, maybe the good spirit of the holidays will extend, too.  And who couldn't use a few extra weeks' worth of goodwill to all?

SWW please stop writing about that ham without a spoiler for me-YUCK!   ;D

Having seen National Treasure I have to say you wrote an excellent review of the movie.  We also enjoyed it and found it a fun, entertaining movie.

Did you have fun at The Incredibles with the Grandlands?

Since the ham has been very well cured, I don't think it will spoil.  Der B has insisted that we use the "boil" method of cooking, which means bringing it to a slow simmer for a certain amount of time per pound.  The simmer has just been reached, the ham will be cooked by about seven this morning.

Spending the day with the grandlads was a mixed bag.  They were pretty well behaved most of the time.  The older lad, Alex (7), got a little antsy early on, wanting to run around the bookstore we dropped into instead of finding a book.  I simply told him that if he didn't settle down we wouldn't see the movie.  He settled down.

When we got into the theater and were watching the movie, he had some concentration issues.  "I don't want to watch this part," he'd tell me.  I'm not sure he understood the idea that a movie has to be watched from start to finish when you're in a theater.    Jumping around on a DVD is a different experience, and not a better one.  Then again, the parts he didn't want to watch involved kissing (understandable for a seven year old) and people arguing, particularly Mom and Dad Incredible.  I'm very unsure about how to broach this subject with his parents, if I should at all.

He's getting the idea that a movie being scary can be a good thing, however.

William (4) was wonderfully well behaved the entire day, other than at the very end when he wanted some ice cream and we just didn't have time to get any.  Sorry, little fella.

Another up-side was my remembering to take the CD soundtrack for Tarzan with us.  They both like that score, and know the songs.  When I handed the CD insert to Alex, pointing out the lyrics, he loved being able to read along with what was being sung.  That CD was our music to and from the theater.

The downside was that we got home very late.  I'll be up forever working on the Thanksgiving sides.

Just taking a break - and a cool-off - from my baking.
I have a deep dished, crumble-topped apple pie in the top oven; four pumpkin pies in the lower oven; the sweet potatoes for the pecan topped casserole on the stove. . .the kitchen is hot, hot, hot!

...And a par-tri-idge in a pear tree!

Bake away, td!

I haven't baked in a while, and I'm hoping I'll be motivated to start baking again once I start rehearsals next week.  Plus, I have a few new cookbooks I've bought over the past couple of months, and I need to give some of the recipes a test drive.

DR td - Did you remember to take the turkey out of the freezer to start defrosting?

As for The Incredibles, I liked it much more than der Brucer did.  He was bothered by the stylization of the characters, which I enjoyed.  He's also the sort who can get totally hung up on poor grammar, punctuation, typos and the like.  If something bothers him, it gets in his way and he won't enjoy a book or movie.

Me, I thought the storyline worked pretty well, as did the characters.  Edna, based on Edith Head, stole the show, of course.  I will want to see it again, on DVD, thanks to my taking a turn for as pee-break escort mid-film, but I love these films and would want it in our collection no matter what.

Question for BK and DR day, what is your favorite version of  A Christmas Carol?

My favorite version of A Christmas Carol is the Alister Sims version (which I don't think is actually titled as "A Christmas Carol"--isn't it "Scrooge" in the opening credits?)  The very close runner-up is Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.  It was my introduction to the Dicken's story, and like DR Elmore has said, I am very attached to the score.

Another animated version that I remember enjoying very much was broadcast for a few years during the 70s on ABC.  The animation was based on the original illustrations and, though it was basically sketchy line drawings with sepia tones for the backgrounds, it was incredibly beautiful.  Someone at TVParty.com remembers it using the voices of Alister Sims and Michael Redgrave, but I don't recall that for sure.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?

At this point, your new neighbors are most likely suspecting that you are some sort of smuggler.

I spent many long months touring with Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra, in which the young Cleo (not played by me) makes a rather wonderful entrance from inside a rug.

Monday after the signing works for me.  I'd have to assume it will be done by nine so we could all meet at Joe Allen between nine-thirty and ten at the big round table in the back.  If they can't accomodate that many, we can always book the upstairs room at former Joe Allen host Angus McIndoe's.

Good Evening!

I ended up heading over to Steve's for dinner.  Originally, he was going to cook, but once I got there, there was nothing on the stove nor in the oven, so we headed over to the newly-opened Cheesecake Factory here in Richmond.  Thankfully, since we came in late - close to 9:00 - our wait was not the typical one hour + Cheesecake Factory wait.  It was Steve's first time at a Cheesecake Factory, and that was a reason for heading there.

The food was good.  Big portions.  Assertive seasoning. Nothing subtle about the meal at all, but, then again, it wasn't supposed to be.  Steve had salmon, I had beef, and we split a slice of their Pumpkin Pecan Cheesecake for dessert.  Now the cheesecake was interesting - and very good.  We both thought it would be a pumpkin cheesecake with some pecans in it.  Nope.  Instead it was a layered affair with a pecan pie layer on the bottom, topped with a layer of pumpkin cheesecake.  And a great big dollop of whipped cream on top and on the side.  Very good.  Very rich.  We were both glad we split a slice.  We both walked out with two very full tummys.

-And I also got a chance to drop off the Cinnamon Swirl loaves.  I bought two for Steve's sister and her two boys - well, three boys if you count her husband.  He'll see her tomorrow at his family's Thanksgiving dinner.  And I bought one loaf for Steve.  -And we'll most be likely having brunch this weekend - cinnamon swirl french toast!

One interesting thing about tonight's experience at The Cheesecake Factory...

There just seemed to be a weird "vibe" with the waitstaff.  Yes, it was packed, but Cheesecake Factory's are generally always packed.  It's hectic.  Lots of people walking around.  Lots of plates in and out of the kitchen.  Well...

They were out of the appetizer we had originally ordered, so our waitress came back to see if we wanted anything else - which we did.  Then one of the managers came by and informed Steve that they were out of the catfish already... so, he ordered the salmon instead.  Well..

Our waitress then came by a few minutes later... Leaned in very close to us, and half-whispered/asked, "Umm.. What's wrong now?  What did she ask you about?"  We explained to her that the kitchen had run out of catfish.  "Oh.. OK.."  -And then off she went to huddle with some of her other waitstaff.  The sense of paranoia was as thick as their white chocolate macadamia nut cheesecake!

Well...  I noticed the woman at the table next to us had to send back her entree since it contained something she was allergic to - something she had told the waitress (a different one) to leave out when she placed the order.  So, she placed another order for something else.  Well, when that order came she started to hand the plate back to the server as soon as it was handed to her - and she was pointing to "it" on the plate again.  She did order something else, but she asked that it be brought in a takeout container at this point.

What struck me as strange was that a manager did not come to the table once during the evening to apologize or even check up on things.  And there were managers walking around left and right - that's part of the Cheesecake Factory's style.  They have managers who walk around with palm pilot type deviced checking on timing, turnover, etc.  I would have thought one of them would have noticed two plates of food being sent back to the kitchen, and one woman at a table of four with no food in front of her while her tablemates ate.  Hmmm...

But then again, it could just be me.  The foibles and fables of being the son of parents in the food service industry.

As for favorite version of A Christmas Carol...

It's a tie between Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol... So many fond memories of growing up in Ledyard, CT, and going to the big Christmas party at the Coast Guard Base in New London - my father was stationed there at the time.  They showed Mr. Magoo each year in the big theatre on base.  And, magically, Santa always had a gift for each of us that was on our Christmas List!

...And Patrick Stewart's solo turn.  One of the most magical and memorable nights in the theatre for me.  I caught him during either his second or third (was there a third) run of A Christmas Carol.  I went up to NYC with a friend of mine, and we both had a wonderful time.  And contrary to what his bodyguard was "warning" everyone about at the stage door after the show, he gladly signed stuff for and acknowledged the Trekkies waiting at the stage door.

The sweet potatoes are glazing away in the oven, and the cranberry relish is cooling.  The pig is still at a slow simmer.
