Here's to *knock on a lot of wood* being the first day of Nudie Musical without any sort of huge crazy problems.

Today's problem was with Equity early on in the day, but we got that ironed out pretty quickly actually and we reached a deal that everyone was happy with - and obviously, the show went on.  :)

Well, last night's rehearsal for "Romeo & Juliet" went well.  It was the first night on the set and we only got through probably the first third of act one...which is what the director expected.  Since I'm not in the second third of act one, I (and about eight or so other actors) got to leave early.  A bunch of us went to a local restaurant for a late dinner (and some had drinks...I just had water).  I didn't take a picture of the food, though.  It's a local restaurant/bar and I had "Jenny's PMS Burrito."  That's what it's called!  It's a very large burrito with the standard rice, beans (I chose pinto), sour cream, tomatoes, and the not-so-standard tofu and it was very tasty.  It was big, but I ate the whole thing.  We sat around and chatted for an hour or so and then I came home.

I'm certain that der B thinks I've got a lot to say about the TOD, but the truth is I usually make rice when I'm sick and tired of potatoes.

That being said, I do make a fairly good risotto.  The trick is to keep stirring.  And to use the right kind of rice (arborio).  And to use really good Parmesan.  The stuff in the green can will never finish off a good risotto.

A staple at the Murphy/Cason/Smith Thanksgiving is a rice-cheese-and broccoli casserole that my mom makes that is probably my absolute favorite.  Cream of broccoli soup, actual broccoli, rice, and cheddar cheese spread over the top.  Amazing.  The one thing I always demand be at the holiday table.

Topic of the Day:  I like rice, but I don't love it.  I like it most when I order it in Mexican restaurants.  As for "dishes" of rice, I'm not really a fan.  But what's weird is that I don't really like rice pudding.  I like the taste of the pudding, but not the texture with the rice in the pudding.  To me, that's just wrong. :P

That's part of the "weird"...I LOVE tapioca pudding.  It's my absolute favorite kind.  And I've even gotten some sugar-free tapioca pudding that I really like, too. :D

It is way too early in the morn to be up, but that's what it'll be like for the rest of the summer, I'm forecasting.  The alarm went off, I looked out the window, and the fireflies were still flashing down towards the branch (small creek) that runs behind the house.  Horny little buggers, I tell you.

Forty-six hours, that's what I'm scheduled for this week.  This is called a part-time job.

Good morning, all! Roday is another half day with the McGlinnventory. After that, I've several choices of a work project, but I may head over to the NYPL and pull some scrapbooks from the Theatre Collection.

I'm happy the reading went well last night, and I'm sure it will be better this evening.

For what it's worth, I like Letterman; he's always had an outrageous sense of humor and I find him very funny.

Last night since i had nothing on tv i watched the first 3 episodes of the new show THE LISTENER.

I know DR MattH mentioned that the premiere did not get good reviews. So i went in not expecting much. I won't say it was great. But it was much much better than those reviewers suggested.

The premise is a guy who can hear what people are thinking. He is a paramedic and him and his friend drive an ambulance.  He basically can hear what people are thinking. And he sort of runs around town helping solve cases.

It was quite interesting. And i will keep watching. Even if NBC cancels it (which i have no idea if they will since it's summer) it is a Canadian show, and i'm sure they will keep airing it here on CTV.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Well...

Since rice is a true staple of the Filipino diet - like it is in many Asian cultures - there was hardly a day - a meal! - where rice was not on the dining room table.  The usual "routine" was to have a fresh pot of steamed rice served with dinner.  Breakfast the following morning would then include leftover rice from the night before - either reheated, or made into fried rice.  Sometimes both! And then any final leftovers were consumed during lunch.

When my grandmother came stateside while we were living in Seattle, she would routinely make us a porridge for breakfast out of the leftover from the night before.  It was basically like a rice pudding, but it was cooked long enough to break the rice down so that final product was very gloppy and gluey.  However, it was made with chocolate.  So... ;)

Like DR Cason, I'm a big fan of the Broccoli-Cheese-Rice Casserole.  I remember trying it for the first time at a cast party during my first year of school in Richmond.  One of the girls in the cast, Michelle Carter, had mentioned that she was going to make her "Mama's Best" recipe for the cast party.  And it truly was "Mama's Best" - I was not disappointed. :)

I slept well last night but not long enough. I woke up at 6:45 and knew I was finished sleeping. So, I got up, read the paper, and then started on those LOST bonus features. I got a lot of the lengthier ones behind me, I think, but there are two "phases" (their word, not mine) of the bonus disc to go, and other than bloopers and deleted scenes, I have no idea what elese is on the bonus disc.

Meanwhile, it's currently 62 degrees - and cloudy (again) - here in NYC.  And it's only supposed to get up in the mid-70s over the next couple of days.  The "cool" summer temps are nice, but some "real" summer temps - and sun! - would be nice too.

My work schedule for the day will be determined by how many bonus features (and their length) are left to peruse. If I can finish up the set this afternoon, I will likely go ahead and watch the next disc in the stack, the Blu-ray of THE SIEGE, tonight.

If LOST takes longer than this afternoon, then I'll simply let that be my work for the day and do THE SIEGE tomorrow.

It's in the low 70s right now, but the air is still and not very pleasant. But this is as mild as we're going to have this week, so the house is opened up and I'm trying to cool it down as best I can.

If I stumble upon them, I report on them, but frankly there's no time to go looking for them, and some are embedded with codes that I would never be able to figure out. There are websites that do a great job of reporting on eggs, and I let those interested in such things go there.

One thing I'm changing and, in fact, have just rewritten, is part of the melody line for the new song Doing Porn.  David asked me to do it after the last reading (basically changing one phrase) because each of the first three musical lines is a descending series of notes - I actually sort of changed it, but then David said he couldn't get the first tune out of his head, so we left it alone.  But hearing it last night, that many descending notes sucks the energy out of the tune and they lyric gets lost.  So, for the first of the two descending lines instead of the final note being the lowest we go up on that one, which punches the final word of the first two lines, and then the third line now rises instead of descends, which gives the song much more oomph.  Unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to put it in for tonight, although I'm thinking about e-mailing it to everyone and seeing if they can assimilate it by this evening.

Good Morning

I will be on my way to the airport in a couple of hours.  I wish that I was able to fly out of Burbank instead of LAX. But could not get any flights that would have worked out.

I enjoyed the Nudie for the most part and there were some of the same issues that BL had.

I took a lot of notes so I could remember what was what and the new songs are a best guess title as they were not listed in the program.

I also wish the ensemble was indentified with the roles they played as I thought and my two friends who came with me also thought some of them really stood out.

I am glad that BK did not post the name of the song and I will respect that and won't mention it in my comments

I will try to post them later tonight depending how tired I am after the flight.

Special effects makeup artist Dick Smith will be honored

Protege Rick Baker will host the celebration at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
By Susan King
June 16, 2009

Dick Smith brought the devil out of Linda Blair, transformed Marlon Brando into a jowly Mafia don and punked out Robert De Niro with a startling Mohawk. So what's next for the 86-year-old special effects makeup artist? How about a tribute from his friends and colleagues?

Smith's innovative work on " The Exorcist," " The Godfather," "Taxi Driver" and "Amadeus" (for which he won an Oscar) among others has had a huge influence on the field. "The state of the art of makeup effects wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Dick," says six-time Oscar-winner and Smith protege Rick Baker. "He's an extremely inventive guy who came up with a lot of techniques and materials we use today."

Baker ("An American Werewolf in London") will host the Wednesday celebration of Smith's work at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater, which will feature film clips, discussions with such makeup artists as Kazuhiro Tsuji ( "Angels & Demons"), Greg Cannom ( "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Mike Elizalde ("Hellboy"), as well as actors Blair and Hal Holbrook, each of whom have been subject to Smith's transformations. Smith too is scheduled to speak.

Perhaps his greatest contribution, says Baker, was his willingness to share information with other artists.

Does it say Ship in the book or Skip???  He's had worse typos, someone once inadvertently typed Kennon as Kennedy in a very good review.

We have had positive responses from 2/3 of our cast, and I await the rest.  It's a good cast with a nice mix of experienced people and some new people.  So we shall see.

My leads are ALL very strong - which helps, of course.

And of course a week from now, I could be complaining about those same people.

If the people in line knew about the SHOW GIRL release, and it was only mentioned on HHW, were they DR's or were they Lurkers?  Or what's the story?

It is nice that I don't have to go anywhere today.  I am working on my rehearsal schedule (around summer camp, vacations, and just "not available").....and dividing the full script up into nice scenes for rehearsal purposes.

Reading the acknowledgements is a recommended technique for aspiring writers in search of a literary agent or editor.  Many writers' guides suggest, especially, reading such in books similar to the aspirant's - the assumption being that someone interested in a certain type of writing is on the lookout for new talent.

I, though, read the acknowledgements to see how an author thanks the librarians.

See you all on the other side of the country.

PS  The writing projects that I also came to LA just might work out for some retooling. There is a new cable network wanting to produce more originally project

And another friend wants to try to revive a script we started on 20 years ago. We went to his storage room and he had a file of all the notes and some early drafts.

When it rains it pours

Keeping my fingers crossed

Good luck, Michael!!

I watched last night's RAISING THE BAR while I ate lunch. An OK episode but nothing more. I hope the scripts get a little better. The cases weren't all that interesting, and with all the women chasing men on the show, that gets mundane, too.

I then finished the remaining bonuses on LOST. They took about an hour to get through. Thankfully, that is all behind me now. The review was finished and posted, so everything right now in the stack is movies only, no TV box sets (though I was expecting BURN NOTICE, season 2 in Blu-ray to review, and it didn't arrive.)

Then, I watched THE SIEGE. I was simply going to scope out what was on the disc, and then I saw that it had only a trailer with it; no other bonuses. So I went ahead and watched it.

I got the feeling this disc was prepared a long time ago for release and then held back for some reason. Fox used MPEG-2 to compress the video and there was a fair amount of DNR applied to the image. Also, color timing was all over the map. The sound was very strong with DTS-HA MA 5.1 which was the best thing about the disc.

The movie was fine for about the first half and then kind of falls apart in the second half.

I think the digital switchover has done something to Time Warner here. The cable box has reset my automatic choices (so AS THE WORLD TURNS didn't record today as it should have), and certain sections of the site won't load today (HD Showcase On Demand). Only page 4?  Slow day here.  Well, it's a slow day over here, too.  The sun just doesn't want to come out (perhaps tomorrow - thought I'd better take care of that now ;P )  Although, I did replace 3 sprinkler heads and now the sprinklers are sprinkling right as rain.  Yesterday, the DP and I headed over to Berkeley to a bakery, which turned out to be lovely and tasted sorta bland.  We did, however, get to Amoeba where I picked up 6 albums.  When I transfer them to CD, I'd be happy to share as they are quite cool finds.  More about this later.

Does anyone here use a Kindle?  And my question here is that if I'm laying on the beach in Mexico and I need the next book in a series, will I be able to purchase and download the book to my Kindle while in a foreign country?

DR Matthew - Here's some info form Squidoo (http://www.squidoo.com/AmazonKindleReview):

11) Shhhh, don't tell anyone! Kindle connects free to Whisper (Sprint's EV-DO 3G network). In some areas Whisper isn't available, so the Kindle will get you connected via a second protocol called 1xRTT. This is good news for you because the adding of 1xRTT increases the number of areas where you get wireless access. Yippee!

That doesn't mention anything about overseas access, but I just posted the question on Twitter, so I'll probably have a better answer momentarily. ;)

Yay! Tonight's the table-turning episode of THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY. It's the weakest set of the REAL HOUSEWIVES OF franchise, although the tie for sleaziest skank in the franchise seems to run between the tone-deaf blonde who wants to be a country singer in Atlanta and the 40+ year-old New Jersey cougar with the criminal background and the nearly-lesbian attachment to another of the housewives. All hell should break loose tonight, so that will be fun.

I took off from work this afternoon thinking I could pick up the death certificates and then close my dad's checking account and cash the rest of the checks that have come to his apartment.  Noooooooooooo, California has a 40/45 day hold on everything.  Can't sell the car (the neighbors are complaining it's still parked there) can't access any money (I've already paid out over $700.00 of my own to cover 2 months worth of bills he did not pay) and now I have to wait.  I'm ready to say f--- it all.  I'm working my a-- off cleaning out his apartment and then I have to pay someone to haul it all away.  This just seems so unfair. And then the bank tells me power of attorney and a will mean nothing.  That's the same thing the hospital said.  What's the point of having either.  At least I have a box of ashes.  Neptune Society is $800.00 for a passanger ticket for the boat.

DR Sam - A hold? Why would they place a hold on a deceased's account? I hope things get resolved sooner rather than later.

*At least you get to see the reading of Nudie again tonight.

I'll be happy again when I get home.

OH!

So...

It turns out my two new roommates first met each other while waiting "in line" to look at another apartment.  Apparently, the woman showing the apartment took such a long time coming down to the front door to let them in, that they struck up a conversation.  And while they were conversing, they both realized they were enrolled at the same college, MBCC - Manhattan Borough Community College.  And they're in the same program track.  -So, they started to look for a place together.  Funny how that worked out.

*And, this could either be a curse or a blessing, but one of them works at Magnolia Bakery.  -And since Magnolia doesn't sell "day old" cupcakes, well... You can figure out the rest.  ;)

Shall I bring the Riunite and potato chips?

The answer an hour ago, when I started cleaning the kitchen and getting ready for tomorrow, would have been yes, but I just saw your question and I'm no longer dressed for company. I have to be up at 6:30 so as soon as the program ends, I'm passing out.

I'm also so congested with gunk from the filth and dust in the McGlinn cartons that I cannot stop wheezing or speaking hoarsely.

No worries, DR elmore.  -If you're not doing so already, be sure to take a shower before you go to bed.  You need to rinse off all the "filth and dust" so that it doesn't end up getting transferred to your bed linens and pillowcases.  Some of the best advice I ever got from my allergist.

Have you found anything good yet, Elmore?

In a gospel arrangement or in the McGlinnventory? Yes to both.

So much of the McGlinn finds are so sad; it's amazing how he burned his way through money and tragic how his mental blocks and rigidity destroyed what was a prestigious career. He wasn't talented enough to have a brilliant career, but he could have had a good one if his madness hadn't made him so impossible to work with. One of the last things I said to him in 2002 before we stopped communicating was "you need to know which battles to lose so you can win the important ones" but he never would concede on silly things and as a result we lost recordings of things because he inssited it be complete on two discs when the company only wanted one, like THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE I found a schedule from Naxos for a whole series of recordings beginning with BABES IN TOYLAND, and it all fell through in 2001 because his madness took over and suddenly he and the head of Naxos Records weren't speaking. Today I ran across his contract with the Packard Humanities Institue so I know what he was making and his severance. And he ran through it immediately on all the music, books, etc lining his walls, and he died in total poverty. Really sad.

Sam, I too went through much of what you're experiencing--and my dad and I had a living trust, which theoretically should have prevented it. Thankfully, we put my name on most of his accounts ahead of time. But it still wasn't easy.

As for your dad's car, I have it on good authority that the DMV will usually let the sale go through, without the waiting period.

I had a blissful night of watching just whatever I wanted to watch.

I began by watching YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN on Blu-ray. I hadn't seen the movie in years. At the time I first saw it, I thought it was one of the most brilliant comedies I'd ever seen. Now, some of it works and some of it is painfully slow and, I guess from seeing Mel Brooks use the same set-ups and jokes in movie after movie, not all that funny any more.

But the cast is absolutely brilliant, impossible to better.

The Blu-ray is acceptable, maybe a little more, but not exceptional which was something of a disappointment.

I don't mind the moonlight swims, it's the loopy lady that hurts

I've been home for an hour, trying to put all the boxes I've brought home out of the way.  I tend to trip on things in the dark.  Now have a somewhat pathway to navigate which is ok.

I had a great time again tonight.  The show moves so fast.  I think the actors were great, I never took my eyes or ears away from their faces or the stage.

I should have taken pictures, but I'm still stuck on a film camera that's 30 years old and really only works well with natural outdoor sunlight.  Which is what it was made for, anyone remember family vacations, the kind you had to always pose for pictures and then endure the showing of slides and movies when it was over.  That kind of camera.

So not to embarrass myself or anyone else with the big flash, I just went home.

But I'm still happy. ;D ;D ;D

I always forget what fun it is to see live performances.

I must go more often, especially since it's only a 10 minuet drive to NoHo.

Tonight's R&J rehearsal went well...if slow. ::) We started from where we left off last night, got to where our intermission is, then started at the very beginning of the show.  We didn't get all the way through the act the second time but at least we stopped on time...which is why we didn't get all the way through the act.

Back from our second performance.  Another interesting show, but I think you all know me well enough to know that "interesting" doesn't interest me at all.  Yes, there were a lot of big laughs tonight (we had a really oversold house - people sitting in the aisles and everywhere else), but so much of the show, at least for me, didn't land because we just never had time to finesse, and I never had one minute to work with the actors, and so the performances were all over the place.  The leading man was better tonight, but still just wrong for the role and so the show doesn't have its motor.  Some people I've worked with before just turned in tired performances and I wasn't so happy about it.  I adore Niki, who just gives 130% always.  Now that we're done, I can say that the majority of our ensemble were just people I would NEVER work with again - no energy, no commitment, only caring about how many hours they'd worked and if they could get us in trouble with Equity - they tried, but, oops, sorry, it didn't work.  Two of them were actually counting up their hours (from their point of view) after the show, because they didn't think their check was for enough money.  Mind you, we have a professional Equity stage manager who knows his stuff and who wrote down exactly when they worked, so I kind of trust that he sent me the right figures.  Of course, they're conveniently forgetting the fact that not one of those making trouble were EVER on time - one was three hours late to Saturday's rehearsal.  If they persist, I will file a report with Equity.  This does not include the gal who played Joy Full and does not include the one male ensemble member who was an Adam guy.  I've just never seen such lack of energy in my life, even with mics on the stage you could barely hear them, and they simply looked bored most of the time, hence many things just sat there like so much fish.  The slam dunks were Rosie, Dick Davis, George Brenner, and Joy Full - those four I would work with anytime and anywhere.  Others did okay, but were not at a performance level I found acceptable - they got it done, but in one particular case, after four fantastically funny days of rehearsal, I was presented with a performance that had half the energy, no pace, and only occasional sparks and fun - that performer has the capacity to be brilliant but I really now have to think about whether it will go further than this reading in terms of this performer going on with the show.  In hindsight, I wish I hadn't done this reading until I could have cast it exactly the way I wanted to, with a cast that was fully committed to the task at hand and not there to count their hours and kill some time.  I guess performers nowadays simply don't look at the big picture anymore, the big picture being that I work all the time, I use singer/performers all the time, and, more importantly, so does my choreographer, who loathed the work ethic he saw, for the reasons stated above.

I shall now write some notes.

That's too bad about the performers, BK.  I've worked with some dolts before, too (just not a professional level...me, not being a professional), but hopefully as far as the show itself is concerned, you got out of it what you needed. :)

...with a cast that was fully committed to the task at hand and not there to count their hours and kill some time...

Sadly, it may be that those days are over.

I will say that over the years here in little old Olympia, I have worked with some amateur actors who are absolutely professional caliber, not only in their talent, but their work ethic, also.

And now, I really must get to bed.  I'll have to wait until I get up to read BK's notes.

Good night, all.
