RIP DIXIE CARTER

The Designing Women star passes at the age of 70.

It is a shame she was never nominated for an Emmy award for her role of Julia Sugarbaker. She was brilliant in deliver the dialogue that was written for her mainly by Linda Bloodworth-Thomason

I am very pleased and excited that MR BK and DR CP will be traveling to Indiana to see BRAINEX this coming Friday.

I am so also glad that MR BK switched his hotel to the More Convenient One!  He will be on the west side of Indianapolis, and so he will have to tell a West Side Story when he is in town.

My friends former DR Evil Kurt and our friend Adrienne R. will be joining me when we dine with BK & CP and then see the show at the Buck Creek Players.

There will be photos.

And today....yes today.....I will be seeing the BRAINEX matinee with my friend Bryan - who is artistic director of the Phoenix Theatre in Indy....he says they are showing SCI FI movie previews beginning at 2 o'clock, so we will certainly be in attendance for that....so my guess is that they will be showing them on Friday beginning at 7:30.

This is the week.....yes, Messala, this is the week.

Good morning, all!  I slept later than I intended, first awakened by the ass above me around 5:40 am (I checked the clock) and after that, having a dream about visiting the neighbors who lived next to us at 3005 Goldman. We lived at 3003; my dad built the house between 1947 and 1950, when we moved into it. In 1980, he sold the house to my brother Randy, who lived there until he moved around 1997. In my dream, I visited Jack Tilton, whose wife died shortly after my mother, and saw his two children Susan and Mark. Part of the dream involved my looking for food and talking about my late father. The Tiltons were a nice family, and I have no idea what dredged up those memories.

Dixie Carter was a lady I had always wanted to meet when I was working at the Drama Book Shop. She and her husband were friendly with the owners, but our paths never crossed. I think the first thing I ever saw her do was the 1976(?) revival of PAL JOEY at Circle In The Square; she played the caustic reporter Melba who sings "Zip." She was wonderful.

Today, I have to finish the Montgomery & Stone work for the copyists and write a new drum part and vocal part for the piece. I may do laundry, although I am tempted to let it go until tomorrow, and I'll watch more of Season Two of BONES.

My allergies are still in an uproar. That is all.

My introduction to Dixie Carter was a CLO production of  A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in which she played Desiree.  She was divine.  The production around her was not. . .(the entire chorus and corps de ballet was used as the quintet of singers).

Will you tell him about all the errors if asked?

Still very chilly here in the mornings making for a very cool (almost cold) walk. I did wear a thin sweatshirt, so that helped a little. TOmorrow promises to be a bit warmer in the mornings which will be nice if I'm going to wear shorts for the walk.

I still have the SPARTACUS episode from Friday night on the DVR and now two movies: I LOVE YOU, MAN and GRAN TORINO.

I'll probably go to HD Showcase on Demand and watch last week's NCIS: LA episode while I eat lunch. SPARTACUS is just so violent that it doesn't do much for the appetite to watch it.

I've only seen a few DESIGNING WOMEN episodes, but I always enjoyed them. Excellent ensemble cast and good writing. I never thought it was quite as good as MURPHY BROWN (on during mainly the same years and on the same network), but I did find it funny.

Those were the years when I was balancing teaching, writing reviews, and doing theater, so I watched very little TV back then (if you can believe that)!

Thank you for Page 2, DR Matt H! BONES has become my new obsession, and I think the Gravedigger episode is so wonderful, like the Christmas one in Season One, becauses it showcases the good performances of the rest of the cast. By the time Bones and Hodgins are buried alive, you're really rooting for him and Angela.

A wonderful librettist I know in town, with several prestigious credits, has been with his partner for the past 30 years.  I knew the partner through The Drama Book Shop and we finally decided the three o us should go out so I could meet his partner. One December night around 1982, as we were waiting for a 79th Street crosstown bus at Lexington Avenue, I said to the librettist, "wrap up your neck with that scarf, it's freezing." The next day his partner called me and asked if the scars had embarrassed me and I said, what scars? And so I got the story from the partner:

The librettist had been pursuing my friend, who wanted to remain only friends with the librettist. One night, the librettist brought home a stranger who, early in the morning, took a kitchen knife and viciously attacked the sleeping man, stabbing him all over the chest and neck. If the door to the apartment had been locked, the emergency crew could not have saved him. My friend shortly afterward went to the librettist's apartment to get things for the librettist's hospital stay, found the place covered in dried blood, and told the librettist he would never enter the apartment again but move in with him. They're still together.

I've simplified the tale here and i'm not mentioning names, but it's very similar to the story on BONES of Angela and Hodgins and I suspect it's the prome reason the episode has such resonance for me.

The laundry is in the dryers and I am very happy about my sudden burst of energy. I think I will go to market now.

I loved "Designing Women" until Delta Burke left the cast.

Left, as if it were her idea to do so? ;)

Sometimes the ranting was a bit much ;D

This show reached its zenith during the Reagan years.  So few voices were out there balancing out the right-wing extremist equation.  Bloodworth-Thomason's was nearly a voice crying out in a wilderness.

Most of "Designing Women's" rants were topical and bi-partisan.  One addressed a New York Times article that suggested that southerners were educationally deficient and ate dirt.  That article was typical in the serious decline of objective reporting going on throughout the United States.  The idiosyncratic behavior of a small group of people was being applied as a stereotype applicable to all southerners.

Another episode tackled a sidewalk news stand selling magazines with pornographic images...a topic that should have been right up any right-winger's alley.

The characters in "Designing Women" are among the most well-defined any show has ever produced.  The storylines would dwell on serious issues and ridiculous ones, none as ridiculous -- or endearing -- as those in which Delta Burke's "Suzanne" went around town with her pig Noelle on a leash and wearing some bit of fashion to complement Suzanne's outfits.

Suzanne Sugarbaker was the show's life blood, IMO.  It truly represented who Linda Bloodworth-Thomason wanted to be, and Julia Sugarbaker was closer to who she actually was.  Both characters bear resemblances to their creator.  When Delta Burke left the show, it never truly recovered.

There was nothing "hack" about any of the writing...ever.   It also featured a black character -- the wonderful "Anthony Bouvier" -- who started working as a delivery man and worked his way into a partnership with these four southern women.  These four women would get Anthony all caught up in women's discussions, thus providing a reverse situation that many women have complained about for years -- inappropriate discussions in the workplace.   Anthony's unique and unusual relationship with Suzanne was one of the great joys of watching this series.

The show advocated advanced citizenship for those with a broad outlook on life and personal responsibility, and it was never mean-spirited or bilious in its attacks on political issues...EXCEPT in the matter of AIDS and research and attitudes about the disease and those who have it.   This during those years when the disease was epidemic and the most that was done was naming Michael Jordan  Magic Johnson to head up a commission that essentially did nothing other than say, "All right!  See!  We do recognize a problem!"

It certainly wasn't for everyone, but it succeeded in touching many people in many areas where its messages were unheard on the streets and in neighborhoods across America where politics were either Republican or Democratic.

As further evidence of its balanced approach to serious issues, it had its way with the Clarence Thomas-Anita Hill investigation in Congress.  One of the characters wore a T-Shirt that declared "She Lied" and another wore a sweatshirt stating "He did it!"

As one who believed Hill over Thomas, I thought the show should have taken a position in her favor.  I'm certain those who believed in Thomas felt the opposite.  That's why I loved the show.  It celebrated our differences without dividing us.

Dixie Carter was a wonderful actress in a brilliant ensemble in one of the best TV comedies ever aired.  I don't believe the show ever got an Emmy nomination for best comedy, but I could be mistaken.

Then I spent the rest of my afternoon with RIDE WITH THE DEVIL. It's a very good film dealing the the Missouri-Kansas skermishes during the Civil War. A cast of simply brilliant young actors in these roles: Toby Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Simon Baker, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Jeffrey Wright, Mark Ruffalo, Jim Caviezel. And there are some veterans in the cast like Tom Wilkinson and Margo Martindale, too, but the young guys (and Jewel as the love interest) are the real focuses of the attention.

I don't ever remember a Civil War film dealing with this aspect of the war: the Bushwhackers versus the Jayhawkers, but it certainly held my attention for 2 1/2 hours. This is the director's cut; all of the footage Lee cut for the theatrical release was put back in which is why it runs longer than the original release version.

I sampled about 15 minutes of each of the two commentaries. The director and screenwriter share one commentary; the cinematographer, the production designer, and the sound designer share the other. Both are interesting since they focus on different aspects of the production.

I also watched RIDE WITH THE DEVIL this afternoon and I did enjoy it.

However, I don't think that they needed to reinstate the 14 minutes that was cut from the theatrical release.

In its current version, it is a bit long.

Still chilly out.  We're finishing addressing (just another ten minutes or so) and then we'll do postage and then grab something to eat.  Tonight's dinner has been canceled, which is actually for the better.

Was dinner cancelled because of your comments about the book?

Troublemakers, whomever they are, should really learn to get a life and stop lurking here.  But I suppose it gives them great joy to do their thing, so in that way we provide a service for these dunderheads.  And, should this particular troublemaker be reading the board today - you can kiss my ASS.

Yep.  But it all seems fine now and I didn't really want to eat too much this evening, so it's fine.  If raising the red flag about the errors results in getting errors fixed, then it's all for the best.  That this person takes such delight in causing this sort of problem (and was unsuccessful in so doing), then this person should seek some sort of therapy.  In the meantime, they can kiss my ASS.

Back from the San Fernando valley.

It is a lovely theater space - and technically the show is quite interesting....set wise, etc...a few missed cues here and there.

A couple of casting choices that seemed off to me.....one nearly fatal.....but the music sounded great and most of the jokes landed....one acting choice killed a big plot point....but then again.

MR BK - you have two COMPED tickets reserved in your name.  Scott R. says he hasn't told many people you are coming and asked if you would like to be introduced from the audience or otherwise singled out.....I told him I didn't think so, but just Facebook him if you have any concerns.

Very nice guy.  Just remember you are in Indiana......

Hmmm, who knew?  And no, I don't think anyone sending what I wrote to Mr. BIG was doing it for any other reasons than to cause trouble.  The funny thing is that I was going to have what would have amounted to a conversation with the editor of the book and I would have said exactly what I said in exactly the same words - having reread those words, there was nothing horrible in them - they were about specific things like mistakes.  I made it very clear that I enjoyed the style and the storytelling, especially the early years.  And I recommend the book to anyone who loves that period and Mr. BIG.  But the errors need to be fixed so that it can be the book that I know its author would want out in the world - that's not changing content, it's just being a meticulous proofer.

???

Michael Jordan has never had AIDS.

And I guess I should clarify: Magic Johnson is HIV+.  His condition - at least according to "public knowledge" - has not developed into full blown AIDS.  Additionally, Magic Johnson did join the National Commission on AIDS, but he left the commission after a couple of months since he felt that the commission was not doing enough work.  However, he did found his own foundation/charity shortly after he announced that he was diagnosed with HIV, and the Magic Johnson Foundation (http://www.magicjohnson.com/index.php?/foundation/) is still working to combat the spread and stigma of AIDS today.

One evening, after attending a performance of PROMISES, PROMISES; he was asked how he liked the show.  After saying several nice things about Sean Hayes; he then added, "I liked Chenoweth mostly in her guitar folksie song."

I should probably get back to my Bollywood horror film, ROKKK (2010). A ghostly story of a woman accused of two murders actually, or seemingly, perpetrated by an evil spirit.

Not a bad film and it has made me jump a few times. It stars Shaad Randhawa who is the son of two of my favorite yesteryear Bollywood performers, Malika and Randhawa. My only gripe with the movie is that there there are no songs/dances  >:(

I always thought there were moments of inspired lunacy on "Designing Women," but it usually involved Alice Ghostley being Alice Ghostley rather than any of the political stuff.

She won one or two Emmy's for her role.

I found one nomination for her role on the show, but I found no evidence that she won an Emmy for it.

DR Ron Pulliam - In the spirit of "name checking", I believe you meant to indicate "Magic Johnson", not "Michael Jordan".

Michael Jordan had AIDS, not Magic Johnson.  I don't know who led the commission.

Magic Johnson was HIV positive. I don't believe it has developed into full blown AIDS. To my knowledge Michael Jordan does not have AIDS.

I should go back & delete my post ;)

I had no idea so many people would correct your mistake. I saw an error; I commented before I read any further .

Anyway, after I watched last night's CASTLE rerun, I watched I LOVE YOU, MAN. An OK buddy comedy; there were a few genuinely funny moments, and there were some running gags that paid off pretty well, too.

Not a great comedy by any means, but I'm glad I saw it.

In sad, news, my beloved Aunt Betty passed Saturday morning.  She was the sweetest woman I believe I've ever met.  She would have been 90 this October 6--yes, she was born on my birthday, and we were both left-handed.  In an unbelievable synchronicity there was another Uncle in our family who had been born on October 6 and was left-handed.  Aunt Betty told me years ago that should I ever meet anyone else born on October 6 and they turned out to be right-handed I should inform them that that was incorrect.  :)

The Brimms had the coolest Iowa farmhouse that I stayed at several summers growing up.  It was really a Tom Sawyer time for me--I remember biking down to the Cedar River (I think that's its name) to fish with my cousin Bob.  And they had a HUGE treehouse insanely high in a gigantic tree in their backyard that we camped out in.

We saw Aunt Betty a few years ago when we were summering in Wisconsin and took a little side trip to Iowa.  Gabe was probably 4 or so and Zach was 2.  She was still sharp as a tack, though was starting to find it harder to get around.  She also kind of shocked me with several kind of racy anecdotes about my mother, her older sister.  ;)

One of the summers I was back there Uncle Paul was giving exams to some of his graduating teachers and they needed to "teach" a course to a volunteer student, so Paul volunteered me.  That's where I learned to write a check (LOL) and also that in Iowa evidently "w" is sometimes considered a vowel.  (The teacher had a little list with blanks where I was supposed to stick in vowels, and there was a blank left over.  I knew about "y" sometimes being a vowel, but in Utah "w" is never a vowel ;) ).

Happily, those who have been banned have been banned - and they, too, can kiss my ASS.

Was it the same banned ASS I am thinking of?

One can't be certain, but I'm having a hard time thinking of who else it might have been.  Whoever it was can, of course, kiss my ASS.

Just to play the Non-Devil's Advocate, is it possible that the lurker just wanted to inform Mr. BIG that there were errors in his book without any real intention of causing trouble for you and/or Mr. BIG?

You also mentioned that mentions here on HHW don't show up on Google, well... I think they do.  I know that I've used Google in order to track down past posts since the Search function here on this board doesn't seem to work all the time.  Additionally, it's also possible for someone to set up Google Alerts (http://www.google.com/alerts) for themselves or someone else.

The thing I was wondering was who would even have Mr. Big's email address to notify him so quickly.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes to by mother! We had a great day, fried chicken at the Gingham in with my parents, brother and sister in law and friend Gretchen.  They brought my mom a pyramid of thin mints with a candle on top and gave us each ice cream sundaes.  (they don't serve cake)

After lunch, we went to my parents' place at the lake and I helped mom get out the outside stuff that has been in storage all winter.  It took us a while, but she would have done it all herself if I hadn't been there, so I was glad to do it.

The weather was great today and she was SOOO happy to have it all done.  Tomorrow her friends are throwing a luncheon party for her, so she's very pleased

I just caught up with Thursday's episode of FLASHFOWARD and am back to liking it.  This week's episode was involving, suspenseful and surprising.  The character trait which I loathed in the previous episode was diluted just enough with a "Three Years Before The Blackout" scene, which softened the hardness of that particular character's arc.  And, what a nice twist ending!

If you really wish to stop this troublemaker, then go ahead and password protect the whole site, and that would also "prevent" it from being fully indexed on Google.

And just how much "trouble" did this "troublemaker" cause this time? You've already said it yourself, that if getting that information to Mr. BIG causes future print runs of the book to get corrected, then that's all for the better.

"Little sleep overnight as I gear up for a weekend’s worry about what it’s going to be like to taste this KFC “Double Down” sandwich the fried chicken company is releasing on Monday.

The sandwich contains no bread. Instead, two deep-fried boneless white-meat chicken filets act in bread’s place. They contain a sandwich of bacon and melted cheese between them, with a splat of a mayonnaise product called Colonel’s Sauce to moisten the whole.

Lettuce? Tomato? Come on. The Double Down is a sandwich, not a salad. There is no lettuce on it. There is no tomato...."

Not worth arguing about.  If you don't get what happened I cannot help you.  Do you think some stranger showed up out of the blue, paid a visit to the board just in time to see a post, and then sent it along?  I know better.  The board is protected only by the ability to ban troublemakers.  That is all we can do on this board.  I cannot stop people from lurking nor would I want to, as I know some of our lurkers and they are very nice folks.  Just how much trouble does a troublemaker have to cause before you stop calling people paranoid?  Really.  The INTENTION was to cause trouble.  It initially certainly caused a little hiccup, but all is well now, so the intention was not successful.  I continue to be baffled but that's the way it is.

I brought it up because it was irritating and I felt like bringing it up.  How's that for a reason?  And we hadn't had a good day of kiss my ASS in quite some time - since the last time, actually.

I think you meant to type:

"And we hadn't had a good day of kiss MY ass in quite some time..."

No I would never emphasize that way - it's not comical.  So, the emphasis is all yours, baby.

I ate some pasta/egg thing for lunch, which wasn't all that much food.  That was my only meal, so I felt I could afford one serving of a Ben and Jerry's ice cream - I'd really wanted to try their new Everything But flavor and so I did.  Boy is it good.  Vanilla, chocolate, almonds, fudge chips, peanut butter cups, heath bars - a veritable whirlwind of flavors bursting in the mouth.

That's not a "new" flavor.  Trust me.  I know my Ben & Jerry's.  :)

*Although, "Everything But The..." has changed over the years.  It was originally a combination of "New York Super Fudge Chunk" and their "Heath Bar Crunch" (I think I'm remembering that correctly).  However, peanut butter cups were soon added to the mix.  -And for the better too. :)

I'm relaxing at the computer and I think I'll take a shower in a little while.  Meanwhile, I'm going to turn on the laptop and do updates - haven't even had it on in over four months, but since I'll be taking it with me, I may as well have all the updates done.

I guess they come and go in terms of what they actually sell in supermarkets.  But I loved this flavor - and one serving is perfect.

Just reading the reports of an ongoing fire in NYC's Chinatown. A 6-story building... 6 alarm fire...  :-\

BK, there was a big article in today's Oregonian that I5 by Olympia will be "a parking lot" (the newspaper's words) on the weekends for the next 5-6 weeks due to having 3 lanes in each direction closed simultaneously.  So you should plan your trip from SeaTac accordingly.

What are the options?  I'm coming in on a Friday morning and leaving Saturday morning.

If you come in on Friday morning/afternoon, there shouldn't be any trouble either day.  The weekend of May 7-8, only the southbound lanes will be closed and you should arrive and be in Olympia before 7:00...right?

Here are the closures for May 7-8:

Lakewood/Tacoma southbound - Extended Triple Lane Closure (7 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday)

OH! And there was a MAJOR OS update that came out two weeks ago.  It will take a while.

BK --Just want to tell you how much I love The Steven Sondheim Album!  I bought it for Brent's song: "Make The Most of Your Music," which is wonderful, but I've come to love so many others.  Whenever I need a laugh I just listen to Dame Edna's "Losing My Mind."  And Norm Lewis is just so great on "With So Little to Be Sure Of/Who Could Be Blue"---I've listened to it over and over!  Those are just a few examples-the whole CD is terrific!

Thanks much.  That one was fun all the way around, I must say.  Dame Edna is priceless and was my best decision on the album.

I agree!

Yes, I totally had my "MJs" mixed up..."Magic"...not "Michael"..."Johnson"...not "Jordan" or "Jackson".

bk - Then just name the NAME.  All you're doing by not naming them is protecting their anonymity and enforcing(?) their cowardice.

Name the name?  Do you think there's more than one choice?  I'm just letting my mind go to the obvious place because frankly it is inconceivable that it was anyone else.  I don't wish to dignify the behavior further, and you should understand that, I should think.

I do.  So why did you bring it up in the first place?

I brought it up because it was irritating and I felt like bringing it up.  How's that for a reason?  And we hadn't had a good day of kiss my ASS in quite some time - since the last time, actually.

I guess no rain here for tomorrow.

Here's our weather forecast for tomorrow from Accuweather.com:

SUSTAINED 20-FOOT WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH GUSTING TO 35 MPH ARE POSSIBLE ACROSS MARICOPA AND NORTHWEST PINAL COUNTIES...INCLUDING THE PHOENIX AREA...LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND INTO THE EARLY EVENING. What would even be the point to charge for the bathroom on a plane?  Does it cost the airline extra per flush?

It's a way to make money for the airline, DR Jennifer.

Did everyone read about the airline that was considering removing all but one toilet on each of their planes AND make it coin-operated?

I can't imagine that this could even be legal.  Buildings are required to have a certain number of restrooms based on its capacity.  Airplanes must have the same requirements...right?

May I just say, "Whew!"?  and "Whew!" again!!

I have finally finished my taxes.  Started last Sunday.   Stumbled across the "Work for Pay" credit and spent the past week trying to figure it all out.  Bank records were scanned, Schedule M filled out, and final versions of both federal and state were filled out and assembled.

No refunds this year, so....they can dang well wait for the checks.

I, too, found it rather dreary going shortly after the season started and I dropped it cold.  The previews for this season-ender were provocative enough to raise my interest and I'm recording it on DVR...to peruse later.  Just cannot take all the high drama just before bedtime.

Finished a second scary Bollywood movie, this one called HIDE AND SEEK (2010). A group of people, who share a tragic incident from 12 years previous, are abducted and find themselves trapped in a vacant shopping mall where someone dressed as Santy Claus is trying to kill them, or get them to kill each other.

I jumped several times during this one!

Again, no song and dance numbers (what is happening in Bollywood!!!), but if you like scary movies, this one keeps you on the edge of your seat!

I had part one of a three part root canal yesterday - came home and took a pill and that was it for me - today we went to church, taught Sunday school, attended a congregational meeting in which we ( FINALLY!!! after only three years of looking) voted in our new Pastor!! (HOORAY~!)

Three years??  Yikes!  Our library system is hiring a new director (our previous director retired last October).  They announced the position and didn't get enough applicants...they said that it wasn't that they weren't good enough, they just wanted more to choose from, so they reopened the position and now it finally seems that they have enough applicants.  There are several from the west coast, a few from the east coast and mid-west, and one even from Greece!  Hopefully, it won't be too long before they announce who'll they'll interview in person.  That's when the public (and staff) will know who's in the running.
