Well, you've read the notes, you know that I never promised you a rose garden, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - I DID promise them a rose garden and that's where they are now. Damn them, damn them all to hell.
-
And the word of the day is: SUCCULENT!
-
I seem to recall an old country song written by Joe South and recorded in the early 1970s by North Dakota native, Lynn Anderson and then covered by Martina McBride earlier this year...
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.
When you take, you gotta give, so live and let live,
Or let go.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
I could promise you things like big diamond rings,
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover.
So you better think it over.
Well, if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true,
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter,
But what would it matter?
So smile for a while and let's be jolly:
Love shouldn't be so melancholy.
Come along and share the good times while we can.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.
Instrumental break.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
I could sing you a tune or promise you the moon,
But if that's what it takes to hold you,
I'd just as soon let you go, but there's one thing I want you to know.
You better look before you leap, still waters run deep,
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out,
And you know what I'm talkin' about.
So smile for a while and let's be jolly:
Love shouldn't be so melancholy.
Come along and share the good times while we can.
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.

The Best High School production I have seen was "Bugsy Malone" which was such a lot of fun. The cast really seemed to enjoy the show and the audience followed along with their enthusiasm. I'd not seen the stage version (and have not since). I also enjoyed the same School's production of "Li'l Abner".
Last year I was fortunate to see a School production of "Seusical" - a show which I had enjoyed seeing on Broadway. The show was certainly approached differently by the production team. Once again, the enthusiasm of the very young cast was infectious.
Way back in 1972 I saw a Grade School production of "Joseph" - a year before it's debut in the West End.
I've always felt it should have remained the "property" of children instead of the overblown work it has become.
-
Good morning, all! I had a lovely day to myself yesterday, and today I return to Toyland; my colleague Mr Tom Murray may be heading to London to do a production of THE NEXT FIVE YEARS at the theatre where the new SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE began, so we have only one more week together for final edits until he returns in October.
On the homefront, Dylan has met a young co-worker at Barnes & Noble, and I'm hoping she occupies the rest of his summer. Next Monday night, he and I are going to a party Josh Grisetti is throwing to celebrate his sitcom debut.
DR Maria, I too liked PRIME very much, although a lot of my reasons were nepotistic: my friend Naomi Aborn plays Meryl Streep's daughter and my dear friend Ryan (nephew of Howard) Shore wrote the lovely score. I thought the film very funny and it's bittersweet ending quite poignant.
TOD:
Xenia Ohio high school production of FLOWER DRUM SONG around 1970: best playing I've ever heard from a student orchestra and a great production.

TOTD:
BEst was Red River HS production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance... Their production of Fiddler on the Roof was not bad either...
Worst: Thompson HS rendition of Grease... I will spare you the details.... IT WAS BAD!!!
-
Good morning and good night from the land of OZ.
-
Matt H, no Loving You was not added to this production.
Jose, I was going to ask about Killer Bunnies and then you answered my question.
Since I didn't know where the stage door was at the KenCen I didn't suggest waiting for the cast, though I know they would have loved to meet CB, especially if I could have dropped your name. We did go to the Four Seasons after the show and had amazing desserts and coffee.
I have not seen many high school productions. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I'll be in and out all day. I'll tell you all about our trip to DC. I won't have any pictures until my friend, Karen, gets back from Russia. She is taking her digital camera with her and she didn't have time to load the DC pictures from the camera to the computer before she left. In fact, she is probably on the plane to Moscow right now!

Hello, DR Ben! Good night, DR Tomovoz!
-
Good night, nurse!
Good morning, DRs Elmore, Ben and Michael Shayne!
-
I have not seen any high school or college producitons since I moved down here. But saw many good and bad shows when I was in Montreal. The majority were college where usually the material they performed whether it was original or previously were produced were quite good and a several were amazing. Some were beyond the talents of the director and the cast like The Cocktail Party where the poetry was spoken like prose and character names were mispronounced.
-
And a good morning to Dan and Larry

Howdy, DRs MichaelS and DanTheMan!
Tra la, off to Toyland!

And good morning to you all.

TOD:
It's funny cuz this very subject came up the other day as I was watching the Freddie Awards with friends (the Freddie Awards is a sort of Tony Awards for New Jersey High School musical productions, though it seems to be limited to North Jersey High Schools.)
I haven't seen a high school production in years and I have to admit that I will have to be dragged by mules to ever see another. I just can't take that kind of mediocrity anymore. I've had my fill of football players foghorn their way through "My Time Of Day" and sopranos shrilling "Till There Was You" to shreads. Yes, I know that some of the kids are really talented and yes, I know the kids really worked hard on this show or that, but I really don't have any desire to sit through another "Six Months Out of Every Year" performed by a chorus of 30 wives and eight husbands.
That being said, I would have to say the best HS production I've ever seen was a HELLO, DOLLY! that was done by Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, NJ. I liked it mostly because they rented the original scenery and it was a treat to see that on stage.
BTW, what is the name of the scenery shop on Long Island? I was there on a field trip once when I was in college and I can't recall the name. Is it still there?
-
TOD:
A high school production of THE FANTASTICKS was extremely involving. A great theatergoing memory.
If law school counts, a fine production of TWELVE ANGRY MEN, which admittedly I had produced :) , but we had a fine director and some fine actors, and while watching it, I totally forgot that I even knew the actors.

TOD:
I am proabably biased as I was involved in both productions, running lights for one and makeup for the other, but the 1975 Deer Park High School production of the Mikado and the July 1976 Suffolk County Community College production of 1776 have to be high on my list.
For a productionin which I was not at all involved in I would say the 2004 Deer Park High School production of Bye Bye Birdie for sheer talent , energy and enthusiasm by the cast.
-
DR Maria, I too liked PRIME very much, although a lot of my reasons were nepotistic: my friend Naomi Aborn plays Meryl Streep's daughter and my dear friend Ryan (nephew of Howard) Shore wrote the lovely score. I thought the film very funny and it's bittersweet ending quite poignant.
Interesting. BTW - I watched the extras and discovered that the young writer/director was very much the main character! (His mother was a therapist, of course.)
TOD: The Fairview High School (Boulder, CO) production of HAIR. Not usually high school fare. And 9/11 happened in the middle of the rehearsal process, adding a whole new layer of meaning to the show. Peter Jennings was doing a series of shows on America that year, travelling all over the country and taking a very ordinary event as the center of each program, in order to explore some aspect of life in America. This particular production at Fairview (DD's high school) was the basis of one of the shows. It was nominated for an Emmy (and may have won - can't remember). Here's a very good article about it from the Denver Post. It also speaks to the discussion we were having a few days ago about the younger generation:

I don't go to high school productions and I can't think of any that I've seen that I'd ever give any kind of rave to. I like my theatre to have a professional quality. And despite the protestations of some I've known, no high school production can ever maintain a consistent professional level.
Best college productions: One I was in, it was directed by The Lovely Wife, a play by Ronald Ribman called CEREMONY OF INNOCENCE about King Ethelred the Unready.
The other was a production by the University of Cincinnati directed by Word Baker (of Fantastiks fame) when he was director of the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. It was a production of Marlowe's Edward II, done with minimal props and no costumes, performed at midnight on the levels and steps of the courtyard between the Playhouse and its offices. People sat where they could (on steps, walls, etc.) and the performers played around them. Very interesting.
-
Western Oregon State University's production of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS was fantastic! I could not believe it wasn't a professional production.
-
Good morning!
Today should be the last of our 90-degree days cooling down to the low 80s by the end of the week. It can't come fast enough!
Hate to complain about such bright, sunny weather, but it's still May and too early for these extreme temperatures.
-
I also have to say that Mrs. Tollefson's 1st grade class's production of HICKORY DICKERY DOCK at Griffin Creek Elementary School in 1970 was quite well received...of course I might be prejudiced as I was the star.
-
Well...well....well
-
DR JoseP, I would not be at all surprised if the maltilol in that suger free chocolate was the cause of the stomach pain...that is exactly what that stuff used to do to me (My system has gotten a bit more used to it now).
-
I saw a community college production of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN (with the original score and book - well before the Broadway revival that changed things), and I thought it was Broadway quality. Every role superbly cast, and every performer talented way beyond the scope needed for the show. The actor who did Snoopy (whose name escapes me now) I kept waiting to see his name in Playbills or starring on TV, but he seems to have vanished from the face of the earth (or changed his name and thus I wouldn't know where to look for him).
-
Thanks to DR BEN for the MAME Report....and for THE DROWSY CHAPERONE info....after I asked, I checked at Amazon.com....it is indeed being released in June....June 27 to be exact, so I preordered and got JERSEY BOYS at the same time to get Free Shipping.
So I will have in in a month or so.

Page Two....Lonely Goatherd Dance....
You can imagine it!
-
Well my show is cast...but of course not without a KICKER.
One family of father, mother, son auditioned and wouldn't do the show unless all three were cast. It was problematic, but everything else was about equal.... The son was particularly good as the youngest person in the show...a Richard Simmons type character.
So to get him, we cast mother and father in other roles...which they can do.
The KICKER - anyone who has directed a show knows what's coming next....yes, the son turned down the role.....
-
Tonight is Picture Night/Full Dress/Family Night for THE SOUND OF MUSIC. It is going to be all right, although the set changes take a LONG time....and all of the costumes haven't arrived. Surely they will be there today.
I am a little weary of seeing the Mother Abbess singing Climb Ev'ry Mountain in Daisy Dukes.

JRand - if that family put pressure on you that all three were cast or none at all, do you have any ethical obligation to keep the other two, assuming they wouldn't have been cast without the third? Do you smell a conspiracy in the air, the other two wangling their way into the parts while the son knew he wouldn't take it all along?

I had one horrendous experience with a high school production.
Because I was known to be reviewing films professionally while I was teaching, the drama teacher at the local high school called me and asked me to review their production of FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON. I told him I didn't want to because some of the students would be former students of mine, and I didn't feel I could be objective to them. He begged and begged, and I said no.
He was SO insistent that he called my principal and asked him to make a personal request to me to do this. The principal wouldn't take no for an answer. The drama teacher was insistent that he wanted an honest evaluation, not a sugar-coated reaction to their production, so my principal couldn't see a problem. I could be as honest as I wished without fear of reprisal since it was not my idea to do this.
At any rate, I agreed to do it. It was the WORST production I have ever suffered through, a total fiasco. Kids dropping lines all over the place, props left on-stage that others stumbled over, deadly pacing, awful acting by all but two kids, and a set obviously put up at the last second.
Well, I wrote the review and tempered any negativity with the few shining moments I could find. I didn't criticize a tenth of what I could have, and even when I wrote something negative, I tried to give the actor I was finding fault with a little praise as well about something.
You can guess what happend: a firestorm rained down on my head when the review was published in the local newspaper. You would have thought I had raped every child on the stage and left them for dead. I got hate mail at the newspaper from parents of the kids involved and from others not connected with the show and hate mail at my school. My poor parents got telephoned by parents wanting to know if this was where "that critic" lived (I had moved out many years before, thankfully). Worst of all, the drama teacher who had begged me to review the production wrote an impassioned letter to the paper chiding me for my "poison pen" and my lack of support for the school system where I worked! I called him to confront him about his two-faced reaction, but he slammed the phone down on me. FOr the rest of my career, that teacher never spoke to me again.
The editor of the newspaper defended me (he knew the whole story) in a rebuttal, but that was the LAST time I ever reviewed a local production.

Because I enjoyed Samuel Jackson's THE NEGOTIATOR so much the other day, I pulled his new take on SHAFT off the shelf to watch today.
I still have the last of CALAMITY JANE to watch, too.

TOnight begins the first of the summer shows I'm really looking forward to seeing: RESCUE ME on FX. It's an outstanding drama series involving New York firemen. The show had some shocking climaxes last summer when it last aired, so I'm really looking forward to seeing these fellows and their highs and lows again starting tonight.

No, I don't think so. The character he was cast as was NOT on his audition sheet, but he is TOO young to play the lead (he is 19).
The other two will be fine....and our second choice for his role is actually probably a better choice. The young man is a high school senior and will be playing a flamboyant GAY character, and I just hesitated to put him onstage in that role for all his peers to comment on. But he will be fine, and I am guessing he may steal the show. 8)

As for high school productions...
I don't think I've seen a high school production of a show since I was in high school. Oh! I did see a production of Joseph... in Richmond - a friend of mine was the director. I'm guessing it was good. However, the one funny thing I remember was that all the guys in the show had six-pack abs... courtesy of some creative make-up. ;)
Otherwise... The Washington Post holds their "Cappies" awards for high school theatre productions each year, and they have a reviews of high school published weekly. -And they're written by other high school-age writers. It's a very "cool" program. Some of the production stills that I've seen in the paper have looked very "professional". The high school circuit in the DC area is very competitive, and I'm constantly amazed at some of the shows that are being presented: Evita, Sweeney Todd, Falsettos... -And since the high school band programs in the DC area are also rather competitive, a lot of these shows have very good pits too.

TOD: I think one production I've seen is tied for best and worst. It was a high school production of OKLAHOMA! that starred many of my community theater buddies. It was simultaneously awful and fabulous because:
The entire cast played the show as if it were a melodrama- except for the actress playing Laurie.
My friend, a freshman, played Curly opposite a senior playing Laurie. He was without a doubt, the most campy, flamboyant Curly in the history of the production ever.
There was one actor in the chorus with only 3 lines, but who delivered them as Chris Farley's motivational speaker character from SNL.
Poor Jud is Dead was played off to side on an extention of the stage, while the entire mainstage was a slow moving tableu with dimmed lights that included Aunt Eller comically wiping a girls nose with a snot rag.
Out of My Dreams was begun by Laurie who was then joined by Dream Laurie, and they concluded the song as a duet. Interesting, I thought, what a nice segway into the dream ballet. And then the lights came up and they began selling concessions. Dream Laurie, but no dream ballet.

DR George reported a while back that THE DROWSY CHAPERONE was also being released on vinyl LPs. If the LP contains the same tracks as the CD, I might pick that one up.
I've been enjoying an ootlegbay recording of the show and I've been humming the songs to myself--something that hasn't happened in quite a while. The only thing that sort of rings false with me is the idea that there was ever a complete recording (including dialogue) of any show from the 20s. But since the show is otherwise so delightful, I can overlook this small detail.
Ain't that big of me?

In high school, I was overwhelmed by the Senior Class production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" (I was but a junior at the time).
My senior class production, in which I played a townsperson with a line here and a movement there, was "Our Town", which I truly "felt" was good.
On the other hand...who knows.
I was privileged to see the Forrest Sherman High School productions of "Oklahoma!" and "Anything Goes" in 1976 and 1977. I was the editor of the Naval Air Station, Naples, Italy, weekly paper "Panorama", and I did publicity for the shows. Many folks involved in the Naples Little Theater (really fun, talented folks) were also involved, technically, in the high school productions, so they were really fine-tuned. Of course, best-available talent seldom yields ideal vocals or natural acting, but they did their best and pulled it off.
I saw a "church" production a few years ago in South Carolina. A country church in Edgefield County...way out in the boonies.
There were two -- count 'em -- TWO young men involved (older than the rest) who had some idea of line delivery and stage presence. The rest of the cast would group themselves on either side of the stage by gender...all the girls would line up on the left, and the boys on the right, and monotonically recite the lines they learned.
Dreadful...and I had to like it 'cause I had a cousin in it.

Flip-Flop
In just a few hours, our household will increase once again to include six dogs. Their names are Marty, Mikey, Bonnie and Buster, Fletcher, and Angie.
Yep, Angie is coming back.
We were already scheduling much of today to take Angie to the vet to be fixed. (An odd word to use, when we're talking about making sure something doesn't work, but never mind.)
Sunday, der B received a phone call. The woman who had adopeted Angie had decided it wasn't a good match, that Angie wasn't getting enough exercise, and could we take her back? It turned out that the woman's daughter was the one voicing the objections, mainly that Angie is too big a dog.
Monday, the woman called again. She had changed her mind. Angie was getting enough exercise, and the real problem was that she barks at the trucks that drive by the house.
Today, we drove over to pick up Angie. The woman sadly had to ask us to keep her, as her daughter had voiced more objections, saying that Angie kept knocking down the youngest child in the family (aged two). The woman was clearly sad that things hadn't worked out, but it was easier to give up the dog than give up her daughter.
So we took Angie to the vet, with Fletcher, Bonnie and Buster in the car with us. They were along to get booster shots, and were quite happy to see her again. When we pick Angie up later this afternoon, we'll be taking Marty and Mikey along for their shots as well.
And that is how we once again have six dogs living with us.

Ya know, I was going to suggest when DR Vixmom posted the bizarre hairstyles that you revision your SOM in a decadent CABARET sort of mode. The Von Trapp kids could all be euro-trashy, with sun glasses and goth hair-dos. The abbey can become a brothel. And the captain--he has those children trained, alright--with a whistle...and a whip. Well not at the start of the evening...

I am listening to a most wonderful CD compilation of songs that were popular as pop instrumentals in the 50s and 60s...but, on this CD they are done with the lyrics by various popular singers of the 50s and 60s...Joannie Summers just sang A SUMMER PLACE....my favorite so far was Margie Singleton singing TELSTAR!

So far today I have gone to the gym, locked myself out of the apartment, and gotten back in again courtesy of our kind superintendent. It is a beautiful sunny day and I am trapped at my desk... I want to go to Central Park with DR Jose!

OH!
DR MBarnum - Yes, I will be going to The Tonys this year. We - the Lestat company were offered specially-priced, theatre-community tickets, so... I'll either be somewhere on the sides in the orchestra or in the front mezzanine - I'll get my actual ticket in another week or so. Of course, I was hoping that we would be performing on The Tonys this year, but at least I still get to go. -And with the host-less format this year and 60 different presenters, it should be quite the star-studded evening.

Just about... The DC area ones are usually held at the Kennedy Center. Usually quite the scene - basically another "excuse" for the young women to wear their prom dresses again, and the young men to "try" to dress up. I've never been to the ceremonies, but I've been in the building while they've been held, and there's always lots of cheering whenever the winners are announced - you can hear it out in the Grand Foyer

I've never been to the ceremonies, but I've been in the building while they've been held, and there's always lots of cheering whenever the winners are announced - you can hear it out in the Grand Foyer
THe Freddie Awards were just about the same--like The American Music Awards except the boys and girls are screaming over "Be Our Guest". And some of the kids who performed stayed in costume and make-up all evening. It was kind of sweet, in a way.

DR Cillaliz, I am very sorry to hear about Nilla. As many others have said, it was very obvious how much he was loved and cared for.
Thanks DTM. I have spent the morning running the vacuum, cleaning the furniture and am getting ready to start the laundry. I'll wash all his favorite blankets etc. Callie seems to be enjoying being the queen bee, but is somewhat lonely. Think I'll make my first visit to the Humane Society this afternoon....not sure I'll bring home a kitten yet, but it doesn't hurt to start looking ;D
-
DR George reported a while back that THE DROWSY CHAPERONE was also being released on vinyl LPs. If the LP contains the same tracks as the CD, I might pick that one up.
I'd read that the vinyl album includes all of the songs but not the dialogue from Man in Chair, so that it seems like a real cast album of a 1920s musical (if such a thing had really existed ;)).
-
I also have to say that Mrs. Tollefson's 1st grade class's production of HICKORY DICKERY DOCK at Griffin Creek Elementary School in 1970 was quite well received...of course I might be prejudiced as I was the star.
You played the mouse?
-
I like wine and vodka.
Mixed together???? ;)

And the word of the day is: SUCCULENT!
My true feelings of that period following Ash Wednesday.
-
Tomovoz
What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?
They are pronounced exactly the same way.
-
Very slow getting on here. Just jogged - thought I was going to DIE.
-
You played the mouse?
The cat!
-
I would...I love roses.
I'm particularly fond of the large-blossomed "Mr. Lincoln"!
Are you still talking roses?
-
DEATH BY CHOCOLATE is the play, DRVIXMOM.
Thanks for the SOM suggestions, DR DtM - if it was my production, I would do JUST that!
Thanks for cast album info, DRJOSE. And take that small sign that says HHW to the Tony awards show....and flash!
-
Beautiful roses, DR RLP....I like them in a vase....not in the rough. Too many bees!
-
When I moved into my house I ripped out all of the roses and gave them to my neighbor...they look much better in their yard.
I love roses but mine always ended up sort of cruddy looking.

I enjoyed my 4 day weekend so much that I wish it could have continued...but alas, I am here at work.
JRAnd55, I watched the John Saxon/Robert Redford film WAR HUNT (1962) last night...it was good, but it was quite disturbing...John Saxon rather scared me...and that is NOT the reaction I usually have towards him.
-
In fact let us have a John Saxon/Mary Ann Mobley page 4 swim/dance!
-
If I had my druthers, I'd druther have a Mary Ann Mobley/Gary Lockwood swim/dance...but Saxon will do in a pinch.
-
A SUMMER PLACE was the flip side of Miss Joanie's BIG MONSTER hit "Johnny Get Angry"....first time I ever heard the lyrics...and I love the song and her version of it.
Didn't know TELSTAR had lyrics....but since I played the organ, I was quite popular when it was number one. They no longer laughed when I sat down.

Yes it was a strange film. :-X
-
I watched a grunch of movies on DVD over the past four days....but oddly enough, the ones I remember are "Good Night and Good Luck," "Minority Report" , "Compulsion" and "Seems LIke Old Times." I'm certain there were a couple more...but....gone right out of my memory.

I got several DVD's in the mail today....that I can't watch for awhile.
WEST SIDE STORY special edition 2-disk set

Page Two....Lonely Goatherd Dance....
You can imagine it!
JRAND!!! I just spent an hour trying to get that out of my head !! LOL ;D
-
Topic of the Day: one of the absolute best high school theatrical experiences was about 15 years ago and my former high school put on a production of "Quilters." The six girls were the best actresses that I'd seen in any high school show and one even went on to become a professional actress! It was just wonderful.
-
Uh-huh!
And you can't wash your hands in a bison, either.
???
'
Nor do you want to go roller skating in a buffalo herd!
-
One unpleasant task dealt with - now on to shipping (already packaged early this morning).
-
I checked our NetFlix queue & PRIME is number 23 on the list.
-
SWW & DErBrucer, I’m sorry Angie’s new family weren’t worthy of her. I hope she will find the perfect home soon. I should say the perfect home aside from yours.

Terrific movie wallows, each of them.
"Leave Her to Heaven" is especially powerful subject matter and beautifully filmed in stunning color.
"The Razor's Edge"...should have been a masterpiece, but Power just can't quite invest Larry Darrell with enough juice to pull it off. Everyone else is superb, IMO, and it features one of the great film scores ever!
-
I have a sore throat.
That is all
-
It's beautiful outside of my window. Every year at this time I ask myself. "WHY didn't I become a teacher?!"
I want to take the summer off.

I am currently eating some fried chicken gizzards.

As Lamarr Trotti said about Tyrone during A RAZOR'S EDGE...."Well he came back from the war and got all philosophical and spiritual, but then someone introduced him to Lana Turner and that was the end of THAT!"

Off to the PICTURE NIGHT for The Sound of Music. NO LIQUID MAKEUP on the NUNS!!!
-
I am back from a lovely afternoon with DR Jose. He met me at Target where we shopped for summer clothing and other assorted goodies.
Shopping quandry for the day: Why is it that all women's shorts come in either "hoochie" or "mom" styles- can there be no happy medium??

I am currently eating some fried chicken gizzards.
I've always been a chicken livers man myself.

Now you've got me thinking about Mom's chopped liver from yesterday's TOD.

I just got back to work from walking down to the bank...with the wonderful weather it reminded me of the day I walked from Battery Park to Elmores home environment...the day was so beautiful and I was having such a blast!
I miss NY (and the NYorkers)

Vixmom - As to your sore throat, is it possible you've mixed allergy medication with alcohol lately?
:) Just kidding.

M*E*S*H - that's the name of the new sitcom about doctors wearing the mesh outfits Jose decribed.

...And does anyone - men - look good in those over-sized, over-long mesh basketball/athletic shorts?
Funny thing is I can remember when male basketball players from school to the pros wore the tiniest, skimpiest shorts of any sport - very much short shorts. The overlong shorts they wear now look so odd to someone from my era who can remember the short lengths.
Things do tend to run in cycles, so I suspect they're eventually go back to be short at some future date.
-
Had a nice (albeit brief) lunch, and then came home to finish CALAMITY JANE. The rest of the DVD did look quite beautiful with a sharp picture and good color. One of Doris' all-time best.
-
I had expected to watch the remake of SHAFT this afternoon, but in the mail today was the latest Hercule Poirot DVD set featuring David Suchet. These four mysteries were made specifically for A&E, and I had only managed to catch one of them on TV - CARDS ON THE TABLE. Since I had seen it, I selected another from the set to watch this afternoon:
THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN. The book was kind of confusing and has generally been thought to be one of Dame Agatha's worst mysteries, but the filmed version worked just fine for me. I didn't remember who the murderer was, so I simply sat back and enjoyed trying to piece the clues together before Poirot solved it. I was wrong, and the show ended up as a great delight.
-
LESS THAN PERFECT has a new episode tonight at 9:30, so I'll watch SHAFT later today and should be able to finish it before the ABC sitcom begins.
-

I know some of you watch (however grudgingly) NBC soaps, and here's an article from today's VARIETY that might interest you:
<The behind-the-scenes drama at NBC's two daytime sudsers is getting almost as good as the onscreen action.
Peacock isn't commenting, but "Days of Our Lives" head writer Jim Reilly could soon be leaving the show, according to two people familiar with the situation.
While sudser scribes regularly come and go, Reilly is one of the medium's deans, having brought the Corday Prods./Sony Pictures TV-produced "Days" back from the ratings doldrums on more than one occasion with out-there storylines (even by daytime standards).
Reilly's most recent stint in the sudser's fictional Salem began in the summer of 2003. Within a few months, he quickly helped lift the show to first in women 18-49 with a serial killer storyline -- all while doing double duty as head writer on NBC's other soap, "Passions."
So why might Reilly be leaving now? NBC execs aren't talking, but the potential shift comes amid buzz that former "As the World Turns" head scribe Hogan Sheffer -- a multiple Daytime Emmy winner who's recently started developing for primetime -- has been approached about taking over the same gig on "Days."
Even if Reilly leaves "Days," he still appears to have a job on "Passions." NBC on Friday said it was renewing the sudser for another year and that Reilly would continue as head writer and consulting producer.
Not everyone on "Passions" is so lucky, however. At the same time NBC renewed the show, it implemented a round of budget cuts, with about 20 staffers expected to lose their jobs.
Long-term, the future of both "Days" and "Passions" is somewhat cloudy. Daytime ratings at all the nets have been on a downward spin for a decade, while production costs for many shows remain higher than nets would like.
And though NBC negotiated a lower license fee for "Days" a few years ago, the show's pricetag -- and the fact that NBC has no ownership stake in it -- has led to industry speculation about whether it makes sense for the Peacock to continue "Days" without another license-fee cut. Some analysts even believe NBC -- or another net, most likely CBS -- may consider experimenting with the cheaper telenovela format in daytime.
Carat USA's Shari Anne Brill says nets have no choice but to consider change in daytime.
"It's not as profitable as it used to be," she said. "Women increasingly have jobs and work outside the home. The daytime audience is consistently getting older or younger and more downscale.">

My supervisor's name is George Banks. ;D Just had to share.

Monday Tuesday greetings! These Monday holidays always mix me up!
Today I took my mother to the two places necessary to order her passport, to Big Lots (her choice, not mine), Hallmark, the garden center, the deli/cafe (where she bought my lunch and I bought chopped sirloins for dinner). It's hot and muggy here, more like August than late May, so I came home and slept for a while.

High school, DS Rob's senior year his school did Fiddler on the Roof and his friend's school did Music Man. I wasn't expecting much from either and was pleasantly surprised. My quarrel with many HS productions is that the singing and dancing are OK, but the acting is abyssmal.

I miss NY (and the NYorkers)
I do, too, DR MBarnum! When I'm walking from my parking place to the Kettering Tower in downtown Dayton, I play a mind game that 2nd St. is really W. 81st, the building to my left is really the American Museum of Natural History (not Dayton Metro Library), and the townhouses on my right are brownstones. If I keep my head down, sometimes it works!
-
Shopping quandry for the day: Why is it that all women's shorts come in either "hoochie" or "mom" styles- can there be no happy medium??
Two suggestions, DR TPunk: Land's End and your sewing machine!
-
I'm back from a few errands. Stopped by Mr. Grant Geissman's and heard the rough version of what we're working on for the Music Center - it sounded good, and now he's got to flesh it out.
-
Off now to do some housework and then settle in with more DVDs for the evening.
WBBL.

Thunderstorms rolling in - bye for now!

I am currently eating some fried chicken gizzards.
I had those last Thursday at the Gingham Inn

I've been a little negligent when it comes to the bath department (doggie's, not mine) -- and Abie hasn't had a bath in months. Today all that changed and he is positively glowing! Shield your eyes, here he comes...

Ahhh, what great cats! I held a couple little black kittens at the shelter today. I didn't fall in love with any of the kittens, and Callie seems a little depressed today, so I think it's too soon. But it's still fun to look.

I have read that the move from skimpy shorts to the baggy knee-length shorts was a result of Michael Jordan's liking to tug on his shorts when playing defense back in the early 1990s.

"Momoochie"?
Ah, yes, Momoochie. That was the long-awaited sequel to all those Disney serials that Kevin Corcoran starred in, back in the late 50s/early 60s. To see his children after his divorce, grown-up Moochie dresses himself up as a soccer mom and ends up coaching them to the league's championship. Much hilarity ensues when he gives his biggest rival a magic ring, there's the whole circus sequence, and plenty of tears when the dog dies. "Momoochies" have been a popular item ever since, sexy and scanty but suitable for the typically overweight suburban mom.

Angie is resting comfortably downstairs, post-surgery. We took Marty and Mikey along for their shots when we went to pick her up, and they were both very glad to see her. She is, after all, a part of the family.

DR Jose (or any other NYC DRs) - have you been to the new Apple store at Fifth Avenue and 59th St.?
-
Beautiful view in the living room, TPunk. By the way, have you read "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" yet?
-
A veritable treasure of DVDs arrived today...all from Deep Discount sales of recent weeks...
The one I most look forward to viewing is "Die! Die, My Darling!"
I don't know why.

So did you.
-
Great to see TCB on line. Please don't overdo it again. May your day be as pain free as possible.
-
Not as funny as "a low buff" comment I read yesterday!
-
Coincidence: I'm listening to Kenny Ball's version of "Bison Street Blues". I'm having a Trad Jazz week.
-
Hey! Welcome back to DR TCB!
-
I understand that we will soon be celebrating 200 years of buffalos in America.
-
I have seen pictures of the new Apple store but since I'm a Windows kinda guy I have not yet ventured in. Perhaps this weekend if the line is not as long as a block (or more). It is the flavor of the week. Perhaps all those people waiting to get into the Apple store also shop at Trader Joe's and now they won't be at Trader Joe's so I can get into THAT store. Ahh, the travails of living in New York.
-
I did not see any bison at the National Zoo in Washington, DC but I did see Sloth Bears and Elephants and Tree Shrews and Pandas and Cheetas and Prairie Dogs and Giraffes and Zebras and many, many other of our 4-legged brethren. We had a great time, spending almost 5 hours wandering and looking and relaxing. We got there just after 11am and left about 3:45. We then went over to Baskin Robbins and I had a Strawberry Blast (I believe that's what it's called) similar to a smoothie without the dairy, I believe. It's strawberry puree mixed with ice to form a slushy brain freeze kind of drink. Karen had a chocolate shake and David had one of those ice cream coffee concoctions. All in all it was a faboo afternoon!
-
Almost through the day without too much drama - less than anticipated. One bit of drama I simply decided not to have - not worth it, really. I'll just do what I need to do slowly.
-
I just got back to work from walking down to the bank...with the wonderful weather it reminded me of the day I walked from Battery Park to Elmores home environment...the day was so beautiful and I was having such a blast!

Ddi that previous post require a Spoiler?

Just got on and now the Vixter wants to type her English homework so, laters!!
-
Gosh, the phone just rang and it was someone polling folks for who they're going to vote for in the mayoral primaries.
-
i've gotten tons of paper over the past few weeks...all campaign-related. I'm very resentful of all the wasted trees....and for the fact that I have to dispose of the paper products.
-
It's a nice cool late afternoon here in Oakland.
Should be good sleeping tonight.
-
DR Jose (or any other NYC DRs) - have you been to the new Apple store at Fifth Avenue and 59th St.?
Yes, I have - I went Opening Weekend - but not Opening Day since the lines were crazy long. -However, since they were giving away a free computer every hour on the hour for the first 24 hours...
It's very nice, and very big. And all underground, and, yes, it is open 24 hours. Since it is an Apple Store, there are not really any more different products on display, just more of each item/product. However, the new store does claim to have the biggest Genius Bar of all the currently open Apple Stores.
Note to DR Ben - The lines may seem a block long now, but they're really not - It's all a part of controlling the traffic flow between FAO Schwartz and the Apple Store since they share the same plaza.
OH! And getting into Trader Joe's is not that bad now either. However, getting out of Trader Joe's is a different story. However, they do have at least 20 check out counters, so... Now if they could just replenish the shelves more often. -Especially since their wine shop next door always seems to be well-stocked. ;)
-
Some other DVDs in today's mail...Last Picture Show, A Man for All Seasons, The Front, It Should Happen to You, Silverado 2-disc gift set (it was dirt cheap), Tess, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, The Howards of Virginia and Experiment in Terror.
-
OK - Off to dinner... finally...
Laters...
-
I was looking at upcoming DVD releases...and HONESTLY! There's no way I can even hope to keep up with things I want.
It's incredible the number of boxed sets that come out each month...musicals and Cary Grant and Clark Gable and Mae West...and Garbo...and on and on and on...and then the Vol. 2s and 3s, etc.
CRIMINY!
-
Rock-a-Hula, Baby!
-
That's the first still in a 16-still color set. I have about half of them.
-
Not that anyone would care. Just saying...
-
All these people logged in, and no one posting but me?
What gives?
-
Who barbed the rhubarb?
-
Not I...I don't barb nothing.
-
Or anything.
-
Why a frenzy, you ask?
I'm frenzied...don't know why.
-
Thanks -- whomever -- for the clarification of that "joke" vixmom tried to put across earlier. :D
If I'd known it was a Cockney accent that was intended to be used, it would have made perfect sense.
"Basin" is pronounced "bison" in Cockney....funny stuff, what!
Haw!
-
I've ordered the Martin "Peter Pan" on CD, along with the Harry Connick 2-CD set that includes "The Pajama Game."
Looking enormously forward to them.

Have pre-ordered the "Barbara Cook at the Met" CD...and the 4th Season of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" on DVD.

Ron, did you happen to order "The Pajama Game" from Barnes and Noble? Their special edition has a two-song bonus CD that you can only get when you order from them...or buy from their store. I went to the local B&N but didn't get it. I totally forgot about the bonus CD from B&N and ordered it from Amazon (at pretty much the same price). :-\
-
Did ANYONE happen to order this from B&N?

MattH,
In regards to the Variety article you posted, It is being thoroughly torn apart on a few soap boards and with great hope that Reilly is out. However ti does not mean that show or Matt for that matter is out of the woods.
Matt has been on days for TWO weeks and still IS NOT listed in the credits and he has had signficiant speaking lines. From what I read on the AFTRA site and from a friend who works on an ABC soap, that is a No-No. This is not the first time Days has done this to Matt. I find it truly offensive that an actor does not get respect for their work.
I would be ecstatic if DAys could get rid of Reilly. The man cannot write and is an embarrassment to writers everywhere.
-
In my personal opinon, I do not think Reilly should have written both shows at the same time. Passions is something that is no where near the definition of the soap genre. Days once was but has been seriously damaged by JER's petty plot gimmicks and character assassinations and his petty hatred for veteran talent.
-
BAsically in 03 Matt, Corday sold the soul of teh show in order to keep it on the air and they were forced to take Reilly on as head writer by NBC. Major mistake there!
-

You would think that Matt's agent/manager(s) would be calling the show and demanding he be given appropriate screen credit. Either someone's dropping the ball or the management of the show are total asses.

Because the bear made a sacrifice, too.

More like Corday's end is screwed up.... IT really is sad...
-
I will not even say what they call REilly on the soapboards...
-
At about two I had a foot long Subway Club. I swear, my stomach must have really shrunk, because I could barely finish what I normally have no problem at all finishing. I also had some grapes. Not sure if I'll eat anything else - we shall see what we shall see and when we see what we shall see we will have seen what we shall see.
On another note (C#), I got invited to two play openings this week - my pal Cindy Williams asked me to go with her to Bermuda Avenue Triangle, starring Joe Bologna, Renee Taylor, and Lainie Kazan - that's Friday night. And then Saturday night I got invited to some new musical on Santa Monica Blvd. Actually, it opens on Thursday, and I had my choice, but it sounded like more interesting people would be there on Saturday, so I chose that. Apparently, I am now on one publicist's celebrity list.
-
Have a lovely time at both events bk..
-
Good Evening!
Ah... Dinner was finally served... And, yep, I had fried chicken livers! -And this time instead of the pork fried rice, I opted for the tostones, fried green plantains. Quite yummy and greasy, but still yummy all the same!
*And it was a perfect post-show-closing "indulgence" meal.
**And, yes, I'm getting back into my wellness routine tomorrow.
;)
-
Maria what did you use to make Abie shine like that?
Cillaliz, I’m glad you can be home with Callie.
'night
-
Jane, my DF's sister got a Bernese Mountain puppy named Tara
-
Hey! Welcome back to DR TCB!
Thanks, Dan (tM)!

It's a nice cool late afternoon here in Oakland.
Should be good sleeping tonight.
Argh! I'm happy for you but sweltering here! Wonder what summer is going to be like? Not encouraging based on what we've had for the last half of May.

I scuttled my plans for SHAFT (though it's cued up in the player for tomorrow), and instead tonight watched one of my all-time favorite movies - THE HEIRESS.
It's a DVD-R I burned from TCM. The print is not in the greatest shape, but I understand the Region 2 DVD of THE HEIRESS is also not a perfect transfer, so sounds like they might have used the same master for the DVD and the Turner broadcast.
At any rate, I'll take even a second rate transfer to watch and luxuriate in one of the real masterworks of cinema.

LESS THAN PERFECT is using the last few episodes to establish new relationships among the cast, some of whom have fought for years on the show. Looks like the show is going out with a smile on its face.

RESCUE ME came back to TV tonight also establishing a bunch of new relationships from the ashes of broken ones at the end of last season.
And next week, Susan Sarandon begins a three episode arc on the show. Love her and can't wait to see her interacting with the fellas.

Well, it's very muggy here, so I'm going to log off and see about putting myself to bed.
Good night!

I guess it's been mentioned as a rumor, but now it's official that Rebecca Luker will be playing Mrs. Banks in MARY POPPINS starting this fall!!!
That's awesome, what a great role for her!

Ahhh, what great cats! I held a couple little black kittens at the shelter today. I didn't fall in love with any of the kittens, and Callie seems a little depressed today, so I think it's too soon. But it's still fun to look.
It sounds like it isn't quite the right time yet, but I bet the day that you click with a kitten will be the day that Callie is ready for a new friend.

Beautiful view in the living room, TPunk. By the way, have you read "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" yet?
Not yet, but it is on my wish list at B&N. I will get it the next time I place an order large enough to qualify for free same day shipping.

Susan is not only a beautiful and incredibly talented actress, but she is one of the most down-to-earth people I have ever met.

At this moment I am multi-tasking...I am petting a purring Freddy who is sitting in my lap while I peruse and post on HHW and at the same time am converting my VHS tape of JAPANESE WAR BRIDE from VHS to DVD.

I just love this movie, ever since I first saw it on the late, late, late show years ago!

And since nobody seems willing to release it on DVD, I will just have to do it myself.

I feel very odd. My equilibrium is off and I feel like I'm going to fall over when I walk. I don't think it's the Subway sandwich, but who knows. The only other thing I've eaten was a package of trail mix (you know, dried fruit, peanuts, that sort of thing) from the local liquor store.

Inner ear infection BK?
-
Definitely not an ear thing - a stomach thing.
