And the word of the day is: RIDENT!

Rident was a catholic brother who was the laugh of the party hoot of the Abbey . After canonization, his manner became harsher; he was, after all, StRident.

Obituary: Sci-fi author wrote `The Illuminatus! Trilogy'
By Dennis Hevesi, New York Times
Long Beach Press Telegram

Robert Anton Wilson, an author of "The Illuminatus! Trilogy" - a mind-twisting science-fiction series about a secret global society that has been a cult classic for more than 30 years - died on Thursday at his home in Capitola. He was 74.

The author of 35 books on subjects like extrasensory perception, mental telepathy, metaphysics, paranormal experiences, conspiracy theory, sex, drugs and what he called quantum psychology, Wilson wrote the trilogy with his friend Robert J. Shea in the late 1960s, when both were editors at Playboy. The books - "The Eye in the Pyramid," "The Golden Apple" and "Leviathan" - were all published in 1975 by Dell Science Fiction. They never hit the best-seller lists, but have never gone out of print. Shea died in 1994.

Wilson contended that people should never rule out any possibility, including that lasagna might fly.

Contest ends in death by water intoxication

SACRAMENTO - A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

...

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

Initially, contestants were handed eight-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland.

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

...

Will water bottles now be required to have warning labels?

Well I have had a lovely day!

During the day I went to se Hunter S. Thompson's Gonzo, an art exhibit. I had hoped for wild and exciting, and got generic and what he probably figured was thought provoking. Pictures of his neighbors, wife, and people at the beach. From a man so interesting came the basics of his life and time: normality. Of course that is only my opinion.

I then went to see two Golden Globe nominated foreign films at the aero theater. this was ofcouse preceded
by shopping on Montana Ave.

Both movies were at least 2:30 mins. long, so by the time we got out it was nearly 1:30 and freezing!

The first film, Letters from Iwo Jima was fascinating and well done, but I was not as amazed as everyone swore it would be. I was very much what I expected of it's type of film. Clint Eastwood was not able to come to the screening.

After a 15 min. Intermission, half the crowd had left
(around 200 people stayed though) for the second picture. This time the director had come, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, a very interesting and energetic man. With him was one of the stars of the picture, the attractive and talented Sebastian Koch.

The Lives of Others is an amazing picture! It concerns the East German Stasi in the mid 1980's spying on it's own citizens. Although  the plot is slightly predictable, It has sweet moments and surprises and characters to love and hate and wonderful acting. The director said that a key element in making the picture as good as it was rested on the crew, many of whom had personal and intense experiences with the Stasi in that time (only in 1989 did the Wall come down! I was one!). I highly recommend this movie to everyone!!!!!!!!

It is now late and I shall join everyone who is sleeping in dreamland.

I haven't seen Joyeux Noel, but I like the film "A Midnight Clear", which has a similar "Christmas truce" storyline, but taking place in Germany during WWII. It has a good cast: Gary Sinese, Ethan Hawke, Arye Gross and is based on a William Wharton novel. (Apparently he served in Germany in WWII.) I saw it at Sundance when we premiered our film there and it was one of the best things I saw. I'd like to see it again to see if it still holds up or if it just refreshing because I'd seen so many other bad movies!

My favorite film at the festival that year was "Truly, Madly, Deeply". The co-worker who was mentioned yesterday as being a big AR fan would love this if she hasn't seen it!

Good morning, all!  I am listening to Haydn's "Mass In Time Of War" and pondering todays NY Times topic on the military's taking control of this country.  This and DR Cillaliz' post on the government's unhappiness with detainees' attorneys are frightening and most unseemly.

From 21st Century to 18th Century France, I'm reading a wonderful biography of Madame du Pompadour, and it only reinforces my impression of the court of Louis XV from Antonia Fraser's bio of Marie-Antoinette: too much liesure, too much idiocy, too much luxury. Pompadour's rise from the bourgeoisie to a royal marriage giving her the status to become a royal mistress is an interesting social history as well.  The fact that she held the title and position until her death in a court of vipers and intrigue is alone enough to show what an intelligent woman she was.  I highly recommend it.  Many of the dumb whores in our society could do well to follow Pompadour's survival skills.

Today, BABES reports and DVDs, not sure what yet.

Well, #1 on my to-watch list today is the 1929 RIO RITA which came on at 6 a.m. this morning on TCM. When I got up, I saw the DVR in record mode, so I'm assuming it captured it. To take no chances, I also set the hard drive in my DVD recorder to pick up the broadcast, too, so I'd have two sources to go to for my first foray into this film.

ROME and EXTRAS start up again tonight on HBO, and all of the usual suspects on Sunday (DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, BROTHERS & SISTERS, the CBS procedurals) all feature new episodes tonight, too.

An enormous amount of new programming on display tonight!

Well, you won't believe it - I can barely believe it myself but I must for it is true.  I woke up, turned on Ye Olde Laptop, then went into the bathroom to shave.  I turned on the hot water.  No hot water.  I turned on the cold water.  No cold water.  I went to the kitchen.  I turned on the water.  No water.  I went to the other bathroom and turned on the water.  No water.  I called the DWP hot line.  Apparently, they have received many calls reporting no water.  Their response?  The water in the pipes has frozen because of the cold weather we've been having.  When it heats up, then we'll have water.  What kind of idiots are these?  We're not exactly New York here.  It's not that big a deal right now, but it will be later.  I've been on hold for fifteen minutes trying to get an ETA - they say they will come out if necessary, but later (they're hoping it will unfreeze on its own.  This city just falls apart when it's too hot or too cold or too much rain.

You will not believe what I was just told.  The DWP says they are at a loss to explain why this would happen - the lady I talked to is forty-two years old and she, like me, has lived here all her life and never heard of such a thing happening in LA.  They have no ETA, there is nothing they can do, nor is there anything they WILL do - apparently, homeowners are responsible, not the DWP - their responsibility is only at what they call the "mains" and the water at the "mains" is fine - it's the pipes on the homeowners property that are frozen.  I mean, COME ON.  I aksed her what if it's all day and night.  She said nothing they can do.  I asked her what if it's a week?  Nothing they can do.  I am not a happy camper at this time.  The sky is blue and the sun is out, so maybe that will help.

A new study by Dr. David Legates, Delaware's State Climatologist and director of the University of Delaware's Center for Climatic Research, throws cold water on the claim that global warming threatens to cause the extinction of polar bears.

Scare Unwarranted
As part of his study titled Climate Science: Climate Change and its Impacts, expected at press time to be released in April of this year, Legates reviewed assertions by environmental alarmists that global warming is causing an unnatural increase in Arctic temperatures, posing a threat to the thickness and extent of sea ice required by polar bears.

In particular, Legates examined claims made in the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment (Arctic Assessment), an international project of the Arctic Council--an intergovernmental forum consisting of representatives from eight Arctic nations and six groups representing indigenous peoples.

After careful review, Legates found the Arctic Assessment claims of an impending, human-induced arctic meltdown are "not supported by the evidence."

Yes, global warming leads to extreme weather patterns, not just warmer weather

I don't want to hear a thing about global warming from any camp that does not support a significant expansion of new-clue-yer nuclear power plants in the US and expanded off shore oil drilling to reduce US dependence on coal.

I'll pick a separate fight with one-driver suburban housewife SUVs.

PS -Yes, I would support a much higher tax on gasoline to act as a disincentive for gasoline consumption (tax funds to go for mass transit).

The water in the pipes has frozen because of the cold weather we've been having.  When it heats up, then we'll have water.

That is about as good as the explanation for the streets flooding in Bucharest which was partially due to too many people taking showers during the heavy rain.

But there are things you can do! When anticipating a freeze, leave one faucet on in a tiny, slow stream - that will keep your pipes from freezing (does jump the water bill a bit :(

der Brucer

Using a hair dryer on the pipes after they freeze can help speed the thawing process.  A portable heater also works.

While I did laundry and other Sunday chores, I watched two movies.

I began, of course, with RIO RITA. Like that other famous 1929 musical THE COCOANUTS, this movie is primitive and it looks it: scratches, dirt, print damage, muffled sound, tinny sound levels. (Universal has done what it could with THE COCOANUTS to clean it up visually and aurally; RIO RITA hasn't been touched.) The off-stage orchestra drowns out the actors sometimes, especially in the opening scene which is almost totally drowned out by the music being too loud and the microphone over the actors' heads being too far away. The style of acting is totally alien to our time, and the singing actors have to be careful to face front or cheat out to keep the lyrics from getting lost since they are singing live.

But none of it matters. It's an utterly charming example of a period musical with comics that have little or nothing to do with the main story but are there purely for relief from the melodramatic romance and florid singing. John Boles makes a rugged leading man, and Bebe Daniels I'm sure surprised the world with her accomplished singing.

And what surprised me is that though the film is a 1929 musical with mostly static camera set-ups (since the cameras were housed in those sound proof booths), there is some movement - a reverse dolly shot that caught me totally by surprise since everything else seemed to be long shots, medium shots, or close shots in the standard pattern of early talkies.

And the last two reels are in two strip Technicolor that has survived! I wasn't aware that any of it was done in color, and when I saw the Technicolor credit in the main titles, I just knew the segment would be in B&W like "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" is in BROADWAY MELODY. But, no! The color was there!

It was a great first viewing of RIO RITA.

Next, I watched another film I've had on the hard drive of my DVD recorder for months - RED HEADED WOMAN. It was supposed to be a comedy, but I didn't find any of it funny, and I tired of the old melodramatic nod to the 1910s and 1920s where a vampish woman can twist a man to do her bidding despite his better judgment. DUring the movie, Jean Harlow manages to turn at least three decent, law-abiding men into the ways of sin just because she's "beautiful." Theda Bara and later Pola Negri might have gotten away with such claptrap, but I'm surprised audiences in the 1930s were still enjoying this kind of melodrama.

Mae West got away with the vamp-stuff because of her wit, but these films that aren't comedies are really my least favorite movies from the 1930s.

Another sad truth:  These weather patterns surely seem to suggest that environmental things are going wacko.

Unfortunately, the school children of Federal Way, Washington will never have a chance to find out what is going on with the environment; because they will still be waiting for someone (other than Pat Robertson) to come up a film that offers an alternative opinion to AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH.

Last night, der B and I watched The Reduced Shakespeare Company perform The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged on DVD.  Howlingly funny stuff.

That was the good news.

The bad news was that I stayed up late because of our watching The Reduced Shakespeare Company perform The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged on DVD, and had to get up early today in order to be at work on time at 7:30 am.

I was very glad to get home and take a nap.  All better now.   :D

(Although I would like to know why, during said nap, I dreamed about various perishable items being mis-delivered to our mailbox that we would have to deliver to the correct people ourselves.  Among the perishables was a very cute and cuddly live piglet.  I have no idea what this dream was supposed to mean.)

My understanding is that low-sulfur coal pollutes far less and that we have the technology to achieve less pollution from high-sulfur coal, as well. Do you have any insights into this? Coal is currently the cheapest form of energy in the US.

DR Ginny, what was the outcome of the Ohio water pollution?

Our difficulties only lasted until the evening of the day they were discovered (last Sunday).  The boil alert was lifted for our part of town, but I continued to use bottled water for a couple of days.  Earlier this afternoon, I drove past the corner where the water main had to be repaired and it was all patched up.

I'm back from a trip to Border's to use my personal shopping day (10% off) and my holiday rewards dollars, both of which were about to expire.  I bought 2 travel resources for Washington, DC (Frommer's 2007 and City Walks), a birthday card for our niece/goddaughter (who turns 18 this week), some half-price Christmas gift wrap, and my February book group book, Jane Glover's Mozart's Women.

When we take I-5 to Los Angeles, a route we try to avoid, we pass the windmills.  They are kind of eerie looking.

Depending on which study you read there is no proof, or the windmills are killing the birds & improvements in wind energy need to be made to protect the birds.

In any case...

When I headed out earlier, I had no real plan or intention.  I just wanted to walk around for a bit.  So, I headed up to Broadway, and started walking south.  145th St... 137th St... 125th... 116th... 110th... 100th...  When I got to 98th, I ended up running into a friend I haven't seen in ages - a very pleasant surprise.  He just happened to be heading out for a bit to stretch his legs too, so we headed over to Riverside Park and walked around for a while while we caught up on each other's lives.

It was gray and foggy this afternoon, and it was neat looking at the ships that were moored in the Hudson - almost ghost-like with all the fog.  And we came across one older gentleman who seemed to be on a first-name basis with a couple of the squirrels in the park.  As we approached him, we heard him calling out various names, "Angel!, Maria!, Anna!..."  I thought he might have been walking around with some (grand)children, and he was calling out their names.  But there were no children in sight.  Then after seeing him pull out some pieces of bread from a bag... Ah... Some squirrels came up to him, and started eating out his hand.  Only in New York.  :)

After walking around for a while, we went ahead and stopped into some Thai place for dinner.  Very good.  And, again, it was great running into my friend, and catching up.  He works for the airline industry now, but he used to be an actor, and we had met years ago on a production of Singin' In The Rain.  So, it was kind of neat running into each other in the rain today.

WFO and his everloving Joe took a 2 week excursion to St Croix .  I agreed to look in on things every once in a while....well it tiurns out it was a mighty good thing I did... yesterday morning while BK was having no hot water  WFO and Joe had it sprouting from the joins in a  basement pipe.

This visit I had made after a trip out with Vixdad and the Vixter so they were waiting out in the car while I went in to change the lighting patterns and talke a quick look around.

Thank goodness!!

I ran out and grabbed Vixdad and he ran in and turned off the house water supply.  The guys had of course instructed me in these arts but I panicked and forgot it all....

They also had mentioned that they had a new plumber  recommended by their neighbor, and had left that same neighbors' phone number for me... well she was fortunately home and called the plumber for me who came and effected repairs.

It seemd the leak had sprung not too long before I discovered it and it was still on the smallish side not a roaring stream.....and evern more fortunat;ley it occurred directly above the spot the gents are keeping their newspapers for recylcing, so the papers soaked up a good bit of it and kept the mess to a minimum.

WFO and his everloving Joe took a 2 week excursion to St Croix .  I agreed to look in on things every once in a while....well it tiurns out it was a mighty good thing I did... yesterday morning while BK was having no hot water  WFO and Joe had it sprouting from the joins in a  basement pipe...

WHEW!!

In other news.... my left hip has been bothering me for several months now.  I could sit very comfporatbly but often when I stood up and attempted to walk i would get pains in my hip and down my leg... this has progressed from intermittment and mild discomfort to contant and sharp pain..

I finally went to the doctor last Tueasday evening and he told me I had an inflamation.  He gave me a cortisone shot and a prescription... for several hours after he gave me the shot the bones in my left leg ached so badly I swore the man was a quack ... but I fianlly fell asleeep and when I woke up ...mairacles of miracles!... I could stand on both legs... I could go down (and up!) the stair case one step after another instead of one step at a  time whole leaning heavily on the railing

I have been instructed to go for a hip xray but this weekend was too full to deal with such matters so I shall try and slip it in in the next week or so

The Vixter and I were invited to a sleepover party for one of her friends... it took place yesterday eveing until today and I was invied along as the birthday girls' mom wanted soem adult company... she held it at the local Sheraton hotel.... the 6 girls (12-13) swam in the hotel pool... ate pizza, experimented with makeup , hairdos and nail polish... sang to kareoke (we brought the Vixter's machine with us)   and slept intheir sleepin bags on the floor while the other mom & I had the beds

In the morning there was a brunch buffet with an omlet and waffle chef and other delightful breakfast foods .... the girls had another swim inthe morning after breakfast  and then we cehked out and broughthtem all home.

It was really a lot of fun!

I began my evening with SLEEPY HOLLOW on Blu-ray disc. I was totally pleased with the luscious high definition transfer, very three dimensional, and though color has been desaturated in the printing, they still manage to have red full blown, and there was more red (of the blood variety) in the movie than I remembered. I also had totally forgotten the ending and the person responsible for the headless horseman, so it was in many ways like watching the movie for the first time.

I didn't remember Depp's Ichabod fainting so many times either. Very funny.

I don't know if this is an urban legend or not, but supposedly, on some local news broadcast that took place last year, a weather forcaster predicted a snow storm that was to bring eight to nine inches.  The following night, after the storm failed to materialize, the anchorwoman in her on-air segue to the weather man said, "So Bob, where are those nine inches you promised me last night?"

I've been hope this would turn up on Youtube, but so far no luck.

And then BROTHERS & SISTERS dealt with dating woes of all the siblings and Mom, and each story was engrossing.

Jason Lewis playing the closeted soap star dating Kevin (Matthew Rhys) had a sizzling kiss with him setting the stage for a very promising story arc for the two characters. Rob Lowe, an actor I've never been especially fond of, is fitting beautifully into the ensemble.

I've seen that clip, so it's not an urban legend.

*And it reminds me of a comment made by a radio commentator in DC a couple of years back who always tended to make, shall we say, "ambiguous" comments from time to time.  Well, he was in the middle of a movie-review segment... "I finally saw the new Kevin Costner movie the other night.  I was walking funny the next morning."

I don't know about the veracity of that story but I remember years ago when DR  Frank Fields (Storm Field's dad)  was the NY weatherman and forecasted  light flurries.... we were slammed with a huge storm of more thana foot a.. the anchor person asked Dr. Fields to come to his house and help him shovel the light flurries out of his driveway

I have registered on-line, but it's still so new to me that I haven't gotten used to what all the benefits are.  One problem is that I work for a library and I don't buy many books for myself.  I can check out all I want and quite often suggest titles that the library should purchase.

It is, allegedly, Fahrenheit 28 degrees here in Oakland "right now."

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I, of course, knew naught of this as I have a mattress warmer that allowed me toasty comfort all through the night.

I do have my thermostats set on 70...and the house feels much as it does on winter days when I have it set on 60.

I had -20 this morning.. Oakland was 48 degrees warmer than me..

Using a hair dryer on the pipes after they freeze can help speed the thawing process.  A portable heater also works.

You want to be careful with heaters...

Houses have started on fire here with people using heaters and blowtorches to thaw pipes.

It is interesting...

I have seen wildebeast, lions, giraffes, hyenas, and gazelles...

We watched "Ice Age II" last night.  How sad.  Such forced attempts to be funny. The only scenes that work are the "Scrat" ones where there is no dialogue.  Even "Madagasar" was saved by the penguins.

Horses for course but couldn't the people who should know - notice that the jokes did not work!

When will I learn to avoid "sequels".  I guess I am always hoping for another Toy Story 2.
