And of course there is that famous line we sang once in the chorus of a very boring production of OKLAHOMA!

They couldn't pick a better time to start in life.
It ain't too early, and it ain't too late.

TALKING ABOUT LAST NIGHT'S AMAZING RACE (MBarnum, not sure if you watched it yet).

I wish that there had been more going on.  There were only 2 small tasks (the goat/water on the head AND the moving the logs).  That was hardly enough time for errors (although a few teams managed).

Well then of course I got a solo line at the end and added my own couplet:

Plenty of room to swing a rope.
Plenty of sex and plenty of dope!

Jennifer I thought Lynn & Alex and Rob and Amber all did nice jobs last night.  If I had to choose a favorite team right now....and it's close....it might be Uchenna & Joyce.

DR JOSE - India-No-Place is about right where you are.  Too bad you aren't staying downtown - much more activity!  And DRJOEY is right, I forgot about the Monon Trail - it's a nice run/walk/bicycle trail alone the right of way where the old railroad used to run.

We were talking about the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES/ Vanity Fair fiasco yesterday.

Here is a summary:

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ap/20050405/111274620000.html

Anyhow, I did catch the Teri Hatcher interview last night. And this is what she said.

1. Yes there was an ABC rep there.

2. Teri said (regarding her choice in bathing suit) that she walked into the bathing suit room, asked the expert what she should wear, and then took the red suit she was given.  She also said that she knew nothing about her not being allowed to go choose first.

3. Teri also said that she did not run anywhere in tears. In fact she did not remember any tears at all.

3. And re: Marcia Cross being upset, Teri said that she can't speak for her. But that she tends not to believe that story.

One part that was unclear to me, was when they were discussing who would have given the ABC rep the list of demands.  Teri said something like, "well you think about it". And i wasn't sure what she was implying.

Remember when Lark Cigarettes and Jeno's Pizza Rolls were both using the William Tell Overture for the theme in their commericials.  There was a great ad for Jeno's Pizza Rolls (maybe a Stan Freberg ad) where a man taking a cigarette from a red pack (obviously supposed to be a Lark pack) stops the Jeno's person and says, "I've been meaning to talk to you about your theme."  Suddenly, a gloved hand clamps on the "Lark" guy's shoulder and an off-camera voice says, "I've been meaning to talk to you about the same thing."  The Lark guy turns around to see The Lone Ranger and Tonto behind him.

AMAZING RACE TALK:

I really cannot stand Lynn and Alex.  They are so catty and whine all the time. Really dislike them.  Of course Romber is my favorite team, they are just so good!  They work together.  They are supportive of each other.  And they are fast and good.  Somehow they always come out on top.  As for Uchenna and Joyce.  I do like them (they are my second favorite team). And they work together well and are very supportive of each other. HOWEVER, they always finish in the middle of the pack. To me, TAR is about being great. I want to see a team win that is clever/smart/great.  But besides Romber, there are no teams that are even close to being really good (although I suppose the army/beauty queen tream has done fairly well).

I remember very well the commercial Pogue is talking about.  That sort of cleverness has all but vanished, along with every other type of cleverness.

Jack Benny & Giselle McKenzie....we must have photos of said pieces!

LOL DR CP - I remember those commercials as well.  It must have been quite a shakeup at several agencies when Cigarette Ads were banned on television.  Winston, Salem, and Marlboro were regular sponsors of several popular programs.

I remember "Step Up to Kool" , Tareyton "I'd rather fight than switch" and of course Miss Frances Farmer's famous Kents "with the Micronite filter."

Well, I got me a nice present at lunch. I left home after eating half a spinach stromboli and half an apple (Anthony had the other half) and a glass of cinnamon apple iced tea and the devil called (in the form of Academy CDs). I answered that call and to my surprise and delight came away with a used copy of Night of the Hunter, produced in 1998 by our very own BK. I look forward to listening to it this afternoon.

Do all readers of a certain age know about this site?  You can buy CD's of many of the songs we listened to way back when.   8)

The Flintstones AND The Beverly Hillbillies as well, DR VIXMOM.  I remember Jed and Granny sitting in the kitchen puffing away on their Winstons and extolling its virtues.

I just discovered the song The Waters of March and I am quite addicted to it.

A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump,
It's a girl, it's a rhyme, it's a cold, it's the mumps

The plan of the house, the body in bed
And the car that got stuck,
it's the mud, it's the mud

A float, a drift, a flight, a wing
A hawk, a quail, the promise of spring

And the river bank talks of the waters of March
It's the promise of life,
it's the joy in your heart...

All I can say is, don't plan on living in any retirement homes in Portland.  For the third time in the past year, an activities director at a retirement home has screwed up a booking for me.  I've been booked for months at a place that I was supposed to play tonight.  Called this morning, lady says "Oh, I didn't understand your message and I couldn't find your number to call you back."  OK, first off, the message said "Yes, I can play April 6."  How hard is that to understand?  And the message included my phone number (which she had obviously called in the first place to leave the message to book me).  And third off I also bring a Senior Choir there regularly that's based at a big Senior Center so she could have left a message at the Senior Center.   Aaaarrrrgh.  The fact that two other retirement communities have pulled similar screw-ups has me in a fit of pique this morning.  Yes, an absolute fit of pique.

End of rant.

Waters of March

Ah, Joey, you have discovered one of the great gems of the latter part of Antonio Carlos Jobim's career.  I am the resident Brasil-freak here--I will gladly point you to other Brasilian artists you should listen to.  Here's a little trivia for you re:  Aguas de Marco (its original title):  the melody was a "dummy tune" Tom (as he was colloquially called) came up with to write the lyric to (and by the way, the original Portuguese is almost exactly like the English, which is unusual--Tom did his own translation).  However, when Tom started playing it for people, everyone loved it, so he never wrote another melody.  If you haven't heard it already, try to get the duet version with Tom himself singing with the legendary Brasilian chanteuse Elis Regina (it's on Elis' duet album with Tom).

Another funny story about the song:  Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77 were doing it (they were the first to record it in English, and Sergio actually recorded it twice in his career, something unusual for him) on the Tonight Show, and vocalist Bonnie Bowden went completely up on the lyric (which as you may imagine wouldn't be a hard thing to do).  She basically hummed the melody while Mrs. Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, kept listing things right and left to that exquisite Lydian chord.  :)
