I suppose Hugo was a shoo-in for those two categories, although I personally would have given the cinematography award to War Horse and art direction to The Artist - but Hugo is a show-off film and The Artist's art direction, while absolute perfection, was way too subtle to win.

How is that Sylvester Stallone presented Meryl Streep with one of her Oscars?  I thought the Best Actress Oscar is usually given by the previous year's Best Actor.
