Oscars:
I thought Crystal was a bit cheesy...or is moldy a better word. He's fun, true...but even in his last appearances, Bob Hope's corny jokes topped what Crystal dished out last night.
I liked some of the technical wizardry employed...loved the conductor's score graphic with the swirling notes, etc., during the music presentation.
I detested the necrology portion...especially the opening when we were supposed to be seeing a tribute to those who had passed, but instead, we were forced to wait while they established a live singer (whose identity is unknown to me) and a choir backup. What was THAT all about?
I think there was one suprise. I had expected to hear Viola Davis' name for best actress. Oddsmakers had assured everyone she would win. And Friday, I read a story online that had the headline "How Viola Davis stole Meryl Streep's Oscar"...accompanied by a lovely shot of Streep with Davis on a red carpet at some point this season. The story was totally not about a theft...but about Streep's glowing comments about Davis' performance that seemed to shift sentiments toward Davis. At any rate, I was delighted to see Streep take the stage. After an awkward attempt to stifle the standing "O", I thought her speech was moving and very gracious.
Happily, it was all over by 9 p.m. here on the Left Coast.
Oh, yes...silly me. I thought the necrology was to reflect on people who had made significant contributions to motion pictures. Yet, there was Whitney Houston. Do "The Preacher's Wife" and "The Bodyguard" count as significant contributions to motion pictures? I know. I'm chasing my [virtual] tail.
