Title: FOR ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE
Post by: bk on May 14, 2006, 12:14:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that today is a day for Mothers, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're celebrating Moother's Day.

Happy Mother's Day to those of you with the title!

When do you want Adam's number, MR BK?

An alien man singing to a curious alien woman.....with relish.  This is my KIND of musical already!

So....what a nice quote....almost hard to believe, but still interesting:

"Ever since I was a little girl in Florida, I have wanted to create a role on Broadway."  It's a great goal, but where did she get the idea?  And why did Disney do an extensive search for "Mary" wasting the time and raising the hopes of countless actresses, only to cast the woman who was playing Belle in their Broadway BEAUTY AND THE BEAST?

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, Tina, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

I do not like the word of the day.
I do not like it to do or say.
I will not comment in any way
Upon the chosen word of the day.

That doesn't stop us here at HHW!  ;D

Yesterday on the American Idol Message Boards there was an important topic discussed:

Kat Denies Being a Scientologist.

This was soon followed by a thread titled:

Kat Denies Being a Tupperware Lady.

Poor Elliot is taking a bashing for his choppers and his vibrato....which I think a LOT of people on that board think is a garment worn port de bras or something sold on the internet by Doc Johnson.

It took me a while to figure out why my gut was so sore yesterday when I was at work.  Was it a reaction to the German food der B and I had on Friday?

No, I decided it was from having been punched too often by a fifty-pound puppy named Angie, who decided to wrastle with Fletcher on my bed after we had returned home.  Did she care that she was repeatedly landing on myself, who was trying to lay down for a mo', with her full weight on a single paw?  Of course not.

This is a pup who needs an active boy or two.

I have THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE to finish this afternoon, but after that, I really don't know what I'll select to watch. And I'm not definite at this stage whether it will be something previously watched (MIGHTY APHRODITE sounds good) or something just received. Decisions, decisions.

Odd feelings about Mothers' Day this year - as you might guess. I think I'm going to put away the pictures. It's time.

What a gawjus day here! Feels almost Too Bad to have to leave for a matinee! Yes, The Actress is feeling a small conflict about going to the theatah! Well, i have the morning to feed the birds and walk around the garden, NOT weeding... that'll be hard!

Last night, I had just gotten into bed around ten or so - when I heard a small commotion on the deck... suddenly there is a little face at the window - a small bandit in a black mask peering in at me.

I got outa bed and turned on the deck floodlight, and a young raccoon just stared at me. I ran to the kitchen to get the bag o' cat food, and brought it into the bedroom, opened the door. He stepped back a few feet, but just kept staring at me as I filled his dish. I hadn't even straightened up when he came to the dish - so I just left the door open and sat in the doorway, not 18 inches away from this wondrous little guy! I did get up to get a robe once - he just kept eating. Then I lay on my stomach in the doorway, my face about a foot away from his, and watched him eat. At one point he started drinking the filthy water from my little fountain - so I took the other bowl to the bathroom to get fresh water - I put it down right next to his food dish - he was a little scared, but then dipped his paw in... Ah! water... then bent way down to drink. Back and forth between the food and the water, and all this face to face! I'm going to hate to leave here tomorrow afternoon, to do the show, stay in Seattle overnight, and head back to LA Tuesday morning. But I'll be back by a week from Thursday. Oh, it's just bliss here in the spring and summer, I tell ya!

Sunday morning greetings!  It's a drippy, dreary Mother's Day here in SW Ohio.  DS Rob and DH Richard gave me very mushy cards and a box of Russell Stover assorted dark chocolates.  Our official celebration was last Sunday with a lovely lunch with my mother, Richard's mother, and my aunt.  I might take my mom and aunt to Graeter's for ice cream later, if the weather clears up a little.

It is indeed a beautiful day in the Pacific Northwest.  It is supposed to be in the mid-seventies today and then take a giant leap to the mid-eighties tomorrow.  GOOD GRIEF!  Oh well, I guess it is fitting that it should be hot as Haydes on the day I go for my hospital pre-op appointment.  The other night I got a call from the hospital wanting to do my pre-registation prior to my pre-op.  I wonder if accident victims are required to pre-register if they think there is any chance that they might need ER care?

Today is May 14.

Today is Mother's Day, of course, but I think it is also the day that Publisher's Clearing House is supposed to come to my door and hand me a check for $1,000,000.00, or maybe it was $10,000,000.00.  Either way, I guess I should stay around the house and wait for them .  Now, let me see, there was some phrase they sent me a few weeks ago that I was supposed to say when they gave me the check; and, if I did, they would slip me an additional $5,000.00 cash.  Hmm, what did I do with that e-mail?[/size]

TCB - thanks for the vibes - it feels very uneventful, somehow... kind of - dare I say it? - anti-climactic after last night's raccoon partay... I'm about to go out on the deck with my bag o' peanuts for the blue jays... at some point, I'll get around to preparing my actual work for the actual job...

Is this what happens when you let your hair come in silver??? Life just seems so mellow here in the forest. No real inclination to interrupt the serenity with anything so drab as driving to Seattle to do a play...

Penny O, you are welcome to the whole family of raccoons that uses my apartment's parking lot as their dining room.  Coming home from rehearsal or performance, I often encounter the entire family on their way to the giant dumster.  Daddy is not exactly the most even-termpered fellow where his family's safety is concerned.

                         HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

I have my one glorious day off today. Going to the Farmers Market in a bit. Then walk around Studio City and check out some of the little shops. Then, if I feel like it, I might treat myself to a pedicure. Then home and maybe reading, a DVD...
Tonight I'm invited to a charity (for breast cancer) silent auction/party thingee which is just up the street -- don't even have to drive.
And I got a lovely e-card from DD in Budapest in which she said she loved me and I was her best friend. Can't beat that.

Nice pic, TCB!

With all this talk of Il Divo and Mario Frangoulis, I have discovered a new singer that some of you might enjoy...and he is a baritone, which makes me particularly happy!

Patrizio is a singer from Italy with his first CD out...I just happened upon it at Borders...quite a crooner!

His debut CD is available in English and in Italian...I haven't decided which I will get, yet.

Back from a nice walk (saw Ed Begley, who was selling his enviromentally-safe products at the Studio City Farmer's market, ran into dear reader Maria, who called out my name, and was eating a large phallic corn-on-the-cob with great elan, and then I came home and jogged - not only that, I went two blocks further than I normally do.

Had a great Mother's Day lunch with my family in Brooklyn at a place called 86 Noodles.  My brother kept calling it 86th Street Noodles, and didn't have the address.  Googling with the wrong name for the restaurant was no help, but somehow we all ended up in the same place at the same time.

The restaurant added an automatic 15% gratuity because we were a party of six; I think the waiters may sometimes end up losing money when they do that, because the service was quite excellent and I think many people would be inclined to tip more generously than 15%, but maybe they know their clientele.  We gave a little extra, but I would think others might not.

...A lovely Mother's Day so far (even though the person who made me a mother is far far away...) Indeed, as bk described, we met at the Market. He described my phallic corn-on-the-cob -- which was delish -- but neglected to mention the guilty pleasure purchase he showed me in his little brown bag: chocolate licorice!
And I made a purchase from Ed Begley (all the money goes to charity - "a Newman's Own kind of thing" as he described it) -- I bought a flashlight that never needs batteries. You shake it for 30 seconds and it's good to go. The funny thing is that after I left his stall, I took the flashlight out of its wrapping and couldn't make it work (or I couldn't see the light because it was so sunny). So I went back and asked him to test it for me. We finally wound up testing it in the back of his environmentally efficient car, which was parked behind his stall -- and which had a dark corner. It worked.   (Don't go there! Too easy.)

I finished up THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE earlier this afternoon. In years between visits to this film, I always forget specifically who lives and who dies. I think the writer made a brave choice in his last person to die, not whom the audience at the time would have expected to die at all.

Then, I put in the director's cut of DAREDEVIL which I bought on sale this week (along with THE DETECTIVE and THE INNOCENTS in a buy two get one free sale at DDDVD). I've always enjoyed the theatrical cut of the film while recognizing that it did seem incomplete and a bit rushed. The director's cut added 30 (to my mind) crucial minutes which fleshed out several characters, added an entire subplot, and made the film more appealing to me.

While still a comic book movie for sure, I still found it more appealing than, say, SPIDER-MAN which I still don't understand the wild appeal of.

Well, it grossed over $100 million at the box-office, so somebody else MUST have liked it, especially since if it hadn't been popular, Fox would NEVER have sprung for a SECOND (albeit very different ) DVD of it.

Now, I'm very undecided about what I want to watch when I go back to the TV. I may put in some CSI episodes from various seasons to lead me up to 9 p.m.

And, I haven't decided whether I'll watch DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES "live" and record the first of two L&O:CI episodes, or watch L&O and record HOUSEWIVES. Am definitely recording THE SOPRANOS.

I watched it off the Fox Movie Channel some months back, right when the DVD was first released, and I was stunned by its impact. I had only seen it on TV before in a dreadful pand & scan transfer, so the widescreen compositions and the gorgeous black and white photography floored me. FOund the whole thing haunting (no pun intended) and completely mesmerizing. I'm looking forward to enjoying the anamorphic transfer of the DVD soon.

I spent 2 and 1/2 hours sitting in non-moving traffic on I-5 yesterday while a tour bus full of high school musicians (no one was hurt) caught fire and burned to a twisted hulk of metal.

that is all.
Ahhh, but did any of the students "accidentally" leave their instruments behind?

Back from a nice walk (saw Ed Begley, who was selling his enviromentally-safe products at the Studio City Farmer's market, ran into dear reader Maria, who called out my name, and was eating a large phallic corn-on-the-cob with great elan, and then I came home and jogged - not only that, I went two blocks further than I normally do.
Wow!  I mean, Ed Begley has been dead since 1970!  That he's still this committed to the environment, thirty-six years after rejoining it, that's really something!

...Needless to say, I've been busy...  If I was able to have a computer keyboard in front of me while I work instead of a piano keyboard, well then...  And I've been working a lot both at The Palace and other locales.  Otherwise... Lestat is still running... We go into the studio next Monday to record the cast album...  :D  And I'm still having a wonderful time in general with the show and living in New York.  *And I finally got a New York cell phone number!!!!

That's all for now... I'm just taking a little post-show break at my friend's office, and then we're heading to dinner.  Things are supposed to be a little slower this week for me - two days of day-work instead of four or five - and I should be able to check in here on HHW in the mornings at least.

Hope everyone is doing well, and, trust me, I fully know that I fully deserve a big ole bitch-slapping for being so errant and truant over the past couple of weeks.  -Just when you think you've caught up on life...

I've seen Ashley Brown twice, in a performance of On the Record and at a benefit singing A Change in Me.  She's really great.  I wonder if they were worried that she might be too young and/or inexperienced so they did a casting search just to make sure that she was right.  We used to do that at Nick, have an actor/actress in mind, then audition 100 more just to prove to ourselves (and the producers) that our first choice was really the right choice.

Rodz and I had brunch with Ben and Ant this morning.  We walked into a restaurant in our neighborhood (one of about three) and realized, doh! it's mother's day, the whole world is out to brunch.  Luckily the had an opening and we were able to get a table.  At first they told us that they weren't accepting any more reservations, we would have to wait "a while", and that we had to wait inside the restaurant, we couldn't wander about.  After a look was exchanged with the hostess he said, oh or you can sit there, gesturing toward an empty table for four...

I always think of those Biblical epics as being big budget, high quality films, with the possible exception of John Wayne as the Centurian (was that THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD?).  But S AND S seemed to be an all-time low in quality.  I could swear that I saw Judith Anderson in the film, but she certainly isn't listed in the credits.

DR JRand55, thanks for the kind offer!  You might want to post the photo anyway, since I've driven so many other DRs mad with my BABESmania!  We have a copy in the office made directly from the original Byron photo in the NYPL Theatre Collection.  It's a famous photo, but it's fraudulent in that William Norris was not in the number with Miss Barrison, who was a rich young lady in 1903, thanks to her popular offstage activities with many of the stage door gentlemen.  She died in 1912 at the age of 31, from tuberculosis.

I assume you're looking at Ken Bloom's 101 MUSICALS?  I love Ken, but he got the plot for BABES totally wrong in his summary.

After we returned home we sat on the deck & had cheese, crackers & German beer & wine, the wine was for me, beer for Keith.  Bryan called while we were relaxing & we all had a nice chat.

For dinner we had big, beautiful, exceptionally delicious artichokes.

Hey, I will go to any lengths to keep BK's bitch-slapping machine in the closet garage.

I think we've just made the decision to change the title of the short story collection (which I'm starting to have to get serious about if I want it out in September) - I know several people here liked the title we're going to use -

How To Write A Dirty Book and Other Stories.

I like that title also...

TCB I suspect you can sing better than that.

Cute!  We had basmati with the artichoke.  Keith also had a veggie burger-I was too full after the cheese and crackers.

Aged rice?  I think that is what they threw at my bride.

Back after a nice afternoon with my DS - we went to a bookstore, took my mom and aunt for ice cream, then came home and watched the conclusion of West Wing.  I have just finished putting sets of kid bedding and towels and assorted fabrics in plastic bags to contribute to a garage sale - all labeled and, in the case of the fabrics, measured.

TCB - I love the new photo.

Bk - yup - like the new title. It'll make people pick up the book and look at the back, anyway. You can't get them to buy it if they won't pick it up to look at it...

All DR's - thanks for so much excellent vibe-age. The show went quite well - but there wer more of us on the stage than in the audience... it isn't exactly the type of play you take Grandma to see on Mother's Day... plus - such a gorgeous day OUTSIDE - who wanted to sit INSIDE to listen to a reading??? The Q and A and discussion after was quite lively and fun - I look forward to tomorrow night's reading - when I think we'll have a full house. Strange play, i warn ye...

I was at my sister's with the family:  the food and dessert had been consumed, the Mother's Day gifts given and much conversation was taking place when I got a call from the people whose house and cat I've been watching for the last three weeks.  Rita said that they're still in L.A. and are running late.  They won't be in until after 10:00 p.m., tonight.  TONIGHT????  I thought that they weren't coming in until tomorrow!  (I didn't let on that I was expecting another day to clean up. ::))

Anyway, I'm at their house now, and will gather all of my stuff, my dirty clothes, my DVD player, my VHS tape (the kind that Elmore is so fond of! ;) TMI...TMI!!) and leave in time to catch most of "Extreme Makeover:  Home Improvement."  The cat is inside, has been fed and everything looks okey-dokey.  It's been real, it's been fun, but it ain't been real fun...just kidding. ;D They pay, so I really don't mind. :) It'll be nice to sleep in my own bed again, though.

Watched two musicals tonight before settling in with network TV.

First up was SUMMER HOLIDAY which I returned to after watching it three or four weeks ago. I have been playing the soundtrack album a fair amount in the last few weeks and have those songs on the brain, so I watched it. The Technicolor looked very rich on the laserdisc.

Loving that rich Technicolor look, I picked the 1951 SHOW BOAT on DVD to watch next. The color is VERY deep in that bare bones DVD. I understand Warners is working on a new boxed set of SHOW BOATs for 2007 with all those versions and hopefully will do a restoration on the 1951 SHOW BOAT. Most of it looks just wonderful, but when that fog rolls in for "Old Man River," there's lots of problems with the transfer, and there are assorted speckles and some dirt and reel change markers throughout.

I squirmed and shifted uncomfortably in my chair throughout tonight's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. I can't remember an episode that made me feel so ill at ease before. The few lame moments of comedy just didn't work for me, and everyone seems to be in such a bad place at the moment. It was just a very unsatisfying downer of an episode.

There were two LAW & ORDER: CI episodes on tonight, and I watched the second one "live" (recorded the first one during DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES).

I had no idea Jamey Sheridan was leaving the show. That was the biggest surprise of the night. The case was an OK mystery.
